Milvern was united in marriage to Mary Jane Holm on June 14, 1946, at Garner, Iowa. Their union was blessed with two children, David and LuAnn.

Following their marriage, Milvern and Mary Jane farmed and raised their family on the homestead east of Klemme that Milvern had helped build with his father. Their farming operation had included raising crops and a wide array of livestock. Milvern loved life on the farm, caring for the animals and working the land, in return reaping the fruits of his labors grown from the soil. In addition to farming, Milvern was employed as a machinist at Winnebago Industries from 1970-1984. Milvern and his wife lived on the farm until moving into the town of Klemme four and one-half years ago to the community apartments. In September 2005, they moved to the Prairie View Retirement Community in Garner.

Throughout his entire life, Milvern was a loving, devoted and caring person. He receiv-ed great satisfaction from times spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. He also served on the Ell Township Board of Trustees for many years, including time spent in the role of treasurer.

Milvern enjoyed the simple things of life. In earlier years, he had shared his singing talents along with his wife providing music in quartets at funeral services. He loved to dance and the couple would often go out on Saturday evening dancing excursions. They enjoyed playing cards, touring the country side, and dining out. Wherever one saw Milvern, undoubtedly his wife and life partner, Mary Jane, would be nearby if not at his side.

Milvern enjoyed watching sports and was especially fond of the Hawkeyes, reveling in this fact with his son, David, an Iowa State graduate and avid Cyclone fan.

Those who knew Milvern will remember his legacy as a gentleman who relished time spent with his family. He was very mild-mannered and even-tempered throughout his entire life. He was very strong in his patience, faith life, a caretaker of the land and his farm animals, and a friend to all. Gerald ‘Jerry ’ Dean Allen

MASON CITY — Gerald “Jerry” Dean Allen, 78, of Cornville, Ariz., former sheriff of Cerro Gordo County for 27 years, died Friday (March 31, 2006) at the Verde Valley Medical Center in Cottonwood, Ariz.

A memorial service celebrating Jerry Allen’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 2006, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City.

His family requests that memorial contributions be made in his name to the American Heart Association (www.americanheart.org, click Donate/Memorial or call (800) 242-8721) and/or to the National Audubon Society (www.audubon.org, click Give Now/Living Tributes or call (212) 979-3085.

Gerald Dean Allen was born in Rockwell, Iowa, on Aug. 20, 1927, and graduated from Mason City High School in 1944 and Mason City Junior College in 1946. He went to work as a clerk in the Cerro Gordo County sheriff’s office at the age of 19 and was appointed a deputy in January 1947. At the age of 27, Allen ran for sheriff and was elected in November 1954. One of the youngest sheriffs in the country at the time, Allen held the office until 1981 when he resigned to become director of the Iowa Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Enforcement division. He retired from the DOT in 1987 and continued to live in Urbandale until moving to southern Oregon in 2002. Allen had recently moved to the Sedona area in Northern Arizona, a place he and his wife, Jeanne have enjoyed visiting nearly every winter for the past 14 years.

Allen served in the United States Coast Guard in World War II and the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, a member of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Council, an Iowa representative of the National Sheriff’s Association and a past president of the Sheriff’s and Deputy’s Association.

Allen was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church and this year celebrated his 50th year as a Scottish Rite Mason.

Of his long career as a sheriff, Allen said in a 1976 Globe Gazette article, “Everything I’ve done will have to stand on its own. I’d rather look at it as a career in law enforcement rather than in politics.” In his 27 years as sheriff, Allen was respected for his honesty, integrity and fairness. A reluctant politician, Allen never accepted political contributions and he ran unopposed for a major portion of his career in office.

Allen continued to work in public service after his retirement as an active member of Crime Stoppers in the Des Moines area and as a volunteer at Iowa Public Television. A Ham radio and photography enthusiast since his youth, Allen continued his love of electronics and gadgets and in his later life became an avid computer user, through which he communicated with friends and family and always kept up on the latest news in Mason City.

Among his creative outlets were stained glass, carving Sedona sandstone and playing the piano. Allen enjoyed hiking, bird watching and traveling. He was known and appreciated for his love of conversation and his keen interest in people and events of the day.

Gerald Dean Allen was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Allen; mother, Lorna Allen; and brother, Edward Allen.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary Jeanne Allen, of Cornville, Ariz.; daughter, Jennifer Allen Newton, of Ashland, Ore.; stepmother, Valera Allen, of Mason City, Iowa; brother, Meredith (Russ) Allen, of Duluth, Minn.; sister June Pringnitz, of Urbandale, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss him dearly.

Condolences and cards may be sent to: Mary Jean Allen, 4905 E. Night Hawk Drive, Cornville, AZ 86325.

Bert Coeling

KANAWHA — Bert Coeling, 86, of Kanawha, passed away exactly at noon on Monday (April 3, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. His two daughters and sons-in-law were by his side as one of his favorite songs, “In the Sweet Bye and Bye,” played in the background.

Bert was born Bartel Coelingh in Hoogeveen, Drenthe province, the Netherlands, on Dec. 1, 1919, the fourth of five children born to Wessel and Aaltje (Bennema) Coelingh. He grew up in Hoogeveen and served as a member of the Dutch Army when his country was overrun by Nazis in World War II. Bert and his brother, Gerrit, were forced into hiding and they served in the Dutch underground resistance throughout the war. Gerrit was killed by the Nazis as they retreated during the final days of the war, and the desire for change led to Bert’s immigration to the United States in December 1946.

Bert lived in St. Louis, Mo., and later in Hollandale, Minn., where he met his future wife, Martha Marie DeBoer. They both moved and worked in Grand Rapids, Mich., before they were married in Hollandale on July 20, 1950, by the Rev. Anthony Koning. They then returned to Grand Rapids, where their two daughters, Phyllis and Marilyn, were born. In 1953, they moved to Renwick, Iowa, with their family to help John and Viola Eekhoff with their farm work. Bert and Martha later moved to a farm east of Kanawha and farmed there until Bert’s retirement in 1980, when the couple moved into Kanawha. Bert and Martha had been married 52 years when Martha passed away on May 14, 2003.

Bert was a lifetime member of the Christian Reformed Church, both in the Netherlands and the U.S. He served as a member of the consistory for several years in the Kanawha church and was a strong example of his faith. He demonstrated his Dutch heritage through his love for tulips, and the tulip display he helped organize in the shape of a cross is currently growing in Kanawha.

Bert is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Jeff Hagen, and Marilyn and Roger Peters, all of Woodbury, Minn.; five grandchildren, Derek, Vanessa and Kyle Hagen, Meleah and husband, Troy Miller, and Daniel Peters. He is also survived by many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews in the U.S., the Netherlands, Brazil, and Canada.
