KANAWHA - Luella J. Hughes, 93, of
Kanawha, passed away Tuesday (Sept. 9,
2003) at the Kanawha Community Home in
Kanawha.
Funeral services for Luella Hughes will
be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Kanawha
Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. John
Meyer and Janelle Siffring, AiM
officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam
Township Cemetery near Kanawha.
Friends may greet the family from 6 to 8
p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral
Home, 118 East Second St. in Kanawha,
and one hour prior to services at the
church.
Luella Julia (Minor) Hughes was born on
Aug. 26, 1910, the daughter of Ormal and
Julia (Shurson) Minor, at her family's
home southwest of Kan-awha. She attended
country school in rural Kanawha.
On Aug. 3, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa,
Luella was unit-ed in marriage with
Glenn Hughes, whom she was introduced to
on a blind date.
The couple enjoyed going dancing and to
the movies with each other.
They made their home on a farm in rural
Kanawha where they worked hard and
raised their family.
Luella was a very dedicated farm wife
who spent time tending to her strawberry
patch and was known for the wonderful
kringla she made.
She also loved to quilt with her friends
at the Kanawha Lutheran Church where she
was a faithful member.
Luella entered the Kanawha Community
Home in November of 2000, where she
remain-ed active visiting with the
residents, staff, and watching the
animals in the yard outside her window.
Survivors include her children, Judy
Casper and her husband, George, of
Cabool, Mo., Ron Hughes and his wife,
Meg, of Kanawha, and Glenda Hughes of
Forest City; six grandchildren; 14
great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandchild; three sisters,
Gladys Spoon and her husband, Carrole,
of Liberty Center, Myrtle Thielen and
her husband, Joe, of Eagle Grove, and
Ramona Brooks, of Des Moines; and many
nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; husband, Glenn; a
great-grandson, David Casper Jr.; two
sisters, Sadie Glades Minor and Dena
Johnson; and three brothers, Joe,
Gayhard, and Orville Minor.

IOWA FALLS - Willard "Bill" W. Smit, 73,
of Iowa Falls, died Sunday (Sept. 7,
2003) at his home in Iowa Falls after an
18-year struggle with emphysema and
C.O.P.D.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Saturday at the Evangelical Free Church
in Iowa Falls, with burial in the Union
Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.
Friday at the Surls Funeral Home in Iowa
Falls.

Willard Wayne Smit was born on Dec. 13,
1929, on a farm near Chapin, Iowa, to
Dick and Ettie (Janssen) Smit. He
graduated from Chapin High School in
1947 as Valedictorian of his class. Bill
served in the U.S. Army from January of
1952 until December of 1953. He was
stationed in Germany most of that time.
He was released from active duty at Fort
Sheridan, Ill. He then served in the
Army Reserves until 1960 when he was
honorably discharged.
He attended Zion Reformed Church near
Sheffield.
In 1962 he married Arlene (Meyer) Marken
at the Church of Christ in Hampton where
he attended faithfully.
Bill farmed near Sheffield until June of
1969 when the family moved to Iowa
Falls.
He worked as a mechanic at Conaway John
Deere Imple-ment Company in Jewel, Iowa,
until 1986 when he was diagnosed with
emphysema.
Bill was a Hawkeye fan and a Chicago
Bulls fan. He loved watching ball games
on TV, extensive reading, and spending
time with his family and friends. His
faith in God sustained him throughout
his life.
Mr. Smit is survived by his wife, Arlene
Smit, of Iowa Falls; a son, Joel Smit,
of Iowa Falls; stepdaughter, Pam Bappe
and her husband, Tom, of Spring Hill,
Kan.; two stepsons, Lynn Marken of
Hubbard, and Gene Marken and his wife,
Sandy, of Rockwell City; six
stepgrandchildren, Alex, Mollie, and
Alice Marken, of Rockwell City, Jason
Marken, of Marshalltown, Shana Lanio and
her husband, Mark, of Olathe, Kan., and
Aaron Bappe and his wife, Heather, of
Kansas City, Kan.; one stepgreat-granddaughter,
Jordan Lanio, of Olathe, Kan.; two
sisters, Mildred Wenzel and her husband,
George, of Belmond and Esther DeVries
and her husband, Alvin, of Sheffield; a
brother, Dennis Smit and his wife, Sue,
of Hampton; and several nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
a stepmother, Bessie Smit; and one
sister and brother-in-law, Gert and

Westview Drive, died on Tuesday (Sept.
9, 2003) at home.

Burton Alan Wilder was born Feb. 26,
1952, at Sleepy Eye, Minn., a son of
Raymond and Marian (Schons) Wilder.
Burt was a 1971 graduate of Mason City
high school. He received a bachelor of
arts degree from the University of
Northern Iowa.
He taught math and coach-ed at Benton
Community Schools, then spent two years
at St. Meinrad's Seminary in Indiana.
He returned to Mason City and received a
registered nursing degree from NIACC.
Burt lived in Louisville, Ky., for 17
years working at Baptist East Hospital
in the oncology unit. While in Louis-ville,
he enjoyed attending the symphony and
theatre, and was a member of the
Thoroughbred Chorus, where he competed
in national contests. He worked as a
volunteer to help Louisville businesses
with recycling.
He was a big fan of the North Iowa Band
Festival, the Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State
Cyclones, and all sports, especially
tennis and bicycling.
He enjoyed reading, and spending time at
the Mason City Public Library.
Burt volunteered at the Community
Kitchen and for the City of Mason City.
He was environmentally conscientious.
He is survived by his mother, Marian J.
Wilder, of Mason City; six sisters, Mary
Lou Thurnau (Kenneth), of Owatonna,
Minn.; Nancy Miller (Gregory L.), of
Mason City; Barbara J. Schlorholtz
(Craig), of Independence, Kan.; Faith A.
Meeker (Michael), of Kenosha, Wis.; Amy
J. Haas, of Mason City; Pamela K.
Muhlenbruch (Brian), of Thornton; four
brothers, Michael F. Wilder, of Omaha,
Neb.; Thomas E. Wilder (Joanne), of

years.
She was united in marriage to William T.
Haddy on Sept. 20, 1941, in Blue Earth,
Minn.
Annette enjoyed playing bridge with her
friends in their bridge club for many
years.
She was a caregiver for all of her
family at one time or another.
The past few years she has been caring
for her sister Flossie.
Annette is survived by one sister,
Flossie Lorentzen; a sister-in-law,
Dorothy Birch; and one brother-in-law,
Frank White. She is also survived by
many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; husband, William; brothers,
Dale and Cecil; and sisters, Betty and
Phyllis.

and Margarite (Scoville) Harmon, was
born May 20, 1950, at Mason City. He
received his education in Des Moines.
After high school he enlisted in the
United States Air Force Base being
stationed at Elgin Air Force Base in
Florida.
After being honorably discharged on Oct.
23, 1970, he returned to Iowa where he
attended Des Moines Area Community
College and Hamilton Business College.
On May 24, 1986, David was united in
marriage to Shirley Buttjer at the
Little Brown Church in Nashua.
David enjoyed spending time with his
family and friends.
He was a member of the Clear Lake Lions
and Toastmasters, and he was also a
member of the Rolling Acres Free
Methodist Church of Mason City.
David is survived by his wife, Shirley
Harmon, of Altoona; two brothers, Chuck
Harmon, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and
Paul Jacobson and his wife, Beth, of
Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; one sister, Joy
Campbell, of Green Bay, Wis.;
mother-in-law, Eleanor Buttjer, of Mason

in Mason City.

The family of Anna Marie “Omie”
Eberhardt has request-ed that
memorial contribu-tions be made

North Iowa in her memory.
Anna Marie “Omie” Eberhardt was
born in a German settlement in
Norka, Russia, on June 12, 1910,
the daughter of Phillip and
Katherine (Nolda) Lofing. She
came to America at the age of 3
with her mother and two brothers
to join her father who had come
one year earlier.
Omie was united in marriage to
John A. Eberhardt on April 11,
1926, in Mason City. He preceded
her in death on Nov. 18, 1983.
Omie worked at Decker’s Meat
Packing Company in Mason City in
the trimming Department and
retired after 43 ½ years of
service.
She loved her church and was the
last charter member of Bethlehem
Lutheran Church.
Her great love and joy in life
was her grandchildren and having
everyone together for family
gatherings. She also enjoyed
cooking German dishes for her
family.
Left to cherish her memory are
her son and daughter-in-law,
John and Donna Eberhardt of
Mason City; four grandchildren,
Debbie (Tom) Lincoln of Clear
Lake, Jo Ellen (Chuck) Younke,
Marsha (Mark) Koerber and Bryan

Abele, was born Aug. 13, 1965,

Thad continued his education at
NIACC in Mason City where he
received an associates degree in
law enforcement in 1985. He was
self –employed in the hog
confinement business and lived
on a farm northwest of Garner.
He enjoyed football and
baseball.
He was a member of the United
Methodist Church in Garner.
Thad is survived by his parents,
John and Ivadell of Garner; his
fiancée, Cynthia Drahota, of
Buffalo Center, and her two
sons, Darren and Andrew; sister,
Marby Lange and husband, Tom, of
Hartsburg, Mo., and her two
children, Shelly Heidenrich and
Kristen Trainor and her husband,
