BUFFALO CENTER — Darrell Gjerstad, 57, of Howard Lake, Minn., formerly of Buffalo Center, Iowa, died on Sunday (Jan. 9, 2005) at the Buffalo Hospital in Buffalo, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center, with Mr. Perry Aalgaard officiating, Burial will take place at Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St. N.W. in Buffalo Center and will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Kalcey J. Schmitt
MASON CITY — Kalcey J. Schmitt, 24, of 507 23rd St. S.W., died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2005) at home.

Joel R. Canchola
WHEELING, Ill. — Joel R. Canchola, 69, of Wheeling, Ill., died on Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2005) at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hursen Funeral Home in Hillside, Ill.
The family will receive visitors from 3 p.m. until time of services on Wednesday.
Joel was born and raised in the Chicago area. He spent his working years as a printing press operator in the Chicago area.
Joe is survived by a daughter, Lori (Randy) Gelner, of 14381 Banyan Lane, Rosemont MN 55068; a son, Stephen J. (Ana) Canchola, of 19 Park Lane, Clear Lake IA 50428; four grandchildren; one sister; and three brothers.

Dorothy M. Michaelson
FOREST CITY — Dorothy M. Michaelson, 89, formerly of Forest City, died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2005) at the Olathe Good Samaritan Center in Olathe, Kan.

Maurice V. Milton
MASON CITY — Maurice V. Milton, 91, of Mason City, died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2005) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. with the Rev. Larry Day officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.
Memorials may be directed to the Maurice Milton Fund.
Maurice was born Oct. 11, 1913, in Little Cedar, Iowa the son of Henry and Agnes (Mitchell) Milton. He grew up on a farm west of Little Cedar, where he enjoyed many fond memories with his siblings.
After graduating from Little Cedar Consolidated High School he worked for Standard Oil, before being drafted into the Army in 1941.
Upon completion of boot camp he married Teresa Brattrud in Rolla, Mo. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers in Alaska helping to build the Alcan Highway, and in the Aleutain Islands.
After returning home from the Army he worked as an oil distributor in Jesup, Iowa, for five years before moving to Marble Rock in 1951; he then worked for Oliver Tractors in Charles City for eight years.
He then moved to the Manly area where he farmed until 1964, then moving to Mason City to work for the Globe Gazette newspaper until his retirement.
After retirement Maurice worked his summers at the I-35 Rest Area Information Center.
Maurice was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, and the River City Squares and the Balance and Swing Square Dance Club.
Maurice is survived by his daughter, Janice and husband Dale Clapper of Clear Lake; granddaughter, Denise and husband Jeff Powers of Indian Mound, Tenn.; grandsons, David Clapper and wife Christine and Chad Clapper and wife Angela, both of Clear Lake; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Lloyd Milton of Osage; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, William and Leslie Milton and sister, Laura Ethan.

Imogene ‘Gene' L. Elbert
ALGONA — Imogene "Gene" L. Elbert was born June 11, 1917, in Kanawha, the daughter of Lester and Vera Davison Roderick. She attended school and later graduated from Lone Rock High School in Lone Rock, Iowa.
On Oct. 26, 1936, Imogene was united in marriage to Michael Elbert in Algona, Iowa.
After their marriage, the couple farmed west of Algona, and in the early 1940, moved east of Algona and farmed until 1961, before moving north of Algona where they farmed and enjoyed remodeling and redecorating their home.
In the past, Gene had worked at Carson's and also had sold Avon. The couple moved to Van Buren Terrace in Algona in September of 2000.
On Nov. 8, 2001, they moved into Algona Manor. The couple enjoyed 66 years of marriage before Mike died on Dec. 14, 2002.
Gene enjoyed cooking, baking, knitting hats for her grandchildren and also donated many hats she made to the needy, making rosaries and collecting brass.
She was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church.
Gene died on Saturday (Jan. 8, 2005) at the Algona Manor Care Center, at the age of 87.
She is survived by her children: Sondra and Joe Rahm, of St. Benedict; Roderick and Kathy Elbert of North Mankato, Minn.; Edward and Connie Elbert of Algona; Michaela and Michael Brass of Rudd; Jan and Gary Brown of Swaledale; 24 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two sisters, Berneyce Geilenfeld and Margaret Jensen; grandson, Joseph Rahm; granddaughter, Kathy Jo Rahm and a great-grandson, Kellen Rahm.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona, with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona with Father Paul Eisele officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Catherine ‘Kay' Hiscocks
BRITT — Catherine "Kay" Hiscocks, 67, of Britt, passed away Sunday (Jan. 9, 2005) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.
Funeral Mass for Catherine Hiscocks will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt with Father Michael Schueller officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W. with an 8 p.m. prayer service.
Catherine was born May 1, 1937, in Duncan, Iowa. She was the daughter of William J. and Blanche B. (Kopacek) Paca.
She attended Garner High School where she majored in office training.
She was employed at Maben Insurance her senior year for on-the-job training, and after graduating in 1955 started working at the First State Bank in Britt.
She married Monte B. Hiscocks on April 22, 1958, at St. Wenceslaus Church in Duncan. They lived and worked on a farm south of Britt.
She was a 60-year member of the Catholic Workman and was a very active member of St. Patrick's Church in Britt.
Kay loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed Thursday morning coffee clatch, her card club groups and outings with friends.
Kay lived her life with a strong faith, genuine kindness, compassion and thoughtfulness for others. She will be greatly missed by many.
Catherine is survived by her children, Monte William of Britt; Michael and his wife Elisabeth (Lisa) of Plano, Texas; David and his wife Hanh of Katy, Texas; Lisa Loecher and her husband Ron of Cedar Falls; and Carmen Jamtgaard and her husband Mark of Britt; eight grandchildren: Cory, Zachary and Emma Hiscocks, Ty Hiscocks, Isaac, Luke and Cael Loecher, and Katherine Jamtgaard; her mother Blanche Paca of Britt; four sisters: Marjorie Hansen and her husband Ronald of Britt, Irene Raber and her husband Jan of Kanawha; Rita Haan and her husband Ralph of Richmond, Minn., and Becky McCormick and her husband Paul of Rollingstone, Minn. and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Monte; and her father, William.

Darren S. Dickerson
CLEAR LAKE — Darren S. Dickerson, 45, 706 10th Ave N., Clear Lake, died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.
Memorials may be directed to the Darren S. Dickerson Memorial Fund.
Darren was born March 28, 1959, in Hampton, the son of Gary and Susan (Aman) Dickerson. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1977.
Darren married Lori Post July 2, 1977.
Darren graduated from Hawkeye Tech School in 1979 with a degree in police science.
They moved to Salt Lake City in 1980 where he worked at Fleming Foods as warehouse manager. He transferred to Portland, Ore. in 1993. They returned to Clear Lake in 1995 to raise their family.
He worked for Fieldstone Cabinetry in Northwood, and later Kelly Temps. Darren started working for the Cerro Gordo Treasurer as deputy treasurer on June 21, 1999. Over the last year, he has been on the UAT team. He was one of 17 statewide Iowa county treasurer staff members selected to test and critique the new motor vehicle system as it was being developed by the IDOT and Archon Technologist. He had spent three days a month for a year proudly working on this project.
Darren was the current president of the Mercy-City Lehigh Family Credit Union.
Ben, Alex and Brianne were the most important part of his life; he loved spending his time and energy with them and was very proud of each one of them.
He enjoyed watching NASCAR races, "Lord of the Rings", reading, and, when living in Salt Lake City, skiing and hiking in the desert.
Darren is survived by his three children, Ben Dickerson and his fiancée, Amber Hanson, of Iowa City; Alex Dickerson and Brianne Dickerson, of Clear Lake; his parents, Gary and Susan Dickerson, of Eldora; one brother, Don Dickerson and his wife, Jodi, of Albert Lea, Minn.; and one sister, Debra Dickerson, of Des Moines.

Kathryn Margaret Nath
RICEVILLE — Kathryn Margaret Nath, 91, formerly of Riceville, passed Thursday (Jan. 6, 2005) at the Wildwood Grove in LeRoy, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville, with the Rev. Michael Parris officiating. Burial will be in Riceville Cemetery.
Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville.
Kathryn was born March 10, 1913, the daughter, of George Henry and Christina Mussman Kempf in Monroe Township near Dysart, Iowa.
As a young girl, she moved with her parents to her grandparents' farm east of Riceville. She attended country school until attending high school in Riceville. She graduated in 1930 from Riceville High School.
In 1932 she was married to Walter Nath at the Little Brown Church. Kathryn had met her future husband at a dance. Dancing was something they enjoyed very much the rest of their life together.
Kathryn and Walt celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary with all their family in 1987, two years before Walter passed away in 1989.
She was a homemaker and a Gold Star Mother.
Their first home was in Cresco, where Walt worked for the Howard County Road Maintenance Department.
Kathryn would say that during those years she wished for snow so Walt would have work. During their time in Cresco, two sons were born, Ray and Richard. In 1940, the family moved to her parents' farm where she continued to be a wife, mother and homemaker.
She enjoyed making a beautiful home for her family and tending her vegetable and flower gardens. Kathryn was an active member of the Riceville Flowerette Club. While on the farm another son, David, was born.
Walt and Kathryn were members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, where Kathryn was an active member of the Ladies Aid.
Kathryn loved to socialize with her friends and neighbors, playing cards and taking yearly trips to California.
When they retired from farming, Kathryn and Walt moved to Riceville in 1977.
During their later years on the farm and their early years in town, Kathryn was active in her husband's Funks seed corn dealership. She kept books and helped to organize deliveries and special events.
The greatest joy in Kathryn's life was her family: her children, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.
Kathryn is survived by her sons, Richard Nath and his wife, Myrna, of Riceville, and David Nath and his wife, Lynda, of Anaheim, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Delores Ross, of San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Brian, Doug and his wife, Trudy, Dana, Debbie Wright, Chris and wife, Lori, Ryan and Jeff; five great-grandchildren, Eric, Jill, Patrick, Ben Wright and Laura Wright.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter in 1989; a son, Ray, in 1955; and a daughter-in-law, Ardyth, in 2000.

Marjorie Ann Ambroson
IOWA CITY — Marjorie Ann Ambroson, 78, of 1259 Shannon Drive, Iowa City, died Saturday (Jan. 8, 2005) at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a short illness.
Per Marjorie's request, there will be no service. Cedar Memorial Home in Cedar Rapids, is in charge of arrangements.
Her body was cremated and her eyes were donated to macular degeneration research.

Marjorie was born on Aug. 25, 1926, to Lloyd and Bethel (Douglas) Kellogg. She married Carroll Ambroson in 1947 in Mason City. He died in 1968.
Marjorie lived most of her life in Mason City, until a few years ago when she moved to Iowa City to be closer to her children.
She worked at Armour, formerly known as the Jacob E. Decker meatpacking plant, Mason City. She later worked for the Mason City school administration.
Survivors include her children, Kris, of Cedar Rapids, and Alexis (Monny), of Tiffin; three sisters, Ruth Workman, of New Jersey, Gladys Messerly, of Waterloo, and Elizabeth Raila, of Connecticut. She is also survived by eight nieces and nephews, and her granddogs and grandcats.
She will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a niece, Linda.

Alger ‘Shorty' Amble
NEW HAMPTON — Alger "Shorty" Amble, 77, of New Hampton, died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2005) at the New Hampton Care Center of natural causes.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church (Crane Creek), rural Lawler with the Rev. Vincent C. Fricke officiating.
Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Reilly Ridge.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton and an hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.
Alger Norman Amble was born March 22, 1927, on a farm east of Jerico, the son of John and Clara (Knutson) Amble. He was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Saude.
He began his education at the West Saude School and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1945. After his schooling he farmed with his father.
On Oct. 14, 1950, Alger was united in marriage to Norma Hurd at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Reilly Ridge. Following their marriage the couple farmed north of Jerico.
Alger began working at Supersweet Feeds in New Hampton in 1959. He retired from farming in the early 1980s, but continued at Supersweet until his retirement in 1989. Following his retirement he began working as a night manager with his wife at the Super 8 in New Hampton.
The couple moved to New Hampton in 2000.
In his younger years, Alger enjoyed playing baseball with the Jacksonville, New Hampton, Cresco, and Lourdes teams.
He also played guitar in the Jerico Hotshots Band with Veronica Weigel, Alvie Ellingson and Alfred Anderson and he enjoyed coaching 4-H softball.
He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Alger is survived by his wife, Norma, of New Hampton; six children, Vicki (Robert) Ramsey of Center Point, Jack (Deb) Amble of Clear Lake, Mary Eileen (Adrian) Lofte of Ossian, Pat Sorenson of Decorah, Amanda (Paul) Trewin of New Hampton, Jennifer Johnson and her special friend, Mark Jacobson, of Rochester, Minn.; 11 grandchildren, Jay Ramsey, Sarah (Andre) Huscko, Dan Amble, Ryan (Jenny) Amble, Abigail, Lydia, and Eleanor Lofte, Emily Sorenson, Brittany and Lucas Trewin, and Garrett Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Alvin; granddaughter, Stephanie Thur; grandson, Nicholas Sorenson; and a sister, Eileen Amble.

Marian Elaine Boots
DUMONT — Marian Elaine Boots, 76, of Dumont, died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2005) at the Dumont Health Center in Dumont of natural causes.
She was born March 1, 1928, in Dumont, daughter of Ray Clinton and Edna Margaret Stafford Boots.
She attended public school and graduated from the Dumont High School in 1946. She lived her entire life in Dumont. She worked 17 years in the mercantile store known as Jake and Jim's, spent nine years as a secretary for Dr. M.D. Enna and then took a job in the Butler County Treasurer's Office, from which she retired in 1990 after 17 years.
Marian was a former chairwoman of the Red Cross Chapter. She was one of seven people who started the Dumont Historical Society and taped Sunday church services at the Dumont United Methodist Church as well as being a Sunday School teacher at the United Brethern Church of Dumont. She delivered church service tapes to the Dumont Health Care Center residents and to those unable to attend church.
She served as an elector for the Butler County Hall of Fame as well as being the corresponding secretary with the alumni dinner for graduates of Dumont Community High School.
She delivered mail to neighbors unable to go to town as well as staying with friends so they were able to stay in their own homes.
Marian was a member of the Dumont Historical Society, Mission Club, Rebekah Lodge, and the New Hope United Methodist Church of Dumont.
Marian enjoyed spending time with family as well as writing letters and visiting with her many friends.
Survivors include her sister, Carmen Hemmen, of Dumont; sister-in-law, Frances Boots, of Waterloo; two nieces, Christie Hemmen, of Dumont, Mary Lou (James) Rogers, of Garner; and one nephew, Fred (Sandy) Hendrickson, of Waverly.
Preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Marlys VanHorn and infant sister, Connie Boots; and one brother, Vincent Boots.
Graveside services will be held at a later date with burial in the Dumont Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

GREENE — Otto E. Kielman, 87, formerly of 209 S. Second St., Greene, died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2005) at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, in Greene, with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, where there will be a public scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services on Friday at the church.

Otto E. Kielman
GREENE — Funeral service for
Otto E. Kielman, 87, formerly of
209 S. Second St., Greene, will

Otto Elvin Kielman was born Nov.
18, 1917, near Bristow, West
Point Township, Butler County, a
son of George and Tillie
(Miller) Kielman, and died
Sunday (Jan. 9, 2005) at the
Community Nursing Home in
Clarksville.
He received his education in
rural Butler County schools, and
as a young man worked with his
father to help support the
younger members of the family.
On Nov. 18, 1938, he was united
in marriage to Hazel Jeanette
Boyd at the Bristow Reformed
Church.
Following their marriage, they
lived with his parents until
they started farming southwest
of Greene.
For 30 years, Otto and Hazel
farmed in the rural Clarksville
area until 1970, when they moved
into Greene.
For the next 10 years, Otto
worked for the City of Greene.
In 1975, Otto and Hazel opened
Kielman's Koffee Shop, which
they operated for 16 years. In
1991, they sold the business and
retired.
In February 1994, Hazel entered
the Community Nursing Home,
where she died on Dec. 5, 1996.
He entered the Community Nursing
Home Sept. 4, 2001.
Otto had a great love for music.
He played the concertina, and
enjoyed going with Hazel to
dances and traveling to New Ulm
to the Polka Fest. They also
made trips to Nashville and
Disney World. Otto's other
interests included gardening and
watching television.
He was a faithful member of
First Presbyterian Church of
Greene.

Kalcey was born Dec. 28, 1980,
in Ashley, N.D., the daughter of
Anthony and Victoria (Eckman)
Schmitt. Kalcey graduated from
Mason City High School in 1999,
and earned her associate of arts
degree at NIACC in 2001. She was
currently an aspiring student,
majoring in psychology at UNI,
hoping one day to help young
children.
She enjoyed singing, writing and
keeping abreast with the news of
the world. She enjoyed fun times
with her family, especially her
new niece, Makenna. She loved
filling up on her mother's
homemade knephla soup and cream
chicken with mashed potatoes.
Even the most turbulent of times
would not suppress her eager,
heart-warming smile. Although
blind, she was able to see much
more than those who would not
see. Her courageous efforts
touched and inspired countless
individuals.
The Lord was looking for a
special person and he took the
most special of them all. A
beautiful mind has passed, and
we will never forget her
generous infectious smile. She
was an amazing person who will
be missed dearly. Her absence
will be forever lived.

Mrs. Frederick graduated from
Independence High School in 1928
and Pitze's Beauty College in
Waterloo 1932.
She and her husband operated
several beauty saloons in
Independence and Waterloo.
She was also employed for
several years by Bell Telephone
in Waterloo as a telephone
operator.
After retirement, she and her
husband were house parents at
Mooseheart Children's Orphanage
in Aurora, Ill.
She was a life member of the
Women of the Moose, member of
Eastern Star and a Bell
Telephone Ding-a-Ling.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mary Lou (Doug) Brown of Lake
Placid, N.Y.; a son, Roger (Kim)
Frederick of Waterloo; four
grandchildren, Allison Frederick
of Iowa City, Ryan Frederick of
Waterloo, Tyler Brown of
Portsmouth, N.H. and Robin
Anthony of Lake Placid, N.Y.;
and two great-grandchildren.

Wencil Dean Small
ALTA VISTA —Wencil Dean Small
passed from this earth on
Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2005). Wencil
was critically injured in a farm
accident on Tuesday, Jan. 4,
2005, and died as a result of
those injuries. While death took
him too soon, it fittingly came
while he was pursuing his
lifelong passion.
Wencil Dean Small was born to
Charles and Blanche (Zupp) Small
on May 22, 1923 at Washta, Iowa.
He graduated from Washta High
School and began his farming
career following graduation. He
farmed with his father until his
marriage to Roberta Hegstrom of
Lawton, Iowa, on May 29, 1947.
The couple spent their first
three years farming near Lawton,
Iowa. They moved to the
Rembrandt area in 1950, and have
lived there to present. They
raised four children in their
home south of Rembrandt, Marcia,
Larry, Karen and Gary.
Wencil was an active member of
Rembrandt United Methodist
Church.
For much of his life he raised
assorted livestock, cattle,
hogs, chickens, ducks, lambs and
even Shetland ponies. He scaled
back to just grain farming later
in life.
The free time allowed him and
Roberta to travel, including
visiting longtime friends,
George and Helen Thompson in
Arizona, and traveling to
Europe.
Wencil and George made annual
fishing trips up north for many
years. Wencil bled International
Harvester Red, owning a series
of IH and CaseIH tractors. He
was a Scott Township Trustee at
the time of his death.
He enjoyed the company of his
rat terrier, Skeeter.
He was involved in the area wind
farm operated by Waverly Power
and Light, with two windmills on
his land.
Wencil is survived by his wife,
Roberta; sister and
brother-in-law, Joyce and John
Dumkreiger; children, Marcia and

Diann was born Aug. 11, 1942, in
Norfolk, Neb., to Harold and
Irene (Mollhoff) Foss. She
graduated from Norfolk High
School in 1960, and attended
Norfolk Junior College. She
graduated from the University of
Nebraska at Lincoln in 1965.
While working for the Campfire
Girls in Lincoln, Neb., she met
and married Van Ivor Renoe on
Sept. 30, 1967, in Norfolk.
After marrying they moved to
Mankato, Minn., and then to the
St. Paul area, where she worked
for SPARC (Saint Paul
Association of Retarded
Citizens) before moving to
Hampton in 1969.
While in Hampton, she worked for
the family real estate and
insurance business until 1987,
when she began working for the
Iowa Department of Revenue. She
retired from the state in 1999.
She was a member of Trinity
Lutheran Church in Hampton.
Diann had many interests
including genealogy, playing
bridge and collecting antiques.
However, collecting antique
glassware was her true passion.
She is survived by her sons,
James William, of Fishers, Ind.,
Jonathan Ivor and his wife,
Janet, of Lincoln, Neb., and
Michael Foss and his wife,
Brenda, of Ankeny; sisters,
Cheryl Donahoo and her husband,
William, of Mason City, and

Maurice was born Oct. 11, 1913,
in Little Cedar, Iowa, the son
of Henry and Agnes (Mitchell)
Milton. He grew up on a farm
west of Little Cedar, Iowa,
where he enjoyed many fond
memories with his siblings.
After graduating from Little
Cedar Consolidated High School,
he worked for Standard Oil
before being drafted into the
Army in 1941.
Upon completion of boot camp, he
married Teresa Brattrud in
Rolla, Mo. He served in the Army
Corps of Engineers in Alaska,
helping to build the Alcan
Highway and in the Aluetion
Islands.
After returning home from the
Army, he worked as an oil
distributor in Jesup, Iowa, for
five years before moving to
Marble Rock in 1951, where he
worked for Oliver Tractor in
Charles City for eight years. He
then moved to the Manly area
where he farmed until 1964, then
moved to Mason City to work for
the Globe Gazette newspaper
until his retirement.
After retirement, Maurice worked
his summers at the I-35 Rest
Area Information Center.
Maurice was a member of Grace
United Methodist Church, Moose
Lodge, and the River City
Squares and Balance and Swing
Square Dance Club.
Maurice is survived by his
daughter, Janice and husband,
Dale Clapper, of Clear Lake;
granddaughter, Denise and
husband, Jeff Powers, of Indian
Mound, Tenn.; grandsons, David
Clapper and wife, Christine, and
Chad Clapper and wife, Angela,

Martha "Mert" (Marken) Seeley
was born in Bridgewater, S.D.,
on May 31, 1915, the daughter of
George and Anna (Meirose)
Marken. Martha was baptized and
confirmed at the Presbyterian
church in Bridgewater. She was a
1933 graduate of the Bridgewater
High School. She moved from
South Dakota to Iowa at the age
of 19.
She was married to George Seeley
on April 3, 1937, in Salem, S.D.
Martha and George worked for
George's father at the family
garage in Plymouth, and later
they took over the family
business until 1996. Martha and
George lived in Plymouth all
their lives, except for a year
they lived in California.
Martha and George took many
trips over the years, which
included Bermuda, Spain,
Acapulco, the Dominican
Republic, Canada, and many
states in the U.S. Martha's
favorite hobby was shopping; she
especially enjoyed shopping at
Younkers. She also enjoyed
taking night classes in Mason
City and swimming lessons.
She was a member of Plymouth
United Methodist Church.
Martha is survived by her two
children, Gerold Seeley, San
Francisco, Calif., and Dale
Seeley, Garland, Texas; two
sisters-in-law, Nellie Lunde,
Mason City, and Helen Marken,
Mitchell, S.D. Martha is also
survived by several nieces and

Jan. 9, 2005, in Fort Wayne
after which "Fran" was laid to
rest in Greenlawn Memorial Park
following her wishes.
Fran had relocated to Fort Wayne
several years earlier and
married Mr. Lloyd Hanna, of Fort
Wayne, Ind.
Fran was born on Feb. 9, 1915,
in Minneapolis, Minn., to Mr.
and Mrs. C. K. Kinney. She
graduated from Mason City High
School in 1933.
She attended California School
of Design and Interior
Decorating in Pasadena, Calif.,
and married Alfred H. Kellum on
Oct. 23, 1937.
In 1945, the couple opened the
well-known Kellum Interiors in
Mason City, Iowa. They owned and
operated this successful
business for many decades in
Mason City.
Fran was a member of First
United Methodist Church.
Fran was preceded in death by
her parents; her first husband,
Alfred H. Kellum; a nephew, Jon
Micheal Bocock; and niece,
Francine Pringle Wolcott.
Fran will be dearly missed by
her family and friends.

Tom married Lois Gillerman Aug.
24, 1963, in Rock Creek Lutheran
Church, rural Osage. They moved
to Minneapolis where he worked
as a welder. They moved back to
Clear Lake in 1972. Here he
worked for Iowa Mold and
Tooling, the Clear Lake Bakery,
Fieldstone Cabinetry and later
drove Winnebago Motor Homes and
worked for G.R.P. & Associates.
He did custodial work at Econo
Foods.
Tom loved listening to country
and polka music. He was a
founding member of the Muddy
Pond CB Club. His handle was
"Broomstick." Tom was also a
former member of the Moose
Lodge.
Tom is survived by his wife,
Lois Lehmann, Clear Lake; son,
Jay Lehmann, Clear Lake;
daughter, LaDonna Hansen and her
husband, Terry, Clear Lake;
grandchildren, Gary and Devin

Dorothy Marie Michaelson was
born in New Ulm, Minn., on April
20, 1915, the daughter of Eugene
and Elsie (Werdan) Nelson.
As a young child, she moved with
her family to Forest City, Iowa.
There she grew up and attended
school, graduating from Forest
City High School.
She continued her education and
received her nursing degree. She
worked in hospitals in Belmond
and Iowa City.
On Sept. 23, 1945, she married
Reuben Michaelson. The couple
made their home in Forest City
where Dorothy cared for her home
and family and raised their
daughter.
She was an active member of
Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Forest City.
In 1994, she moved to Olathe,
Kan., to be closer to her
family. Failing health forced
her to enter Olathe Good
Samaritan Center in Olathe,
Kan., where she spent her last
years comfortably with the best
of care.
Dorothy loved to crochet and do
needlepoint. Her artistic
sensibilities led her to do some
oil painting and she held a deep
appreciation for rocks and
minerals and was an avid gem
collector. She loved to garden
and always enjoyed an
enthusiastic game of bingo with
her friends.
Dorothy is survived by her
daughter, Toni Ochs, of Olathe,
Kan.; and two granddaughters,
Annie and Kelly Ochs, both of
Olathe.
Dorothy is preceded in death by
her parents; her husband,
Reuben; two sisters, Dolores
Nelson and Ramona Rensink; and a

Bruggeman, 60, of Lyle, Minn.,
died Sunday (Jan. 9, 2005) at
his home in Lyle, Minn.
He was born Feb. 16, 1944, in
Osage, Iowa, to August and
Phyllis (Adams) Bruggeman. Larry
was baptized and confirmed at
St. Peters in Toeterville.
Larry farmed on the family farm
in the St. Ansgar area for most
of his life. He eventually moved
to the Lyle area, where he
helped several of the area
farmers.

Catherine (Cathy) Mary Delzer
was born in Mitchell, S.D., on
May 4, 1948, the daughter of

She received her education in
Mitchell and graduated from
Notre Dame High School in 1966.
She continued her education at
Springfield State College and
later worked in the office at
General Motors Equipment in
Mitchell.
On May 23, 1970, she married
Darryl Delzer. The family moved
to Forest City in 1972 when
Darryl began working at
Winnebago. Cathy worked for a
couple of years at Bill's Red
Owl.
She was a member of St. James
Catholic Church and an active
"prayer chain" partner. She was
a dedicated Elvis fan and
enjoyed camping trips and
finding a bargain at a garage
sale. But her most treasured
times were spent with her
children and grandchildren.
Cathy is survived by her
husband, Darryl Delzer of Forest
City; her parents, Orville and
Mary Marks of Mitchell, S.D.;
and her children, Monica Solberg
and husband, Darwin, of Forest
City, Melissa Delzer and fiance,
Shawn Plymesser, of Lake Mills,

moved to Mason City and were
members of Holy Family Catholic
Church.
Jeanette was a vivacious
cheerleader and homecoming queen
for the 1953 class of Holy
Family Catholic School. She
married her high school
sweetheart, Gerald E. Herbener,
and five children were born of
this union.
She traveled with her husband,
who was in the United States Air
Force, to various locations
including Alaska. In 1959, she
encouraged her husband to go
work for a new company forming
in Des Plaines, Ill., the
McDonald's Corp. This led them
to owning their own McDonald's
in Southern California, where
she spent much of her time.
She was a joyful woman who
touched all who came in contact
with her. She could laugh with a
teenager or play cards with the
seniors. She loved Jesus and it
showed in the way she lived her
life and conducted her affairs.
She was a cherished member of
Praise Community Church in Mason
City.
She loved her family most and
was glad to be an encourager to
all around her. She loved to
play cards, garden, sing in
church, travel, and try new
things like snow skiing and jet
skiing. But mostly she loved to
laugh and have fun. She
especially enjoyed her Rudd
acreage which she liked to call
Lone Pine Farm. The world will
be a less brighter place without
her.
She is preceded in death by her
parents; and son, Gerald Russell
Herbener.
She is survived by her sisters,
Sandra Turnbull of Frisco,
Texas, Sheila Pond of Henderson,
Nev., and Linda Fouste of Mason
City.
She also is survived by her
children, Kathleen Esser and
Kimberly West, of Mason City,
Iowa, Karen Herbener, of Long
Beach, Calif., Kelly Nelson (and
her husband, Jim Nelson) of
Phoenix, Ariz.; her
grandchildren, Justin and Jeff
Esser, Nicolas, Corey, and
Clifton Nelson, and her
great-great grandchildren Hannah
and Celia Esser (known to them
as Nana Bananga.)

Edna Pearl (Hines) Miller was
born on July 3, 1925, in
Borgess, Ill., the daughter of
Edward and Lena Pearl (Lee)
Hines. She graduated from Joy
High School, in Joy, Ill. After
high school, Edna lived in
Alaska and Oklahoma.
Edna then moved to Illinois and
worked at Jenkins Truckline in
Moline, Ill., as a secretary.
While working at Jenkins
Truckline, her son, John,
introduced her to her future
husband, Harold.
On Dec. 14, 1957, Edna married
Harold Miller in Lamont, Iowa.
Later in life, Edna worked at
Diamond Transportation, Sears,
and sold Tupperware, where she
earned the nickname the
"Tupperware Lady".
She enjoyed spending time with
her family, crocheting,
traveling, going out to eat with
Harold, and making her famous
baked beans.
She was a member of Rudd United
Methodist Church in Rudd.

Ma Bell. She was then employed
by the U.S. Navy and the U.S.
Army as a civilian and worked
for Ogilvy Bakery.
She lived in Washington DC,
North Carolina and Germany. She
stayed home to care for her two
daughters.
Martha also worked for Alco
Discount Store until 1981.
Her most recent employment was
at Job Service, helping older
adults obtain employment. She
retired in 1987.
She was a member of First United
Methodist Church and enjoyed
traveling, music and working
puzzle books.

Minn., schools and graduated
from N.E.G.H. High School in
1995 in New Richland, Minn.
Eric enjoyed his family and the
large family gatherings.
His interests were cooking and
photography. Eric planned on
going to college for
horticulture in the fall.

Claire Russell Adams was born
Feb. 21, 1933, in Aureola, Union
Township, Floyd County, a son of
Clarence Clifford and Marie
Catherine (Bohl) Adams; and died
Wednesday (Jan. 12, 2005) at
Floyd County Memorial Hospital
after suffering a heart attack
at his home.
He received his education in
Marble Rock public schools,
graduating in 1950. Red was
instrumental in helping the
Marble Rockets advance to the
1950 state sub finals. He
lettered in baseball in high
school and college.
He attended Upper Iowa at
Fayette and Northeast Missouri
State Teachers College in
Kirksville, where he received
his B.A. in 1958 and his M.A. in
1963. He later earned his sixth
year specialist degree in 1976.
On Feb. 10, 1953, he was
inducted into the United States
Army, where he served with the
service battery, 246th field
artillery, as a cook. He was
honorably discharged on Feb. 9,
1955.
Following his discharge, he
worked for Decker and Sons meat
packing plant in Mason City. He
taught schools in Shelbyville,
Mo., Cylinder, and Riceville. He
served as principal of schools
at Dows (1976-1979),
superintendent and elementary
principal at Thompson
(1979-1996), superintendent at
Lakota (1990-1992) and
superintendent at Buffalo Center
(1996-1997).
He was united in marriage to
Mary Louise Cleveland on Sept.
7, 1956, at the Little Brown
Church at Nashua. To this union
were born six children.
Red's interests included
fishing, hunting and bowling.
His greatest joy was spending
time with his grandchildren. He
loved to tease them terribly,
and was always willing to take
them to ball games.
He was a life member of the Iowa
State Education Association and
the National Education
Association. He was a member of
American Legion Post No. 409 of
Crystal Lake and a member of the
Loyal Order of the Moose No.
1328 in Mason City.
Living family members include
his loving wife of 48 years,
Mary, of Charles City; two
daughters, Shari Lynn (Greg)
Knopf of Clear Lake, and Saundra
Lou (Chad) Gifford of Burt; four
sons, Steven (Brenda) Adams of
Palatine, Ill., Stanton Adams of
Thompson, Shawn (Peggy) Adams
and Scott Adams all of Des
Moines; 10 grandchildren; one
sister, Fern Chambers, of Mason
City. Also surviving include

John Junior Liska, the son of
John Anton and Mary Eleanore
(Chizek) Liska, was born April
29, 1923, on a farm north of
Duncan. He attended Hayfield
Consolidated School.
On Jan. 23, 1946, he married
Agnes Brcka at St. Wenceslaus
Catholic Church. They lived in
Duncan, where John was employed
at the Brcka General Store.
They later moved to a farm near
Crystal Lake, where he farmed
and did custom work in the area.
In 1967, they moved to their
home in Hayfield. John also had
a trucking business, which he
operated until 1984.
He enjoyed his family, fishing,
gardening, playing cards, old
time music and dancing.
He was a member of St.
Wenceslaus Catholic Church.
John is survived by his wife,
Agnes, of Hayfield; seven

Wencil Dean Small
REMBRANDT —Wencil Dean Small
passed from this earth on
Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2005). Wencil
was critically injured in a farm
accident on Tuesday, Jan. 4,
2005, and died as a result of
those injuries. While death took
him too soon, it fittingly came
while he was pursuing his
lifelong passion.
Wencil Dean Small was born to
Charles and Blanche (Zupp) Small
on May 22, 1923, at Washta,
Iowa. He graduated from Washta
High School and began his
farming career following
graduation. He farmed with his
father until his marriage to
Roberta Hegstrom of Lawton,
Iowa, on May 29, 1947.
The couple spent their first
three years farming near Lawton,
Iowa. They moved to the
Rembrandt area in 1950, and have
lived there to present. They
raised four children in their
home south of Rembrandt: Marcia,
Larry, Karen and Gary.
Wencil was an active member of
Rembrandt United Methodist
Church.
For much of his life he raised
assorted livestock: cattle,
hogs, chickens, ducks, lambs and
even Shetland ponies. He scaled
back to just grain farming later
in life.
The free time allowed him and
Roberta to travel, including
visiting longtime friends,
George and Helen Thompson in
Arizona, and traveling to
Europe.
Wencil and George made annual
fishing trips up north for many
years. Wencil bled International
Harvester Red, owning a series
of IH and CaseIH tractors. He
was a Scott Township Trustee at
the time of his death.
He enjoyed the company of his
rat terrier, Skeeter.
He was involved in the area wind
farm operated by Waverly Power
and Light, with two windmills on
his land.
Wencil is survived by his wife,
Roberta; sister and
brother-in-law, Joyce and John
Dumkreiger; children, Marcia and
husband, Doug Grabinski, of
Clear Lake, Larry Small and
special friend, Bonnie Hamilton,
of Clear Lake, Karen and
husband, Ben Greene of Webb, and
Gary and Julie Small, of
Rembrandt; grandchildren: Brent

Horn
ANKENY — Marilyn Van Horn, 75,
passed away on Wednesday (Jan.
12, 2005) at Mercy Hospice in
Johnston.

S. Main St. Burial will be at
Riverside Cemetery in Charles
City
Visitation and a prayer service
were held on Friday in Ankeny
and will resume one hour prior
to the services today.
Marilyn was born on Jan. 7,
1930, in Waverly to Edwin and
Clara Kohagen. She married Lloyd
Van Horn in 1948 at the Little
Brown Church in the Vale in
Nashua. They lived in Charles
City where they raised their
family. Her family and friends
were her treasure, and she
believed she was a richly
blessed woman.
Marilyn moved to Ankeny in 1994,
where she worked at East
Elementary in food service, and
built a life centered around her
friends and family. It was at
East Elementary where she found
yet another treasure in the
staff and students that she grew
to love, and who in turn loved
her deeply.
Marilyn joyfully spent most of
her time with her family, but
she also enjoyed watching sports
— most passionately the
Hawkeyes, the Cubs, and the
Vikings. Marilyn sewed
beautifully and volunteered her
time by making clothes for Floyd
County Breast Cancer Bears,
clothing more than 100 bears for
giving to cancer survivors.
She is survived by her son, Doug
(Jan) Van Horn of Blue Mounds,
Wis., and their children, Teresa
and Jason (Liz); daughter,
Cheryl (Rod) Spieker of Ankeny,
and their children, Michael
(Julie) and Michelle; son, Brad
(Tammy) of Minneapolis, and
their children, Steve (Jamie),
Angie (Doug) Croll and Sara;
daughter, Andi (Brian) Donaghy
of Ankeny, and their children,
Christi, Molly, and Amy; and a
sister, Ardath Kreimeyer.
Marilyn was also the proud
great-grandmother of Aibree
Vanessa Spieker, daughter of
Mike and Julie, and Carter
Bradley Van Horn, son of Steve
and Jamie.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Lloyd; and
granddaughter, Vanessa Spieker.
The family wishes to express
their deep gratitude for the
exceptional care and love given
to Marilyn by the Mercy Hospice
staff and volunteers.

Jack was born Jan. 16, 1928, the
son of John W. "Jack"and Vera
(Graves) Bantz in Independence.
He graduated from Independence
High School in 1946. Jack
volunteered in the United States
Army and served one year in
Japan, upon his honorable
discharge from the Army, Jack
attended Upper Iowa University.
He was employed by Wapsie Feed
Co. for two years, followed by
28 years with Standard Oil Co.
as a sales manager.
Jack married Joan I. Hamilton,
his school sweetheart and the
love of his life on June 19,
1949. He was a member of First
Presbyterian Church and served
as a church elder.
Those left to cherish his memory
are his wife of 55 years, Joan
Bantz; daughter, Becky Hirst and
husband, Ken, of Middleville,
Mich.; son, Jeff Bantz and wife,
Jo, of Mason City;
granddaughters, Lyndsee Bantz of
Cordova, Tenn., and Jaime Bantz
of Mason City; a grandson, Chad

Sherman A. Ekeland was born
April 15, 1922, in Kelly, Iowa,
to Hans and Karina (Westvold)
Ekeland. He was baptized in
Kelly Lutheran Church and
confirmed at Palestine Lutheran
Church in Huxley. He graduated
from Kelly High School. In 1941,
the family moved to a farm north
of Clarion.
On Aug. 20, 1966 he married
Gladys Anderson Johnson. He was
a member of St. Olaf Lutheran
Church, where he served as a
trustee and usher for many
years.
Sherman continued to farm until
his health began to decline.
Sherman enjoyed the simple life;
being outdoors, farming and
raising livestock, but most of
all spending time with his
family and friends. He was a
very kind and generous man who
will be deeply missed by all who
knew him. Because of Parkinson's
Disease, Sherman resided for the
last four years at Belmond
Health Care Home.
He is survived by his wife,
Gladys; two stepsons, Edwin
Johnson of Belmond and Alfred
Johnson and his wife, Donna, of
Kanawha; five grandchildren:
Laurie Mathahs and husband,
Jeff, of Garner, Lisa Sweet and
her husband, Matt, of Cedar
Rapids, Brent Johnson and his

LUVERNE — Lucille Smith, 87,

at her home in LuVerne.

Lucille was born on Dec. 13,
1917, near LuVerne, to John W.
and Emma (Petersen) Kubly.
Lucille attended LuVerne
Consolidated Schools and was
married to Lester E. Smith on
Dec. 14, 1934, in Fort Dodge.
Lester and Lucille farmed and
lived all their married life in
the LuVerne and Renwick area.
The couple moved into LuVerne in
1962. Lester died on Feb. 3,
1987.
Lucille worked part time at
LuVerne Public Library and took
great pride in caring for her
lawn and flowers. She enjoyed
quilting, playing cards, feeding
and watching the birds, going
for walks and visiting with her
friends in LuVerne. Lucille was
well-known for her lemon pies
and rolls. She was a great fan
of the Iowa Hawkeyes and enjoyed
watching them play. She enjoyed
babysitting, but her real joy
was her grandchildren.
She belonged to United Methodist
Church in LuVerne as well as the
Senior Citizens and Garden Club.
Survivors include her son,
Kenneth Smith and wife, Carol,
of Clear Lake; a daughter,
Sharon Ites, and her husband,
Gary, of Gravois Mills, Mo. Also
surviving are 13 grandchildren;
22 great- grandchildren; and one
great- great-granddaughter.
Lucille was preceded in death by
her parents; her husband,
Lester; a son, Gerald in 1980; a
sister, Wilma Ruberg; and a
brother, Melvin Kubly.
