Fredrick W. Bruce

SWALEDALE — Fredrick William Bruce, 71, of Swaledale, passed away Saturday (March 26, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City with his family at his side.

Memorial services will be held 5 p.m. Saturday at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, 107 N. Second St. in Thornton, with burial at a later date in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Swaledale.

Fred, the son of George and Alice (Frenz) Shuler was born in Hampton on March 14, 1934. He is the stepson  of Lyle Bruce. Fred attended Plymouth School and was confirmed at the Lutheran church in Plymouth. Fred served in the Army for six years. He was a staff sergeant.

On March 29, 1956, Fred married Geneva Coggins in Washington, D.C., then Fred was sent overseas to Korea. The couple lived in Manly, Rockford, Pacifica, Calif., Clear Lake, and finally made their home near Swaledale. To this union several children were born.

Fred spent 35 years working for Henkel Construction before retiring. He enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, traveling, bird watching and being with his children and grandchildren. Fred hand-built a houseboat using an old military hull. He named the boat the "Miss Nellie Mae" and has taken it to Clear Lake several times.

Fred is survived by his wife, Geneva, of Swaledale; son, Russel and wife, Sarah, Northwood, grandchildren, Danny and Matthew; son, David and special friend, Rachel, Mason City, grandchildren, Jennifer, Destiny, Brandon and special friend, Nicole, with great-grandson, Colton; daughter, Kimberly Storm, Rockwell, grandchildren, Nikki and Amber; son, Bob and wife, Nancy, of Swaledale; and son, Chris, of Swaledale.

Also surviving is his sister-in-law, Natalie Shuler, of Redding, Calif., brother, Charles Bruce, and his wife, Diane, of Palo Cedro, Calif.; brother, Robert Shuler, of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; sister, Marjay Shuler, of California; special aunt, Mae Frenz, of Mason City; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents; son, Doug; infant daughter, Judy Lynn; and brother, Roy Shuler.

Oscar ‘Jim' Olson


GARNER — Oscar James Olson, 80, of Garner died Wednesday (March 30, 2005) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

His memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church  in Garner with the  Rev. Henry Friedrich officiating. Inurnment will be in Concord Township Cemetery, Garner.  

Military rites will be conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the church on Saturday.

Memorials may be directed to the Oscar "Jim" Olson Memorial Fund.

Oscar James Olson, the son of Oscar and Anna (Gansveld) Olson, was born May 3, 1924,  at Britt. He graduated from Britt High School in 1943. After graduation, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served his country in the medical detachment of the 496th Quartermaster Battalion in the European Theater during World War II. Following his honorable discharge on Nov. 10, 1945, he returned home to Britt to continue his education at Britt Junior College.

On July 8, 1968, he married Elaine (Ashland) Wreghitt at Sioux Falls, S.D. Jim was employed as a measurement technician for Northern Natural Gas in Ventura for more than 30 years, retiring in 1983.

He enjoyed fishing, golfing and playing softball in church league.

He was a member of  St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served as a trustee. He also was a member of the Edwin Jante VFW Post No. 5515.

Jim is survived by his wife, Elaine, of Garner; seven children: Jean Elliott of Brown Deer, Wis., Barbara Schiller of McHenry, Ill., Deborah Olson of May City, Jennifer (Chris) Golien of Clear Lake, James (Barbara) Olson of Belgium, Wis., Roger (Cathy) Olson of Vero Beach, Fla., and Bill (Lori) Wreghitt of Ventura; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four sisters: Betty Lowe of Mason City, Arlene Schutjer of Mason City, Marjorie Halfpop of Belmond, and Marcella (George) Krambeer of Shellsburg; two brothers: Kenneth (Charlotte) Olson of Mason City, and Merrill (Frieda) Olson of Britt;  a sister-in-law, Shirley Olson, of Britt; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Roger Schiller; sister, Bonnie Olson; brother, Robert Olson; sister-in-law, Jeannette Ashland Caspers; and brothers-in-law, J.C. Lowe, Kenneth Schutjer, Lloyd Halfpop and Robert Ashland.

Arthur L. Skram


MASON CITY — Arthur L. Skram, 80, of Mason City died Tuesday (March 29, 2005) at Mercy Medical  Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services for Arthur will be held at 10:30 a.m.  Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. James Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be given  to the Arthur L. Skram Memorial Fund or to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Arthur L. Skram was born May 23, 1924, in Grafton, the son of Peder and Emma (Sorenson) Skram. He graduated from Kensett High School in 1942. Arthur attended Waldorf College until drafted into the United States Army Air Corps, where he served with the 20th Air Force in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II.

Art married Marcile Mostrom on Aug. 4, 1946, and they established their first home in Kensett. The family moved to Mason City after he founded the Art Skram Music Co. in 1950. The company was one of the first in the state of Iowa to provide background music, paging and sound equipment systems to businesses. He later opened a real estate and professional farm management office, overseeing Northwestern States Portland Cement and Indianhead Farms. He was widely known as a farm realtor and appraiser.

Art was a longtime member of the Chamber of Commerce, serving many years on the agriculture committee. He was also a member of both the National and Iowa Farm and Land Brokers Associations. Art was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on numerous church boards. He belonged to the Mason City Country Club, the Eucher and Cycle Club, and volunteered time to help youth at the YMCA.

Art was especially proud  of his Norwegian heritage and enjoyed many trips to Norway to visit family and friends. He would always have time to tell about his affection for the good times he had vacationing in Norway. He also enjoyed collecting model planes and trains, spending time at his summer home on Clear Lake and working at his farms. Art was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

He is survived by his wife, Marcile; daughter, Mary Ann (Robert) Reddall of Cedar Rapids; son, Paul (Betty) of Cedar Rapids; four beloved grandchildren: Jennifer (James) Gonsalves, Stephen Skram and fiancee, Brooke Runyan, John Reddall and special friend, Elizabeth Whipple, and Kristin Reddall; one cherished sister, Phyllis (Truman) Knudtson; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary Lou A. Mann


CLEAR LAKE — Mary Lou A. Mann, 78, 405 27th Ave. S., Clear Lake, died Wednesday (March 30, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday  at Galilean Lutheran Church, Highway 18 W., Clear Lake, with the  Rev. Jeff Ungs officiating.

Visitation with the  family will start at 12:30 p.m. at the church. According to her wishes, her body has been cremated.

Inurnment will be Monday, April 4, 10 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa for the Hospice Garden.

Mary Lou was born Sept. 22, 1926, in Schleswig, Iowa, the daughter of Nicolaus and Clara (Tamm) Hollander. She attended school in Schleswig and Denison, Iowa. She worked in Sioux City.

Mary Lou married Ralph E. Mann, on May 10, 1947, in Seneca, Kan. They lived in Sioux City and later moved to LeMars in 1963. They moved to Clear Lake in 1968.

Mary Lou worked at Johnson Paint and Gift in Clear Lake. In 1973, she went to work for the North Iowa Medical Center and Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa as a unit clerk, retiring in 1990. After retiring, she worked with families doing home health care.

She loved gardening, flowers and playing cards. She enjoyed going to the Senior Citizen's Center and road trips to apple orchards. Mary Lou loved her dog, Annie. Her church was very important in her life. The overall joy of her life was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchild. Mary Lou was a member of Galilean Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Mary Lou is survived by her two children: Michael Mann, Denison, and Cindy Brattrud and her husband, Jeff, Clear Lake; three grandchildren: Nicole Mann, Omaha, Neb., Joshua Mann, Chicago, Ill., and Dain Mann, Ventura; one great-grandchild, Cayden Brager; and two sisters: Betty and Ernestine.

Mary Lou was preceded  in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph Mann (Sept. 16, 1987); one brother, Edward; one sister, Anna Marie, and an infant son.

Mildred A. Adams


MASON CITY — Mildred A. Adams, 93, died early Wednesday morning (March 30, 2005) at the IOOF Home.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church Wayside Chapel, 119 S. Georgia, with the Rev. Jim Stiles of First United Methodist Church officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service  in Wayside Chapel. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Mildred A. Adams Memorial Fund.

Mildred was born to Carl and Sarah (Anderson) Stewart on March 22, 1912, in Earlham, Iowa. She attended Mason City Schools and graduated from Mason City High School. She then attended and graduated from Hamilton School of Business.

She was married to Reese Adams on June 6, 1946, in Mason City, and they were happily married for more than 50 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son, Gordon Dye and wife, Betty, of Mason City; daughter, Jacqueline Mansfield and husband, Dennis, of New Caney, Texas; grandchildren, Kevin Mansfield, Todd Mansfield, Julie Asbe, Sheryl Arndt, Dan Dye, Paul Dye, Mark Dye, and Gordon Dye Jr.; great-grandchildren, Erin, Eric, Mike, Courtney, Cole, Whitney, Colby, Brooklyn, Evan and Montgomery; great-great-grandchildren, Hunter and Allegra; sister, Maxine Lilley, of Cottage Grove, Ore.; and brother, Burdette Stewart, of Kansas City, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Albert Dye, father of Gordon, and Arthur Booth, father of Jacqueline Mansfield, and Reece Adams; parents; and brother, Howard Stewart.

John C. ‘Jack' Bailey


SUN CITY WEST, ARIZ. — John C. "Jack" Bailey, 75, died Wednesday (March 30, 2005) in Sun City West, Ariz., where he has been a resident since retiring there from Iowa in 1997.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Desert Garden United Church.

John C. "Jack" was born  on Feb. 27, 1930, to Roy and Dorothy Bailey in Osage. The family later moved to Mason City, where he attended school. He attended the University of Iowa and was a graduate of the Michigan State University Institute of Organization Management and the Academy for Organization Management of the University of Notre Dame. He was a U.S. Air Force Reservist and served on active duty 34 months during the Korean conflict. During his career, he spent 20 years with the Chamber of Commerce of the United States as district manager for the mountain states, and then New York, was manager of the northwest division-Minneapolis and of the southwest region-Dallas. Upon re-tiring from the U.S. Chamber, he became the president of the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce. He returned to Iowa as the Director of the Department of Economic Development. In 1987, he became president of the Iowa Area Development Group, a multi-faceted business development organization of member-owned electric utilities.

Throughout his career, he served as a member and officer on many significant boards   and organizations. He recently completed 16 years on the Board of Directors with Delta Dental Plans of Iowa. In 1973, he was elected mayor of the city of Minnetonka, Minn.,  and was re-elected for a second term. Prior to retirement, he was a recipient of the International Food and Energy Councils Distinguished Service Award for Added Value Agriculture. Since moving to Arizona, he has served as chairman of the Arizona Winter Visitors Association, president of the Sun City West Kiwanis Club, vice president of the Sun Health Axillary, and president of Sun City's Royal Order of Jesters Billiken Club. He was also a member of Marshall Masonic Lodge No. 108 in Marshalltown, Iowa, Scottish Rite,  Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and Royal Order of Jesters Court 17. He belonged to the Sun City West Iowa Club and was a member of Desert Garden United Church.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley; daughter, Carolyn and her husband, David; and grandchildren, Sean and Cristin, all of Fort Collins, Colo.; also an brother, Robert J. Bailey, and wife, Colleen in Bellevue, Wash.; sister-in-law, Alice Bailey of Mason City; and many nephews and nieces, all of whom he dearly loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Richard L. Bailey and Dr. Jerry A. Bailey.

Marcia A. Thill


ALGONA — Marcia Ann Thill, 74, died Wednesday (March 30, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Benedict Catholic Church in St. Benedict with the Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Burial will be in St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona where a C.D. of A. rosary will be held at 5 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m.

Marcia Ann Thill was born on Nov. 20, 1930, at Algona to James Orville "Skinny" and Leona Raskopf Downs. She received her early education at   St. Benedict and graduated from LuVerne High School in LuVerne. Marcia graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City. She then worked as a secretary for Household Finance in Mason City.

On April 7, 1953, Marcia was married to Harold Thill at St. Benedict Catholic Church. The couple lived west of St. Benedict, where Harold farmed. Marcia kept busy raising their six children. After her children were grown, she worked at Damon's Too and Miss T's in Algona. She retired due to failing health.

Marcia was an active member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, where she was a charter member of the St. Benedict C. D. of A. and was a member of the Ladies' Guild. She also was active in the Garrigan Music Boosters, when her children were in school. Marcia enjoyed crossword puzzles, sewing and cross stitch, but her greatest joys in life were visiting with her many friends and being with her family and spoiling her grandchildren.

Marcia is survived by her husband, Harold, of rural Algona; and her children, Jeff Thill and wife, Deb, Britt, Jonathan (Jody) Thill, Des Moines, Todd Thill and wife, Ruth, Britt, Tracy Nolte and husband, Larry, Garden City, Jason Thill and wife, Tina, Dawson, and Erin Blankenburg and husband, Charley, Fort Dodge. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Darrell Downs and wife, Doris, Marcus, Iowa; and one sister, Nancy Blau and husband, Duane, Granger, Ind.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Grady Blankenburg; one brother, Tommy Downs; and one sister, Mary Margaret Downs.

Delia A. Erdmann


OSAGE — Delia A. Erdmann, age 90, of Osage, died Thursday (March 31, 2005) at Faith Home in Osage.

Delia was born Jan. 28, 1915, in Platte, S.D., the daughter of William and Agnes (Quinn) Overkamp. Delia's mother died when  she was small, after which she came to live in Osage with her grandparents, William and Anna Overkamp. She graduated from Osage High School, then attended business college in Waterloo.

On Sept. 20, 1940, Delia married Harold W. Erdmann, in Platte, S.D. Harold and Delia started the Motor Inn garage in Osage. Starting in 1968, Delia worked as an assistant to the Osage City Clerk. She became city clerk in 1973 and held that position until she retired in 1987. Delia not only served the city in her job, but also dearly loved the town and citizens of Osage. Delia was very active at attending social events around town. She was also a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Osage.

Visitation is from to 2 to  4 p.m. Sunday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

She is survived by two daughters: Laurie Erdmann Martin of St. Ansgar and Julie Erdmann of San Diego, Calif.; one granddaughter, Tara D. Martin of Tacoma, Wash.; two great-grandchildren: Marshun and Delayna Martin of Tacoma, Wash.; and one sister-in-law, Ruby Erdmann of Osage.

She was preceded by her grandparents; her parents; her husband, Harold W. Erdmann in 1990; and a brother, Patrick Overkamp,

MASON CITY — Bryce Matthew Sorensen, newborn son of Conni Sorensen, died Sunday (March 27, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services for Bryce will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Spencer Thury of Riverside Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from1:30 p.m. until the time of service on Monday at the funeral home.

Bryce is survived by his mother, Conni Sorensen; big brother, Noah Ziemann; grandson of Julie Holding and husband, Joseph, and Don Sorensen; nephew of: Tony Sorensen, and Chad and Susanne Holding all of Mason City; great-grandson of Thorvald Sorensen of Plymouth, Roy and Shirley Newcomb of Spencer, Carl and Laurine Holding; and many other family members.

David K. Rusley


SIOUX CITY — David Kurt Rusley, 48, of Sioux City, died Sunday (March 27, 2005) in Colton, Calif., of cancer.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice with the  Rev. Kevin L. Mackey officiating. Interment will take place at Concordia Cemetery in Concordia.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. A prayer service officiated by the Rev. Craig Bock will take place starting at 7 p.m.

David was born Nov. 15, 1956, in Albert Lea, Minn., and attended Sioux City East, graduating in 1975. He also attended the University of Northern Iowa, graduating in 1979. On Dec. 16, 1983, he was united in marriage to Molly McGuire in Sioux City, they later divorced.

He resided in Joice for 13 years and the rest of his life in Sioux City. He was the former owner/manager of The Corner Pocket & Mystix in Sioux City for 16 years. He was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church.

He was active in many  city pool leagues, sponsored numerous Rivercade activities, enjoyed playing cards, reading, hunting and golfing.

David's survivors include his mother, Beatrice Mae (Nelson) Young of Sioux City; daughters, Melanie and Maureen Rusley of Sioux City; sons, Tyler Rusley of Sioux City, and Justin Rusley of St. Francis, Minn.; a granddaughter, Kiera Lias of Sioux City; step-father, Darrell Young of Sioux City; sisters, Joyce (Ronald) Dammer of Rochester, Minn., and Marta (Wayne) Rusley-Parker of Jonesboro, Ark.; step-sisters, Crystal (Dennis) Benson of Sioux City and Cynthia (Michael) Stodden of Omaha, Neb.; step-brother, Daniel (Christine) Young of Omaha, Neb.; grandmother, Alma Cleven of Iowa City; several cousins and other family members as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Jerome Rusley; grandfathers, Norris Nelson and Oscar Rusley; and grandmother, Christine (Rusley) Jensen.

CHARLES CITY — Ellen Gates, 90, of Charles City, died Thursday (March 31, 2005) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Ellen Gates will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Pastor Ruth Yeaton, of the First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in West Side Cemetery, Marble Rock.

Henry ‘Buster' W. Maass


GREENE — Henry William Maass, 89, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Greene, died Tuesday (March 29, 2005) at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, with Pastor Gary Hatcher of St. Peter Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel and will continue one hour before services on Saturday.

LEDYARD — Frances Karen ‘Fran' Knoner, 60, died Wednesday (March 30, 2005) at her home in Ledyard.

A funeral service will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m.  at Bethany E & R Church, Ledyard, with the Rev. Doug Van Der Pol officiating. Burial will be in Highland Home Cemetery, Ledyard.

Visitation will be from 3  to 7 p.m. Sunday at Bethany E & R Church, Ledyard, and will continue one hour prior to the service on Monday.

STACYVILLE — Joseph Hoffman, 91, of Stacyville died on Thursday (March 31, 2005) at Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, Iowa.

GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — Col. Lyle S. McCabe, USMC (Ret.), 81, of Germantown, Tenn., formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday (March 31, 2005) at Methodist University Hospital of Memphis.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual   Help Catholic Church, Germantown, Tenn., with the Rev. Wayne Ressler officiating. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, at Memphis Funeral Home-Poplar Chapel of Memphis, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Col. McCabe was born Feb. 29, 1924, in LaCrosse, Wis., the son of Stephen A. and Olga McCabe. He married Margaret Gruesen on June 18, 1949, in Duluth, Minn.

He grew up and graduated from Central High School in Duluth, Minn. He then attended St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minn., until enlisting in the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in November 1942. He graduated from flight school and was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the South Pacific during World War II and in the Korean conflict.

Col. McCabe was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Gold Star, the Air Medal with Gold Star, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Navy Unit Citation, and theater ribbons. He retired from the Marine Corps as a colonel with 32 years of service.

He graduated from the University of Minnesota and worked for Federated Insurance Co., of Owatonna, Minn. After retiring from Federated, he became the safety director for Cerro Gordo County in Mason City, Iowa.

He was elected to the Mason City Park and Recreation Board and served one term as chairman.

He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman.

He was a life member of the third-and fourth-degree Knights of Columbus of Germantown, the BPO Elks of Memphis and VFW Post No. 733, of Mason City.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of Germantown; four daughters: Maureen Bidasolo, of Sisters, Ore., Colleen McCabe-Bricklin, of New York, Kathleen (Trinka) McCabe-Sterland, of Gilbert, Ariz., and Margaret Fulcher, Carson City, Nev., and two sons: Stephen A. McCabe, Germantown, Tenn., and Patrick L. McCabe, Broomfield, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; two sisters: Kathleen Dupont, Cloquet, Minn., and Ruth Eide, Granada Hills, Calif.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Michael and Joseph, and by his parents.

Gordon W. Blanchard


SIOUX CITY — Gordon W. Blanchard, 90, of Sioux City and formerly of Mason City, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (March 29, 2005) at Mercy Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, 3220 Stone Park Blvd. in Sioux City, with the Rev. Michael Zabel officiating.

Family and friends are invited to attend burial services at 1 p.m. today in Elmwood Cemetery in Waterloo. They may also visit with the family at the Lindgren home in Waterloo after the burial.

Gordon Blanchard was born on Sept. 2, 1914, in Lone Rock, Iowa, the son of Jesse and Maude (Whitehill) Blanchard. He graduated from Lone Rock High School in 1930. Gordon attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, graduating in 1937. He was a pitcher for the ISTC baseball team, attaining the highest collegiate batting average and earning the MVP award for the team in 1936.

Gordon married Ardys K. Smith on Jan. 1, 1938, in Waterloo. He taught school in Olin and Nora Springs before coming to the YMCA in 1946. He served as physical director and executive director at the WMCA in Mason City working there for 20 years. While at the Y, he started family parties, bridge tournaments and elementary school Gray-Y sports program. He was  a member of the Lions Club for 40 years, where he served as president and was secretary of the club for 40 years.

Gordon was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Little Rock and later in Mason City, where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher. His faith was very important to him and he lived to the fullest the teachings of Christ.

Gordon looked forward to the start of the baseball season every year and enjoyed the Cubs, Twins and Braves. He also enjoyed playing cribbage and bridge as well as family trips to California and Okoboji.

Gordon was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ardys, in October 2003.

Survivors include three daughters: Barbara Williams and her husband, George, of Huntington Beach, Calif., Kathie Anderson and her husband, Tom, of Sioux City, and Jeanie Lindgren and her husband, Tim, of Waterloo; two brothers: Gene Blanchard of Omaha, Neb., and Jesse Blanchard of Hot Springs, Ark.; one sister, Doris Schultz of Lone Rock; eight grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.

Gordon was a kind and loving father, grandfather, brother, husband and friend who will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

OSAGE — Justin Royal Ones, 83, of Osage, died Thursday (March 31, 2005) at the Mitchell Country Regional Health Center-Hospice Unit in Osage.

Justin Royal Ones was born to Iver John Ones and Rhoda Olive (Fods) Ones on Nov.16, 1921, in Rock Township, Mitchell County, Iowa. He was baptized on Feb. 14, 1922, by Pastor O.C. Myhre of Rock Creek Lutheran Church. He was instructed in the Lutheran faith by Pastor O.C. Myhre of Rock Creek Lutheran Church and confirmed on May 31, 1936, where he was a lifetime member. He received his elementary education at Rock No. 7 rural school, Rock Township. On Nov. 20, 1949, he was united in marriage with Clara Kroneman, of rural Grafton, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Township. They were married for 55 years. They were blessed with two sons: Jerry and Laird. He served in various organizations of the church and was a 4-H leader for many years. Justin was a farmer. He also worked as a carpenter for Andrew Gemaelich for nine years and for Olsen Implement for 17 years. They continued living on the family farm where he was born. After retiring, he and Clara worked on many woodworking projects. They also enjoyed going to dances. In June 1992, they moved to Osage.

Survivors include his wife Clara of Osage; two sons: Jerry Ones of Frederic, Wis., and Laird Ones of Osage; three grandchildren: Angie Ones and friend, Dan Mortenson, of Frederic, Wis., Jessica (Ryan) Tollander of Siren, Wis., and Jeremy (Renee) Ones of Frederic, Wis.; five great-grandchildren: Jaryd and Jori Braden, Macy and Morgan Tollander, and Benjamin Justin Ones; two sisters: Truly Flaaten of Kensett and Winnie Ones of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Birchard Ones of Pueblo, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Garda Ones of Mason City; a brother-in-law, Ezra Tebben of Edwardsville, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY — Wilma Wegener, 88, of Mason City, formerly of Rock Falls, died Wednesday (March 30, 2005) at her home in Mason City.

Wilma Wegener was born on Oct. 13, 1916, in Eubank, Ky., the daughter of Lawrence F. and Minnie (Ware) Brown. She attended schools in Kentucky and Rock Falls, graduating from Rock Falls High School. She was united in marriage to Harold O. "Pete" Wegener on June 20, 1937, in Mason City. He preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 1993. For many years, Wilma and her husband, Pete, owned and operated Wegener's Grocery Store in Rock Falls, and later the Rock Falls Lounge until their retirement.

She enjoyed fishing up north, and restoring furniture and antiques.

She was a member of Old Stone United Methodist Church in Rock Falls, and the Eagles in Mason City.

Left to cherish her memory is a daughter, Nancy Wegener, of Mason City; two sisters: Velma Collier of Williamstown, Ky., and Wanda Peter of Mason City; seven nieces: Dorothy Link of Corinth, Ky., Kristie Peter of Nora Springs, Patti Peter of Nora Springs, Cheryl Hafften of Moundsview, Minn., Chereen Norstrud of Brooklyn Center, Minn., Shelia Ponce of Manly, and Shelly Stolten- berg of Albuquerque, N.M.; four nephews: Bill Collier of Dry Ridge, Ky., Jim Brown of Las Vegas, Nev., Jerry Brown of Memphis, Tenn., and Steve Brown of Las Vegas, Nev.; three sisters-in-law: Shirley Brown of Mason City, Joan Cerney of Mason City, and Pearl Wegener of Mason City; as well as other relatives and friends.

MASON CITY — Mildred A. Adams, 93, died early Wednesday morning (March 30, 2005) at the IOOF Home.

Mildred was born to Carl and Sarah (Anderson) Stewart on March 22, 1912, in Earlham, Iowa. She attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason City High School. She then attended and graduated from Hamilton School of Business.

She was married to Reese Adams on June 6, 1946, in Mason City, and they were happily married for more than 50 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son, Gordon Dye and wife, Betty, of Mason City; daughter, Jacqueline Mansfield and husband, Dennis, of New Caney, Texas; grandchildren: Kevin Mansfield, Todd Mansfield, Julie Asbe, Sheryl Arndt, Dan Dye, Paul Dye, Mark Dye and Gordon Dye Jr.; great-grandchildren: Erin, Eric, Mike, Courtney, Cole, Whitney, Colby, Brooklyn, Evan, Montgomery, Amanda, Christopher, Heide, and Heather; great-great-grandchildren: Hunter, and Allegra; sister, Maxine Lilley, of Cottage Grove, Ore.; and brother, Burdette Stewart, of Kansas City, Kan.

Ellen Louise Melugin Gates was born June 24, 1914, at Marble Rock, the daughter of William and Myrtie (Keith) Melugin. She graduated from Marble Rock High School. On June 24, 1944, she was united in marriage to Darrow Gates at Charles City. Darrow died in 1957. Ellen worked in various restaurants and as a housekeeper for a number of years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, American Legion Auxiliary and Eastern Star. Ellen enjoyed fishing, baking and working crossword puzzles.

Living family members include a son, D. Blaine Gates of Mason City; two grandchildren: David (Kathy) Gates and Jennifer (John) Bennington; five great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: Shirley Melugin of Fredericksburg and Margaret Majewski of Greene; and several nieces and nephews.

BELMOND — Henry  Carolus, 91, of Belmond passed away Friday (April 1, 2005) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services for Henry Carolus will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Belmond United Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Burial will be in Belmond Cemetery.

Henry, the son of Albert and Dorothy Mussle Carolus, was born November 9, 1913, in Klemme. He grew up and attended school in Klemme.

On April 5, 1935, Henry was united in marriage with Julane Osheim of Thompson. The couple would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on Tuesday.

The family made their home and farmed in the Galt, Clarion, Garner and Goodell area. Following their retirement from farming, they moved to an acreage north of Belmond. Henry was employed at Winnebago Industries until retiring in 1979. He became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in 2000.

Henry enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, tending his garden, fishing and sitting in his swing on the acreage watching the cars. He enjoyed playing cards until the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife, Julane; sons: Jerry Carolus and Jean, of Hampton, Del Carolus and Dorothy, of Waterloo; daughter Diane Dougherty and Ron of Ankeny; eight grandchildren: Jerilyn Kapp and Kole, of Rockingham, N.C., Jaci Sinclair and Mike of Marshalltown, Jay Carolus and Sheila, of Oskaloosa, Darin Carolus and Nancy, of Reno, Nevada, Colin Carolus and Jenny, of Waterloo, Grant Carolus and Holly, of Waterloo, Jen Eddleman and Joel, of West Des Moines, Jill Sears and Todd, of Overland Park, Kan.; nineteen great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Esther Carolus, of Clarion, and numerous nieces and nephews.

BELMOND — Grace J. Kalkwarf, 102, of Belmond passed away Thursday (March 31, 2005) at the Concord Care Center of Garner.

Grace Johanna Kalkwarf was born March 19, 1903, to John P. and Johanna Frey Pals on a farm southwest of Meservey. As an infant, Grace was baptized at the First Reformed Church in Meservey. When she was a young lady, Grace graduated from Heidelberg Catechism and became a faithful member of the First Reformed Church. She attended rural school and attained an eighth-grade education. She continued to work on the family farm.

On Christmas Day, December 25, 1925, Grace was united in marriage with Dick Kalkwarf at the Meservey First Reformed Church Parsonage. The couple farmed in the Alexander and Belmond area for many years.

In 1952, they retired and moved to a new home in Belmond. Together they enjoyed fishing and their many trips to Minnesota lakes, and playing cards with their many friends and relatives.

Following retirement, Grace enjoyed her new hobbies of bowling and made many state bowling trips with other women bowlers and golfing. In her honor, the Belmond Country Club Association named one day a year the "Grace Kalkwarf Day." She loved to play any kind of cards and played for the Belmond Hospital Auxiliary for many years. Grace crocheted many doilies over the years and gave her beautiful handiwork away as gifts to family and friends. In later years, she also began tatting doilies.

In November of 1999, she moved to the Belmond Community Apartments taking part in many activities there.

Due to ill health, Grace entered Concord Care Center in Garner in August of 2004, where she passed away on March 31, 2005.

Since moving to Belmond, Grace has been a member of the Belmond United Methodist Church. She will be remembered for her love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Grace leaves us with a legacy of unconditional giving and steadfast love and commitment to her family. She is dearly loved and will be missed.

The family wishes to thank the Belmond Hospital, Concord Care Center in Garner, the Hospice volunteers for their excellent support and care given to our loved one.

Dwight G. Wirtz


MASON CITY — Dwight G. Wirtz, 49, of Mason City died Saturday (March 26, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Two memorial services will be held, both with Rev. Donald Simmonds officiating. The first memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005 at the Battin Chapel Church, at the Intersection of County Road J Avenue and 216th Drive in Ogden, Iowa. The second service will be held in Mason City at 2 p.m. April 15, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Drive. A reception and celebration of Dwight's life will be held immediately following this service at the Mason City Community Theatre, 215 South Delaware Avenue. Inurnment will be in the Ogden Cemetery at a later date.

Dwight was born on January 26, 1956, the son of Robert E. and Rose Marie (Berglund) Wirtz in Boone, Iowa. He attended school in Ogden graduating from Ogden Community High School in 1974. Dwight graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University with a teaching degree in 1978.

Dwight taught in Rembrant and Lake City before joining the staff at the Clear Lake High School, where he taught English and Speech for nearly 20 years. He also directed plays and was involved in speech contests with the students.

Dwight's teaching career illustrated his desire to help young people and his feelings on the importance of education. One retired co-worker said, "Dwight was capable of teaching the higher grades, but remained teaching the freshman year. He took the rowdy and unready and prepared them to finish a proper education." Dwight was an active member of the National Education Association.

His teaching career echoed his true passion: the theater. Dwight began his theater career in high school and had several major roles in college productions. Dwight was very active in the Mason City Community Theatre, wearing many hats as actor, director, board member and past president. He recently received the Calvin Award for outstanding contributions in the Mason City Community Theatre.

Dwight broadened his talents into the culinary arts. He enjoyed preparing and serving gourmet dishes for his family and friends. Dwight also had a rich taste for fine music and literature.

Dwight will be dearly missed by family and his large network of friends all over the world.

Dwight is survived by his father, Robert Wirtz and partner, Eleanore Redmon, of Ogden; brother, Dennis Wirtz of Marshalltown; sister, Janice McCoy and husband, Tim, of Perry; brother, Jeff Wirtz and wife, Tammy of Ogden; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and countless dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rose, and sister-in-law, Sandy Wirtz.

GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — Col. Lyle S. McCabe, U.S.M.C. (Ret.) 81, of German-town, Tenn., formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday (March 31, 2005) at Methodist University Hospital of Memphis.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Germantown, Tenn., with the Rev. Wayne Ressler officiating. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, at Memphis Funeral Home-Poplar Chapel of Memphis, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

Col. McCabe was born Feb. 29, 1924 in LaCrosse, Wis., the son of Stephen A. and Olga McCabe. He married Margaret Gruesen on June 18, 1949, in Duluth, Minn.

He grew up and graduated from Central High School in Duluth, Minn. He then attended St. Thomas College in St. Paul, Minn., until enlisting in the Naval Aviation Cadet Program in November 1942. He graduated from Flight School and was commissioned in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the South Pacific during World War II and also served in the Korean Conflict.

Col. McCabe was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Gold Star, The Air Medal with Gold Star, The Presidential Unit Citation, the Navy Unit Citation, and the Theater Ribbons. He retired from the Marine Corps as a colonel with 32 years of service.

Lyle graduated from the University of Minnesota and worked for Federated Insurance Company of Owatonna, Minn. After retiring from Federated, he became the safety director for Cerro Gordo County in Mason City, Iowa.

Lyle was elected to the Mason City Park and Recreation Board and served one term as chairman.

He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman.

He was a life member of the third-and fourth-degree Knights of Columbus of Germantown, the B.P.O. Elks of Memphis and the VFW Post No. 733, of Mason City.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of Germantown; four daughters, Maureen Bidasolo, of Sisters, Ore.; Colleen McCabe-Bricklin, of New York; Kathleen (Trinka) McCabe-Sterland, of Gilbert, Ariz.; Margaret Fulcher, Carson City, Nev., and two sons, Stephen A. McCabe, Germantown, Tenn., and Patrick L. McCabe, Broomfield, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Kathleen Dupont, Cloquet, Minn., and Ruth Eide, Granada Hills, Calif.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Michael and Joseph and by his parents.

NORA SPRINGS — William "Clayton" Sutton 73, of 316 N. Gaylord, died Friday (April 1, 2005) at his home.

William "Clayton" Sutton was born on March 13, 1932, in Mason City, the son of Ervin and Alta (Molsberry) Sutton.

Clayton attended schools in Plymouth, country school Rock No. 7 and graduated from Osage High School. During high school he excelled very well in athletics, especially track, where he received medals at the Drake Relays and in wrestling.

Clayton was drafted into the United States Army in 1953, completing his training in Fort Riley, Kansas, and later being sent to Korea. Afterwards, he returned to the family farm where he helped his dad. Clayton began working for the Nora Springs Creamery on a milk route. He also worked for Oliver-White Manufacturing until they closed. He then went to work for Winnebago Industries in Forest City delivering motor homes.

Clayton enjoyed gardening, riding his motorcycle, puzzles, reading, teaching all of his nieces and nephews how to play chess and how to tie their shoe laces. His greatest love was spending time with family.

Clayton was a natural teacher to children and young people would gravitate to him. He attended Plymouth United Methodist Church.

Clayton is survived by his siblings, Earl (Carrol) Sutton, of Texas, Janet Peterson, of Nora Springs, Lora (Jerald) Tourtellott, of Osage, Clinton (Karen) Sutton, of Hastings, Minn., Linda (Mike) Kohler, of Mason City, his aunt, Eva Harmon, of Mason City; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Wilma was born May 21, 1914, in Rock Township in Mitchell County, Iowa, the daughter of Richard and Anna (Rachut) Beyer. She attended school in St. Ansgar graduating in 1932. Wilma married Lloyd Hansen on June 15,1932. They lived in Carpenter, Iowa and moved to St. Ansgar where they spent their entire life. Wilma enjoyed traveling with Lloyd on his charters. Her Alaska visit was the most memorable for her. She worked for the St. Ansgar Community Schools for many years as a cook.

Wilma's family was the joy of her life. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. She will be remembered for her immaculate lawn and wonderful cookies. She was known to give those extra-large helpings to her special kids at school. Her recipes are being handed down to her grandchildren.

She is survived by her two children, Gloria Jordahl of St. Ansgar, and Richard Hansen and his wife, Helen, of La Habra, Calif.; four grandchildren, Kari and husband, David Fomon, of Coralville, Erik and wife, Heather Jordahl, of Bettendorf, Dana Schauster and Mark Hansen both of Anaheim, Calif.; seven great-grandchildren, Joshua and Kristin Fomon, Taylor and Nicholas Jordahl, Michael, Christopher and Brandon Hansen; brother-in-law, Thomas Zitnak; several nephews, and a niece.

Gail Jean Swalve was born March 18, 1959, in Winnebago County, Iowa, to parents Lewis John and Beverly Ann (Fox) Swalve. She attended school in Thompson and Buffalo Center, graduating from Buffalo Center High School.
 
Gail worked at various places over the years including Winnebago Industries in Forest City, Duncan Heights Care Facility in Duncan, and most recently, Byerly's Inc. in Lake Mills. She also provided child care while she lived in Garner, Iowa.
 
On April 13, 2002, Gail was united in marriage with Dennis Potter at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center. The couple made their home in Thompson.
 
Gail will be remembered always for her kind, fun-loving, and generous spirit. She took great pride in her family, especially her grandson, Isaiah. She forever had a place for children in her heart, whether it was caring for others, being a 4-H leader, or being there for her daughter and her step-children.
 
Survivors include her husband, Dennis of Thompson; daughter, Stephanie Swalve and Dan Krein of Thompson; grandson, Isaiah Oudekerk; her dad, Lewis Swalve and his wife, Donna of Hayfield; step-daughter, Amanda Potter of Lake Mills; step-son, Steven Potter of Cedar Falls; six brothers, Kevin Swalve, Morgan Adams, Merlin Swalve, Rex Swalve, Raymond Swalve, and Lyman Martinson; three sisters, Kim Swalve, Jill Fox, and Beth Zitzow; grandparents, Vivian and Earl Fox, Jr. of Forest City; a step-grandmother, Virginia Neeley of Buffalo Center; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

MANLY — Dorothy E.M. Rademaker, 94, of Manly, died Saturday (April 02, 2005) at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
 
Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 428 West Walnut, Manly, with the Reverend Randy Nielsen officiating. Interment will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Grafton Cemetery.

Dorothy was born Dec. 21, 1910, in rural Grafton, the daughter of Otto and Alvina (Walk) Braun. She was the second of eight children, with three brothers and four sisters. Dorothy was baptized and later confirmed in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton.
 
On Oct. 19, 1930, she was united in marriage to John J. Rademaker in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. They remained members of that church for over 50 years. They had two daughters, Dorothy Janet and Mary Ann. The family farmed in rural Grafton until November 1970.
 
In retirement, they moved to their home in Manly. They joined Bethlehem Lutheran Church and were faithful members the rest of their lives in Manly.
 
After her husband's death in 1983, Dorothy continued to live in their home until she moved to the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in July 2001. Over the years, she enjoyed cooking, mending, gardening, and entertaining her grandchildren and other family members.
 
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Dorothy Hanna and Mary Chisholm, both of Manly, and one brother, Everett (Chrystal) Braun of Grafton; eleven grandchildren, Mark (Barb) Hanna of Ogden, Janet Hanna of Manly, Lyle (Terri) Hanna of Katy, Texas, Cindy Dahl of South Sioux City, Neb., Tim (Nancy) Chisholm of North Branch, Minn, John (Lisa) Chisholm of Forest City, Jane Chisholm of Walkersville, Md., Jeff (Lorrie) Chisholm of Nevada, Sandy (Randy) Linderman of Mason City, Judy Horning of Northwood and Jim (Paula) Chisholm of Ellsworth, Wis., 24 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
 
 Along with her husband and parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her four sisters, Hazel Schultz, Gertrude Merkel, Evelyn Nelson, and Violet Braun; two brothers, Harvey and Armond Braun; one granddaughter, Marsha Hanna Davids and one grandson-in-law, Mark Horning.

Pauline graduated from Mason City High School. She married Maurice Mortenson May 28, 1938 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. Pauline was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing, playing cards, traveling and gardening.
 
Pauline is survived by her son, Todd Mortenson of Brownsdale, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, Glen Blunt of Mason City, and Harold (Dolly) Schipper of Mason City.

Dale Howard Richey was born Aug. 26, 1946, in Mason City to Donald Howard and Gladys Virginia (Keltner) Richey. He was one of four children. Dale was educated in Rockwell and a lifelong resident of Rockwell. He honorably and faithfully served his country from Sept. 20, 1967 to April 23, 1969 in the U.S. Army, Light Infantry Brigade of the No. 199th Division during the Vietnam Conflict. Dale was married to Barb Lemke and later to Kathy Siefken.
 
Dale was employed as a signal operator with the Pacific Union Railroad and later the Northwestern Railroad, retiring in 2002 with 29 years of service.
 
Dale had a great passion in life for hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors. His hunting included deer, ducks, geese and pheasants. In earlier years Dale enjoyed trapping. Dale's family recalls that he was a devoted and dedicated Dad, Grandpa, brother and uncle.
 
Dale will be remembered for his generosity and making contributions to the NRA, Pheasants Forever and the American Legion.
 
Dale will be dearly missed by his family and friends who have shared in his life.
 
Dale is survived by his children; twin daughters, Jean ‘‘P'nut'' A. (Troy) Franke of Dumont; Jan ‘‘Toad'' L. Richey of Mason City; his son, Aaron Dale Richey of Osage; four grandchildren, Trey M. Richey, Katelyn M. Richey, Cole A. Franke and Carli J. Franke; one sister, Susan E. Richey of Fond Du Lac, Wis., and one brother, Robert C. Richey of Anamosa, Iowa.

MARBLE ROCK — Opal Kelly, 95, of Marble Rock, died Sunday (April 3, 2005) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Opal Faye Randall Kelly was born on Oct. 11, 1909, at Marble Rock, the daughter of Elmer and Mamie (Hubbard) Randall. She graduated in 1927 from the Marble Rock High School. Upon graduation she taught school and helped on the farm. On Feb. 6, 1943, she was united in marriage to Joseph Kelly at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville. She spent all of her life on the family farm and also worked for 16 years at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. She was a long-time active member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church and the Rosary Society.
 
She had many interests, including bird watching, gardening, doing yard work, raising chickens and turkeys, reading, writing letters, keeping a diary, reminiscing, caring for her dog, April. She was an avid follower of "Wheel of Fortune."
 
Opal's family was very important to her and she always took a special interest in them.
 
Living family members include a son, Norman (Sara) Kelly of Marble Rock; four grandchildren, Bob Kelly of Mason City, Mardel (Rod) Brockett of Reinbeck, Andy (Corey) Kelly of Sherrill and Frank (Mary) Kelly of Marble Rock; four great grandchildren, Skyler Kelly and Kelly, Sadie and Paul Brockett; and many nieces and nephews.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on June 5, 1989; a son, Milton Kelly; a brother, Virgil Randall; a sister, Lucille Randall.

Darrel A. ‘Fuzz' Barth
 
GREENE — Funeral services for longtime Greene businessman, Darrel A. Barth, 88, of 502 West Traer, Apt. 1, Greene, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.
 
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, Greene, where there will be a public Scripture Service and Service of Remembrance at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church on Thursday .
 
Darrel Andrew Barth was born on Feb. 23, 1917, in rural Union Township, Floyd County, a son of Harry Franklin and Mae Edna (Fisher) Barth, and died Sunday (April 3, 2005) at the Hospice Unit of the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
 
He received his education in the rural Floyd County Schools and the Greene Public Schools. As a young man, he farmed with his father until 1947 when he joined Barth Chevrolet in Greene.
 
On May 26, 1940, he was united in marriage to Roberta M. Boyd in Charles City. To this union were blessed six children.
 
Fuzz coached and played fast-pitch softball and organized teams under the church leagues, Barth Trucking, and Barth Chevrolet from the early 1940s to the mid 1960s. He also sponsored the Barth Chevrolet Bowling Team for many years.
 
He and Roberta went on many Chevy-sponsored trips, including Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. They spent their winters in Florida for twenty-five years.
 
Fuzz was a huge sports fan, especially following the Hawkeyes, the Vikings, and any sport his grandkids were playing. He was an avid bowler, golfer, and loved to go "Up North" fishing.
 
Darrel was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Trustee and an Elder.
 
He was a member of the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association, Butler County Dealers Association, Greene, Commercial Club, and a member of the Round Grove Golf & Country Club, where he enjoyed helping mow the fairways.
 
He is survived by his loving wife and companion of nearly 65 years, Roberta of Greene; three sons: Bob (Rita) Barth, Greene, Kenny Barth, Clarion, and Harry (Jean) Barth, Tipton; two daughters: Barbara (Jim) Killoran, Dubuque, and Linda (Mel) Anderson, Tripoli, 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; a sister, Charlotte O'Brien, Greene; and an aunt, Geneva Martin of Charles City.
 
Darrel was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Barth (1977); his parents; and one brother, Mervin Barth (1959).

Dorothy E.M. Rademaker

 
MANLY — Dorothy E.M. Rademaker, 94, of Manly, died Saturday (April 02, 2005) at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
 
Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 428 West Walnut, Manly, with the Reverend Randy Nielsen officiating. Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Grafton Cemetery.
 
Visitation was held from 6 until 8 p.m. on Monday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring Street in Manly and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church today.

Dorothy was born Dec. 21, 1910, in rural Grafton, the daughter of Otto and Alvina (Walk) Braun. She was the second of eight children, with three brothers and four sisters. Dorothy was baptized and later confirmed in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton.
 
On Oct. 19, 1930, she was united in marriage to John J. Rademaker in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. They remained members of that church for over 50 years. They had two daughters, Dorothy Janet and Mary Ann. The family farmed in rural Grafton until November 1970. In retirement, they moved to their home in Manly. They joined Bethlehem Lutheran Church and were faithful members the rest of their lives in Manly.
 
After her husband's death in 1983, Dorothy continued to live in their home until she moved to the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in July 2001. Over the years, she enjoyed cooking, mending, gardening, and entertaining her grandchildren and other family members.
 
Along with her husband and parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her four sisters: Hazel Schultz, Gertrude Merkel, Evelyn Nelson, and Violet Braun; two brothers: Harvey and Armond Braun; one granddaughter, Marsha Hanna Davids; one grandson-in-law, Mark Horning; and one son-in-law, Jack Hanna.
 
Dorothy is survived by her daughters: Dorothy Hanna and Mary Chisholm, both of Manly; one brother, Everett (Chrystal) Braun of Grafton; one sister-in-law, Marcella Braun of St. Ansgar; and one brother-in-law, Arthur Merkel of Manly. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Mark (Barb) Hanna of Ogden, Janet Hanna of Manly, Lyle (Terri) Hanna of Katy, Texas, Cindy Dahl of South Sioux City, Neb., Tim (Nancy) Chisholm of North Branch, Minn., John (Lisa) Chisholm of Forest City, Jane Chisholm of Walkersville, Md., Jeff (Lorrie) Chisholm of Nevada, Sandy (Randy) Linderman of Mason City, Judy Horning of Northwood, and Jim (Paula) Chisholm of Ellsworth, Wis.; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jane Middleton

 
CLARION — Jane Middleton, 82, of Clarion passed away Saturday (April 2, 2005) at Wright Medical Center in Clarion.
 
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Clarion. There will be a private family burial prior to the services.

Jane (Brooks) Middleton was born on Oct. 3, 1922. The daughter of Earl and Margaret Brooks of Eldora. She was raised in Eldora, Hampton, and Eagle Grove.
 
Jane graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1940 and Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Marshalltown in 1944.
 
On Sept. 1, 1946, Jane was united in marriage to Frank W. Middleton at her parents' home in Eagle Grove. The couple spent their married life in Clarion.
 
Jane practiced nursing in the U.S. Army, Clarion Community School, private practice and Wright County Public Health.
 
Jane is survived by her husband, Frank; sister-in-law, Mrs. Wendell Brooks of Buckeye, Ariz.; and her two sons and one daughter. She is also survived by and has cherished the support of the Middleton family: David Middleton and his wife, Helen, of Richland, Wash. their son and daughter; Jo Ellen Middleton of Riverside, Calif. and her two daughters; Tom and Vicki Middleton and children: Marc and Nancy Middleton and children, all of Belmond, Ron and Cheryl Middleton of Omaha, Neb.
 
She cherished the love and support of the Jack and Beth Row family: Jack Row II and his wife, Annette, of Tennessee their two sons, Valerie (Row) Watson and her husband, George, of Bella Vista, Ark., Jeff Row of Dallas, Texas and his daughter and two sons, Barbara (Row) Moore and her husband, Jim, of Clarion; Jane's two honorary grandchildren, Elizabeth and Samuel Moore of Clarion; and many great nieces and nephews. Love especially to Nancy, Barbara and Valerie.

Lavern G. Finlayson

 
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. — Lavern G. Finlayson of Garden Grove, Calif., passed away on Sunday (March 20, 2005) at the age of 95.
 
Lavern was born in Plankinton, S.D., on Nov. 5, 1909, and is survived by his wife, Geneva; a nephew, Richard Fitzgerald, Greendale, Wis.; and nieces: Phyllis Klatt, Eagan, Minn., Margaret McLaughlin, Mason City; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Finlayson, Rockwell.
 
Lavern was the third oldest in a family of four children, all of whom preceded him in death.
 
He was reared and educated in Rockwell, where he lived until drafted into the army in World War II. He served 39 months in the United States and overseas.
 
His last 18 years of employment were as a custodian at the Post Office in Mason City.
 
Upon his retirement, he and his wife moved to Estes Park, Colo., where they lived for eight years and from there to Garden Grove, Calif., for the last 20 years.
