NORBERT N. SCHUVER


NORA SPRINGS — Norbert N. Schuver, of 8 S. Summit Ave.,Nora Springs, died Tuesday (March 9, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Name Catholic Church, 507 First Ave. N.W. in Rockford, with Father Craig E. Steimel officiating. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs, with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Post H.D.S. #449 of Nora Springs.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, in Nora Springs.

Norbert Nicholas, the son of Nicolous A. and Rose M. (Jungers) Schuver, was born May 31, 1923 in Granville, Iowa. At a young age he moved with his family to Nora Springs.

He received his education at and graduated from Nora Springs High School. He then attended classes at Mason City Junior College.

He was drafted into the United States Army, where he was stationed at Adak in the Aleutian Islands. During his tour he was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was honorably discharged in November 1945, returned to Nora Springs, and attended Hamilton’s Business College.

He married Geraldine C. Swanson on Dec. 1, 1945. He was then employed at Schuver Implement, where he was as an implement mechanic for 33 years.

He then handled the maintenance responsibilities for The Manor in Nora Springs until June 1989.

Norbert was very well respected for his ability to be creative and resourceful. He was a man who enjoyed working with his hands and tools, making some of his own tools when needed.

Even though spending time with his family was his greatest joy, he also enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool, mushroom hunting and golfing with his family and friends.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City, a former member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford, and a member of the American Legion Post H.D.S. #449 of Nora Springs.

Norbert is survived by his wife, Geraldine, of Nora Springs; two sons and six grandchildren, Mark and Linda Schuver of Lafayette, Ind., and their children, Melissa Schmidgall, of Columbus, Ohio, Jennifer Schuver, of Lakewood, Colo. and Sarah Schmidgall, of Indianapolis, Ind.; Brad and Peggy Schuver of Marion, Iowa, and their children, Katie Schuver of Spokane, Wash., Nick Schuver, of Iowa City and Kevin Schuver at home. He is also survived by one sister, Evelyn Vala, of Rockford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Harold Schuver.

The family requests memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa.

LEON ‘TINY’ LINCICUM


CLEAR LAKE — Leon “Tiny” Lincicum, 69, died Friday (Feb. 27, 2004) at his residence in Union, Ore.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at the United Methodist Church in Union, Ore., with Pastor Jerry Peters officiating.

Daniels Chapel of the Valley in LaGrande, Ore., was in charge of arrangements.

Leon “Tiny” Lincicum was born on Aug. 22, 1934, the son of Edmund and Ruth (Ott) Lincicum in Clear Lake. He attended schools in Clear Lake, graduating with the Class of 1952.

On April 18, 1954, he married Ellen (Wharam) in Clear Lake. He served in the United States Air Force and attended Iowa State University, where he majored in industrial arts.

In 1964, he left Clear Lake and his travels took him to Chicago and Florida, where he worked for Delta Airlines before moving out west to work for GTE. He later settled in Union.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church. He also belonged to the Grand Ronde Valley Masonic Lodge, Royal Arch Masons, VFW, Elks, and Eagles Lodges.

Tiny was active with the Union Senior meals program as well as playing Santa Claus for the ladies club for many years.

He was also the owner of Tiny’s Sport and Tackle Shop and enjoyed fishing, hunting, skiing, snowmobiling, and the outdoors, as well as being an inventor.

Survivors include his son, Kevin Lincicum, of Buffalo, Minn.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clayton and Judy Lincicum, of Clear Lake, and Kenneth Edmund and Blanche Lincicum, of Clear Lake; 19 nieces and nephews; and other relatives and special friends.

CORWITH — John Maxwell “Max” Sloan, 91, of Corwith, died Tuesday (March 9, 2004) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Corwith.

NORTHWOOD — Funeral services for Doris L. Broitzman, of Northwood, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with Pastor Paul Homer officiating. Interment will be in the Wanders Rest Cemetery rural Gordonsville, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea, Minn., and one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the church.

Doris L. Broitzman was born on Aug. 28, 1925, in Erie, Pa., the daughter of Chris and Johanna (Bach) Bonnerup. As a child her family moved to rural Glenville, Minn.

She was confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. She attended school in Glenville and Albert Lea High School.

She was employed for a time at the Wilson Co. in Albert Lea.

On Sept. 14, 1947, she was united in marriage to Harold Broitzman at the Salem Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. After their marriage they farmed east of Gordonsville, where they raised their family.

She was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church near Myrtle, was a Sunday school teacher and active in the ladies aid. She then became a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Doris enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, dancing and in her later years traveling to Texas for the winter. Attending her grandchildren’s activities was a joy to her.

Doris and Harold moved to Northwood in June 2000 and entered Lutheran Retirement Home, where she died on Tuesday, March 9.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Harold Broitzman of Northwood; children, Gary (Paula)Broitzman of Hayward, Minn., Barbara Schutz and special friend, Harlan Helgeson, of Northwood, Karen Frondal of Phoenix, Ariz., Thomas Broitzman of Glenville, Suzanne (Mark) Senne of Northwood, and David Broitzman of Albert Lea; grandchildren, Todd (Jody) Broitzman of Hayward, Minn., Dean (Lonna) Broitzman of Clarks Grove, Minn., Daniel Schutz of Northwood, Jolene Schutz and special friend, Cody Hickle, of Northwood, Vicki Solland and special friend, Dave Shaw, and Amber Frondal, all of Phoenix, Stephanie Broitzman of Glenville, Jessica and Matthew Lowe of Northwood, Brianna and Ryan Broitzman of Albert Lea; and seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruby Baumgartner of Aurora, Colo., Florence Brzezenski of Albert Lea, and Lois (Kenneth) Gayken of Glenville; sisters-in-law, Velma Bonnerup and Maxine Bonnerup of Albert Lea, Mable Perleberg of Glenville, Nadine Broitzman of Northwood, Helen Broitzman of Austin, Minn.; many nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.

JOHN MAXWELL ‘MAX’ SLOAN


CORWITH — John Maxwell “Max” Sloan died Tuesday (March 9, 2004) at Westview Care Center in Britt at the age of 91. He had been a resident there since September 2001.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 139 Third St. S.E. in Britt, with the Rev. Jerry Blake officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Corwith.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, 207 Linn St. in Corwith, with a parish scripture prayer service beginning at 4:30 pm.

John Maxwell “Max” Sloan was born March 8, 1913, in Corwith, son of John and Dorothy (Hanlon) Sloan. Max grew up and attended school in Corwith.

He married Madeline Adeline Schaller on Jan. 2, 1935, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Corwith, and then farmed southeast of Corwith until retiring in 1978.

Max then wintered in California, where he enjoyed helping farmers. He loved farming, fishing, traveling and spending time with his family at their cabin in northern Minnesota.

He is survived by six children, Richard Sloan and his wife, Mary Ann, of Simi, Calif., Dorothy Carlson and her husband, Paul, of Algona, Robert Sloan and his wife, Deanna, of Corwith, James Sloan and his wife, Margaret, of Algona, Deanna Slack and her husband, Jamie, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Kimberly Hanna and her husband, Tim, of Lake Mills; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Maxson, of Delano, Calif., and Helen Sloan, of Corwith; two sisters-in-law, Alice Kelch, of Corwith, and Helen DeSart, of Lake City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Madeline, on April 20, 1978; a son, John Joseph, in infancy; two grandsons, and twin great-grandsons.

ELKHORN, Neb. — Funeral services for William Thomas Daly, 9-month-old son of Thomas and Sarah Daly of Elkhorn, Neb., will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Emmaus Lutheran Church in Kennard, Neb. Burial will be held at the Kennard Cemetery, in Kennard, Neb.

MASON CITY — Irma K. Hungerford, 91, a resident of the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City, and formerly of Rockford, died Tuesday (March 9, 2004) at the Good Shepherd Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City. Pastor Kenneth Kent of Rockford United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home, and for one hour prior to the service.

Irma Kathryn Rolfes was born Dec. 12, 1912, in Ulster Township, the daughter of Edward J. and Laura A. (Bartz) Rolfes. She attended country school and Rockford High School before moving to Charles City and graduating from Charles City High School in 1930.

Following high school, Irma taught country school and graduated from the Iowa Teachers College in 1934. Irma went to teach in the Mitchell School System for three years, where she met and later married Laurence D. Hungerford on Aug. 14, 1938, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

She then taught for 17 years at the Rockford Elementary School and for another 10 years as a substitute teacher.

Irma was a member of the Chapter ED P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was also a 79-year member of the Rockford United Methodist Church.

Irma enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, knitting, bird watching, keeping the squirrels away from her bird feeders and fishing with her grandson, Keith.

Irma is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughter, Barbara Jean (James) Ristau, of Hampton; her grandchildren, Keith C. (Silvana) Ristau of Mesquite, Texas, and Marc C. (Stephanie) Ristau of Ankeny; step-daughters, Ruth (Richard) Geary of Mason City and Bertha A. Skuster of Osage; great-grandson, Dylan Zachary Ristau of Mesquite, Texas; stepgrandchildren, Nancy (Rick) Miller of Annandale, N.J., David (Kate) Hungerford of Buda, Texas, Sally (John) Rode of Overland Park, Kan., Michael Geary of Iowa City, Daniel (Arlene) Geary of Colorado, Myra (Jim) Dixon of Oakland, Calif., and Marc (Jane) Skuster of Victorville, Calif.; step-great-grandchildren, Olivia Rode and Michael Rode of Overland Park, Kan., Callie Hungerford of Buda, Texas, Kelly Geary and Graham Geary of Colorado, Sarah Skuster of Victorville, Calif., and Alex Miller of Tempe, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Peggy Hungerford; and cousin, Vernon (Donna) Drager of Rockford.

Charlotte E. Lamping passed away peacefully at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, on Tuesday (March 9, 2004) at the age of 86 years, three months and three days.

She was the daughter of Engvald and Hannah (Helland) Jacobson, born on Dec. 6, 1917, at Northwood.

She married William F. Lamping on May 31, 1938, in Thompson.

She taught country school in Winnebago County before marriage. She was a cook at Witke’s Restaurant in Clear Lake for 11 years, and at St. Joseph Hospital in Belvidere, Ill., for 10 years.

She enjoyed traveling and making quilts; she also enjoyed flower gardening.

Charlotte is survived by her children, Darrell and his wife, Cindy, of Pahrump, Nev.; Keith and his wife Joni of Byron, Ill.; Joy Palmieri of Arcadia, Calif.; Karen Freer of Henderson, Nev.; daughter-in-law, Judy Lamping of Cherry Valley, Ill., and Les and his wife, Kathy, of Riverside, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Mavis Moklestad of Des Moines; and her brother, Clair Nelsrud of Grand Forks, N.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill, in 1995; a son, Gary, and by a sister.

HANLONTOWN — James H. “Jim” Furness, 85, of 208 E. Third in Hanlontown, died Wednesday (March 10, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, 302 E. Fourth St. in Hanlontown, with the Rev. Kris Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Brush Point Cemetery in rural Hanlontown. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St. in Manly.

James Herbert Furness, the son of Sivert and Ida (Eide) Furness, was born May 19, 1918, on a farm north of Hanlontown.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Grace Lutheran Church at Hanlontown. He graduated from Hanlontown High School in 1938.

He was united in marriage to Neva Orr, his high school sweetheart, on Dec. 20, 1939, at her home southeast of Hanlontown.

After their marriage, James farmed and drove truck near Lake Mills. The couple moved back to Hanlontown in 1951, where he then worked for International Harvester. In 1952, the couple bought the Hanlontown cafe, which was then known as the Furness Cafe, and ran it for 23 years. James also did construction around the northern Iowa area.

James was a volunteer on the Hanlontown Fire Department from 1952 until 1976. He was also the mayor from 1959 until 1976 and he was the first water superintendent for the city, from 1985 until 1991.

One of his greatest hobbies was working with his show birds for 50 years. He was inducted into the “National Modena Club Hall of Fame” in 1998.

Surviving James is his wife, Neva, of Hanlontown; two daughters Carrol “Jean” Michaelis and her husband, Robert, of Hanlontown, and Cynthia “Cindy” Hohenfield of Nora Springs and her special friend, Jeffery Koch, of Hampton; one son, Steven, and his wife, Hannelore, of Hanlontown; daughter-in-law, Ruth Furness of Lake Mills; eight grandchildren, Jody (Glenn) Thada, Cathy (Randy) Jensen, Todd (Cheryl) Michaelis, Chad (Nancy) Michaelis, Christopher Hohenfield, Laura Hohenfield, Sylvan Furness and Kevin Furness; six great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Gladys Bartlett of Denton, Texas, and one brother, Edwin Furness and his wife, Ardith, of Garner.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Gerald Allen Furness.

RIDGEWAY — Julia Ollendieck, 63, of Ridgeway, died Tuesday (March 9, 2004) at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.

Myrtle was born March 24, 1907, a daughter of Ferdinand and Hannah (Trettin) Glassel, in a German rural area near Grafton.

She was a graduate of Kensett High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.

A registered nurse, Myrtle worked at hospitals in Arizona and Wisconsin until retiring after serving several years at Mercy Hospital, Mason City.

In 1976, Myrtle married Marvin Rusley and they made their home in Manly. They moved to Mason City in 1994.

She enjoyed her garden and flowers. She loved her family and friends and had a long loving and caring interest in all their lives.

Myrtle is survived by her husband, Marvin Rusley, of Mason City; a sister, Lillie Wren, of Peoria, Ariz.; nephews, Richard, Robert, and Allan Upchurch; a niece, Elinor (Upchurch) Willcockson; a great-nephew, Mark Fjone and his wife, Susan; a great-niece, Kim Fjone; great-great-nieces, Megan and Sara Jo Fjone; great-great-nephew, Tyrone Fjone; a great-great-great niece, Taya La Shell Fjone; a step-daughter, Marjean Jensen and her husband, Mike; a step-son, Philip Rusley and his wife, Cheryl; step-grandchildren, Michele and James Longhini, Mark and Karen Jensen, Mike and Lee Jensen, Eric and Jennifer Rusley, Jason and Melissa Rusley, Janean and Fran Dicari; step-great-grandchildren, Amanda Smith, Matthew Longhini, Ryan Jensen, Christopher Jensen, Nicholas Jensen, Casey Jensen, Helen Jensen, Korbyn Dicari, Dominic Dicari, Siena Dicari, Dylan Rusley, Lindsay Rusley, Kori Paige Rusley, and a step-great-great-grandson, James Roscoe Smith.

NASHUA— Paul Emil Janssen, 94, of Nashua, died Thursday (March 11, 2004) at the New Hampton Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services for Mr. Janssen will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Nashua United Methodist Church in Nashua with the Rev. Marion Sindt officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memorial Gardens, Charles City.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Sunnyside Funeral Home, Charles City, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church.

A memorial has been est-ablished in Paul’s name. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Paul was born Jan. 29, 1910, near Westgate, Iowa. He was the son of Willie and Emilie (Kraatz) Janssen. Paul had five brothers and two sisters. At the age of four and after his mother’s death, Paul was taken to live with an aunt and uncle in Remington, Ind., where he lived until the age of seven. Then Paul returned to Rockford to live with his father where he helped him and other farmers in the area. Paul was educated in a country school near his home.

On Jan. 27, 1932, Paul was united in marriage to Ferne Johnson of Rockford. And to this union five children were born.

Paul and Ferne started farming in March of 1936, near Nashua, and continued farming until he retired in 1972 to an acreage near Nashua. Paul worked for Meinerz Creamery in Fred-ericksburg for three years.

Paul is survived by his wife, Ferne; four children, Jean Janssen of Fort Madison, Alvin (Pat) Janssen of Dover, Ark., Janice Kraus of Mason City, and Arlen (Mary) Janssen of Nashua; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; a granddaughter; five brothers; and two sisters.

Louis A. Litterer was born February 10, 1916, in Pleasant Grove Township, Floyd County, a son of Fred and Mary (Scheidecker) Litterer, and died Friday, March 12, 2004, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene with his loving family at his bedside.

He received his education in the rural Pleasant Grove Township School and as a young man started farming southeast of Greene. On October 3, 1938, he was united in marriage to Mabel A. Johnson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union were born seven children.

Louie and Mabel farmed southeast of Greene for 54 years before moving into Greene in 1992. They moved into the Liebe Care Center in December 1999.

Louie was proud to be a farmer and worked hard at building up his farming operation and providing for his family. His farming interests included dairy farming, raising Hampshire hogs and sheep. He was a dealer for Crows Seed Co. for many years. He enjoyed working with horses on the farm and as a pastime.

He was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greene, where he served as a trustee and elder of the church. He was a member of the Greene Retirement Housing Board, vice president of the Butler County Association for Retarded Citizens, volunteer for the Hawkeye Valley Meals on Wheels. Louie was always willing to help out in the neighborhood wherever there was a need.

Living family members include his loving wife, Mabel of Greene; four daughters, Wilma (Wayne) Schmitt of Forest Lake, Minn., Loretta (Loren) Johnson of Springfield, Ill., Carol Herrmann of Oregon,Wis,, Phyllis Litterer of Clear Lake; three sons, Charles (Maggie) Litterer of Mansfield, Texas, Donald (Judy) Litterer of Shell Rock, and Merlin (Linda) Litterer of Greene; 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna (Francis) Brink-man of Greene; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Eva Horn; one brother, Leonard Litterer; and one great-granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Litterer.

Kimberly Ann McLaughlin was born April 19, 1971, at Luke Air Force Base, Glendale, Ariz., a daughter of Thomas and Mary Jo (Kiefer) Keenan. Moving to Iowa in 1979, Kim attended school at Oelwein, and was a 1989 graduate of Oelwein High School. She attended North Iowa Area Community College and later graduated from La James College, Mason City.

Kim was an instructor at La James College for two years. She joined Younker’s Hair Salon, Mason City and later became a counter manager for Estee Lauder in Younker’s cosmetic department. While at home, she enjoyed being a Mary Kay representative.

In 1998, Kim developed primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) and was awaiting a double lung transplant. Over the years, she did much to raise organ donor awareness and upon her death, be-came a tissue donor. Kim and Todd placed many vending machines in the Mason City area, giving a portion of the proceeds to the Iowa Donor Network.

Kim devoted herself to spending time with her daughter, Taylor, and husband, Todd. Her friends were im-portant to her and gave her much support, keeping her spirits up, with coffee get-togethers at favorite spots and games of Bunko.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City.

Kim is survived by her husband, Todd, and a daughter, Taylor, Mason City; her parents, Thomas and Mary Jo Keenan, Clear Lake; in-laws, Larry and Jean McLaughlin, Mason City; two brothers, Michael Keenan and his wife, Sharon, Grimes and Christopher Keenan and his wife Teri, Tiffin; maternal grandfather, Robert Kiefer, Clear Lake; a niece, Alison Keenan; a nephew, Sean Keenan; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Gaye Lynn Gordon-Rendon, 42, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Kensett, died Monday (March 8, 2004) in Tucson. Her untimely death is a tremendous loss to her loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett, with the Reverend Allan Stoa officiating.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of service at the church on Wednesday. Following the services, her body will be cremated.

Gaye Lynn Gordon-Rendon was born on July 16, 1961, in Mason City, the daughter of Gail and Sharon (Link) Gordon. She was baptized at Bethany Lutheran Church and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation also at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett. She attended and received her education in the Northwood-Kensett Community schools, graduating from Northwood-Kensett High School in 1979. Gaye also graduated from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree from the University of Nebraska, and obtained her master’s degree in dietary science from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Gaye was employed by the Canteen Correctional Services as a Dietitian MSRD.

She was an avid runner, hiker, and loved animals.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, John M. A registered nurse, Myrtle worked at hospitals in Arizona and Wisconsin until retiring after serving several years at Mercy Hospital, Mason City.

In 1976, Myrtle married Marvin Rusley and they made their home in Manly. They moved to Mason City in 1994.

She enjoyed her garden and flowers. She loved her family and friends and had a long, loving and caring in-terest in all their lives.

ALBERT LEA, Minn. — Catherine F. Hofbauer, age 49, of Albert Lea, formerly of Buffalo Center, Iowa, passed away on Thursday (March 11, 2004) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Cathy had been diagnosed and treated for lung cancer even though she never smoked. The cancer proved to be an ob-stacle she could not overcome.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center, with the Rev. Lois Abel officiating. Inurnment will take place at Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

Catherine Fay Hofbauer was born on January 6, 1955, at Buffalo Center, the daughter of Harold and Burdine (Hanson) Hofbauer. She was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center. Cathy attended and graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1973.

Following her graduation, she attended North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City, where she completed the medical office as-sistant program.

Cathy lived in Albert Lea, Minn., where she worked as a medical coder for the Albert Lea Medical Center. She truly loved her work and was bless-ed to have made such wonder-ful friendships during her career. For enjoyment, Cathy appreciated nature by taking walks around Fountain Lake, bird watching, growing flowers, fishing, and traveling. She also participated in sports such as softball, bowling, and golfing. Cathy was proud to have been a marshal at the Senior PGA in Minne-apolis from 2000 until 2002. In addition, Catherine donated her time and her skills to Habitat for Humanity in Albert Lea.

Survivors include her parents, Harold and Burdine Hofbauer of Buffalo Center; grandfather, Henry Hofbauer of Buffalo Center; her friend and very important part in her life, Michael Ehlert of Owatonna, Minn.; sisters, and brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Cleo Sefton was born on September 11, 1906, at Xenia, Ill., the daughter of Harry and Ethel (Jones) Sefton. She moved with her family at age eight to Webster City.

Cleo was united in marriage to Harold Nicholson in Webster City in the mid 1930s. She was a life-long homemaker. She had worked for a number of years as a cook for the Belmond Comunity Schools.

Cleo was a long-time member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Belmond. The church was a very important part of her life. She looked forward to Sunday morning services and then traveling to visit her sisters Irene and Thelma.

Family was a very important part of her life, whether it was time spent visiting with them, crocheting afghans for them, making them clothing, or playing cards with her grandson, Tracy. Cleo very much loved cats and dogs.

Cleo lived for 13 years at the Belmond Retirement Center and had lived at the care center since February of 1998.

She is survived by her sister, Thelma Sefton, Dows; daughter-in-law, Shirley Nicholson, Belmond; and four step-grandchildren, Kimberly Miller, Iowa City, Brett and wife, Sonja, Lobdell, Belmond, Blake and wife, Jane, Lobdell, Clear Lake, and Tracy Lobdell and his fiancee, Stacey, Marshalltown.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; son, Eugene “Nick” Nicholson; an infant son; step-grandson, Kurt Lobdell; and sister, Irene Sefton.

WODEN— Edward Stohr, 91, of Woden, died Sunday (March 13, 2004) at the Titonka Care Center in Titonka.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Titonka, with the Rev. John Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

NASHUA — Paul Emil Janssen, 94, of Nashua, died Thursday (March 11, 2004) at the New Hampton Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services for Mr. Janssen will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Nashua United Methodist Church in Nashua with the Rev. Marion Sindt officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memorial Gardens, Charles City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Sunnyside Funeral Home, Charles City, where the family will receive friends, and on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church.

A memorial has been established in Paul’s name. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Paul was born Jan. 29, 1910, near Westgate, Iowa. He was the son of Willie and Emilie (Kraatz) Janssen. Paul had five brothers and two sisters. At the age of four and after his mother’s death, Paul was taken to live with an aunt and uncle in Remington, Ind., where he lived until the age of seven, then Paul returned to Rockford to live with his father where he helped him and other farmers in the area. Paul was educated in a country school near his home.


On Jan. 27, 1932, Paul was united in marriage to Ferne Johnson of Rockford. And to this union five children were born.

Paul and Ferne started farming in March of 1936, near Nashua, and continued farming until he retired in 1972 to an acreage near Nashua. Paul worked for Meinerz Creamery in Fredericksburg for three years.

Paul is survived by his wife, Ferne; four children, Jean Janssen of Fort Madison, Alvin (Pat) Janssen of Dover, Ark., Janice Kraus of Mason City, and Arlen (Mary) Janssen of Nashua; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; a granddaughter; five brothers; and two sisters.

MASON CITY— Clifford E. Oswald, 79, of 190 South Grover Avenue, died Saturday (March 13, 2004) at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 South Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City, with the Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.

Clifford E. Oswald was born February 18, 1925, the son of James and Mittie (Sinkhorn) Oswald in Freeport, Ill. Clifford served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He later received an honorable discharge from the Army.

He was united in marriage to Dolores Daws on July 26, 1947, in Freeport, Ill.

Clifford was an avid motorcycle enthusiast. He had been the owner and operator of the Family Cycle Center in Oshkosh, Wis., for twenty years.

Clifford will be sadly missed by his wife Dolores and their family.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dolores Oswald, of Mason City; three daughters, Ellen Nowicki and husband, Joe, of Oshkosh, Wis., Karen Mohr and special friend, Rod, also of Oshkosh, Cindy Leichtnam and husband, Bob, of Mason City; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one step grandson; two step great-grandchildren; sister, Virginia Adams of Freeport, Ill.; and brother, Jim Oswald also of Freeport.
