Following graduation from Northwood High School, she entered the University of Wisconsin at Madison and graduated in 1939 with a degree in related art, the focus on interior design. In her freshman year French class, she met her future husband. In 1940, Kelly married Dr. Jerome (Jerry) F. Paulson, the love of her life. After Jerry’s service in World War II and his subsequent orthopedic training, the Paulson family moved to Mason City in 1951. Jerry practiced orthopedic surgery with Surgical Associates at Mercy Hospital until his death in 1973. After Jerry’s death, Kelly worked at Kellum Interiors, then, Professional Design L.C. as an interior designer for more than 20 years.

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Kelly was a gifted woman of boundless energy, creative spirit and intellect and passion for living. She remained vital and engaged with her family, friends and community until the day she died. Kelly contributed to Mason City civic life in a wide range of pursuits and served as a dedicated board member of the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum, the Frank Lloyd Wright Stockman House, the Mason City Planning and Zoning Commission, the YWCA, Girl Scouts and other organizations. For 15 years, she served on the architectural review committee of Asbury Farm.

Loving all things beautiful, Kelly was particularly dedicated in later life to the MacNider Art Museum which she helped found. She served for 20 years as an active board member and also served as the docent for the Stockman House where she created and maintained the cutting gardens and bouquets, and procured the home’s furnishings. For her work at the Stockman House, Kelly was awarded the Friend of Preservation Award in 1999 by the River City Society of Historic Preservation. She was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church and committed to Hospice of North Iowa.

At home, Kelly loved her gardens, dogs, music, books, parties and art of all kinds. She remained interested in and informed about finance, farming, trees and other matters of local and national interest. Always eager to learn and experience things firsthand, the all-Norwegian Kelly traveled to Italy, Mexico, Greece and Scotland in her ninth decade.

Generous in spirit and young in heart, she strove for excellence in herself, her family, those around her and in all that she did. His favorite animal of all to raise were his sheep. In addition to farming, Donal, his wife, and family owned and operated a Gulf Service Station in Chariton for a number of years. Donal was a feed salesman in the town of Lucas at Kent Feed Store for a period of time and had sold Purina feed for the Chariton Farmer’s Co-op. Many people will also remember Donal’s years of employment at the Johnson’s Sale Barn in Humeston, Iowa, where he had also done auctioneering duties on many occasions.

Donal and Donna were very much devoted to providing for the needs of their family and instilling in them the values of hard work and respect for others. A favorite saying that Donal’s family will remember him well always stating, “Keep your mouth shut and keep your hands in your pockets.”

His grandchildren will cherish the many years they were able to share with Donna and Donal on the farm and precious summers spent with one another. His family will remember fondly his special hugs, kisses, his friendly wave hello and goodbye, his special teasing personality and him always saying “I Love You!” as they parted company.

Those who knew Donal will always remember being able to count on him when they needed an extra hand to do something. He and Donna were always interested in the well-being of others.

Donal was a member of the Belmond Congregational United Church of Christ where he was baptized, and a member of Chariton Legion Post No. 0102 for 28 years.

He had been a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center since August 2004. He was preceded in death by his wife in February of 2006.

Mary Morse

CHICAGO, Ill. — Mary Morse, a former resident of Osage, Iowa, crossed to the other side on Friday (May 19, 2006) at her home in Chicago. Her mother, Frances Morse; her brother, Charles Morse; her life partner, Joanne Bristol; her minister and close friends were with her.

A memorial service was held in Chicago at Grace United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 27.

There will be a celebration of Mary’s life at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5, at the Osage United Methodist Church.

Mary grew up on a dairy farm near Osage and graduated from Osage Community High School in 1966. While she was a student at OCHS, Mary was busy after school with work on the family dairy farm. She took time for one club, GRA (Girl’s Recreation Association), and she was elected president of that club her senior year. Her classmates recognized her quiet leadership abilities, her modesty and her unfailing sense of humor.

As a student in medical technology at the University of Iowa, Mary made new friends but remained close to her family and hometown friends. Her first job after becoming a medical technologist was in Great Falls, Mont., where she developed a love of the mountains and the west. Even her trip moving to Montana was an adventure when the gas pedal broke on her 1964 Valiant and she had to lie on the floor and push the gas pedal while her mother drove.

She returned to Iowa City to work at the VA hospital, quit to go to graduate school, but changed plans and decided to travel around the United States with a friend. This was the first of many long trips Mary was to take.

Looking for more meaningful employment after this trip, Mary next found a job at a government hospital in Fort Defiance, Ariz., working with the Navajo Nation. She had a great deal of respect for her Navajo co-workers, but eventually the workload (90 minutes of work every hour by U.S. government standards), the isolation, and an opportunity to travel to China in 1974 led her to leave the reservation and move to Iowa City, Iowa. Mary traveled to China right after President Nixon’s visit opened China to the West, and there she took more than 800 slides, documenting a pre-westernized China that no longer exists.

In 1975, Mary settled in Chicago and worked for more than 20 years as a medical technologist at several hospitals, including Cook County Hospital, Northwestern Hospital and Masonic Hospital. She was active in her field, attending national conferences and even organizing a union for medical technologists at Cook County Hospital. Between her various jobs at hospitals, Mary was a co-owner and founder of a women’s gym, traveled all over the USA, and visited Nicaragua and Costa Rica. In her life, she was a political activist, a beekeeper, a bicyclist, a country dancer, an avid birder, a hiker and nature lover, an impassioned traveler, and a stamp collector. For years, she kept her bees in Wisconsin; but when it became too difficult to travel there to care for them, she moved the hive to her second-floor back porch in Chicago, becoming an urban beekeeper. She charmed her neighbors with gifts of the wonderful honey her bees made.

When cancer struck her eight years ago, she never conceded to the illness. Her drive to establish support with all medical modalities, be it western, eastern or in between was remarkable. She continued to work until it was no longer an option. She was active in her local church and helped in their fund-raisers even when she was too ill to work at her job in the hospital.

She was a vital member of her community in the Logan Square Neighborhood in Chicago and was a participant in its revitalization. Her farm background served her well as she was known to be able to fix anything, doing much of the renovation of her home herself, including stripping all the woodwork and roofing her garage.

When her medical costs became a burden, Mary’s friends and neighbors held a well-attended fund-raising event to celebrate Mary and to help defray expenses that were not covered by insurance. This spring, when Mary’s body was becoming weaker with her illness, her spirit remained strong and she and her partner, Joanne Bristol, held a healing service in March. In her final days, Mary realized that though the healing service didn’t stop the ravages of cancer, it allowed her to be present at a celebration of her life and to share that moment with her friends and relatives.

Throughout Mary’s illness, her life partner, Joanne Bristol, remained steadfast in her commitment to Mary and organized dozens of friends to assist in Mary’s care. Without Joanne’s love, support and dedication, Mary would not have been able to continue living in her home. From February until her passing, her mother, Frances Morse, stayed with Mary and Joanne, nourishing them with her home-cooked food. Her sister, Penney, was there on weekends to visit Mary and to help with the upkeep of the household. In Mary’s final week, her brother, Charles, joined Frances, Joanne, and numerous friends and remained at her side, easing her passing.

Mary was preceded in death by her father, Beverly Morse, in 1998. She is survived by her life partner, Joanne Bristol; her mother, Frances Morse; her brother, Charles Morse and his partner, Jere Smith (St. Ansgar, Iowa); her sister, Penney Morse (David Miller, Milwaukee, Wis.); and her nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews, Melissa Morse (Mason City, Iowa), Dan, Pam, Lexus, Anthony, and Aurora Morse (St. Ansgar, Iowa), Mandy and Corey Mullenbach (Stacyville, Iowa), Casey Payne and I-Ping Yang (Taipei, Taiwan), and Elliott Payne and Lindsay Labahn (Minneapolis, Minn.), and her dog, Smokey.

Mary always attended her high school class reunions where her classmates enjoyed her stories about her bees (particularly the time they escaped from the trunk into the interior of her car as she was driving.) She had already purchased tickets to her 40th class reunion. Her classmates are all invited to attend the special celebration of Mary’s life on July 5.

Mary is greatly missed by her family, friends, and neighbors.
