Wencil Dean Small

REMBRANDT —Wencil Dean Small passed from this earth on Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2005). Wencil was critically injured in a farm accident on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, and died as a result of those injuries. While death took him too soon, it fittingly came while he was pursuing his lifelong passion.

Wencil Dean Small was born to Charles and Blanche (Zupp) Small on May 22, 1923, at Washta, Iowa. He graduated from Washta High School and began his farming career following graduation. He farmed with his father until his marriage to Roberta Hegstrom of Lawton, Iowa, on May 29, 1947.

The couple spent their first three years farming near Lawton, Iowa. They moved to the Rembrandt area in 1950, and have lived there to present. They raised four children in their home south of Rembrandt: Marcia, Larry, Karen and Gary.

Wencil was an active member of Rembrandt United Methodist Church.

For much of his life he raised assorted livestock: cattle, hogs, chickens, ducks, lambs and even Shetland ponies. He scaled back to just grain farming later in life.

The free time allowed him and Roberta to travel, including visiting longtime friends, George and Helen Thompson in Arizona, and traveling to Europe.

Wencil and George made annual fishing trips up north for many years. Wencil bled International Harvester Red, owning a series of IH and CaseIH tractors. He was a Scott Township Trustee at the time of his death.

He enjoyed the company of his rat terrier, Skeeter.

He was involved in the area wind farm operated by Waverly Power and Light, with two windmills on his land.

Wencil is survived by his wife, Roberta; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and John Dumkreiger; children, Marcia and husband, Doug Grabinski, of Clear Lake, Larry Small and special friend, Bonnie Hamilton, of Clear Lake, Karen and husband, Ben Greene of Webb, and Gary and Julie Small, of Rembrandt; grandchildren: Brent Grabinski of Mason City, Elissa (Grabinski) and Doyce Hanson of Rock Valley, Jeff Grabinski of McKinleyville, Calif., Charles and Heidi Small, of Rembrandt, Amy (Greene) and Craig Williams of Columbus, Neb., Brittanya Small of Rembrandt, Beth (Greene) and Scott Knudtson, of Webb, Justin Small, of Ames, Tiara Small, of Rembrandt, and Bradley Greene, of Webb; and 10 great-grandchildren: Taylor, Isaac and Abigail Hanson, of Rock Valley; Allison, Rylie and Cole Knudtson, of Webb, Greta, Glenn and Graham Small, of Rembrandt, and Alyvia Williams, of Columbus, Neb.
