DARYL EMERSON MCCREADY

BOLAN — Daryl Emerson McCready, 75, passed away at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, Thursday, (July 8, 2004) on his daughter’s birthday.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton, with Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Burial will be in the Grafton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.

Daryl was born April 18, 1929, to Anna (Thon) and Blair McCready. He attended school in Plymouth for 11 years and graduated from Kensett High School in 1947, where he faithfully attended his reunions.

He married Joyce Bork at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, on Nov. 27, 1949, and moved to their 80-acre homestead in Bolan, which became a centennial farm of which he was proud of. He made many improvements and was happy to live to see the new grove he planted and cared for. Daryl farmed with his father and brother until renting their land out in later years.

His pride and joy were his seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, feeling very blessed to have them. They felt the same about Grandpa.

In past years he enjoyed restoring old gas engines and ’57 Chevys, and making ornamental antique lawn decorations. He and Joyce collected glassware, sugar shakers, cruets and loved the thrill of the hunt. His passion was riding his Honda Gold Wing which he rode more miles in a year than the car. (Quite a feat in his golden years.) It earned him the name Go-Go by his son and made him the envy of his son-in-law and sidekick on their many road trips. The last trip being as recent as a week ago, which was a trip to the Black Hills and surrounding area.

He enjoyed sharing his garden produce with others, probably giving away more than he kept for themselves. He had a love of compiling his family history in photo albums and writing captions to leave for future generations.

He was politically correct to say the least in his constant striving to better this fair land. He wrote many letters to the editor and say “It needed saying.” Their beautiful yard was almost a full-time job in itself. His claim to fame was the whole town of Bolan appearing on the “David Letterman Show” in 1989.

He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Grafton and he designed his own tombstone in awaiting anticipation of his heavenly home. Daryl had that special way of meeting and greeting one and all. A true people person through and through. He will be making friends in heaven.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of 54 years; three children, Cheryl (husband John) Thompson of Urbandale, David (wife Tammie) of Mason City, and Steve at home; granddaughters (twins) Jennifer Thelen (Rob) and Michelle Brunk (Andy), Angie Thompson and Shannon Thompson and Jessie McCready; and grandsons, Jamie and Jeramie McCready; great granddaughters, Bryant and Miranda Thelen; and great-grandson, Sterling Brunk.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Blair McCready; his brother, Don; his father and mother-in-law, Ed and Hattie Bork; and daughter-in-law, Kathie McCready.

Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, is in charge of arrangements, (641) 713-4920.

HAZEL MILLOY WILSON

MASON CITY — Hazel (Milloy) Wilson, 84, formerly of Marble Rock, died Saturday (July 10, 2004) at Heritage Care Center, 501 S. Kentucky Ave., Mason City, where she had been a resident and patient since October 2002.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Those wishing to extend memorials to honor Hazel may direct them to Hospice of North Iowa.

Hazel was born on Sept. 24, 1919, at the Milloy family farm west of Rockford. She was the third daughter of William and Bernice (Kivell) Milloy. Hazel attended country school at the brick schoolhouse west of Rockford near her home. In 1938, she graduated from Rockford High School.

Like many farm girls of the period, Hazel was active in helping out with the farm work which included milking cows. She participated in 4-H activities, county fairs, etc. Following her graduation Hazel attended La James College and became a licensed beautician and worked in that field. On Aug. 23, 1940, Hazel became the bride of Harley E. Wilson, who also was a Rockford native, in a ceremony at Kensett. For a time the couple made their home in Rockford. When World War II began and Harley entered military service, Hazel went with him to California. It was there she became a typical “Rosie the Riveter,” working at aircraft factories in the war effort. When Harley returned from the Army he joined the Osco Drug Co. in Mason City, where they lived until promotions caused the Wilsons to move to Illinois. Due to advancements with Harley’s Osco Drug career the couple lived in several different cities including Rockford, Kankakee, Joliet and Momence. Throughout their 35 years together Hazel was a solid partner and best friend to Harley. They had no children and she devoted her full time and attention to her husband, Harley. Hazel was a great homemaker. She was a gardener and an avid reader. She kept up with local politics and liked watching all sports on TV, especially Chicago Cubs baseball in the Willie Mayes era. Harley died in 1975, and Hazel sold their home in Momence and moved back to Iowa and made her home at Marble Rock. In 1987, Hazel suffered a severe stroke which left her with no speech and substantial paralysis. For 15 years she made her home with her eldest sister, Irene Vorhes of Marble Rock. Despite the handicap Hazel enjoyed life and contacts with relatives and friends. She especially enjoyed little children. When her health deteriorated, Hazel entered the Heritage Care Center in October 2002, where she passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2004.

Hazel is survived by four sisters; Irene Vorhes of Marble Rock, Marian Graves of Kansas City, Louise Moore of Mason City, and Joyce Dow of rural Rockford; also surviving are 14 nieces and nephews, two sisters-in-law; Mrs. Robert (Marlys) Lohr and Lorraine Milloy, both of Rockford, and many friends, all of whom will have many good memories from having known Hazel.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Bernice and William Milloy; a sister, Jeanette Dyrcz and her only brother, Calvin Milloy.

RUTH IONE HEMMES

HAMPTON — Ruth Ione Hemmes, 88, died Saturday (July 10, 2004) at the Hampton Care Center in Hampton of natural causes.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Zion Reformed Church in rural Sheffield, with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will be in Zion Reformed Church Cemetery in rural Sheffield.

Visitation will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

Ruth was born on Feb. 11, 1916, in Alexander, the daughter of George and Margaret (Gerdes) Blau. She attended Franklin County schools. On Sept. 4, 1935, Ruth married Tobias Hemmes on the family farm.

Ruth was a homemaker and loved baking and cooking, particularly cinnamon rolls, fresh bread and pies. Nobody could whip the meringue any higher! With fresh baked goods always at hand, she was the perfect hostess, and often had friends, neighbors, kids, and grandkids popping in for a “quick” game of canasta with coffee, tea, and treats.

While friends, cards, flowers and gardening all found ways to occupy Ruth’s time, it was her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids that brought her ultimate joy! She lovingly crocheted afghans for all the grandkids and baby blankets for great-grandchildren for as long as she was able to do so.

She was a proud and faithful member of Zion Reformed Church for more than 50 years, and was active in many church groups, ladies JOY fellowship and RCW. Her work in the church wasn’t work at all, because her greatest fulfillment was in helping others and spreading God’s love. She always assured anyone who parted her company, “Go with God, and He will go with you!,” and you couldn’t help but smile when she offered a wave and her patent farewell directive, “Be Happy!”

Ruth is survived by her daughters, Marlys J. Pralle-Hirth and her husband, Ron Hirth, of Ankeny, Judy A. McCarville and her husband, John, of Newton, Janet Atkinson of Hampton and her special friend, Ken Brakke; a sister, Eva Faye Littzen of Fort Dodge; a brother, Marvin G. Blau of Latimer; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren.

Preceding Ruth in death were her parents; husband, Tobias; infant grandson, Jeffrey McCarville, brother Edward Blau; and sister, Esther Koenen.

LOWELL “BUD” KOCI

Heaven got lucky on 7/11, as a good man passed through its golden gates. Lowell H. “Bud” Koci died July 11, 2004 at the age of 83 years, 2 months and 15 days. According to his wishes, his body has been donated to the University of Iowa for medical study and research. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, July 17, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 428 West Walnut Street, Manly, Iowa with Rev. Randy Nielsen officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the services. The Edward Tosel American Legion Post #110 will conduct military rites. Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring Street, Manly is in charge of the arrangements.

The family requests that memorials be given to those organizations that Bud supported throughout his life such as the: American Red Cross, Salvation Army, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Hospice of North Iowa, or the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Manly.

Lowell H. “Bud” Koci was born on April 26, 1921 on the family farm west of Grafton, Union Township, Iowa to John and Laura (Prell) Koci. He attended Grafton School where he lettered in sports, graduating in 1939. He attended Iowa State University prior to enlisting in the United States Marine Corps on September 7, 1942. He received his basic training at the Marine Corps Training Depot in San Diego and served his country honorably fighting in the Battle of Tarawa. He was awarded a Purple Heart for Meritorious Service.

While on leave he married his all time sweetheart, Shirley Jeanne Ciner on September 19, 1944 at the old Lutheran Church in Manly, Iowa. While Bud was still in the service, the newlyweds were stationed in Hastings, Nebraska and San Diego, California. Following his honorable discharge in September of 1945, the couple returned to their home community, the Manly area. Bud began what was to become a life long career with Peoples Gas & Electric, which later became Interstate Power Company. His career spanned 37 years and included both gas and electrical work in the Manly area and culminated with his position as Area Manager of the Nora Springs office. Bud retired in March of 1983.

A true people person, Bud gave of himself freely and whole-heartedly. Organizations that benefited from his participation included the Manly Pioneer Town & Country Club, the Manly Retirement Apartment Board of Directors, the North Central School Board, Manly Jaycees, Manly Volunteer Fire Department, and the Manly Senior Citizens Taxi Service. On more than one occasion he even played Santa to the local children during the American Legion holiday celebration. He was recently honored by the Edward Tosel American Legion Post # 110 for being a member in good standing continuously for the period of 60 years. Over the years Bud bowled in numerous leagues throughout the area and participated in numerous card clubs. Bud loved to fish and for the past 25 plus years enjoyed twice yearly fishing trips to Canada. He also loved to hunt and golf and on a particularly good day on the greens he would come home with a turtle. Bud was well known for his ability to catch and cook turtles and he loved to host large “turtle feeds.” Anyone who ever ate from his table could attest to what a fine chef he was. Both vegetables and flowers did well in Buds many gardens. He enjoyed nature and in later years, took much enjoyment in bird watching.

Bud loved his family most of all. While growing up his two daughters, Jeanie and Ann could always count on their Dad to be a tower of unconditional love and support, as well as a source of much merriment. Bud delighted his girls with car ride sing alongs, winter picnics, massive candy making marathons, bag swings, adventurous vacations, evening fires and moon gazing.

When his girls married Bud heartily welcomed his sons-in-law into his family and found endless joy and delight in his five grandchildren and one great grandson.

Left to mourn his passing and to cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years, 9 months, 22 days Shirley J. Koci, his two daughters, Jean Marie and her husband Roy Arends of Alexander, Iowa, and Ann Jeanette and her husband Michael “Mick” Burkart of Cincinnati, Ohio, his five grandchildren, Kelly Lynn and her husband Joe Pratt of Urbandale, Iowa, Matthew Lowell Burkart of Chicago. Illinois, Jill Michelle Burkart of Austin, Texas, Andrew Joseph Arends of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Johnathan Charles Arends of Kansas City, Kansas. Nicholas Lowell Pratt of Urbandale is the beloved great grandson. Also surviving are his sister, Pearl Urbatsch, a nephew Harley Urbatsch II and niece, Sue Urbatsch all of Forest City and his special fishing buddy George “Andy” Anderson of Nora Springs, Iowa.

Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Laura (Prell) Koci and his brother-in-law Harley Urbatsch.
