living in Dodge Center, Minn.

moved to Clear Lake. Katie and Allen divorced in
1983 but both remained in Clear Lake, one on the
north side and one on the south side.
She loved being the matriarch of a large family

again at Handicap (now Opportunity) Village and
worked there until her retirement.
She always told the truth, even if it meant
being blunt, and most people loved her anyway.
Her family always knew they were loved.
She enjoyed traveling all over the country to
see her family or friends. This kept her pretty
busy with children in Minnesota, Kansas,
Colorado, Arizona and Alaska.
Katie was a friend to many, wherever she was.
For the last five and a half years she
befriended her technicians and nurses at

Cramer, 89, a lifelong resident

15, 2004) at the Belmond Medical
Center in Belmond.
Funeral service will be 10:30
a.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran
Church in Belmond, with the Rev.
Lowell H. Halvorson officiating.
Burial with full military honors
rendered by the Belmond Military
Funeral Unit will be in the

p.m. today at Andrews Funeral
Home, 516 First St. S.E. in
Belmond, and continue one hour

at the church.
The family suggests memorials to
the donor’s choice.
Wallace A. Cramer was born Jan.
13, 1915, in Belmond, the son of
Charles and Pauline
(Christopherson) Cramer.
He was baptized at the United
Methodist Church in Belmond.
Soupy attended Belmond Community
Schools and graduated from
Belmond High School in 1933.
Following his schooling, he was
employed by Petersen’s Meat
Market. It was during his years
of employment with the meat
market that he met his true love
and life companion of more than
66 years, Marion L. (Rohn).
Soupy and Marion became
acquainted through his daily
deliveries to Petersen’s Cafe,
where Marion worked, across from
the market.
The couple was united in
marriage at Zion Lutheran Church
in Sheffield on Sept. 19, 1937.
Shortly after their marriage
Soupy opened his own business in
Belmond known as Soupy’s Shell
Service, on Highway 69. His wife
helped in the operation of the
cafe there.
Marion was diagnosed with
multiple sclerosis soon after
their marriage and was
physically disabled the rest of
her life. Soupy became her
life’s foundation and diligently
cared for her every need during
the next 66 years of their
partnership.
In 1941, he began his career for
the United States Postal Service
which spanned 35 years.
His civilian career was put on
hold for a time when he served
his country in the United States
Army during World War II. He
served from January 1943 until
December 1945 and spent time in
Africa and Italy.
Soupy received several
decorations from his tenure
including five Overseas Service
Bars, European-Eastern Ribbon
with two Bronze Stars, the Good
Conduct Medal, and the World War
II Victory Medal. He was
honorably discharged as a
sergeant.
Upon returning from the service,
he resumed his civilian career
as a rural mail carrier for the
next 15 years and then spent 20
years as a city carrier covering
18 miles per day. He retired in
November 1984.
Throughout his life, Soupy was a
devoted husband and tireless
caregiver to his wife Marion.
He also looked after the needs
of his sister, Lucille, prior to
her move to the Belmond Care
Center.
Soupy truly enjoyed all people
and his friendships crossed all
age boundaries. His warm and
inviting personality was shown
to both friend and stranger.
People who were privileged to
cross the path of his life will
remember his wonderful smile,
the twinkle in his eye, and his
warm “Hello!”
He was a generous and faithful
man who cherished being around
others and he was able to bring
out the best in everyone.
Soupy was very meticulous and
believed that everything had its
own special place.
He looked forward to coffee time
with friends around town and
dining out with his wife. It was
not uncommon to see them around
Belmond and the North Iowa area
on their dining out excursions.
The couple also shared a love of
collecting Hummels.
As a young man, Soupy had been
active in Boy Scouts and
continued his involvement as a
Scoutmaster in his adulthood.
He was an active and devoted
member of St. John Lutheran
Church and a member of the VFW.
Soupy and Marion had made their
home at the Bel Aire Condos
since October 1983.
They had enjoyed many of the
activities at the Leinbach
Retirement Center and Soupy
loved old-time music, especially
of the 1940s era.
He also dearly loved times with
his nieces and nephews and their
families.
Marion preceded him in death on
Jan. 29 of this year.
Following her passing, Soupy
continued to enjoy and
appreciate the love and support
of his special friends and
family.
Those left to cherish the memory
of his life include his sister,
Lucille Cramer, of the Belmond
Health Care Center, and many
nieces and nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, wife Marion, and four
sisters Mabel, Annie, Freda, and
Nellie.

THOMAS RAY BERHOW
BUFFALO CENTER — Funeral

Berhow, 55, of Buffalo
Center will be held at
10:30 a.m. Saturday at
Bethlehem Lutheran
Church in Buffalo Center

military honors by the
VFW/American Legion
Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held
from 5 to 7 p.m. at the
Winter Funeral Home in
Buffalo Center and one
hour prior to services
Saturday at the church.
Thomas Ray Berhow, the
son of Roy and Annie
(Lamping) Berhow, was
born Dec. 1, 1948, in
Forest City. He was
baptized and confirmed
in the Lutheran faith.
Tom was a 1967 graduate
of Buffalo Center High
School. After
graduation, he enlisted
in the U.S. Navy,
serving his country
proudly. He was on the
aircraft carrier the
U.S.S. Coral Sea and was
one of many who fought
off the coast of Vietnam
for the freedom of
others.
On Jan. 27, 1973, he was
united in marriage to
Connie Jo Paulsen at
East Side Lutheran
Church in Sioux Falls,
S.D..
Tom worked at Winnebago
Industries in Forest
City; for Loren Aukes
Fertilizer of Buffalo
Center; a short time for
Bud Florence of
Thompson, and also for
his cousin, Gary
Friesenborg, on the
farm, and for his
brother, Don, and the
Rawhide Ranch in
Wellman, Iowa.
He also drove for Denny
Wessels of Buffalo
Center, a few other
trucking companies and
most recently L.B.
Transport of Buffalo
Center.
Tom loved trucking and
missed it so much,
including all his
trucking buddies and all
those he met on the
road.
He saw many
near-accidents, sadly
witnessed some and
contended with bad
drivers.
He, like other truckers,
endured long hours and
all kinds of weather,
sometimes hauling LP to
keep us folks warm. He
hauled everything from
fuel to sugar.
He never complained. He
came home tired and
quiet, just content to
go to the pool hall and
play cards or pool with
his friends, or be home
on his computer.
Tom loved the land and
was content on a
tractor, a combine or
whatever he was asked to
do.
Tom enjoyed his fishing
trips with his brothers,
a circle of love no one
else could enter.
Tom was well-liked and
loved for his gentle
nature, sense of humor
and laughter.
Tom’s two little
granddaughters were his
“girls.” They loved
their “Papa” and won’t
be the same without him.
He was so deeply hurt
knowing he would not see
them grow up.
He so much wanted to see
his grandson, Austin,
before he passed on, but
he was too ill. He
thought of him so much
near his end.
Tom passed on Monday
(Nov. 15, 2004) at his
home in Buffalo Center
at the age of 55 with
those he loved after a
year’s battle with
cancer.
Tom is survived by his
wife, Connie Berhow, of
Buffalo Center; his
children, Jon Berhow of
Clear Lake; Mindy
Brackey of Clear Lake,
and Marcus Berhow of
Clear Lake; his
grandchildren, Reagan
Brackey and Monroe

Don Berhow of Buffalo
Center, Robert Berhow
and his wife, Linda, of
Miller; Jim Berhow and
his wife, Janean, of
Ames; and Randy Berhow
and his wife, Mary, of
Watertown, Minn.
Tom is preceded in death
by his parents; his
step- father, Clarence
Olson; his brother, Cleo
Berhow; his sister,
Shirley Wilson and her
husband, Cal, and his
sister-in-law, Myrtle
Berhow.

the Nora Springs
Care Center for
10 years.
Esther’s faith
and family were
of highest
priority
throughout her
life. She is
described by her
family as a very
generous, kind
and nurturing
woman who would
assist anyone in
any capacity.
Esther was a
wonderful
caregiver/babysitter
to the children
in Rockford as
nearly “every
baby in
Rockford” was
tended to by
Esther at some
time during
their youth.
Esther’s
children fondly
recall their
mother’s lemon
pies and coming
home from school
to a warm
chocolate cake.
Esther lived in
her own home
until August of
this year and
was a determined
lady who prided
herself as one
who made her own
decisions.
She treasured
attending family
reunions for the
past 45 years,
collecting and
saving postage
stamps and
playing any type
of card game.
She especially
loved
challenging her
guests to a game
of 500 when they
stopped by her
home to visit.
Esther looked
forward to
socializing at
Adult Day Care
on Wednesdays
and going for
long walks
around Rockford.
Cards and
letters from her
family and
friends were
important
treasures for
Esther. She
would
occasionally get
them out to
reread each and
every one.
Esther will be
missed dearly by
her family and
friends who have
shared in her
life.
She is survived
by her children,
Dona Wendt of
Sumner, Iowa;
Duane Mummelthie
of Clear Lake
and Mesa, Ariz.;
Robert
Mummelthie of
Mesa, Ariz.;
Bert Ann
(Charles) Ray of
Nevada, Iowa;
Betty Graham of
Madrid, Iowa,
and Donald
Mummelthie of
Chillicothe, Mo.
She will also be
sadly missed by
23
grandchildren,
29
great-grandchildren,
11
great-great-grandchildren
and many other
relatives and
friends.
Preceding Esther
in death were
her parents,
Henry and Emma
Kummelehne; her
son, Eugene
Mummelthie who
died on Nov. 18,
1996 (the same
day as Esther);
her
daughter-in-law,
Carol
Mummelthie; and
her son-in-law,
Bill Graham.
