DUMONT — Kathryn Evans, 96, of Dumont, died Friday (Feb. 18, 2005) at the Rockwell Care Center in Rockwell of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont with the Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Burial will be at the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, 902 West Broadway in Dumont.

Kathryn was born Aug. 17, 1908, in rural Dumont, the daughter of Frederick and Jennie (Ubben) Miller. She graduated from Dumont High School in 1927. On Oct. 18, 1929, she married Donald Evans in Owatonna, Minn.

Kathryn was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, flowers and spending time with her family. She was in the Gold Star Mother's Club and active in the New Hope United Methodist Church where she was a member.

Kathryn is survived by her daughter, Dawn, and husband, Wendell Thomas, of Rockwell; a grandson, James, and wife, Melia Thomas, of Rockwell; grandaughters: Janette, and husband, Doug Lee, of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Jennifer Thomas of San Diego, Calif.; great grandchildren: Cody and Sierra Thomas of Rockwell, and Madison and Joshua Lee of Sioux Falls, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald; son, Donald Duane; five brothers, and six sisters.

MASON CITY — Lynn F. Gibson, 56, of Mason City, died Friday (Feb. 18, 2005) at his home.

No visitation or service is planned at this time in Mason City, however, a memorial service may be planned for a later date in Fort Dodge.

Cremation has taken place at Cremation Services of North Iowa, 123 Second Street S.E. in Mason City.

DUMONT — Henrietta Knavel Krull, 93, of Dumont died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2005) at the Dumont Care Center in Dumont.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont with the Rev. Bob Scholten officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

GOODELL — Wayne A. Stille, 69, of Goodell died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2005) at the Belmond Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Goodell United Methodist Church in Goodell with Pastor Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will take place at the Amsterdam Cemetery east of Goodell.

Marcella Johnson


BRITT — Marcella Johnson, 90, of Britt died Saturday (Feb. 19, 2005) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Britt with the Rev. Robert Dodge and the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Marcella Margaret Eva Johnson, the daughter of John H. and Amelia Rose (Fennewald) Mulert, was born July 22, 1914, in Dubuque. She attended the rural schools of Kossuth and Hancock County. On Nov. 29, 1934, she was married to Clyde W. Johnson at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. They farmed in the Britt and Crystal Lake area until 1963. They moved into Britt in the early 1970s where Marcella was employed at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital from 1976 to 1983. In December of 1998, she moved to the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City due to ill health.

She enjoyed her family, gardening, crocheting, fishing, playing cards, cooking, going on family vacations and dancing at the Surf Ballroom.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Britt, UMW, Rebekah Lodge and the Britt Senior Citizens. 

Marcella is survived by her six children: Richard (Dianne) Johnson of Fort Dodge, Clyde Johnson of Clear Lake, Rose (Neal) Santee of Mason City, Donna (Larry) Cline of Mason City, Shirley (Ron) Ostendorf of Clear Lake, and James (Carolyn) Johnson of Des Moines; 20 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; a foster great grandchild; ten great great grandchildren; two sisters: June (Leo) Kammerer of Cedar Rapids and Rita Berndt of Moline, Ill.; a brother-in-law, Gilbert Johnson of Mason City; and two sisters-in-law: Ida Mulert of Dubuque and Rita Mulert of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde, Nov. 10, 1975; her parents; grandchildren: Steven Cline, Richard Johnson, and Debra Sue Johnson; a great grandson, Jeremy Johnson; two brothers: Harold and Kenneth Mulert; and three sisters: Margaret Mulert, Dorothy Johnson and Vivian McGrath.

BLUE EARTH, MINN. — The Rev. David Q. Hawbaker, 94, of Blue Earth, formerly of Elmore, Minn. and Lake Mills, Iowa, died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2005) at his home in Blue Earth.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m on Tuesday at Shiloh Lutheran Church in Elmore, Minn. with Pastor Arlon Lee of River of Life Worship Center in Blue Earth and Pastors John and Nancy Alexander of New Hope Tabernacle in Lake Mills officiating. Burial will take place in Riverview Cemetery in Elmore, Minn.

Visitation will be today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Winter Funeral Home, 105 South Grove Street in Blue Earth and will continure one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to missions at Shiloh Lutheran Church in Elmore, River of Life Worship Center in Blue Earth, or to New Hope Tabernacle in Lake Mills.

Arthur Lenning


VALLEJO, CALIF. — Arthur Laurence Lenning, passed away on Tuesday (Feb. 15, 2005), in Vallejo, California, at 81 years of age after a long illness.

Art was born in Clear Lake, Iowa, on June 14, 1923 (Flag Day), and said that "the flags were flying for him!"

He was the youngest of twelve children born to Norwegian parents who immigrated to the Midwest to farm.

His mother, Elizabeth Kittleson's parents immigrated from Oslo, Norway, while his father, Knute Lenning was naturalized as a proud American in 1906.

He was the dearly beloved husband of Marjorie Lucille who he married on June 5, 1948, and the proud father of five children, Diane Kay, Susan Marie, Bruce Allen, Julie Ann (predeceased), and Charles Dennis.

Art and Marge began their married life in Clear Lake, Iowa, where Art worked at the Great Lakes Pipeline for more than ten years before he began his life-long career of home construction.

They have lived in the American Canyon, Calif.-area of the Napa Valley, for 41 years.

He loved his wife of 56 years with uncommon devotion, and they rarely spent any time away from each other.

Art was one of the "greatest generation" members who served his country proudly in the Navy during World War II. He was a chief petty 0fficer aboard the USS Washington serving in the Pacific between 1942 and 1945. After his honorable discharge, he returned home to Clear Lake and obtained his private pilot's license through the G.I. Bill.

He was an avid fisherman who taught all of his children and most of his grandchildren the intricacies of fishing. He loved to play the accordion, especially the "Beer Barrel Polka." He taught his daughters how to jitterbug dance, and the boys how to build a house.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge for more than 25 years. An avid sports enthusiast, Art believed every year that the Oakland A's and the San Francisco 49ers were going to win every game and go to the championship final game!

Art is survived by his wife, Marjorie Lucille, of American Canyon; his daughters: Diane Kay Ives of Seattle, Wash., and Susan Marie Winslow of Montgomery, Texas; his sons: Bruce Allen Lenning of Napa, Calif., and Charles Dennis Lenning also of Napa, Calif.; His grandchildren include Jamie Stefani, Jessie Ives, and Shauna Ives all from the Seattle area; Gabe Winslow and Matt Winslow from the Montgomery, Texas, area; Curt Brandt, Troy Lenning, Allison Lenning, and Jake Lenning of Napa, Calif.; and Ciera Lenning of Napa, Calif. Art's great-grandchildren include Anna and Grace Stefani, Jasmine Sites, and Avry Brandt. His sister, Minnie Findlay, still resides in Mason City, Iowa. In addition, he has numerous nieces and nephews who sill reside in the greater Clear Lake, Iowa, area with their families.

A memorial service was held at the Napa Valley Evangelical Free Church on 1050 Hagen Road, Napa, Calif., this past Saturday (Feb. 19, 2005) at 10:30 am.

TITONKA — Leonard N. Anderson, 86, of Titonka, formerly of Rake, died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2005) at the Titonka Care Center in Titonka.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake, with Pastor Paul Haugen officiating. Burial will take place at West Cemetery in Rake.

STANLEY — Linda J. Kime, 56, of Stanley, Iowa, died Sunday afternoon, (Feb. 20, 2005) at the home of her daughter in Hazleton, Iowa, after a long illness.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Zion Lutheran Church, Oelwein, with the Rev. Leo Combs-Lay officiating.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, and for one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Volga, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the Heart of Iowa Hospice.

Survivors include: a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Annette Kime, and grandchildren, Robin, Justin, and Raegan, all of Waucoma; daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Ryan Cummings, and grandchildren, Paige and Olivia, all of Hazleton; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Andrea Kime and grandchildren, Scott and Makaela, all of Rudd; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Jessica Kime, of Tipton; two sisters, Audrey Leach, of Manchester, and Sue (Robert) Fowlkes, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; special friend, John Beier, of Stanley, Iowa; her Kime extended family, and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her uncle and aunt, Wayne and Janet Hummel.

Linda Jean White was born on Aug. 20, 1948, at rural Volga, Iowa, the daughter of Wayne J. and Edna (Hummel) White. She graduated from Starmont High School at Arlington in 1966 and attended Northeast Iowa Community College at Calmar.

Linda married Dave Kime in October of 1969 and four children were born to this union. They farmed together at various farms in northeast Iowa. Linda helped with milking the cows, feeding the hogs and planting and harvesting the crops to provide for her family. She also provided for her family by growing and canning vegetables and by all the family meals that she enjoyed making for them.

Linda also showed her love and dedication to her family by always having a full-time job off of the farm. Linda and Dave later divorced. Linda then worked at the Oelwein Daily Register, at Michels Trucking in Hazleton, as a bookkeeper, and then was the receptionist at the Northeast Iowa Mental Health Center in Oelwein.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Linda spent most of her free time with her children, grandchildren and her special friend, John. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Richard ‘Dick' Jackson

MARION — Richard "Dick" Jackson, 60, of 4405 Merganser Court, died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2005) at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a long illness.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, with the Rev. Gabriel Anderson officiating.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial will be at a later date in Mason City.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia J. Jackson; three children, Becky (Ken) Latuska, of Rochester, Minn.; Brian Jackson, of Marion, and Beth (Mike) Weber, of Roland, Iowa; a brother, Larry (Patricia D.) Jackson, of Northville, Mich., and two grandchildren, Ryan and Matthew Latuska.

Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Maureen Berding, of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Linda (George) Papouchis, of Mason City, and his nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Jackson, Susan Jackson, Joe Jackson and Jess (Stephanie) Berding-Wheat.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dick was born Jan. 25, 1945, the son of Wilbur G. and Mildred A. (Starr) Jackson, in Iowa City. On Oct. 19, 1963, he married Patricia Berding at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City. Dick was a computer programmer. He was a hard worker who enjoyed spending time with his family, his dog, B.J., and traveling to Michigan to visit his brother. He collected toy tractors and enjoyed yard work.

A memorial fund has been established in Dick's memory.

Harold ‘Tiny' R. Tims


MASON CITY — Harold "Tiny" R. Tims, 89, of 1030 First St. N.E., died Friday (Feb. 18, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Upon his wishes the body will be cremated and there will be no visitation. A private inurnment will take place in Elmwood-St. Joseph's Cemetery, Mason City.

Harold was born Sept. 9, 1915, in Mason City, Iowa the son of Fredrick and Catherine Mary (Johnson) Tims. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1936. Harold married Barbara Jean Thompson on Aug. 19, 1951, in Mason City. He worked for the Globe Gazette newspaper for more than forty years until retiring. Harold was a devoted husband, good neighbor and friend.

Harold's wife, Barbara, an infant son, parents, six brothers, and one sister preceded him in death.

GOODELL — Wayne Allen Stille, 69, of Goodell, died Saturday, (Feb. 19, 2005) at the Belmond Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Goodell United Methodist Church with Pastor Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Cemetery, east of Goodell.

Wayne Allen Stille, the son of George and Ina Berghefer Stille, was born April 18, 1935, on the family farm near Klemme. The family moved to Goodell in 1943 and moved to a farm east of Goodell in 1947. Wayne attended Country School No. 8, west of Klemme, and graduated from Goodell High School in 1953. Wayne was a proud member of the Goodell High School baseball team. While in high school he worked in the hardware store in Goodell.

On Sept. 3, 1955, he married Gloria Burrs at the EUB Church in Goodell. To this union four sons were born: Gene, Mark, Steve (Beaver) and Tom.

Wayne worked for Klemme and Garner Creameries as a milk hauler, managed the chicken house east of Goodell for four years, then returned to hauling milk for AMPI and worked for several area farmers throughout his life.

Wayne was a devoted and working member of the Goodell United Methodist Church. Because of his dedication, the kitchen was remodeled and many repairs were made.

Wayne also served on the Goodell City Council since 1987, was a member of the city water department and enjoyed being a scout leader. He loved tractors — mainly John Deere, gardening and competing with a neighbor to see who could get the first ripe tomato, woodworking and other crafts, finding treasures from the junkyard and his grand-dogs.

Wayne is survived by his wife Gloria; four sons, Gene, Mark and his wife Ginger, Steve (Beaver), and Tom, all of Goodell; adopted daughter, Lisa Laube; two grand-children; mother, Ina of Garner; two sisters, Maxine Dresbach, of Mason City, and Sharyl Stadtlander and husband Marlin, of Garner; two brothers, Kenton and friend Carol, of Poolville, Texas, and Lynn and wife Jan, of Davenport; brother-in-law John Burrs and wife Sue, Corwith; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Wayne was preceded in death by his father, George, brother-in-law Mac Dresbach, and great-nephew, Andy Rasmussen.

Richard E. Munns

MASON CITY — Richard E. Munns, M.D., 87, of Mason City, died Sunday (Feb. 20, 2005) in Kansas City, Kan.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia, with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating.

Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and continue Thursday one hour before services at the church.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church.

Dr. Munns was born in Merriam, Kan., on Dec. 16, 1917. He graduated from Shawnee Mission rural High School, then received his bachelor's degree from Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, in 1938.

He taught school in New Hartford where he met his wife. He married Margaret Gwendolyn Baker on Sept. 12, 1942, to whom he remained happily married until her death on Sept. 23, 1994.

He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater where he achieved the rank of major. Following the war, he attended medical school at the University of Kansas, graduating in 1950.

He opened a family practice in Alden after graduation and practiced there until the spring of 1953. He then practiced family medicine in the Hampton Clinic until 1974 where he had a special interest in obstetrics. He finished his professional career as director of the Family Practice Residency Program at Mercy Hospital in Mason City from 1975 to 1989.

He is survived by four sons, James R. Munns, M.D., and wife, Sharlyn, of Peoria, Ill., Dwight B. Munns and wife, Becky, of Crosby, Minn., Michael Kent Munns of Mason City, Stephen W. Munns, M.D., of Prairie Village, Kan.; grandchildren, Stephanie, Justin, Jeffrey, Timothy, Molly and Alex; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew, Isaac and Michael; former daughters-in-law, Carol Munns and Rachelle Munns.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Gwendolyn Munns; two brothers, Art and Edward, and a sister, Eva.

CORWITH — Mary Ann Perkins, 92, of Corwith, died Monday (Feb. 21, 2005) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Clarion — Marion Anderson, 100, of Clarion, died Tuesday (Feb. 22, 2005) at the Clarion Health Care Center.

SHEFFIELD — James Frederick Atkinson, 85, of Sheffield died Monday (Feb. 21, 2005) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. R. Karl Watkins officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church. There will be a Masonic service at 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Burial will take place in the Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield.

James Frederick Atkinson, the son of Herbert and Julia (Whitney) Atkinson, was born March 15, 1919, at the family farm in Sheffield. He was baptized and confirmed in the First United Methodist Church in Sheffield, where he remained a member his entire life.

Jim grew up on the family farm south of Sheffield with his sisters, Margaret and Elizabeth, and brother Clifford. He graduated from Sheffield High School in 1937. After graduation, he began farming with his father.

On Feb. 12, 1946, he was united in marriage to Roberta Jean Radtke at the Methodist parsonage in Sheffield. They lived on the family farm south of Sheffield, and raised their five children. In 1974, he retired and in 1982 they moved to their present home in Sheffield.

Jim was a member of the Pearl Lodge #426. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He enjoyed golf and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife, Roberta Atkinson, Sheffield; his children, Jean (Karl) Wiley of Wayne, Mich., Pam Schelldorf of Mckinney, Texas, Jim (Deb) Atkinson of Sheffield, Bob (Sheila) Atkinson of Bristow, and Lisa (Kevin) Hoefer of Manchester; one twin sister, Betty Rohn of Mankato, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Julia (Whitney) Atkinson, sister, Margaret Hughes, brother and sister-in-law, Clifford and Phyllis Atkinson, and brother-in-law, Frederick Rohn; two infant grandsons, Andrew James Atkinson and Dylan Anthony Hoefer, and one great-grandson, Nicholas Andrew Atkinson.

Robert Callanan


CLEAR LAKE — Robert Callanan, 84, of 401 W. 10th Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Monday (Feb. 21, 2005) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Derik Yarian officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, with a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m. Interment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Robert Callanan Memorial Fund for the family to give to Hospice of North Iowa, Zion Lutheran Church, the V.F.W. and the Boy Scout Troop 75.

Bob was born Oct. 29, 1920, in Ventura, the son of Everett L. and Florence A. (Avise) Callanan. He attended schools in Ventura and Clear Lake, graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1938 and Hamilton Business College in 1939. Bob married Evelyn M. Kittleson on Oct. 27, 1940, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.

He started working for Interstate Power before entering the Army. Bob enlisted in the United States Army Aug. 13, 1943, and was honorably discharged in 1946. He served in World War II.

Following the service, Bob came back to Clear Lake and went back to work for Interstate Power. He retired in 1982 after working for that company for 43 years.

Bob was active in the Gas & Electric Credit Union for more than 30 years and also league director for three years. He was involved with the Boy Scouts for 38 years and was honored with the district's highest award, the Silver Beaver Award. Bob was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Hamilton Business College.

Bob enjoyed his gardening, raising flowers, watching sports on TV, camping and fishing. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, and the Masonic Benevolence Lodge No. 145 A.F. & A.M., Mason City, and the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Bob is survived by his wife, Evelyn Callanan, Clear Lake; daughter Patricia Knutson and her husband, Dr. Eric, Corvallis, Ore.; two sons, Dennis Callanan and his wife, Vivian, Park Ridge, Ill., and Dr. David Callanan and his wife, Kim, Arlington, Texas; three grandchildren, Kelly Wade, Fresno, Calif., Jay Bergmann and his wife, Christina, Corvallis, Ore., and Patrick Callanan, Arlington, Texas; one great-grandson, Sean Bergmann; and one sister, Leona Currier, Ventura.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Raymond.

Herbert K. Ross

DOWS — Herbert K. Ross, age 85, of Dows, passed away Saturday (Feb. 19, 2005) at Belmond Medical Center.

A memorial service for Herbert Ross will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Dows with Pastor Tony Hershey officiating.

Herbert Karl Ross, the son of Albert and Elsa Ross, was born in Rostock, Germany, on Jan. 25, 1920. As a young child, Herb moved with his family to the United States. The family settled in the Galt area where Herb attended country school. He helped farm in the area until marrying Vivian Welzien on May 29, 1943 in Dows. The couple then moved to Indiana, where Herb worked at Inland Steel for several years.

Herb served his country in World War II and the Korean conflict. He first joined the Army in 1946 and served until 1949. He was recalled in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1951. The couple moved to Dows in 1952 where they owned and operated H&V Cafe until retiring in 1978.

After retirement, Herb managed the Dows Country Club and worked as a painter. He and Vivian enjoyed wintering in Texas and continued doing this until Vivian's passing in 2002. Herb also enjoyed golfing, reading, bowling, gardening and fishing and loved to play cribbage.

Herb was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Dows, where he served as elder. He was very involved in the Dows community. He helped with Dows Corn Days, served on the Dows City Council, was a past president of the Dows Country Club and a member of the American Legion in Dows.

Herb is survived by two daughters, Nancy Lee of Belmond and Sylvia Armour-Greenwood and her husband, Jerry, of Belmond; grandchildren, Stacie Elmore, her husband, Simmie, and their children, Alexa, Dillon, Trae, Zoie and Miko of Belmond, Chad Armour, his wife, Angela, and their children, Tyson and Cole of Belmond, Richard Lee and his children, Daniel, Ricky and Kaytlynn of Belmond, Mark Armour, his wife, Jennifer, and their daughter, Lindsay, of Belmond, Ryan Lee and his wife, Mara, of Des Moines and April Wolter, her husband, Noah, and their daughters, Ashley and Autumn of Belmond; sisters-in-law, Arliss Tangeros of Estherville and De Ross of Des Moines; numerous nieces and nephews and family friend, Gale Wegman, of Belmond.

Naomi Margaret Downs Plath


BELMOND — Naomi Margaret Downs Plath, 89, of Belmond, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 22, 2005) at Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Funeral services for Naomi Plath will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating. Burial will take place at Union Cemetery in St. Paul, Minn.

Visitation will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Naomi, the daughter of Harry and Sara Trent Vye, was born Aug. 28, 1915, in Glendive, Mont. As a young child, Naomi moved to St. Paul, Minn., where she was raised by her Aunt Bertha and Uncle Godfrey Nelson. She graduated from Johnson High School in St. Paul.

Naomi was united in marriage with Grover Downs for 19 years. To this union four children were born, Anita, Tim, Tom and Margaret.

The family relocated to Belmond in 1947, where they owned and operated Downs Texaco Cafe and Service until 1953. Naomi bought the business back in 1957 and ran it until 1966, when the Belmond tornado destroyed the business.

On Nov. 5, 1967, Naomi was united in marriage with Delbert Plath and gained a daughter, Kathy. They were married for 30 years, and during that time they lived in St. Paul, Clarion and Kiester, Minn. Delbert passed away in 1998. Upon his death, Naomi moved to the Belmond Health Care Center until her death.

Naomi loved her family gatherings and seeing all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cards and usually winning, going to the cabin up north to Pelican Lake and eating Hershey's milk chocolate candy bars without sharing.

Naomi is survived by two daughters, Anita Trostem and her husband, Howard, of Kiester, Minn., Margaret Steenblock and her husband, Jerry, of Klemme; one son, Tom Downs and his wife, Mary, of Franklin, Tenn.; step-daughter, Kathy Gabrielson and her husband, Neil, of Britt; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, LaVonne Vye of Las Vegas, Nev.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; aunt, Bertha and uncle, Godfrey Nelson; husbands, Grover and Delbert; and one son, Tim.

MASON CITY — Inez M. Hubbard, 90, Mason City, died Wednesday (Feb. 23, 2005) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302-5th Street S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Michael J. Podhajsky officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

The family of Inez M. Hubbard has requested that memorial contributions    be made to the music department at Newman Catholic High School in her memory.

Inez M. Hubbard was born on Sept. 20, 1914, in Missouri, the daughter of Henry and Gladys (Spath) Klocke. She graduated from Sioux Falls, South Dakota High School.

Inez was united in marriage to Robert Hubbard on Oct. 7, 1939, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. He preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1999.

Inez was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and also worked as a seamstress for The Side Door in Mason City.

She enjoyed sewing, gardening and cooking, but her great love and enjoyment was her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was a long standing member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Timothy Allan Harthan


EMMETSBURG — Timothy Allan Harthan, 49, passed away on Feb. 3, 2005, at his home after a long battle with diabetes.

Tim was born Oct. 19, 1955, to Jack and Lorene (Nicolet) Harthan in Mason City. He was a graduate of Clear Lake High School and received his bachelor of arts degree from Luther College in Decorah in 1978. Tim continued his education at Northwestern Theological Seminary.

He was united in marriage to Cindy Dorr on June 20, 1981, in Marcus, Iowa.

Tim and Cindy owned and operated Charlie's Supper Club in Algona for a few years. In 1990, the couple moved to Emmetsburg where Tim worked for Lakeside Lutheran Home and in 1999 he retired from the Emmetsburg Community Schools. After retirement, Tim spent countless hours volunteering with E'Hawk athletics. He was a scorekeeper, announcer and statistician for several years. He was very active in Mainstreet Community Theatre where he served as a board member. Tim was elected to the Emmetsburg City Council in 2000. He was a member of the Green Party, where he ran for the United States Senate in 2002. Tim also enjoyed playing cards, politics and spending time with friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Cindy, of Emmetsburg; two sons, Aaron of Iowa City and Jesse of Emmetsburg; three brothers, Mark of Clear Lake, Paul of Garner and Matt of Ventura.

NEW HAVEN — Mary Louise Miller, age 86, of Rochester, Minn., and formerly of New Haven, Iowa, passed away Monday, (Feb. 21, 2005) at Rochester Health and Rehabilitation.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Burial will be  in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in New Haven.

There will be visitation one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Mary was born Dec. 6, 1918, in New Haven, to Peter and Rose (Byrnes) Miller. She was educated at St. Mary's Academy in New Haven and received her normal training and teacher certification at the seminary in Osage. Mary taught school at Douglas No, 2 and Mt. Hope in the rural school system. She continued her education at the University of Minnesota while in Minneapolis. Mary lived in the Minneapolis and Rochester, Minn., areas for most of her life, where she was employed as a stenographer. She lived for a time with her sister, Agnes, in Mt. Vernon, Mo. Mary always felt a close attachment to her many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and family genealogy.

Survivors include her sister, Ruth (Miller) Sullivan and her husband, Don, of Waterloo; sister-in-law, Marguerite Miller of New Haven; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Maureen was born July 11, 1919, in Mason City, the daughter of Henry and Bridget (O'Neill) Hocraffer. She married Alfred C. Berding on April 14, 1941, in Mason City. Maureen worked for State Brand Creamery, as a cook in a restaurant, and at Mercy Hospital and Gerard School. She also became a foster grandparent. Along with husband Alfred, they lived in Mason City, Osage, Manly, Plymouth and returned to Mason City in 1995.

Maureen was a member of St. James Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sports, crafts, camping, and cooking.

Maureen's family would like to give special thanks to the staff at the IOOF Home and Hospice of North Iowa for the care she received.

Mary, the daughter of Daniel Vorris and Jesse Katherine Faust Pigman, was born Jan. 5, 1913, near Duncombe, Iowa. She grew up on a farm in the Britt area and attended Hayfield country schools.

On Dec. 7, 1929, Mary was united in marriage with Raymond Perkins in Britt. To this union 13 children were born. The couple made their home in various communities in Iowa before settling in Corwith in 1953. Following the death of her husband Raymond in 1967, Mary continued to reside in Corwith until 1988 when she moved to an apartment in Belmond. She has been a resident of Kanawha Community Home since 1997.

Mary took great pride in working for many years in the Corwith-Wesley schools as a cook. She loved to garden, quilt and crochet. She will be especially remembered for her beautiful canned goods, fresh baked breads and pies and special candies at Christmas time.

Mary was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Corwith and the American Legion.

Mary is survived by 10 children, June Okland and special friend, Emory, of California, Alice Tabb of Colorado, Joan Anderson of Missouri, Marvin Perkins and his wife, Carol, of Iowa, Ramona Groebner and her husband, Don, of Minnesota, Patricia Penning and special friend, Leslie, of Iowa, Allen Perkins of Arizona, Robert Perkins and his wife, Marilyn, of Iowa, Karen Reher and her husband, Richard, of Michigan and Kathleen Dorr of Iowa; step-daughter, Marie Perkins, of Iowa; countless grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home, 319 Main Street in Nashua, with burial at Green-wood Cemetery, also in Nashua.

Visitation will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Edith Burnett was born in Chickasaw County on Jan. 16, 1911, the daughter of Harry and Lida (Todd) Goodell. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1929 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught in rural Chickasaw County schools.

Edith was united in marriage to Lester Burnett on June 3, 1930, at the Little Brown Church. To this union five children were born. They farmed in the Nashua area until 1947, when they moved to Rockford and opened their hardware and plumbing business. Edith worked as bookkeeper and secretary for a number of doctors after they sold the hardware store. Edith moved to Nora Springs and later to Nashua after Lester's death. She moved to the Nora Springs Care Center in 2000 due to failing health.

She enjoyed flowers, gardening, bingo and Las Vegas. She took great pride in keeping her home and yard in a neat and tidy condition.

Edith is survived by three sons, Tom (Carol) Burnett and Roger (Gayle) Burnett, all of Rockford, and Dick (Louise) Burnett of Vancouver, Wash.; one daughter, Beverly Gersema of Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter-in-law, Corrin Burnett of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Burnett of Charles City; 15 grandchildren and one stepgrandson; 11 great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Burnett; one son, Jerry Burnett; three grandsons, Doug and Ken Gersema and Dale Burnett; her parents; and one brother, Asa Goodell.

MASON CITY — Dale A. Brakel, 86 of Mason City, died Wednesday (Feb. 23, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services for Dale will be held 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 101 North Hawkeye Ave. in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Ruth Hansen officiating. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church on Saturday.

Dale was born Nov. 9, 1918, the son of Henry and Winnie (Terpeney) Brakel in rural Nora Springs. He attended country school near the family farm in Nora Springs. Dale was raised on the farm and made it a lifelong career. He retired from farming and moved to Mason City in 1980.

Dale was a quiet person and was content with working on the farm. He enjoyed driving around in his many new trucks and visiting his friends in nursing homes around the area. Dale liked to watch the old western movies and loved to socialize with people he met while eating out for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge.

Dale is survived by his daughter, Janet Lakey, of Corvallis, Ore.; a son, Jim Brakel and wife, Debbie, of Mason City; grandchildren, Jamie Barclay and husband, Robert, of Mason City, Sheryl Anderson and Steven Anderson, both of Portland, Ore.; a cousin, Rosie Phelps, of Mason City; a special friend, LaVonne Hain, of Ventura; and many nieces, nephews and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, Joseph Brakel; and a brother, Lyle Brakel.

GARNER — Arthur H. Hoeft, 98, of Garner, died Wednesday (Feb. 23, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, east of Garner, with the Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St. in Garner, and one hour prior to services at the church.
