LUELLA J. HUGHES


KANAWHA - Luella J. Hughes, 93, of Kanawha, passed away Tuesday (Sept. 9, 2003) at the Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha.

Funeral services for Luella Hughes will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer and Janelle Siffring, AiM officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha.

Friends may greet the family from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home, 118 East Second St. in Kanawha, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Luella Julia (Minor) Hughes was born on Aug. 26, 1910, the daughter of Ormal and Julia (Shurson) Minor, at her family's home southwest of Kan-awha. She attended country school in rural Kanawha.

On Aug. 3, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa, Luella was unit-ed in marriage with Glenn Hughes, whom she was introduced to on a blind date.

The couple enjoyed going dancing and to the movies with each other.

They made their home on a farm in rural Kanawha where they worked hard and raised their family.

Luella was a very dedicated farm wife who spent time tending to her strawberry patch and was known for the wonderful kringla she made.

She also loved to quilt with her friends at the Kanawha Lutheran Church where she was a faithful member.

Luella entered the Kanawha Community Home in November of 2000, where she remain-ed active visiting with the residents, staff, and watching the animals in the yard outside her window.

Survivors include her children, Judy Casper and her husband, George, of Cabool, Mo., Ron Hughes and his wife, Meg, of Kanawha, and Glenda Hughes of Forest City; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Gladys Spoon and her husband, Carrole, of Liberty Center, Myrtle Thielen and her husband, Joe, of Eagle Grove, and Ramona Brooks, of Des Moines; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn; a great-grandson, David Casper Jr.; two sisters, Sadie Glades Minor and Dena Johnson; and three brothers, Joe, Gayhard, and Orville Minor.

CHARLES E. 'MICKEY' MURPHY


CHARLES CITY - Charles E."Mickey" Murphy, 87, formerly of 800 Eighth Ave., died early Wednesday at the Ninth Street Chauttauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St., Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, and visitation will con-tinue one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

WILLARD 'BILL' W. SMIT


IOWA FALLS - Willard "Bill" W. Smit, 73, of Iowa Falls, died Sunday (Sept. 7, 2003) at his home in Iowa Falls after an 18-year struggle with emphysema and C.O.P.D.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Free Church in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.

Memorials may be directed to Arlene Smit, 2307 Ellis Ave., Iowa Falls, IA 50126. All memorials will be sent to Hospice of North Iowa.

Willard Wayne Smit was born on Dec. 13, 1929, on a farm near Chapin, Iowa, to Dick and Ettie (Janssen) Smit. He graduated from Chapin High School in 1947 as Valedictorian of his class. Bill served in the U.S. Army from January of 1952 until December of 1953. He was stationed in Germany most of that time. He was released from active duty at Fort Sheridan, Ill. He then served in the Army Reserves until 1960 when he was honorably discharged.

He attended Zion Reformed Church near Sheffield.

In 1962 he married Arlene (Meyer) Marken at the Church of Christ in Hampton where he attended faithfully.

Bill farmed near Sheffield until June of 1969 when the family moved to Iowa Falls.

He worked as a mechanic at Conaway John Deere Imple-ment Company in Jewel, Iowa, until 1986 when he was diagnosed with emphysema.

Bill was a Hawkeye fan and a Chicago Bulls fan. He loved watching ball games on TV, extensive reading, and spending time with his family and friends. His faith in God sustained him throughout his life.

Mr. Smit is survived by his wife, Arlene Smit, of Iowa Falls; a son, Joel Smit, of Iowa Falls; stepdaughter, Pam Bappe and her husband, Tom, of Spring Hill, Kan.; two stepsons, Lynn Marken of Hubbard, and Gene Marken and his wife, Sandy, of Rockwell City; six stepgrandchildren, Alex, Mollie, and Alice Marken, of Rockwell City, Jason Marken, of Marshalltown, Shana Lanio and her husband, Mark, of Olathe, Kan., and Aaron Bappe and his wife, Heather, of Kansas City, Kan.; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Jordan Lanio, of Olathe, Kan.; two sisters, Mildred Wenzel and her husband, George, of Belmond and Esther DeVries and her husband, Alvin, of Sheffield; a brother, Dennis Smit and his wife, Sue, of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepmother, Bessie Smit; and one sister and brother-in-law, Gert and Louis Stadtlander.

BURTON A. WILDER

MASON CITY - Burton A. Wilder, 51, of 81 Westview Drive, died on Tuesday (Sept. 9, 2003) at home.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S. E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis A. Cahill officiating. Following cremation, burial will be in St. Casimir Catholic Cemetery, Wells, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with a Scrip-tural wake service at 7 p.m.

Burton Alan Wilder was born Feb. 26, 1952, at Sleepy Eye, Minn., a son of Raymond and Marian (Schons) Wilder.

Burt was a 1971 graduate of Mason City high school. He received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

He taught math and coach-ed at Benton Community Schools, then spent two years at St. Meinrad's Seminary in Indiana.

He returned to Mason City and received a registered nursing degree from NIACC.

Burt lived in Louisville, Ky., for 17 years working at Baptist East Hospital in the oncology unit. While in Louis-ville, he enjoyed attending the symphony and theatre, and was a member of the Thoroughbred Chorus, where he competed in national contests. He worked as a volunteer to help Louisville businesses with recycling.

He was a big fan of the North Iowa Band Festival, the Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones, and all sports, especially tennis and bicycling.

He enjoyed reading, and spending time at the Mason City Public Library.

Burt volunteered at the Community Kitchen and for the City of Mason City. He was environmentally conscientious.

He is survived by his mother, Marian J. Wilder, of Mason City; six sisters, Mary Lou Thurnau (Kenneth), of Owatonna, Minn.; Nancy Miller (Gregory L.), of Mason City; Barbara J. Schlorholtz (Craig), of Independence, Kan.; Faith A. Meeker (Michael), of Kenosha, Wis.; Amy J. Haas, of Mason City; Pamela K. Muhlenbruch (Brian), of Thornton; four brothers, Michael F. Wilder, of Omaha, Neb.; Thomas E. Wilder (Joanne), of Mason City; Patrick J. Wilder, of Mason City; John E. Wilder (Nancy), of Mason City; 23 nieces and nephews; and five great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond J. Wilder in 1970.

MASON CITY - G. Annette Haddy, 87, of 4 Third St. N.W. in Mason City, died Wednesday (Sept. 10, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice In-patient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Grace United Methodist Church, 200 - 14th St. N.W., with the Rev. Sarah Rohret Odoom officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth.

Memorials may be directed to the Good Shepherd telephone reassurance program.

Visitation for Annette will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to service time Friday at the church.

Annette was born Aug. 6, 1916, the daughter of Sidney and Edith (Lester) Birch in Mason City.

She attended the Mason City Public School System and left school early to help provide for her family following the loss of her father.

She worked for the Jacob E. Decker Company as a bookkeeper for over 40 years.

She was united in marriage to William T. Haddy on Sept. 20, 1941, in Blue Earth, Minn.

Annette enjoyed playing bridge with her friends in their bridge club for many years.

She was a caregiver for all of her family at one time or another.

The past few years she has been caring for her sister Flossie.

Annette is survived by one sister, Flossie Lorentzen; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Birch; and one brother-in-law, Frank White. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; brothers, Dale and Cecil; and sisters, Betty and Phyllis.

RICEVILLE - George R. Kirchgatter, 91, of Riceville, died Tuesday (Sept. 9, 2003) at the Riceville Community Rest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville, with the Rev. Michael Parris officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Rock Township Cemetery in rural St. Ansgar.

MASON CITY - David W. Harmon, 53, of 400 Third Ave S.W. Altoona, formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (Sept. 9, 2003) at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church, 604 23rd St. N.W. in Mason City, with the Rev. Larry Day officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont, with military graveside rites by the Dumont Legion Post #360.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

David Wesley Harmon, the son of George and Margarite (Scoville) Harmon, was born May 20, 1950, at Mason City. He received his education in Des Moines.

After high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force Base being stationed at Elgin Air Force Base in Florida.

After being honorably discharged on Oct. 23, 1970, he returned to Iowa where he attended Des Moines Area Community College and Hamilton Business College.

On May 24, 1986, David was united in marriage to Shirley Buttjer at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

David enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He was a member of the Clear Lake Lions and Toastmasters, and he was also a member of the Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church of Mason City.

David is survived by his wife, Shirley Harmon, of Altoona; two brothers, Chuck Harmon, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Paul Jacobson and his wife, Beth, of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; one sister, Joy Campbell, of Green Bay, Wis.; mother-in-law, Eleanor Buttjer, of Mason City; one brother-in-law, Earl Buttjer and his wife, Shelley, of Lombard, Ill. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, David W. Harmon Jr.; and one nephew, Sam Campbell.

IOWA FALLS - Velma Lord, 82, of Iowa Falls, passed away Wednesday (Sept. 10, 2003) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church of Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Don Preston officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

CUMMING, Ga. — Allen D. Naber, 65, of Cumming, Ga., died Wednesday (Sept. 10, 2003) at his home.

ANNA MARIE ‘OMIE’ EBERHARDT


MASON CITY — Anna Marie “Omie” Eberhardt, 93, of Mason City, died Thursday (Sept. 11, 2003) at Good Shep-herd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Mark Lavrenz officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City. Visitation will also be one hour prior to service time Saturday at the church.

The family of Anna Marie “Omie” Eberhardt has request-ed that memorial contribu-tions be made to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church building fund or to Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.

Anna Marie “Omie” Eberhardt was born in a German settlement in Norka, Russia, on June 12, 1910, the daughter of Phillip and Katherine (Nolda) Lofing. She came to America at the age of 3 with her mother and two brothers to join her father who had come one year earlier.

Omie was united in marriage to John A. Eberhardt on April 11, 1926, in Mason City. He preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 1983.

Omie worked at Decker’s Meat Packing Company in Mason City in the trimming Department and retired after 43 ½ years of service.

She loved her church and was the last charter member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Her great love and joy in life was her grandchildren and having everyone together for family gatherings. She also enjoyed cooking German dishes for her family.

Left to cherish her memory are her son and daughter-in-law, John and Donna Eberhardt of Mason City; four grandchildren, Debbie (Tom) Lincoln of Clear Lake, Jo Ellen (Chuck) Younke, Marsha (Mark) Koerber and Bryan (Denise) Eberhardt, all of Mason City, nine great-grandchildren, Travis and Josh Goslin of Cedar Rapids, Zach and Beau Lincoln of Clear Lake, Dawn Roszell, Justin Younke, Ryan and Morgan Koerber, and Hannah Eberhardt all of Mason City; six great-great-grandchildren, Bria, Zane, Isaiah, Payton, Abby and Gabriel; as well as other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband John in 1983; her brothers, Henry and Phillip Lofing; and an infant daughter, Ella May.

GARNER — Thad A. Abele, 38, of Garner, died Wednesday (Sept. 10, 2003) as a result of a car accident north of Woden.

Thad Arthur Abele, the son of John Richard and Ivadell Linda (Reemstma) Abele, was born Aug. 13, 1965, at Mason City. He attended school in Garner and graduated from Garner-Hayfield High School in 1983.

Thad continued his education at NIACC in Mason City where he received an associates degree in law enforcement in 1985. He was self –employed in the hog confinement business and lived on a farm northwest of Garner.

He enjoyed football and baseball.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner.

Thad is survived by his parents, John and Ivadell of Garner; his fiancée, Cynthia Drahota, of Buffalo Center, and her two sons, Darren and Andrew; sister, Marby Lange and husband, Tom, of Hartsburg, Mo., and her two children, Shelly Heidenrich and Kristen Trainor and her husband, Greg; brother, Nile Abele and his wife, Ann, of Columbia, Mo., and their three children, Ethan, Ellie and Eric; sister, Adree Abele of St. Louis, Mo.; sister, Jill Butcher and husband, William Jr., of Suffield, Conn., and their three children, Aubrey, William III and Dory; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Brent in 1988.

WINIFRED ANDRESEN


EDINA, Minn. — Winifred Andresen, 94, of Edina, Minn., died Sept. 8, 2003, at a nursing home in St. Louis Park.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred.

She is survived by her children, Marilyn A. (Jay) Marti, Jeffry J. (Amanda) Andresen, M.D. and Lynette Andresen; grandchildren, John Marti, Jeffrey Marti, Debra Mc-Cormick, Mary Penner, Matthew Andresen, Katherine Robinson, Sonja Johnson, and Bjorn Johnson; great-grandchildren, Melissa Goltz, Dana, Colton and Kelsey Marti, Jill and Amy Mc-Cormick, Sophia and Katherine Robinson, Alex, Eric and Luke Andresen; great-great-grandchildren, Jordan and Kaylie Goltz; brothers, Leonard and Walter Lindquist; nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mizpah United Church of Christ, 412 Fifth St. in Hopkins, Minn. Interment will be in Lakewood Cemetery.
