MOURINE R. PALS


BELMOND — Mourine R. Pals, 94, of Belmond, died Wednesday (July 14, 2004) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Funeral service for Mourine R. Pals will be held at l0:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Belmond with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation for Mourine R. Pals will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane S. in Belmond, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

Mourine Ruth Lieuwen was born July 30, 1909, on the Lieuwen family farm in Avery Township, Hancock County. She was the seventh of 11 children born to Teeke Tjaard and Helen (Frey) Lieuwen. As a child, Mourine received her education in a neighborhood rural school.

Mourine married Joe Pals of Alexander, on Nov. 9, 1929, at the parsonage of the First Reformed Church in Meservey, Iowa.

During the years when Joe worked maintaining the roads of Wright County, the couple made their home in Belmond. Later, in 1947, they moved to the Lieuwen farm where they lived until retiring to their home in Belmond in 1974. Joe died in 1989.

A homemaker all her life, Mourine devoted her life to her family, and her home was always the focal point for many family gatherings.

She especially enjoyed New Year’s Day when her family would gather for the traditional Speck en Dicken.

Her grandchildren have many fond memories of times spent with her on the farm and later when she moved to town.

Mourine was an excellent cook. She enjoyed trying out new recipes and then giving them her own special touch.

She was also a skilled seamstress, and she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, canning, and reading, especially cookbooks.


Over the years, Mourine served countless cups of tea to her family and friends, along with tasty treats fresh from the oven.

She looked forward to company and was always prepared to serve them.

Her determination to conquer the adversities in her life was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Joe and Mourine were the parents of four children: Joan (James) Carroll of Osage; David (Marlys) of Cedar Falls; Carol (Roland) Lerdal of Berne, Ind.; and James of Britt. Mourine is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Susan Neuwohner, Leanne Ermer, Susan Gersema, Debra Cunningham, Teresa Pietsch, Laura Grimm, Lisa Smith, Tom Lerdal, Nicole Stoller and Joel Pals. She also has 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition, Mourine is survived by three sisters: Mabel (Clif) Evans of Clarion; Mary (Andy) Jasperson of Glendale, Calif.; and Margaret (Kenneth) Parker of Yucaipa, Calif.

Also surviving is a niece who made her home with the Lieuwens, Jean (Arnett) Ostendorf of Klemme; a sister-in-law Jennie (George) Lieuwen; and a brother-in-law, Peter (Gladys) Pals, both of Belmond.

Besides her parents and her husband, Mourine was preceded in death by three brothers: George, Bert, and Donald Lieuwen; and four sisters: Nellie (Hauko) Barkema, Grace (Hauko) Barkema, Rose (Ralph) Baker, and Helen (Gene) Kelley.

CAROL JANSSEN


ALLISON — Carol Janssen, 42, of Allison, was born Jan. 11, 1962, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Harold and Irene Sossaman Blum. She graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1980. Carol continued her education at Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls, earning an associate degree.

Carol was united in marriage with Brent Janssen on April 17, 1982, at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarks-ville. After marriage they made their home on their farms near Allison, where they live today. Carol’s first occupation was taking care of her family and home.

In 1997, she worked for MidCom in Waverly until it closed. Carol returned to college at Hamilton Business College in Cedar Falls, and earned an associate degree in business computers.

She currently worked at NIACC in Mason City as a help desk media technician, until her illness forced her to stop working.

Carol was a very active member of St. John Lutheran Church. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years, served on the Parish Education Committee, co- chaired the annual church Bar-B-Q, and helped with the children’s Christmas program.

Carol was a member of the Shell Rock Karate Club. She enjoyed computers and the Internet. She had her own Web site: www.inthemiddleofacornfield.com.

Carol liked collecting Longaburger Baskets and Precious Moments figurines. She also enjoyed creating scrapbooks.

Carol loved her pets. She cherished her family and loved her husband and children with all her heart.

Carol died Thursday (July 15, 2004) at Waverly Health Center in Waverly, from complications of a brain tumor.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harold Blum.

Carol is survived by her husband, Brent; and three children, Samantha, Robert and Christopher Janssen, all of Allison; her mother, Irene Blum, of Cedar Falls; two brothers, John Blum, of Iowa, and Bill Blum, of The Colony, Texas; one sister, Grace (Brad) Robinson, of Lincoln, Neb.; grandmother, Ethel McCombs, of Cedar Falls.

Funeral services for Carol Janssen, 42, of Allison, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church in Clarksville.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Clarksville.

ANNETTE SMITH


CHARLES CITY — Annette Smith, a resident of Charles City, died Thursday (July 15, 2004) at the Community Nursing Home in Clarksville.

Funeral service for Annette Smith will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, with the Rev. Charles Dorsey, pastor of St. John’s United Church of Christ Pleasant Hill, officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 1 p.m. until service time on Saturday.

Annette Lois Carroll Krumrey Smith was born Sept. 21, 1919, at Muskegon, Mich., the daughter of Zell and Mae (Hinkle) Carroll.

At the age of nine her family moved to Charles City, where she also attended the Charles City High School.

On June 8, 1937, she was united in marriage to Lawrence Krumrey. They farmed until his death on Dec. 12, 1971.

Annette married Willis Smith on July 11, 1975. Willis died on Dec. 1, 2003. Annette worked for several years with the hot lunch program at Charles City schools.

She was a member of the Moose Lodge and Double Dozen Club.

Her pastimes included sewing, crocheting, and playing solitaire.

Annette’s family was very special to her and she looked forward to spending time with them. The grandchildren will always remember how good a ballplayer grandma was and how hard she could hit the ball.

Living family members include a son, Robert (Kathy) Krumrey of Charles City; a daughter, Linda (Merlin) Litterer of Greene; a son-in-law, Harley Lovik of Sherill; four stepdaughters, Nancy (Don) Rosonke of Floyd, Barbara (Ron) Rice of Mason City, Janet (Bill) Vokes of Floyd, and April (Jeff) Rusch of Colorado; a stepson, Millard (Patty) Smith of Colorado; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ron Norton of Grand Rapids, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a daughter, Barbara Lovik; two sisters, Maxine Gifford and Betty Fisher; and a brother, Corneilus Carroll.

NEW HAMPTON — Beverly A. Ferch, 68, of New Hampton, died Wednesday (July 14, 2004) as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Castalia.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton. Burial will be in the New Hampton City Cemetery.

SWALEDALE — Jerry Richard Ward, 64, of Swale-dale, died Thursday (July 15, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a long battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Swaledale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Wittern and Mr. Red Haugland presiding. Burial will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Swaledale.

Loretta Adeline Powell was born Oct. 10, 1917, in Alta Vista, to Bernard J. and Mary E. (Paschelka) Reich. She was one of 12 children born to her parents. During her younger years, Loretta assisted various families with household chores.

On July 25, 1938, Loretta was united in marriage to Ernest E. Powell in Elma, Iowa. Throughout the years, the couple enjoyed spending special time together while going for car rides.

Loretta was an avid reader of a wide variety of publications and tended to many a vegetable and flower garden in her lifetime.

Some of her leisure activities and interests included canning her produce, solving book-type puzzles and traveling with her family to many vacation spots across the United States.

Loretta is described by her children as a strong-willed and loving woman with a great sense of humor. She was a devoted wife and nurturing mother who was graciously willing to assist anyone in any capacity.

Loretta’s family was of foremost importance to her and her children and grandchildren claim they never doubted her outpouring love, which she continuously exhibited.

Preparing for the holidays and having her family at home was a special and busy time. “Saturday morning coffee at Mom’s” will be a treasured memory for many. She found great pride and joy in anticipating the birth of a new family member and personally became acquainted by “rocking each baby.”

Loretta’s children recall that their mom made a special cake for expectant parents, a good luck charm for a healthy and uncomplicated birth. They speak fondly of and will greatly miss Loretta’s homemade chicken and biscuits, dill pickles, wilted lettuce, banana graham cracker pie and the “best homemade bread in the world!”

Loretta was devoted to her faith and a member of Beth-lehem Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Loretta will be missed dearly by family and friends who have shared her life.

She is survived by her children, Roger (Sandra) Powell of Mason City; Sharon (Fred) King of Charles City; Patricia Powell of Mason City; Sandra (Kurt) Spencer of Nora Springs; Mary (Dan) Blair of Nora Springs; Jane (Lee) Ritzert of Kensett and Judy Reich of Manly.

She will also be sadly miss-ed by her daughter-in-law, Margaret Powell of Mason City; her four sisters-in-law, Bonnie Reich of Mason City, Opal Peters of LeRoy, Minn., Pearl Reich of St. Paul, Minn. and May Day of Lancaster, Wis.; her 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; many special nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Loretta in death are her husband, Ernest E. Powell in April of 1973; her parents, Bernard and Mary Reich; four sisters; seven brothers and her great-grandson, Nickolas Rowe.

MARY MARGARET FRIEDMAN


CLEAR LAKE — Mary Margaret “Peggy” Senneff Friedman, of 3930 Grand Ave. in Des Moines and 607 S. Shore Drive in Clear Lake, died in Mason City, Iowa, on her 90th birthday.

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Senneff and was born on July 15, 1914. She was born and raised in Mason City and Clear Lake.

In 1937 she married Wright C. Percival and moved to Des Moines, where she has maintained her home.

She is survived by her children, the Rev. Michael Percival (Constance) of Westcliffe, Colo., Patsy Shors (John) of Des Moines, Dr. Mary Brennan of Las Vegas, Nev., Jean Prior (Charles) of Asheville, N.C., and Peter Percival of Des Moines. Her stepchildren include William Friedman Jr. of Des Moines, Dr. Sidney Friedman of Boston, Mass., and Miriam Schwab of Des Moines. She is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Peggy attended St. Mary of the Woods College and graduated from the University of Iowa. She did post-graduate work at the American Academy of Dramatic Art in New York City.

She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society and the Fifty Plus Club of St. Augustin Church. She was a charter member of the St. Augustin Parish Council, a life member and past president of Mercy Hospital Guild, a life member of Bishop Drumm Home, a life member of Blank Hospital Guild, a life member of Catholic Women’s League, a life member of St. Mary of the Woods Alumni Association and a life member of the University of Iowa Foundation.

Peggy was active in Girl and Boy Scouts, YWCA, the Des Moines Art Center, the Iowa Radio Reading and Information Service (IRIS), the Des Moines Ballet, Proteus Club and the Clear Lake Arts Council. She was a past president of the Des Moines Playhouse and the Junior League of Des Moines. She served on the Guthrie Theatre Board in Minneapolis as the Iowa representative for many years. She was a member of the Des Moines and Embassy Clubs.

Peggy loved her family and giving to her communities, both in Des Moines and Clear Lake. Her wonderful sense of humor, loving spirit and happy outlook on life endear-ed her to many. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and dear friend.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Dunn���s Funeral Home, 2121 Grand Ave. in Des Moines, where a vigil will be held at 6 p.m.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Augustin Church. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

SWALEDALE — Jerry R. Ward, 64, of Swaledale died Thursday (July 15, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a long battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Swaledale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Wittern and Mr. Red Haugland presiding. Interment will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Swaledale.

Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church.

Jerry Richard Ward was born March 8, 1940, in Swaledale, the son of Virgil and Ruby (Dyer) Ward. He attended and graduated from Swaledale High School in 1959, where he played baseball.

Jerry had always worked for area farmers and for 25 years worked for Jim Quinlan. He also did mowing and trimming for his neighbors until three years ago when his health prevented him from working.

Jerry spent a short time at the Rockwell Care Center and recently at the Sheffield Care Center.

He had attended Swaledale United Methodist Church.

Jerry always attended and enjoyed Rockwell-Swaledale basketball games and dancing at the Surf. He enjoyed going to farm auctions.

Jerry is survived by his sister, Janice Ward of Rockwell, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and a whole host of friends.

And he is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

BROOKFIELD, Wis. — Donald Rholl, 82, of Brookfield died Thursday (July 15, 2004). Donald was born Dec. 29, 1921, in Fertile, Iowa.

He was raised in Mason City, graduating from Mason City High School in 1939.

He is the beloved husband of Virginia (nee Sullivan). He is further survived by four children, one grandchild, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

NORTHWOOD — O. Marie Peterson, 74, of 504 8th St. N., Northwood, died Friday (July 16, 2004) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Conner Colonial Chapel in Northwood, and continue one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church. Family suggests memorials to O. Marie Peterson Memorial Fund.

Marie was born Nov. 15, 1929, in rural Radcliffe, the daughter of Clarence and Clara Amanda (Roe) Handeland.

Marie went to country school near Radcliffe, attended Carpenter High School and graduated from Northwood High School in 1948.

She married Merlin E. Peterson on March 5, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived on the Peterson family farm east of Northwood. They moved to Northwood in 1975.

Marie worked at the Carroll George factory in Northwood for 11 years. In 1976, she began working at the Lutheran Retirement Home, where she worked for 29 years.

Marie had the ability to laugh at herself. She was known for being a great caregiver and helping other people. She enjoyed quilting, traveling, listening to bluegrass music, gospel music and especially being with her children and grandchildren. She was a member of First Lutheran Church.

Marie will be sadly missed by her three children, David Peterson and his wife, Joan, Northwood, Sharon Gurtz and her husband, Marty, Reston, Va., and Karen Craft and her husband, Randy, Lander, Wyo.; seven grandchildren Kevin Peterson and his wife Mary, Joice, Amanda Peterson, Northwood, Micah Peterson and his wife, Heather, Owatonna, Minn., Nathan Peterson, Northwood; Ryan Gurtz and Laura Gurtz, both of Reston, Va., and Amber Craft, Lander, Wyo.; one brother, Donald Handeland, Mountain Home, Ark.; her sister, Clarice Leraaen, Charles City; and daughter-in-law, Linda Peterson Ward, Lake Mills.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Dennis; stepfather, Jon Farland and one brother, Orlan Handeland.

KENSETT — Richard David Julseth, 68, of 1197 410th St., Kensett, died Saturday (July 17, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Elk Creek Lutheran Church, Kensett, with the Rev. Allan J. Stoa officiating. Interment will be in Elk Creek Cemetery, Kensett. Military honors will be by Our Buddies VFW Post No. 6779, of Northwood.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Conner Colonial Chapel, Northwood, and one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church. Family suggests memorials to the Richard David Julseth Memorial Fund.

Richard David was born Sept. 16, 1935, in Mason City, the son of C.A. and Minnie (Brunsvold) Julseth. He graduated from Kensett High School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1954-1958.

He married Lois Tietz on Dec. 26, 1955, at the E.R. Church in Manly

Following the service he worked for Floyd Skellenger as a carpenter. He then worked road construction and later was employed at Deluxe in Lake Mills. He worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation, then the Worth County Secondary Road Department, retiring in 1998. He was custodian at Elk Creek Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed fishing, working on the farm and especially spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Elk Creek Lutheran Church.

Richard David will be sadly missed by his wife, Lois, Kensett; two children, Peter Julseth, Kensett, and Nancy Pasztor and her husband, Steve, of Allen, Texas; two grandchildren, Nathaniel and Denton Julseth, Kensett; one sister, Thelma Gaarder and her husband, Hoyt, of Sibley, Iowa; two brothers, Truman Julseth and his wife, Lorraine, and Connie Julseth, both of Northwood; and sister-in-law, Neva Julseth, Northwood.

Charlotte Irene Ziesmer, the daughter of John and Rose (Massey) Kelly, was born Feb. 19, 1916, in Britt. She attended school in Britt, where she graduated from high school in 1933. She continued her education for one year at Britt Junior College and then taught in the rural schools of Hancock County for the next 12 years.

She was married to Everett McCoy in 1936. To this union a daughter, Jeanette, was born. In 1942, she was married to LeRoy Busch, and to this union a son, Tom, was born.

Charlotte continued her teaching career as an elementary teacher in Garner until retiring in 1981. On Aug. 19, 1976, she was married to Stanley E. Ziesmer in Missouri. She enjoyed her family and traveling.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rosary Society and CD of A.

Charlotte is survived by her son, Tom Busch and wife, Diane, of Cedar Rapids; and two grandsons, Robert Busch and wife, Angela, and their two children, Alexis and Austin of Cedar Rapids, and Tom Busch and wife, Meg, of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stan, on Feb. 21, 2000; her daughter, Jeanette Bartell, on Sept. 30, 1981; her parents; a sister, Gertrude McCormick; and a brother, John Kelly.

Gladys Wilma (Peterson) Anderson was born on April 5, 1921, in Faribault County, Minn., to parents Peter T. and Mae (Thompson) Peterson. She attended country schools.

On Jan. 5, 1939, Gladys was united in marriage with Earnest H. Anderson in Scarville. The couple farmed in the Leland area. Earnest passed away on Aug. 31, 1966, in Shakopee, Minn. Gladys remained in the Leland area for more than 40 years, where she held various jobs in both Leland and Forest City.

Gladys was a member of West Prairie Lutheran Church, where she was active in the church circle prior to her illness progressing.

Survivors include her friend and loving companion, Dale Zingg of Leland; children, Kenneth Anderson of Braham, Minn., Helen Peterson and her husband, Curt, of Montrose, Minn., Sharon Oulman and her husband, James, of Forest City, Rodney Anderson of Forest City, and Douglas Anderson of Houston, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a sister, Donna Schobert and her husband, Harry, of Albert Lea, Minn.; six sisters-in-law, Betty Peterson of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Marcella Peterson of Charles City, Thelma Leegaard of Hoffman, Minn., Anna Branstad of Lake Mills, Alica Christian of Foley, Ala., and Ora Hofbauer of Dike; and many nieces and nephews.

BRITT — Robert D. Bravick, 77, of Britt, passed away Saturday (July 17, 2004) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services for Robert Bravick will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Britt with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. The Britt Ceremonial Unit will provide military graveside honors.

Robert, the son of Silas and Emily J. Bell Bravick, was born May 8, 1927, in Thompson. The family moved to the Britt area in 1933. Bob was educated in the Britt Community School.

Bob served his country in the United States Navy from 1945 until 1946. While in the Navy, Bob was stationed aboard the USS Nicholson Destroyer.

Following his discharge from the Navy, Bob was employed at Fairmont Foods from 1946 to 1950.

Bob was united in marriage with Jeanette Johns at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on March 13, 1948. The couple made their home in Britt, where they raised their family.

Bob was employed at the Britt Creamery (1950-1964), Britt Co-op Gas Company (1964-1966), and the United States Postal Service (1966-1990).

Bob and Jeanette enjoyed spending their winters in Weslaco, Texas.

His hobbies included visiting, woodworking, fishing and playing shuffle board and cribbage.

Bob was a member of the Britt United Methodist Church.

He was also a 40-year member of the Britt Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Britt American Legion and the Hancock County Historical Society.

Bob is survived by his wife, Jeanette, of Britt; one daughter, Rebecca Newton and her husband, Don, of Clear Lake, their family: Rachel and Corey Vespestad and Talia and Sidra of Huxley, and Andy and Jessica Newton of Ankeny; and one son, David Bravick and his wife, Jane, of Iowa City.

Ellen enjoyed crocheting afghans, cooking and baking. Her family fondly remembers when Ellen would bake pies.

Ellen is survived by her husband of 54 years, Wallace (Wally) of Belmond; a daughter, LaNae Walrod and husband, Michael, of Latimer; a son, Clarence of Holmes; a daughter-in-law, Lelani Johnston of Goodell; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Don Suntken and wife, Marlene, of Belmond.

She had been a co-owner and beautician for over 20 years at the Pizzazz Beauty Salon, and styled many ladies who became her friends during her many years of service.

Mary is survived by her two daughters, Mary Jean Strike and her husband, Gordon, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Sherry Houston and her husband, OJ, of Mason City. Also surviving is one sister, Patricia Petro of Mason City; six grandchildren, Chad Strike and his wife, Joanna, of Arkansas, Nick Chapel, Brett Strike and Samantha Strike, all of Colorado Springs, Colo., Shaundrea Houston and OJ Houston Jr., both of Mason City; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

CHARLES CITY — Ethel W. Brown, 92, of Charles City died Saturday (July 17, 2004) at Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein.

Funeral services celebrating Ethel’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee St. in Charles City. Burial will be at Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

Ethel was born Feb. 11, 1912, the daughter of Julius and Nina (Cummings) Heinmiller, of East Lincoln Township, Howard County, Iowa. Ethel grew up on the farm in East Lincoln Township.

Ms. Heinmiller married Ralph Demro of Nashua. To this union, two children were born, Dorothy Mae and Betty Ann. Ralph and Ethel later divorced.

Ethel married Otto F. Brown in October of 1949 at the Lutheran Church Parsonage in Charles City. To this union one son, Edward Charles, was born. They resided in Charles City.

Ethel worked as a waitress in Nashua. Ethel and her daughters moved to Charles City in 1943, when Ethel went to work for Oliver. Ethel worked for Oliver/White for 34 years, retiring in 1977.

She was a proud member of the AFL-CIO. She raised all three of her children in a union environment.

Ethel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to cook, bake and garden.

Her family will always cherish the memory of her generosity and sense of humor.

The love and special care of her niece, Lois Wright, allowed Ethel to stay in her home and live independently for many years.

Those left to celebrate the life and love of Ethel include: one daughter, Betty Kellogg, of Oelwein; one son, Edward Brown of Overland Park, Kan.; four grandchildren, Debra (Randy) Rummel of Oelwein, Denise (David) Green of Waterloo, Damon (Linda) Kellogg of Oceanside, Calif., and Dana (Shelly) Kellogg of Central City, Iowa; 10 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; two brothers-in-law, Frank Bronsema of Branson, Mo., and Robert Cooper of Sumner, Iowa; many nieces and nephews. And also Marilyn Jacobs of Kansas City, Mo., will cherish 28 years of memories.

Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Brown in 1995; daughter, Dorothy, in 1955; son-in-law, Lynn Kellogg; her parents; and seven sisters, Eva (Leo) Clement, Leona (Leonard) Morey, Alice (Albert) Boerschel, Dorothy (Francis) Teeple, Ruth (Edward) Cunningham, Thelma Bronsema, and Pearl Cooper; and one brother, Julius “Bud” (Marie) Heinmiller.

Geraldine Stokke was born Sept. 14, 1927, in Fertile, to Leo and Hazel (Haugen) Stokke. She grew up in Fertile and graduated from Fertile High School in 1946.

On June 6, 1948, Geraldine was united in marriage with Raymond McArthur. They moved to Pickstown, S.D., for a time, then to Grand Forks, N.D., Sacramento, Calif., and Riverdale, N.D., for one year each. They moved to Pierre in 1958 and have resided there since.

Geraldine was a Life Member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and served as an officer many times. She was also a charter member of the Canvasbacks Art Club.

Through her sorority, Geraldine was instrumental in starting a kidney dialysis unit in Pierre.

Geraldine is survived by her husband, Raymond, of Pierre; one son, Steve of Gillette, Wyo.; four grandchildren, Rachel Ogeltree of Rapid City, Levi, Jordan and Sara McArthur, all of Gillette, Wyo.; one great-granddaughter, Madison Carter; two sisters, Harriet Winden and her husband, Richard, of Hanlontown, and Silence Johnson of Fertile; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
