Richard D.
Winden
HANLONTOWN — Richard D.
Winden, 67, of
Hanlontown died Sunday
(April 24, 2005) at Muse
Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit in Mason City.
According to Richard's
wishes, a graveside
memorial service will be
held at 1:45 p.m.
Saturday at Grant Center
Cemetery, south of
Fertile, with the Rev.
Curt Gallmeyer
officiating.
There will be lunch and
a time of fellowship
following at the Church
of Christ in Fertile.
All friends and
relatives are invited to
attend and share
memories.
Visitation will begin at
1 p.m. Saturday at the
Church of Christ in
Fertile.
The family kindly
suggests memorials be
directed to Hospice of
North Iowa or to the
Church of Christ in
Fertile.
Richard Duane Winden was
born in Lake Mills,
Iowa, on Nov. 11, 1937,
the third son of Adolph
and Minnie (Bergan)
Winden. He was baptized
and confirmed at Bristol
Lutheran Church in rural
Joice. He attended
country school and
graduated from Joice
High School in 1955. He
served in the U.S. Army
for two years and in the
Army Reserves for four
years.
On June 16, 1962, he was
united in marriage to
Harriet Stokke of
Fertile at the Little
Brown Church in Nashua.
The couple moved to
Minneapolis where they
lived for a number of
years, then moved back
to Iowa.
Richard worked in
several occupations
until he found his real
"niche" in outboard
motor sales and service.
He worked at
Touristville Boats in
Clear Lake a number of
years, then bought his
own business, Manly
Motor Co. Ill health
stopped him in 1996 for
a few years. He
continued the work he
loved to do almost to
the end. He was a master
mechanic and always went
the "extra mile" for a
satisfied customer. He
enjoyed camping,
fishing, woodworking and
keeping the lawn "just
so"!
He is survived by his
wife, Harriet, of
Hanlontown; his
brothers, Marvin Winden
of Fresno, Calif., and
Wallace Winden and his
wife, Audy, of Lake
Mills; and several
nieces and nephews,
along with other
relatives and friends.
He will be sadly missed
and always remembered.
Richard was preceded in
death by his parents.

Marlynn Anne
Just
TUCSON, Ariz. —
Surrounded by her loving
family, Marlynn Anne
Just was welcomed into
the arms of the Lord on
Thursday (April 14,
2005) in Tucson,
Arizona.
With an unparalleled
zest for living, Anne
sought out that which
was best in life,
whether it be a good
restaurant, a good book,
a good shopping mall or
even a good fishing
spot. She applied this
quality to every aspect
of her life and strove
to express the inherent
value of even the
smallest things to those
around her. With
unbelievable courage,
determination and an
eternal optimism, she
literally charged
through life and could
not help but inspire
everyone who knew her.
During the holidays,
Anne would get out her
Christmas sweaters and
jewelry, and decorate
not only her home but
also her wheelchair — a
big, red bow on the back
and smaller bows with
bells on the sides!
Wherever she went,
people would stop her
and express how the site
of this decorated
wheelchair inspired them
and how she had lifted
their spirits with her
perpetual smile.
She was born on Jan. 3,
1928, to Henry and Lyla
Timmerman in Sheffield,
Iowa. She was welcomed
into this world by her
sister, Norma.
Anne was a 1945 graduate
of Sheffield High School
and attended Iowa State
Teacher's College in
Cedar Falls. She was an
enthusiastic competitor
in sports and also had a
great love of music from
an early age. High
school and college music
competitions left many
cherished memories for
Anne. She sang in
weddings, at funerals,
and was a huge fan of
the big band sounds of
her day.
Anne was united in
marriage to Adam Peter
Just on May 31, 1949.
Together they had three
children: Jamie, Tim and
Rob. She actively
participated in their
education and
extracurricular
activities including the
Band Mothers Club, PTO
and Girl Scouts. Raising
children in the 50s and
60s was made a little
easier as her sister,
Norma, and family were
right next door and
always there to lend a
loving hand.
She worked hard to see
that her children would
succeed in life and was
always there with words
of encouragement,
glowing praise or
staunch support. She
shared her husband's
love of gardening,
hunting and fishing and
these activities
generated so many fond
memories and countless
amusing stories. Fresh
garden vegetables
gracing the table,
canning and freezing,
cut flowers throughout
the house: all
contributed to the
memories of home.
She worked in Mason City
for several years as a
saleswoman for KSMN
radio and later as
manager of Buttrey's
women's apparel.
She was an active member
of her community and
belonged to numerous
local organizations
including, Tri-S Club,
Business & Professional
Women's Club, American
Red Cross and the
American Legion
Auxiliary. She also
administered the
Community and Resource
Development (CRD)
program through the ISU
Extension Office for
several years. She was a
long-time member of
Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Rockwell and
in her later years
attended the Evangelical
United Brethren Church
in Sheffield.
Anne was an avid reader
and was quite at home in
any library. She had
library cards in three
states and a number of
cities! She instilled in
her children and
grandchildren this love
and devotion for
reading. She firmly
believed that should
this love flourish, much
of the greater things in
life would follow, and
we have all learned
first hand that this is
surely true.
Anne spent her last
years in Tucson, Ariz.,
with her loving family.
The truest love of her
life was surely her
grandchildren: Adam,
Alex, Chloe and Allie.
She was fully involved
in all of their
activities. It was not
an uncommon sight to see
her out on the
basketball court with
Adam, urging him to get
his hands up in the air
or encouraging Alex to
steal the ball. Chloe is
the family swimmer and
in the desert heat of
July, Anne would be at
the edge of the pool
screaming, "Go, Chloe,
Go." At 9 years old, it
is apparent Allie shares
her grandma's love of
music, dance and
theater, and Anne never
missed the chance to see
her recitals, plays or
talent contests. The
grandkids would always
see their grandma in the
audience, bleachers or
on the sidelines. She
was definitely their
biggest fan.
Services were held at
First United Methodist
Church in Sheffield,
Iowa, on Thursday, April
21, led by Pastor Karl
Watkins with soloist
Lois Brinkman
accompanied by Ruth
Skeries. The eulogy was
read by long-time
friend, Millie Rabie.
Interment was at
Hillside Cemetery,
Sheffield. Pallbearers
were Randy Rust of
Grimes, Joel Esslinger
of Sheffield, David Just
of Swaledale, Kevin
Baker of Coon Rapids,
Minn., and Adam and Alex
Harvey of Tucson, Ariz.
Honorary pallbearers
were Vaughn Alexander,
Warren Baker, Marlis
Oelhert Ames, Marie
Ginder Baker, Audrey
Messerschmidt Barnes,
Dorothy Persons
Buchholz, Dorothy Kramer
Deam and Lola Jacot
Yelland.
Left to cherish her
memory are daughter,
Jamie, and husband,
Brien Harvey; son, Rob
and wife, Diane;
grandsons, Adam and Alex
Harvey; and
granddaughters, Chloe
and Allie Just. She has
a sister, Norma, and
husband, Bruce Rust, in
Sheffield as well as
numerous nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Marlynn was welcomed
into heaven by her
parents, Henry and Lyla;
husband, Adam; and son,
Tim.
Memorials for Anne may

Ultimately, Ben and Dort
celebrated 65 years of
marriage together prior
to Ben's death on March
8, 2005.
Dorothy was a member of
First United Methodist
Church in Mason City and
active within the United
Methodist women's church
group.
Dorothy was a devoted
housewife, mother and
grandmother. She
regarded her family as
her highest priority and
is described by her
children as a
resourcefully creative
woman who was clever,
watchful, faithful to
her church and a loyal
friend. Dorothy
possessed a unique sense
of humor and had
overcome many health
obstacles throughout the
past years with a
positive attitude and
very little complaint.
She had a warm and
comfortable personality
and was very
knowledgeable and
accepting of
individualism.
Some of Dorothy's
favorite leisure
activities and interests
include baking, cooking
and sewing for her
family, reading, solving
crossword puzzles,
bargain shopping,
completing upholstery
projects, traveling with
Ben and drawing and
doodling. Her children
fondly recall Dorothy's
homemade pies,
especially pecan and her
homemade bread.
Dorothy also treasured
time spent with her
family in the Algona
area. Many times, she
and/or her children
traveled by train or car
to visit them or attend
a reunion. At one time
during Bob's elementary
years, Dort chaperoned
his class to Algona and
back, via train.
Dorothy's sisters
remember their older
sister as their mentor
and second mother. She
assisted them in
preparing for the school
day, offering advice on
living life day to day,
making "something"
creations out of little
of nothing material, and
washing and styling
their hair in the latest
fashion.
In Dort's later years,
the care of her husband
and her interests
involving her
grandchildren and
great-grandson's daily
milestones were her
greatest source of pride
and joy.
She will be sadly missed
by her granddaughters
and grandsons: Rebecca
(Jeff) Karen and their
son, Evan Karen, Joseph
Miller, Saul Miller,
Kary Miller, Cindi
Miller, Ty Cobb and Bree
Cobb.
Also surviving Dorothy
are her children:
William K. ‘Bill' (Lois)
Miller of Sharon, Mass.,
Robert C. ‘Bob' (Mary)
Miller of Mason City,
and Barbara J. ‘Barb'
(Bill) Cobb of Ames; her
sisters: Eleanor Brandow
and Lois (Bill) Dau,
both of Algona; and her
brothers: Virgil
(Bernice) Fraser of New
York and Harlan Fraser
of Tennessee.
Dorothy was preceded by
her husband, Bernard Z.
‘Ben' Miller; her
parents, Joseph A. and
Mildred M. Fraser; her
sister, Phyllis
Tibbetts; her brothers:
Verl F. Fraser, Ronald
W. Fraser, Robert A.
Fraser, Lewis E. Fraser
and Larry Fraser; her
sisters-in-law: Ellen
Fraser and Sally Fraser,
and her brothers-in-law:
Charles Tibbetts and
Ellsworth Brandow.
