JOHN ROBERT OLDHAM SR.


CHARLES CITY — John Robert Oldham Sr., 76, passed away on Saturday (March 13, 2004) at his residence.

Mr. Oldham was born March 6, 1928, in Charles City, Iowa, to Francis and Edith Oldham. He graduated from high school in Charles City, Iowa, in 1945 and went to Hamilton Business College in Mason City, where he graduated in 1946.

During high school and college, he worked at Charles City Granite Works with his father, Francis, who was a stonecutter, and did layout, stencil cutting, complete shop and sales manager at that time.

He entered military service on March 6, 1946, and received an honorable discharge in 1948.

He worked at Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. as an ac-countant to the office credit manager in a large store in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1951.

He later worked at Service Electric Co. (a major appliance and electrical contractor) in the position of sales manager until 1953 and also worked in the restaurant and motel business for five years until 1958.

He worked for Independent Life Insurance Co. for 11 years in sales and was promoted to superintendent until 1969.

Upon returning home to Iowa due to his father’s failing health, he returned to Charles City Granite Works in cemetery supervisory work.

In 1973, he met Barb Huffman Meyer they married on Nov. 10, 1975. They built onto their home in 1980 and moved their business of the Full Fledge Pet Store full-time.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also loved to decoupage. Because of his health, they retired and moved to Florida in 1999.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus, joined the American Legion on San Juan and was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Barb; daughters, Imelda Bertrand (husband Les), Paula Douglas (husband, Barry), of Jacksonville Fla., BrendaSue Solheim (husband Ron) of Eagle Grove, Iowa, Trisha Ann Barnish (husband John) of Charles City; sons, John Robert Oldham Jr. of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., August Meyer of Charles City, Allan Meyer (wife Heather) of Mason City, William Meyer (partner Linda) of Linn Grove; brothers, Al Oldham (wife Marion) of Montana, Rick Oldham (wife Peg) of Cedar Rapids, Paul Oldham (wife Janet) of Algona; sisters, Sister Francesca Oldham of Cedar Rapids, Cathy Phearman (husband Larry) of Plymouth and Mel Housh (husband Chuck) of Monee Ill.

Memorial Mass was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at St Paul’s Catholic Church in Jacksonville, Fla., with Father Thomas Sullivan officiating.

MASON CITY — Charliene S. Sissel, 63, of Mason City, died Tuesday (March 23, 2004) at her home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Michael Podhajsky officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a Sriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Charliene S. Boyd was born Feb. 2, 1941, the daughter of Scott and Goldie (Bowen) Boyd in La Plata, Mo. She attended school in Ottumwa and graduated from Ottumwa High School.

Charliene was united in marriage to Harold J. Sissel on April 16, 1959, in Ottumwa.

While married to Harold, they lived in Ottumwa, LeMars, Mason City, Harlan and later returned to Mason City. Charliene and Harold were later divorced.

Charliene would spend as much time as possible with children; anyone around her knew she loved children.

She was a baby sitter for many families in the Mason City area. Charliene always kept a special place in her heart for all of the children she cared for.

She was a former charter member of the Albia Road Baptist Church and the Eastern Star of Ottumwa.

Charliene was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she taught Sunday school, and a member of the former St. Jude Circle.

Charliene loved flower gardens, particularly snap dragons and petunias.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Cynthia “Cindi” Sissel of Mason City; sisters, Mary Ann Sewll and husband, Bill, of Kansas City, Mo., and Donna Gould and husband, Lloyd, of Mason City; brother, James “Jimmy” Robert Boyd and wife, Marilyn, of Grape-vine, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and dear friends, the Lanceys, of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Scot and Goldie Boyd.

EUGENE A. BALK


MASON CITY — Eugene A. Balk, 67, of 1437 E. State St., died Tuesday (March 23, 2004) at the Heritage Care Center.

A memorial Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Harry Koelker officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank or the Mohawk Booster Club.

Gene was born Aug. 14, 1936, in Waucoma, the son of John and Bathil (Huber) Balk. He graduated from Waucoma High School, Upper Iowa University in 1958 with a bachelor of science degree and Mankato State in 1964 with a master of arts degree.

Gene taught biology and science at Hansell, Iowa, and Pine Island, Minn., before moving to Mason City, where he continued to teach.

In addition to teaching, Gene coached football, wrest-ling, baseball and started the girls cross country program at Mason City High School. He retired in 1998.

Gene was a life member of the NEA, ISEA, the local teacher organization and served on the River City Trees board.

Gene is survived by his wife, Mary Balk, of Mason City; son, Dennis Balk and wife, Connie, of Macomb, Ill.; daughter, Helen Weitzel and husband, Garvin, of Burlington; daughter Anne Arvia and husband, Jack, of Mokena, Ill.; son, Michael Balk and wife, Neyra, of Rowlett, Texas; eight grandchildren, Joshua, Elizabeth and Shannon Balk, Nicholas Weitzel, Amber and Jacob Arvia, Natalie Balk and Katherine Campos.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents.

GEORGE S. ZROSTLIK



GARNER — George S. Zrostlik, 82, of Garner, died Wednesday (March 24, 2004) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

His funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with the Rev. Jerry Blake officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Duncan.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner with a Catholic Workman rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

George Simon Zrostlik, the son of John and Mary (Hadacek) Zrostlik, was born Oct. 28, 1921, at Duncan. He attended the rural schools of Garfield Township and Britt High School.

Following his schooling, he lived and farmed with his parents south of Duncan.

George also helped farm-ers in the area making hay, threshing, corn picking and doing carpentry work.

He lived on the home farm until 1997, when he moved to the Concord Care Center in Garner due to ill health.

George enjoyed fishing and farming.

He was a lifetime member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan and the Catholic Workman Branch 51.

He is survived by his brother, John Zrostlik, of Britt; a sister, Rose Kern, of Wesley; a brother, Paul Zrostlik and wife, Lila, of Garner; nine nieces and nephews, and seven great-nieces and great-nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joe Zrostlik; two sisters, Betty Holecek and Mary Zrostlik; and two brothers-in-law, Ambrose Kern and Ed Holecek.

BUFFALO CENTER — Mardel Alphs, 65, of Woodward, formerly of Buffalo Center, died Wednesday (March 24, 2004) at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

REV. JAMES LOUIS BOSVELD


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Rev. James Louis Bosveld, 56, of Columbus, Ohio, and formerly of Johnstown, Ohio, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Mason City, died Thursday (March 18, 2004) in Columbus.

A memorial service directed by Steve Abbott will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Columbus, 93 W. Weisheimer Road.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Seth Reichenback, attorney for the Rev. Bosveld Memorial Fund for the Open Shelter of Columbus, the Hunger Enough nonprofit book dis-tribution project, or three anti-death penalty projects.

James was born to Louis and Bernice Bosveld on March 28, 1947.

He was a lifelong labor and union activist in Iowa City and Columbus, past president of his AFSCME locals, as a board member instrumental in launching Student Publi-cations Inc.,/Daily Iowan collective bargaining. For 20 years he served the poor as the housing paralegal at Legal Aid Society of Columbus. In that capacity he kept many families and individuals from losing their housing of last resort and helped others gain housing they otherwise wouldn’t have had.

In 2003, after having re-ceived his M.Div. at the Meth-odist Theological School in Ohio, he was ordained as a Unitarian Universalist minister. He was CFO for Pudding House Publications, a highly successful literary publisher run by his wife, Jennifer. For 16 years they owned Pudding House Writers Center and Bed & Breakfast for Writers in Johnstown. The book, “Hunger Enough: Living Spiritually in a Consumer Society,” was dedicated to him, and social justice and intentional living was the focus of his ministry.

He is survived by his be-loved wife, Jennifer Bosveld; his deeply loved stepsons, David Jeffrey (Tina) DeRhodes, Christopher Daniel Groce; six grandchildren whom he adored, Nick and Katie DeRhodes, Krista Hause and Thomas Ball, Hunter Groce and Christina Groce; his father, Louis Bosveld; brothers, Roger (Aggie) Bosveld of Minnea-polis, Minn., and John Bosveld of Dubuque and their children, Jim’s deeply loved nieces and nephews; father-in-law, Robert Otis Miller of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Bernice Bosveld.

RICEVILLE — Charles H. Richardson, 94, of Rice-ville, died Thursday (March 25, 2004) at the Riceville Community Rest Home, in Riceville, of natural causes.

Charles was born on June 17, 1909, in Elma, Iowa, the son of James Francis and Amanda Mary (Weakland) Richardson.

On Oct. 17, 1933, he was united in marriage to Cecelia O’Brien in Elma. To this union four children were born, Irene, Leland, DeLores and William.

He is survived by two children, Irene (Dale) Anderlik, of Riceville, and William (Susan) of Hayfield, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Loretta Gansen, of Lime Springs.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecelia, in 1992; a son, Leland C., in 1999; a daughter, DeLores Stiver, in 2000; an infant grandson, De-land Richardson; two brothers, Arthur and Raymond; and one infant sister, Catherine Richardson.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Riceville.

MASON CITY — Violet “Vi” Ann Bernhardt, 81, of The Willows, 1000 N. Eisenhower Ave. in Mason City, died Wednesday (March 24, 2004) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

The family of Violet Ann Bernhardt has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in her memory.

Violet Ann Bernhardt was born March 2, 1923, the daughter of John and Katherine (Spurgeon) Gedville. She attended and received her education at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Mason City, graduating from St. Joseph’s Catholic High School.

Vi worked at Woolworth’s department store, and Swift Ice Cream Co., both in Mason City. Vi also worked at the Plymouth Locker.

She was united in marriage to Edward Bernhardt on Jan. 24, 1942, at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mason City. He preceded her in death on Oct. 16, 2000.

After their marriage to-gether they farmed in the Plymouth area until her husband retired.

Vi moved to the Willows in Mason City in the summer of 2001.

Vi loved to fish with her husband and going to the cabin she and her husband shared at Lake Kabetogama in northern Minnesota.

She also enjoyed feeding and watching birds and flowers, watching soaps on TV, sewing and cross-stitching.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Plymouth, and after moving to Mason City she attended mass at St. Joseph Catholic’s Church in Mason City.

She is survived by three sons, David (Jeanne) Bernhardt, of Plymouth, Daryl Bernhardt, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mark (Shirley) Bernhardt, of Auburn, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Doug (Susan) Bernhardt, Dan Bernhardt, Julie Bernhardt, Keith Bernhardt and his fiancee, Melissa, Stewart (Stacey) Bernhardt, Megan Bernhardt, Tina (Mark) Mitchell, and Alicia Bernhardt and her fiance, Matt; eight great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward Bernhardt; a grandson; and three sisters, and one brother.

DOROTHY G. MARTINEK


WESLEY — Dorothy G. Martinek, 92, of Wesley, died Friday (March 26, 2004) in Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley with Father Dan Greving and Msgr. Joseph Slepicka officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Wesley.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Wesley with a CDA Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and Guild Prayer Service at 7 p.m.

Dorothy G. Martinek, dau-ghter of Edward and Anna (Blascke) Hauptman, was born March 15, 1912, in Wesley. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wesley. She graduated from Wesley High School in 1929 and Mankato Commercial College in 1931.

Following graduation, Dorothy worked as a typist in Nevada, Iowa. She later moved to Charles City to serve as secretary to the plant manager at Hart-Parr Co. She also traveled through the East selling portraits.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Harold Martinek on Aug. 28, 1945, in Wesley. They made their home in the Doan area on the Martinek farm. It was on this Century Farm that they raised two children, Kim and Jerry Martinek.

She was a true partner in caring for children and helping on the farm. Dorothy and Harold served as hosts to many visits by relatives and friends. Dorothy regretfully moved from the farm to Algona in November 2001.

Her greatest pride was her children and grandchildren.

Dorothy was active in the Doan Federated Woman’s Club, St. Joseph Guild Society, various church and community groups, and was a 50-year-plus member of St. Joseph’s C.D. of A. She was a lifetime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wesley.

Left to cherish the memory of Dorothy is her son, Jerry Martinek, and his wife, Cindy, of Belmond; her grandchildren, Christopher and Katie Martin-ek, of Belmond; sisters, Irma Barton, of Algona, Madelyn Hutchens, of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Delores “Tutie” King, of Coupeville, Wash. Also sur-viving is a special nephew, Gary Hutchens and his wife, Karen, of Mobile, Ala.; a special niece, Barbara Metzger and her husband, Clarence, of Algona, as well as many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and other relatives.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold, in March, 1999; a daughter, Kim; grandson, Jeremy; brothers, Anthony, Raymond, Rudy and Bud, and sisters, Sr. Mary Hemen-egild, Agnes and Clara.

VERVEN KRAFT


KANAWHA — Verven Elroy Kraft, 83, of Kanawha, died Friday (March 26, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Renwick, with the Rev. A. Robert Molldrem and Mr. Lynn Noel officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in rural Renwick.

Friends may greet the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home, 118 E. Second St. in Kanawha, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Verven, the son of Walter and Thelma Irene Schultz Kraft, was born March 16, 2004, in Renwick. He grew up in the Renwick area, where he attended country school. Verven’s mother passed away when he was 11 years old. He later began farming with his father and stepmother.

Verven enjoyed helping his neighbors on the farm whenever possible. He continued to live on the farm until entering the nursing home for the first time. He later became a resident of the Hancock County Care Facility, where he enjoyed caring for the pigs. He then became a long-term resident of the Kanawha Community Home.

Verven loved little children and especially enjoyed spending time with the youngest members of the family.

Verven is survived by three brothers, Kenneth Kraft and his wife, Marian, of Kanawha, Garry Kraft and his wife, Sandy, of Bode, and Donald Kraft and his wife, Carolyn, of Renwick; two sisters, Sandra K. Harris, of Lincoln, Neb., and LuAnn and her husband, Francis Hefty, of Bixby, Okla.; and stepmother, Marjorie Kraft, of Eagle Grove.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, LaVaughn, and brother, Earl.

CHARLES CITY — Funeral services for Jean Marie VanDenBroeke, 65, of Charles City, formerly of Tyler, Minn. will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Dionysius Catholic Church in Tyler, Minn. Interment will be in St. Dionysius Catholic Cemetery in Tyler, Minn.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tyler Area Funeral Home, in Tyler, Minn., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Jean Marie VanDenBroeke was born July 5, 1938, in Tyler, Minn. to Jacob and Mary (Persoon) Bakker. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Dionysius Catholic Church in Tyler. Jean graduated from Tyler High School in 1956.

Jean and her family farmed near Hendricks, Minn., for 12 years and then operated the locker in Lake Benton for a short while.

In 1962, the family moved to an acreage near Charles City, Iowa, and in 1973 they moved into Charles City. While in Charles City, Jean helped in remodeling projects on old buildings.

Jean worked various other jobs while in Iowa. After her children were grown she lived in Boone and Ames.

In 1995, she returned to Tyler, Minn., and lived there until 2000 when she moved back to Charles City.

Jean enjoyed cooking, dancing and traveling all over the United States.

The time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, was most important to her.

Jean had an inviting personality and became friends with everyone she met and always treated them like family.

She was a member of St. Dionysius Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Woman.

On March 27, 2004, Jean Marie VanDenBroeke died at the Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City, at the age of 65 years, 8 months and 22 days.

She is survived by her children Diane Tommingo of Charles City, Donna (Dean) Reicks of Cresco, Dennis (Denise) VanDenBroeke of Clear Lake, Dale (DeNeitt) VanDenBroeke of Spencer, and Dick (Tyna) VanDen-Broeke of Runnels and 15 grandchildren.

She is also survived by her siblings, Yvonne (Don) Wartner of Starbuck, Minn., Joyce (Buzz) Dass of Lake Benton, Jerry (Ellen) Bakker of Sioux Falls, S.D., Jim (JoAnn) Bakker of Worthington, Linda Guild of Tracy, Catherine (Mike) Davis of Farmington, Bonnie (Dave) Gruis of Lake Park, and Barb Hansen and friend, Wayne, of Boulder City, Nev.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Mary Bakker.

OSAGE — Marshal Raymond “Snerd” Green, 68, of Osage, died Sunday evening (March 28, 2004) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with Father Mark Reasoner officiating. Inurnment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church cemetery.

Marshal is survived my his wife, Helen, of Osage; his mother, Marjorie Green, of Stacyville; four daughters, Marsha Stricker and husband, Mike, and Mary Jo Ruehlow and husband, Steve, all of Osage, Marlys Wells and husband, Jim, of Boone, and Jackie McManus and husband, Brad, of Des Moines; and a son, Jim Green, of Philadelphia, Pa.

Marshal dearly loved all of his grandkids, Jerad and Shannon Stricker and Amber, Ashlyn and Alex Ruehlow all of Osage, Chloe and Sam Wells of Boone, and Alyssa and Derek McManus of Des Moines.

Also surviving are three sisters, Dona Kubicek and husband, Pete, of Osage, Sue Gouchee and husband, Chic, of Cedar Rapids and Helen Rogers and husband, Allen, of St. Ansgar; and a brother, Bill Green and wife, Sharon, of Waterloo; as well as many nieces, nephews, and close family friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Green; and a nephew, Kent Kubicek.

Marshal was born March 19, 1936, in New Haven, the son of Paul and Marjorie (Weinschenk) Green.

He married Helen Walter on April 4, 1959, in Austin, Minn.

Marshal worked as contractor carpenter for many years in Osage area.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage and was a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus.

He used his skills as a carpenter to help Habitat for Humanity.

He was a member of AA and an avid card player specializing in cribbage and 500.

Marshal loved to be with his grandkids whether attending their activities, fishing or making origami.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew him and loved him.

Alberta Miller was born Dec. 25, 1914, in rural Dumont, Butler County, the second child of Henry H. and Hattie (Gruis) Miller, and died Sunday (March 28, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

She was baptized on May 4, 1919, and received her education in the country schools near Dumont.

She was united in marriage to Earle Everett Rague in December 1932 at the Reformed Church in Dumont. They made their home in Greene and to this union were born four children. Earle died Oct. 24, 1967.

On Feb. 5, 1973, she was united in marriage to George Kraft at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. George died in October of 1997.

Bertha provided for her family through vegetable gardening, canning, cooking, with the memories of the flavors, smells, and warmth from her kitchen.

She will be remembered as the lady with the green thumb. She worked countless hours on her flower garden, raising house plants and keeping her home immaculate inside and out.

She enjoyed traveling, shopping, and eating out at the Royal Fork and Bonanza.

Bertha always said that she wasn’t going to die because she hadn’t started living.

Living family members include her daughter, Eloise (Robert) O’Brien of Greene; three sons, Eugene (Deanna) Rague of Mason City, Donald (Phyllis) Rague of Charles City, and Roger (Marlene) Rague of Phoenix, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four sisters: Dena Hansen and Kathleen Schempf, both of Lakewood, Colo., Alice (John) Heinz of Charles City, and Lucille Hansen of Waterloo; and two brothers, Daniel Miller of Greene and Les Miller of Portland.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, her parents; three brothers, William, Vernon, and Harry; and a grandson, David Rague.

MASON CITY — Martin Rasmussen, of Mason City, formerly of the Riceville area, died Friday (March 26, 2004) at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn. at the age of 74.

Martin Eugene Rasmussen was born on July 9, 1929, in Crystal Lake, the son of Martin and Winifred Rasmussen.

As a small boy, the family moved to a farm northwest of Riceville, between McIntire and Riceville.

He received his education in the rural school near his home in Mitchell County.

Following his education he started working at the Phillips 66 in Mclntire.

He served in the U.S. Army from January of 1951 until January of 1953, maintaining the Army’s fleet of trucks.

Martin spent most of his life in Mason City area working for many years as a refrigeration mechanic and later, along with his wife, Jane, was owner of Jane R Media, servicing the media needs of the area schools.

Martin became sick and was sent to the V.A. Hospital in Marshalltown and later to the hospital in Minneapolis.

He is survived by his children: Michael Rasmussen of San Diego. Calif., and Maria Anderson of Mason City; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his mother, Winifred Clausen of St. Ansgar; two brothers: Archie Rasmussen of Mason City, and Roger Rasmussen of Nora Springs; and one sister, Darlene Summer of Floyd.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Conway Funeral Home, 407 Woodland Ave. in Riceville, with Michael Carey, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Riceville, officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Riverside Cemetery, with military rites alongside his father.

Alta M. Bonker was born Sept. 22, 1898, in Plymouth.

She was the first child of three children born to William J. and Hulda (Rose) Bonker.

Alta’s parents farmed in the Plymouth area and Alta spoke of her love of the farm throughout her life.

Alta graduated from Plymouth High School.

Following high school, Alta furthered her education at the Teacher’s College in Decorah.

She will be well-remembered for her dedication as a teacher and her love of children.

She taught at Jefferson Elementary School in Mason City for many years.

Alta was decribed as a witty, organized and kind woman. Some of her leisure activities and interests included maintaining a neat and tidy home, cooking, flower gardening, going for walks and reading.

She especially enjoyed sewing and took great pride in sewing many of the costumes for school programs and activities.

Alta was devoted to her faith and church. She was a long-time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason City and taught vacation Bible school for many years.

Alta was also a member of the Mason City Education Association and the Iowa State Teachers Association.

For numerous years, Alta was a volunteer at Good Shepherd Health Center. She gave countless hours of her energy and time to assist anyone in any capacity at Good Shepherd.

Eventually, Alta made Good Shepherd Health Center her home and had been a resident for more than 15 years.

Alta will be missed dearly by her family and friends who have shared in her long life.

She is survived by three cousins, Luella Bouck, of Mason City, FloVilla Butler of Bellview, Neb., and Bonnie Smith of Greeley, Colo. She will be sadly missed by her many friends at Good Shepherd.

HAMPTON — Florence Bernice (Busick) Nolte, 84, most recently a resident of the Hampton Health Care Center and formerly a lifelong resident of the Wright County area, died Monday (March 29, 2004) at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. in Belmond, with the Rev. Paddy Druhl of the Goodell Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Florence Bernice Busick, the daughter of Henry and Minnie (Smith) Busick, was born April 23, 1919, on the family farm in Wright County.

She attended rural school for a number of years.

Following her education, she was employed for a time as hired housekeeper for various residences throughout the area.

Florence was united in marriage to Virgil Samuel Nolte on May 15, 1946, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple farmed and raised their children on their Wright County farm.

Florence was a farm wife and lifelong homemaker.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

She was an excellent baker and loved to make home- made breads, pies and other goods for her family, friends and farm helpers.

Florence was always putting the needs of others before her own.

She was an avid collector of many different nicknacks, including, painted eggs, birds, horses, tigers and a variety of other trinkets.

She enjoyed watching the ducks, sheep and chickens.

In earlier years, she and Virgil loved to go dancing.

Florence enjoyed special times with her family and loved to teach her grandkids nursery rhymes. She belonged to various neighborhood card clubs.

Florence was a member of the Goodell United Methodist Church. She had been a resident of Hampton Health Care since January of this year.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her daughter, Linda Marie (Nolte) Bluhm Kuhlers and her husband, Ron Kuhlers, of Meservey; son, Larry Eugene Nolte, of Belmond; grandchildren, Rebecca Lynn (Bluhm) O’Niell and her husband, Mark, and their son, Logan Thomas O’Niell, of River Falls, Wis., Helen Frances (Nolte) and husband, Troy Buckley, of Indianapolis, Ind., Melissa Ann (Kuhlers) Nixt and husband, David, of Osceola, Travis Eugene Nolte and companion, Katie Gordman and their daughter, of Kaylee Marie Nolte, of Garner, Ryan Lee Kuhlers, of Meservey, and Christopher Cody Nolte of Goodell.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. Paul C. Nelson officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services on Friday.
