Edward
Laurence Sjölinder
MASON CITY — Edward
Laurence Sjölinder, 77,
passed away Monday
(April 4, 2005) at Mercy
Medical Center North
Iowa. Memorial services
will be held at 4 p.m.
Sunday in the Masonic
Temple Red Room, 302 1st
St. S.E. The service is
open to the public.
Private family inurnment
services will take place
in Memorial Park
Cemetery, Grand Forks,
N.D., at a later date.
There will be no
visitation.
Memorials may be given
in memory of Edward
Sjölinder to the donor's
choice of recipient.
Edward was born Sept.
25, 1927, to Esther
(Swenson) and Laurence
Sjölinder in East Grand
Forks, N.D. He grew up
appreciating the close
and loving family of
grandparents, aunts and
uncles as a major
influence in his life.
He was baptized in
Augustana Lutheran
Church, Grand Forks, by
his grandfather, Pastor
Laurent E. Sjölinder,
who had been the first
pastor of that church.
Edward remained true to
the Evangelical Lutheran
Faith throughout his
life.
After his 1945
graduation as
valedictorian of his
class from Central High
School in East Grand
Forks, he entered the
University of North
Dakota at Grand Forks
and was able to attend
sporadically. That
education was
interrupted by two
separate tours of duty
in the United States
Army, one of which was
proudly served in Korea.
He did complete his
university work and
graduated in 1957 with a
degree in electrical
engineering, providing
him the education to do
what he felt was his
greatest professional
contribution — serving
as a field engineer in
various
aerospace-related
divisions of the General
Motors Corp. during the
years of preparation for
the Apollo Mission to
the moon.
After retiring from
General Motors, he moved
to Mason City and
partnered with Bill
Austin in purchasing an
electric motor repair
business, which closed
in 1992. Ed had been an
active member of the
North Iowa Ham Radio
group until his
involvement with the
"smart machine"
(computer) overshadowed
much of his radio
activity. However, he
remained interested and
supportive of ham radio
usage.
He was a 50-year Mason
and a member of Harding
Lodge No. 649, serving
as Worshipful Master two
times. He also served as
Junior Grand Deacon of
the Grand Lodge of Iowa
in 1999-2000. He was a
member of Unity Chapter
of the Order of Eastern
Star, Alchor Shrine No.
6, and Order of the
White Shrine of
Jerusalem, which
recently elected him to
the position of
Associate Watchmen of
Shepherds for the
2005-2006 year.
A clarinet and saxophone
player, Ed truly
appreciated Big Band
music and enjoyed
science fiction in any
form, hot fudge sundaes
and hot beef sandwiches.
Survivors include his
three children, Jackie
(Larry) Brage of Stevens
Point, Wis., John
(Debra) Sjölinder of
Mason City; Tracie
(David) Fenske of Eagan,
Minn.; granddaughters,
Katie, Summer and Amy
Brage, and Erin

Sjölinder; uncles,

and Anthony Sjölinder;

Dwight was born Jan. 26,
1956, the son of Robert
E. and Rose Marie
(Berglund) Wirtz in
Boone, Iowa. He attended
school in Ogden,
graduating from Ogden
Community High School in
1974. Dwight graduated

Rembrant and Lake City
before joining the staff
at the Clear Lake High
School where he taught
English and Speech for
nearly 20 years. He also
directed plays and was
involved in speech
contests with the

Dwight's teaching career
illustrated his desire
to help young people and
his feelings on the
importance of education.
One retired co-worker
said, "Dwight was
capable of teaching the
higher grades, but
remained teaching the
freshman year. He took
the rowdy and unready
and prepared them to
finish a proper
education."
Dwight was an active
member of the National
Education Association.
His teaching career
echoed his true passion:
the theater. Dwight
began his theater career
in high school and had
several major roles in
college productions.
Dwight was very active
in the Mason City
Community Theatre,
wearing many hats as
actor, director, board
member and past
president. He recently
received the Calvin
Award for outstanding
contributions in the

Theatre.
Dwight broadened his
talents into the
culinary arts. He
enjoyed preparing and
serving gourmet dishes
for his family and
friends. Dwight also had
a rich taste for fine
music and literature.
Dwight will be dearly
missed by family and his
large network of friends
all over the world.

his father, Robert Wirtz
and partner, Eleanore
Redmon, of Ogden;

Furleigh farm in Clear
Lake, Iowa, to Sibert
and Rose (Howard) Shoop.
She was the youngest of
four children.
In country school near
Klemme, she taught
herself to knit and to
play the piano. Her mom
and the 4-H Club taught
her to cook and sew for
herself and for others.
In 1956 she married Rudy
J. Nutz. This union
produced four children:
Christina, Tom, Tim and
Ted. They farmed near
Racine and Dexter, Minn.

but then later joined an
organization similar to

near Penny and her
family. Her failing
health forced her to
retire. Her most
enjoyable times were
with her family members.

games on the computer.

Odin Harris Johnson was
born in Rake on the
family farm, March 20,
1911, to parents
Gustave and Susan (Ryg)
Johnson. He was baptized
and confirmed at Lincoln
Lutheran Church in Rake.
Odin was a member of the
second graduating class
of Rake High School in
1930. He went on to
attend Waldorf College,
where he studied
bookkeeping, typing and
commercial law.
Following his schooling,
Odin and his brother,
Sidney, purchased the
family business,
Johnson's Meat Market,
from their father in
Rake. He worked there
until he was drafted
into the United States
Army in 1941. He was
released later that
year, only to re-enter
later to serve during
World War II.
During the war, Odin
served with the 6th
Medical Battalion as a
surgical technician and
spent time in the
Hawaiian Islands, New
Guinea and the
Philippines. He was
honorably discharged on
Nov. 10, 1945, and
received the Good
Conduct Medal and the
American Defense Service
Ribbon. Upon returning
to Rake, Odin resumed
his work of providing
quality meats for the
people of the Rake area
until his retirement in
1975.
On March 1, 1958, Odin
was united in marriage
with Lillian Thompson
Russ at Zion Lutheran
Church. He was welcomed
into the family by
Lillian's children and
baby granddaughter. He
and Lillian enjoyed
watching their family
grow. They liked to
travel and took several
trips throughout the
United States and
Canada.
Odin loved Rake and was
a great source of
information about the
history of the town. He
served on the committee
which prepared the
history book for Rake's
Diamond Jubilee in 1975.
He was a very active and
faithful member of Zion
Lutheran Church, serving
in various capacities.
He was instrumental in
translating the early
Rake Church records from
Norwegian to English.
During his retirement
years, he worked as
assistant librarian at
the Rake Library, did
the bookkeeping for
several small businesses
and served as a
volunteer driver for
many senior citizens.
Odin had a great love of
learning. He taught
himself to use the
computer when in his
70s. He loved to read,
and after losing his
sight to macular
degeneration, he
continued to absorb
information by listening
to books on tape daily.
He enjoyed visiting
about any subject, and
because of his amazing
ability to retain
information, continued
to pass his knowledge
along to the people he
talked with until the
very end of his life.
Odin took great delight
in his family and was
always eager for news
about their lives. One
of his greatest joys was
being
great-great-grandpa to
two little boys.
In 1998, Odin and
Lillian moved to St.
