MARK ALLEN STALEY


MESERVEY — Mark Allen Staley passed away on Friday (July 23, 2004) at the age of 43 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a short battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Salem United Methodist Church, Meservey, with Pastor Rose Calderon-Khan officiating. Words of remembrance will be shared by Mr. Red Haugland. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, 107 N. Second St., Thornton.

Mark was born Jan. 19, 1961, to John William and Jean LaRae (Retallick) Staley, in Madison, Wis.

Mark was educated in the Oregon, Wisconsin, School District and graduated in 1979 at Freedom House High in Madison, Wis. Mark moved to Clear Lake in 1985 and worked for Plastic Molders, County Market and Target. He moved to Thornton in 1987 and worked for area construction companies Hennings, GSI, Lerdal Construction and Roger’s Roofing. Mark worked for KR Construction in Belmond since 2002 until he was unable to work in April of this year.

Mark was a volunteer for Klemme Boy Scout Troop 456 and he enjoyed bow hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, attending his children’s activities, Harley-Davidsons, the Packers, and being with family and friends. Mark attended the Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey.

Mark is survived by his wife, Kay; daughters, Toni Staley, Barneveld, Wis., Stacy Nachazel; and son, Tyler Staley, both at home; grandson, Braden Hosler, Barneveld, Wis.; mother, Jean (Mike) Diggan, Madison, Wis.; grandmother, Ruth Vultaggio, Columbus, Wis.; brothers, John (Karen) Staley, Garner, James Staley, Stoughton, Wis.; sisters, Cheryll (Dennis) McCormick , Madison, Wis. and Michelle Staley, Madison, Wis.; nieces, Alicia, Shauna, Laiken, Stacey, Erin, Karin and Ashley; nephews, Andy, Kyle, Collin, Devon, Brett, Brian, Brent and Brandon; great nieces, MacKenzie and Alexis, great nephew, Jacob; grandmother-in-law, Evelyn Carroll, Mason City; parents-in-law, Lynn and Alice Scharlau, Mason City; brother-in-law, John (Tina) Scharlau, Mason City; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

LELAND— Arnold T. “Runt” Ambroson, 91, of Leland died Sunday (July 25, 2004) at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Leland with the Rev. Jacqueline Swanson officiating. Burial will be at Forest Home Cemetery, Leland.

MASON CITY — Doris E. Magnuson, 67, of Albert Lea, Minn., died Saturday (July 24, 2004) at the Good Samaratin Home in Albert Lea.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City with the Rev. Kent Otterman officiating. Interment will be in Brush Point Cemetery, rural Hanlontown.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday and then one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Family suggests memorials to Doris E. Magnuson memorial fund.

Doris was born Nov. 13, 1936, in Northwood, the daughter of Mearl and Dorothea Mae (Noe) Dixon. She graduated from high school in Manly in 1955.

Doris married Donald Magnuson on June 11, 1956, and they lived in Mason City.

She was a great mom, grandmother, mother-in-law, babysitter, and was well known for her cooking.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Doris is survived by her children, Allen Magnuson and his wife, Nora, and a close friend, Patty Pylant, Lawton, Okla., Darla Olson and her husband, Ole, Albert Lea, Ron Magnuson and his special friend, Shirley Bjorklund, Dows, Rhonda Magnuson and her lover, Paul Bertogli, Framingham, Mass.; her grandchildren, Misty Schroeder, Crystal Blanchard, Dwight Blanchard, Emily Kelley, Jessica Servantez, Jennifer Servantez, Jamie Servantez, and Katie Magnuson; seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Joan Forde, Katy, Texas; special friend, Tami Billings and family, Nora Springs; Patty’s children, Stefunee and Stuart Pylant.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald in 1997; brother, Mearl D. Dixon; and sister, Carol Jean Dixon.

FRANCIS EDWARD LAPOINTE


MASON CITY — Francis Edward Lapointe, 79, of 608 S. Carolina Ave., died Sunday (July 25, 2004) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Harry Koelker officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. followed by a wake service at 7 p.m.

For those wishing to contribute to a memorial, the family suggests Hospice of North Iowa or St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Francis was born Feb. 12, 1925, in Watertown, N.Y. to Joseph A. Lapointe and Alice M. (Durocher) Lapointe. He graduated from Immaculate Heart Academy in Watertown, N.Y. and then attended New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in New Hartford, N.Y., studying business management.

In 1948 he graduated and was hired by the J.C. Penney Company and sent to Waverly, Iowa, for management training. There he met Betty Lou Clapsaddle.

They were married in 1951 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mason City. They moved to Mason City in 1954 where Francis sold insurance and worked for Iowa Builders until 1955 when he was hired by Iowa Hardware Mutual Insurance Company (later Iowa Kemper) as a claims examiner.

In 1969 Francis started his own business, Lapointe Insurance Adjusters, which he owned and operated until 1983.

Francis was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Mason City Elks Lodge. He was a member of the National Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters and past President of the Northeast Iowa Insurance Adjusters Association. He was also a volunteer at North Iowa Mercy Hospital.

Francis enjoyed collecting antiques, writing poetry, playing 500 with his card club for more than 40 years, mall walking, meeting with a group of friends called the “Walkie Talkies,” and spending time with his family.

Francis is survived by his wife of 52 years, Betty Lou Lapointe; nine of his 10 children and 25 grandchildren: Joseph and children Francis and Ruth; Mary Jane (O.T. Kent) and children Daniel Lapointe Kent and Toumani Dembele; Nancy Drew (Clark) and children, Katie Despenas, Maggie Bennett, Beth Bennett and Jett Winders; John (Julie) and children Nick, Troy, Ryan and Marcie; Judy Lapointe Jennings (Steve) and children, Sean Jennings, Emily Hinojosa and Lindsay Jennings; Linda Asche (Dean) and children Greg Asche and Sarah Asche; Amy and children Jessy Bracklein, Willy Bracklein and James Bracklein; Timothy (Michelle) and children Phillip, Peter and Stephanie; and Thomas (Valerie) and children Ashley and Beau. Francis was also blessed with two great-grandchildren: Cami Despenas and Grant Lapointe.

Francis is also survived by his sister, Betty Jane Mount; his brother, Maurice (Ellen) Lapointe; his sister-in-law, Rita Lapointe; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, John and Lawrence; and his son Robert.

MASON CITY — Sally J. Craig, 63, of 925 N. Plaza Drive, Lot 69, in Apache Junction, Ariz. died Friday (June 25, 2004) at Kindred Hospital in North Scottsdale, Ariz. Sally and her husband, Robert E. Craig, formerly resided at 8 S. Virginia Ave. and 516 15th St. N.W. in Mason City

Graveside memorial services and inurnment of Sally’s cremated remains will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City with Pastor Paul C. Nelson officiating. The family will greet friends and relatives at that time.

Sally Jo Leen Craig was born April 29, 1941, in Mason City, to Lola (Burgess) and Martin Boomgarden Sr. She was the second oldest child born to her parents and spent most of her life in Mason City. Sally graduated in 1959 from Mason City High School.

She continued her education for the next two years at North Iowa Area Community College, graduating with a degree as a medical secretary.

Sally and Robert “Bob” E. Craig met in 1965 at the Rose Bowl in Mason City through friends, Bob and Darlene Inman. After dating for approximately five months, the couple was united in marriage on New Year’s Day, 1966 at the courthouse in Albert Lea, Minn. Together, they parented five children.

The entire family enjoyed many memorable and exciting adventures while camping at various campground sites in Iowa and Minnesota.

Sally and Bob treasured their time together and spent numerous hours on remodeling projects and watching movies.

Sally took great pride in nurturing her family, most recently, bonding with and spoiling her grandchildren.

She is lovingly remembered by her family as having an easy-going and robust personality, yet sometimes, she could be quite stubborn. Sally was known to have a great sense of humor.

Some of Sally’s favorite leisure activities and interests included creating ceramics, reading, collecting items for her curio hutch, purchasing and giving particular collection pieces to her grandchildren, knitting and crocheting.

Prior to relocating in Arizona, Sally loved playing cards and visiting with the “high school girls.”

Sally was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City, the V.F.W. and Women Of The Moose. She was employed by the State of Iowa at Family Planning in Mason City as a recording secretary.

Following their retirements, Bob and Sally “wintered” in Texas for the first four years and Arizona since 1999. They permanently moved to Apache Junction, Ariz., in November of 2001.

Sally will be sadly missed by all who have shared in her life.

She is survived by her husband, Bob, of Apache Junction, Ariz.; her children, Scott (Donna) Craig of Mason City; Tracy (Mike) Anderson of St. Ansgar; Roberta (Larry) Geer of Beaverton, Ore.; Ronald (Dora) Craig of Rio Rancho, N.M. and Edna Jean (Bill) Howell of Des Moines; her father, Martin Boomgarden Sr. of Mason City; her two sisters, Jean Dunbar of Nora Springs, and Ruth (John) Keller of Nampa, Idaho; and her brother, Martin (Joann) Boomgarden Jr. of Steamboat Springs, Colo. Sally will also be sadly missed by 16 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding Sally in death are her mother, Lola Boomgarden and her brother-in-law, Michael Dunbar.

DR. JAMES W. MCNITT


MASON CITY — Dr. James W. McNitt, 75, of Sun City, Ariz., formerly of Mason City, avid teacher, traveler and inspirational speaker, made his final journey into his new life in Christ on Tuesday (July 20, 2004).

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with graveside services immediately following visitation at Memorial Park Cemetery, 11495 265th St, Mason City with the Rev. Sam Hamilton-Poore of First Congregational United Church of Christ, officiating.

He was born on June 29, 1929, in Mason City, to Myra Reeve McNitt and Bert McNitt Sr.

He earned his degrees at the University of Northern Iowa/Iowa State Teachers College (B.A.), DePaul (M.A.) and Princeton (Ph.D.). He taught mathematics at Buffalo Grove High School, Illinois, until his retirement to Sun City 15 years ago.

His greatest love was teaching and all that would inspire his students (head of academic decathlons, speech and drama, director of musicals, athletic booster, etc.).

Along with his numerous teaching awards, he was a Heller Fellow and an active leader of many church and civic organizations including Kiwanis (Chairman of Scholarship Committee and Parliamentarian), Toastmasters (Lieutenant Governor of Arizona Chapter and past Governor of Illinois Chapter) and Special Olympics.

He judged at the Academic Decathlons at Arizona State University and taught at Apollo College, Rio Salado Community College and Dysart High School during his retirement.

He was an active member of United Church of Sun City, and sang in church choirs his entire life.

He is survived by two brothers, Bert Jr. (Wanda) of Vinton, and Orson Reeve (Opal) McNitt of Des Moines, Iowa; and a sister, Sarah Eike of Clarinda: eight nieces and nephews including, Ruth, of Arizona, Donna of Iowa, Michael of Minnesota, Tomas of Michigan, Lawrence, Rebecca, and Rachel of Iowa and John of New Mexico: and the numerous students who were blessed with his inspiration.

BELMOND — Jerry D. Wilhite, 65, of Belmond, died Sunday (July 25, 2004) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond with Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Inurnment will take place at the St. Francis Cemetery near Belmond. Graveside military rites will be performed by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home 111 Luick’s Lane S. in Belmond, with a 6:30 p.m. parish rosary and a Scriptural Wake service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

The body was cremated. There will be no viewing.

GRAFTON — Gladys A. Bowers, 97, of St. Ansgar, Iowa, formerly Grafton, died Monday (July 26, 2004) at the Good Samaritan Care Center in St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton, with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel in Manly, and then one hour before the service at the church.

The family suggests memorials to Gladys A. Bowers Memorial Fund.

Gladys was born Nov. 6, 1906, in rural Nora Springs, the daughter of Harrison and Minnie (Zemke) Benedict. She graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1924 and then attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Gladys married Elmer Bowers on Dec. 1, 1925, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. They bought the Schermerhorn Dairy in Mason City where she was the bookkeeper.

In 1955 they moved to Grafton where they owned and operated Farmers Sate Bank.

She enjoyed traveling, dancing, working in her garden, baking for her family and spending their winters in Arizona, where they met many friends.

She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton, Iowa.

Gladys will be sadly missed by her three children: Clarice Venechuk and her husband, Jack, of Grafton, Bud Bowers and his wife, Colleen, of Gilbert, Ariz. and Joy Buechele and her husband Jerry, of Grafton, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Cindy Retterath and her husband Gene, of Grafton, Sam Venechuk and his wife Shelly, of Northwood, Tracey Fossey and her husband, Mike, of St. Ansgar, Pam Symond and her husband, Shaun, of Flag Staff, Ariz., Rick Bowers, of Phoenix, Ariz., Andy Buechele and his wife, Lisa, of Grafton, and Sara Moroney and her husband, Steve, of Vista, Calif.; her 14 great-grandchildren Katie Jo Venechuk, Samuel Venechuk, Nicole Venechuk, Billy Retterath, Bob Retterath, Ben Retterath, Will Fossey, Tom Fossey, Brianne Fossey, Cody Thompson, Logan Bowers, Hayley Buechele, Dylan Buechele and Briar Buechele; two great-great-grandchildren Carter and Jenna Retterath.

NEW HAMPTON — Mark William Rethamel, 37, of New Hampton, died Saturday (July 24, 2004) at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Holy Family Parish-St. Mary’s Center in New Hampton, with Monsignor Carl Schmitt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in New Hampton.

EMMETSBURG — A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg for Philip Wellik, 40, who died Saturday, July 24.

Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg is in charge of the arrangements.

Philip Joseph Wellik was born July 24, 1964, in Britt, the son of Joseph and Gloria (Nielsen) Wellik. He graduated from Britt High School in 1982 and the University of Iowa in 1987.

On Aug. 21, 1987, Phil was united in marriage to Jane Carter in Clear Lake, Iowa. The couple started their lives together in St. Paul, Minn. where Phil began working with State Farm Insurance. The couple spent five years in Wisconsin with State Farm before moving to Emmetsburg. Phil started his insurance agency in Emmetsburg and Pocahontas in January of 1996.

Phil was very active in the community. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Rotary International.

He coached his sons in Little League, and he served on the Horizon’s Unlimited Board of Directors.

Phil enjoyed many things in life: reading, fishing, golf and almost every sport.

He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. His true hobby was spending time with Matt and Andrew, watching them grow and participate in their activities.

On Saturday, July 24, Phil passed away at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 40.

He is survived by his wife, Jane, of Emmetsburg; parents, Joe and Glo of West Des Moines; two sons, Matthew and Andrew; two brothers, Tim and wife, Wendi, of Austin, Texas and Pat and wife Molly of Apple Valley, Minn.; and two sisters, Lisa Utley and husband, Craig, of Muscatine, and Ann Loges and husband, Scott, of Forest City.

His grandparents preceded him in death.

Arnold Truman Ambroson, the son of Oscar T. and Tilda (Anderson) Ambroson, was born Feb. 9, 1913, at Leland.

He graduated from Leland High School and continued his education at Waldorf College in Forest City.

During his high school and college years he was active in sports.

On Oct. 14, 1938, he married Jean S. Evanson at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Leland. They lived in Leland all of their married life where they raised their family and Arnold farmed.

Arnold also worked for Interstate Power and at bin sites for sealing government corn.

He became a resident of Concord Care Center in Garner in June of 2003.

He enjoyed his family, farming, sports, politics and visiting with people. His smile and the gleam in his eye will be missed by all.

He was a lifetime member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where he served in many capacities over the years.

Arnold was very progressive and community minded. He served as mayor of Leland and was on the City Council for many years.

Arnold was instrumental in helping get water and a sewer system into Leland and developing the city park.

He also served on the Leland and Forest City school boards.

He is survived by his two children, Vance Ambroson and wife, Judy, of Leland and Debra Ward and husband, Bill, of Brighton, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Roger Ambroson and wife, Lavonne, of Lewiston, Idaho; two sisters, Carmen Romash of Anaheim, Calif. and Margaret Andrews of Laughlin, Nev.; and a sister-in-law, Pearl Ambroson of Fort Myers, Fla.

Arnold was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, on Aug. 7, 2003; daughter, Karen Boyd on Aug. 3, 1987; parents; and three brothers, Art, Oscar M. and Orrin Ambroson.

ARLENE A. SLUIK


MANLY — Arlene A. Sluik, 85, of 316 E. South St., died Sunday (July 25, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Bethel United Methodist Church, 503 E. South St., Manly, with the Rev. Ron Stein officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Arlene A. Sluik Memorial Fund.

Arlene was born Feb. 18, 1919, in rural Garner, the daughter of Harold and Martha (Lemke) Heimendinger. She graduated from Britt High School.

Arlene married John Sluik Oct. 2, 1939 in Britt. In 1952, they moved to the Manly area where they farmed for many years.

Arlene enjoyed crocheting, gardening, cooking and canning.

FOREST CITY — Ernest G. McClary, 68, of Forest City, died Monday (July 26, 2004) at his home in Forest City.

Ernest G. McClary was born in Washington, D.C., on June 7, 1936, the son of William and Mildred (Rasnick) McClary. He received his education in Washington, D.C.

Ernie served in the United States Air Force for 14 years, enlisting in 1953.

Following his discharge he worked for a brief time in Washington before moving to Forest City, Iowa.

Ernie began delivering motor homes for Winnebago Industries in 1969 and continued until his death.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting, playing his guitar and singing and was an accomplished practical joker.

He loved spending time with his family and they remember his wonderful cooking.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 121 in Forest City.

Ernie is survived by his children: Rick McClary, Kimberly Colby and husband, Danny, Tina Stinnett, Teresa Harmdierks and husband Mark, Tonya Stevens and special friend John Eberett, Tiffiney McClary and special friend Brett Hansen; 16 grandchildren; a few great-grandchildren; and his ex-wife, Donna McClary and her special friend, Larry Eiseman. Also surviving are three brothers and a sister: Robert Lusby and John and Donald McClary; and Deloris Conrad and husband Kenneth.

CLEAR LAKE — James Maurice Dunlay, 84, of Clear Lake, died Monday (July 26, 2004) at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

James was born Oct. 23, 1919, in Riceville, Iowa, the son of Vincent and Matilda (Kleckner) Dunlay. He attended Riceville High School.

James married Luella Marr Nov. 3, 1942, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven.

He lived in Milwaukee during World War II, where he worked at a defense factory building parts for planes.

James moved to New Haven where he farmed until moving to Waterloo in 1956. He was a salesman for Nutrena Foods.

In 1967, moved to Postville where he worked for the turkey plant in sales.

In 1980, he moved to Manson, where he was involved in Sears Catalog sales and operating a grocery business until he retired in 1992 and moved to Woden.

In 2001, he moved to Garner and in 2003 moved to Oakwood Care Center to be by his wife.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, going to ballgames and especially spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He loved telling stories and having coffee while visiting with friends.

James will be sadly missed by three children: Ronald Dunlay and his wife, Sue, of Ft. Madison, Kathy Mortensen and her husband, Ken, of Ventura, and John Dunlay and his wife, Debbie, of Cheyenne, Wyo.; 15 grandchildren: Jennifer and her husband, Derek, Sara and her husband, Ryan, Ronnie, Joe, Bridget, Angela, Chris, Kristi, Aaron, Nate and his wife, Heather, Chad, Amy, Patricia, Shelly and her husband, Fred, and David and his wife, Joy; nine great-grandchildren, Alyssa, James, Anthony, Jordan, Hunter, Tucker, Sarah, Evan and Ethan; one sister, Dorothy Fox and her husband, James; and one brother, Terry Dunlay and his wife, Diane; and several nieces and nephews.

ARNOLD T. ‘RUNT’ AMBROSON


LELAND — Arnold T. “Runt” Ambroson, 91, of Leland, died Sunday (July 25, 2004) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

His funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. today at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Leland, with the Rev. Jacqueline Swanson officiating. Burial will be at Forest Home Cemetery, Leland.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service today at the church.

Arnold Truman Ambroson, the son of Oscar T. and Tilda (Anderson) Ambroson, was born Feb. 9, 1913 at Leland.

He graduated from Leland High School and continued his education at Waldorf College in Forest City.

During his high school and college years he was active in sports.

On Oct. 14, 1938, he married Jean S. Evanson at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Leland. They lived in Leland all of their married life, where they raised their family and Arnold farmed.

Arnold also worked for Interstate Power and at bin sites for sealing government corn.

He became a resident of Concord Care Center in Garner in June 2003.

He enjoyed his family, farming, sports, politics and visiting with people. His smile and the gleam in his eye will be missed by all.

He was a lifetime member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, where he served in many capacities over the years.

Arnold was very progressive and community-minded. He served as mayor of Leland and was on the city council for many years.

Arnold was instrumental in helping get water and sewer into Leland and developing the city park.

He also served on the Leland and Forest City school boards.

He is survived by his two children, Vance Ambroson and wife, Judy, of Leland and Debra Ward and husband, Bill, of Brighton, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Roger Ambroson and wife, Lavonne, of Lewiston, Idaho; two sisters, Carmen Romash of Anaheim, Calif., and Margaret Andrews of Laughlin, Nev.; and a sister-in-law, Pearl Ambroson of Ft. Myers, Fla.

Arnold was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, on Aug. 7, 2003; daughter, Karen Boyd on Aug. 3, 1987; parents; and three brothers, Art, Oscar M. and Orrin Ambroson.

CLEAR LAKE — Donna Isabelle Luscomb, 77, 405 27th Ave. S., Clear Lake, died Tuesday (July 27, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Donna was born Dec. 14, 1926, in Mason City, the daughter of Forrest and Irene (Shaffer) Judd.

She enjoyed traveling and painting.

Helen Arlene Orcutt was born Sept. 2, 1906, in Plainfield, a daughter of Clarence M. And Mamie (Krieger) Orcutt, and died Wednesday (July 28, 2004) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

She received her education and graduated from the Plain-field High School in 1925. While attending High School she played basketball in which she held the record for the most points (60) earned in a single game, for many years.

As a young lady she played piano for the movie theater in Plainfield.

She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and then taught rural school in Western Douglas (rural Plainfield) and in the Aredale Public Schools.

On Sept. 15, 1929, she was united in marriage to Russell Wayne Meyers at her parents’ home in Plainfield. To this union there were born three children: Marlene Jean, and twins: Marcele Rae and Maurice Jay.

They made their home in Tripoli until 1937, when they moved to Waterloo. The following year they moved to Greene where they owned and operated the Gambles Hardware Store for 26 years.

Following their retirement, they traveled throughout the United States except for Alaska. In the winter months they lived in the Southern States.

Helen was baptized in the Cedar River, in the fall of 1919, and became a member of the Plainfield Baptist Church in 1921.

In 1939 she joined the First Presbyterian Church in Greene, where she taught Sunday School for 15 years and was superintendent of the Sunday School for many years.

She was past president of the Presbyterian Women, and was a faithful member to her church.

Helen loved her Lord first, then her family and friends.

She was a charter member of the Greene Woman’s Club, and a 60-year member of the order of Eastern Star.

Living family members include two daughters: Marlene Miller and Marcele Brandt (Mel) Kramer, both of Allison; seven grandchildren: Robin (Danny) Fouch of Garwin, Kevin Miller of Waterloo, Tim (Julie) Miller of Charles City, Marcy Lynn (Dave) Ubben of Winfield, Kent (Melaine) Brandt of Verona, Wis., Stacy (Rod) Wagsness of Allison, and Amy (Chuck) Illg of Spencer; 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband on March 6, 1982; her son: Maurice Jay Meyers who died in infancy; her sons-in-law: Donald Brinkman, Joe Miller, and Steve Brandt; her parents; and one brother: Kenneth Orcutt.

Helen Viola McDonald, was born Aug. 10, 1914, at Titonka, Iowa. She was the daughter of Doud and Hilka (Jaspers) Smith. Vi graduated from the Burt High school.

She was then employed by the Howard McMullen Grocery Store.

Helen Viola Smith and Francis Hugh McDonald were married at her parents’ home in Burt on May 27, 1938. Francis died in 1951.

From 1951 until 1966 Vi was a cook at the Burt High School and during the summer cooked at the Boy Scout Camp in Okoboji.

In 1966 she took a position with Morningside College first as the director of the men’s dorm and later as the director of the Student Union. She retired from Morningside College in 1976.

Vi returned to the Burt and Algona area where she worked in the Advanced Care System for two years until her advancing arthritis caused her to retire.

In November of 1999, Vi moved to Monticello to be near her family.

Vi was a member of the United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and the Eastern Star, where she had served as Worthy Matron.

BELMOND — Gerhard Arnold Gabrielson, 91, of Belmond, passed away Monday (July 26, 2004) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Gerhard, the son of Gabriel and Anna Sunde-Peterson Gabrielson, was born March 24, 1913, near Belmond in Wright County, Iowa.

He was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf Church rural Belmond. He received his education in rural Wright County schools.

Gerhard was united in marriage to Marion Odegard of Waterville, Iowa, on Jan. l5, l938 at St. John’s Lutheran parsonage in Waukon, Iowa, by the Rev. P. F. Kjorlaug.

They farmed in the Belmond and Waterville areas for more than 30 years.

In 1972, they moved to Waukon where Gerhard did painting, drove a school bus, and was foreman for the Allamakee County road workers. In l978, they moved to Belmond.

He enjoyed farm life, family, fishing, gardening and flowers.

Gerhard was a member of the Switzerland of Iowa Barber Shoppers in Waukon for 13 years.

He was an active member of Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church of rural Waterville and was serving as president when he moved to Belmond.

He was a faithful member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and sang with the men’s chorus for many years.

KENSETT — Steven Alex Heagel, 51, 1656 410th St. in Kensett, died Wednesday (July 28, 2004) at his home.

Steven Alex Heagel was born July 28, 1953, in Mason City, a son of Alex and Evelyn (Schutz) Heagel.

He attended and graduated from Northwood-Kensett High School.

After high school he help-ed farm around the Kensett area. He also worked at the Bolan Store and with Armour in Mason City.

He married Melba (Spooner) Heagel on Dec. 28, 1974, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly.

To this union four children were born. Recently, he was employed through Staff Management with Kraft in Mason City.

Steve loved farming, fishing, hunting, and cooking, but his greatest love was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by parents, Alex and Evelyn Heagel, of Kensett; four children, Kathy and her husband, Aaron Pals, of Manly, Scott and his wife, Julie Heagel, of Manly, Karen Heagel, of Mason City, and Kourtney Heagel, of Manly; sisters, Janet and her husband, Larry Johnson, of Owatonna, Minn., Beverly Loberg, of Northwood, Mary and her husband, Steve Wise, of Manly, and Carol and her husband, Dale Hennigar, of Manly; grandchildren, Austin and Carter Pals, of Manly, Kaylee and Garrett Heagel, of Manly, Nathaniel Baker and Alycia Heagel, of Mason City, along with many nieces and nephews.

CLEAR LAKE — Lisle Dewey Whisler, 93, of 2400 S. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Tuesday (July 27, 2004) at the IOOF Home in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N Fourth St. in Clear Lake. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Lisle was born June 3, 1911, at Midland, S.D., the son of Eugene and Irene (Powell) Whisler.

Lisle graduated from Midland High School and then attended and graduated from the Open Bible Institute in Des Moines.

Lisle married Elaine Rowcliffe in South Dakota. He pioneered churches in South Dakota before moving to Webster City.

After Elaine passed away due to cancer, Lisle married Marlys Wagner Hawkinson on May 11, 1973, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Lisle also was custodian for the Clear Lake Open Bible Camp grounds, and worked at Opportunity Village, retiring in 1984.

In 1985, they moved to Minnesota where he was a fill-in pastor for several churches and a Bible study minister.

Lisle and Marlys wintered at Clear Lake and in May 2002, he entered the IOOF Home.

He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Mountain Lake, Minn., enjoyed playing the organ and veggie gardening.

Lisle is survived by his wife, Marlys Whisler, of Clear Lake; four children, Dan (Kathy) Whisler of Des Moines, Mary Lee (Ean) Hastie of Denver, Colo., Sharon (Darwin) McIntosh of Colville, Wash., and Byron (Vicki) Whisler, of Cucamonga, Calif.; six grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Whisler, of Midland, S.D.; one step-daughter, Kathy (Jerry) Nydegger of Redwood Falls, Minn.; two step-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and friends.

His parents; first wife Elaine; three brothers; five sisters; and a granddaughter, Sherry Moore, preceded him in death.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Joyce E. (Andersen) Sanders, 48, passed away Wednesday (July 28, 2004) at her residence in Kansas City, Mo.

Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at North Heartland Community Church. Mrs. Sanders was cremated.

Joyce was born on June 5, 1956, in Mason City, to Donald E. and Lorraine B. (Frahm) Andersen. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1974.

Following high school, she joined the United States Air Force, where she served for four years.

While in the Air Force, Joyce married Larry Sanders on Aug. 23, 1975, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

She received her associates degree from Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, N.C., and her bachelors degree from North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, N.C.

Upon moving to the Kansas City area, Mrs. Sanders taught preschool in the Park Hill School District.

Joyce was a member of North Heartland Community Church.

Mrs. Sanders was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Larry; one son, Clint, both of Kansas City, Mo.; one brother and sister-in-law, Ron Andersen and Tyies; niece and nephew, Ally and Ryan.

CHARLES CITY — Mason Bunn, 75, of 3304 220th St., Charles City, died Friday (July 30, 2004) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Mason Luverne Bunn was born Sept. 6, 1928, on the family farm in Floyd County, the son of Kenneth and Isabelle (Channer) Bunn.

He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1946.

On Aug. 16, 1947, he was united in marriage with Phyllis Martens at the St. John Evangelical Church in Charles City.

Mason was engaged in farming and also had worked as a brick layer for Bonner and Winterink Construction and spent 10 years with Oliver/White Farm.

He was an avid outdoorsman loving fishing at Red Wing, hunting, feeding squirrels, and bird and deer watching.

Those thankful for having shared in his life include his wife, Phyllis; four children, Linda (Gary) Gerritson, of Floyd, Vernette (Robert) Stewart, of Ionia, Steve (Michelle) Bunn, of Keystone, and Cherri (Dennis) Bonwell, of Clear Lake; 12 grandchildren, Michelle (Brian) Gerritson Shimek, Michael Gerritson and fiancée, Andrea, Dustin Stewart and special friend, Jennifer, Nickolas (Christina) Stewart, Jason (Vicky) Bunn, Angela Bunn and special friend Shane, Kelly Bunn and special friend Dan, Ben Bunn, Melissa Kluth, Beau Kluth, Camrean Bonwell and fiancée, Loretta, and Jodi (Mark) Bonwell Bergan; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Phyllis had lived in Cedar Rapids from 1942 to 1954.

She was united in marriage on March 28, 1953 to Carroll W. “Kelly” Nelson at the Little Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua.

Phyllis had lived in Brooklyn, Iowa for eight years prior to moving to Newton in 1961.

She had been employed in her younger years at J.C. Penny Company and at the Holiday Inn.

She enjoyed sewing and baking, but most of all she loved her family.

She loved to watch Iowa and Iowa State basketball on TV.

CLEAR LAKE — Larry L. Benson, 56, of 709 S. Ninth St. in Clear Lake, died Friday (July 30, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, from a long battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors by the 1133rd Transportation Unit.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and then one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church.

Larry was born Jan. 6, 1948, in Harlan, Iowa the son of Bert and Agneta (Flug) Benson in Harlan, Iowa. He graduated from Ventura High School in 1967.

He entered the United States Navy and served during the Vietnam War.

Following the service with the Navy he joined the 1133rd Transportation Unit and served during Operation Desert Storm and was a member for 22 years.

Larry married Judy Dyre Nov. 16, 1973, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura.

Larry had worked for the City of Clear Lake in the Street Department for more than 28 years.

He enjoyed woodworking, riding his motorcycle, bowling, racing his hornet at the fair grounds and spending time with his grandsons.

He was a member of Clear Lake CB Club (Muddy Pond) and was known as the “Paper Tiger” until the club disbanded; a member of the Clear Lake Volunteer Fire Department for more than 13 years and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Larry is survived by his two children: Trinity Benson and his wife Erica and their two children, Nathan and Pierce Benson, of Clear Lake, and Terry Benson, of Clear Lake, and her fiance, Jon Moritz, of Ventura; his brother, Gary Benson and his wife Sibyl, of Dalton, Ga.; his four sisters, Ardelle Pope, of Harlan, Rosemary Gross and her husband, Russell, of Aurora, Minn., Betty Page, of Albert Lea, Minn. and Carol Steinlicht, of Garner; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Colleen and Jim Dyre, of Clear Lake; and several nieces and nephews.
