CLEAR LAKE — Doris P. “Dodie” Stuart, 87, died peacefully Thursday (Sept.4, 2003) at her home, 821 S. Shore Drive in Clear Lake. Inurnment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake at a later date.

The family suggests any memorials be given to the Doris P. Stuart Memorial Fund.

As per her request, the body is to be cremated and no services are to held.

Doris was born Oct. 23, 1915, in Edison, Neb., the daughter of Harry and Bertha (Daiss) Pickett.

Doris married Robert C. Stuart and they owned and operated Stuart Realty for many years. She continued to operate it after her husband’s death in 1963 until her retirement.

Doris was a loving mother and enjoyed being with her family.

She will be loved and miss-ed by all those that survive her: a son, James P. Stuart of Clear Lake.; seven grandchildren, Allison and Jimmy Stuart of Las Vegas, Nev., Sean Dunbar of Columbus, Ohio, Holly Harris and her husband, David, of Germantown, Wis., Heather Shumaker and her husband, Sean, of Loveland, Ohio, Billy Larson of Long Beach, Calif., and Analyn Gapay and her husband, Sean, of Burnsville, Minn.; four great-grandchildren, Christopher, Casey and Corbin Shumaker and Michael Gapay; one sister, Jean Moss of Overton, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert C. “Bob” Stuart; two daughters, Suzanne (Stuart) Dunbar and Sharon (Stuart) Larson; an infant son, William Stuart; and eight brothers and sisters.

BRYAN J. HEITMEYER


BEAMAN — Bryan J. Heitmeyer, 44, of Beaman, died Tuesday (Sept. 2, 2003) at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center in Marshalltown.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Beaman United Methodist Church in Beaman, with Pastor John Hall officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Beaman.

Visitation was held on Friday at Johnston Funeral Home, 115 W. Grundy in Conrad.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Bryan J. Heitmeyer Memorial Fund.

Bryan was born on Oct. 19, 1958, in Fort Dodge to Sidney and Norma Jean (Stiff) Heitmeyer.

Bryan graduated from BCL High School in 1977. He be-longed to the Beaman United Methodist Church and the Oakwood Golf Club.

He was united in marriage to Kim Morgan on Jan. 3, 1986, in Beaman.

He was a machine operator at NCM.

He is survived by his father, Sidney (Renee) Heitmeyer of Garner; his wife, Kim Heitmeyer of Beaman; three sons, Chad (Lisa) Mull of Conrad, Justin Bolton of Plover, Wis., and Tyler Hietmeyer of Beaman; two daughters, Mallory Heitmeyer of Beaman, and Morgan Heitmeyer of Beaman; one sister, Brenda Heitmeyer of Beaman; and grandmother, Tena Heitmeyer of Sheldon; and one grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Norma Jean Heitmeyer; and one son, Ryan Bolton.

BELMOND — Alice M. (Hunst) Peterson, 66, of Belmond, passed away on Wednesday (Sept. 3, 2003) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial will take place in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery near Belmond.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick Lane S. in Belmond, with a parish rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Alice Mae, the daughter of Morse and Marie (Leens) Hunst, was born on March 15, 1937, in Belmond. She attended schools in the Belmond area and graduated from Belmond High School in 1956.

In 1956, Alice was united in marriage to Bob Iehl. They made their home in Belmond.

In 1973 she was united in marriage to Jim Peterson. The couple made their home in Belmond.

Alice was a homemaker, worked in day care for 20 years and also worked as a waitress.

Family was very important to Alice and her life revolved around her three girls.

She enjoyed camping, fishing and the Trampel arena rodeos.

Alice liked listening to Alan Jackson.

Alice was a very upbeat, positive person. She loved everyone and never had an unkind word for anyone.

Alice had a strong faith and was very involved in her church. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church. She also belonged to the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Alice is survived by her daughter, Deb Studer and her husband, Matt, of Belmond; granddaughters, Katie Magnuson and Cheyenne Studer of Belmond; two sisters, Laura Saunders of Belmond and Bonnie Stewart of Garner; mother-in-law Janice Olinger of Meservey; two sisters-in-law, Yvonne Rodamaker and her husband, Rich, of Charles City, and Charlene Anderson and her husband, Willis, of Belmond; brother-in-law, Dean Bridges of Mason City; nieces and nephews, Jill Stoffer and her husband, Mark Allen, of Belmond, Lonny Stoffer of Monet, Mo., Leland Stoffer of Florida, Pam Van-Gerpen and her husband, John, of Garner, Amy Modderman of Rockford, Ill., and Jane Grieman and her husband, Pat, of Manteca, Calif.; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Alice is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bob Iehl; her husband, Jim Peterson; one child in infancy; and one brother in infancy.

MASON CITY — Gladys M. Bracken, 94, of 501 S. Kentucky, died Thursday (Sept. 4, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

MASON CITY — Raymond A. Bagley, 49, of 2028 S. Taft Ave., died Thursday (Sept. 4, 2003) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood- St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.

Raymond Alan, the son of James and Dorothy (Ryan) Bagley, was born March 25, 1954, at Mason City, Iowa. He received his education from Mason City High School.

After graduating from high school in 1972, he started working in the beverage business. He worked in the business for 25 years, most recently for Kabrick Distributing Co.

Raymond was united in marriage to Terri Sue DeYoung on Sept. 27, 1986, in Mason City.

Raymond enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking, fishing, NASCAR and stock car racing, and collecting coins, antiques and other beverage memorabilia.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Terri, of Mason City; two sons, Eric Michael Bagley and Brent Alan Bagley, both of Mason City; daughter, Candi Sue Olson and her fiancé, Casey Patras, of West Des Moines; sisters Brenda Bucklew and her husband, Norman, of Des Moines, Janet Buehler and her husband, Lyle, of Westgate, and Sandra Frazier and her husband, Ed, of Republic, Wash. Also surviving are his mother and father-in-law, Donald and Gloria Hiscocks of Britt and Norman DeYoung, of Douglas, Wyo.; and several nieces and nep-hews; and his dog, Peaches.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Jeffrey Buehler.

NORTHWOOD — Evelyn Myrtle Rhoden, beloved friend, sister-in-law and aunt, went to be with the Lord on Monday (Sept. 1, 2003). She died at the Pacific Coast Manor Convelescent Home in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood with the Rev. Richard Jensen of the United Methodist Church in Northwood officiating.

The family of Evelyn Myrtle Rhoden has requested that memorial contributions be made to a favorite charity of their choice.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood, is in charge of the local ar-rangements.

She was born in l915 in Athboy, S.D. She taught school in Iowa for 15 years, farmed in Missouri and then, in 1958, married the love of her life, Hugo Rhoden, who passed away in l990. A long-term resident of Soquel.

Evelyn was a member of the Methodist Church, American Legion, Eastern Star and Parkinson’s Support Group.

She and Hugo traveled, raised beautiful dahlias, and worked to build the Avenue of Flags. In later years Evelyn loved to play cribbage and visit with friends and caregivers.

With their loving assistance, she was able to continue living in the home Hugo built, where she enjoyed music and laughter, playing cribbage, celebrations, and visits with friends and family members.

Evelyn was honest, kind, faithful, generous, practical, wise and funny.

This beautiful “last leaf on the tree” will be remembered forever with love and respect.

MASON CITY - Mae D. Greene, 79, of Mason City, died Wednesday (Sept. 3, 2003) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania, with the Rev. Tom Healey, Chaplain, Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home and one hour prior to services on Monday.

Memorials may be given to the Mae D. Greene Scholarship Fund for Heritage Care Center Employees.

Mae was born Jan. 16, 1924, in Vinton, the daughter of Jack and Callie (Henry) Drafahl.

She attended and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines.

Mae was married to Robert M. Greene on May 22, 1943, in Des Moines. They lived in Cedar Rapids for 25 years where she worked as a secretary in the Development Office of Cornell College for six years. They moved to Mason City in the early '70s and she drove for Winnebago Industries for ten years.

Mae was active with "United We Stand" and was Cerro Gordo County Coordinator and District Coordinator. She was also active with the Re-form Party and served as their first state secretary.

Mae is survived by her son, Charles Greene and his wife, Kay, of Mason City; daughters, Sherry Sauerbry, of Independence, Mo., Christine Ver Helst and fiance, Craig Anderson, of Fort Dodge, and Eve Ricaurte and husband, Eduardo, of Toledo, Ohio; grandchildren, Lori Matthes and husband, Zach, of Climax Springs, Mo., Jeff Sauerbry, of Independence, Mo., Eric Ricaurte, of Puerto Aventuras, Mexico, Emma Ricaurte, of Washington, D.C., Brandon Ricaurte, of Toledo, Ohio, Andrea Ricaurte, of Toledo, Ohio, Margie Ver Helst, of Des Moines, and Alex Anderson, of Fort Dodge; great-grand-children, Jessica Kilbury and Mason Matthes, of Climax Springs, Mo.; brother, Jack Drafahl and his wife, Beverly, of Montezuma; sister-in-law, Lura Winterowd, of Cedar Rapids; and her many friends at the Heritage Care Center.

MASON CITY - Maurice Stephen "Stavros" Sheehy, 44, of Mason City, died Friday (Sept. 5, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Mason City with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

SHEFFIELD - Dale R. Smit, 52, of Sheffield, died Thursday, (Sept. 4, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Reformed Church, rural Sheffield, with the Rev. Art Zewert presiding. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, 203 Maple St., Sheffield.

Dale Smit was born June 30, 1951, a son of Henry and Tena (Koenen) Smit at their home in Sheffield. Dale was baptized and received into communicate membership of Zion Reformed Church March 19, 1967.

He graduated from Shef-field-Chapin High School and then worked in his family's drainage contracting business for several years. Later he was a district sales manager for Golden Grain Corp. selling bins and equipment. Then he drove truck for Doug's Transfer in Sheffield, and later for several years for KSP Trucking in Boone, until his illness made it impossible to continue working.

Dale married Sharon Peyton McCaslin on Dec. 17, 1988, and they made their home in Sheffield.

Dale was a member of Zion Reformed Church in Sheffield.

He enjoyed hunting, garden-ing, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. He especially loved spending time at the campgrounds in Bay City, Wis. on Lake Pepin on the Mississippi River. He and Sharon enjoyed spending their summer weekends there as often as possible.

Dale is survived by his wife, Sharon; his stepsons, Terry (Penny) McCaslin and family, of Sheffield, and Kevin (Sara) McCaslin and family, of Rockford; his mother, Tena Smit, of Sheffield; brothers, Duane (Ilene) Smit, of Shef-field, Gene (Laurie) Smit, of Sheffield, and Delbert (Carolyn) Smit, of Sheffield; sisters, Elaine (Don) Lubkeman, of Latimer, Mavis (Gordon) Meyer, of Latimer, and Diane (Ted) Hughes, of Sheffield; sister-in-law, Patricia Smit, of Sheffield; seven step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his stepson, Danny; his father, Henry Smit; and two brothers, Donald and Harold Smit.

Gladys was born Dec. 12, 1908, in Lime Creek Township, Cerro Gordo County, the daughter of Paul and Bertha (Boy) Bryant.

She married Robert E. McCrea in 1925 in Mason City. They farmed southwest of Mason City for many years. Mr. McCrea died in 1955. She would later marry Arthur J. Bracken.

Gladys was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, enjoyed cards, garden-ing and was an avid Minnesota Twins and Iowa Hawkeye basketball fan.

Gladys is survived by a daughter-in-law, Corinne McCrea, of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; granddaughter, Bonnie Dezarov, of Palm Desert, Calif.; great-grandson, Bobby Dezarov of Palm Desert, Calif.; step-daughters, Dorothy Frenz, of Clear Lake, Lavonne Grupp, of Chanhassen, Minn., and Marian Flynn, of Hoopeston, Ill.; step-son, Donald Bracken and wife, Marge, of Rochester, Minn.; step-grandchildren, Kathleen Dahlstrand and husband, Paul, of Lyons, Ill., Judith Frenz, of Clear Lake, David Frenz and wife, Karrie, of Mason City, Barbara Smith and husband, Dick, of Sumner, Penny Bracken and partner, Buzz Mitchell, and son, Andrew Mitchell, of Roch-ester, Minn., Tom Grupp, of Minneapolis, Scott Grupp, of Alabama, and Jacquelyn Johnson and husband, Scott, of Lakeland, Fla.; step-great-grandchildren, Kevin Dahl-strand and wife, June, Shawn, Colin and Corey Dahlstrand, Doug Frenz and wife, Marie, Chris Frenz and wife, Jackie, Kara Winkowitsch and husband, Doug, Erik Smith and wife, Lori, Tracy Smith, Tony Smith and wife, Gina, Shelley Schwieso and husband, Curt, Clair Grupp and husband, Michael, Todd Grupp, Cynthia Abrego and husband, Pablo, and Graham Johnson, and many step-great-great-grandchildren.

Margaret Brunsvold was born on March 30, 1915, in rural Emmons, Minn. to Soren and Christine (Ellingson) Loland.

She attended Silver Lake Country School and graduated from Northwood High School in 1933.

Margaret married Earl Brunsvold on Oct. 13, 1940. They farmed outside Hanlontown from 1945 to 1972. They retired to Clear Lake, living there from 1972 to 1987.

Margaret was employed at the Cerro Gordo County Home as the head cook from 1973 to 1985. She moved to Wilmington, N.C., in 1987 and returned in 1996 to live in Northwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl; brother, Jake Loland; sister, Dora Dahl; and granddaughter, Mariaha Rose Brunsvold.

Margaret is survived by one son, Steven Brunsvold, of Polk City; two daughters, Donna Katz, of Wilmington, N.C., and Marcia Bride, of Apple Valley, Calif.; six grandchildren; one brother, Stanley Loland, of Toeterville; and one sister, Ruth Winklemann, of Northwood.

MASON CITY — Gladys M. Bracken, 94, of 501 S. Kentucky, died Thursday (Sept. 4, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Avenue, with the Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth.

Visitation was held Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, and will continue today at the church one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be given to Wesley United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Gladys was born Dec. 12, 1908, in Lime Creek Township, Cerro Gordo County, the daughter of Paul and Bertha (Boy) Bryant.

She married Robert E. McCrea in 1925 in Mason City. They farmed southwest of Mason City for many years. Mr. McCrea died in 1955. She would later marry Arthur J. Bracken.

Gladys was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, enjoyed cards, gardening and was an avid Minnesota Twins and Iowa Hawkeye Basketball fan.

ROCKFORD — Carol Ann “Sis” Fenton, 50, of 204 1st Ave. S.W., Rockford, left us on Saturday (Sept. 6, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, to be with her grandson Jordan.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 805 E. Main Ave., Rockford, with the Rev. Patricia Shaw officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

The family will greet friends from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford.

“Sis” was born July 28, 1953, in Charles City, to Delmer and Caroline (Mehmen) Fisher. She was one of six children.

“Sis” had spent most of her life in the Rockford and Floyd County area.

On Nov. 4, 1972, “Sis” was united in marriage to Dennis Fenton at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union two sons were born, Delmer and Jerry.

“Sis” enjoyed gardening and cooking for her family. “We will miss her green chili”. She enjoyed going to the car races, especially those in which her sons participated and competed in. “Sis” loved to play bingo on the computer and spending countless hours with her grandchildren. She was a very kind and nurturing mother, grandmother and wife.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her loving and devoted husband, Dennis of Rockford; two sons, Delmer Fenton and his wife, Melissa “Missy”, of Marble Rock, and Jerry Fenton and his wife, Corinne “Cori”, of Williamsburg; her pride and joy of three grandchildren, Madison and Cole Fenton of Marble Rock, and Cale Fenton of Williamsburg; her mother, Caroline Fisher, of Rockford; two sisters, Robin Shafer and her husband, Scott, of Rockford, and Sandy Jones and her husband, Kevin, of Aredale; three brothers — twin brothers, Allan Fisher and his wife, LuAnn, of Clear Lake, and Alvin Fisher and his wife, Vicki, of Charles City — and Jim Fisher and his wife, Melissa, of Rockford. CLEAR LAKE — Janice Joy Reisetter Willim was born in Hampton, New Year’s Day, 1938, the daughter of Jay T. and Albie Klement Reisetter.

The family moved to Marshalltown when Jan was an infant where her father established Mid-West Machine and Welding Company.

Raised in Marshalltown, she was baptized and confirmed at Elim Lutheran Church and graduated from high school with the class of 1955. Following high school, she attended the Paris Academy in Cedar Rapids, and Iowa State University in Ames.

As an expert and talented cosmetologist, Jan taught at the Paris Academy and sponsored hair-styling and training seminars in Iowa and surrounding states.

Jan then returned to Marshalltown where she and Gerald Rash established a cosmetology school.

While residing in Cedar Rapids, Jan was chosen Miss Cedar Rapids, and the following year she represented Marshalltown and was selected first runner-up in the Miss Iowa pageant.

On November 28, 1962, Janice was united in marriage with Lee D. Willim at Elim Lutheran Church in Marshalltown. Their union was blessed with four sons: Bartley, Eric, Adam and Matthew.

They resided in Marshalltown until purchasing the funeral homes in Dows and Latimer in 1968. They later owned and operated funeral businesses in Belmond, Klemme, Clarion and Eagle Grove. In 1977 they moved to Clarion and operated the funeral homes until selling them in 1997. In 1998 the Willims left Clarion spending their time between their homes at Clear Lake and Fort Myers Beach, Fla.

In addition to assisting her husband in the funeral businesses, Jan was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Clarion and was active in community affairs, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Federated Women and the Republican Women.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, entertaining and traveling both here and abroad.

Jan was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer Aug. 5, 2003, and her death occurred Sept. 6, 2003, at their home in Clear Lake. At the time of her death, she had attained the age of 65 years, nine months and six days.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Jay and Albie Reisetter, and one brother, Leon D. Reisetter.

Those remaining to cherish her memory include her husband, Lee D. Willim; four sons, Bartley J. Willim and wife, Tonya, of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Eric L.T. Willim and fiancée, Becky, of Clarion, Adam W. Willim, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Matthew D. Willim, of South Attleboro, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Joshua, Leah, Blake, Lexi, Ashlee, Madison and Audrey; her sister, Joyce M. Reisetter, of Phoenix, Ariz.; her brother, Leo W. Reisetter, of Marshalltown; mother-in-law, Lova Willim Smith, of Clarion; and other relatives and friends.

The family will greet family and friends at the Willim Funeral Home in Clarion from 5 until 7p.m. Tuesday.

LATIMER — Henry A. Koenen, age 83, of Latimer, passed away Friday (Sept. 5, 2003) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City while surrounded by family.

Funeral services for Henry A. Koenen will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Reformed Church in Alexander. Pastor Phil Arnold will officiate. Burial will take place in the Alexander Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be provided by the Hansen-Have American Legion Post #658 of Latimer.

Henry, the son of Harm and Gazena Halfwassen Koenen, was born July 20, 1920, in rural Latimer.

He attended Plain View County School, and was confirmed at Zion Reformed Church.

Henry served his country for four years in the United States Navy aboard the USS Hermitage during World War II.

On July 22, 1942, Henry was united in marriage with Viola Stoffer at the Alexander Reformed Church. The couple made their home and farmed in rural Alexander until 1978, after which they farmed in rural Latimer until retirement in 1983. Following retirement, Henry and Viola lived in the town of Latimer.

Henry was a member of the First Reformed Church of Alexander and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and spending time with friends and family.

Henry is survived by his wife,Viola, and their three children, Dianne Long and her husband, Michael, of Mason City, Janet Osborne and her husband, Thomas, of Tucson, Ariz., and Craig Koenen, of Newton, ten grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Harm and Peter, and four sisters, Grace, Anna, Rebecca, and Helen.

MASON CITY — Maurice Stephen “Stavros” Sheehy, 44, of 2 S. Pierce Ave., Mason City, died following a lengthy illness Friday morning (Sept. 5, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 2nd St. S.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating the celebration of Maurice’s life. Interment will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Maurice Stephen “Stavros” Sheehy was born July 6, 1959, in Mason City, to James and Esther (Reres) Sheehy. He was one of four children.

Maurice attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1977. He furthered his education when he attended and graduated from North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City.

Maurice honorably dedicated himself to his country having served in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Important to Maurice was his devotion of his faith at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox church of which he was an active participant.

Maurice’s leisure activities and interest included Tae-Kwon-Do at the North Iowa Martial Arts Academy, where he achieved the level of brown belt.

Maurie, as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, also enjoyed the outdoor recreation of hunting and fishing. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings and University of Iowa Hawkeyes.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing Maurie’s life are his daughter, Kascey Laine Sheehy and his mother, Esther Sheehy, both of Mason City; a sister, Dilo Etter and her husband, Randy, of Denver, Colo.; two brothers, John Sheehy and his wife, Teri, of Mason City, and Tom Sheehy and his wife, Deb, of Waukee; three nephews; three nieces; two great-nieces; his godmother, Kondilo Johnson; Maurie was godfather of Amy Sheehy and Ryan Piper. CROFTON, Md. — Frank Slepicka, 77, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel and U.S. Postal Service manager, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Saturday (Sept. 6, 2003). He lived in Crofton, Md.

Mr. Slepicka was born in Mason City, Iowa. He graduated from Holy Family School in Mason City, Loras College in Dubuque, and attended the Theological College of the Catholic University of America. He was the organist for the choirs at these schools. He received an MBA from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Mr. Slepicka enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and then entered Officers’ Candidate School. In the USAF, he was an investigator in the Office of Special Investigations in Germany and a Computer Management Specialist at Mather Air Force Base , Calif., and at Suitland, Md. He received a Bronze Star for his work in Vietnam and a Meritorious Service Medal.

In 1972, Mr. Slepicka retired and began a second career at the U.S Postal Service, where he started in the Inspector’s Office and then moved to the Equal Employment Office.

He retired in 1994, and since then has traveled several times to England, Scotland, Ireland, and Italy.

His hobbies were reading (especially spy novels) and music.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Kathleen Slepicka; one brother, Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka; three daughters, Antonia Antonucci, Paula Hovan, and Stephanie Shipp; and four grandchildren, Rick Antonucci, David Hovan, and Sarah and Rachel Shipp.

Delwyn Dean Stromer, the son of Aaron Arthur and Ruby Evelyn (Goll) Stromer, was born April 22, 1930, on a farm southwest of Garner.

He attended rural school in Liberty Township until the eighth grade and graduated from Garner High School in 1947. After high school he helped his father on the farm.

On Aug. 26, 1950, he married Harriet June Ostendorf at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Meservey. They made their home on a farm southwest of Garner where he farmed. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict from 1953 to 1955.

Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Garner and continued farming.

In 1966, Delwyn began 23 years of service to the State of Iowa as a member of the General Assembly, including service as the Speaker of the House of Representatives during the 69th General Assembly. During that time he was well known for his education leadership, having served as the education committee chair for much of his tenure.

In 1989, Delwyn and Harriet moved to Kansas City, Mo., where he served as the General Services Administrator during the Bush Administration.

In 1993, they moved to West Des Moines where he served with Sen. Charles Grassley’s staff as his agriculture advisor until his retirement in 1999.

Delwyn and Harriet spent the past three winters in Weslaco, Texas.

He enjoyed reading, walking, camping and traveling.

Music was a big part of his life and in his younger years he enjoyed playing tuba in the Old Timers Band in Garner as well as playing in Ray’s Accordion Band.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner where he served as a deacon, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir.

He was active in Farm Bureau and was a past member of the Garner Lions Club.

His political memberships and positions included the Executive Committee of National Conference of State Legislatures, 1977-1980, national chair of Advanced Legislative Program Seminar, 1981-1984, assistant majority floor leader in the 65th General Assembly and assistant minority floor leader in the 66th and 67th General Assemblies, Speaker pro tempore, 68th General Assembly, Speaker of the House, 69th General Assembly, and Minority leader, 70th, 71st, 72nd and 73rd General Assemblies.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet, of West Des Moines; his mother, Ruby Stromer, of Garner; daughter, Linda Upmeyer and husband, Doug, of Garner and their five children, Sara of Columbia, Mo., Chad of Garner, Matt and wife, Erica, of Ankeny and Blake and Tyler of Garner; daughter, Pamela Birkenholz and husband, Robert, of Columbus, Ohio and their two sons, Todd and his fiancée, Robin Wade, of St. Louis, Mo. and Reed of Columbia, Mo.; son, David Stromer and wife, Kimberly, of Garner and their three children, Gretchen, Emma and Lucas of Garner; a daughter-in-law, Michelle Doble and husband, Joel, of Garner and their children, Jamie Stromer of Britt, Nicole Katter and husband, Sam, of Garner and Misty Doble of Tempe, Ariz.; two great-grandsons, Tyson and Josh Stromer of Britt; two sisters, Vivian Bovenmyer and husband, Dwight, of Garner and Marian DeWitt and husband, Allan, of Garner; a sister-in-law, Thelma Stromer Gates and husband, Robert, of Lake Tahoe, Nev.; and many nieces and nephews.

HAMPTON — Burt W. Weaver, 84, of Hampton, died Sunday (Sept. 7, 2003) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Burt W. Weaver was born Nov. 4, 1918 in Buffalo Center to Allen and Anna (Heikens) Weaver.

He was educated at Buffalo Center Country Schools.

He served in World War II in the South Pacific in New Guinea.

He was united in marriage to Lily Aukes on Feb. 14, 1948, in Buffalo Center. She passed away in 1959.

He then married Betty Sims on June 4, 1983, in Hampton, Iowa

He was a farmer.

He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed playing 500, reading and going to Mens Prayer Breakfasts.

He was a life long member of the Buffalo Center American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Weaver, of Hampton; daughter, Mary Ann Garvey and her husband, Dan, of Farmington, Minn.; a son, David Weaver and his wife, Sheila, of Madison Lake, Minn.; grandson, Richard Garvey and his wife, Heather, of Apple Valley, Minn.; granddaughter, Karla Garvey, of Farmington, Minn.; grandson, Shawn Garvey and wife, Jennifer, of Prior Lake, Minn.; stepgranddaughter, Mercedes Morson, of Madison Lake, Minn.; stepgrandson, Micah Morson, of Madison Lake, Minn.

CLEAR LAKE — George H. Dodd, 89, 200 15th Ave S., Clear Lake, died Sunday (Sept. 7, 2003) at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

George was born Oct. 23, 1913, in New Providence, Iowa, the son of Guy and Eulalia (Lundy) Dodd. His family moved to Clear Lake where he attended school.

He worked for the Mason City Brick & Tile and also helped cut ice on Clear Lake.

George married Alice Geneva Prestholt in February of 1936. He farmed in the Clear Lake area for many years until he retired and moved to Hanlontown.

George married Florence H. Veele on March 4, 1972, in Mason City. He moved back to Clear Lake in 1997.

George enjoyed traveling, camping, bird watching and spending their winters in Mission, Texas. He also spent time doing woodworking.

George is survived by a daughter, Darlene Butner and her husband, Robert Jr., of Clear Lake; a son, Byron Dodd and his wife, Bonnie, of Plymouth; seven grandchildren, Michael Haugen, Alice Bramley, Mark Haugen, all of Clear Lake, Michele Anderson and her husband Tom, of Des Moines, Dan Dodd and his wife, Kindra, of Manly, Jason Dodd and his wife, April, of Manly, and Amy Lang and her husband, Rod, of Swea City; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Myrna Schmidt, of Garner; and a brother, Ralph Dodd and his wife, Theo, of Clear Lake, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

Mabel E. Hall was born Aug. 10, 1912, in Ulster Township, Southeast of Rudd, the daughter of Fred and Iva (Blunt) Hall. Mabel graduated from Rockford High School and came to Mason City in 1936.

She was a pastry cook for 35 years, retiring in 1978.

On May 29, 1932, Mabel was united in marriage to Earl K. Hutchison in Rockford, Iowa. They enjoyed many happy years together until Earl’s death on Feb. 12, 1957.

She was then united in marriage to Arlie I. Otto on May 18, 1958, in Mason City.

Mabel was a long-time member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed every Tuesday volunteering time tying quilts and sewing at the Senior Citizen’s Center. Mabel was also a volunteer for RSVP Club.

She enjoyed cooking for her family, playing cards, tending to her flowers. What brought the most warmth to her heart were the family get-togethers.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Eileen Steinwandt and husband, Henry “Hank” of Mason City; grandaughter, Teresa MacDougall and husband, Craig, of Mason City; grandson, Steve Steinwandt and wife, Mary, of Georgetown, Ky.; granddaughter, Tammy Bryant and husband, Ted, of Mason City; grandaughter, Karen Steinwandt of Traer, Iowa; six great-grandchildren, Amber Steinwandt of Kissamee, Fla., Christina MacDougall of Mason City, Phillip MacDougall of Mason City, Gregory Bryant of Mason City. MASON CITY — Virgil Roy Stump, 79, of 1502 S. Coolidge Ave., died Monday (Sept. 8, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Temple Baptist Church, 1211 Kentucky Ave. S., with Pastor Edward Bard officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Hwy 122 W., Mason City, with military honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, and one hour prior to service time Friday at the church.

The family of Virgil Roy Stump has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Virgil Roy Stump Memorial Fund in his memory.

Virgil Roy Stump was born on Nov. 7, 1923, in Clendenin, W. Va., the son of S.E. and Myrtle (Wilson) Stump. He attended and received his education in the Akron, Ohio school system.

After completing his schooling he did chrome platting in Akron.

Virgil was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps on Feb. 2, 1943, in Fort Hayes, Ohio, and served during World War II until his honorable discharge on Oct. 27, 1945, at Sheppard Field, Texas.

He was united in marriage to Ruth (Whitson) Holt on May 4, 1945, at the Bellville Air Force Base.

After his honorable discharge he moved to Mason City and worked in retail sales for Sam Raizes Department Store in Mason City.

Virgil also worked for Decker & Sons in Mason City in the Bi-Products Department for over 24 years until the plant closed in 1975. After its closing, Virgil worked for various companies until his retirement in 1985.

He loved fishing more than anything else, but he also enjoyed bowling, camping, listening to gospel and country music and eating pie.

He attended Temple Baptist Church, and was a life member of the Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church.

He also was a member of the Mason City Bowling Association, and former member of the Moose Lodge all in Mason City.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Ruth Stump of Mason City; six children, Larry (Laurene) Stump, of Mesa, Ariz., B.K. Potts of Clarksville, Ga., B.G. Kidd of Lorrane, Ore., Tom (Nancy) Stump of Clear Lake, Faye Ranc of Mason City, Jay Stump and his fiancée, Hollie Bates of Mason City; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sister, Francis Dilling of Hayword, Calif.; sister-in-law, Patty Stump of San Leandro, Calif.; many nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and friends.

OSAGE — Florence E. Schwarz, 83, of Osage, and formerly of Granville, passed away Tuesday (Sept. 9, 2003) at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Florence was born March 22, 1920, in Granville, the daughter of Nic and Antonella (Neuhaus) Burlage. She attended school in Granville and worked several years in Denver, Colo., before returning to Granville.

Florence was united in marriage to Joseph Schwarz on Nov. 28, 1946, in Granville, where they made their home.

She worked for the school lunch program at St. Joseph’s and Spalding High School in Granville for many years and then she worked for Harkers in Orange City, for several years, from which she retired.

In 1984, Florence left Granville and moved to Osage.

In April of 2002, she entered the Faith Lutheran Home.

Florence enjoyed her many friends, bus tours and playing cards.

Marlene E. Rasmusson was born June 19, 1927, in Crystal Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Edward W. and Elnora (Johnson) Rasmusson.

Marlene was united in marriage to Charles B. O’Banion and had a daughter, Charlotte. They were married for 20 years until Charles’ death.

Marlene later married James F. Wallace, and they were married for 30 years until his death.

Marlene worked in several bakeries, was a restaurant worker, and most recently retired from Goodwill after 10 years.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, and was a former member of the Mason City VFW Auxiliary.

Marlene enjoyed crafts, especially making them for her family.

She was also an excellent baker and is remembered by her grandchildren for her special pancakes.

Marlene is survived by her daughter, Charlotte (O’Banion) Galkin and her husband, Charles, of Mason City; her grandchildren, Dawn Busick, of Mason City, Charles Galkin and wife, Carrie, of Mason City, and Brenda Reich and her husband, Steve, of Quasqueton, Iowa. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and her brothers, Kenneth Rasmusson of Mason City, Delmon Rasmusson and his wife Bonnie of Minnesota, Mearle Rasmusson and wife Linda of Algona, and Calvin Rasmusson and his wife Leann of Mason City; and an aunt, Clara Kuntz of Missouri. Marlene was also a favorite aunt of many nieces and nephews.

She graduated from Northwood-Kensett High School in 1975. Dawn attended Waldorf College in Forest City, and Buena Vista College in Mason City.

Dawn married Warren Steenhard on April 20, 1996, at First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

She was previously employed at Rockwell International, Alexander Manufacturing and Minnesota Rubber.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eldon and Ellen Buehrer; and father-in-law, Engelard Steenhard.

FRANCIS W. SLEPICKA


CROFTON, Md. — Frank Slepicka, 77, a retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and U.S. Postal Service manager, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Saturday (Sept. 6, 2003). He lived in Crofton, Md.

Mr. Slepicka was born in Mason City. He graduated from Holy Family School in Mason City, Loras College in Dubuque, and attended the Theological College of the Catholic University of America. He was the organist for the choirs at these schools. He received an MBA from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Mr. Slepicka enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and then entered Officer Candidate School. In the USAF, he was an investigator in the Office of Special Investigations in Germany and a Computer Management Specialist at Mather AFB, Calif. and at Suitland, Md. He received a Bronze Star for his work in Vietnam and a Meritorious Service Medal.

In 1972, Mr. Slepicka retired and began a second career at the U.S. Postal Service, where he started in the Inspector’s Office and then moved to the Equal Employment Office.

He retired in 1994, and since then has traveled several times to England, Scotland, Ireland, and Italy.

His hobbies were reading (especially spy novels) and music.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Kathleen Slepicka, of the Washington, D.C. area; one brother, Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka, of Clear Lake, Iowa ; three daughters, Antonia Antonucci, Paula Hovan, and Stephanie Shipp; and four grandchildren, Rick Antonucci, David Hovan, and Sarah and Rachel Shipp, all of the Washington, D.C. area. RED OAK — Mary Margaret Dutcher, the daughter of Roy B. and Marcella Denise (Gordon) Hall was born April 23, 1941, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. She died on Tuesday (Sept. 9, 2003) after a short illness at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa, at the age of 62 years, four months and 17 days.

Mary lived in Eagle Grove until the age of 14, when her family moved to Mason City, Iowa. She graduated from Mason City High School in l959.

Mary attended Mason City Junior College, graduating from Iowa Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls.

She was united in marriage to Tom Dutcher on June 6, 1964, at Mason City. She taught school in various northern Iowa communities until moving to Red Oak in l976.

Mary taught Home Economics at the Red Oak Middle School and was the FHA advisor for many years. She also taught classes for Southwestern Community College in Red Oak and worked part time with the Montgomery County Family YMCA.

Mary was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, having served on the church council several terms.

She was active with organizations such as; Touchstone, Jazzercise, Book Club, and judging exhibits at county fairs in Southwestern Iowa and Eastern Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers in infancy.

Mary is survived by two daughters, Leslie Dutcher of New York, N.Y. and Allison Ruhl and husband, Kevin, of Red Oak, Iowa; a granddaughter, Kaitlyn; and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Red Oak, with the Rev. Dr. George Hooper officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery

Visitation with the family present will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home.
