Peter Orland ‘Ole' Reinsmoen

JOICE — Peter Orland ‘Ole' Reinsmoen, 83, of Joice died Friday (April 8, 2005) at Comfort House Hospice, McAllen, at his winter home in Almo, Texas.

A memorial service will conducted by the Rev. Bill Peters, Bethany Lutheran Church, Joice, at a later date with inurnment at Concordia Cemetery, Joice.

The son of Peter M. and Olga (Skrien) Reinsmoen was born March 13, 1922, at his parents' Joice farm home where he lived his entire life.

His education was in the Joice schools, graduating as class president from high school in 1940. From boyhood, he participated in sports at every opportunity, lettering in baseball and basketball at Joice High School and continuing with town and church teams, sometimes on the same teams as his sons.

He married Lois Tweed of Joice, daughter of Otis and Florence (Nelson) Tweed, at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, May 9, 1943. They were to celebrate their 62nd anniversary this spring.

To this union six children, Mary, Mark, Robert, Jane, Laura and Molly were born.

He was partial to his church, his family, his hometown and the great outdoors, exploring the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota and Canada in his canoe more than 50 times. The last time was in 2003 at age 81 with his wife and all five children. He enjoyed camping with family and friends and the summer vacations at the same Minnesota resort in the same cottage for 18 years. An extended trip to Norway with Lois and more than 60 of the Tweed/Tvedt clan in 1993 was a highlight of his life.

‘Ole' and two cousins were given nicknames in early childhood by his grandmother, Kaia Reinsmoen, from a comic strip in the Decorah Posten. His always stayed with him.

He was a good pool player, cribbage player and bowler. Also an avid reader, especially history and was always a firm supporter of Indian causes and wildlife. Although not an ardent golfer, he said he had two ‘pure luck' holes- in-one at the Rice Lake course, where he was a lifetime member.

He was a faithful, loving son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He bravely assumed the role of ‘roommate' in his wife's newspaper columns and was an unflinching sport about it. Norwegian through and through, he never missed a chance to say so. He was a homebody and loved his homestead which was designated a century farm in 1978. An honest and trustworthy gentleman in all his dealings, his way of life was to leave his ‘campsite' better than he found it.

He is survived by his wife Lois, Joice; five children: Mary Reinsmoen of Madison, Wis., Mark (Dianne) Reinsmoen of Burnsville, Minn., Robert (Mary) Reinsmoen of Chanhassen, Minn., Jane Heilskov of Mason City and Molly (Dave) Iverson of Joice; one sister, Carole (Allen) Freize of Hampton; 16 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; two sisters-in- law; four brothers-in-law; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Laura, at age 13; two sisters, Mildred (Kermit) Anonson and Carma (Alton) Tenold; parents-in-law; three brothers-in law; one sister-in-law; two sons-in-law, Paul Heilskov and Ron Almelien; and one nephew.

Blessed be his memory.

Alice Smedley Cogill

MASON CITY — Alice Smedley Cogill, 88, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Thursday (April 7, 2005) at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at First Assembly of God, 1301 N. Carolina, Mason City, with the Rev. Norm Tosten officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

Alice R. Smedley was born Nov. 4, 1916, on a farm near Rockwell, to Elsie Louisa and Milton Smedley. Those were the days of horse and buggy in summer and sleigh rides in the winter. She learned to love the land from the day she was born. She liked nothing better than to dig her fingers in the dirt and plant the seeds and see them grow. Her specialty was flowers; tulips, lilies, rose, chrysanthemums — anything and everything that had color.

Alice graduated from high school in 1934. She was a good student and a master with words. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and cryptograms. The TV program "Wheel of Fortune" was one of her favorites. She could almost always solve the puzzle before any of the contestants could. Her love for reading took her many places she could never go. She always said "One can go anywhere in the world through books," and she did.

Baseball was a great love of hers. Her favorite team was the Minnesota Twins. During baseball season, you could often find her listening to the game on the radio as well as watching it on TV.

She married John Cogill in 1935. Three daughters were born to them, Sherry, Karen, and Marilyn, who goes by Dee. Her children serving God is a great testimony of God's faithfulness to her.

Alice was an active member of the Assembly of God Church and committed her life to Jesus Christ. She taught Sunday school, children's church, was secretary of the church board, beside many other involvements.

Alice worked at Mercy Hospital for many years. In 1959, she took a position as a seamstress for Formalities Bridal Shop.

We mourn her loss but rejoice in the fact that she faces no more pain or sorrow, only joy everlasting with her Master and Lord.

Alice is survived by her three daughters: Sherry (Art) Zurn, Garner, Karen (Jerry) Parsley, Springfield, Mo., and Marilyn ‘Dee' (Tomm) Byrtus, Faribault, Minn.; 10 grandchildren: Lee Davidson, Jerry Szymeczek, Gary (Sue) Szymeczek, Elaine Michaels, Lisa (Fred) Schroeder, Kerry (Gordon) Hicks, Kert (Tami) Parsley, Kristi (Alan) Kalal, Rachelle (Tim) Rachuy, and Matthew Byrtus; 23 great-grandchildren: Elizabeth (Mike), Rachel (John), Christopher, Carrie, John (Jennifer), Joe, Sarah, Bob, Lori (Ryan), Jennifer, Jodie, Matthew, Kaylyn, Kelsey, Konner, Kase, Koleman, Kaden, Kylie, Logan, McKenzie, Calvin and Ethan; three great-great-grandchildren: Adriane, Nicole, and Mason. She is also survived by her two sisters, Lettie Bucalstein, LaHabra, Calif., and Reba Miller, Belmond.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister, Art, Vern, Joe, Clyde and Ruth.

Memorials may be given to the Alice R. Cogill Memorial Fund.
