Harold Carl Hunt

ALGONA — Harold Carl Hunt, 98, of Algona died Thursday (April 14, 2005) at the Algona Manor.

Following Harold's wishes, family and friends are cordially invited to a burial service at  10 a.m. Monday at Union Cemetery in Livermore.

Harold Carl Hunt was born to Warren and Bertha Sanderson Hunt on Feb. 19, 1907, in Livermore, Iowa. He graduated from Livermore High School in 1924, and completed a course in mechanics in Des Moines. He began farming near Livermore in his late teens.

On Aug. 30, 1933, he married Geneva Elise Mackintosh, also of Livermore, and they farmed several places until buying a farm on the LuVerne-Sexton road in 1937.

In 1948, the couple took   a three-year break to travel with their preschool daughter to each state west of the Mississippi River, seeing the sights and visiting family and friends, working as needed. They returned to a farm north of Algona in 1950, where they farmed until retirement in 1970, and where Harold lived until 2000. He then moved to Van Buren Terrace in Algona. In late August 2004, he moved to the Algona Manor.

In addition to farming, Harold was a finish carpenter and did construction work in the winter months. He design-ed and built their house outside of Algona. He drove a school bus for the Algona school system for many years. He and Geneva raised a large garden and tended many apple trees through their life together and shared the fruits of these labors with family, friends, and neighbors. Harold had many skills appreciated by his family and community.

Harold enjoyed reading, traveling, good conversation, and a good card or board game. He learned to play a persistent, wily, and winning game of rummy cube in the last two decades. He also somewhere picked up a good game of pool. Harold was an inherently ethical man, trustworthy, calm and steady, stately, with a good but dry sense of humor which he kept to the end. He was a charter member of the Rural Electric Co-op, and a long-standing member of the Farm Bureau and Good Hope Methodist Church.

Harold is survived by a daughter, Lois Jean, and son-in-law, Edward F. O'Neil of Vicksburg, Miss.; and by 10 nieces; 13 nephews and numerous friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Leona Neel; brothers: Albert, Ralph, and Elmer; wife, Geneva, (December 1998); and two babies.

Arrangements are with Wilson Funeral Home, Algona.
