WILLIAM A. AND DOROTHY M. THOMPSON

MASON CITY — Dorothy M. Thompson, 79, of 2217 20th S.W., Mason City, died Saturday (Oct. 30, 2004) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following complications of heart surgery.

William A. Thompson, 81, of 2217 20th S.W., Mason City, died Sunday (Oct. 31, 2004) at USA Healthcare in Mason City, of a broken heart.

Funeral services for Bill and Dory will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, and again one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

They lived, loved and laughed together, a storybook romance. In the summer of 1940, Bill met Dory and knew she was the woman he would marry. They spent the summer together roller skating and swimming at the Bayside Amusement Park in Clear Lake and bowling in Mason City.

Bill graduated from Belmond High School the following spring of 1941 and Dory from Mason City High School a year later in 1942; he was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1943.

Dorothy was born on Nov. 16, 1924, in Mason City, the daughter of William and Minnie (Watson) Toinbee. Dory worked for Decker’s Packing Co. and eagerly awaited the end of World War II.

She was a wonderful wife and mother. Dory always welcomed family and friends into their home often asking “if they were hungry” or offering a roll and coffee. She was gracious and generous to everyone.

She enjoyed cooking and would watch cooking shows for new ideas. She kept her mind sharp by working the Globe Gazette crossword puzzles and her hands busy with crocheting. Each fall she looked forward to a trip to the apple orchards.

Bill was born on April 26, 1923, in Belmond, the son of Richard and Matilda Thompson, and Helen Nelson. His first job was a telephone lineman; he then worked as a farm handyman. In 1942, he became employed at State Brand Creamery (AMPI) where he worked until he joined the service.

Bill traveled across Africa and Italy where he was wounded in action. After recuperating at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius, he rejoined his company and fought across France and into Germany.

During his tour he was involved in six major campaigns, received 14 metals, and attained the rank of sergeant. Among his metals were the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Honorably discharged from the Army, Bill made a mad dash for Mason City to marry his sweetheart, Dory. One month later, on her birthday, Nov. 16, 1945 they were wed at the Little Brown Church in the Vale of Nashua.

He returned to work at State Brand Creamery where he worked for 42 years. They started their family with the first of six children arriving in the winter of 1947.

Bill was a great husband and father. He passed on his hobbies to his children. He was competitive in billiards and was the Mason City champion for several years. Bill also enjoyed bowling, golfing and woodworking.

Bill and Dory loved spending time with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Every Wednesday was family supper night. Together they enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and were die-hard Cubs fans.

Bill and Dory lovingly took care of each other for 59 years. In the end they couldn’t live without one another. Their family believes Dory called Bill to be with her in heaven.

Those who shared in Bill and Dory’s lives include five children: Sandi (Ron) Schlichting, of Clear Lake; Bill (Cheryl) Thompson, of Mason City; Deb (Chris) Jilek, of Mason City; Kyle (Wendy) Thompson, of Rockford; Mindy (James) Mahaney, Mason City; 12 grandchildren: Derek (Angie) Goll, Deirdre (Tom) Witham, Billie (Rod) Keith, Tommie Jo Thompson, Chad (Angie) Jilek, Lacey Jilek, Ryan Jilek, Mackenzie Dunn, Beth, Chelsie, Chloe Thompson, and Drew (Tina) Thompson; 17 great-grandchildren: Alicia, Katelyn, Zach, Alex, Molly, Sydney, Brooke, Jake, Jaime, Nicole, Joey, Kinsey, Matthew, Aubrea, Kailah, Zoey, and Lily; Dory’s sisters: Annabelle Theilen and Margaret Stepleton both of Mason City; Bill’s mother, Helen Nelson; brothers: Duan (Linda) Thompson, of Belmond; and John (Marlys) Thompson, of Osage; sisters-in-law: Betty Thompson, of Belmond; and Ruth Thompson, of Florida.

They were preceded in death by one daughter, Sally Ann Thompson; Dory’s parents; four sisters: Lucille Boehmer, Edna Albertson, Patricia Murl, and Marcella Hugo; three brothers: Robert, William and LeRoy Toinbee; Bill’s parents; sister, Anita Whipple; three brothers: Richard, Donald, and Roger Thompson.

WILLIAM A. AND DOROTHY M. THOMPSON

MASON CITY — Dorothy M. Thompson, 79, of 2217 20th S.W., Mason City, died Saturday (Oct. 30, 2004) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following complications of heart surgery.

William A. Thompson, 81, of 2217 20th S.W., Mason City, died Sunday (Oct. 31, 2004) at USA Healthcare in Mason City of a broken heart.

Funeral services for Bill and Dory will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, and again one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will be at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

They lived, loved and laughed together, a storybook romance. In the summer of 1940, Bill met Dory and knew she was the woman he would marry. They spent the summer together roller skating and swimming at Bayside Amusement Park in Clear Lake and bowling in Mason City.

Bill graduated from Belmond High School the following spring in 1941 and Dory graduated from Mason City High School a year later in 1942. He was inducted into the U.S.

During his tour he was involved in six major campaigns, received 14 medals, and attained the rank of sergeant. Among his medals were the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Honorably discharged from the Army, Bill made a mad dash for Mason City to marry his sweetheart, Dory. One month later, on her birthday, Nov. 16, 1945, they were wed at the Little Brown Church in the Vale of Nashua.

Those who shared in Bill and Dory’s lives include five children: Sandi (Ron) Schlichting, of Clear Lake; Bill (Cheryl) Thompson, of Mason City; Deb (Chris) Jilek, of Mason City; Kyle (Wendy) Thompson, of Rockford; and Mindy (James) Mahaney, of Mason City; 12 grandchildren: Derek (Angie) Goll, Deirdre (Tom) Witham, Billie (Rod) Keith, Tommie Jo Thompson, Chad (Angie) Jilek, Lacey Jilek, Ryan Jilek, Mackenzie Dunn, Beth, Chelsie, Chloe Thompson and Drew (Tina) Thompson; 17 great-grandchildren: Alicia, Katelyn, Zach, Alex, Molly, Sydney, Brooke, Jake, Jaime, Nicole, Joey, Kinsey, Matthew, Aubrea, Kailah, Zoey, and Lily; Dory’s sisters: Annabelle Theilen and Margaret Stepleton; a brother-in-law, LeRoy Hugo, all of Mason City; Bill’s mother, Helen Nelson; brothers: Duan (Linda) Thompson, of Belmond; and John (Marlys) Thompson, of Osage; sisters-in-law: Betty Thompson, of Belmond; and Ruth Thompson, of Florida.

They were preceded in death by one daughter, Sally Ann Thompson; Dory’s parents; four sisters: Lucille Boehmer, Edna Albertson, Patricia Murl, and Marcella Hugo; three brothers: Robert, William and LeRoy Toinbee; Bill’s parents; sister, Anita Whipple; three brothers: Richard, Donald, and Roger Thompson.

LEONA B. ‘LEE’ KING

CLEAR LAKE — Leona B. “Lee” King, 84, died of cancer on Wednesday (Nov. 3, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A service to celebrate Lee’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with Lay Assistant Richard L. Scott officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Lee was born to John and Eleanor (Hermansen) Eliasen on April 4, 1920, in Clear Lake. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Zion Lutheran Church.

After graduation from CLHS in 1938, Lee was a cashier in the coffee shop at the Hanford Hotel in Mason City.

During the early war years, she worked at Oluf T. Hanson’s and then as an office assistant for Dr. R.W. Peterson in Clear Lake.

She married James H. King on May 7, 1942, after Jim had completed basic training for the Navy and was home on 30-day delayed orders.

When her husband returned from an 18-month tour of duty with Naval air groups in the Pacific, he was stationed in San Diego. Lee followed him there and worked at Consolidated Aircraft, where the Navy’s planes were being built.

After the war, Lee and Jim returned to Clear Lake. Over the next few years, three daughters and a son were born. Lee enjoyed being a busy stay-at-home wife and mother.

As the children grew and were full-time students, she worked in the school hot lunch program for 11 years. This allowed her to be home with her family when school was not in session.

In 1976, Jim was transferred to the general office of Williams Pipeline in Tulsa, Okla. During their 20 years there, Lee volunteered at the Children’s Medical Center, did custom sewing for the Quilting Bee, a decorating business for homes and offices, and was a volunteer for Hospice.

Lee and Jim made several trips back to Iowa over the years to visit family and friends, and in 1996 they moved back to their hometown.

The transition back to Clear Lake seemed so natural, and once again, they enjoyed being close to longtime friends and their family.

They rejoined Zion Lutheran and Lee became active in Do Days, the Elderberries, the Visitation Committee, Prayer Chain and Circle.

Lee is survived by her husband, Jim; her sister, Marian Holt, and two sisters-in-law, Mary Eliasen of Clear Lake and Helen Leggett of Houston, Texas. She has three daughters: Barbara Rinell (and Jim) of Des Moines, Ginny Shinn of Denver, Colo., and Linda Royce (and Jim) of Charleston, S.C. Lee was blessed with 10 grandchildren: Michael and Christian Anderson of Des Moines and Amy Anderson of Altadena, Calif.; Brian King of Tulsa, Okla.; Clint Baxstrom, and Tiffany, Ryan and Todd Shinn of Denver, Colo.; and Nicholas and David Royce of Charleston, S.C. Lee also enjoyed four great-grand children, Alex Anderson, Lilly Baxstrom, Piper King, and Aiden Anderson, along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Harry Eliasen, and two brothers-in-law, Keith Holt and Leo Leggett, and her only son, Curtis James King.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be dedicated to Do-Days Group at Zion Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
