GLEE BELLE MENNENGA


BELMOND — Glee Belle Mennenga, 81, of Belmond, passed away Saturday (July 3, 2004) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services for Glee Belle Mennenga will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel Reformed Church near Belmond, with Pastor Rob Ford officiating. Burial will take place in the Alexander Cemetery near Alexander.

Visitation for Glee Belle Mennenga will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane S. in Belmond and one hour prior to services at the church.

Glee, the daughter of Clarence and Violet Raymond Hill, was born July 21, 1922, in Clear Lake. She was raised in the Clear Lake area and graduated from Clear Lake High School.

During World War II, Glee was employed at an airplane factory in Omaha, Neb. She later worked at Winnebago Industries in Forest City, but first and foremost she was a housewife and mother.

On Feb. 28, 1946, Glee was united in marriage with Elmer Waltzing in Klemme. To this union five children were born. Elmer passed away in 1977.

Glee was united in marriage with Don Mennenga on January 4, 1979, in Belmond. Don passed away in 1983.

She also enjoyed many years of companionship with Ed Pals.

Glee’s many hobbies included dancing at the Surf, cooking, quilting, playing Uno with her grandchildren and playing cards with friends. She loved cooking and washing clothes.

A member of Immanuel Reformed Church in Belmond, Glee was also active in the Women’s Group. She enjoyed the time spent with the Pleasant Peppy Pals 4-H club as a leader and judge.

Glee Belle is survived by two daughters, Jolene DeCarlo and her husband, Charles, of Truro and Janice Creason and her husband, Chris, of Perry; two sons, John Waltzing and his wife, Lee Ann, of Belmond and Doug and his wife, Barb, of Belmond; son-in-law Larry Tisor and Becky of Mason City; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; extended family: Dave Mennenga of Grand Island, Neb., Bob Mennenga and his wife, Pat of Omaha, Neb., and Marcia Bergmark and husband, Frank, of Grand Island, Neb.; brother, Elston (Tony) Hill and his wife, Barbara, of Springfield, Mo.; two sisters: Marguerite Hoffland and her husband, Edward, of Cresco, and Geri Klesel and her husband, George, of Springfield, Mo.; and sister-in-law, Mina Hill, of Laguna Hills, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Elmer and Don; daughter Marilyn; special friend, Ed Pals; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth; brother, Vern Hill; and sister, Edna Morgan.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Jeanette Elvelyn Pieratt, 82, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Joice and Fertile, Iowa, died Monday (July 5, 2004) at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton.

GARNER — Marie A. Tusha, 70, of Garner, formerly of Englewood, Ohio, died Sunday (July 4, 2004) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., after a lingering illness.

Her funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Duncan.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Marie Agnes Tusha, the daughter of John and Anna (Tlach) Tusha, was born Jan. 16, 1934, on a farm west of Garner. She attended country school at Garfield No. 8. She lived with her family on the farm until moving to Dayton, Ohio at the age of 21.

She worked at General Motors in Dayton until retiring in May of 1996. She also managed an apartment building and worked part-time at Diet Workshop for 20 years.

Following her retirement, she moved to Englewood, Ohio, and worked at Elder Beermans Department Store until January of 2003.

In May of 2003, Marie moved to Garner to be closer to her family.

She was a very generous person who enjoyed entertaining, cooking and traveling.

She was a member of St Wenceslaus Catholic Church.

She is survived by her brother, George (Mary Lou) Tusha of Garner; a brother-in-law, Raymond (Vivian) Steven of Algona; four nephews, Raymond Steven Jr. of Coon Rapids, Minn., Tim (Ellen) Tusha of Garner, Tom (Teri) Tusha of Clear Lake, and Ted (Christa) Tusha of Garner; seven great-nieces and nephews; and many friends in Dayton and Englewood, Ohio.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Agnes Steven; and a sister-in-law, Darlene Tusha.

CLEAR LAKE — Eugene F. Burris, 91, of 705 Third Ave. N. in Clear Lake, died Tuesday (June 15, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services on Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.

Gene was born Aug. 22, 1912, the son of Marshall and Mary (Wass) Burris, at Mason City.

After graduation from Mason City High School in 1933, he worked as a salesman in the Davenport area.

He met Dorothy Woehlk during that time and they were married March 27, 1937, at the Little Brown Church at Nashua. Eventually they settled in Clear Lake.

Gene spent four years helping build the Alcan Highway in Canada. He later worked for Williams Pipeline Company and retired in 1977 after 32 years of employment.

Gene was a jack-of-all-trades and a skilled carpenter with the ability to build or fix almost anything. He finished construction on the family home in 1950 where he remained active until his death.

He also built a much-enjoyed cabin in Colorado and a number of toys and playthings for his children and grandchildren.

For many years he won the outdoor lighting contest and continued his tradition of Christmas lighting through the past holiday season.

Gene was an avid fisherman, boater, and outdoor enthusiast with a fondness for animals.

He was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Gene is survived by three children, Ron (Brenda) Burris of Horse Shoe, N.C.; Dennis (Barbara) Burris of Dexter, Ore.; and Wendy (Will) Keen of Mason City; 13 grandchildren, Jon, Jeff, Roddy and Tom Burris; Heather Preston, Briceanne Bailey, Nancy Frame, Brent Bailey, Johannah Keil, Korenza Burris, Jennifer, Aimee and Nathan Keen; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy; brother Merlin Burris; and sister Evelyn Wakefield.

ST. ANSGAR — Grace McMullen, 84, of St. Ansgar, died Friday (July 2, 2004) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in St. Olaf Cemetery, New Richland, Minn. with graveside services at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

Grace Harriet Dorothy McMullen was born at Geneseo, Ill. (Edford Township) on Feb. 8, 1920, the daughter of Gustav and Anna (Menzenberg) Neumann. She received her education in the Geneseo school system.

She was united in marriage to Lawrence McMullen on Feb. 14, 1941. He preceded her in death on May 6, 1979.

For most of her married life she lived in Minneapolis, Minn., where her husband was in law enforcement.

She was a beautician most of her life, and had various other jobs as a book-keeper and in sales. She lived in New Richland for 16 years from 1973-1989, and for the last 15 years in St. Ansgar, Iowa.

After moving to St. Ansgar, she worked at the Nissen Public Library until her full retirement in 2002.

Grace was a member of Order of Easter Star, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and a Senior Advocate for the Agency on Aging. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar and active in the Deborah Circle.

She had a zest for living life to its’ fullest and her philosophy was “Keep Learning as though you are going to live forever, and live as though you are going to die tomorrow!”

Besides her husband, she also was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, two sisters and one grandson.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Sharon (Mrs. Donald Deming) and Susan (Mrs. Merlyn Thorson); six grandchildren: Susan Boush, Rebecca Rumpf, Janice Whelan, Cory Thorson, Allison Thorson and Greg Thorson; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Vandersnick of Rock Falls, Ill.; and numerous neices and nephews.

VENTURA — Marie Hamann, 96, of Ventura, died Sunday (July 4, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura, with the Rev. Daird W. Korth officiating. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake. Visitation will also be one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church.

The family of Marie Hamann has requested that memorial contributions be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura or Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.

Marie was born Oct. 3, 1907, in Adel, Iowa, the daughter of Fred E. and Virgie (Potter) Wilson. Marie attended school in Clear Lake.

She was united in marriage to George Hamann on July 3, 1925. He preceded her in death in 1977.

In 1934, George and Marie built the Heidelberg Supper Club in Luana, Iowa, and owned and operated the supper club until 1952.

In 1958, the family began farming in the rural Ventura area and after her husband’s death in 1977, Marie continued to farm until the time of her death.

She loved and enjoyed taking care of the farm, gardening, and flowers.

She was the oldest member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura and was also a member of the Dorcas Society.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Betty Nolan of Naperville, Ill.; four great-grandchildren, William C. Nolan III, of Aurora, Ill., Carolyn Nolan of Aurora, Jeffrey Kennedy of Naperville, and Meghan Kennedy of Naperville; a brother, Bill Wilson and his wife, Elsie, of Ventura; many nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband she was also preceded in death by her parents, two grandchildren, William C. Nolan Jr., and Carol Kennedy; a great-grandson, John Nolan; five brothers, Harold, Nile, Jim, George, and Henry Wilson; and two sisters, Margie Walker and Mary Byerly.

FOREST CITY — Linda R. Finger, 56, 2330 330th St., Forest City, died Monday (July 5, 2004) at her home.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Ed Bard officiating. Interment will be held at Clear Lake Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa in her name.

Linda was born Dec. 9, 1947, in Mason City, the daughter of George F. and Nina (Zimmel) Hoffman. Linda attended Clear Lake High School. She worked as a waitress at the Holiday Inn in Mason City and Winnebago for over 20 years with Stitch Craft.

Linda married Dale Finger Jan. 4, 1992, at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller.

Linda was an avid Coca-Cola collector. She loved her animals and raising flowers. She was excellent mother and wife.

She was an outstanding cook and loved to entertain her relatives. Linda enjoyed fishing and driving through Pilot Knob.

She was diagnosed with cancer and had been receiving wonderful care from Midwest Regional Medical Cancer Center, in Zion, Ill.

Linda is survived by her husband, Dale Finger, of Forest City; a daughter, Melody Solvwisch and her husband, Scott, of Forest City; a son, Shannon Torkelson, of Forest City; stepson, Tyrel Finger, of Forest City; stepdaughter, Micah Finger, of Rock Valley; stepgrandson, Tylen Finger, of Fredericksburg; three sisters, Betty Lunn and her husband, George, of Clear Lake, Evelyn Frank, of Mason City, and Judy Bisher and her husband, Glen, of Citrus Heights, Calif.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Keith Hoffman and Gary Hoffman Sr.; and one sister, Marlene Stevens.

KIESTER, Minn. — Alpha M. Braund, 94, of Kiester, Minn., died Monday (July 5, 2004) at Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Kiester, Minn., with the Rev. Dick Steffen officiating. Interment will be in Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery in Kiester.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home in Wells, Minn., and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

Alpha was born on Sept. 10, 1909, in Mount Valley Township, Winnebago County, Iowa, the daughter of Alf and Ingre Marie (Volstad) Thorson. She grew up in Mount Valley Township and attended school there and Lake Mills High School.

She married Chester Braund on Jan. 30, 1927, at Winnebago Lutheran Church. She lived her entire life in the Lake Mills and Kiester areas.

She was an executive manager and charter member of Tupperware Home Parties. All of her grandchildren knew her as “Tupperware Grandma” and she has a great-grandchild working in the Tupperware corporate office.

She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, was president of the Martha Circle (now Sarah Circle) for 40 years, taught Sunday school for many years, and was secretary of the WELCA.

Alpha was a 4-H leader and served as historian of the Thorson/Brue family for 36 years, visiting her ancestors in Norway four times.

She was a very active family-oriented Christian lady who led a very exemplary life.

She is survived by five children, Vernon (wife Bonita) Braund, of Walters, Minn., Marlys (husband Robert) Harig, of Emmons, Minn., Jean (husband Wayne) Ellertson, of Charles City, Keith (wife Alice) Braund, of Emmons, and Lynn (husband John) Wirkkala, of Westminster, Colo.; son-in-law, Roger Oldfather, of Kiester; 18 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, John Thorson, of Albert Lea, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1966; one daughter, LaVonne; one sister, Mabel Theodora; five brothers, Herman, twins Marvin and Marvel, Harold Thorson, and a brother Herman in infancy; and three grandchildren, Randy and Vern Braund, and Kristi Harig; one great-granddaughter, Stacey Halvorsen.

CLEAR LAKE — Wayne “Shorty” Spilman, 74, 14754 Evergreen, Clear Lake, died Monday (July 5, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, and one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Memorials may be given to the Wayne Spilman Memorial Fund.

Shorty was born Oct. 26, 1929, on the family farm south of Clear Lake, the son of Daniel and Alphena (Thompson) Spilman Jr. He attended rural schools.

Shorty served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. When he came back to Clear Lake he farmed the family farm with his brothers and father.

Shorty married Phyllis “Till” Kelley on Oct. 10, 1954, at Zion Lutheran Church.

Shorty and Till enjoyed going to sales and collecting antiques.

They enjoyed their many family pets including their pet cow Josie. He had a great love for cattle and horses.

Shorty could tell a joke like nobody else. He loved visiting. He was loved by all and never met a stranger.

Shorty was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, and the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Shorty is survived by his wife, Phyllis “Till” Spilman, of Clear Lake; three sisters, Thelma Duregger, of Clear Lake, Helen Duregger, and her husband, Fred, of Newport News, Va., and Betty Thomas, of Clear Lake; two brothers, Sam Spilman, of Clear Lake, and Daniel T. Spilman, of Clear Lake; two sisters-in-law, Audrey Spilman and Alma Spilman, both of Clear Lake; and many nieces and nephews.

Shorty was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Orval and Dale Spilman; and many wonderful pets.

Richard Leo Rohwedder was born March 5, 1922, in Greene, the son of Leo and Bessie (Johnston) Rohwedder, and died Sunday (July 4, 2004) at his home in Greene.

He received his education in Greene public schools, graduating in 1941.

He was united in marriage to Carole M. Borchard, on Dec. 23, 1942, at St. Peter Lutheran parsonage in Greene.

They made their home in Greene and surrounding area their entire married life.

Richard was a farmer, rural mail carrier, and school bus driver.

Dick enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, as well as dancing, playing cards, gardening, and working in his wood shop.

Since his retirement he enjoyed wintering in Texas with his wife.

Richard was a confirmed member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Carole of Greene; his son, Gordon (Cheryl) Rohwedder of Marble Rock; his daughter, Gloria (Roger) Stover of Dows; four grandchildren, Randy Rohwedder, Brad (Friend Laura) Rohwedder, Troy (Merry) Stover, and Wesley (Stacey) Stover; nine great-grandchildren, Christopher, Scott, and Terry Stover, Brooke, Kelsey, and Kamron Rohwedder; Brady, Trinity, and Blake Stover.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

RAYMOND L. STINIKER


ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Raymond L. Stiniker, 94, of Albuquerque, N.M., died on June 17, 2004.

Raymond was born in Hayfield, Iowa, to parents William and Augusta (Wolter) Stiniker. He attended and graduated from Hayfield High School and Waldorf College in Forest City.

He married Luella Pint on Feb. 14, 1939, and they embraced 56 years of married life. Luella preceded him in death on June 1, 1995.

Raymond is survived by a son, Craig, who resides in Albuquerque; and a granddaughter, Danielle Stiniker, of Lubbock, Texas.

Raymond is survived by two sisters, Gladys Bingham, 98, of Norwalk, Calif., and Ella Stoltenberg, 94, of Nora Springs.

He was preceded in death by two other brothers, Wesley, of Garner, and Walter, of Payette, Idaho; three sisters, Laura McFarling, of Crystal Lake, Esther Stoltenberg, of Belmond, and Fern Hamand, of Rockford.

Raymond and his brothers and sisters were all born at Hayfield. They came from a loving family and enjoyed each other’s company throughout their years. His memory will be cherished by us all.

Dale G. Perry was born Dec. 21, 1926, to Ernest and C. Jean (Brown) Perry in Northwood.

Dale served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1947 in Korea and Hawaii. During his year in Hawaii he polished his bowling skills and learned to play golf, which was his passion in later life.

Dale loved to play the Rice Lake course. When his health stopped him from actively playing golf he still enjoyed working in the clubhouse.

Dale was a member of the Eagles and Solos and Singles in Albert Lea, Minn., and enjoyed those fellowships, especially when playing cards.

Dale is survived by his three daughters, Teresa of Edwardsville, Ill., Vicki of Burnsville, Minn., and Sue of Sahuarita, Ariz.; and one son, Steve, of Mason City; three brothers and three sisters: Ilene Shinn of Northwood, Ruth Perry and Loraine Berg of Albert Lea, Earl of Albert Lea, Jerry of St. Paul, Minn., and Lawrence, of Winona, Minn.

Dale leaves five grandchildren, Nicole (Foster) Hudson, Hannah and Naomi Tucker, and Philip and Dylan Colby; and one great-grandchild, Abigail Hudson.

Douglas James Anderson, son of Walter and Dorothy Johnson Anderson, was born April 25, 1951, at Minneapolis, Minn. He received his education at New Hampton High School, graduating in 1969. He received a B.A. from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon in 1973. He received his masters of divinity from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in May 1977.

On June 30, 1984, he was married to Gayle Lynne Sjoblom at New Brighton, Minn.

During his pastoral ministry, Doug served First United Methodist Church in Boone, Riverside UMC in Fort Dodge; Grace UMC in Glenwood; Immanuel UMC in Des Moines; First UMC in Mason City and most recently was appointed to Asbury UMC in Webster City.

He had served as chair of membership division of the Board of Ordained Ministry, as a member of board of trustees for Cornell College, chair of Mason City Ministerial Association and various other involvements.

Pastor Doug is survived by his loving wife, Gayle; daughters, Emily and Rachel Anderson of Webster City; sisters and brothers-in-law, Karen Anderson of New Hampton, Linda and Zip Zeimetz of Elma, Sue and Norm Pihale of Burnsville, Minn., and Nancy Anderson of Plymouth, Minn.; several nieces and nephews; a great-niece and many loving extended family and friends.

Rebecca K. Williams was born in Paradise, Calif., on Aug. 5, 1983, the daughter of Kevan and Sharon (Taylor) Williams. She moved with her family to Mason City when she was 10 years old. She later made her home in Forest City.

Becca wrote poetry and liked to draw. She loved animals, enjoyed going fishing and working on her puzzles.

She was challenged by cystic fibrosis her entire life and dealt with all the difficulties and treatments with a positive attitude.

She is survived by her parents, Sharon Youngton and husband, Steve, of Forest City, and Kevan Williams, of Cottonwood, Calif.; and step-grandmother, Mary Anderson of Fertile. Also surviving are two brothers and two sisters, Justin Williams of Cottonwood, Kevan Williams of Crescent City, Calif., Carrie Taylor and Jesse O’Toole of Madison, S.D., and Sara and Duane Zens, of Madison; eight nieces and nephews, Jordyn, Hunter, Hailey, CJ, Sweet Pea, Zoe, Xavier and Marcus; paternal grandparents, Ed and Carol Williams of Concord, Calif.; her fiance, Ryan Williams; his parents, Jackie and Russell Williams; and his sisters, Angel and Angela, all of Forest City.

Lori A. Milbrath was born on Nov. 22, 1961, the daughter of Dave and Marge Milbrath in Mason City. Lori attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1980.

She then enlisted in the United States Navy, where she served four years.

While in the Navy she was united in marriage to Jay P. Duncan in Beeville, Texas. To this union, two children were born, Kandace D. “Kandie” Duncan and Amber J. Duncan.

Following their honorable discharge from the Navy, they moved to Des Moines where they later divorced.

Lori and the children moved back to Mason City and she worked for Fieldstone Cabinet Co.

She loved her children so very much and spent as much time with them as she could. Lori also liked to bake and spend time with her friends and family.

She is survived by her parents, David and Marge Milbrath, of Mason City; brother, Robert Milbrath and wife, Connie, of Mason City; sister, Mary Buckley and husband, Darren, of Mason City; one niece and two nephews, Jadda, Brad and Brock; and several aunts and uncles.

She attended Wright Junior College in Chicago, receiving her associate of arts degree, North Iowa Area Community College, receiving her associate of science degree, and Buena Vista University, receiving her bachelors degree in business.

She moved to Chicago in 1956 to attend Northwest Radio and Television School.

While attending school she worked at Chicago O’Hare International North Central Airlines in passenger relations and teaching. She returned to Clear Lake in 1967 to take care of her mother.

Ruth’s hobbies were sewing and knitting her own clothes.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Clear Lake.

She is survived by special friend, Roy Larson, of Clear Lake; three sisters, Frances and her husband, William Murray, of Arizona, Theresa and her husband, Led Smith, of Faribault, Minn., and Elizabeth Ramler, of San Diego, Calif.

James F. McGrath, the son of Frederick and Ruth (Brooker) McGrath, was born on a farm near Miller, on April 21, 1919. He was raised on a farm in the Thompson area and graduated from Thompson High School.

On Dec. 22, 1940, James was united in marriage to Mildred Wirtjes. Four children were born to this union, Mike, Jack, Gene and Gloria.

James and Mildred farmed in the Woden, Buffalo Center and Thompson areas for the next 33 years.

In 1973, they purchased a farm near Joice, where James continued to farm until he suffered a stroke in 2003.

James was a member of the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center.

He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participating in sporting activities.

James is survived by a brother, Richard, of Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Kathy McGrath of Mt. Ayr, a son, Jack and his wife, Terry, of Aiken, S.C.; a son Gene and his wife, Karen, of Mason City; a daughter, Gloria Boggess and her husband, Lee, of Fort Madison. Also, six grandchildren, Patrick McGrath and his wife, Lisa, Dawn Dolecheck and her husband, Eric, Lisa Jones and her husband, Chris, Matt, Kris and Danny Boggess; and four great-grandchildren, Lindsey, Lauren, Kyler and Kaitlyn.

William Russell Failor Sr. was born April 15, 1921, in Hannibal, Mo., to Charles LeRoy and Alice (Slaggsen) Failor.

He received his education in the Hannibal Public Schools, graduating in 1939.

On Nov. 29, 1980, Bill was united in marriage to Irene Helene (Roggeman) Pierson in Mason City.

Bill faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, enlisting on June 14, 1942. He was honorably discharged in 1943.

After returning home from the service he had lived in Hannibal and later moved to Mason City where he made his home for 30 years.

Bill was employed as plasterer in the construction trade for many years. This was Bill’s passion in life and he mastered and labored his craft well.

Some of Bill’s leisure activities and interests included spending time with his wife, family and children of all ages, attending yard and rummage sales, buying and selling cars and working with plaster — it was truly his life’s work.

Bill was a faithful member of the Moose Lodge in Mason City and a former member of the American Legion in Hannibal.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Bill’s life are his loving wife, Irene Helene Failor, of Mason City; five children, Robert Lee Failor Sr., Larry Wayne Failor Sr. and Basil Allen Failor Sr., all of Hannibal; Gail Ann (Failor) Rothweiler of Palmyra, Mo., and Terry Joe Failor Sr. of Hannibal; six stepchildren, John Thomas Sears Sr. and Opal Jane Sears, both of Mason City; Darlene Ballard of Des Moines; George Pierson, Larry Pierson and Sandy Powell, all of Mason City.

Bill will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

MASON CITY — Robert “Bob” Ray Daseke, 51, of 1417 S. Carolina Ave., died Wednesday (July 7, 2004) at his home.

The family of Robert “Bob” Ray Daseke has requested that memorial contributions be directed to the family in his memory.

Robert Ray Daseke was born on Sept. 29, 1952, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Don and Eilene (Himes) Klenk. He attended elementary school in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Amana High School.

Bob also attended and graduated from Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids with an associate of arts degree in human service.

He attended Buena Vista College and would have graduated in December 2005 with a major in human services and a minor in psychology.

After completing his schooling, he worked in the field of chemical dependency for eight years in Cedar Rapids, Monticello, Prairie Ridge in Mason City and Fountain Center in Albert Lea, Minn.

Bob also worked at the Unitarian Church in Cedar Rapids from 1985 until 1994. The family moved to Mason City in 1998.

He was united in marriage to Linda Stoakes on Aug. 24, 1985, in Cedar Rapids.

He enjoyed gardening, fishing, working on computers, riding his jet ski and visiting with his many friends, but his great love and enjoyment was his family.

He was a member of A. A. in Mason City and will be greatly missed.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Linda Daseke of Mason City; a daughter, Meggan Daseke and her fiance, Jason Powell, of Mason City; his parents, Don “Gene” and Eilene Klenk of Middle Amana; two sisters, Pam Kelly and her husband, Mike, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Laurie Ballard and her husband, Bill, of Watkins, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law, Neta Stoakes of Clear Lake; sister-in-law, Kathy Stoakes of Des Moines; a brother-in-law, David Stoakes and his wife, Jackie, of Grinnell; an uncle, Terry Heims of Cedar Rapids; as well as other relatives and many friends.

EVELETH, Minn. — Raymond E. Walters, 64, of Eveleth, died Saturday (July 3, 2004) at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

Services were held in Eveleth. Inurnment will be in Mason City, with his parents.

He was born Dec. 1, 1939, in Mason City, to Tom and Hazel (Dull) Walters.

He was a Navy veteran and member of the U.S. Naval Academy of Music from 1957 to 1958.

Raymond was a longtime resident of Eveleth. He worked as a lineman for Minnesota Power, retiring in 1995.

He married Nancy Oertel on Oct. 5, 2000, in Mason City.

He was an active member of the Eveleth Masonic Lodge 239, having served as past master and was active with their Fourth of July committee. He was a member of American Legion Post 239 of Virginia; served on the Eveleth Fire Commission for several years; was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; and was a former member of Eveleth Elks Lodge 1161.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, IT2 Ray Jr. (Angela) Walters, of Norfolk, Va.; stepchildren, Rick Oertel, of Deetsville, Ala., Lori (Russ) Brown, of Rhinelander, Wis., Scott Oertel and Justin (Tracie Hepola) Oertel, both of Eveleth, and Teri (Mike) Kilpela, of Makinen, Minn.; two grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild; sisters, Sally (Charlie) Thrams, of Mason City, and Linda (Alva) Lubkeman, of Rockwell; and numerous nephews, nieces and good friends.

Fern Olive Rodruck was born May 8, 1902, at Chester, Iowa, the daughter of Levi Walter and Eva Carter (Roper) Bullis, and died on Tuesday (July 6, 2004) at the Sheffield Care Center.

At a young age her family moved to the Hazelton area and she graduated from Hazelton High School.

On March 15, 1921, Fern was united in marriage with Alva Leon Lahner in New Hampton. To this union five children were born. Alva died in 1940.

On April 15, 1942, Fern married Carl Emerson Rodruck in Cedar Rapids. Carl died in 1985.

Fern was a devoted wife and mother and for 24 years owned Rodruck Variety Store in Sheffield.

She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Sheffield and American Legion Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star, the White Shrine Auxiliary and Business Professional Women.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting and her vegetable and flower garden.

For many years Fern worked for the cancer drive.

Fern is survived by her two daughters, Eva (Richard) Roberts, of Garfield, Minn., and Edith (George) Kammrad, of Omaha, Ark.; stepdaughter, Kay VanVlack, of Rapid City, S.D.; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Fern is preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; three sons, LaVeryl, Beryl and Dale; one grandson, Doug Kammrad; one daughter-in-law, Doris Lahner; four brothers, Harry, Jerome, Chester and Grant; two sisters, Edna Gerken and Ruth Fuller.

Lori A. Milbrath was born on Nov. 22, 1961, the daughter of Dave and Marge Milbrath in Mason City. Lori attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1980.

She then enlisted in the United States Navy, where she served four years.

While in the Navy she was united in marriage to Jay P. Duncan in Beeville, Texas. To this union, two children were born, Kandace D. “Kandie” Duncan and Amber J. Duncan.

Following their honorable discharge from the Navy, they moved to Des Moines where they later divorced.

Lori and the children moved back to Mason City and she worked for Fieldstone Cabinet Co.

She loved her children so very much and spent as much time with them as she could. Lori also liked to bake and spend time with her friends and family.

She is survived by her parents, David and Marge Milbrath, of Mason City; brother, Robert Milbrath and wife, Connie, of Mason City; sister, Mary Buckley and husband, Darren, of Mason City; one niece and two nephews, Jadda, Brad and Brock; and several aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Leonard and Georgia Bates and her paternal grandparents, Arthur and Nellie Milbrath.

CLEAR LAKE — Mildred “Millie” Alice Harding, 92, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (July 8, 2004) at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Millie was born in Webster City, the daughter of Tom and Alice (Corn) Richey. She was a graduate of Manly High School in Manly. She then moved to Clear Lake and worked at the Surf Ballroom.

She eloped with Earl Harding to Owatonna, Minn., on March 22, 1936. In 1939, they moved to St. Paul, Minn., where she and her husband managed the Prom Ballroom. In 1942, they also managed the Terp Ballroom and the Surf.

In 1948, they purchased Dance Island in Wahoo, Neb. They moved back to Clear Lake in 1967, where Millie worked with her sister, Verna Ouverson in Verna’s Shoppe. Millie owned Verna’s Shoppe from 1987 until her retirement at age 80 in 1992.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards and going to the casino with old friends like Bill and LaVerne Hoy.

She loved having coffee with her “coffee buddies” every morning at her home and later at Oakwood Care Center.

Millie is survived by her daughter, Sharon Albers, of Clear Lake; son, Richard Harding and his, wife, Leanne, of Lincoln, Neb.; five grandchildren, Debbie Racine and her husband, Gene, of Pt. Townsend, Wash.; Steve McAllister, of Anchorage, Alaska; Jennifer Bartels, of Lincoln; Kimberly Kjeldgaard and her husband, Dan, of Omaha, Neb.; and Molly Hobbs and her husband, Wally, of Taiwan; seven great-grandchildren; special grandchildren, Jim and Denise Davis, of Clear Lake; special niece, Pat Ouverson, of Cedar Rapids; and many other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Earl in 1969; son-in-law, Gene Albers; grandson, Stan Bartels; three sisters, Verna Ouverson; Ruth Ulsted, and Pearl Brunsvold; and one brother, Jimmy Richey.

HAMPTON — Alvhild Marie Heuer, 88, of Hampton, died Tuesday (July 6, 2004) at Hampton Health Care Center.

Alvhild Marie was born on June 10, 1916, in Hatton, N.D.

Her parents were Adolph and Martha (Lenz) Garsjo. She attended a one-room country school for eight years and graduated from high school in Nashua, Mont.

At six weeks old she moved from Hatton, N.D., with her mother and two older siblings to Homestead on Ft. Peck Indian Reservation in Montana. Her father came a year later.

After school she worked at the Ft. Peck Dam, where she met her husband.

She was united in marriage to Willard Heuer on March 31, 1935, in Montana.

Her daughter, Marie, was born in 1937, and they moved to Iowa in 1938. She moved back to Montana from 1966 to 1968 to care for her elderly parents, returning to Iowa and lived in the Dows, Sheffield, and Hampton areas and worked as a waitress.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and fishing.

She is survived by three grandsons, Ronald Eric Hansen Jr. and his wife, Janice, of Sheffield, Steven Gaylord Hansen and his wife, Becky, of Casper, Wyo., and Lamont Willard Hansen, of Hansell; four great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Haley, Garth and Skye; and two brothers, Hartvig Garsjo, of Nashua, Mont. and Alfred Garsjo, of Vinton City, Wash.

She was preceded in death by parents; husband, Willard; a daughter, Marie Irene Heuer Hansen; a son-in-law, Ronald Erick Hansen Sr.; three brothers, Ernie, Marvin, and Victor Garsjo; and two sisters, Helga and Dagney.
