THE REV. JAMES LOUIS BOSVELD

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Rev. James Louis Bosveld, 56, of Columbus, Ohio, and formerly of Johnstown, Ohio, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday (March 18, 2004) in Red Oak, Iowa.

A memorial service directed by Steve Abbott will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Columbus, Ohio, at 93 W. Weisheimer Road.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Seth Reichenback, attorney for the Rev. Bosveld Memorial Fund for the Open Shelter of Col-umbus, the Hunger Enough nonprofit book distribution project, or three anti-death penalty projects.

James was born in Red Oak, to Louis and Bernice Bosveld on March 28, 1947.

He was a life-long labor and union activist in Iowa City and Columbus, past president of his AFSCME locals, as board member, in-strumental in launching Student Publications Inc., Daily Iowan collective bargaining. For twenty years he served the poor as the housing paralegal at Legal Aid Society of Columbus. In that capacity he kept many families and indviduals from losing their housing of last resort and helped others gain housing they otherwise wouldn’t have.

In 2003 after having receiv-ed his master of divinity de-gree at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, he was ordained as a Unitarian Universalist minister. He was CFO for Pudding House Publications, a highly succesful literary publisher run by his wife, Jennifer. For 16 years they owned Pudding House Writers Center and Bed & Breakfast for Writers in Johnstown, Ohio. The book, “Hunger Enough: Living Spiritually in a Consumer Society” was dedicated to him. Social justice and intentional living was the focus of his ministry.

He is survived by his be-loved wife, Jennifer Bosveld; his deeply loved stepsons, David Jeffrey (Tina) DeRhodes and Christopher Daniel Groce; six grand-children whom he adored, Nick and Katie De-Rhodes, Krista Hause and Thomas Ball, Hunter Groce and Christina Groce; his father, Louis Bosveld; brothers, Roger (Aggie) Bosveld of Minneapolis and John Bosveld of Dubuque and their children, Jim’s deeply loved nieces and nephews; father-in-law, Robert Otis Miller of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Bernice Bosveld.

ELEANOR S. BARNETT


MASON CITY — Eleanor S. Barnett, 72, of 305 20th Place S.W., died Friday (March 19, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A summer service honor-ing the memory of Eleanor and her husband, Roland, is planned for 10 a.m. Friday, June 25 at University Park Cemetery, University Park, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed to either of her two favorite charities, the American Red Cross, Cape Fear Chapter, 1102 S. 16th Street, Wilmington, N.C. 28401, or Hospice of North Iowa, 232 Second Street S.E., Mason City, IA 50401.

Eleanor was born September 16, 1931, in Malcom, Iowa, to Homer James Mc-Caulley and Mabel (Hartzell) McCaulley. Her grandparents were Joseph and Harriet (Smith) McCaulley and John Newton and Shirley (Sisco) Hartzell. Eleanor grew up in University Park and graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1950.

On October 10, 1950, Eleanor married Roland Russell Barnett in University Park, Iowa. From this union, four children were born.

Eleanor helped rear her children and managed the household through several moves. The family spent time in California and Tennessee before returning to Iowa. Roland was employed with Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The family lived in Oskaloosa, Grinnell and Aplington before settling in Mason City in July 1969. She enjoyed playing the piano and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

In August 1969, Eleanor began her professional career with A.C. Nielsen. She work-ed in the coding department until her retirement in 1987.

Eleanor joins her husband Roland; her parents; three brothers, Wilbur, Kenneth, and Robert; and one grandson in heaven.

She is survived by her three sons, Rick and his wife, Roxanne, (Pedelty) of Fresno, Calif.; Stephen and his wife Elizabeth (Anderson) of Kure Beach, N.C.; Andrew and his wife Joan (Van Bockern) of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter, Rhonda Barnett of Clear Lake; nine grandchildren, Rocky, Rachael, Ken, Jamie, Justin, Rusty, Kessa, Kyle, and Hannah; one great-granddaughter, Haleigh; one sister, Margaret; brothers, Roger and Warren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

LESTER BUCHHOLZ


RICEVILLE — Lester William Rudolph Buchholz age 91, of Riceville, passed away Thursday (March 18, 2004) at the Colonial Manor of Elma.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville with the Rev. Michael Parris officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in rural Riceville.

Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville today during the hours of 4 to 7 p.m. and onehour prior to services at the church.

Lester was born on February 4, 1913, in Elma to Paul and Louise (Ball) Buchholz. Lester attended local schools and on February 16, 1936, was united in marriage to Evelyn Julia Kruger at St Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville.

Lester was a retired farmer.

Survivors include two sons, Stanley Buchholz of Pryor, Okla., and Darrell Buchholz of Dixon, Iowa; two daughters, Lois DeVries of Junction City, Wis., and Esther Mae (Harold) Oberheu of Sumner, Iowa. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Rick DeVries, Debra (Mark) Malek, Jane (Dale) Petersen, Carol (Bill) O’Brien, Elaine (Randy) Ham-mitt, Adam (Kelly) Buchholz, and Michelle Buchholz;12 great grandchildren, and a sister-in-law, Louise (Alfred) Buchholz

Lester was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn, in 1994; two brothers, Alfred and Raymond; and one daughter-in-law, Jeanette Buchholz; a great grandson, Cadin DeVries (son of Rick and Karen DeVries); and one sister-in- law, Evelyn (Raymond) Buchholz.

MASON CITY— Phyllis A. Nelson, 70, of 927 12th St. N.E., died Thursday (March 18, 2004) at the Rockwell Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City, with the Rev. Jo Frahm-Watkins, of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Phyllis was born August 19, 1933, in Mason City, the daughter of Earl and Verda (Bell) Jacobs. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1951. Phyllis worked in the banking industry here in Mason City for many years, retiring in 1996. She was an avid golfer, enjoyed bowling and spending time with family and friends.

Phyllis is survived by two daughters, Tari L. Marson and Kent Balsley of Nora Springs, Melanie D. Nelson of Madison, Wis.; two grandchildren, Jessica Marson and Amanda Marson; mother, Verda Jacobs of Mason City; sister, Marlene Moore of Mason City; nephew, Michael Moore and wife, Janet, of Ankeny; niece, Christine Bradford and her husband, Chris, of Overland Park, Kan.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her father, Earl; former husband, Ronald Nelson and brother-in-law Miles Moore.

MASON CITY —Dorothy I. Naber, age 99, of Mason City died Sunday (March 21, 2004) at the I.O.O.F Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Champion–Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St., in Osage with Robert Orr of the Gospel Hall in Mason City officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at the Champion – Bucheit Funeral Home, in Osage and one hour before services Wednesday.

Dorothy was born on October 17, 1904, in Mitchell County to Walter and Isabella (Kvale) Pike. She attended rural area schools and graduated from Otranto High School in 1923. She went to Cedar Falls that summer and received her Normal Training Teaching Certificate. She taught for three years in rural Mitchell County schools.

Dorothy received the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior in 1934, and belonged to the Gospel Hall in Mason City for many years. She loved to cook, bake, and crochet. Anyone stopping by was always asked to stay for her home baked bread and cookies. The grandchildren and guests who stopped by were always given a crocheted doily before leaving.

Dorothy was united in marriage to George Naber on March 27, 1926. To this union were born eleven children, seven of whom survive. They farmed in Mitchell County. They later lived in Northwood, Kensett, and Mason City.

Dorothy is survived by five daughters, Alene (Thyrol) McCollough of Webster City, Donna (Pee Wee) Durbin of Osage, Mary Holm and special friend, Bob Jones. of Mason City, Lucille McCollough of Mason City, and Doris (Harry) Perschbacher of Albert Lea, Minn.; two sons, Boyd (Dorothy) Naber of Nancy, Ky., and Lowell (Nancy) Naber of Elgin, Ill.; 32 grandchildren; 62 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma DeLaney of Austin, Minn, and Alice Olson of Northwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George Naber in1990; sons, Gary in 1968, Lynn in 1970, Dale in 1987,and Allen in 2003; and also three grandchildren.

CLEAR LAKE — LaVern W. Miller, 79, 101 S. 21st St., Clear Lake, died Saturday (March 20, 2004) at the Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Interment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, with Military Honors provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

LaVern was born April 28, 1924, in Clear Lake, the son of Lloyd and Ina (Edwards) Miller. He graduated from Clear Lake High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

LaVern married Pearl Louise Wagner on April 28, 1945, in Wesley.

After serving in the Army, they moved back to the Clear Lake area where he farmed from 1950 to 1966. They then moved into town and LaVern worked for Stinehart Implement and Brakke Implement until his retirement in 1986.

LaVern enjoyed traveling, woodworking, collecting toy farm machinery and family reunions.

He was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church and the Clear Lake V.F.W.

LaVern is survived by his wife, Pearl Miller, of Clear Lake; four children, Linda Barlow and her husband Larry, of Clear Lake, Charlene Schabacker and husband Konnie, of Mason City, Nancy Ashland and her husband Al, of Clear Lake and LaVonne Pedelty and her husband Dale, of Mason City; eight grandchildren John Barlow, of Owatonna, Minn., Teresa Klein and her husband Ernie, of Clear Lake, Joe Barlow and his wife Becky, of Clear Lake, Sheila Groeneweg and her husband Kirk, of Clear Lake, Patti Jencks and her husband Mark, of Hawkeye, Matt Spencer, of Cedar Falls, Lucas Ashland and Will Ashland, of Clear Lake; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother Dwayne Miller and his wife, Ardith, of Charles City; and one sister, Dorothy Jean Heimendinger and her husband, Orville, of Osage.

CLEAR LAKE — Eldon L. Finer, 87, of 2518 N. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, went home to be with the Lord Sunday (March 21, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with Evangelist Robert Orr officiating. Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Eldon was born July 8, 1916, at Thompson, the son of Emil and Grace (Holland) Finer. Eldon graduated from Mason City High School in 1935. Following his graduation he worked in the office of Decker’s. Eldon served in the U.S. Army during World War II and after his discharge returned to Mason City and worked with his father at Finer Foods in Clear Lake. After the family business was sold, he returned to Decker’s and continued in sales. He later was a meat cutter in Ames and Mason City. He also worked in the insurance business prior to his retirement.

Eldon married Harriet Van Allen on Nov. 26, 1955, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Eldon loved spending time with his family, he loved music and was in the Mason City High School Band.

He loved the Lord, reading the Bible, hosting gospel meetings and hymn sings in their home.

Eldon enjoyed history and books about World War II, and activities on the lake.

Eldon was a member of Mason City Christian Assembly.

Eldon is survived by his wife, Harriet Finer, of Clear Lake; five children, Robin Peters and her husband Michael of North Liberty; Cheryl Finer-Toppin and her husband Jack of Garner; Jeffrey Finer and his wife Linda of Clear Lake; Jacquelyn Dillon and her husband Neil of Chandler, Ariz.; and Don Finer and his wife Leslie of Aliso Viejo, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Jordan, Aaron, Stephan, Nathan, and Hannah Peters, Nicole Toppin, Riley, Nickolas, Whitney Finer, and David Dillon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandchildren, Kimm Finer and Steven Dillon.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, attended country school and the Waldorf Academy.

On May 11, 1929, he married Agnes Larson at her parents’ home in Ellington Township. The couple lived and farmed eight miles south of Lake Mills.

He raised cattle and hogs, along with his farming operation, and retired in 1984.

He moved into a condo in Forest City in 1999.

In July 2002 he moved to Forest Plaza Assisted Living.

Failing health forced him to enter the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City on March 2, 2004.

Gust was very interested in co-ops and served for 38 years on the Winnebago REC Board, 14 years on the Dairyland Power Board and retired in 1987 as Director of the Winnebago RTA.

He also served on the Forest City School Board, the Forest City Bank and Trust Board of Directors, the Forest City Rotary Club and held many offices at Winnebago Lutheran Church where he was a member.

Gust and Agnes loved to travel and did extensively until her death in a car accident in 1975. Family gatherings were always an important part of his life.

Survivors include his daughter, Shirley Schutter and husband, Vernon; son Carroll Gustafson and wife, Karen; and daughter-in-law, Harriet Gustafson, wife of Gerald; seven grandchildren, Beth Eilers and husband, Dan, Bill Schutter and wife, Rita, Jeff Gustafson and wife, Cindy, Carl Gustafson and wife, Kim, Gregg Gustafson and wife, Susan, Kristen Rafferty and husband, Brian, and Eric Gustafson; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Also, two sisters, Charlotte Nelson and Ruth Olson of Forest City; a brother, Clemmit Gustafson and wife, Elaine, of Walcott; and two sisters-in-law, Orva Gustafson of Lake Mills and Marge Gustafson of Taylors Falls, Minn.

BELMOND — Fern Lorene Tomson, 85, of Belmond, passed away Friday (March 19, 2004) at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Funeral service for Fern L. Tomson will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery.

Fern, the daughter of Henry and Ida Anderson White, was born Nov. 2, 1918, near Carpenter, Iowa, in Worth County.

She attended school in Northwood, graduating from Northwood High School in 1936.

Following graduation, she attended the Hamilton School of Business in Mason City.


She moved to Belmond in 1938, and was employed as a secretary for Hogenson Construction Co.

On Dec. 14, 1941, Fern was united in marriage with Robert J. Tomson at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett. The couple made their home in Belmond and were blessed with two daughters.

Fern lived in Webster City and Kensett while Robert was in the Navy.

Following Robert’s discharge, the couple moved back to Belmond where they opened Tomson Grocery across from the Belmond School.

She was later employed for 10 years by Roy A. Henderson, Attorney, and then self-employed as an insurance agent and real estate broker at Tomson Insurance Agency.

Fern volunteered for various projects including Belmond Community School Board Member, Belmond Park Commission, Planning and Zoning Commission, Board of Belmond Community Care Car, officer and member of VFW Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, Congregate Meals and Belmond Senior Citizens.

Fern was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond. She was involved with Trinity ALCW, Pearl Circle of Trinity, Trinity Church Council and the Rebekah Lodge.

Fern is survived by two daughters, Lynnette Hruska and her husband, Jonathan, of Storm Lake, and Linda Geery of Knoxville; five grandchildren, Nathan Hruska and his wife, Julie, Jennifer Hruska, Kristin Hruska, Cara Geery, and Cami (Geery) Hollinrake and her husband, John; four great-grandsons, Dominick Clarke, Joseph Hollinrake, Cael Hollinrake, and Ethan Hruska; and a great-granddaughter, Sydney Hruska.

OSAGE — Robert “John” Mostek, 75, of Osage, died Monday (March 22, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City from Alzheimer’s Disease.

John was born June 15, 1928, in Mitchell, to Joseph and Anna (Krapa) Mostek. He attended schools in St. Ansgar and Mitchell, and served with the United States Army in the Korean War.

John was united in marriage to Dorothy Ileen Grimm on July 6, 1949, in Osage.

John had a great love for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John will be remembered for his great sense of humor.

He enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing, camping, singing, dancing, playing the harmonica, friends, and the outdoors.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Faith Lutheran Church in Mitchell, with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Mitchell, with military graveside service by Osage Legion Post 278.

Kevin J. Lehmann, of Jeffersonville, Ind., died on Wednesday (March 17, 2004) at the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Ky., of a brain aneurism.

He was born July 5, 1955, in Mason City, a son of Kenneth E. and Dorothy Lehmann.

He was raised in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School.

His interests were computers, family, visiting friends, and his four dogs, Sheba, Taylor, Bear and Petey, who will miss him a lot.

Kevin is survived by a sister and brothers, Carolyn J. Hubbard (Max) and family, Fredrick J. Lehmann (friend Ruth Davis) and family, Thomas E. Verla Mae Schwake, the daughter of Philip and Amanda (Nacke) Goodenbour, was born Feb. 9, 1932, in Tripoli, Iowa. She was baptized Feb. 16, 1932, the same day her mother passed away, at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli, and confirmed April 14, 1946, at Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. E. A. Hanff.

After her mother died, Verla lived with an aunt and uncle, Edward and Bertha Nacke, and was provided a wonderful home.

Verla received her education at Sumner #7 School.

Verla was united in marriage with Paul G. Schwake on March 6, 1949, at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli by Pastor Ewald Senst. Verla and Paul recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

After her marriage, Verla helped Paul farm for 34 years. She was also a child day care provider for 13 years. She enjoyed all of her little friends.

Verla’s death occurred Tuesday (March 23, 2004) at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, after a brief illness, at 72 years of age.

Verla was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church (Spring Fountain) and was active in the Ladies Aid.

She loved to cook and en-joyed playing cards and being with family and friends.

Verla is survived by her husband, Paul, of Sumner; one daughter, Linda Vold, of Mason City, and her special friend, Joe Hanig, of Dougherty; one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Cheryl Schwake, of Sumner; two grandsons, Brian Vold and his fiancee, Jami Campbell, and Mason Schwake; two granddaughters, Emily Vold and Jena Schwake; one great-grandson, Brayden Vold; and two sisters-in-law, Marlys Goodenbour and Leota Nacke, both of Tripoli.

Verla was preceded in death by her parents; her stepparents; one brother, Cletus Goodenbour; one sister, Shirley Kueker; and two-stepbrothers, Lavern and Victor Nacke.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Marcella married Raymond A. Donnelly on March 28, 1935, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Marcella and Ray lived on a farm near Dougherty until 1939, when they moved to Mason City.

Marcella was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, church circle, enjoyed playing cards and served as a school secretary at St. Joseph’s for a number of years.

Marcella is survived by her five daughters, Mary Moreland, of Iowa City, Ann Marie McGuire and husband, Dr. William, of Green Valley, Ariz., Ruth Feld and husband, Lyle, of Lenexa, Kan., Sister Martha Donnelly of LaCrosse, Wis., and Kathryn Rushing and husband, Dr. Dan, of Indianapolis, Ind.; three sons, Paul Donnelly and wife, Shirley, of Payson, Ariz., James Donnelly and wife, Teresa, of Phoenix, Ariz., John Donnelly of Mason City; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grand-children.

RICEVILLE — Glenn Dinger, 73, of Riceville, died Tuesday (March 23, 2004) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Glenn Lyle Dinger was born in Milaca, Minn., on Nov. 1, 1930, to Lyle and Hazel Brotten Aanerud Dinger. Glenn attended schools in Breckenridge, Minn., until the ninth grade and moved to Riceville with his family, graduating from Riceville High School in 1949.

He was united in marriage to Lois Klobassa on June 2, 1951, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville. To this union four children were born.

Glenn joined the U.S. Air Force on Jan. 6, 1951, serving in England until January 1955.

He worked as a rural mail carrier for 40 years with the U.S. Postal Service.

On June 29, 1989, Glenn was united in marriage to Elizabeth Berge at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth of Riceville; his four children, Beth Dinger, of LeRoy, Minn., Brenda and her husband, Kermit Singlestad, of Lake Mills, Paul and his wife, Susan Dinger, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Susan and her husband, Steven Swancutt, of Manly; his first wife, Lois Klobassa, of Rice-ville; three step-children, Theone and her husband, Steven Quattlebaum, of Spencer, Jason and his wife, Jody Vulk, of Des Moines, and Ryan Vulk and Dana Freidrich, of San Francisco, Calif.; six grandchildren; two half brothers, Larry and his wife, Paul Dinger, of Pohnpei, Micronesia, and John and his wife, Michie Dinger, of Washington D.C.; and a half sister, Jan and her husband, the Rev.
