Upon re-enlistment, Paul was assigned to Mare Island Nuclear Power School where the curriculum included physics, advanced algebra, differential and integral calculus, metallurgy, quantum mechanics, hydraulics, thermodynamics, chemistry and radiation health physics.

Additional training for operator and electronic maintenance training followed in Idaho at the National Reactor Test Station.

He was involved in the first dual parallel operation of nuclear reactors and operated both pressurized and “seed and blanket” breeder reactors.

After additional training in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was assigned to the first nuclear powered carrier, the USS Enterprise, where he qualified to operate all eight reactors and made the initial start-up for a “sourceless” core.

He was assigned to the Commandant of the 1st Naval District during the great East Coast blackout in 1965. Paul volunteered for Vietnam where he served in a supervisory position on river patrol boats as well as traveling throughout the country repairing cryptographic equipment.

Later, while serving on the USS Shangri-La, he was asked by the Navy to attend another secret cryptographic school after which he was assigned to an aviation support ship home ported in Naples, Italy.

Advanced electronics school at Great Lakes, Ill. followed his next re-enlistment with duty in Puerto Rico with The Presidential Command Net.

After release from the Great Lakes Naval Hospital for injuries sustained during his earlier Vietnam tour, Paul reported to a guided missile destroyer, which spent four deployments to Vietnam.

Paul retired from the Navy in 1974, was a 100 percent service-connected disabled veteran and was on the “Agent Orange” disability list.

Paul’s proudest accomplishments included the first installation of a global positioning system (GPS) on an aircraft that flew from the U.S. to the Paris Air Show automatically and accurately and the designing and installation of the electronic interconnects for various helicopters.
