VICTOR M. TIEDEMAN

MASON CITY — Victor M. Tiedeman, 89, of 1037 19th St. S.W., died Friday (Sept. 19, 2003) at the I.O.O.F. Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before services Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the Victor M. Tiedeman Memorial Fund.

Victor was born Jan. 8, 1914, in Chaska, Minn., the son of William and Rose (Paschka) Tiedeman.

He began working part-time for American Crystal Sugar Company in 1929, then full-time in 1938, working there until his retirement in 1976.

He married Ruth McKee in 1938 in Mason City.


Victor was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, en-joyed fishing, cribbage, and the Twins and Vikings.

He is survived by his son, Dennis Tiedeman and his wife, Sharon, of Mason City; grandchildren, Lori Ellingson and her husband, Mark, of Mason City, and Steve Tiedeman and his wife, Lisa, of Mason City; two great-grandchildren, Chelsea Ellingson and Laurel Tiedeman; and several nieces and nephews.

Victor was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers and three sisters.

MARJORIE L. KUNDERT


MASON CITY — Marjorie L. “Marge” Kundert, 91, of 17396 Kingbird Avenue, died Saturday (Sept. 20, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, with the Rev. James M. Magelssen officiating. Her body was donated to the University of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines.

Interment will take place in Concordia Cemetery, rural Joice, at a later date.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue.

Memorials may be given to the Marjorie L. Kundert Memorial Fund.

FOREST CITY — George Arald Riekens Sr., 86, of Forest City died Friday (Sept. 19, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Forest City with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

ALGONA — Barbara Lowman, 91, of Algona, died Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Algona.

DUMONT — Iris J. Alitz, 79, of Dumont died Saturday (Sept. 20, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Aredale United Methodist Church in Aredale, with the Rev. Terra Amundson and the Rev. Chuck Wallace officiating. Burial will be in Oak Wood Cemetery in Plymouth.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont.

Memorials may be given in memory of Iris J. Alitz in care of Mark Alitz, 3394 Saratoga Ct., Mason City, Iowa 50401.

Iris J. Alitz was born Aug. 23, 1924, in Dumont, to Carl Stock and Hazel Miller. She graduated from Dumont High School.

Iris married Milton Bud Alitz on Sept. 2, 1950, in Aredale.

She worked at Sears in interior decorating, then moved to Davenport and owned a Country Kitchen. Iris later moved to Hampton to work at the Hampton Nursing Home and to take care of her family.

She was a member of the Aredale United Methodist Church.

She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Legion Post# 360 in Dumont.

She enjoyed gardening, and taking care of and spending time with her family. She especially had a close relationship with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons, Mark and his wife, Lori, of Mason City, and Steven and his wife, Evette, of Phoenix, Ariz; brother, Dale Stock and his wife, Claire, of Dumont; granddaughters, Sarah and Holly Alitz, both of Phoenix, Ariz., and Autumn Alitz, of Mason City; and grandson, Dylan “Bud” Alitz of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

MARIE S. FRELUND-PFEIL


MASON CITY — Marie S. Frelund-Pfeil, 91, of 501 S. Kentucky, died Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2003) at the Heritage Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 120 1st St. N.E., with Rt. Rev. Alan Scarfe, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa, and Rev. John “Jack” Gannett, St. John’s Episcopal Church, co-celebrants. Inurnment will be in the St. John’s Episcopal Church Columbarium.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue.

Memorials may be given to St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Marie was born Nov. 11, 1911, in Albert Lea, Minn., the daughter of Charles S. and Minnie L. (Ross) Rankin. She graduated from Mason City High School and attended Mason City Junior College.

Marie married Andrew Frelund and would later marry Osborn A. “Steve” Pfeil on April 5, 1990, in Mason City.

Marie worked as a supervisor for Sperry Hutchison, S & H Green Stamp Company, for 25 years in Des Moines, Chicago and Mason City. She retired in 1976 and returned to Mason City.

Following her marriage to Steve in 1990, she moved to Owatonna, returning to Mason City in 1994.

Marie was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, St. Mary’s Guild and PEO Chapter IW.

Marie will be remembered by many for her caring acts of kindness. For many years, Marie enjoyed providing homemade baked goods for her church to deliver to shut-in members. She also volunteered her time at the MacNider Art Museum, where in addition to volunteering she was able to expand her personal interest in making pottery and art.

Trips to Alaska, Hawaii and New Mexico were highlights in her travels.

Marie thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always celebrating their accomplishments and achievements.

Her memory will be cherished by many friends and family members.

Marie is survived by two sons, Charles A. Frelund and his wife, Sandra, of Owatonna, Minn., and Warren F. Frelund and his wife, Sue, of Mason City; step-children, Sharon West and her husband, Harvey, of Owatonna, Minn., and Terry K. Pfeil and his wife, Gayle, of Chandler, Ariz.; grandchildren, Jeanne Cornick and her husband, Jim, Liz Croston and her husband, Jeff, Molly Anderegg and her husband, Mike, Tony Frelund, Jessica Frelund, Judd Frelund, and Jon Frelund; step-grandchildren, Monte Ballejos and Raquel Tello, Elfego Ballejos and Kelly Camden; five great-grandchildren, Nicholas Croston, Jenna Cornick, Patrick Anderegg, Emily Croston and Emma Anderegg; step-great-grandchildren, Isabella Tello-Ballejos and Aristeo Camden-Ballejos; and several nieces and nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; first and second husbands; brother, Charles S. Rankin Jr.; sisters, Viola Pierce, Lillian Hanson and Marjorie Cole; and granddaughter, Cathy Frelund.

ELIZABETH ‘BETTY’ JANE HANES JACKLEY DUNN


MESA, Ariz. — Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Hanes Jackley Dunn, 78, died Friday (Aug. 15, 2003) in Mesa, Ariz.

Funeral services were held at the Church of the Masters, 6659 E. University in Mesa, Ariz.

A memorial service for Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Hanes Jackley Dunn will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Drive in Mason City, with the Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore officiating.

Elizabeth was born Christmas Eve 1925 at Park Hospital in Mason City, the daughter of Joel Fairman Hanes and Helen Atwood (Wells) Hanes, just minutes before midnight.

Betty attended Mason City schools and graduated in the class of 1943. She attended Mason City Junior College and graduated in 1945.

Betty started working for Northwestern Bell as a telephone operator and worked her way up to PBX supervisor.

Betty married Vern Francis Jackley in 1949. From this union two children were born: Jane Elizabeth in 1950 and Helen Frances in 1952. Vern passed away in 1965.

In 1967 Betty married Richard Harry Dunn and adopted his three children, Larry, Thomas and MaryJayne. They raised their two families as one.

Betty was considered “Mom” to all the kids in the extended neighborhood. The “funny farm,” as she fondly referred to it, always had room for more.

She involved the “kids” in all kinds of activities, whether it was playing games and cards, or making veggie stew or apple crisp, for which there was always ice cream. “Mom” always had time to listen to the kids’ stories and problems.

Betty’s childhood activities included being a Girl Scout and class spelldown champ. She took great pride and excelled in math.

Adult activities included being a Girl Scout leader, a 50-year member of Eastern Star, former member of First Presbyterian Church (Mason City), and a current member in the Church of the Master Presbyterian Church (Mesa), where she enjoyed singing in the choir.

Betty was well known for her skills as a seamstress, sewing for herself, family and friends. She was especially proud of her girls’ “dance costumes” which were always sewn to perfection.

Betty will probably be re-membered best by her classmates for her role as class of ’43 correspondent and newsperson. In later years she and Dick were well known for their efforts in organizing the Mason City breakfasts in Arizona.

Her children, Jane (Doug) Angell, Helen Jackley, Larry (Lisa Holland) Dunn, Tom (Rita) Dunn and MaryJayne Schmidt survive Elizabeth.

Grandchildren Joshua Morse, Nathan (Victoria) Morse, Bradly Angell, Allison Angell, Tyler Dunn, Tucker Dunn, Zachary Holland-Dunn, Parker Holland-Dunn, Meredith Dunn, Gabriel Dunn, Jillian Dunn, Ann Schmidt, Haley Dunn, Dakota Lewis; and her great-grandchildren, Griffin Morse and Mia Angell, survive her.

She is also survived by her siblings, Joel (Joyce) Hanes, Mason City, Edward (Billie) Hanes, Clear Lake, Dorothy Stone, Wisconsin, and Barbara Roberts, Illinois.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents and husbands, Vern Jackley (1965) and Richard Dunn (2001); and grandson, Alex-ander Dunn (1996).

LAURA KAY PAYTON


THORNTON — Laura Payton died Friday morning (Sept. 19, 2003) at her home in Thornton at the age of 16.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Meservey-Thornton School in Thornton with the Rev. Dan Voss officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton.

Visitation will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Thornton.

Arrangements are being handled by the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home of Thornton.

Laura Kay Payton was born Aug. 10, 1987, in Mason City, the daughter of Ronald and Nancy (Muhlenbruch) Payton. She lived in rural Thornton her entire life and attended the Meservey-Thornton School, kindergarten through eighth grade. Laura was currently a sophomore at Sheffield-Chapin-Meservey-Thornton High School in Sheffield, where she was a member of the volleyball team and sang in the chorus.

Laura enjoyed being with her friends and spending time with her special friend, Jeremy Robertson. When she wasn’t with her friends she would be chatting to them on her cell phone or computer. She enjoyed all sports, being on the computer, listening to music and babysitting her sister’s dog, Gonzo.

Laura was baptized and confirmed as a member of the First United Methodist Chuch and was a member of the Grimes VIP 4-H Club.

She is survived by her parents, Ronald and Nancy Payton of Thornton; sisters, Amy of Rochester, Minn., and Dana at home; paternal grandmother, Alveda Payton, and maternal grandmother, Adeline Muhlenbruch, both of Thornton. Laura is also survived by her aunts and uncles, Donna and Larry Trapp of Washta, Gary and Belva Payton of Thornton, Dave and Kay Martin of Ames, and Pam and Brian Muhlenbruch of Thornton; cousins, Casey Trapp, Kyle Trapp, Justin Payton, Dan Payton, Michele Smuck, Trisha Muhlenbruch and Cole Muhlenbruch.

Laura was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Donald Payton; maternal grandfather, Mervin Muhlenbruch; and a cousin, Charles Payton.
