Mildred Irene Paton

MASON CITY — Mildred Irene Paton, 89, of Mason City, formerly of Hampton, died Saturday (April 15, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, East Campus in Mason City.

Funeral services for Mildred Paton will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hampton United Methodist Church in Hampton with the Rev. Jerry Miller and Pastor Jim Stiles officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

Mildred was born on Aug. 25, 1916, on a farm near Webster City to Orva and Pearl (Messersmith) Hoshaw. She was married to Archibald Paton on Jan. 1, 1937, in Webster City.

Mildred worked in the meat department of Jenning Supermarket, B&W Grocery Store, and was a homemaker. She attended the Hampton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Marsha (Don) Kibsgaard, of Mason City; her son, Bob (Charlotte) Paton, San Antonio, Texas; sister, Naomi (Jack) Jones, of San Francisco, Calif.; brother-in-law, Les Pliner, Fort Dodge; grandson, Randy (Darla) Kibsgaard, of Clear Lake; granddaughters, Connie (Heath) Thompson, New Hope, Minn., Bobette (Jimmy) Rush of Portland, Texas, Melissa (Joey) Perez of San Antonio, Texas; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1996; brother, Bernard Hoshaw; sister, Evelyn Pliner; great-grandson, Casey Thompson.

Donald R. Swedberg

RUDD — Donald R. Swedberg, 66, of 1750 150th St., Rudd, passed away Thursday (April 13, 2006) at Methodist Hospital, in Rochester, Minn., after a struggle with lymphoma.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2006, at the United Methodist Church in Rudd, with the Rev. Wendy Johannesen officiating. Following the memorial services, friends are invited to join the family in the church’s fellowship hall for lunch and a time to share memories.

Memorials may be directed to the Donald R. Swedberg Memorial Fund.

Don was born on Feb. 6, 1940, in Red Oak, Iowa, the son of Lyle and Gladys (Allen) Swedberg. He moved to Rudd with his parents in 1943.

He was united in marriage to Marjorie Schriever on April 1, 1962. They had two daughters, Pam and Jan.

Don and Marge farmed outside of Rudd. Don also worked for 37 years at Omnitel Communications in Nora Springs, where he retired in August 2005.

Donnie enjoyed his four grandchildren and the special times they shared together. He enjoyed traveling to car and truck shows throughout the U.S. Donnie loved restoring old vehicles. He was a member of the Henry Hauler’s F-100 pickup club in Mason City. Donnie will miss his “coffee talk” with many friends. He is also a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church.

Don is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Rudd; two daughters and their children, Pam Engels and children, Kendra and Kiersten Engels, Longmont, Colo., and Jan (Lloyd) Trask and children, Trent and Chelsie Trask, Rockford; brother, Deryl (Pat) Swedberg; six close brothers-in-law and their families; and many nieces, nephews, and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Gladys Swedberg.

Helen J. Green

OSAGE — Helen J. Green, 68, of Osage, passed away Tuesday evening (April 11, 2006) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center following a brave battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Father John Moser officiating. Inurnment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

There will be a memorial visitation at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 17, at the Sacred Heart Church Hall with a rosary recitation at 7 p.m. followed by a Scripture service and a time for sharing.

Helen is survived by four daughters, Marsha (Mike) Stricker of Orchard, Mary Jo (Steve) Ruehlow of Osage, Marlys (Jim) Wells of Boone, and Jackie McManus of Urbandale; and one son, Jim Green, of Philadelphia, Pa. Also surviving are five brothers, Bernard (Dorothy) Walter, William (Carolyn) Walter, Jerome (Mary) Walter, Doug (Sue) Walter and Dan (Kathy) Walter, two sisters, Pat Walter and Mary Jane (Richard) Diggins; mother-in-law, Marge Green; her 10 dear grandchildren, Jerad, Shannon, Amber, Ashlyn, Alex, Chloe, Sam, Alyssa, Derek and Marshal; and her one new great-grandchild, Austin.

Helen was born Wednesday, June 16, 1937, in Austin, Minn., to Russell and Rose Walter. She graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1955. She married Marshal Green on April 4, 1959, in Austin, Minn. He passed away in 2004. Helen worked for many years and retired from Home Trust Bank in Osage.

She enjoyed cooking for her children and grandchildren; and working in her yard and decorating for the holidays. She was active in Relay for Life, the American Cancer Society and Sacred Heart Church.

CHARLES CITY — Nellie Dvorak Gerber, 98, of Charles City, died Saturday (April 15, 2006) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Nellie Gerber will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor Stanley Hayek will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.

Leo Schroeder

SHEFFIELD — Leo Schroeder, 87, died Thursday (April 13, 2006) at Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services for Leo Schroeder will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Zion St. John Lutheran Church, Sheffield with the Rev. Kent A. Mechler presiding. Interment with full military honors by Harlow Ray Massee Post No. 277 will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Leo Otto Schroeder was born on Sept. 5, 1918, at Rockwell, Iowa, a son of Carl G. and Helene (Hots) Schroeder. He attended rural schools near Sheffield and was married to Nelsine (Jensen) Schroeder on Jan. 11, 1947, at Marysville, Mo., with George Schroeder and Rose (DeVries) Springer of Thornton attending.

Leo served in the U.S. Army for four years during World War II.

He returned to Sheffield and began employment as a mechanic at the Ford garage for a period of 20 years, then worked at Sheahan Chevrolet for two years before purchasing the DX station. Leo and Nelsine operated the station for 18 years, retiring in 1983.

On June 6, 1997, Leo received the Liberty Medal for the Normandy Invasion and a certificate from Deputy Consul General Stephane Catta and Consul General DeFrance, along with many veterans at North Iowa Area Community College Auditorium.

Leo has been a lifelong Lutheran and a member of Zion St. John Lutheran Church, an active member of the Sheffield Community Club for 25 years, a member of the Sheffield Fire Department for over 50 years, a member of the American Legion for over 50 years and was a member of the color guard.

Leo was interested in building the Veteran Honor Roll Board that is displayed each Memorial Day.

He also assisted the Lion’s Club in building the Crow’s Nest at the Sheffield-Chapin football field. His hobbies include woodcrafting and yard work

Leo and Nelsine celebrated 59 blessed years of married life on Jan. 11 of this year.

Leo is survived by his wife, Nelsine; his children: Roger (Alice) Schroeder, Marshalltown and Annette Hegarty, Sheffield; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; brothers: Walter Schroeder, Thornton, Gerald Schroeder, Redlands, Calif.; sister, Gretchen Amsbaugh, Cambridge, Iowa.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Carl, George and Hans; four sisters: Ida, Anna, Lena and Luella.

Evelyn J. Zach

MASON CITY — Evelyn J. Zach, 85, of Mason City, died Friday (March 24, 2006) at the Good Shepherd Health Center. According to Evelyn’s wishes, her body was cremated.

A memorial service to honor Evelyn’s life will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E.,with the Rev. Wendy Abrahamson officiating. Inurnment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Evelyn was born on Oct. 23, 1920, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of William and Hazel (Teal) Jones. She attended school in Oskaloosa and graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1939.

On April 16, 1943, Evelyn was united in marriage to Guy F. Zach, Jr., in Tucson, Ariz. where Guy was stationed with the Army Air Corps. After the war, they returned to Oskaloosa then moved to Mason City in 1949 where they both worked at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Evelyn loved being out in nature, bird watching, and mowing her yard. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, and spending time with her sisters and other relatives.

Evelyn is survived by her son, James Zach and wife, Cynthia, of Mason City; grandson, Evan Zach of Mason City; sisters, Eilene Suiter of New Sharon, Iowa, Johnnita Jones of Oskaloosa, Shirley Wells and husband Vernie of Oskaloosa; sister-in-law, Grace Zach of Fort Collins, Colo.; many nieces and nephews.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Guy; two brothers, William and Robert Jones and her parents.

Oliver ‘Tim’ Kisner

OSAGE — Oliver “Tim” Kisner, 77, of Osage died Saturday (April 15, 2006) at his home.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 19 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Inurnment will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery with graveside military honors by the Osage American Legion Post No. 278.

There will be a gathering of family and friends on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, where there will be a scripture wake service at 7 p.m.

Tim was born March 21, 1929, near Mason City, the son of Claud E. and Cecelia (Dixon) Kisner. He graduated from Orchard High School. He served in the U.S. Army.

Tim was united in marriage to Marcellene H. Mullenbach on August 30, 1958, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. He ran a candy route, was employed at the Osage Municipal Utilities, owned and operated “Tim’s Town Pump” in Mitchell for 10 years, was a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and was a courier for the C.U.S.B. Bank. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a former president of the Osage Library Board.

Tim is survived by three sons: Timothy J. Kisner and his daughter, Britney, of Blaine, Minn., Steven P. Kisner, his wife, Kirsi, and son, Onni Oliver, of San Antonio, Texas, Rodney R. Kisner of Coon Rapids, Minn.; one sister: Mary Lou Kisner of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marcellene, on January 13, 2002; and two brothers, Ray and Clint.

Catherine Margaret Daniels Dunfee

CORWITH — Catherine Margaret Daniels Dunfee was born on March 23, 1922, in Corwith to James and Edna Houston.

Catherine graduated from Corwith High School and married John M. Daniels on March 23, 1940, in Holmes, Iowa. The couple lived in Corwith. John died on May 1, 1967.

Catherine continued to live in Corwith and worked part-time for Wagner Grocery in Corwith, the bowling alley in Kanawha, as well as for Mullins Seed Company. She was also a school bus driver. She later married Willard Dunfee. They lived in Waterloo until Willard retired, then they retired to Corwith.

She enjoyed playing cards, riding her bicycle, fishing and camping, but her greatest love was watching her grandchildren play sports.

Catherine was a member of the United Methodist Church in Corwith, the United Methodist Women, the American Legion Auxiliary as well as the Royal Neighbors.

Catherine became a resident of the Westview Care Center in Britt in September of 2001 and died there on Saturday afternoon (April 15, 2006) at the age of 84.

Survivors include her two sons, John Daniels and wife, Darlene, of Britt, and Jerry Daniels, of Crystal Lake. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John in 1967; one infant great-grandson, Noah Brown; brothers, Robert, Paul, Ed; and a stepbrother, Tom.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Corwith, with the Rev. Dan Fernandez officiating. Interment will be in the Crystal Township Cemetery in Crystal Lake.

CHARLES CITY — Edmund Voyna, 86, of Knoxville, Ark., formerly of Charles City, died Sunday (April 16, 2006) at the Johnson Medical Center in at Clarksville, Ark.

Donald Tosevigen

PLYMOUTH — Donald Tosevigen, 78, of 900 Broad St. in Plymouth, died Friday (April 14, 2006) from a fire at his residence.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2006, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1309 Kentucky Ave. S. in Mason City. Military Honors will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Donald was born on Dec. 10, 1927, in Sanborn, Iowa, the son of Peter and Ora May (Beddow) Tosevigen.

He attended Mason City High School. Following high school he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then in the U.S. Army during Korean War, where he was awarded three Purple Hearts.

He worked for Northwestern States Portland Cement Plant for 39 years as a heavy equipment operator and also was a mason laborer.

He played Santa Claus for more than 30 years in the north Iowa area. He enjoyed raising roses, playing cribbage, raising toy Pomeranians, going to Hardee’s for early morning breakfasts, spending time with his friends and family, listening to country music and going to Nashville. He was an avid Cubs and Bears fan.

He was a member of DAV, American Legion and life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 733 Iowa.

He is survived by his daughters, Glorie M. Reed, of Byron, Minn., Rita Jeziorski, of Woodstock, Ga., Pennie Wyborny and her husband Glen, of Plymouth, Tena Compton and her husband Terry, of Mason City, and Pam Van Lengen and her husband Ryan, of Mason City; and one son, Roy Tosevigen, of Plymouth and his special friend, Dory Robertson, of Manly; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lorraine Klemensen and her husband, Harold, of Clarion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Agnes; two brothers, Harold “Willie” Mansmith and Everett Mansmith; and one sister, Violet Borchardt.

Robert ‘Bob’ Marshall

STURGEON BAY, Wis .—  Robert “Bob” Marshall, 81, formerly of Mason City, died April 6, 2006, in Illinois while on a mission trip.

Bob lived in Mason City for 38 years while working for the Arrow Shirt Co. He was active in the Trinity Lutheran Church, Boy Scout Troop 14, the Ambassadors, the Masons and Shrine and Mason City Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Judy, of Sturgeon Bay; his children with first wife, the late Donna Marshall: daughter, Christine (Gary) Anderson of Lakeville, Minn., and son, R.J. “Skip” (Marcia) Marshall Jr. of Geneva, Ill.; and grandchildren, Samuel and Lindsey Marshall.

He is further survived by Judy’s daughters and their families, Gary’s children and families and all his “adopted” grandchildren and all his special kids at church. He leaves a multitude of friends of all ages throughout the country.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2006, at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Sturgeon Bay, Wis.

Memorials may be given to Boy Scout Troop 14 in care of Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, Iowa, 50401.

CLEAR LAKE — Ralph Leonard Secory, 79, Clear Lake, died Tuesday (April 18, 2006) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2006, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with Pastor Ed Bard, Chaplin of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating, with military honors by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Clear Lake. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the chapel.

The family of Ralph Leonard Secory has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in his memory.

Ralph Leonard Secory was born on March 8, 1927, in Clear Lake, the son of Ed L. and Essie (Kimball) Secory. He attended and received his education in the Clear Lake School, graduating from Clear Lake High School.

He was inducted into the U.S. Navy on Feb. 23, 1945, and served overseas during World War II until his honorable discharge on July 16, 1946. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Clear Lake and went into the plumbing business with his father.

Ralph’s passion in life was gardening and his faithful companion dog, Keisha, but his greatest love and enjoyment were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 39 years, Karen, of Clear Lake; his children, Don (Judy) Secory of Gilbert, Ariz., Mike (Bonnie) Secory of Clear Lake, Linda (Denny) Graff of Mason City, Cinda (Greg) Michel of Pittsburgh, Pa., Pam Marsh of Clear Lake, Tom (Ronda) Secory of Mesa, Ariz., and Danniele (Dwayne) Oppman of Clear Lake; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Don (Marge) Secory of Hemet, Calif., and Larry (Betty) Secory of Clear Lake, as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Steven; and a grandson, Michael.

August Paul “Auggie” Harms, the son of Reno and Ione (Tanner) Harms, was born Aug. 5, 1953, at Forest City. He graduated from Garner-Hayfield High School in 1972. Auggie served his country from 1972 to 1978 in the U.S. Army as an artillery surveyor.

On Dec. 11, 1976, he married Janine G. Blank at the United Methodist Church in Garner. They had lived in Garner, Missouri, Montana, Wisconsin and most recently in the Klemme-Goodell area. Auggie was employed as a “Master Carpenter” working throughout the Midwest.

He enjoyed his children and grandchildren, the outdoors, trapping, chess, roller skating, bowling, pool, darts, card games, horse shoes, garage sales, antique stores, collecting red ruby glass, playing frisbee and watching wrestling. Auggie took great pride in being sober for the past 20 years. He had a great sense of humor and had a wonderful outlook on life. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He was a member of the Richland Center American Legion.

Auggie is survived by his wife, Janine, of Goodell; three children, Sgt. Austen (Brandy) Harms of Hubert, N.C., Sheena Harms and fiance, Kevin Gilbert, of LaCrosse, Wis., and Tara Harms and fiance, Tony Foley, of Richland Center, Wis.; grandchildren, Kayleen and Alexander Harms; brothers, Ernest Harms of Garner, Howard (Sharon) Harms of Britt, Harley (Julie) Harms of Garner, Duane Harms of Garner and George Harms of Boone; a sister, June Harms, of Albert Lea, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Grace Monson and Frances (Joe) Benesh; and a niece, Brenda Monson.

Glen Crapser

BELMOND — Glen Crapser, 97, of Belmond, passed away Saturday (March 25, 2006) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Glen Elmer Crapser, the son of Charles and Alma Stoltenberg Crapser, was born Jan. 26, 1909, in Illinois. He grew up in the Dougherty and Rockwell areas where he attended country schools. At a very early age, Glen started working at the Sheffield Garage.

Glen was united in marriage to Juanita DeVries on Jan. 26, 1930, at Salem Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Minn. The couple made their home in Minnesota for a time and would later move to Belmond in 1934.

Glen started working in the HUB Garage in Belmond and would later open his own garage, Crapser’s. Crapser’s Garage was destroyed by the tornado in 1966. After that, Glen started working for Len Sheldon, then McLaughlin’s car dealership. Glen worked a total of 50 years for the Sheldons and McLaughlins. He was a lifetime mechanic.

Glen was a volunteer fireman with the Belmond Fire Department for 19 years. He also served on the Belmond City Council for 10 years.

Glen enjoyed woodworking. He made eight grandfather clocks for his family. Glen was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond.

Glen is survived by his wife of 76 years, Juanita; a daughter-in-law, Jackie Crapser, of LaHabra Heights, Calif.; two grandsons, Craig and wife, Karen, of Boise, Idaho, and Mark of LaHabra Heights, Calif.; three great-grandchildren, David, Aaron and Kevin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Richard, in 2005.

Timothy Charles Kellogg was born on June 27, 1985, in Jacksonville, N.C., to Timothy and Karen (Neve) Kellogg. Tim attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason City High School in 2004. After his graduation, Tim has been employed by Mason City Recycling.

Tim enjoyed work, listening to music and spending time with his brothers and sisters and family.

Tim is survived by his mother and stepfather, Karen (Ron) Portis, of Mason City; father, David Arp, of Mason City; brothers and sisters, Kendra Neve, Rusty and Ethan Thorngren, Wyatt, Holly and William Portis, all of Mason City; maternal grandmother, Shirley Neve, of Nora Springs; paternal grandparents, Marvin and Beverly Arp, of Manly; great-grandmother, Kurna Neve, of Clear Lake; and a special friend, Megan Voight. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and relatives.

He was preceded in death by brother, Cody; grandfather, Kenneth Neve; great-grandfather, Bernard Neve; and great-grandparents, Marshall and Mabel McManus.
