CLAIRE FRENCH

OSAGE — Claire French, 85, of Osage, died Sunday (March 14, 2004) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage of myeloproliferative disease.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Claire donated his body to the University of Iowa Medical College. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Charles Claire French was born Sept. 8, 1918, in Osage. He was the oldest child of Mary Gilles and Glenn French. His father was a salesman for the Northwest Grocery Company so the family moved quite often, but they always seemed to return to Osage.

Claire started school in Osage, and at that time, it was common to skip half grades. He graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1935 when he was 16.

He spent his summers working on his grandfather’s farm and enjoying the company of his grandfather, Charles B. French.

After his graduation from high school, he worked at a printing company and was hoping to save money for college. But the print shop went out of business so he returned to Osage to live with Gramp French and work at the Diamond Grocery.

Claire loved the grocery business and soon became the fruit and vegetable man.

Claire and Helen Stearns were married Aug. 30, 1941, in Sturgis, S.D. He had joined the Army in March of 1940 and was eventually sent to Fort Mead in South Dakota.

He did administrative work and was asked to go to officer training school at Fort Lee in Virginia. Helen and Claire moved to Denver, Colo., where their first daughter, Nancy, was born on Dec. 28, 1943.

After being discharged from the Army in 1945, they returned to Osage and he was offered a position at Home Trust Bank, working there until he and his sister-in-law, Mazie Stearns, bought a women’s and children’s clothing store from Mary Kelly in February of 1947. Their second daughter, Sally, was born July 6, 1948.

He operated the store until it was sold to Jeannine Horn in January of 1972.

Claire also enjoyed working on his grandfather’s farm which he now owned. Because of his great love of the farm, he purchased land in the mid-1960s and the family farm in the early ’70s and spent all his spare time there farming and eventually gardening.

During his lifetime, Claire was a life master bridge player, a league bowler, and golf club champion runner-up. He ran for state representative, served on the County Board of Review, and the city council.

He was adjutant of American Legion Post 278, and secretary-treasurer of the Osage Development Corporation as well as Sunny Brae Country Club and Rotary.

While in Florida for the winter, he was a volunteer tax preparer for senior citizens. He enjoyed pheasant hunting and semi-annual fishing trips to Canada with Bob Isham, Virg Johnston, Walt McCoy, and Karl Jorde.

Claire is survived by his wife, Helen, and daughters Nan (Jerry) Danforth of Cedar Rapids, and Sally (Bob) Miller of Osage. Grandchildren include Jeff and Chad Danforth, Robyn (Dave) Keele, Joe (Brenda) Miller and Jaci (fiancé Dan Donlan) Miller. Great-grandchildren include Matt and Mark Keele, and Abbie, Anna, and Ben Miller. Also surviving are a sister, Joan (Ken) Limke of Urbandale; and a sister-in-law, Mary Helen French, of Osage.

His parents and two brothers, Bob and Jim, preceded him in death.

Memorials may be directed to Mitchell County ARC.

BRADLEY DEAN JULSEN

MASON CITY — Bradley Dean Julsen, 46, of 1403 Willow St., died following his courageous battle with cancer at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit on Wednesday evening (March 17, 2004).

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N., Clear Lake. Officiating will be the Rev. Janice R. Burnett.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Family of Funeral Homes, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Elwood- St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Bradley D. Julsen Memorial Fund.

Bradley was born the second of four children to Carroll Julsen and Joyce (DeWitt) Julsen in Mason City on Sept. 22, 1957. He graduated from North Central High School in Manly, and then attended Agriculture Power Mechanics School at NIACC, graduating in 1977. He furthered his education by again attending NIACC, receiving his A.A. degree in 1980, and then transferring to Iowa State University and receiving his degree in industrial education in 1982.

He worked as a substitute teacher for a few years in Mason City and Manly. During that time he managed the Rail Club in Manly.

Brad was united in marriage to Barb Hebel on March 4, 1991, in Las Vegas. To this union was born three daughters.

Brad joined the staff of FedEx as a courier in 1987, and later became engaged as the manager, for the last six years, of the 16 that he worked for them. He proved himself as an organized person who drove himself to perfection in his work and home life.

He enjoyed fishing in Canada, hunting pheasants, ducks, deer, and wild turkey, and as a golfer he strived to do his best, even scoring a hole-in-one at the Manly golf course.

When he could, he liked to play poker with his buddies, but often his love for his wife, three daughters and home projects came first. He was a wonderful father and husband and spent a great deal of time with his three daughters, honing their athletic skills in softball, soccer and most recently basketball.

His strong will and incredible determination were evident over the past few months in completing projects around the home, while facing the reality of his pending death.

Brad talked to everyone and anyone and his ability to teach and give to others was evident by just being himself around others. Brad had a strong faith, yet remained very private in his beliefs.

At work he received numer-ous awards that were a testament to his personality and staying on task. These included the highest award that FedEx bestows, the “Golden Falcon Award” for giving service above and beyond, which he received in September 2002. He was awarded the manager of the month several times. His regional manager had nominated Brad for the “Purple Pride Award,” which is only one of 50 humanitarian awards given in the United States semi-annually. This award will be given out in April. At the same time, Brad had nominated Sue, from the local office, for the same award, which she will receive. Rarely are two of these awards given out at the same office at the same time.

Brad was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever.

Those thankful in sharing Brad’s life include his wife of 13 years, Barb, Clear Lake; their three daughters, Sam-antha age 11, Taylor age 9, and Alexa, age 6, all at home; his sister, Darcy Julsen-Miller and her husband, Vern, Mason City; two brothers, Mike and his wife, Vickie Julsen, Hia-watha, and Craig Julsen, Des Moines; his mother-in-law, Ila Hebel, Manly; and many other in-laws and several nieces and nephews.

During the time of World War II, she met her eventual husband and partner in life, Arthur Reed Trager. The couple was united in marriage at the First Methodist Church in Peekskill, on Jan. 6, 1946. Following their marriage, the couple made their home on the Trager family farm near Belmond. Two years later, they returned to the Eastern U.S. and resided there for 10 years. In March of 1958, Mary Agnes and Art moved back to the farm in Iowa, where they made their home and raised their children. After retirement, they continued to live on the farm until moving into Belmond in July 1991.

Throughout her entire life, Mary was devoted to her family. As a couple, she and Art would enjoy traveling to visit their daughters in the various places they had lived. Much of Mary’s time was also spent in raising her niece and nep-hews, to whom she was like a mother figure. Time shared with her grandsons, Austin and Reed Lette, was especially precious to her.

As the years went by, she remained active and involved in her church homes and was a long time member of “The Chat Club.” A favorite pastime of Mary’s was visiting and being around others. She loved gardening and raising flowers. Music also brought her great joy and relaxation. She was a meticulous and tireless housekeeper.

Mary Agnes was a faithful member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church for the past 40 years. Even as her health continued to decline, in later years go-ing to church and spending time with family was very important to her.
