Mark Dweldon Willis

CLEAR LAKE — Mark Dweldon Willis, 49, of 900 First Ave. N. in Clear Lake, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Derik Yarian and Lay Assistant Richard Scott officiating. Burial will be in the Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be directed to the Mark Willis Memorial Fund.

Mark Dweldon Willis was born March 30, 1955, in Forest City, the son of Eldon J. and Olina (Maakestead) Willis. He graduated from Forest City High School in 1973 and attended two years of technical school in Ankeny.

Mark excelled in high school sports, making the 1971 All Conference Team in football and made the All Conference teams in basketball.

Mark married Vicki Cooper on April 3, 1974, at the Forest City Lutheran Church, and to this union, three children were born: Chad, Stephanie and Brent.

Mark worked for Sears for eight years in customer service; owned his own ceiling cleaning business for four years; and worked for Opportunity Village as a job coach and supervisor.

Mark had been a visible and valuable citizen to the Clear Lake community. His involvement in many organizations had contributed a lot. He was a member of the Clear Lake Noon Lions, the Easter Seals Society, NIACOG (North Iowa Area Council of Governments), and several Opportunity Village committees.

Mark was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Mark is survived by his children, Chad Willis, of Chicago, Ill., Stephanie Willis, of Ames, and Brent Willis, of Clear Lake; his father, Eldon J. Willis and his wife Carole, of Forest City; brother, David Willis and his children, Jacob and Logan, of Forest City; sister, Joan Klein and her husband, Steve, and their children, Lindsay and Jamie, of Victoria, Texas; sister, Carol Willis, of Victoria, Texas, aunt, Opal Browning, of Minnesota; and ex-wife, Vicki Anderson, of Clear Lake.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Olina Willis.

Kenneth E. Stahl


KLEMME — Kenneth E. Stahl, 41, of Klemme, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2005) at the Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Peace Reformed Church, south of Garner, with the Rev. Jeff DeBoer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home, 160 E. Fourth St. in Garner and one hour prior to services at the church.

Kenneth Eugene Stahl, the son of Virgil and Berniece (Ruter) Stahl, was born April 28, 1963, at Belmond.

He was baptized on June 23, 1963, at Peace Reformed Church. He attended Happy ARC in Garner and was tutored at home by Mrs. Don Bacon.

He lived at home for 17 years until he entered the Concord Care Center in Garner.

In 1993, he moved to the Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

He was a member of Peace Reformed Church.

Kenneth is survived by his parents, Virgil and Berniece Stahl of Klemme; his brother, Wayne (Brenda) Stahl of Belmond; nieces and nephew, Renee, Breanna and Nathan Stahl; and his paternal grandmother, Myra Stahl of Belmond.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Pete and Anna Ruter; his paternal grandfather, Lewis Stahl; and a nephew, Joshua Stahl.

Marlo A. Durby


LAKE MILLS — Marlo A. Durby, 68, of Lake Mills, died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2005) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Burial will take place at Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and again one hour prior to the services on Thursday at the church.

Marlo Archie Durby was born Oct. 6, 1936, in rural Forest City, son of Palmer and Nettie (Rognehaugh) Durby.

He graduated from Thompson High School in the Class of 1954.

He was united in marriage to Donna Vermedal on Oct. 10, 1954, in Scarville, Iowa. To this union, three children were born: Tony, Cindy and Trisha.

On March 15, 1979, Marlo was united in marriage to Bethel (Lashbrook) Staff in Mason City.

Marlo was employed 43 years in the telephone business, including the RTA in Thompson, the Lake Mills Telephone Company as manager for 18 years and WCTA in Lake Mills as staff assistant for 17 years. Marlo retired in 2000.

Marlo was very active in the Lake Mills community, including 31 years on the Lake Mills Fire Department, six years as fire marshal and two years as fire chief. He served on the City Council for 24 years, as mayor pro tem for 10 of those years.

He was active in Salem Lutheran Church as member, on the church council and as past president. He was sports announcer for Lake Mills Bulldogs football and basketball games.

Marlo loved spending time on the golf course and also worked in the Pro Shop at Rice Lake Golf and Country Club after he retired.

Marlo is survived by his wife, Bethel Durby, of Lake Mills; three children, Tony and his wife Leontine Durby of St. Eustatius, Netherlands Antilles; Cindy and her husband Craig Haugsdal of Lake Mills; Trisha and her husband Jerry Dahl of Albert Lea, Minn.; three step-children, Linda and her husband Dick Smith of Cedar Falls, Marty and his wife Karen Staff of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; Mary and her husband Rick Lehman of Waterloo; 13 grandchildren, Danielle and Pascal Durby; Michael and Kari Haugsdal; Spencer, Emma and Carter Dahl; Lisa Schumacher; Shelley Lauritson; Sheri and Matt Staff; Sara Comer; and Chass Lehman; three great-grandchildren, Vaneesha, Jayla and Mya; one brother, Merle and his wife, Blanche Durby of Thompson; two sisters, Dorothy Guhl of Jewell, Iowa, and Ruby and her husband Dean Farland of Thompson; along with several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Marlo was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John; one sister-in-law, DeLores; one brother-in-law, Al Guhl; and two granddaughters, Dana Haugsdal and Hailey Dahl.

Ruth E. Fisher


MASON CITY — Ruth E. Fisher, 91, of Kentucky Ridge Assisted Living, 2060 S. Kentucky Ave. in Mason City, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2005) at the Good Shepard Health Center in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. William W. Poland officiating. Burial will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

In lieu of flowers, Ruth requested that memorials be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City.

Ruth was born on a farm southeast of Nora Springs on Oct. 18, 1913, to Glen and Leta (Scott) Stratford. She grew up on various farms near Mason City and received her education in the old one-room country school houses until she finished the eighth grade.


She then enrolled in the Mason City High School, from which she graduated in 1930.

In 1934, she was married to Ervin L. Fisher of Mason City. They spent most of their married life at 1724 S. Carolina Ave.

Ruth worked for 19 years for the Mason City Community School District cafeteria department. Then she was employed by the A.C. Nielsen Marketing Research Company until her retirement in 1978.

Later she sold her home and moved to the Regency Apartments at 1531 6th Place S.E. and lived there from 1981 until 2003. She then moved to the Kentucky Ridge Assisted Living.

Ruth was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church for 68 years. Ruth was active in the Wesley UMC WSCS women's circle.

Ruth is survived by her two children, Dr. Darrell (Susan) Fisher, of Mason City, and Jeannette Kloberdanz, of Mason City; and a dear son-in-law, Michael Scoville, of Cedar Rapids.

She also leaves nine grandchildren, Mark Fisher, of Oak Park, Ill.; Rebecca (Steve) Olsen, of Rosemount, Minn.; Brent (Jodi) Fisher, of Rochester, Minn.; Kevin (Sheila) Kloberdanz, of Mason City; Kirk (Lori) Kloberdanz, of Mason City; Kelly Kloberdanz, of Mason City; Kathy Rick and fiancé Brian Scheuss, of Cross Lake, Minn.; Michael Scoville Jr., of Cedar Rapids; Melvin (Nicky) Scoville, of Cedar Rapids; 15 great-grandchildren, Matthew Kloberdanz; Robbie Rick; Jennifer, Nichole and Tyler Kloberdanz; Vanessa, Kade, and Kyle Kloberdanz, all of Mason City; Brandon Rick; Ryan Honken, and Sam Scheuss, of Cross Lake, Minn.; Max and Sam Olson, of Rosemount, Minn.; Luke and Jack Fisher, of Rochester, Minn.; one great-great- grandchild, Cadyn Hanson, of Mason City; and two brothers, Lynn (Joan) Stratford, of Bakersfield, Calif.; and Lloyd (Doreen) Stratford, of Bend, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Ervin, in 1967; a dear daughter, Marilyn, in 1996; two brothers, Dayle and Roger Stratford; a sister, Irene Petersen; and a son-in-law, William Kloberdanz.

Carrol Marie Ungs


CLEAR LAKE — Carrol Marie Ungs, 84, of Clear Lake, died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2005) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake with Lay Assistant Richard L. Scott officiating.

Visitation time will be one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

Following the services military honors will take place at the church by the Clear Lake VFW. Inurnment will take place at a later date at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

The family of Carrol Marie Ungs has requested that memorial contributions be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Opportunity Village, Clear Lake All Vets Golf Course, and to the Clear Lake Parks and Recreation Department.

Carrol Marie Ungs was born on Dec. 23, 1920, in Grafton, the daughter of Richard and Clara (Wagner) Bartz. She graduated from Grafton High School and joined the Women's Army Corp during World War II. Carrol served two tours of duty and was honorably discharged at the rank of captain.

After leaving the service, she attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines.

She was united in marriage to Francis (Cy) Ungs in 1952, in Des Moines. Carrol and Cy lived in Des Moines, Keystone, Spencer and Charles City before settling in Clear Lake in 1957.

Carrol will be remembered for her commitment to family, faith, public service and volunteerism. Some of the organizations that benefited from Carrol's involvement and leadership include the City of Clear Lake, where she served on the City Council and Parks and Recreation Board, the Red Cross Swim Program, Opportunity Village, Opportunity Village Store, Zion Lutheran Church, and ELCA Church Women of Zion.

Carrol also enjoyed golf, playing cards, fishing, gardening and sewing.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, and the Clear lake All Vets Golf Course.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Cheri Grauer and her husband Ted of Van Meter, and Curtis Ungs and his wife Laurie of West Des Moines; and three grandchildren, Katelyn and Casey Ungs and Ben Grauer; first cousins, Jim Wagner of Billings, Mont., Tom Wagner of Grafton, and Harriet Kuntz of Mason City; as well as other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband Francis (Cy) Ungs.

Beverly C. Kalvig


MASON CITY — Beverly C. Kalvig, 68, of Mason City, died early Sunday morning (Jan. 30, 2005) at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with Majors Chuck and Lori Wright officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home in Mason City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to Beverly's service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the Beverly C. Kalvig Memorial Fund.

Beverly Carol Kalvig was born Feb. 23, 1936, in rural Corwith, to Seth D. and Rose L. (Denzel-Wedmore) Gourley. She was the youngest of five children born to her parents.

At the age of 10, Beverly relocated with her family from the Corwith and Britt area to Mason City, where she had since resided.

During her youth, Beverly was always active and many times was found climbing trees in her yard.

On Sept. 13, 1952, Beverly was united in marriage to Merle C. Kalvig in Mason City. Beverly and Merle became the proud parents of two sons and three daughters. Their marriage later dissolved, however, the couple remained active in securing the best interests of their children.

 Throughout her life, Beverly has always been a fan of country music. She loved to dance and in her quiet time, she enjoyed solving crossword puzzles.

Her other interests included collecting cat knick-knacks, tending to her vegetable garden, playing cards and board games and watching television, especially, "Hee Haw."

Beverly was a loving and devoted mother to her five children! Her family recall that their mother sacrificed much, worked hard and always tended to their needs, even though, Beverly was legally blind and held no driver's license.

They claim that Beverly would often gather her children around the table in the evenings and sing to them while the family played cards or games.

She baked great homemade cookies and is remembered for her specialties of bean soup and pork chops.

Beverly ironed mountains of her children's clothing, treasured a great strawberry malt and was highly respected by her childen and their spouses.

Life for Beverly was very difficult at times, yet, she remained soft-spoken, compassionate and a non-complainer.

Beverly was a former member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City.

Those who will greatly cherish the memory of Beverly and survive her are her children, Robert "Bob" (Joleen) Kalvig of Manly, Dian (Charles) Bagur of Mason City, Mark Kalvig of Mason City, Vicky (Virgil) Fett of Nora Springs, and Donna (Richard) O'Donnell of Mason City; her sister, LaVonne (Marvin) Rinnels of Mason City; her brothers, Dale (Lorraine) Gourley of Chicowah, Wisconsin and James Gourley of Mason City; her sister-in-law, Jenele Gourley of Mason City; and her very special friend, Shirley Carlson of Mason City.

She will also be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Travis (Jackie) Kalvig, Cameron Kalvig, Lindsay Kalvig, Joshua Kalvig, Cody Kalvig, Chris Bagur, Bill Fett, Kristy (Larry) Ausborn, James O'Donnell, William O'Donnell and Jonah O'Donnell and numerous other relatives and friends.

Beverly is preceded in death by her parents, Seth and Rose Gourley; her brother, Thomas Gourley; her niece, Kristy Rinnels and her two nephews, Terry Rinnels and Rick Gourley.

CHARLES CITY — Ila Jean Wegner, 76, of 2551 Woodland Place in Charles City, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2005) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Faith Bible Chapel, 1701 Ohio St. in Charles City, with Pastor Paul F. Phillips officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd.

MASON CITY — Herman J. Lundberg, 78, of 1417 Birch Drive, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2005) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Willson Chapel, First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. N.E. with the Rev. Samuel Hamilton-Poore officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

There will be no visitation.

Herman was born June 1, 1926, in Lund, Wis. the son of Herman J. and Harriett (Olson) Lundberg. He graduated from Eau Claire High School, Eau Claire, Wis., and Wisconsin State College.

Herman served in the Army Air Force from 1944 to 1946.

He married Marjorie A. Anderson on Sept. 2, 1950, in Eau Claire.

Herman worked as a sales manager for Murphy Oil Company for 27 years. He retired in 1991.

After living in Atlanta, Georgia, for many years, Herman and wife, Marjorie, moved to Mason City in 2002.

Herman is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Mason City; daughters, Marilyn Gaudreault and husband John of Omaha, Neb., Barbara Moreau and husband Tim of Mason City, Nancy Loschiavo and husband John of Paris, France; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Emily, Sarah, Nicole, Peter, Erik, Brian and Emma; brother, Kenneth Lundberg of Eau Claire, Wis.

Herman's parents and sister, Jean preceded him in death.

Arlyn O. Rauk


LELAND — Arlyn O. Rauk, 74, of Leland, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2005) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial will be in the Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Arlyn Ordean Rauk was born on his grandparents' farm in Mt. Valley Township, Winnebago County, Iowa, on Aug. 10, 1930, the son of Allen and Olga (Rusley) Rauk. He was baptized at home and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.

He received his education in rural school in Mt. Valley Township and graduated from Forest City High School in 1948.

He worked with his father on the family farm until being inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps in 1952. He was stationed in Japan with the peacekeeping forces following the Korean Conflict.

He was honorably discharged from the service in 1954 and returned home to work with his dad.

On June 23, 1978, he married Lila (Askeland) Egesdal at the Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills and the couple made their home in rural Leland.

Arlyn loved caring for animals and in his early years raised horses and milked cows. In later years, he discovered a passion for raising beef cattle and also enjoyed grain farming.

Arlyn was an avid sports fan. As a young man he bowled and was an excellent softball player. Over the years he attended as many games as he could to watch his children and grandchildren participate.

He treasured time spent with his family and loved to have coffee and visit with his friends.

He was a member of Winnebago Lutheran Church, the VFW and the American Legion.

Arlyn is survived by his wife, Lila Rauk of Leland; his children and their spouses: Kathy and Joe Skeens of Clive; Darla and Tim Tarmann of Cambridge, Minn., and Mark and Tammy Egesdal of Forest City. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren: Vanessa, Brittany, Katelyn and Courtney Skeens; Jennith and Dane Tarmann; Amber, Ashley, Annette, Zachary and Zarren Egesdal; a brother and sister-in-law, Carlyle and Dixie Rauk of Forest City; an uncle, Carlton Rauk and wife Ruby of Forest City; nephews, Kerby Rauk, Scott Rauk, Jeff Rauk and Kelly Rauk and numerous cousins.

GREENE — Max Harold Wegand, 78, of 11381 Lodge Ave., died Monday (Jan. 31, 2005) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Greene, with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. conducted by Vulcan Lodge 498 of Bristow. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

CHARLES CITY — Eva Boge, 81, of Charles City, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2005) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Eva Boge will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Carl Ries, officiating. Burial will be in Beckwith Cemetery, rural Charles City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City, with a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a Vigil Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Eva Susan Huckle Boge was born Dec. 13, 1923, at Le Mars, the daughter of Aloysius and Catherine (Bender) Huckle. She graduated from the Le Mars High School.

On Sept. 2, 1947, she was united in marriage to Eugene Boge. They lived in North Buena Vista until 1949 when they moved to a farm north of Charles City, where they would spend their lives together.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Anthony's Circle and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Eva's interests included sewing, gardening and swimming.

For a number of years she looked forward to spending their winters in Texas. Eva's family, however, meant everything to her and she made every effort to be a part of their lives.

Living family members include three sons, Kenny (Pam) Boge of Orchard, Roger (Teresa) Boge of Klemme, and Gordon "George" (Janet) Boge of Charles City; three daughters, Linda (Bob) Dodd of Klemme, Teresa Boge of Charles City, and Norma (Eldon) Conyers of Des Moines; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Norma L. Boge of Sacramento, Calif.; a sister, Rita Harms of Le Mars; and a brother, Martin (Lou) Huckle of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on Nov. 12, 2001; a son Bernard "Barney" on Jan. 29 1994; a grandson, Benjamin Boge; a brother, Duke Huckle; and a brother-in-law, Alfred Harms.

MASON CITY — Maxine May Johnson, 86, of Mason City died Friday (Jan. 28, 2005) at Heritage Care Center.

Maxine was born May 14, 1918, the daughter of Herman F. and Clara L. (Geiss) Priebe in Mason City. She attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1936.

Maxine then attended Hamilton School of Business in 1937.

She was united in marriage to Elvin G. Johnson on April 2, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Maxine worked for Meir Wolf & Sons, Ray Pauley Co., and most recently as a bookkeeper for the Mason City Water Department, from which she retired in 1969.

Maxine was a member of First United Methodist Church, and was a member of the church friends circle. She also volunteered in the office at the church as a helper.

Maxine is survived by her stepdaughter, Pat E. Johnson of Plano, Texas; and many stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Elvin; one stepson, Robert E. Johnson; two brothers and four sisters.

RUDD — Mrs. Lucille M. Bartell, 97, formerly of Mason City and Rudd died Saturday (January 29, 2005) in Tawas City, Michigan.

Mrs. Bartell was born on the 14th of July, 1907, in Algona, Kossuth County, Iowa, to Adeline Sifert and Joseph Scoville. She attended Mason City schools.

Lucille worked at Stoddard Manufacturing during World War II and at Kresge's Department Store, where she retired as millinery manager. She also performed the accounting duties for her husband's business.

On August 19, 1929, she was united in marriage with Delos at her brother's home in Ames.

She loved nature, especially feeding and watching birds and she loved to go fishing. Lucille was also an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling. She was a long-time member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and later the Rudd United Methodist Church. Prior to that, she was certified as a Sunday School teacher at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mason City. She was a long-time member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Cultural Club in Rudd.

She took great joy and pride in her family.

Left to cherish her memories are her sons, Glenn A. Bartell and his wife, Evelyn, of Wrens, Ga., Rex D. Bartell and his wife, Cecilia, of Mason City, Dr. Larry S. Bartell of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; and one beloved daughter, Alice L. Bailey and her husband, John, of Tawas City, Mich.

Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Delos A. Bartell, her parents, five sisters, and four brothers.

Elvera W. Logan was born October 16, 1924, at Sheffield, the daughter of George and Freida (Reineking) Plagge. She was united in marriage to Martin Logan on July 29, 1945, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rockwell.

She lived most of her life in Mason City, raising seven children. She worked for Mercy Hospital, Home Healthcare, and Good Shepherd. She was always dedicated to helping others.

Elvera was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church for over 50 years.

Vera is survived by five sons, Jim (Merrie Lee) Logan, Baton Rouge, La., Joe (Deb) Logan, Randy (Teresa) Logan, Brian (Nancy) Logan, and Brent Logan, all of Mason City; one daughter, Nancy (Rick) Delmonico, Burnsville, Minn.; 16 grandchildren: Kim, Wendy, Kevin, Joe, Matt, Garrett, Angie, Adam, Tara, Ben, Adrian, Jackie, Jessie, Sandy, Blake, and Oriana; four great- grandchildren; Mallory, Noah, Megan, and Cole; three brothers, Dallas (Carla) Plagge, Merlin (Shirley) Plagge, and Maynard Plagge; a sister-in- law, Elaine Plagge; and many special nieces, nephews, and friends.

Her spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew her.

BRITT — Marvin Holck, 73, of Britt passed away Sunday (Jan. 30, 2005) at his home in Britt.

Marvin, the son of William and Margaret Jacobson Holck, was born on July 19, 1931, on the family farm near Britt.

He attended Britt Grade School and graduated from Britt High School. While attending high school, Marvin was an Iowa Golden Gloves Boxer.

On March 15, 1965, Marvin was united in marriage with Peggy Sue Davis in Britt. The couple made their home in Britt where they raised their family.

Marvin was employed by Herman Buns and Son Construction, Winnebago Industries, Hancock County and IMT Transport.

Following his retirement, Marvin enjoyed farming with friends and relatives until well into his 70s. In his spare time, he also worked for Ed DeGeus.

He loved spending time with his grandchildren and hearing about their successes and achievements in school and sports.

Marvin enjoyed fishing, hunting and racing; he was very involved in helping to bring great racing to Britt. He was instrumental in helping build the Hancock County Speedway and was dedicated to maintaining the great condition of the track for three years.

Marvin was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and was enthusiastic about being involved with the Knights of Columbus he enjoyed helping with the rides at the county fair and food stand at Hobo Days. He achieved 4th Degree Knight status and served as Grand Knight for one year. Marvin also volunteered to provide communion to all in need. He was always there for everyone else and will be missed by all.

Marvin is survived by his wife Peggy Sue of Britt; six children: Jacqueline Marie and her husband, Dan Hampe of Ames, Tracie Lee and her husband Matt Covey of Lincoln, Neb., Kristie Lynn and special friend Doug Suby of Garner, William Marvin Holck II of Britt, Connee Rennee and special friend, Tom Blumer, of Garner, and Kathy Parks of San Antonio, Texas; 11 grandchildren: Christopher Covey, Ryan and Chris Hampe, Jesse and Dakota Lambert, Nakita and Todd Holck, Megan and Jacob Balsley, Shelly Parks; sisters: Edith Drabek of Garner and Evelyn Buffington and husband John of Mason City.

RICEVILLE — Mark Joseph Jameson, 62, of 201 Forest Street in Riceville, died Monday morning, (January 31, 2005) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a short illness.

Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Atwood officiating.

Friends may call at the church after 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Mark was born January 13, 1943, in Chester, Pa., the son of Maurice and Julia (Potter) Jones Pever. He worked as an auditor for Kinseth Corporation for many years, retiring in October of 2003. He was a big fan of boxing, wrestling and the Green Bay Packers and his sister-in-law's deviled eggs. He deeply cared for his family and loved them with all of his heart. He will be deeply missed by those who had the privlege of knowing him.

Mark is survived by his dearest partner, Sherry Krantz, of Riceville; his son, Christopher Jones (Helene); and his granddaughter, Marni Jaye Jones, of Newark, N.J.; his closest brother, Thomas Jones (Peggy) of Mason City; and two other brothers, Michael and David Jones of New Jersey.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Corrine Harrison

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Corrine E. (Wolf) Harrison, 75, died on Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2005) at Bethany Lutheran Home after a lengthy battle with diabetes.

Corrine was born on Feb. 19, 1929, in Fredonia, N.D., to Karl and Pauline Wolf. She taught elementary grades in Hurley and Lennox, SD.

In the fall of 1955, she accepted a grade school position in Mason City, and moved on to become a librarian at Roosevelt Junior High School, retiring in 1984.

Corrine attended the University of Sioux Falls and went on to receive her B.A. degree from Iowa State Teachers College and her M.A. from the University of Illinois in Urbana, Ill.

Corrine was united in marriage with Lewis Harrison and they lived in Mason City, Iowa.

After retiring, they spent their winters in Apache Junction, Ariz. She was a member of First Baptist Curch of Mason City.

She was active in church work, singing in the choir, working on crafts, fishing, camping, and traveling.

Corrine is survived by her sister, Florence M. Knudson; nephews, Todd S. Knudson, Kip T. Knudson and niece Tami J. (Charles) Burkard, all of Sioux Falls.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Lewis; her parents; and brother-in-law, Elmer Knudson.

Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Heritage Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to service time. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

BRITT — Thomas Gilmore "Tom" Hughes, 71, of Britt passed away Sunday (Jan. 30, 2005) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Tom, the son of Leo and Winifred (Gilmore) Hughes, was born on May 29, 1933, in Britt.

As a young boy he shined shoes on Main Street, delivered papers and telegrams and worked at the local grocery store.

Tom attended and graduated from Britt High School in 1952.

Tom was united in marriage to Rose R. Wellik on Nov. 8, 1954, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. During his lifetime Tom was employed by the Britt Farmers Coop, Kabrick Distributing in Britt and J&W Distributing in Mason City.

In 1984, Tom and Rose established RTC's Lounge in Algona.

Upon retiring in 1994, Tom had various part-time jobs including driving cars for Pritchard Auto, janitor at the Kanawha School and seasonal work at AgMax Partners.

Tom was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt and a member of Catholic Workmen Branch 51.

Tom's pride and joy were his four grandchildren. Tom enjoyed driving his car and solving the world's problems on the corner with the gang.

Tom is survived by his five children: Becky of Marion, Conn., Mary Jo of Britt, Linda of Britt, Todd and wife Jennifer of Thompson, and Jeffrey of Britt; three granddaughters: Bailey, Lucy and Ella; and one grandson Thomas; four sisters: Mary Leverenz of Santa Clara, Calif., Coleen Davison and husband Joe of Mary Ester, Fla., Michele Hostman and husband Robert of Britt, and Kathryn Smith and husband Paul of Britt; uncle Forrest Gilmore and wife Mildred of Trenton, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Leo and Winnie; his beloved wife of 48 years Rose in 2002; and a brother-in-law, Clifton Leverenz.

Virginia made her home with her parents on the farm for many years. For the last 20 years she lived at Town Square Apartments in Forest City.

She enjoyed babysitting and caring for children.

Virginia liked to play cards with friends and go to the movies.

She is survived by her sisters, Janice Graham and husband Richard of Forest City, Kathryn Lansing and husband Eugene of Westland, Mich., Bonnie Kelly of Des Moines, and Shirley Johnson and husband Wallace of Aurora, Colo. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Ardis Helvick and Alvada Helvick, both of Forest City, and many nieces and nephews.

Paul was an avid Chicago Cubs, Miami Dolphins, and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He was also an avid follower and supporter of all Osage High School athletics. He enjoyed spending time with his many friends.

Memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Eddie May III officiating.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Swaledale, with military honors conducted by members of the Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association.

Edgar Floyd May Sr. was born July 17, 1921, in Kanawha, the son of  Charles and Viola (Mays) May. Edgar attended school in Forest City.

He enlisted in the United States Army on Nov. 5, 1942, serving during World War II.

Edgar married Bonnie (Ward) May on June 15, 1947, in Swaledale. To this union four children were born.

Edgar owned and operated the Conoco gas station on 19th and South Federal for 16 years.

He went to work for Speed Alman driving a gas tanker, later working and retiring from Butler Curtis Oil, in Mason City.

After retirement, Edgar and Bonnie enjoyed winter-ing in Donna, Texas.

Edgar enjoyed fishing, playing softball and woodworking crafts. He was an avid sports fan.

He was member of the V.F.W. and Swaledale Methodist Church.

BELMOND — Timothy Dorr, 36, of Rowan, passed away Monday (Jan. 31, 2005) at Belmond Medical Center.

Funeral service for Tim Dorr will be held 1:30 p.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Ray Salemink officiating. Burial will take place in Graceland Cemetery near Rowan.

Timothy O'Larry Dorr, the son of O'Larry and Mary Wedekin Dorr, was born on Aug. 21, 1968, in Belmond Iowa. He was raised in the Belmond area and graduated from high school in 1986.

While in high school, Tim participated in wrestling and qualified for the state tournament two years.

On Aug. 23, 1996, Tim was united in marriage to Tracy Riedel in Sioux City, Iowa. The family made their home in Rowan.

Tim was a true family man and adored his wife, Tracy and their daughter, Kaitlyn.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and was recently elected as the church's vice president.

Tim worked for Dorr and Sons Construction with his father and brothers for seven years.

He spent the past five years as a proud team member at Pella Windows of Story City.

Tim was an avid Viking fan with a great love of football.

Some of his hobbies included working crossword puzzles, storm chasing, the Humboldt Motorcycle Rally, fishing with Kaitlyn, loving his pets, Diamond and Nika, golfing and playing Risk with his brothers.

Tim was a very caring and giving person — always willing to help anyone who needed it.

He was a person who loved to hug and all his friends and family will miss those great bear hugs.

Tim always enjoyed a great laugh with family and friends.

Most of all, Tim enjoyed being a father to Kaitlyn.

Tim loved family outings to the woods and holidays, especially Christmas.

He was a very caring and sympathetic person, compassionate and BIG-hearted. He always had a positive outlook and a wonderful sense of humor.

Tim was very patriotic and loved his country. Tim will be deeply missed by all his family and friends.

Max H. Wegand


GREENE — Funeral services for Max H. Wegand, 78, of 11381 Lodge Ave., will be 10:30 a.m. today at United Methodist Church in Greene with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Max Harold Wegand was born Oct. 13, 1926, on the Wegand home place, a son of Clyde Hardman and Edna Mae (Lockwood) Wegand, and died Jan. 31, 2005, completing his circle of life at the place where he was born.

He received his education in Greene public schools, graduating in 1944.    He enlisted in the U. S. Navy on Oct. 6, 1944, and served as a hospital apprentice second class at the U.S. Navy Hospital in Farragut, Idaho.

Following his honorable discharge on June 21, 1946, he returned to Greene where he began farming on the home place.

During this time he supplemented his income by working various places in-cluding Thermogas, Greene Limestone and Greene Farm Equipment.

On May 11, 1951, he was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Potter at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in Greene and to this union were born four children.

In 1970, Max became a Standard Oil agent when he purchased a tank wagon oil business from Jim McLennan, which he operated until his retirement in 1994. Max enjoyed 24 years as a businessman in Greene and loved working with the people he served.

Max was stricken with Parkinson's Disease in 1995-96, but continued to remain active until 2002, when the disease rendering him unable to do the many things he enjoyed.

He was a lifelong member of United Methodist Church in Greene, past master of Alpha Lodge No. 326 A.F. & A.M., past worthy patron of May Day Chapter O.E.S., 50-year member of Vulcan Lodge No. 498 A.F. & A.M., past president of Round Grove Golf & Country Club, member of the Greene Commercial Club and the Tack Barnett Post No. 268 American Legion of Greene.

Max had a firm faith in God which led him to focus his life around a hard work ethic, family and friends.

He was very proud of his family and of living on the family-owned century farm. Max took great care of the farm and was especially proud of his yard.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Patricia Ann, of Greene; his children, Dan (Jan) Wegand of Glen Rose, Texas, Ann (Terry) Thomason of Greene, Bob (Nancy) Wegand of Grundy Center, Jean (Bob) Fox of West Des Moines; 10 grandchildren, Alison and Zak Wegand, Matt (Jamie) Jackson and Melissa Jackson, Christopher (Lupe) Thomason, Sara (Dan) Marsh, Patrick (Kelly) Thomason, Andrew, Ben and Mollie Fox; five great-grandchildren, Cortlynn Jackson, Timothy Thomason, Paige, Claire and Lauren Marsh; two sisters, Mary Lou (Keith) Hadley of Charles City and Barbara (Jim) McKay of Spencer; two brothers-in-law, Mike (Margaret) Potter of Minneapolis and Jim (Jackie) Speedling of Bend, Ore.; many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

DOWS — Merlin George Peyton, 84, of Dows, died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

His body will be cremated upon his wishes and their will be no services.

Merlin was born Dec. 25, 1920, the son of Harry and Mabel (Sarber) Peyton. He attended rural schools in the Clarion area and worked for area farmers.

Merlin was united in marriage to Elaine Severson on Jan. 23, 1942, in Trenton, Mo.

He was inducted into the Army and served during World War II from 1942 until he was discharged in 1945. After returning home from World War II, he lived in Riceville and Chicago before moving his family to Mason City.

He was employed by A & M Concrete, A & M Prestress in Clear Lake and Cerro Gordo County in Clear Lake.

Jack R. Kabrick was born Oct. 25, 1919, at Dickens, Iowa, one of eight children to Clarence and Susan Kabrick.

He attended school at Spencer and served in the US Navy during World War II from 1941-45.

Jack spent his career in sales. Prior to moving to Mason City, he worked    as a sales representative in Mitchell and Sioux Falls, S.D., for Sunshine Bakeries and at a wholesale liquor company.

In 1963, Jack and his brother purchased the former Craychee Distributing Co. in Mason City and operated it as Kabrick Distributing Inc.

Jack remained involved in the family business and continued to come to the office daily until his death.

True to his South Dakota roots, he was an avid pheasant hunter, enjoyed annual fishing trips to Canada and golfing.

Jack's memberships in-clude Elks, Moose, VFW, American Legion, Mason City Country Club, Iowa Beer Wholesalers Association, and the National Beer Wholesalers Association.

He is survived by two sons, James (Mairead) Hahn of Mason City, Kenneth (Minnie) Hahn of Payson, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Michelle (Kelly) Roth of Mason City, Jason Hahn of Clear Lake, Doug (Brenda) Weeks of Sioux Falls, S.D., Laurie (Kent) Ausland of Sioux Falls, S.D., Lisa (Rick) Esparza, of Laverne, Minn., Mark (Mary) Weeks of Omaha, Neb.; and several great-grandchildren.

Tim Alfred Gilmore


VERO BEACH, Fla. — Tim Alfred Gilmore, 59, formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in Vero Beach after a brave fight with cancer.

He was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on March 17, 1945. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1963.

Tim joined the U.S. Navy on June 11, 1963, and served proudly during the Vietnam War. After eight years of service, he returned to Mason City and was employed by McDonald's restaurants. Tim served as area operational supervisor for five McDonald's stores until 1987.

In 1987, he became the owner-operator of his own McDonald's restaurant  on Boca Chica Naval Air Station, Key West, Fla., and two years later built another in Marathon, Fla. He operated both stores until his retirement in 1998.

Tim was a Freemason and a member of Harding Lodge No. 649 in Mason City.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Judith Gilmore, of Vero Beach, Fla.; daughter, Kelly Dimitroglou, her husband, Dimitrios, and their four children, all of Attleboro, Mass.; son, Tim Eric Gilmore, his wife, Nicole, and their  three sons, all of Mason City; son, Neil Gilmore, his wife, Jennifer, and their daughter, all of Des Moines; a brother, John Gilmore of Ames; a sister, Mary Patterson of Vero Beach, Fla; and a brother, Thomas Seeberger, of Brooklyn, N.Y.

His father, John Gilmore; his mother, Jane; and a brother, Charles, preceded him in death.

Russell Franklin Shanks was born July 24, 1917, in Blairstown, Iowa, to Ray W. and Nelda (Scherger) Shanks.

After his mother's death the following year, Russell and Ray moved to a farm between Nora Springs and Mason City.

Russell graduated from Nora Springs High School and attended Hamilton Business College.

In 1936, Russell married Winifred Hart and they farmed in the area until they retired in 1983 to a home overlooking the river in Nora Springs.

He was an Archer Oil dealer and worked part time for the Mason City ASC office.

Russell was a lifetime member of United Methodist Church of Nora Springs.

He served as a 4-H leader for a number of years. He was an active member of the Nora Springs Historical Society, the North Iowa Rock and Mineral Club and the Rock Grove Cemetery Committee.

Russell was an active outdoorsman. His hobbies included piloting his own plane, camping, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing and collecting fossils.

Russell is survived by his wife, Winifred, of Nora Springs; two sons, Howard (Laura) Shanks of Ames and Michael (Colleen) Shanks of Nora Springs. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Kevin Shanks of Franktown, Colo., Brent (Jackie) Shanks of Ames, Kimberly (Shawn) Majors of Ankeny, Lisa (Chris) Smith of Clear Lake, Julie (Brad) Nelson of Nora Springs and Brad (Jeannie) Shanks of Nora Springs; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Raymond Friedrich Boehnke, the son of Emil and Frieda (Lade) Boehnke, was born Dec. 1, 1915, on a farm northeast of Garner. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church.

He attended St. John's Parochial School and Garner High School. Following his schooling, he farmed with his father.

On July 25, 1936, he married Ruby Hage at Algona. They lived on the home farm where they raised their family and he continued to farm.

Ray also owned a gas truck, which he used to deliver fuel for the Hancock County Co-op Oil Co. in Garner until retiring in 1980. Ray had lived on the home farm his entire life.

He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, bowling, fishing, dancing, playing cards and, especially, entertaining his family.

He was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he was active in various offices.

Ray is survived by his wife, Ruby, of Garner; five daughters, Virginia (Don) Brocker of Woodbury, Minn., Barbara Needham of Mound, Minn., Kay (Alden) Lundebrek of Starbuck, Minn., Patricia (Dick) Nordman of Arlington Heights, Ill., and Rebecca (David) Ziesmer of Belmond; 14 grandchildren, Victoria (Edward) Huebsch, Michelle Holmgren, Patrice (John) Horner, Michael (Deborah) Brocker, David (Robyn) Needham, Jonathan (Kami) Needham, Patrick Needham, Dana (Charles) Parks, John (Heather) Lundebrek, Sarah (David) Solak, Matthew (Karen) Nordman, Angela (Michael) Ryg, Alison Ziesmer and Derek Ziesmer; 37 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillian Wetterling of Mason City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Eleanor Erdmann


OSAGE — Eleanor Erdmann, 77, of Osage, died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2005) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage of injuries she received in an accidental fall.

Eleanor was born on the family farm near Morristown, Minn., on Oct. 10, 1927, the daughter of Jesse and Adelaide (Tolzman) White. She was the second of 12 children. Eleanor attended country school and graduated from Morristown High School.

Eleanor was united in marriage to Gilbert E. Erdmann on July 4, 1948, at Faribault, Minn. They made their home in Osage, where they raised five children.

Eleanor loved to entertain and always made sure that the table had an appropriate centerpiece for the occasion. A family gathering didn't just have one salad or vegetable, but usually two or three, all made with love.

Cooking was her interest her whole life, starting with helping to feed 11 siblings, to caring for her own five children, to preparing meals at the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital. No one ever left her house hungry.

Eleanor came from a very musical family and loved to sing a lively hymn. She also possessed the very unique ability of playing the saw. She had a very strong faith in God that guided her, her whole life.

Eleanor was a member of First Baptist Church in Osage and was a member of the Ann Judson Circle.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Osage with the Rev. Douglas Brown officiating. Inurnment will be in Osage Cemetery.

NORA SPRINGS — Lola "Lou" M. Reetz, 72, of Nora springs, formerly of the Charles City and Bassett areas, passed away Wednesday afternoon, (Feb. 2, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua with a memorial tribute at 3:30 p.m. Burial of the ashes will be in Rock Grove Cemetery in Nora Springs at a later date.

She is survived by four sons, Doyle Johnson Jr. (Dee) of Prairie Du Chien, Wis., Scott Johnson (Tammy) of Nora Springs, David Johnson (Lori) of Waseca, Minn., and Todd Johnson (Robin) of Memphis, Tenn.; two daughters, Patty Bilharz (Daniel) of Nashua and April Martin of Waseca, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dale and Verne Willert, both of Charles City; and one sister, Ramona Jacobson, of Toddville.

Lola was preceded in death by her parents; and infant daughter, Tersia Johnson; one sister, Norma Frisbie; and one daughter-in-law, Vicki Johnson.

Lola M. Reetz was born Sept. 16, 1932, in Charles City, the daughter of Alfred and Maryetta (Lohr) Willert. She was raised in Charles City and graduated from Charles City High School in 1950.

She was united to Doyle Dean Johnson on Nov. 26, 1950, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charles City. To this union seven children were born. They lived in the Bassett area before moving to Nashua. They were later divorced. Lola married Sonny Reetz and they were later divorced.

Along with being a housewife, Lola worked at White Farm for a short time, then was the owner operator of the S & L Tap in Bassett for a number of years.

She also owned and operated the Bassett Convenience Store. She later moved to Waseca, Minn., and was employed by Wahis Liquor for about 10 years. She moved to Nora Springs in 2001.

Lola enjoyed her family, gardening, fishing and traveling.

GARNER — Allen Barz, 80, of Garner, died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2005) at his home.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner with the Rev. Darrell Weber as officiant. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Allen Barz, the son of Henry and Clara (Born) Barz, was born June 1, 1924, on the family farm east of Klemme. He attended school at Klemme, graduating in 1941.

Al served his country in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He attended Lakeland (formerly Mission House) College in Sheboygan, Wis.

Al worked at First National Bank in Klemme for five years and then bought the Wellik Insurance Agency in Garner, which he sold in 1990.

On Oct. 17, 1948, he married Ihlajean Johnson at Klemme Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ.

After moving to Garner, he became a member of Zion Evangelical & Reformed Church. He sang in church choirs for more than 65 years, taught Sunday school and was a youth leader.

He was a 50-year member of Rotary, where he was a song leader and a Paul Harris Fellow. For many years he was an announcer for KCMR in Mason City.

He enjoyed playing golf and loved entertaining.

He is survived by his wife, Ihlajean; three sons, Mark Barz and his wife, Dalena, of Ventura, and Michael Barz and Dan Barz, both of Minneapolis, Minn.; four grandchildren, Nathan Barz of Ventura, Erika Kirby and her husband, Bob, of Omaha, Neb., Nora Muessingmann of Omaha, Neb., and Melissa Dakin of Fort Collins, Colo.; four great-grandchildren, Chloe and Evan Muessingmann and Samantha and Meredith Kirby; a brother, Ray Barz of Waupaca, Wis.; a sister, Avis Hagen and her husband, Eldon, of Klemme; a sister-in-law, Gladys Barz and his mother-in-law, Gay Horgen, of Albert Lea, Minn.

Richard Dean Sletten was born Jan. 3, 1934, in rural Freeborn County, Minn., to parents Albert and Alma (Nelson) Sletten.

Following the death of his mother in 1935, Richard was cared for by various family members. At age 3, Richard came to live with his uncle and aunt, Pearlin and Ella Pederson.

He was baptized at home and was confirmed at North Prairie Lutheran Church. Richard attended country school and public school in the communities of Scarville, Leland and Lake Mills, graduating with the class of 1952.

On June 12, 1955, Richard was united in marriage with Arlene Schultz at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, Iowa. The couple made their home in rural Leland, Iowa, where Richard farmed for a number of years.

In August 1979, they moved into Lake Mills and Richard worked for Land O' Lakes in Albert Lea, Minn., and Winnebago Industries in Forest City before retiring.

Richard truly enjoyed watching sports, especially football and Chicago Cubs baseball. Richard thrived on the friendships he had with his coffee buddies at Hardee's in Forest City.

Pete, the son of Harm and Jennie (Miller) Lewerke, was born on April 17, 1913, in Ackley, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Viola Broome on April 5, 1935. He was a truck farmer for many years before selling out in 1955.

He later purchased a milk route in Blue Earth, Minn., where he worked for several years. The family moved to Garner in 1961, where he began his own trucking business, retiring in 1985.

He was a faithful member of Britt Zion Church of the Nazarene. He loved his church and his Lord.

MASON CITY — Jack R. Kabrick, 85, of 75 Briarstone Court, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2005) at his home.

Jack R. Kabrick was born Oct. 25, 1919, at Dickens, Iowa, one of eight children to Clarence and Susan Kabrick. He was united in marriage to Maxine N. Shouse on Aug. 18, 1952.

He attended school at Spencer, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1941-45.

Jack spent his career in sales. Prior to moving to Mason City, he worked as a sales representative in Mitchell and Sioux Falls, S. D. for Sunshine Bakeries and a wholesale liquor company.

In 1963, along with his brother, Jack purchased the former Craychee Distributing Co., Mason City and operated it as Kabrick Distributing, Inc. Jack remained involved in the family business and continued to come to the office daily until his death.

True to his South Dakota roots, he was an avid pheasant hunter and enjoyed an-nual fishing trips to Canada and golfing.

Jack's memberships in-cluded, Elks, Moose, VFW, American Legion, Mason City Country Club, Iowa Beer Wholesalers Association, and the National Beer Wholesalers Association.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine Kabrick, of Mason City; two sons, James (Mairead) Hahn of Mason City and Kenneth (Minnie) Hahn of Payson, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Michelle (Kelly) Roth of Mason City, Jason Hahn of Clear Lake, Doug (Brenda) Weeks of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Laurie (Kent) Ausland of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Lisa (Rick) Esparza of Laverne, Minn., and Mark (Mary) Weeks of Omaha, Neb.; and several great-grandchildren.

Edgar Floyd May Sr. was born July 17, 1921, in Kanawha, the son of Charles and Viola (Mays) May. Edgar attended school in Forest City.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Nov. 5, 1942, and served during World War II.

Edgar married Bonnie (Ward) May on June 15, 1947, in Swaledale. To this union four children were born.

Edgar owned and operated the Conoco gas station on 19th and South Federal for 19 years.

He went to work for Speed Alman driving a gas tanker, later working at and retiring from Butler Curtis Oil in Mason City.

After retirement, Edgar and Bonnie enjoyed wintering in Donna, Texas.

Edgar enjoyed fishing, playing softball and woodworking crafts. He was an avid sports fan.

He was member of the VFW and Swaledale Methodist Church.

Bernedetta "Bea" Bernice Brackey was born on July 24, 1913, in Woden, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Barth) Etzen. She graduated from Hayfield High School in Hayfield, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Alfred Brackey on Feb. 14, 1935, in Forest City and to this union seven children were born. Bea worked at various jobs and was a housekeeper in Albert Lea for several years before moving to Northwood in 1974 to be near her daughter, Arlys Reeder.

Bea was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She enjoyed playing cards, watching TV, crossword puzzles, sitting at the hotel with Harry and Arlys and visiting with her extended family, Junior and Nancy.

Bea also loved to bake and was well-known for her brownies, banana cream pies and angel food birthday cakes.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Mary Circle, Alter Guild, First Lutheran Church Women's Club and Senior Citizens, where she served as treasurer, all in Northwood.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Arlys Reeder and her husband, Harry, of Northwood, Alfred Brackey Jr. and his wife, Delores, of Waukegan, Ill, Garvin Brackey of Coon Rapids, Minn., Barbara Anderson and her husband, Richard, of St. Paul, Minn., Mary Lee Brackey of Mankato, Minn., and Thomas Brackey and his wife, Kathleen, of Oakdale, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Cook of Clear Lake and Louise Hanson of LeRoy, Minn.; one brother, Ed Etzen and wife, Dorothy, of Forest City; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Her parents, husband, Alfred; an infant daughter, Rosell Brackey; a daughter-in-law, Lois Brackey; three brothers, Enno, Pete and John Etzen; and two sisters, Grace Larson and Rose Peterson; preceded her in death.

Bea was very proud of her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will be greatly missed by all her family.

CLEAR LAKE — Ben J. Thomes, 93, 1107 S. Third St., Clear Lake, died the morning of Friday (Feb. 4, 2005) in his sleep at his home.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave. S. in Clear Lake, with Monsignor Robert Hogan officiating. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with a Scriptural wake service at     4 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Memorials may be presented to the Ben J. Thomes Memorial Fund.

Ben was born March 27, 1911, in rural St. Martin, Minn., the son of John and Mary (Athmann) Thomes. He attended a one-room school house in St. Martin, Minn.

Ben worked on the family farm for many years. Then he went to work at St. Joseph's Old Folks Home in La Crosse, Wis., in maintenance where he met his wife, Lorrine, who worked in the kitchen.

They were married on June 14, 1941, and were married more than 63 years. They moved to Eden Valley, Minn., where he worked at Farm Implement Service.

Ben served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following the service, they lived in Eden Valley and later bought a filling station in Paynesville, Minn.

Later they moved to Cudahy in 1947. Ben went to work as a mechanic and machine builder for Ladish Co. in Cudahy for 29 years.

In December 2002, they moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, to be close to his son, Norb, and his family.

Ben enjoyed woodworking as a hobby, making furniture for family members and fishing. He enjoyed a good joke and had a great sense of humor.

Ben was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Ben is survived by his wife Lorrine Thomes, of Clear Lake; one son, Norb Thomes and his wife, Marie, of Clear Lake; two daughters, Ceci Thomes, of Cerrillos, N.M., and Gine Thomes-Cotter, of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Colleen Cotter and her husband, David, of San Diego, Calif., Jon Dunnum and his wife, Suzi, of Lubbock, Texas, Kathy Rewolinski of Elkhorn, Wis., Colin Cotter of Los Angeles, Calif., Jeremy Dunnum of Cerrillos, N.M., Thomas Rewolinski and his wife, Liz, of Hartland, Wis., and Andy Thomes of Clear Lake; two great-grandchildren, Somiya and Kira Dunnum; one brother, Martin Thomes of St. Cloud, Minn.; three sisters, Sister Marie Thomes of La Crosse, Wis., Sister Cecila Thomes of Onalaska, Wis., and Agnes Niehaus of Richmond, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Loretta Thomes of Paynesville, Minn., and Marie Thomes of Melrose, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, two sisters, and his daughter, Phyllis.

Ina Mae Major


NEVADA — Ina Mae Major, of Nevada, formerly of Des Moines, has joined the angels in heaven on Feb. 3, 2005, after an extended illness with Alzheimer's disease.

A private family burial service will be today at Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City, Iowa.

Ina Mae was born on Oct. 14, 1920, in Mason City, where she grew up and graduated from Mason City High School.

Upon graduation, she attended junior college in Mason City and Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, prior to her marriage to Robert Major on April 25, 1942. The two shared 58 years together before his passing in May 2000.

Ina Mae was a devoted homemaker for many years while raising her children. From 1970 until the onset of her illness, she worked beside her husband in the business they shared at Highland Park Funeral Home in Des Moines.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star; Auburn De Nova Chapter No. 449, of which she received her 50-year pin for membership, and Epworth United Methodist Church, where she was active in various women's groups.

She and her husband were former members of Hyperion Golf and Country Club and the Ankeny Golf and Country Club.

Ina Mae enjoyed traveling and spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandsons.

She was a most loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, always putting others before herself.

Ina Mae was best described as a "true lady," and was in every sense of the word.

She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by those who had the distinct privilege of knowing her.

Survivors include one daughter, Robin and her husband, Rex Adams, of Maxwell; three grandsons and one great-granddaughter, Brett (Dawn) Adams and Gabrielle of Ankeny; Chad Adams of West Des Moines, and Bryan Adams of Maxwell. One son, Terry, also survives.

Ina Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Robert.

Her daughter's family would like to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff of caregivers at Rolling Green Village in Nevada, Iowa, for the loving care and compassion that was given to their mother and grandmother during the time Ina Mae spent with them.

HAMPTON — Berniece Echelberger, 80, of Hampton, Iowa, formerly of Greene, Iowa, passed away Thursday (Feb. 3, 2005) at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Sietsema- Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton with the Rev. Roger Crawford and the Rev. Randy Crane officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Dows.

She was born on Sept. 19, 1924, in Dows, Franklin County, the daughter of Ross and Veva (Bridges) Peyton.

She received her education at the Dows School, graduating with the class of 1941. She was married to Raymond Schwieger.

To this union, two sons, Daniel and Randy, were born. Raymond was killed in action during World War II.

She later married Vern Echelberger at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, and to this union one son was born, Royce.

She became a member of First Presbyterian Church in Dows, Iowa, in 1948, and later became a member at First Presbyterian Church in Greene.

Living family members include one son, Royce Echelberger of Hampton; daughter-in-law, Susan Schwieger of Florida; sister, Irene Banordin of Cedar Falls; brother, Ron and wife, Helen Peyton, of Hampton; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Daniel and Randy; three brothers, Marvin, Max and Lewis; one sister, Lucille; two husbands; and one granddaughter, Mandy Jo, in infancy.
