MASON CITY - June M. Dorsey, 75, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave., died Thursday (June 15, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday (June 19, 2006) at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Jon M. Seda officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a 5 p.m. Scripture wake service followed by a rosary.

Rosemarie Meacham

MASON CITY - Rosemarie Meacham, 73, of 24672 Spruce Ave., Mason City, died early Wednesday morning (June 14, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Saturday (June 17, 2006) at Bethel United Methodist Church, 503 E. South St. in Manly, with the Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, and again one hour prior to services at the church.

Rosemarie was born one of four children to Harry and Louise (Harms) Freeseman on May 2, 1933, in Britt. She completed her high school education there and then attended Mason City Junior College for two years. She was employed as a teacher in Rock Falls for one year and then with Nora Springs for two years.

She met her future husband, Kenneth Meacham, at the Surf Ballroom and they were later united in marriage on Aug. 1, 1953, at the Lutheran Church in Britt. To this union was born four children. After raising her children and working alongside her husband for years on the farm, Winnebago Industries employed her for three years.

She was a wonderful cook, but in her later years she liked to go out often to eat with her husband. They went everywhere together and especially enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas several times a year. She loved to play the slots with her friend, Nuffy, when Kenny wasn't available and enjoyed Marquette and the new Northwood casino. When she wasn't playing her chances, she enjoyed singing karaoke at local establishments, telling jokes and being with her family and friends.

Those thankful in sharing Rosemarie's life include her husband, Kenny, of 52 years; her three daughters, Kristie and her husband, David Pope, of Mason City, and their two children, Heather and Ryan; Donna Meacham and her special friend, Bret Swanson, of Rock Falls, and her daughter, Jackie Horsfall; and Lori and her husband, Tom Ginapp, of Mason City and three children, Joshua, Elizabeth and Katie; her one son, Jay and his wife, Debbi Meacham, of Plymouth, and their children, Michael Meacham, Mike and Dan Berding, and Angie Stark; two great-grandchildren, Chase and Charlie Berding, and her special friend, Joette Gerdes.

Preceding her in death were her parents, two sisters Elizabeth Ricketts and Gretchen Bickford; and one brother, Herman Freeseman.

Frank Meyer

FORT ATKINSON - Frank Meyer, 89, of Fort Atkinson, died Wednesday (June 14, 2006) at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah following a short illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (June 17, 2006) at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson with the Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today and until 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel, in Fort Atkinson. There will be a Forester Rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scripture service at 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Frank Henry Meyer was born on Jan. 27, 1917, the son of Henry and Rose (Meyer) Meyer, on the family farm near St. Lucas. Frank attended rural parochial school and helped on the family farm.

He married Viola Kuboushek on Oct. 14, 1941, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa. Together they farmed near Fort Atkinson, retiring and moving to Fort Atkinson in 1990. Frank enjoyed watching baseball, especially the Chicago Cubs.

Frank was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Order of the Catholic Foresters in Fort Atkinson, where he was a member for 56 years.

Frank's survivors include his daughter: Joan (John) Swestka, of Cresco; two sons: Vern (Pam) Meyer, of Osage, and Gerald "Jerry" (Marcia) Meyer, of Fort Atkinson; nine grandchildren: Jessie (Jeff) Havel, Jadie Meyer, Brenda Suckow, Wendy Suckow, Jennifer (fiancé, Jeremy Johnson) Suckow, Katie Suckow, Brian Swestka, Terri Swestka and Tim Swestka; three great-grandchildren: Chloe Suckow, Braylon and Blayze Havel; two brothers-in-law, Ted Schmitt, of Decorah, and Rudy Gerleman, of Calmar; five sisters-in-law, Christine (Herb) Rausch, of Fort Atkinson; Dolores Kuboushek, of Decorah, Laura Kuboushek, of Calmar, Agnes Meyer, of Decorah, and Leosa Meyer, of West Union.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Viola, in 1996; three brothers, Arnold (Katie) Meyer, Ted Meyer and Leo Meyer; four sisters-in-law, Wilma Gerleman, Marcella Schmitt, Mildred (Ed) Silhacek and Christina Kuboushek; and two brothers-in-law, Robert and Raymond Kuboushek.

Mathilda Riepm

SHELDON - Memorial services for Mathilda Riepma, 85, will be held at 11 a.m. today at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon with a family prayer at 10:45 a.m. The Rev. Greg Timmer will be officiating. Interment will be at 10 a.m. in East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.

Mathilda Riepma was born on March 12, 1921, in Lebanon, Iowa. She was the daughter of Jacob and Jennie (Bonnema) Harmsen. She lived her youth in rural Hawarden, Iowa, where she attended school.

She was united in marriage to Wilson Riepma of Larchwood, Iowa, on Dec. 4, 1941, in Artesia, Calif. They moved to the Ireton, Iowa, area, where they farmed. They later moved to Artesia, Calif. In 1958, they moved back to Iowa, where they farmed. They retired and moved to Sheldon, Iowa, in 1973. During their retirement, they enjoyed RVing in southern Texas during the winter months.

They also enjoyed playing pinochle with friends, fishing, going to auctions and gardening. Mathilda also enjoyed her family and grandchildren very much. Wilson passed away on Nov. 11, 2004.

Mathilda passed away on Tuesday (June 13, 2006) at the Northwest Iowa Health Center Senior Care in Sheldon.

Those left to cherish her memories are three sons and daughters-in-law: Dennis B. and Ellen Riepma, of Spencer, and their daughters: Katie and Megan; Robert A. and Janice Riepma, of Clear Lake, and their children, Amy Riepma, Eric (Janelle) Riepma and their child, Olivia; Theodore R. and Peggy Riepma, of Sheldon, and their daughters, Rachel (Daniel) Hoeck and Kimberly Riepma; three sisters: Alice Douma, of California, Cynthia Van Dyke, of Idaho, and Geneva Andriese, of California.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson; her parents; and four brothers, Ben Harmsen, John Harmsen, Jacob Harmsen and Richard Harmsen.

Ellis J. Wick

CLEAR LAKE - Ellis J. Wick, 89, 400 Highway 18 West, Clear Lake, died Monday (June 12, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (June 16, 2006) at the United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Keith Scott and Chaplain Ray Holder officiating. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 West, Mason City. Military honors will by the Iowa National Guard.

Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Ellis was born Jan. 10, 1917, at Canova, S.D., the son of Oscar A. and Pearl (Gagner) Wick. He was educated in the Canova Public School and studied electrical engineering at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Ellis married Marguerite Johnson May 25, 1940, in Yankton, S.D. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 3, 1942, had basic training in the Army medical field, completed the Army echnology course, then taught X-ray in Texas for Army field hospital units (MASH).

In August 1942, he was called to the Army Engineer School at Ft. Belvoir, Va., and graduated with the rank of second lieutentant. He was assigned to the 361st Engineer Special Service Regiment which was activated by the Army Chief of Engineers, serving in both the ETO and Asiatic theaters. After discharge in April 1946, he was employed at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in X-ray and taught X-ray technology.

As a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, he was called to active duty in October 1950. He served with the 36th Engineer Combat Battalion in Korea and was discharged in November 1952. He returned to X-ray at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for five years.

Then Ellis owned and operated a grocery and meat store on Main Avenue in Clear Lake. Then he owned and operated Wick's Cottages on City Beach for 17 years. While doing this he also was administrator for the Army Reserve Center in Mason City for nine years.

Ellis retired after selling the cottages in 1980. He completed six years active duty and 22 years Army reserve duty and retired as a major in 1977. He received nine Campaign Ribbons with a Bronze Star, the French 1946 Liberty Award, the Normandy Liberty Medal on June 6, 1997, and the 50-year anniversary, Korean War Pin from Sen. Grassley.

Ellis was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake and Clear Lake Noon Lions Club since 1962. He was awarded the Warren Coleman Honorary Award, the highest honor conferred by the Iowa Lions Club, the American Legion 1947 ? Commander 1960, and Adjutant for 27 years where he helped put more than 40 boys through Boys State. He was also a lifetime member of American Legion, V.F.W. 40ET 8, Disabled American (DAV) life member, member of the Reserve Officer Association (ROA) and past vice president of the North Iowa Reserve Association.

He was a charter member of the Clear Lake Fishing Club and member of the Clear Lake Senior Citizens. He was also a Scout leader in Mason City for nine years.

Ellis was an avid gardener, enjoyed growing unusual vegetables, fishing and loved wood carving. He traveled the U.S. and world with his wife, Marguerite.

Ellis is survived by three children, David Wick and his wife, Mary, of Virginia Beach, Va., Annette Dawson, of Mason City, and Thomas Wick and his special friend, Leigh Brouwer, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Sarah Wick, Matthew Dawson and Andrew Wick; and several nieces and nephews.

Ellis was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marguerite, on Aug. 18, 2000; his grandson, Noel Wick; and three brothers, Norman, Lawrence and Roger Wick.

June M. Johnson was born on June 23, 1930, in Gilmore City, the daughter of Herman and Agnes (Mosbach) Johnson.

June graduated from Swaledale High School. She was a homemaker raising three children. June went to work for Northwestern States Portland Cement Co. and worked there for 25 years until her retirement.

June loved dancing, traveling, redecorating, entertaining and cooking for family and friends; her greatest love was spending time with family and friends. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

June is survived by her husband, John Dorsey, Mason City; children, Pamela (Gerald) Lind, Phoenix, Ariz., John (Terri) Carney, Memphis, Tenn., and Gary Carney, Iowa City; grandchildren, Matthew Johnson, Phoenix, Ariz., Daniel and Joshua Carney, Memphis, Tenn.; brother, Arthur (Colleen) Johnson, Mason City; and sister, Annabel Patterson, Mason City; along with many nieces and nephews.

June is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Agnes Johnson; and brothers, Harland and Richard Johnson.

Sister Mary Basil Taylor

DUBUQUE — Sister Mary Basil Taylor, PBVM, 89, died on Friday (June 16, 2006) at Mount Loretto Motherhouse in Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Mount Loretto with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. on Monday with a wake service at 7 p.m.

Sister Basil was born in Lawler, Iowa, on Sept. 18, 1916, daughter of Oliver and Rose (Rink) Taylor. She entered the Sisters of the Presentation in September 1934 and professed her perpetual vows on July 31, 1940.

She received her BA degree from Loras College for elementary education and took art classes at Alverno College, Milwaukee, Viterbo College, LaCrosse, and Loras College, Dubuque. Her teaching career, spanning 47 years, took her to Danbury, Clare, Mason City, Charles City and St. Columbkille’s in Dubuque. She was an art instructor at the Charles City High School, Newman High in Mason City and Wahlert High School in Dubuque.

Sister Basil especially loved teaching kindergarten and edited “Little Mine” and “National Kindergarten Review” magazines for several years. She retired to Mount Loretto in 1984 and put her artistic skills to use by designing greeting cards, painting Christmas ornaments, Easter eggs and ceramics to be sold in the Mount Loretto Gift Shop. She enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and nature on her daily walks.

Surviving are nieces, nephews, and the Sisters of the Presentation with whom she shared her life for 71 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Helen; and her brothers, Arthur, Basil, George and Oliver.

Lavina Askeland

BUFFALO CENTER — Lavina Askeland, age 94, of Buffalo Center, died on Friday (June 16, 2006) at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa, with Pastor Mark Decker officiating. Interment will be at Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Her visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center.

Lavina Josephine Askeland was born at home near Hardy, Iowa, on April 12, 1912, to Osmund and Bessie (Olson) Torkelson. Lavina was baptized in the Lutheran faith and was confirmed in the Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa. She was a member of the Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake and was always ready to help in all ways.

After an eighth-grade education, she worked as a hired girl and later as a cook in the Dolmage Hospital in Buffalo Center.

Lavina was married to Ingvald Askeland on April 11, 1936, and has lived near Buffalo Center all her married life. She entered the Timely Mission Nursing Home in April 1993.

She was always ready to give a helping hand to others but also found some time for her hobbies including knitting, crocheting, writing poems, rosemaling, her flower and vegetable garden, and baking. Many remember her for her strawberry patch and the great fresh doughnuts and coffee provided to all who picked. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was loved by many.

She is survived by her five children, Lila Rauk of Leland, Iowa, Koreen and his wife, Karen, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, Orvin and his wife, Pam, of Eden Prairie, Minn., Carolyn Skogen and her husband, Don, of Rake, Iowa, and Diane Christianson and her husband, Steve, of Fergus Falls, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; her sister, Thema Sunde, of Forest City, Iowa; her sister, Louise Jermeland, of Forest City, Iowa; her brother, Orrin Torkelson, and wife, Marian, of Forest City, Iowa; her sister, Julaine Albertson, and her husband, Charles, of Lake Mills, Iowa; and her sister, Darlene Hanna, and her husband, Marvin, of Forest City, Iowa; sister-in-law, Bonnie Torkelson, of Forest City, Iowa; sister-in-law, Linda Kessler, of Scarville, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ingvald; her grandson, David Egesdal; her parents; her sisters, Othelia Torkelson and Myrtle Olson; her brothers, Joseph, Clifford, infant John, Arthur and John; and her sons-in-law, Carlin Egesdal and Arlyn Rauk.

Susan Elizabeth Leinbach

BELMOND — Susan Elizabeth Leinbach, 39, an attorney and editor, died on Thursday (June 15, 2006) at Montgomery Hospice Casey House in Rockville, Md., after a two-year battle with colon cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20. She was baptized in the Belmond United Methodist Church in Belmond, where the funeral will take place, with the Rev. Michael Druhl officiating. She will be buried next to her fraternal grandparents, Dr. Samuel P. Leinbach Sr. and Mildred Leinbach, in the family plot at the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.

Susan Leinbach was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on Nov. 28, 1966. She was the daughter of Samuel Packard Leinbach Jr. of Winchester, Va., and Julia Anne “Nancy” Chambers, formerly of Winchester, currently of Port Angeles, Wash.

Ms. Leinbach received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Virginia where she was an Echols Scholar. She received the degree of juris doctor from the Columbus School of Law, Catholic University, Washington, D.C. She received recognition from Catholic University Law Review for literary achievements and distinguished service while she was an editorial assistant. When she graduated from Columbus School of Law, she received the Law School Alumni Society Award for academic excellence, participation in extra-curricular activities, and dedication to the law school and community.

She resided in Bethesda, Md., and was employed as a legal editor for LexisNexis Academic & Library Solutions. She was a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and she was accredited to the Supreme Court of the State of Maryland.

In her spare time, she was an artist, with a particular talent for faces, and a writer with a deft sense of humor. She often encouraged others into trying to write and was always pleased to help them improve their work.

Along with her parents, she is survived by her beloved friend, Douglas Ian Spencer, of Berkshire, England; step-parents, Dr. Patricia Leinbach and Dr. B. N. Chambers; brother, Samuel Leinbach III, and wife, Sara Leinbach; step-sister, Myra Chambers; and step-brother, William Chambers.

FOREST CITY — Patricia R. Eastvold, age 59, of Forest City, died Friday (June 16, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 20, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Patricia Ruth Eastvold was born in Rake, Iowa, on Feb. 8, 1947, the daughter of Oscar and Lillian (Thompson) Russ. Her father died when she was young and her mother married Odin Johnson. The family made their home in Rake where Pat grew up and attended school. She graduated as class salutatorian of the Rake High School class of 1965.

Pat married Allen Eastvold at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake on June 4, 1966. The couple recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Allen was a pilot for Eastern Airlines, so the family lived in many different communities over the years. In 1977, Pat and Allen made their home in Forest City while Allen continued working for Eastern.

Pat was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. She was an avid reader and liked doing cross-stitch and crossword puzzles. She enjoyed family trips to the sprint car races in Knoxville.

Pat enjoyed gardening and loved music, at one time playing the French horn, organ, and piano. She liked keeping up with friends and family via e-mail and treasured time spent with her grandchildren.

Pat is survived by her husband of 40 years, Allen Eastvold, of Forest City; and her three children, Tim and Melissa Eastvold of Forest City and their children, Julia and Michael; Darla and Brad Evenson of Lake Mills and their children, Scott, Drake, Amelia and Hannah; and Matt Eastvold of Lake Mills. Also surviving is a sister, Lou Ann Van Gerpen, and husband, Pete, of Rake; a sister-in-law, Irene Russ, of Minneapolis, Minn.; three brothers-in-law and their families, Jim of Des Moines, Iowa, Paul of Springfield, Ill., and Darrell of Mankato, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Odin Johnson; and a brother, Ron Russ.

June M. Johnson was born on June 23, 1930, in Gilmore City, the daughter of Herman and Agnes (Mosbach) Johnson.

June graduated from Swaledale High School. She was a homemaker raising three children. June went to work for Northwestern States Portland Cement Co. and worked there for 25 years until her retirement.

June loved dancing, traveling, redecorating, entertaining and cooking for family and friends; her greatest love was spending time with family and friends. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

June is survived by her husband, John Dorsey, Mason City; children, Pamela (Gerald) Lind, Phoenix, Ariz., John (Terri) Carney, Memphis, Tenn., and Gary Carney, Iowa City; grandchildren, Matthew Johnson, Phoenix, Ariz., Daniel and Joshua Carney, Memphis, Tenn.; brother, Arthur (Colleen) Johnson, Mason City; and sister, Annabel Patterson, Mason City; along with many nieces and nephews.

June is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Agnes Johnson; and brothers, Harland and Richard Johnson.

Mona ‘Lynne’ Andrews

MASON CITY — Mona “Lynne” Andrews, 59, of Des Moines, formerly of Mason City, passed away Sunday (June 11, 2006) at the Cavanaugh Hospice House, Des Moines.

According to her wishes, her body was cremated. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Mona “Lynne” Andrews was born on Feb. 4, 1947, in Berkeley, Calif., to Guy M. and Pat Bemiss. Guy died when Mona was young and her mother later married Karl Boyden, Mona’s adoptive father.

While she lived in Mason City, Mona worked at the Iowa Co. Later, Mona moved to Des Moines and worked for Iowa Beverage in the financial department.

She is survived by her mother, Pat Boyden, Mason City; a son, Richard Andrews, Sacramento, Calif.; three brothers, Jon Boyden, Los Angeles, Calif., Glenn Boyden, Mason City, and Chris Boyden, Northwood; two nieces, Amber Boyden, Mason City, and Chelsea Boyden, Northwood; and one nephew, Chase Boyden, Northwood.

She was preceded in death by her father, Guy Bemiss; and her adoptive father, Karl Boyden.

Walter C. ‘Cooney’ Balduf

MASON CITY — Walter C. “Cooney” Balduf, 81, formerly of Mason City, died Thursday (June 15, 2006) at Bethany Manor Nursing Home in Story City, Iowa.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at the First Christian Church in Mason City.

The Rev. Charles Aurand will officiate. Internment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be begin at 9:30 a.m., one hour prior to the service, on Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be directed to First Christian Church.

Cooney was born on March 22, 1925, in Mason City, the son of Conrad Balduf and Evelyn (Buehler) Balduf. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1943. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy from June 1943 to February 1946.

He married Ardeen Kephart on June 20,1948, in Mason City. Cooney was employed in Mason City at Amour and Company and retired from Crescent Electric Supply in 1990.

His passion in life was service to his community and he greatly enjoyed the sport of golf. He volunteered at the Community Kitchen and Meals on Wheels. He was an active member in the First Christian Church. He was a life-long member of the VFW. Cooney was well known for his positive attitude on life and a keen sense of humor.

Cooney is survived by three sons: Blane Balduf of Colleyville, Texas, Barry Balduf of Mason City, and Brent Balduf of Nevada; nine grandchildren: Jenny, Elena, Sam, John, Bryan, Brittney, Alecia, Aimee and Emily; and four great-grandchildren.

Walter was preceded in death by his father, Conrad; mother, Evelyn; and sister, Mary Lou.
