Walter Howard
Finneman was
born May 20,
1939, in Albert
Lea, Minn., to
Walter E. and
Genevieve L.
(Wilcox)
Finneman. Walter
moved to Mason
City from
Minnesota at the
age of 3 and
attended school
in Mason City.
While in high
school, Howard
was a champion
wrestler,
earning his way
to the state
tournaments all
four years. He
graduated from
Mason City High
School in 1958.
"Howie," as he
was fondly known
by his family
and friends, met
Rose Marie Berg
while in high
school. The
couple was
united in
marriage in
October of 1958.
They became the
proud parents of
a son, James
Finneman. The
marriage later
dissolved.
On Jan. 12,
1962, Howard was
inducted into
the United
States Air Force
and served his
country for the
following four
years. After
honorably and
faithfully
completing his
military duties,
Howard was
formally
discharged from
the Air Force on
Jan. 11, 1966.
Howie was united
in marriage to
Priscilla
"Penny"
(Olthoff)
Colglazier on
Dec. 31, 1980,
in Mason City
after becoming
acquainted while
attending a
dance at the
Elk's Lodge.
Together, they
treasured each
other's company,
listening and
dancing to
country music,
taking trips to
shows in
Branson, Mo.,
going for long
drives,
sightseeing and
attending dinner
theatres in
Chanhassen,
Minn.
The number of
children grew in
Howie's life, as
he became the
step-father to
three more
children
following his
new marriage.
Howie was
especially
devoted to
Penny's youngest
daughter,
Sherry, who was
3 years old at
the time. Sherry
resides at
Exceptional
Opportunities in
Burt, Iowa,
where she
receives
specialized care
due to cerebal
palsy. Sherry
looked forward
to "Papa's"
weekly visits
and UNO games.
Howie was
employed for
many years at
Con-Agra Foods
(formerly Armour
Meat Packing) in
Mason City. He
retired in
November of
2004.
Howie was known
by his family
and friends as
an extremely
active man who
loved being "on
the go." He
savored time and
treasured life's
moments at his
own pace and was
many times the
instigator of
fun.
During his
earlier years,
Howie enjoyed
family vacations
and was a member
of the River
City Radio
Control Club
where, as a
hobby, he built
and flew model
airplanes. He
was also a
member of the
River City Snow
Hawks
Snowmobiling
Club. Howie was
currently a
member of the
First United
Methodist Church
in Mason City.
Some of Howie's
favorite leisure
activities and
interests
include
collecting
"Tweety Bird"
memorabilia
("Puddy Tat" was
on the license
plate of his
yellow Mercury
Cougar),
attending family
gatherings and
picnics,
especially with
all his in-laws
and collecting
pictures and
pieces of
cougars, eagles
and deer. He was
quiet, personal
and attentive to
his Christian
faith. Howie had
a passion toward
new, clean cars,
especially
Cougars, and
engaging in play
on the floor
with his
grandchildren.
Howie was also
impartial in his
support and love
for both the
Iowa Hawkeyes
and the Iowa
State Cyclones.
Howie will be
dearly missed by
his family and
friends who have
described him as
a confidant to
many and a kind,
gentle and
patient man who
seemed to always
have a camera or
camcorder in
hand.
He is survived

Ruth Eleanor
Welsh, born May
24, 1915,
dedicated her
life caring for
the sick,
elderly and
dying, working
as a nurse's
aide in nursing
homes and
hospitals. She
lovingly cared
for her parents
in their senior
years.
Her home for 30
years at 113 8th
Street S.W.,
Mason City,
Iowa, was always
open to any
stray animal
wandering in her
yard — birds,
dogs, cats and
bunnies. She was
especially fond
of her dog,
Porky, who lived
with her for
many years.
Ruth was one of
five children
born to August
and Johanna
O'Green,
immigrants from
Sweden. She
married in 1935
and was blessed
with a son,
Larry Dean
Welsh. Her
daughter, Joanna
Rae Welsh, died
at birth.
In her youth,
Ruth worked at
Decker's/Armour
Packing Plant
and the Motorola
Radio Plant. She
then took
classes to
become a nurse's
aide.
Ruth cared for
patients at the
IOOF Home, Park
Hospital, and
North Iowa
Medical Center
until she
retired. She
cared for each
patient as if
they were
family. Mrs.
Welsh has been a
resident of the
IOOF Home for
the past seven
years. She was
compassionately
and superbly
cared for by the
staff, many of
whom worked with
her in earlier
years. The staff
kept her
comfortable,
groomed, fed and
loved to the
end, fondly
calling her
"Ruthie." She
would have
celebrated her
90th birthday
May 24th.
Ruth is survived
by her son,
Larry Dean Welsh
(Sondra),
Centennial,
Colorado, six
grandchildren,
Richard Welsh
(Joyce), Algona,
David Welsh
(Joann), Clear
Lake, Dennis
Welsh, Belmond,
Lon Welsh
(Teresa),
Broomfield,
Colo., and
Kristin Welsh,
Denver, Colo.;
nine
great-grandchildren,
Travis and Lisa
Welsh ( Ames and
Clear Lake),
Ryan Mulso (St.
Paul, Minn.),
Eric, Danielle
and Joseph Welsh
(Nora Springs),
Melody, Drew and
Chase Welsh,
(Broomfield,
Colo.) a sister,
Hulda Ringis,
(Mason City) and
her many
cherished nieces
and nephews and
their children.
She always
brought gifts of
her baking and
trinkets every
time she stopped
by for a visit.
Preceding her in
passing are her
daughter,
parents, a
sister and two
brothers.
She will be laid
to rest next to
her daughter at
Elmwood-St.
Joseph Cemetery.
