Robert Vernon ‘Pete’ Knight

MASON CITY — Robert Vernon Knight, 70, passed away Sunday (March 26, 2006) at the International Order of Oddfellows home in Mason City. Robert was born in Sioux City on July 10, 1935, to Robinette LaGue Knight and Gerald “Red” Knight.

Robert graduated in 1953 from Numa High School and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1955. He later transferred to the U.S. Army, where he saw service in Indochina and Korea from 1967 to 1968 and from 1971 to 1972. Robert retired from the Army in 1976 with the rank of chief warrant officer third class.

Robert received his BA in business administration from the University of Northern Iowa, and then lived in Waterloo and Marshalltown, before receiving his MPA from Iowa State University in 1987. He worked for the State of Iowa Department of Health from 1987 to 1991, as an apartment manager in Des Moines until 1996, and then as a consultant for the Triston Corp.

Robert is remembered by his father, Red; his brother, Rod (Barb); niece Terri (Bruce); great-nephews, Dan and Timothy; great-niece Madeline; and special friends Mike and Laurie.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Homestead Assisted Living, 2501 W. State St. in Mason City. Friends and relatives are welcome.

Bertha C. Monsen

FOREST CITY — Bertha C. Monsen, 94, of Forest City, died Monday (April 3, 2006) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. today at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and one hour prior to services today at the church.

Bertha Christina Monsen was born on a farm in Winnebago County, on Feb. 8, 1912, the daughter of Martin E. and Ada (Twito) Charlson. She grew up in rural Scarville and attended rural school near her home.

On March 16, 1935, she was united in marriage to Martin E. Monsen at the Scarville parsonage. The couple farmed for many years in the Scarville, Kiester and Forest City areas. Martin passed away in 1974.

Bertha worked at Lynns Department Store, Federated Clothing Store, the Forest City Bakery, Winnebago Industries and Doris Fabrics.

She was a talented seamstress with a gift for making clothing. She enjoyed baking and loved having her family and relatives into her home for Sunday dinner.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and attended Bible study there.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Ward, of Forest City; a son, Martin Monsen, of Shell Knob, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Tom (DeeAnn) Monsen, Brian (Lisa) Monsen, Jim Ward, Jeff Monsen, Robin (Julie) Ward, Pam (Larry) Gapp and Kim (Larry) Merchant; 17 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother-in-law, Ernest Riggle, of Crystal Lake, daughter- in-law, Carmen Monsen, of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Martin, in 1974; son, Eugene, in 1993; and sisters, Gilma and Agnes; and brothers, Clifford, Edgar, Royden, Morris, Homer and infant brother Alford.

Bertha’s family would like to thank the staff of the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City and the North Iowa Hospice staff for their kind, compassionate care.

Mildred Maureen Cavanaugh was born July 20, 1919, in Lohrville, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Kathryn (Kiley) Cavanaugh. Mildred was united in marriage to Robert Hall on June 17, 1939. She was united in marriage to Hugh Gillen on May 15, 1972. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Jane Hall of San Francisco, Calif.; brother, James (Joyce) Cavanaugh; sister, Rita (Paul) Coyle of Lincoln, Neb., along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Kathryn Cavanaugh; husbands, Robert Hall and Hugh Gillen; five brothers and four sisters.

Howard Duane Wendel

CLEAR LAKE — Howard Duane Wendel, 66, of the Oakwood Care Center went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday (April 4, 2006).

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2006, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Jim Allarel of the Church of Christ in Clear Lake officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Howard, a twin, was born to Harold and Liola (Kilfoil) Wendel on Dec. 6, 1939, in Mason City. He attended Mason City schools and farmed, making his home on the family farm. In 1958, he married Linda Niver. Howard loved farming and his family. All who knew him know that he had a quick smile for things he loved.

For the last 10 years, Howard had lived at Opportunity Village, first at Four Season Cottage for 9 years and then at Pioneer Cottage. The residents and staff of Opportunity Village played an important part in Howard’s life, giving him friendship, care and a place he called home. Due to his failing health, he recently moved to the Oakwood Care Center.

Howard is survived by his children, Steven Wendel of Mason City and Robin Wendel of Mason City; six grandchildren; brothers, Harold Wendel and wife, Doris, of Mason City, George Wendel of Mason City, Jerry Wendel and wife, Iris, of Mason City, Clifford Wendel and wife, Della, of Charles City, and Thomas Wendel and wife, Sharon, of Waterloo; sisters, Lila Perry of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mary Baker and Chaplain Jerry Baker of Mason City, Loyola “Sherry” Bohnsack of Mason City, and Paula Chambers and husband, John, of Waterloo.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Willard; and sister, Juanita Johnson.

Arthur Weber was born in Johnsberg, Minn., on Oct. 5, 1914, to John and Rose (Kramer) Weber. He was united in marriage to Ruth Wolff on Nov. 17, 1954, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.

He farmed on his parents’ farm and later worked as a farmhand until retiring in St. Ansgar in the 1970s.

He is survived by one sister, Regina Klecker of Owatonna; sister-in-law, Grace Weber of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ruth; two brothers, Edward and Raymond; and one sister, Irene Adams.

For the last 10 years, Howard had lived at Opportunity Village, first at Four Seasons Cottage for nine years and then at Pioneer Cottage. The residents and staff of Opportunity Village played an important part in Howard’s life, giving him friendship, care, and a place he called home. Due to his failing health, he recently moved to the Oakwood Care Center.

Howard is survived by his children, Steven Wendel of Mason City and Robin Wendel of Mason City; six grandchildren; brothers, Harold Wendel and wife, Doris, of Mason City, George Wendel of Mason City, Jerry Wendel and wife, Iris, of Mason City, Clifford Wendel and wife, Della, of Charles City, and Thomas Wendel and wife, Sharon, of Waterloo; sisters, Lila Perry of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mary Baker and Chaplain Jerry Baker of Mason City, Loyola “Sherry” Bohnsack  of Mason City, and Paula Chambers and husband, John, of Waterloo.

Junior ‘Bud’ Menke

MASON CITY — Junior “Bud” Menke, 79, of 15 Farmstead Square, died Wednesday (April 5, 2006) at home.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with Pastor Paul Nelson and the Rev. Kenneth Gehling, chaplain, Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, officiating. Inurnment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and continues one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Junior “Bud” Menke Memorial Fund.

Bud was born July 4, 1926, in Mason City, the son of Lambert and Ruth (Meinders) Menke. Bud served in the United States Navy as a seaman first class during World War II, then returned to graduate from Mason City High School in 1948 and attend junior college.

Bud and Phyllis Simeon were married on Sept. 26, 1952, and welcomed children, Lizabeth Ruth, Timothy Michael, Jodie Marie, Gregory Scott and William Kirk. Phyllis died on Oct. 5, 1975. Bud later met and married Marcia K. Dlouhy on Aug. 26, 1978, and welcomed her son, James Daniel.

Bud served his electrical apprenticeship and went on to work as a journeyman wireman for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers No. 228 for 40 years. He retired in 1989. Following retirement, Bud worked for the city of Mason City as a school crossing guard and for Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa as a security guard. He was a volunteer at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa and belonged to the Mercy Auxiliary

Bud was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and St. James Lutheran Church, Mended Hearts Chapter No. 222, and IBEW No. 228.

Bud enjoyed camping, cooking, building his family’s homes, gardening, golf and other sports. He helped start the Little League baseball program in Mason City. Bud also enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Bud liked to do machine embroidery, quilting and feeding wild birds.

Bud is survived by his wife, Marcia K. Menke, of Mason City; children, Lizabeth (Tom) Peterson of Tucson, Ariz., Timothy Menke of Los Angeles, Calif., Jodie Kush (fiance, Joel Hoover) of Tucson, Ariz., Gregory (Laura) Menke of Tucson, Ariz.; a step-son, James (Denise) Dlouhy, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Meghan Menke and Alex Dlouhy; sisters, Adeline Perry of Sedona, Ariz., Avis Miller of Elm Grove, Wis., and Phyllis Wright of Mason City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronald (Marilyn) Owen of Bettendorf and Douglas (Audrey) Owen of Clinton,; and many nieces, nephews and other family members.

Jessie Eleanor Huey

CLEAR LAKE — Jessie Eleanor (Church) Huey, 94, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (April 6, 2006) at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Memorial services and a celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 10, 2006, at the Christian Church, 302 Highway 18 West, Clear Lake, with Pastor Mark Young officiating. Inurnment will be held in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Monday at the church.

Jessie Eleanor (Church) Huey was born in Mason City, Iowa, on Sept. 22, 1911, the daughter of Albert and Grace Amy (Thorne) Church. She attended and received her education in the Mason City school system, graduating from Mason City High School. Jessie also attended and graduated from Mason City Junior College. She was united in marriage to Donald Huey on May 30, 1931, in Mason City.

Jessie was employed by the Clear Lake Independent Telephone Co., starting as a night switchboard operator saying “number please;” then when the phone company became automated, she worked in the office, retiring in 1976 and continuing as a part-time employee.

Jessie spent many wonderful years with the North Iowa Figure Skating Club, participated in their annual shows and was a volunteer instructor of the Munchkins (beginners), and received the Calvin Martin award for outstanding volunteerism in 1991. She was known as the “skating grandma” and taught into her early 80s. Jessie also was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Clear Lake.

She was a longtime member of the Clear Lake Christian Church, their CWF, taught Sunday school, nursery and was a past choir member. She was also a member and past secretary of DAR and Mothers Study Club.

As grandma and great-grandma, she loved watching their activities. A particularly enjoyable hobby was taking pictures of her family and club groups and sharing them. Anything “Clear Lake” was a target for her camera including beautiful sunsets, kites and snow scenes.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Donnarae Carrell of Birchwood, Wis., Scoop (Jan) Huey of Mason City and Dodie Huey of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Tom (Betsy) Carrell, Aura Lea Carrell, Ted (Cathy)  Carrell, Tim (Amy) Carrell, Mary Elizabeth (David) Morriss, Douglas Huey, Debbie (David) Wilson and Doreen (Chris) Bellit; great-grandchildren, Andrea, Parker, Hunter and Sam Carrell, Audra, Max (Janel) and Alex Pfannebecker, Steve and Nick Carrell, Quinn, Harrison, Noah and Oliver Carrell, John, Will and Graham Morriss, Zach Wilson, Rachael Huey, and Josh Holmes; a brother, Robert Church, of Mason City; a special niece, Barbara (Harold) Geiser, of Mason City; as well as several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, former husband, Donald Huey Sr., who died on June 15, 1994; sisters, Lael Miller, Esther Paone, Alice Overturf, Marion Tutton and Betty Bloch; and brothers, Nathan and Albert Church.

LaVonne ‘Bonnie’ Marie Mayer

RICEVILLE — LaVonne “Bonnie” Marie Mayer, 81, passed away on Friday (April 7, 2006) in her home in Riceville surrounded by her family after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Mass of resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

LaVonne was born on March 31, 1925, in Decorah to Mel and Viola Zahasky Woldrum. On Aug. 11, 1943, she married Charles Mayer and to this union seven children were born.

LaVonne was a dedicated wife, mother, and hard-worker. She started her career as an assistant to Dr. T.G. Walker at the Riceville Hospital and later became the administrator at the Riceville Community Rest Home from 1970-1989.

LaVonne’s family and friends will always remember her for being strong, faithful, and loving to everyone she knew. She enjoyed outings with her family, cooking big meals, listening to country music, and most of all, giving her love to anyone who knew her. She had a certain presence that lit up the room, and above all, the ability to make people feel special.

Those left to cherish her memory are her seven children, Donna (John) Adams of Mazeppa, Minn., Sue (Jerry) Lee of Riceville, Linda (Chuck) Weida of Riceville, Cheryl (Alvin Knode) Julius of Chester, Margaret (Allen) McKenna of Riceville, Rick (Janine) Mayer of Lime Springs, and Mike (Deb) Mayer of Lakeville, Minn.;18 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Mildred Ophelia Ouverson Meldow

FERTILE — Mrs. Mildred Ophelia Ouverson Meldow, 97, of Hoots Road, Hamptonville, N.C., passed away Wednesday (April 5, 2006) at the Yadkin Nursing Center in Yadkinville, N.C.

Mildred was born June 6, 1908, in Fertile, the daughter of John and Trena (Daley) Ouverson. She was baptized and confirmed at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile. She graduated from Fertile High School in 1925. She was employed by 20th Century Fox Studios in San Francisco, Calif., for the majority of her life until retirement.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Lee Lainas; six sisters, Ora Hill, Anna Kimble, Polly Solmonson, Norma VanNote, Alpha Ritter and Sylvia Snider; and a brother, Gaylord Ouverson.

Surviving are her son, Richard Leroy Combs, and wife, Rose; grandchildren, Cyndy Smeets, Stephen LeRoy Combs, Peter Lainas, Johnny Combs, Richard Leroy Combs Jr., Kimberly Combs and Carol Tain Combs; two great-grandchildren, Caryn Freeman and Chad McLaughlin; and six great-great-grandchildren, Rachel Cain, Morgan Cain, Erica Freeman, William Freeman, Brandon McLaughlin and Brynn McLaughlin.

Katherine Lydia Sheppard

HAMPTON — Katherine Lydia Sheppard, 82, of Hampton, passed away Saturday (April 8, 2006).

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton with burial in the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines.

Katherine Lydia Young was born in Des Moines on May 23, 1923, to Hans and Hilma Young. Her parents emigrated from Sweden and Finland and settled in Des Moines where her father was employed as a master carpenter and her mother as a homemaker. She graduated from East Des Moines High School.

Katherine married C.J. Sheppard Jr. of Hampton in Des Moines in 1942. Katherine and her husband were engaged in farming eight miles northeast of Hampton. They raised their four boys, Gary, Leslie, Gregory and Jeffrey, and in 1971, she moved to Hampton where she continued her more than 30 years of service at Hampton Distributing.

She was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in her neighborhood Mother’s Club. In 1985, she moved to Heritage Place and enjoyed many lasting friendships with her fellow residents. She enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, playing the piano and sewing.

She is survived by one brother, Henry Young, of Kansas City, Mo.; two sons, Gary (Kay) Sheppard of Hampton and Leslie Sheppard of Cedar Falls. She was the loving grandmother of Stephen (Shelley) Sheppard of Sheffield, Jennifer (Lonnie) Kathman of Ayrshire, Chris (Sherrie) Sheppard of Washington D.C., Matthew Sheppard of Des Moines and Mellisa Sheppard of Charles City. She had a very special relationship with her great-grandchildren, A.J., Jeffrey, and Kayla Kathman, Nicole and Brandon Smith, Hunter and Gunnar Myers, and Tyrone and Tyrell Sheppard. She will be sorrowfully missed by her family, friends and many whom she simply met along the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hans and Hilma; one brother, Howard William Young; and two sons, Gregory and Jeffrey.

Dr. V.C. Paulson

GREENBRAE, Calif. — Dr. V.C. Paulson, 83, of 501 Via Casitas, Apt. 116, Greenbrae, CA 94904-1928, died Thursday (April 6, 2006).

Carroll is remembered by his wife, Joan; daughter, Nancy Semorile; and sons, Jack and Dick; granddaughters, Candis Semorile, Megan Paulson and Olivia Paulson; and a grandson, Eric Paulson.

He was born on a farm in Mitchell County, Iowa. He graduated from Osage High School and Iowa State University in Ames.

A veterinarian, his first practice was in St. Ansgar, and from there he moved to California.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Margaret Paulson; a brother, Gaylon; and a sister, Twyla Paulson.

He is survived by two sisters, Joyce Hveem and Bonnie Picht.

Cremation with a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Leota Mae Thomson

LAKE MILLS — Leota Mae Thomson, 97, of Lake Mills, formerly of Overland Park, Kan., died Thursday (April 6, 2006) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Leota Mae (Knight) Thomson was born Feb. 6, 1909, in Anamosa, Iowa, to parents Lester and Clara (Staley) Knight. She was baptized at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Viola, Iowa, and graduated from Viola High School in 1926.

On June 8, 1929, Leota was united in marriage with P. Estel Thomson. The couple lived in various communities in Iowa, having resided in Kanawha for 20 years. Following the death of her husband, Leota moved to Overland Park, Kan. In August 2001, Leota moved into Mills Harbour in Lake Mills, and she became a resident of the Lake Mills Care Center in October 2003.

Leota enjoyed spending time playing bingo and cards, especially canasta, and she was active in the Rebekka Lodge while living in Kanawha.

She is survived by her children, David Thomson and his wife, Rita, of Overland Park, Kan., Donald Thomson and his wife, Kathryn, of Stevensville, Md., Lyle Thomson and his wife, Orloue, of Lake Mills, and a daughter-in-law, Meryleen Mitchell Thomson, of Virden, Manitoba; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Eleanor Thomson, of Stanwood.

Leota was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Estel, in 1976; a son, Lowell, in January 2006; three children in infancy; grandson, Steve Thomson, in 2001; and a brother, Dewayne, in 1988.

Viola M. Cummings

ST. ANSGAR — Viola M. Cummings, 93, of St. Ansgar, died Friday (April 7, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center-Osage Hospital in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in St. Ansgar with the Rev. Jay Amundson officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Viola was born May 24, 1912, in Osage to Jacob and Semina (Pederson) Jacobson. The family lived in the Osage area. She was educated in Osage schools.

On Oct. 29, 1929, she married Oliver “Mike” Cummings in Osage. Mike died April 6, 1984.

Viola worked at the Cedar Valley Produce for 25 years and for Carroll George Inc. in Northwood. She lived in St. Ansgar for a number of years.

Viola is survived by three daughters, Phyllis (Lloyd) Schallock, New Haven, Leona Zacharda, St. Ansgar, and Patricia (Robert) Bublitz, St. Ansgar; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; two nephews in Illinois; and the staff and her many friends at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oliver “Mike” Cummings; one sister; an infant sister; three brothers; three grandsons; and one son-in-law, George Zacharda.

Edna M. Mozack

BRITT — Edna M. Mozack, 84, of Britt, died Friday (April 7, 2006) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Edna Mae Mozack, the daughter of Cecil DeWitt and Lauretta Belle (Smith) Hildebrand, was born Oct. 4, 1921, at Mason City.

She attended the rural schools of Hancock County. Edna received her normal teaching certificate and continued her education at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. She then taught for six years in the rural schools of Hancock County.

On Feb. 18, 1946, she was married to Cyril E. Mozack at Bristol, Iowa. They farmed east of Britt until 1973, when they moved into Britt. After her family was raised, Edna worked at Winnebago Industries in Forest City. She enjoyed her grandchildren, sewing and bus trips.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, UMW, United Methodist Church Sewing Group, and the Britt VFW Auxiliary.

Edna is survived by her three children, Larry (JoAnn) Mozack of Mason City, Charlotte (Kenny) Hejlik of Britt and Randy Mozack of Mission, S.D.; grandchildren, Robert Mozack, Jennifer (David) Pals, Katie Mozack, Andrew (Tami) Hejlik and Christopher Hejlik; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Yvonne (Burnell) Geving of Mason City and Sandra (James) Jennings of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Carol Hildebrand, of Sun City, Ariz.; a brother-in-law, Charles Smith, of Britt; and nieces and nephews.

Alden was born July 27, 1940, at Charles City, the son of Robert and Eva Mae (Rudebeck) Crooks. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Retterath in Austin, Minn., on Nov. 17, 1962. They lived near Rudd where Alden owned a welding and repair shop. He was a member of Eden Presbyterian Church and enjoyed his grandchildren, camping, classic cars, woodworking, antiques and gardening.

Alden is survived by his wife, Dorothy Retterath Crooks, of Rudd; four children, Robert (Michelle) Crooks and their children, Rebecca and Madison, from Lakeville, Minn., Cheryl (Michael) Hathcock and their children, Andrea, Michael and AJ, from Marshfield, Mo., Angela (Kirk) Nanke and their children, Melanie and Danielle, from Cedar Rapids, and Jennifer Crooks from Iowa City; two grandchildren, Keely and Katie Sarver from Atlanta, Ga.; six siblings, Keith (Darlene) Crooks of Dubuque, David (Maralee) Crooks of Cedar Falls, Ronald (Denise) Crooks of Charles City, Kenneth (Mary) Crooks of Charles City, Janet (Duane) Wheat of Bremerton, Wash., and Diana (Bob) Reams-Clites of New Hampton; and many nieces and nephews who referred to him as Uncle Aldie.

Garland (Jack) Compston

FOREST CITY — Garland (Jack) Compston, 99, of Forest City, died Wednesday (April 5, 2006) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday at the United Methodist Church in Forest City with Pastor Jerald Swanberg officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and an hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.

Garland “Jack” Compston was born in Charleston, W.Va., on Aug. 13, 1906. He grew up in Ohio in the home of his grandparents, Newt and Sarah (Sidenstricker) Compston. In this large, loving family, his aunts and uncles were like siblings to him.

Jack left home when he was 12 years old. He attended Marion Business College in Ohio. He moved to Chicago, Ill., and found a job with a teletype firm. He later began selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door.

On June 30, 1937, he married Ann Clark at Wheaton, Ill. The couple made their home in Chicago where they owned and operated a grocery store. In 1942, they moved to a farm near Wabena, Wis., and it was here, in 1944, they bought their first movie theater. The couple eventually owned and operated several theaters and were involved with owning or leasing and improving theaters in various communities.

After a brief time in Arlington, Wash., the family returned to the Midwest and in 1954 purchased the Forest Theater in Forest City. In 1967, Jack designed and built the theater in Decorah. Jack operated the Forest Theater until retiring in 1974.

He and Ann enjoyed traveling in their travel trailers and Winnebago motor home, spending time in Texas and Florida.

Jack was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed yearly fishing trips to Canada and Minnesota with family and friends and loved hunting pheasants with his dogs. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Forest City. Jack was very focused on his family and dedicated to his work.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Cathy Compston of Forest City; granddaughter, Catina Kinney, and her husband, Scott, and great-grandchildren, Brendon and Abigail Kinney, all of Enterprise, Ala.

Jack was preceded in death by his loving grandmother; and his wife, Ann, who died on June 7, 2000.

Jessie Eleanor Huey

CLEAR LAKE — Jessie Eleanor (Church) Huey, 94, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (April 6, 2006) at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Memorial services and a celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 10, 2006, at the Christian Church, 302 Highway 18 West, Clear Lake, with Pastor Mark Young officiating. Inurnment will be held in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Monday at the church.

The family of Jessie Eleanor (Church) Huey has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Clear Lake Christian Church or to the North Iowa Figure Skating Club in her memory.

Jessie Eleanor (Church) Huey was born in Mason City, Iowa, on Sept. 22, 1911, the daughter of Albert and Grace Amy (Thorne) Church. She attended and received her education in the Mason City school system, graduating from Mason City High School. Jessie also attended and graduated from Mason City Junior College. She was united in marriage to Donald Huey on May 30, 1931, in Mason City.

Jessie was employed by the Clear Lake Independent Telephone Co., starting as a night switchboard operator saying “number please;” then when the phone company became automated, she worked in the office, retiring in 1976 and continuing as a part-time employee.

Jessie spent many wonderful years with the North Iowa Figure Skating Club, participated in their annual shows and was a volunteer instructor of the Munchkins (beginners), and received the Calvin Martin award for outstanding volunteerism in 1991. She was known as the “skating grandma” and taught into her early 80s. Jessie also was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Clear Lake.

She was a longtime member of the Clear Lake Christian Church, their CWF, taught Sunday school, nursery and was a past choir member. She was also a member and past secretary of DAR and Mothers Study Club.

As grandma and great-grandma, she loved watching their activities. A particularly enjoyable hobby was taking pictures of her family and club groups and sharing them. Anything “Clear Lake” was a target for her camera including beautiful sunsets, kites and snow scenes.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Donnarae Carrell of Birchwood, Wis., Scoop (Jan) Huey of Mason City and Dodie Huey of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Tom (Betsy) Carrell, Aura Lea Carrell, Ted (Cathy) Carrell, Tim (Amy) Carrell, Mary Elizabeth (David) Morriss, Douglas Huey, Debbie (David) Wilson and Doreen (Chris) Bellit; great-grandchildren, Andrea, Parker, Hunter and Sam Carrell, Audra, Max (Janel) and Alex Pfannebecker, Steve and Nick Carrell, Quinn, Harrison, Noah and Oliver Carrell, John, Will and Graham Morriss, Zach Wilson, Rachael Huey, and Josh Holmes; a brother, Robert Church, of Mason City; a special niece, Barbara (Harold) Geiser, of Mason City; as well as several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, former husband, Donald Huey Sr., who died on June 15, 1994; sisters, Lael Miller, Esther Paone, Alice Overturf, Marion Tutton and Betty Bloch; and brothers, Nathan and Albert Church.

MASON CITY — Paul A. Tantow, 78, of Mason City died Friday (April 7, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave. with the Rev. Jim Stiles and the Rev. Jo Frahm Watkins officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. with a Mason Service at 7 p.m.

Paul was born on Oct. 30, 1927, the son of Maynard A. and Gladys (Wise) Tantow in Manly.

He graduated from Hanlontown High School and was also a graduate from Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

Paul was united in marriage to Maxine McCoy on July 1, 1947, in Mason City.

Paul worked for Mason City Tent and Awning as an accountant for the company which included satellite offices in Sioux Falls, S.D., Mankato, Minn. and Waterloo. In his later years Paul was employed by both Mason City and Mankato Tent and Awning Companies.

He was an active member of the Benevolece Lodge No. 145, Past President/ Treasurer of the El Kahir Shriners and also was a member of the Noon Kiwanis Club.

Paul will be dearly missed by his wife of 58 years, Maxine, of Mason City; brother, Charles (Evelyn) Tantow, of Manly; daughters, Carol (Jim) Hook, of Mesa, Ariz., Nancy (Dave) Halfpap of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren, Kim Slezak, of Gilbert, Todd (Jill) Helland of Mesa, Ariz., Jason (Jennifer) Halfpap, of Urbandale, and Joshua (Jessica) Halfpap of Pensacola, Fla.; great grandchildren, Kelsey, Brianna, Addison, Haley, Jada and another to arrive in May. Paul is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Colleen (Byford) Rogness, Wilma (Chester) Amundson and John Moore.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maynard and Gladys Tantow; an infant sister and his grandparents.

Maxine Elaine Poole

CLEAR LAKE — Maxine Elaine Poole, 85, of Apple Valley, 405 27th Ave. South, in Clear Lake, died Sunday (April 9, 2006) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St. in Clear Lake, with Richard Scott, Lay Assistant at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake officiating.

Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 East in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the chapel.

Maxine Elaine Poole was born on Dec. 25, 1920, the daughter of Ole and Ingeborg (Klevrud) Skogen in Thompson. She attended and received her education in the Thompson and Lake Mills Schools.

On Jan. 8, 1940, she was married to John Albert Poole whom she cherished and loved with all her heart for the rest of her life.

Maxine worked for Food Land and Red Owl Foods before going to Ritters Nursing Home where she worked for ten years and helped care for her mother.

Maxine enjoyed the Fourth of July, where she would always look for her grandchildren. She looked forward to her daughter Beverly coming over to the Lake with her grandchildren, so they all could go to the beach and then walk up to the Corner Drug Store for a Cherry Coke. Maxine also liked to gamble and would go whenever she got the chance. She loved playing cards with her daughter Beverly and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For 20 years Maxine would go on a summer vacation out West with her son Ron and daughter-in-law, Shirley.

Maxine loved her family and in very special ways touched your life, and the memories will remain there forever.

Left to cherish her memory is her son; Ron Poole, and his wife Shirley, of Clear Lake; five grandchildren: Dawn Liekweg, and her husband Todd, of Rockwell, Michelle Wyborny, and her husband Dan, of Rock Falls, Jon Mariner, and his wife Sheryl, David Mariner, and his wife Kim, and Rod Mariner, and his wife Jodi, all of Mason City; fifteen great-grandchildren, Chelsey, Casey and Cheyenne Liekweg, Weston, Dalton and Macy Jo Wyborny, Joseph, Kristin, Brittany, Dylan, McKenzie, Jessica, Alex, Lucas, and Erika Mariner, as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband John of 66 years, who died on March 25, 2006; her loving daughter Beverly; her parents; two brothers, Helmer and Oscar; and five sisters, Anna, Olga, Ida, Irene, and Agnes.

Helen M. Wahlin

Titonka — Helen M. Wahlin was born on March 11, 1925, in Sigourney, the daughter of Paul and Erma Wagner Miller.

She grew up in Sigourney and, in 1942, was united in marriage to Billy Adams. They had one daughter, Billie. Billy died defending our country in World War II.

On June 14, 1946, Helen was united in marriage to James L. Wahlin in Sigourney. Jim and Helen had three daughters: Shirley, Peggy and Beverly. After their marriage, the couple lived in various Iowa communities including Mason City and Des Moines.

For the last 16 years, Helen has made her home in Titonka. Jim and Helen loved the friendliness and caring of a small community. They especially enjoyed being close enough to two of their grandchildren to be involved in their busy lives. Due to illness, Jim was unable to travel as often as they would have liked to visit their children and grandchildren.

Titonka became the center of the family activities. The couple’s loving home welcomed all the family anytime, day or night. Jim died on Sept. 21, 1994. Helen’s home continued to be the center for the family until her death.

Helen loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and reading. Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Titonka American Legion Auxiliary.

Helen died on Saturday (April 8, 2006) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona at the age of 81, after a long illness.

She is survived by her daughters, Billie, and Bill Werner of Anamosa, Shirley and Doyle Trenary of Titonka; Peggy and Paul Austin of Pekin, Ill., and Beverly and Leonard Abels of Earlham; six grandchildren, Tara and Jim Overschmidt, Kelly and Gene Williams, Julie and Scott Fitzpatrick, Tom Austin, Becky and Mark Baas and Molly Trenary; six great-grandchildren, Jason, Tiffany, Nicholas and Erin Williams, Zachary and Elizabeth Overschmidt.

She is also survived by three sisters, Dorthy, Pauline and Mary Francis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim; and brother, Homer Miller.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Titonka.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Titonka United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robin L. Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Buffalo Township Cemetery.

Junior ‘Bud’ Menke

MASON CITY — Junior “Bud” Menke, 79, of 15 Farmstead Square, died Wednesday (April 5, 2006) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E. with Pastor Paul Nelson and the Rev. Kenneth Gehling, chaplain, Mercy Medical Center North Iowa officiating. Inurnment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation was held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and will continue one hour prior to services today at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Junior “Bud” Menke Memorial Fund.

Bud was born on July 4, 1926, in Mason City, the son of Lambert and Ruth (Meinders) Menke. Bud served in the United States Navy as a Seaman 1st Class during World War II, then returned to graduate from Mason City High School in 1948 and attend Junior College.

Bud and Phyllis Simeon were married on Sept. 26, 1952, and welcomed children, Lizabeth Ruth, Timothy Michael, Jodie Marie, Gregory Scott, and William Kirk.

Phyllis died on Oct. 5, 1975. Bud later met and married Marcia K. Dlouhy on Aug. 26, 1978, and welcomed her son, James Daniel.

Bud served his electricial apprenticeship and went on to work as a journeyman wireman for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers No. 228 for 40 years. He retired in 1989. Following retirement, Bud worked for the City of Mason City as a school crossing guard and for Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa as a security guard. He was a volunteer at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa and belonged to the Mercy Auxiliary

Bud was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and St. James Lutheran Church, Mended Hearts Chapter No. 222, and I.B.E.W. No. 228.

Bud enjoyed camping, cooking, building his family’s homes, gardening, golf and other sports. He helped start the Little League baseball program in Mason City. Bud also enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Bud liked to do machine embroidery, quilting, and feeding wild birds.

Bud is survived by his wife, Marcia K. Menke, of Mason City; children, Lizabeth (Tom) Peterson of Tucson, Ariz., Timothy Menke of Los Angeles, Calif., Jodie Kush (fiancé, Joel Hoover) of Tucson, Ariz., Gregory (Laura) Menke of Tucson, Ariz.; step-son, James (Denise) Dlouhy, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Meghan Menke and Alex Dlouhy; sisters, Adeline Perry of Sedona, Ariz., Avis Miller of Elm Grove, Wis., and Phyllis Wright, of Mason City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronald (Marilyn) Owen, of Bettendorf, and Douglas (Audrey) Owen, of Clinton,; many nieces, nephews and other family members.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, and their infant son, William Kirk.
