Marcella ‘Marcie’ Caroline Svoboda

PROTIVIN — Marcella “Marcie” Caroline Svoboda, 88, of Protivin, died Saturday (June 17, 2006) at the Bethesda Meadow Nursing Home in St. Louis, Mo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (June 22, 2006) at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin with the Rev. David Beckman celebrating the Mass. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Protivin, with grandsons Michael Johnsrud, Jason Johnsrud, Brian Svoboda, Bradley Svoboda, Eric Svoboda, Joel Svoboda and Ryan Svoboda as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are granddaughters Allison Svoboda, Kristin Wilson, Keri Johnsrud, Dana James and Sara Gay.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today (June 21) at Hugeback’s Protivin Funeral Home, where there will be a 4 p.m. Rosary, 6 p.m. Scripture service and a 6:30 p.m. video memorial tribute. Marcie was born July 12, 1917, on the Kalishek family farm located 2½ miles south of Protivin in rural Chickasaw County, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Kovarik) Kalishek. She received her elementary education in a rural country school and then at Holy Trinity Grade School. At the age of 14, the Kalishek family moved into Protivin, where she would help with her parents in their family meat market. Marcie joined the adult choir as a freshman and then became the church organist and later, music director. She was a 1935 graduate of Rudolphinium High School in Protivin.

On May 15, 1939, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, she married Edward John Svoboda. To this union four children were born. The couple made Protivin their home for the balance of their lives. In 1944, Edward “Swab” and Marcie purchased the local poultry business from Ed’s uncle. The business continued with Marcie and the children playing a larger role when Edward became ill in the early 1960s. Edward died on Aug. 25, 1977, and shortly thereafter, Marcie sold the business.

Marcie was always very musically active in her church and was helpful in the early days of the Protivin Czech Choir. She also spent time making cakes for weddings and other special events. In December of 2003, she became a resident at the Oneota Nursing Home in Decorah and in February of this year went to live in the Bethesda Nursing Home in St. Louis to be near family.

Survivors include three sons, Larry (Helen) Svoboda of Clear Lake, Edward “Bud” (Diane) Svoboda of St. Charles, Mo., and John (Nancy) Svoboda of Omaha, Neb.; one daughter, Margaret Johnsrud of Chicago; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and one niece, Grace McNeal of Protivin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother, Benjamin Kalishek.

Lois J. Klouse

MASON CITY — Lois J. Klouse, 77, of 1818 Cerro Gordo Way, died Sunday (June 18, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Jo Frahm Watkins and the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in St. Ansgar.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and will continue at the church one hour before the service.

Memorials may be given to the Lois J. Klouse Memorial Fund.

Lois was born June 17, 1929, in Gettysburg, S.D., the daughter of Fred and Wilhelmina (Kempf) Hanson. She graduated from Gettysburg High School and later attended college in Aberdeen, S.D.

Lois married James A. Jenson in 1950 and together they had three sons. Lois taught school for a short time, was a stay-at-home mother and would later work for Montgomery Wards in Sioux Falls, S.D. She married Ervin Klouse on Aug. 1, 1981, in Sioux Falls.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Lois is survived by her husband, Ervin, of Mason City; three sons, Randy (Cheri) Jensen, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Steven (Barb) Jensen, of Medford, N.J., and Mark (Beth) Jensen of Sioux Falls, S.D.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Rosse Hanson, of Gettysburg, S.D., and Myrtle (Eldon) Robbins of Longview, Wash.; one brother, Howard (Del) Hanson, of Oneida, S.D.; four step-sons, Curtis (Nan) Klouse, of Mason City, Craig (Janet) Klouse, of Mason City, Corey (Karen) Klouse, of Mason City, and Chad Klouse of Mason City; one step-daughter, Cheryl (Bob) Powell, of Mason City; 12 step-grandchildren; and two step-great grandchildren.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother, Maurice.

Dorothy F. Seely

HAMPTON — Dorothy F. Seely, 77, of Hampton, died Tuesday (June 20, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Faith Baptist Church in Hampton with Pastor David Koenigsberg officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery in Hampton.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be given in Dorothy’s name to Hospice of North Iowa.

Harvey Asmus

BLUE EARTH, Minn. —Harvey Asmus, 78, of Rake, passed away on Monday (June 19, 2006) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

The funeral ceremony will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rake with Pastor Larry Rehlander officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Winter Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Blue Earth, and will continue one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in East Cemetery in Rake.

Harvey Burton Asmus was born in rural Frost, Minn., on April 3, 1928, to Henry and Byrdie (Johnson) Asmus. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended Rake High School, graduating in 1945.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War from 1953-1955, when he was honorably discharged. Harvey then attended the University of Minnesota from 1955 to 1959, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business.

While attending the University of Minnesota, he met fellow student and soon to be wife, Carol Grossbach. They were married in Red Wing, Minn., on June 21, 1958. To this union, three children were born, Janice, Harlan and Ann Marie.

Harvey was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, serving for many years both on the Church Council and as an usher. Harvey was also a member of the Rake American Legion Post.

Harvey established Asmus Farm Supply in 1960 and was actively involved in its day-to-day operations. Harvey loved farming, being in the office with customers, going on annual big-game hunting trips, fishing with friends and traveling with his wife.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Carol, of Rake; his three children: Janice Vowels and her husband, Steven, of Sussex, Wis.; Harlan Asmus and his wife, Amy, of Rake; and Ann Marie Alfonso and her husband, Larry, of Fort Collins, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Erik and Sarah Vowels, Erin, Holden and Garrett Asmus, and Derek, Stephen and Luke Alfonso; and his mother-in-law, Mable Grossbach, of Red Wing.

He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Carl Grossbach.

CHARLES CITY — Darlene M. Brand, 57, of 910 13th St., Apt. 12, Charles City, died Monday at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, (June 23, 2006) at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, with Pastor Mike McAbee of the New Life Community Church in Charles City officiating.

Cremation has taken place with Cremation Services of North Iowa in Mason City.

Hazel Ellen Sanborn

MASON CITY — Hazel Ellen (Kimm) Sanborn, 85, formerly of 2060 S. Kentucky Ave., Mason City, died Monday (June 19, 2006) at Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 23, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Kathy Graves officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today, June 22, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, KCMR radio station or Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.

Hazel Ellen Kimm was born Aug. 11, 1920, at the farm home of her parents near Norway, Iowa. She was the daughter of Jacob and Pearl (Primrose) Kimm. In 1922, the family moved to a farm east of Northwood. They later moved into Northwood, where she attended school and graduated from Northwood High School in 1938. Hazel attended Hamilton College and graduated from executive secretarial and accounting in 1939.

Following graduation, Hazel was employed as a secretary at Hamilton Business College until she accepted a position as a secretary in a branch office of the War Department in 1940. She was later employed at Good Shepherd Health Facility as an executive assistant.

In 1941, she returned home to Northwood to be united in marriage to Keith P. Sanborn. They were married on Oct. 13 by Pastor Arthur J. Tolo at Northwood Lutheran Church. To this union four children were born.

Hazel was a Hospice volunteer for many years and also volunteered at KCMR radio station.

Hazel enjoyed antiquing, collecting angels and pink depression glass, baking cookies for her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Keith were avid campers and were members of the North Iowa Chapter WBCCI.

In their retirement years they enjoyed wintering in Harlingen, Texas. Hazel was also an active member of Lydia Circle and Trinity Lutheran Church Women.

Survivors include one sister, Betty Hanson, of Northwood; children, Sally M. Johnston of Mason City, Cynthia K. Mogk of Mason City, Kim P. Sanborn and wife, Linda, of Stacy, Minn., and Rosalie A. Erickson and husband, Jerry, of rural St. Ansgar; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Neal; twin sisters, Nadine and Maxine in infancy; three granddaughters, Katherine Erickson, Jennifer Mogk and Heather Sanborn; and husband, Keith P. Sanborn, in 2001.

Douglas K. Gruben

NORA SPRINGS — Douglas K. Gruben, 67, of Nora Springs, died Monday (June 19, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a lengthy illness.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 24, at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 101 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Dr. Jennifer E. Edinger officiating. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs, with military honors conducted by members of the American Legion H.D.S. Post No. 449.

Doug Gruben was born April 8, 1939, in rural Cerro Gordo County, to Henry Edward and Inez (Larson) Gruben. He attended Nora Springs area schools until his enlistment in the military in 1956 and he earned his high school diploma through the United States Army in Hamburg, Germany, in 1957. He married the former Nancy Wolske on June 24, 1959, in Rock Falls, and the couple moved to Nora Springs in September 1964. They were married until 1974.

Doug worked as a switchman and engineer for the C&NW Railroad and the Soo Line Railroad for many years and lived most of his life in the Nora Springs and Mason City area. Most recently, Doug was the owner/operator of Doug’s Place in downtown Nora Springs.

He enjoyed playing and watching golf, camping, hunting and fishing. Doug was a long-time member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Mason City Lodge, and both the Rockford Country Club and the West Hills Golf Club of Nora Springs.

Survivors include his mother, Inez Gruben, of Ashland, Mo.; sister, Norma Austin, of Ashland, Mo.; daughter, Lynn (Larry) Morse, of Oak Island, N.C.; son, Mark Gruben, of Freeborn, Minn.; son, Michael (Phyllis Neel) Gruben, of Kansas City, Mo.; granddaughter, Brooke Oehlert; and great-grandson, Trenton, of Asheville, N.C.; grandson, Grant Oehlert, of Oak Island, N.C.; nephews, Dana Austin of Hartsburg, Mo., Jon Austin of Phoenix, Ariz., and Dan Austin of Denver, Iowa; several aunts, uncles, cousins and many close friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Henry E. Gruben, in 1966; brother, Donald E. Gruben, in 1950; and nephews, David A. Austin and Jeffrey R. Austin.

Anthony ‘Tony’ Pals

MASON CITY — Anthony “Tony” Pals, 54, of 1594 N. Carolina Ave., died Tuesday (June 20, 2006) at home after a long illness, surrounded by family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kathy Graves officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Tony was born Sept. 26, 1951, in Belmond, Iowa, the son of Edward and Margaret (Dougherty) Pals. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1969.

Tony married Nadine Quitney June 24, 1972, in Mason City. Tony was a self-employed contractor and farmer for many years. Later he was a partner in Custom Concrete Contractor of Mason City. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Tony enjoyed snow skiing in Colorado, boating, muscle car and races, baking, especially chocolate chip cookies, and loved being with his family and friends. Tony was a devoted and proud family man, husband and father. His contagious laughter could fill any home. He made everyone welcome and his generosity was never ending.

Tony is survived by his wife, Nadine, of Mason City; two sons, Jarrod and Derek Pals, of Mason City; grandson, Ethan Pals; granddaughter, Zoe Pals; brother, Dennis Pals and wife, Joan, of Mason City; sister, Kathy Scherffius and husband, Frank, of Burlington, Kansas; father and mother-in-law, Richard and Connie Quitney, of Mason City; many sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Margaret Pals, nephew, “JJ” Pals and son Daniel in 2004.

MASON CITY — Melody Sutherland, 99, of Mason City, and formerly of Horicon, Wis., died on Friday (June 16, 2006) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at the Murray Funeral Home, 716 Clinton St., Horicon, Wis., with the Rev. Paul Hudson officiating. Burial was in the Burnett Central Cemetery.

ALGONA — Robert J. “Bob” Binzen, 90, of Algona, died Wednesday (June 21, 2006) at The Kossuth Regional Hospital in Algona.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 7 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona, with a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Rosary to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Linda Marie (Krull) Wrage

RUDD — A service celebrating the life of our loving wife, mother, daughter and friend, Linda Marie (Krull) Wrage, 56, of 409 Depot St., Rudd, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday (June 24, 2006) at the First United Methodist Church in Rockford with Pastor Jim Turner officiating. Following services her body will be cremated with inurnment at the Westside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Linda Marie Krull was born Nov. 16, 1949, in Charles City, Floyd County, a daughter of Lyle Henry and LaVonne Kathryn (Ackley) Krull, and was called home by her Heavenly Father, on Tuesday (June 20, 2006) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. Even after death, Linda’s life will continue through her donation of organs for transplant.

She received her education in the R.R.M.R. Consolidated Schools, graduating in 1968. On Aug. 2, 1996, she was united in marriage to Gerald “Butch” Wrage at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Linda had been previously employed by Menards in Mason City and the Coach House in Charles City. She was employed by Hobby Lobby in Mason City at the time of her death.

She had many interests which included sewing, quilting, cross-stitching, reading and gardening. Her home reflected her many interests including the Beatrice Potter items and collection of antiques she had acquired throughout her life.

She was a member of the Rudd Library Board, one of the organizers of REACH in Rockford, 4-H leader, U.M.W., Sunday School and United Methodist Youth Fellowship leader, and leader of Girl and Boy Scout troops. She designed a Klondike Derby Badge which was accepted by the B.S.A.

Linda will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Jerald “Butch” Wrage, of Rudd; her daughter, Trina (Timothy) VonHagen, of Rockford; son, Bradley (Tiffani) Primrose, of Clear Lake; four stepchildren, Mark (Christie) Wrage of Fargo, N.D., Brian (Lana) Wrage, of Waverly, Lisa DeWine, of Genoa, Neb., Scott Primrose, of Anamosa; 12 grandchildren, Orey VonHagen, Elijah VonHagen, Ashton VonHagen, Jordan Nelson, Kasey Primrose, Nickolas Sibert-Primrose, Andrew Primrose, Faith Primrose, Nathan Wrage, Emma Wrage, Avery Wrage and Abram Wrage; her father, Lyle Krull, of Rockford; her siblings, Dan (Shorty) Krull, of Rockford, Debra (Tom) Nelson and David (Mary Ann) Krull, of Marble Rock; and two nieces, Cassandra and Morgan Krull.

She was greated in Heaven by her mother, LaVonne, who died June 9, 2000; her brother, Dennis, in 1957; and her grandparents, Cecil and Pearl Ackley, George and Dora Ackley, Henry and Velma Krull, John and Kitty Barr.

Mary Jo Bublitz

MASON CITY — Mary Jo Bublitz, 71, of 34 Stony Way, died Thursday (June 22, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Danielle R. Johnson, 30, of Rochester, Minn., died on Wednesday (June 21, 2006) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Danielle Renee Sculley was born on Dec. 20, 1975, in Mankato to Thomas and Sue (Wright) Sculley. She graduated from Faribault High School in 1994 and from Winona State University in 2002.

She married Craig G. Johnson on May 18, 2002, in Rochester. Danielle was employed as a social worker at REM River Bluffs, Rochester, and was a member of Meadow Park Church of Christ, Rochester. Danielle especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Craig; two children at home, Donaven, age 3, and Liric, age 5 months; her father and stepmother, Tom and Terri Sculley, of Northwood; her mother and stepfather, Sue and Lee Tollefson, of Faribault, Minn.; six siblings, Brent (Jenna) Sculley, of Eagan, Minn.; Michael (Val) Thomas, of Northwood; Rhiannon (Jared) Combs, of Mason City; David (Trudy) Tollefson, of Coon Rapids, Minn.; Dan (Beth) Tollefson, of Farmington, Minn.; and Amy (Brian) Nielsen, of Hartland, Minn.; paternal grandmother, Georgene Sculley, of Austin, Minn.; aunt, LuAnne Sculley, Rochester, Minn.; mother-in-law, Barbara Johnson Vernio, of Miami, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Michael Vernio, of River Falls, Wis.; a close friend, John Davis, of Rochester, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

Beverly Sue Determann

FOREST CITY — Beverly Sue Determann, 44, of Forest City, passed away on Monday (June 5, 2006) at her home.

Beverly was born Nov. 25, 1961, in Manning, to Melvin and Darlene (Haack) Determann. She attended public schools and graduated from Sac City High School in 1980. She worked as a nurse’s aide at area nursing homes and also at North Central in Forest City. The light of her life was her son, Justin.

She enjoyed her nieces and nephews and they liked to go to Mason City shopping when Mom would come up to spend a few days. She was known and admired for her beautiful embroidery she did for family and friends. Many quilts were fashioned from those same embroidery blocks.

Survivors include her son, Justin Wolf, at home; mother, Darlene Garrels, of Wall Lake; two brothers, Mark Determann and wife, Joyce, and Kenneth Determann and wife, Sue, both of Wall Lake; her nieces and nephews; and extended family members.

Bev was preceded in death by her father, Melvin in 1967; and stepfather, Lennis Garrels in 2000.

Michael Max Hinich

CLEAR LAKE — Michael Max Hinich, 72, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (June 22, 2006) at his home after a long battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 26, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Jon M. Seda officiating. Interment will be held at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City. Military honors will be presented by Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with a Scripture wake service at 6:30 p.m. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

A memorial fund toward ALS research in memory of Michael has been established.

Mike was born Aug. 6, 1934, in Mason City, to Mike and Katherine (Hodak) Hinich. He graduated from Holy Family High School. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. Then he attended Forest College in Chicago receiving an electrical engineering degree. He worked for Kleinschmith of Northbrook, Ill., and Electric System Design until retiring. He then opened an Italian restaurant, La Nonna (AKA Blasi) in Naperville, retiring in 1996 to Mason City and then moved to Clear Lake.

Michael was known for his generosity, love of sport, especially golf, entertaining and showed tremendous courage battling ALS.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Tina M. Hinich, of Clear Lake; children, Michael D. Hinich and his wife, Andrea, and their children, Kaitlyn and Michelle, of Rosemont, Ill., and Kathy Hinich Norman and her husband, John, and their children, Sarah and Eric, of Sugar Grove, Ill., Patrick Hinich and his wife, Hilary, and their children, Brian and Jonathon, of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; and step-children, Susan Bertsch and her husband, Roger, and their children Lauren, Austin and Brian, of Allentown, Pa., Lisa Dzik and her husband, Darren, and their children, Brandon, Sean, Samantha, Michelle and Matthew, of Hanover Park, Ill., Janet Milazzo and her husband, Sal, and their children, Savannah and Brett, of Lakevilla, Ill., Sharon Rajewski and her husband, Kurt, and their children, William and Jenna, of Bartlett, Ill.; sister, Nancy Walter, of Mason City; brother-in-law, Harvey Schauf, of Mason City; first wife, Carol J. MASON CITY — Mary Jo Bublitz, 71, of 34 Stony Way, died Thursday (June 22, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Mary Jo was born on July 27, 1934, in Sheffield, the daughter of William and Beatrice (Storck) Olson. Mary Jo was baptized on Sept. 16, 1934, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and confirmed on March 21, 1948, at First Lutheran Church in Britt. When she was four years old, her parents operated a well-known grocery store in Hutchins. She picked up the trait of loving people from being around all the customers during this time; she carried out this love the rest of her life.

She enjoyed visiting relatives, neighbors, friends and calling people on the phone. When at Britt High School, she played saxophone and enjoyed music, choir and loved to sing. She and her mother took up the hobby of ceramics as she valued making things. After graduating in May 1951, she went to Hamilton Business College for two years.

She worked as a telephone operator at Garner, and a sondex machine operator at the Park Clinic. She also worked at Carleton Stewart Music Co. and Good Shepherd as a phone operator. Her parents had a business in Columbus Junction, Missouri Valley, and Worthington, Minn. She loved to help them in their business.

She took on the job of Cub Scout leader as well. She was active in church, sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and Bible school and was the Sunday school superintendent and was active in her circle. She loved the Lord.

She married Roger Bublitz on Sept. 9, 1962, at St. James Lutheran Church by Pastor Donald Loots. She was preceded in death by her parents, six aunts and five uncles.

She is survived by her husband, Roger; one son, Dan and wife, Angie, of Nora Springs; three grandsons, Cody, Carter and Spencer; one granddaughter, Taylor; and many cousins.

She will be sorely missed by her husband, family, relatives and friends.

NORTHWOOD — Orpha Viola Alertson, 81, of Northwood, died Thursday (June 22, 2006) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood

Orpha was born on Aug. 29, 1924, in rural Northwood, Iowa Deer Creek Township, the daughter of Osmon Tobias (Toby) and Lillie (Christianson) Alertson. She was baptized and confirmed at Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church. She attended No. 4 Worth County country school. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Northwood.

Orpha cleaned at Interstate Power for more than 30 years and many other businesses and family residents in Northwood.

She enjoyed quilting, gardening, crafting and putting puzzles together.

Robert Francis Tenney

HAM LAKE, Minn. — Robert Francis Tenney, 18, of Ham Lake, wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend, entered into paradise on June 20, 2006, after a brief and unexpected illness.

Robert was a recent graduate of Forest Lake High School. Gentle, mild-mannered and kind, he was a friend to many. Robert especially enjoyed athletic events and his time as a cast member of the Passion Play at his church. Above all, he loved his family and his many pets.

A celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the North Heights Lutheran Church, Hwy 96 at Hwy 10, Arden Hills (enter Door A), Shoreview, Minn., with visitation beginning at 5 p.m. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Roseville, Minn.

HAMPTON — Francis D. “Fritz” Wullbrandt, 88, of Hampton, passed away Thursday (June 22, 2006) at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, at the United Methodist Church in Hampton with the Rev. Jerry Miller officiating. Burial of the cremains will be at the Hampton Cemetery immediately following the service.

Fritz was born May 31, 1918, in Exeter, Neb., the son of Henry T. and Harriet Meyers Wullbrandt. He attended county school and graduated from Exeter High School. From 1942 to 1946, he served in the Pacific Theater of Operations, fighting in the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. He married Frances E. Mallory of Hampton on Sept. 12, 1948.

In 1946, he and his childhood friend, Ray Barkmeier, established the first B & W Food Store in Hampton, later adding stores in six surrounding communities. Fritz was a leader in his community throughout his life. He served as president of the Hampton School Board, Hampton Country Club, Hampton Kiwanis Club, Hampton Chamber of Commerce and numerous boards. He was also a 50-year member of the Anchor Masonic Lodge No. 191 in Hampton.

Fritz is survived by his wife, Fran; and four children, Wendy Wullbrandt of Staten Island N.Y., Paul and wife, Judy, of Hampton, Jane Wullbrandt of Atlanta, Ga., and Beth Vogts and husband, Steve, of West Bend, Wis.; two grandchildren, Lia Wullbrandt and husband, Andrew Numelin, of Merriam, Kan., and Alex Wullbrandt of Hampton.

NORA SPRINGS — Winifred Shanks, 91, of Nora Springs, passed away on Thursday (June 22, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Winifred was born to Winfield and Ethel (Ayers) Hart on Aug. 22, 1914, at their farm near Nora Springs. She was the seventh child of seven children. She attended Nora Springs Public School and Hamilton Business College, Mason City. In her youth, she was active in scouting and became an Eagle Scout.

On Dec. 5, 1936, Winifred was united in marriage to Russell F. Shanks. They farmed in the area until their retirement in 1983, upon which they moved to Nora Springs to a home overlooking the Shell Rock River. She enjoyed watching the bald eagles and various birds from her home. Winifred’s hobbies also included gardening and planting flowers. She was a ceramics teacher for many years. Winifred was a long time member of the North Iowa Rock and Mineral Club and went on many camping trips in the West.

She was an active lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church and held many offices in the United Methodist Women’s organizations. She often decorated the church for holidays and special events.

Winifred will be greatly missed by her two sons, Howard (Laura) Shanks, Ames, and Michael (Colleen) Shanks, Nora Springs; six grandchildren, Kevin (Rita) Shanks, Franktown, Colo., Brent (Jackie) Shanks, Ames, Kimberly (Shawn) Majors, Ankeny, Lisa (Chris) Smith, Clear Lake, Julie (Brad) Nelson, Nora Springs, and Brad (Jeannie) Shanks, Nora Springs; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell; six siblings; and her parents.
