LeRoy A. Alitz

HOPEWELL, N.Y. — LeRoy A. Alitz, 12-year resident of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., who served for 40 years as a coach and instructor at the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., passed away Saturday (April 15, 2006) at Putnam Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Kent, N.Y. He was 86.

Son of the late John Alitz and Lena Wemken, LeRoy was born on Dec. 8, 1919, on a farm near Mason City, Iowa, where he spent his formative years with three brothers and four sisters and where he developed into a fine multi-sport athlete. He excelled in football and wrestling, and pitched softball so well that he was able to use that skill to augment his income.

His undergraduate education was interrupted by World War II, during which he served as a navigator on the USS Core, an aircraft carrier in an anti-submarine naval group. After the war, he returned to the University  of Northern Iowa to complete his education, earning a bachelor of science degree (he would eventually fulfill the requirements for a masters degree in physical education from the University of Iowa). He also resumed his athletic career, culminating in all-American honors in wrestling and a fourth-place finish in the 1948 Olympic Trials.

Most importantly, he returned to his wife, Verda, and young sons, Douglas and Dennis, who soon moved with him to Osage, Iowa, where he worked for six years as a high school mathematics teacher and coached football, wrestling and baseball. There, a daughter, Diann, joined his growing but not yet complete family.

In 1954, LeRoy accepted a position as physical education instructor and head wrestling coach at the United States Military Academy (USMA), West Point, N.Y., leading to four decades of fulfilling service to the sport of wrestling, the United States Army, his family and his God.

He served as the head wrestling coach at West Point for 23 years (1954-1977) and as an associate coach for 10 more (1977-1987). Among his notable wrestlers were Mike Natvig, two-time NCAA champion, and Bob Arvin, for whom the cadet physical development center is named.

His teams amassed 146 dual match victories and his growing reputation in the national wrestling community led to positions of responsibility such as chairman of the NCAA Rules Committee and head coach of many international teams, including the 1973 U.S. team at the University Games in Moscow.

His contributions to the sport of wrestling were recognized by his membership in several halls of fame, especially his induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1992. The citation for that induction documented that he had taught wrestling to more than 30,000 cadets, representing two-thirds of the USMA graduates to that date, certainly ranking him as one of the most prolific wrestling instructors of all time.

During his tenure as the second-longest serving USMA faculty member of the 20th century, LeRoy made contributions well beyond the bounds of the wrestling mat.

He instructed in numerous sports, including combatives, volleyball, tennis and bowling. He served as strength coach for the lightweight football team and pitching coach for the women’s softball team. He attended protestant services at West Point and served for many years as coordinator of the post chapel ushers. He also enjoyed his role as member and adviser to the USMA Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

As LeRoy matured at West Point, his family grew as well with the addition of his two youngest sons, Curtis and Jeffrey. He took special pride in the accomplishments of all his children and somehow found the time to be available for each of them and to be a loving husband to his wife, Verda. He also somehow found the time to progress from a miserable to a mediocre fisherman. His joke-telling ability followed a similar trajectory.

LeRoy was a true believer in the vital role that physical education and sports competition should play in the development of leaders of depth and character. He manifested that belief on a daily basis through his words and deeds. As cited in his biography for the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, he was “a leader who established foundations for the growth of wrestling and a teacher of its values in life.”

LeRoy is survived by his wife of 66 years, Verda Roben Alitz of Hopewell Junction, N.Y.; four sons, Douglas Alitz and wife Maggie of Newcomb, N.Y.; Dennis Alitz and wife Linda of Chelmsford, Mass., Curtis Alitz and wife Debbie of West Point, N.Y., and Jeffrey Alitz and wife Katie of Charlestown, Mass.; a daughter, Diann Drenosky and husband, Bill, of Trumbull, Conn.; sisters, Lucile Houck of Bremen, Ga., LoRee Kulhavy (twin sister) of Mason City, Iowa, and Marjorie Hansen of Sumner, Wash.; his brother, Harlan, of Mason City, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by brothers, William Alitz, of Des Moines, and Milton (Bud) Alitz, of Mason City, and a sister, Inez Holmes, of Riceville.

Viewings will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday (April 25, 2006) and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday (April 26, 2006) at the William F. Hogan Funeral Home, 135 Main St., Highland Falls, N.Y.

Funeral services will be  at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Old Cadet Chapel, West Point, N.Y. Interment will follow at Post Cemetery at the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.

A reception is scheduled for noon Wednesday at Herbert Hall (Association of Graduates), West Point.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Army “A” Club, Association of Graduates, 698 Mills Road, West Point, N.Y. 10996 or to the Narcolepsy Network, 79 Main St., North Kingston, RI 02852.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday (April 26, 2006) at Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond, Iowa. The Reverend Lowell H. Halvorson will be officiating.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 1st St. S.E., Belmond. Full military honors will be provided by the Belmond Area Military Funeral Unit following the service at the Belmond Cemetery.

Chuck was born on June 1, 1942, in Minneapolis, Minn., and graduated there before entering the U.S. Air Force. During his two tours in Vietnam, he became a POW for a short time. Upon returning to the States, he married Betty Lauden of Belmond, Iowa, in December of 1966. They had three children.

Some of his favorite things to do in the various places they lived were camping, fishing, and square dancing in Tennessee, eating shellfish in Virginia, and sightseeing and swapping customs in our home and theirs in Hokkaido, Japan. Greenland had its treasures of glaciers and cold climate. After 22 years of service in the Air Force, he retired in Sacramento, Calif. Wherever he lived, he always had one or two little ones that he spoiled.

In 1990, the family returned to Belmond when his mother-in-law entered the nursing home. They later purchased the C & G Motel from Edith Hill and then onto the CBJ’s Auto Wash. They bought a home on Lake Cornelia where he enjoyed fishing on his pontoon boat. He loved to watch wildlife and play cards during the winter months. He also loved spending time with his two grandsons. After their health started to decline, they moved back to Belmond.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter, Tammy (Mitch) Gladue of Clarion, Iowa; son, John (Lisa) of Belmond, Iowa; and son, James of Belmond, Iowa; two grandsons, Adam Gladue, and Tyler Baldwin; brother, Daniel Cole, of Forest Lake, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Vallie Cole, of Fayetteville, Ark., Frances Cole, of Minneapolis, Minn., Rosie Gardes of Klemme, Iowa, and Wilma (Marvin) Lindsay of Swaledale, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews; and many who called him “Papa.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Frances (Nichols) Cole; brothers, Joe, Ralph, Myron (Bud), and James; sisters, Mrs. Ida Mitchell, and Mrs. Irene Shores; brother-in-law, George Gerdes; two nephews; and one niece.
