CHARLES E. BURT


MASON CITY — Charles E. Burt, 68, of 2317 24th Street S.W., Mason City, died Thursday (March 4, 2004) at the U.S.A. Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Hogan- Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Joel Dahlen of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Mason City officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the chapel, and one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the chapel.

Following the funeral service, his body will be donated to the Mayo Hospital Department of Anatomy in Roch-ester, Minn., to help with the eradication of diseases.

Charles E. Burt was born on Aug. 17, 1935, in Clear Lake, the son of Merle and Alma (Pitzrick) Burt. He attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason City High School in 1953. After graduating from high school, he learned the carpentry trade business in Mason City and was a union carpenter for 20 years. In the early 1970’s he owned and operated C&R Construction Company for six years before starting the C&R Excavating Company in Mason City, and was the owner for 23 years until his retirement in 2000.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, working, operating his equipment, going to casinos and enjoyed having coffee with his friends at McDonald’s in Mason City.

He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Mason City, and a former member of the Carpenters Local Union 1313, and the Mason City Garden Club.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Rosemary Burt, of Mason City; a son, Roger Burt, of Plymouth; two grandchildren, Matthew and Chase Burt, both of Plymouth; nieces and nephews, Sandy Shurtleff of Parkersburg, Frank Koppen of Swaledale, Sy Koppen of Cedar Rapids, Everett Koppen and his wife, Barbara, of Des Moines, and Merle Koppen of Lakota; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Mae Koppen; and a brother-in-law, Parker Koppen.

MASON CITY — Linda Kay Revland, 58, of Mason City, died Thursday (March 4, 2004) at USA Healthcare, Mason City.

Funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Myron Herzberg, of Memorial Lutheran Church, Nevada, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from noon until the time of service Monday at the funeral chapel.

Memorials may be given to the Linda Kay Revland Memorial Fund.

RENWICK — Roland W. “Hohney” Hohensee, 67, of Renwick, died Thursday (March 4, 2004) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

His funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Renwick, with the Revs. Robert Dodge and Karen Dearchs officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

AUSTIN, Minn. — Carol R. Fisher, 55, of 206 First St., S.W., Austin, Minn., died Wednesday (March 3, 2004) at Austin Medical Center.

Carol’s body was cremated and a memorial service will take place at a later date. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City.

Memorials may be directed to the Mayo Clinic Foundation.

Carol was born on Aug. 17, 1948, to William and Olga (Moen) Fisher in Mason City. She had an international upbringing and became fluent in many languages. She enjoyed reading, painting and making cards.

She is survived by her sister, Frances Fisher, of Pacific Palisades, Calif., and her brother, William Irving Fisher Jr., of El Segundo, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

VERNA ‘JANE’ O’DELL


MASON CITY — Verna “Jane” O’Dell, of 5 25th St. S.W., Mason City, passed away Wednesday evening (March 3, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Full-erton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. The Ladies of the Moose will conduct a memorial service at 5 p.m. today followed by the VFW Auxillary service at 5:30 p.m. both at the funeral home.

Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday.

Verna Jane O’Dell was born Jan. 17, 1929, in Mason City, to Ellsworth “Bud” and Pauline Marie (Presnell) Hall. She was the first of six children born to her parents. “Jane,’’ as she was lovingly known by her family and friends, was educated in the Mason City Community Schools.

On Jan. 14, 1946, Jane was united in marriage to Fred LeRoy O’Dell, Jr., in Mason City. The couple enjoyed bowling in leagues at the Rose Bowl Lanes in Mason City, camping, fishing and traveling together to various vacation spots across the United States and into Canada.

Jane and Fred’s home was, “The Place to Be,” as many of their neighbors, friends and their children’s friends felt welcome and gathered often in the O’Dell home. They were the proud parents of five children.

Many in the Mason City area will remember Jane as a seamstress at Mode O’Day, where she was employed for more than 30 years.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, and a member of the Christian Women’s Group and the Moose Lodge.

Jane was a devoted wife and took great pride in nurturing her children. She found great joy in crocheting special heirlooms for her family. Jane intricately crocheted the family name into a framed wall hanging for each of her family members to treasure.

Her children recall special thoughts of their mother cook-ing large evening meals. They think of her fondly when re-membering her baked beans, biscuits, chocolate cakes, fried potatoes and potato soup. Jane loved preparing for the holidays and having her family gather for those occasions in her home.

Some of Jane’s favorite leisure activities and interests included playing cribbage and bingo. She was also an avid “Yahtzee” challenger and fan of the Minnesota Vikings. Jane gathered with friends once a week to visit, lunch and play games of “Aggrevation.”

Jane will be missed dearly by family and friends who have lovingly shared in her life.

She is survived by her five children, Pam Richardson, of Leland, Gary O’Dell, of Mason City, Kathy (Chuck) Green-awalt, of Pittsburg, Pa., Dan (Paulie) O’Dell, of Clear Lake, and Julie (Tony) Scalise, of Coralville; two sisters, Donna (Bill) O’Dell, of Mason City, and Ginny (John) Young, of Rockwell; one brother, Bob (Wendy) Hall, of Bullhead City, Ariz.; and special family friend, Julie Gallager. Jane will also be sadly missed by her 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Jane is preceded in death by her husband, Fred O’Dell, Jr., on Jan. 4, 1985; her parents, Bud and Pauline Hall; her brother, Allen Hall; her sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Frank Buyonavich; and her granddaughter, Lori Banks.

JAMES W. BOBST


HAMPTON — James W. Bobst, 71, of Hampton, died Thursday (March 4, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Hampton United Metho-dist Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Bob Connor officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Hampton Cemetery in Hampton.

Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

James was born on May 30, 1932, in Franklin County, the son of Albert William Bobst and Edythe Lindsay. He at-tended Popejoy High School and Iowa State University in Ames.

He was a member of the ROTC at Iowa State University in Ames.

James was united in marriage to Ardith Faber Hill in 1954. To this union three children were born: Randal, Jane and Debra.

James then married Kathy Ann Becker on April 15, 1970, in Las Vegas, Nev. To this union two children were born: Angela and John.

His occupation was in real estate and farm management.

He was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church in Hampton, the Hampton Rotary Club, and the Anchor Lodge in Hampton.

James was on the Franklin General Hospital Board of Trustees from 1976 to 2000, and was on the Franklin General Hospital Foundation.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Ann (Kate) Bobst, of Hampton; daughter, Angela Michele and husband, Craig Menning, of Hampton; son, John Albert and wife, Kelli Bobst, of Coralville; son, Randal James Bobst, of Lake-ville, Minn.; daughter, Jane Marie and husband, Steven Haviland, of Hampton; dau-ghter, Debra Sue and husband, Tim Primus, of Lakeville, Minn.; sister, Nada and husband, Paul Bottke, of Iowa Falls; sister, Amy Campbell, of Iowa Falls; sister, Elsie and husband, Dean Lycke, of Alden; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dale; and sister, Doris.

BERNICE LENORE LUCKEN


KENSETT — Bernice Lenore Lucken, 95, of Kensett, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 6, 2004, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Bethany Lutheran Church, 600 Fifth St. in Kensett, with the Reverend Clarence Baal-son officiat-ing. Interment will follow at Kensett Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at noon on Monday at the church and continue until the time of the service.

Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Springs Street, Manly, is in charge of the service.

Memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Retirement Home or Bethany Lutheran Church.

Bernice was born June 13, 1908, in rural Kensett, a dau-ghter of Arne and Caroline (Severson) Luckason. Her paternal grandparents, Andrew and Margit Luckason and her maternal grandparents, Erich and Hanna Severson, all emigrated from Norway in 1867 to become some of the first settlers of Kensett Township.

After graduating from Northwood High School, Bernice taught in a rural Worth County school until her marriage to Palmer Lucken on Nov. 27, 1926. They engag-ed in farming east of Kensett for many years.

Bernice has been a resident of the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood for the past three years.

She was a life-long mem-ber of Bethany Lutheran Church, a former member of the Bethany Ladies Aid and of the Martha Mission Circle, and a member of the Kensett Centennial planning committee. She was an accomplished seamstress, quilter and artist.

Bernice is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Jeannine and George Wendel, of Mason City, and Carolyn and Gerard Rushton, of Iowa City; a daughter-in-law, Marian Lucken, of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Tanya Wendel, of Omaha, Neb., Kim Wendel, of Clear Lake, Valerie Wendel-Filkens, of Omaha, Neb., Lonn Lucken and Lamarr Lucken, both of Cedar Rapids, Edward Rushton and his wife, Kristi, of Scranton, Pa., and John Rushton, of Iowa City; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Donn Lucken; one brother, Lester Luckason; two sisters, Alice Dahl and Hazel Luckason; and two infant grandchildren.

NORTHWOOD — Adrian E. Ringham, 78, of Northwood, died Friday (March 5, 2004) at his birth home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Mark Decker officiating. Inurnment will be in the Silver Lake Cemetery, rural Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South, Northwood.

Adrian E. Ringham was born Nov. 30, 1925, the son of Andrew and Emma (Lokken) Ringham. He was baptized at Silver Lake Lutheran Church, and attended and graduated from the Northwood school system in 1943. When he was old enough to drive, he always gave neighborhood kids rides to school.

Following high school, Adrian entered the National Guard where he served as a master sergeant for four years.

Farming was his passion. After he came home from the service, Adrian farmed with his father, and later took over the farming operation. Adrian also raised hogs and beef cattle over the years

On June 28, 1953, he was united in marriage to Helen Tollefson in Austin, Minn. The couple lived in Northwood for a few years before moving back to the home place west of Northwood. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last June with a large gathering at their home.

Adrian loved the farm, and always said the best part of going on vacation was coming home. He enjoyed many hobbies including golf, playing solitare, fishing, and ongoing home improvement projects at all three of his grown children’s homes. He also enjoyed woodworking and made numerous keepsakes for family and friends.

Helping others was one of Adrian’s greatest gifts, a gift that will live on in all who he touched.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Helen Ringham, of Northwood; three children, Marty Ringham and his wife, Teri, of Milaca, Minn., Amy Thorland and her husband, Steve, of Thompson, and Terry Ringham and his wife, Rachel, of Lake Mills; seven grandchildren, Adam, Tony, and Karly Ringham, Tonnes and Tristan Thorland, and Zachary and Jonah Ringham; three sisters-in-law, Lois and her husband, Don Purcell, of San Diego, Calif., Phyllis Kittleson, of St. Ansgar, and Mary Lou and her husband, Merv Ellingson, of Decorah.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother-in-law, Paul Tollefson.

MASON CITY — Charlene Rae (Whitman) Jensen, 66, of Mason City, died Friday (March 5, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services for Charlene will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Terry Hamilton Poore of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be dir-ected to Hospice of North Iowa.

Charlene Rae Whitman was born on Jan. 7, 1938, the daughter of Lester Whitman and Gladys (Mulford) Whitman Seefeld in Iowa Falls. She attended school in Iowa Falls and was a 1956 graduate of Iowa Falls High School.

On April 20, 1958, Charlene was united in marriage to James Jensen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Charlene and James lived in Iowa Falls until 1964 when they moved to Albert Lea, Minn., then moving to Mason City in 1985.

Charlene was a loving and caring wife and mother, keeping an immaculate home for her family. She shared almost 46 years of marriage with her husband.

For the first twenty years of Dave and Pam’s lives, Charlene was our mother and educator, and the rest of her life she was our best friend. We could share anything with her and had many happy times laughing and loving. She adored her grandchildren and her only regret was not to be here for them. Charlene will be caring for her grandchildren, Mathew and Benjamin, in heaven for us now.

Charlene was very active with E.G.A. (Embroiderers Guild of America) and was an avid stitcher. She also gave of her time, volunteering for the hospital.

Charlene and Jim both are active in the Railroad Retired Employees Group.

She touched the hearts of many people and will leave a lasting impression on each of them. Charlene will be dearly missed by her family. They are comforted knowing she is no longer in pain.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to all of the staff of Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa and Hospice of North Iowa who cared for Charlene and her family during this difficult time.

Charlene is survived by her husband, James Jensen, of Mason City; one daughter, Pamela Rohrbacher and husband, John, of Minneapolis, Minn.; one son, David Jensen and wife, Kathryn, of Blaine, Minn.; three grandchildren, Adam Rohrbacher, and Pearl and Neal Jensen; one brother, Wilbur Whitman and wife, Darlene, of Belle Vista, Ark., and several other family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and grandsons, Mathew and Benjamin.

DONALD DEAN WILLIAMSON


GLENVILLE, Minn. — Funeral services for Donald D. Williamson, 78, of Glenville, will be held at 10 a.m. on Tues-day at the Glenville United Methodist Church. Pastor Don Malinsky will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Freeborn County Servicemen’s Organization.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Bayview- Freeborn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Donald died on Friday (March 5, 2004) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Donald Dean Williamson was born on March 19, 1925, in Glenville, the son of Ernest and Fannie Grace (Kral) Williamson. He attended Glenville grade school and Albert Lea High School.

Donald served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. After his discharge, he returned to Freeborn County.

On Jan. 2, 1944, Donald was united in marriage to Evelyn M. Tostenson. Donald owned and operated the local grocery store for 26 years, owned and drove his school bus, hauled mail and retired from Ulland Bros. in June, 2002, where he was a scale man and loader operator. Donald also worked on the Alaskan pipeline as a younger man.

Donald enjoyed fishing, woodworking, gardening, and most special to him was the time that he would spend talking with his grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling around the county sightseeing, and he and Evelyn enjoy-ed the times that they spent at Mystic Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, of Glenville; children, Dianne and husband, Larry Roerish, of Rochester, Adeline and husband, John Rust, of Clarks Grove, Dawn Knaack, of Glenville, Mary Ann Olson, of Albert Lea, Donald William-son and Mary, of Allison, Douglas Williamson, of Federal Dam, Minn., and Jim and wife, Cindy, Williamson of Glenville; grandchildren, Chad and wife, Sherry, Williamson, Tonya Williamson, Eric Roerish, Elissa Roerish, Brandon Cech, Barry and wife, Katie, Cech, Katie Rust, Cody Knaack and special friend, Jill, and her son, Wyatt, Jesse Knaack, Jackie Knaack, Aaron Williamson, Lindy Williamson, Josh and Jenny Reyerson, Seth Olson, Nara Olson, and Derek Olson; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Dylan, Michael, Jadelyn, Caden and Brayden; brothers, twin brother, Dayton and wife, Margaret, Williamson, of Alexandria, Minn., and Richard and wife, Mary, Williamson, of Albuquerque, N.M.; brothers-in-law, Donald and wife, Linda, Janssen, of Northwood, Iowa, and Eddie and wife, Karen, Tostenson, of Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews.

Linda Kay Revland was born June 2, 1945, in Mason City, a daughter of Claude and Angeline (Brouwer) Miller.

She was united in marriage to Joe Shafer on July 11, 1964, in Des Moines.

Linda was a 1964 graduate of Northwood-Kensett High School in Northwood. She attended North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City.

Linda’s life was centered on her family. She especially loved her grandchildren. Her hobbies included crafts, country music, and bingo.

She is survived by, a dau-ghter, Brenda Kiger, of Monroe City, Mo., and her children, Justin, Cory, and Bree; daughter, Karla (Shafer) Sexton of Ames, and her children, Krista, Amber, and Jordan; daughter, Vicky (Shafer) Alitz, of Mason City, and her children, Anthony, Dylan, and Brittany; daughter, Angela Clapp, of Waterloo; two sisters, Phyllis Auld, of Highland, Ind., and Janice Snook, of Mason City; and a sister-in law, Bonnie Willemsen, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a step-father, Harold Bratrud; and three brothers, Byron Miller, Wayne Willemsen and Marvin Willemsen.

RUSSELL W. FELIX


MASON CITY — Russell W. Felix, 83, of Mason City, died at Veterans Hospital, Minneapolis, on Thursday (Feb. 26, 2004).

He originally grew up in Britt. He graduated from Mason City High School in the Class of 1938, attended Iowa State University in Ames, specializing in dairy products, and later worked for the Borden Co. and R.S. Prewett Co.

He was a World War II Army artil-lary veteran, landing at Utah Beach Normandy and fought later in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, lifelong member of VFW Post 733 in Mason City, 50-year member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, and longtime former member (40 years) of the YMCA in Mason City.

He is survived by: Evelyn (nee Barsness) his beloved wife of 58 years; daughters, Linda Kirton, of San Diego, Calif., Jane and husband, the Reverend Robert Burmeister A.R.C., of Roseville, Minn.; sons, Mark and wife, Ellen, of Stoughton, Wis., and David and wife, Sandra, of Maple Grove, Minn. Also, nine grand-children; two great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Doris (the late Richard) Felix, Lannie (the late Norman) Barsness, and Buelah (the late Leon) Barsness.

Randy was born July 21, 1962, in Mason City, the son of James and Valera (Rooks) Coyier.

Randy began his special education in Mason City and then moved to Comprehensive Systems in Charles City. He later moved to Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, and has spent the last seven years, due to his health, in Good Shepherd Health Care in Mason City.

He enjoyed listening to country music, especially Kenny Rogers, collecting caps, Smurfs and watching sports with his father. On Sunday mornings, he enjoyed watching “CBS News Sunday Morning” with Charles Kuralt. He enjoyed being around small children and animals. Over the years, he enjoyed participating in Special Olympics and winning medals.

Randy will be sadly missed by his father, James Coyier and his wife, Phyllis, Albertville, Minn.; his mother, Valera (Val) Hovelson and her husband, James, Clear Lake; his sister, Dawn Brosdahl and her husband, Jody, Thornton; step-sisters, Lisa Nelson and her husband, Neal, Belmond, Ann Brown and her husband, Chris, Dahlonega, Ga., and Lisa Wilson and her husband, Scott, Alexandria, Minn.; two step-brothers, Sean Oudekerk and his wife, Karen, Zimmerman, Minn., and Tony Oudekerk, Burnsville, Minn.; two nephews, Tad and Trent Brosdahl; godmother, Marjorie Toft, Savage, Minn., and godparents, Gary and JoAnn Hughes, Peoria, Ariz.; two step-grandmothers, Lorraine (Rooks) Woiwod, Clear Lake, and Vida Hovelson, Clear Lake; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

On July 1, 1967, Donna was united in marriage to Wayne Harper in the Aredale Methodist Church in Aredale.

She was a bookkeeper for the elevators in Aredale and Sheffield, and she also ran her own bookkeeping business.

Donna enjoyed matting and framing, quilting, gardening, working on the acreage, playing on the computer, reading and spending time with family, friends and her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Harper, of rural Sheffield; daughters, Denise Harper and significant other, Angela Lillebo, of Ames, and Jodie Coe and husband, Mark, of Carmel, Ind.; son, Shawn Harper and wife, Erica, of Fort Smith, Ark.; mother, Shirley Hansen, of Aredale; sisters, Sheryl Ayers and husband, Ken, of Bristow, and Nancy Kling, of Davenport; grandchildren, Nicholas and Alexis Harper, of Fort Smith, Ark., and Starlene Walton, of Cedar Rapids.

BRITT — Robert L. Johnson, 77, of Britt, passed away Saturday (March 6, 2004) at his home in Britt.

Robert L. Johnson, the son of John B. and Estella (Duncan) Johnson, was born May 9, 1926, on the farm southwest of Britt. He attended country schools in Boone and Erin Township. Bob was baptized, confirmed and a member of the Stilson E.U.B. Church, later transferring to the United Methodist Church in Britt.

On March 24, 1947, Bob and Elizabeth L. (Bettie) Harriman were married at the Little Brown Church, in Nashua. To this union Lee, John B. and Scott were born. Bob and Bettie lived and farmed south of Britt until 1992, when they moved into town.

Bob was a custom operator in corn shelling, combining, and trucking from the late 1940s until the mid-1990s, along with farming.

Bob’s life centered around his family, friends, and anything to do with farming. He was very proud of his three sons and their families. No person was a stranger very long, as he loved to visit with people. Bob liked to bowl, camp, and go on “crop checking” rides.

Bob is survived by his wife, Elizabeth L. (Bettie) Johnson, of Britt; three sons, Lee (Chris) Johnson, of Richburg, S.C., John B. (Linda) Johnson and their daughter, Whitney, of Britt, and Scott (Tammy) Johnson and their sons, Ryan and Justin, of Britt; aunt, Mrs. L.P. Ben was born Jan. 14, 1917, the son of John L. and Almeda S. (Nordstrom) Curran in Mason City.

He attended schools in Owen and Mason City and would later attend Iowa State University.

Ben was united in marriage to Katherine “Kaye” Bisgrove on Nov. 25, 1942, in Mason City. He and his wife farmed southeast of Mason City for many years and were in the cattle breeding business.

Ben was a member of First United Methodist Church, and served as the Director of the Portland Co-op. He also was a past 4-H leader, and director of the Iowa Polled Hereford Association.

Ben was a member of the Iowa Cattlemens Association and served on the Agriculture Advisory Board for North Iowa Area Community College.

He enjoyed fox, deer and pheasant hunting and was a supporter of the 4-H youth throughout the years.

Ben was also inducted into the Iowa Polled Hereford Association Hall of Fame.

APLINGTON — Helen Sarah “Sally” Corsello, 77, of Aplington, was born the daughter of Henry Hollen and Mattie Randall Magner on April 21, 1926, in Waterloo.

She received her education in the Waterloo schools and attended Hawkeye Technical College.

Sally was united in marriage with Russell Turner in November of 1944. They later divorced. To this union, one son, Russell Michael Turner, was born.

On April 14, 1973, she married Dominic J. Corsello at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in Waterloo until her husband transferred as postmaster to Aplington in 1977, where he retired in 1989 after 44 years of service.

Sally worked at factories in Anderson, Ind., and Waterloo, during World War II, then later at Cutler Hardware in Waterloo.

She was a sincere Christian. She was active in the Aplington Women’s Club.

She especially enjoyed reading, needlework, crossword puzzles, playing cards, bowling and her cats.

Sally died Sunday (March 7, 2004) at Maple Manor Care Center in Aplington of natural causes.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one step-daughter, Patricia Corsello, who died on Dec. 7, 2003.

She is survived by her husband, Dominic Corsello, of Aplington; and one son, Russell (Sharon) Turner, Omaha, Neb.; two stepsons, James (Sharon) Corsello, of Mason City, and Dominic (Tracy) Corsello, of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Michael John (Alena) Turner, of Salem, Ore. and Ausha Kirby; nine step-grandchildren, James (Terri) Corsello Jr.; Anthony (Kathy) Corsello; Christine Corsello; James (Dana) Mather; Benjamin Mather, Michelle Mather, Denise Schumacher, Desiree Menchaca, and Perri O’quinn; one great-grandchild and nine step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marian (Gilbert) Stoddard, of Jesup.

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — It is in sorrow we report the passing of a longtime resident of Mason City, Iowa, Shirley Anne Berry, 76, a resident of Sylmar and recently of Northridge, Calif., who died from complications due to a resurgence of cancer of the colon at her home in Northridge on Feb. 27, 2004. She had battled and survived cancer of the colon in the spring of 2002.

Shirley was born the seventh of twelve children to William Johnson and Jennie Almeda (Randall) Easley on March 13, 1927, in Mason City. She grew up in North Central Iowa where she received her education and attended Mason City High School. The family had many interesting experiences in those early days and it was most interesting to hear Shirley tell of the development of Mason City and Cerro Gordo County that she had witnessed while growing into womanhood.

On Dec. 21, 1945, she eloped to Kahola, Mo., and was united in marriage to Robert Richard “Bud” Beery and was blessed with a wedded life of 23 years before his death on Jan. 6, 1968.

To this union four children were born.

After Bud’s death, Shirley was employed as a housekeeper for many years before being employed by the Los Angeles County Courts until her retirement in 1987.

Survivors include two children, the Rev. Robert Richard Beery Jr. and his wife, Billie Jeanne (Tedder) of Mason City, and Mrs. Lawrence Albert (Lucinda Lou (Berry) Goebel Jr. of Northridge, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Douglas Dean (Dianna Kay (Steiner) Beery, of Forest Lake, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Dennis Dewayne (Ruth Ann (Sellers) Beery, of Mason City; two brothers, Robert W. (Wilma J.) Myers of Brightwood, Va.; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud; two sons, Dennis on Jan. 7, 1995 and Douglas on Sept. 6, 2003; four brothers, Raymond Easley, Leonard M. (Jack) Easley, Donald D. Easley and Clifford L. Easley; two sisters, Betty J. Easley and Ollie M. Andrews.

Shirley had a heart of gold and was well known for caring for other people and for her family. She led a busy, useful life and was an honored citizen and she will be greatly missed, not only by her family, but also by a wide circle of warm friends.

She was a member of T.O.P.S. International for more than 30 years.

Shirley accepted Christ as her savior at an early age and united as a charter member of the Temple Baptist Church in Mason City, eventually transferring her membership to Sylmar Baptist Church. She served the Lord in many capacities but most of all as a Sunday school teacher for more than 35 years.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Eternal Valley Memorial Park Chapel in Newhall, Calif. Burial will be in Eternal Valley Memorial Park in Newhall, Calif.

THEODORE ‘TED’ SAUCKE

CLEAR LAKE — Theodore “Ted” Saucke, 87, passed away Sunday (March 7, 2004) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. There will be a 3 p.m. graveside remembrance service Monday at the Gowrie Cemetery in Gowrie.

Friends may greet the family from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Theodore Henry Saucke was born Sept. 14, 1916, the son of Marie Schnormeier Saucke and Henry Saucke. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a graduate of American Institute of Business in Des Moines.

Ted married Beatrice Hanson on June 28, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church in Gowrie. He was in the retail hardware business in Clear Lake for many years, built numerous residences in the Clear Lake area and also built travel trailers in Elkhart, Ind.

He took pride in providing years of fireworks entertainment for Clear Lake’s July 4 celebrations and other local activities, and with his wife, Bea, he enjoyed his hobbies of riding motor scooters, riding Harleys and flying their Cessna.

His surviving family includes wife, Bea; and daughters, Linda (Tom) Sage of Mason City, Lois (Serge) Saucke-Lacelle of Montreal/Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, and Rhonda Saucke of Clear Lake. His grandchildren are Renay (Tom) Nestvedt of Mason City, Matt (Jessy) Sage of Chicago, Ill., and Erin, Amy and Erik Lacelle, all of Montreal/Sherbrooke. Tyler and Justis Nestvedt of Mason City are his great-grandchildren.

Also left to mourn his passing are his five sisters, LaVern Urelius of Farnhamville, Aneta Nelson of Greenfield, Cletis Nutting of Mesa, Ariz., Inez Estlund of Atlanta, Ga., and Imogene Rohovit of St. Paul, Minn., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents, sister Evelyn; and brothers, Omar and Orlan.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to two of his dear friends, Pastor Kermit Roisen and Hospice volunteer Don Paulsen, and to the staff at Oakwood, Heritage and Hospice.

LAKE MILLS — Nola F. Seifert, 67, of 501 N. Mills St., Lake Mills, formerly of 1500 N. Quincy Ave., died Sunday evening (March 7, 2004) surrounded by family at her home in Lake Mills.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W. in Mason City, with the Rev. Sarah Rohret-Odoom officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.

Nola Faye Seifert was born one of 10 children to Wayne and Estella (Allen) Arhart on July 25, 1936. She attended the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock High School.

In addition to selling Avon, she was employed as a cafeteria worker at Newman Catholic School and North Iowa Area Community College.

Nola read romance novels for her own enjoyment and was quite talented in working with crafts, especially holiday crafts.

She was a kind-hearted person and enjoyed being with family and friends.

Her interests and leisure activities included spending time outdoors, camping, special times of baking and cooking for her family, clipping coupons from the newspaper, and calling the family to let them know that the coffee was on and invite them over to her house for a cup.

She lived most of her life in Mason City.

Those thankful for sharing Nola’s life include her children, Randall (Gayle) Shores of Huntley, Ill., William (Keelie) Shores Jr. of Lake Mills, and Douglas Shores and Pamela (Jackie) Frank of Lake Mills; her sisters, Eleanore Bramlett of Cavina, Calif., and Joyce Hilton of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren, Tara Frank, JoAnn Frank, Eric Shores, Rachel Shores and Ryan Shores; two great-grandchildren, Trevor John Rose and Mckayla Jean Kane.

HAMPTON — Harvey Wilbur Myers, 66, of Dallas Center, formerly of Hampton, died Sunday (March 7, 2004) at the McAllen Medical Center in McAllen,Texas.

He was born on June 22, 1937, in Mitchell, Iowa, to Harvey William and Nellie Ruth (Nichols) Myers.

He received his education at the Algona schools. He served in the United States Army.

Harvey was united in marriage on Sept. 21, 1957 in Garner to Susan J. Haberkamp.

He was a salesman at North Central Farm Service in Hampton.

He was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church.

HAMPTON — Arnold W. Rodemeyer, 83, of Hampton, died Tuesday (March 9, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Karl Bollhagen officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, Latimer.

Arnold W. Rodemeyer was born June 1, 1920, in Marshalltown, to Ernest and Amanda (Rathman) Rodemeyer.

He attended Eastward Country School.

He served in the U.S. Navy for 4½ years during World War II. Arnold took great pride in being a naval aviation mechanic at the rank of a chief petty officer.

He was united into marriage to Julie Marian Nolte on June 10, 1950. They had two sons, Jeff and Brian.

On Dec. 28, 1994, in Mesa, Ariz., he married Marie (Paullus) Arctander of Des Moines.

Arnold farmed for 43 years southwest of Hampton.

He enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, playing pool and cribbage and the winter months in Mission, Texas.

He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Latimer, and later became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Rodemeyer, of Hampton; two sons, Jeffrey and wife, Peggy Rodemeyer, of Mesa, Ariz., and Brian and his wife, Sande Rodemeyer, of Algona; stepdaughter, Julie and husband, Joe Coy, of West Des Moines; brother, Marvin and wife, Patty Rodemeyer, of Hampton; two sisters, Verna and husband, Bob Mahncke, of Hampton, and Marlys Rodemeyer, of Edina, Minn.; grandson, John and wife, Jenelle Rodemeyer, of Mesa, Ariz.; granddaughter, Jennifer and husband, Lou Datilio, North Hampton, N.H; granddaughter, Jill Rodemeyer, of Mesa, Ariz.; granddaughter, Abby Rodemeyer, of Algona; grandson, Tim Rodemeyer, of Algona; stepgrandchildren, Spencer, Riley and Connor Coy, all of West Des Moines; as well as other family and friends.

NORTHWOOD — Emma Josephine Holtan, 101, of Northwood, died Monday (March 8, 2004) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St. in Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Emma Josephine Holtan was born on Dec. 13, 1902, in rural Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Stryk and Christina (Juelson) Sollien. She attended rural school in Decorah and graduated from Luther Academy in Albert Lea, Minn., in 1922.

After completing her schooling, she taught in rural Freeborn County, Minn., from 1922 to 1936.

She was united in marriage to Hamlin Holtan on July 8, 1936, in rural Decorah. After their marriage, they moved to Northwood where Emma worked as a clerk at O’Bruns department store for 20 years until her retirement.

She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, and quilting, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.

She was a member of first Lutheran Church in Northwood and was very active within the church, being a member of her church circle, was superintendent of the Sunday school for many years, as well as a member of other clubs in the church.

She was also a member of the Seimper Fidelis Club in Northwood, and was an active volunteer at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Emma was also very actively involved with other church and civic organizations in Northwood.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Dorothy Bye and her husband, Bill, of Milwaukee, Wis.; and a son, Robert Holtan and his wife, Judy, of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Bill Bye Jr. and his wife, Judie, of Mukwonago, Wis., Julie Mathews and her husband, Kevin, of Denver, Colo., and Haven Holtan and her fiance, Eric Seabel, of Denver, Colo.; two great-grandsons, Owen and Cole Mathews, both of Denver, Colo.; many nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Hamlin, who died on Jan. 15, 1988; two brothers, and four sisters.

CLEAR LAKE — Richard “Dick” Oulman, 82, of 510 Buddy Holly Place, Clear Lake, died Monday (March 8, 2004) at his home.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with military honors conducted by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Dick was born June 8, 1921, in Rock Falls, the son of Nathan R. and Alma Julia (Howe) Oulman. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1941 and was a member of the 1940 Mason City basketball team state champs, which was known as the Fab 5.

Dick served in the United States Navy during World War II on a submarine, the U.S.S. Tuna, as an electrician.

Dick married Elizabeth Shovein Nov. 27, 1945, in Mason City. He worked with his mother in the real estate business.

In 1955, he built and operated Melodee Lanes in Clear Lake. In 1965, they moved to Florida and then returned to Clear Lake in 1977, where he again owned and operated Melodee Lanes until his retirement.

He enjoyed gardening, watching sports, especially the Cubs, and family get- togethers.

Dick is survived by three children, Stephen Oulman and his wife, Kathy, of Mason City, Julia Oulman, of St. Paul, Minn., and Patricia Berge and her husband, James, of Clear Lake; his brother, Gene Oulman and his wife, Vi, of Owatonna, Minn.; 11 grandchildren: Beayonka Poulson and her husband, Tim, Jill Oulman, Annie Kollman, Jonathon Kollman, Casey Oulman, BriAnne Kollman, Kelly Geerlings, Keri Oulman, Teayona Oulman, Nathan Oulman and Carlos Oulman; and six great-grandchildren, Trysten Swanson, Kyren Valentine, Myah Brierly, Skylar Blunt, Kein Valentine and Avery Geerlings.

She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star. She was also a avid reader.
