Arthur Lenning
VALLEJO, CALIF. — Arthur Laurence
Lenning, passed away on Tuesday (Feb.
15, 2005), in Vallejo, California, at 81
years of age after a long illness.
Art was born in Clear Lake, Iowa, on
June 14, 1923 (Flag Day), and said that
"the flags were flying for him!"
He was the youngest of twelve children
born to Norwegian parents who immigrated
to the Midwest to farm.
His mother, Elizabeth Kittleson's
parents immigrated from Oslo, Norway,
while his father, Knute Lenning was
naturalized as a proud American in 1906.
He was the dearly beloved husband of
Marjorie Lucille who he married on June
5, 1948, and the proud father of five
children, Diane Kay, Susan Marie, Bruce
Allen, Julie Ann (predeceased), and
Charles Dennis.
Art and Marge began their married life
in Clear Lake, Iowa, where Art worked at
the Great Lakes Pipeline for more than
ten years before he began his life-long
career of home construction.
They have lived in the American Canyon,
Calif.-area of the Napa Valley, for 41
years.
He loved his wife of 56 years with
uncommon devotion, and they rarely spent
any time away from each other.
Art was one of the "greatest generation"
members who served his country proudly
in the Navy during World War II. He was
a chief petty 0fficer aboard the USS
Washington serving in the Pacific
between 1942 and 1945. After his
honorable discharge, he returned home to
Clear Lake and obtained his private
pilot's license through the G.I. Bill.

of his children and most of his
grandchildren the intricacies of
fishing. He loved to play the accordion,
especially the "Beer Barrel Polka." He
taught his daughters how to jitterbug
dance, and the boys how to build a
house.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge for
more than 25 years. An avid sports
enthusiast, Art believed every year that
the Oakland A's and the San Francisco
49ers were going to win every game and
go to the championship final game!
Art is survived by his wife, Marjorie
Lucille, of American Canyon; his
daughters: Diane Kay Ives of Seattle,
Wash., and Susan Marie Winslow of
Montgomery, Texas; his sons: Bruce Allen
Lenning of Napa, Calif., and Charles
