BEVERLY DIANE MARINER
MASON CITY — Beverly Diane Mariner, 63, of 1203
S. Rhode Island Ave., Mason City, died Tuesday
afternoon (June 29, 2004) at Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Friday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405
S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the
Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Interment will be
in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at
Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in
Mason City, with a Ladies of The Moose memorial
service at 6 p.m. There will be additional
visitation one hour prior to the service at the

Beverly was born on Oct. 15, 1940, to John and
Maxine (Skogen) Poole at Iowa City. She attended
school in Clear Lake.
On April 25, 1959, she was united in marriage to
Westley Mariner, whom she dearly loved the rest
of her life.
Bev loved life and moved through it with gusto.
She always wanted to have fun and shared it with
her family as she fished off the dock at their
trailer at Madison Lake.
She was happiest when they shared camping and
family functions. She made the best spaghetti
and for all the holidays, pumpkin pies.
When she was younger, she looked forward to
dancing and would often teach her kids and
grandkids the right footwork in her kitchen.
She kept her two friends “Comet” and “Bleach” at
hand as she cleaned everything including the dog
until it shined or was bright white. Over the
years her kitchen shrank about three inches as
the layers of fresh paint would build.
Her radio was always on as she listened to 50s
and real country and western songs.
She was a hard worker and made many friends and
socialized at the Moose Lodge where she was a
bartender and a member of the Ladies of the
Moose.
One of her favorite trips was to Hawaii where
she was amazed at the sea life when she went
snorkeling.
Beverly was not a stranger to risks as she
gambled and played the cherry machines. She was
strong willed in de-cision-making, but yet had a
loving and caring relationship with her children
and grandchildren who she would spoil just a
little bit. She was also their best friend.
Her parents were a big part of her life and
often played cards with them for hours.
Those thankful in sharing Bev’s life include her
five children, Dawn and husband, Todd Liekweg,
of Rockwell; Michelle and husband, Dan Wyborny,
sons, Jon and his wife, Sheryl, David and his
wife, Kim, and Rod and his wife, Jodi Mariner,
all of Mason City; her parents, John and Maxine
Poole, of Clear Lake; 15 grandchildren, Chelsey,
Casey, and Cheyenne Liekweg, Weston, Dalton and
Macy Jo Wyborny, Joseph, Kristin, Brittany,
Dylan, McKenzie, Jessica, Alex, Lucas and Erika
Mariner; and one brother, Ron and his wife,
Shirley Poole, of Clear Lake; and a host of
other relatives and friends.
Her husband Westley, the love of her life,
preceded her in death in 1997.

Ethington. He was a 1943 graduate of Rudd High
School.
Eldon served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during
World War II with the 4th Combat Cargo Group and
flew the “hump” from India into China and Burma.

schooling, he re-turned to Rudd and opened a
watch repair shop in the Ethington Drug Store at

projectionist at the Gem Theatre in 1956, and
then became the projectionist for the Charles
Theatre until the past couple of years. He also
was the projectionist at the 218 Drive-In
Theatre, Charles City, until its closing.

generations of Charles City residents will
remember him as the slightly built man at the
theatre with the bow tie.
Eldon’s favorite hobby was building scale model
lighter-than-air dirigibles, up to eight feet in
length and weighing about an ounce per foot. The
models, of his design, took up to six months to
build. He built intricate interior frameworks of
balsa wood, kite string, and thread, with a
lightweight vinyl out-er skin. He filled them
with helium or natural gas, and displayed them
throughout his home.
