CHARLES CITY — Evelyn J. Bartz, 86, of Charles City, died Tuesday (Nov. 25, 2003) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with the Rev. David Werges officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

KANAWHA — Thomas “Tobe” Carlson, 82, of Kanawha, died Tuesday (Nov. 25, 2003) at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church with Dr. John Meyer and Janelle Siffring, AiM, officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

IOWA FALLS — Orville N. Gaulke, 98, of Iowa Falls, died Monday (Nov. 24, 2003) at the Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services will be 10:30 Friday at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Brian King officiating. Burial will follow at the Morgan Township Cemetery, Franklin County.

RUTH JENSEN HICKOK


BUFFALO CENTER —Ruth Jensen Hickok died Sunday (Nov. 23, 2003) at the Titonka Care Center, Titonka.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Buffalo Center Methodist Church.

Agnes B. Anderson was born in New York City on Aug. 25, 1912. She was placed in The Brooklyn Nursery & Infants Hospital as a toddler.

In 1917, The Christian Aid Society brought her to Forest City as part of the Orphan Train movement. She arrived in Forest City on Oct. 9, 1917, and was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Jensen. Her name was changed at that time to Ruth Agnes Jensen.

Ruth attended Forest City schools. She married Orville Hickok of Hayfield in 1931. Orville’s employment with the Rock Island Railroad necessitated their move to various Iowa communities, including Hayfield, Oelwein and Washington.

Upon Orville’s retirement from the railroad in 1952, the couple moved to Buffalo Center and took up farming on a Jensen family farm, from which they retired in 1972.

After Orville’s death, Ruth lived at Prairie View Retirement Apartments in Garner for a number of years, and for the last four years had been at the Titonka Care Center.

Ruth was passionate about her Orphan Train experience and presented programs about it to more than 50 schools and various groups. She was the subject of numerous newspaper articles and seven books about the Orphan Train.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Orville, in 1991; her parents; and three brothers, Robert, Raymond, and Paul.

She is survived by a son, Jerry and his wife, JoAnn, of West Des Moines; and a daughter, Carolyn and her husband, Dennis Hackbart, of Little Rock, Ark. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Karen Hickok Gantz of Polk City, Marilyn Hickok of West Des Moines, Pamela Hackbart Dean of Covington, Ga. and Mike Hackbart of Little Rock, Ark.; and two great-grandchildren, Patrick and Benjamin Dean, as well as host of family and friends.

RONALD EDWARD JANKE


NORTHWOOD — Ronald Edward Janke, 48, of Northwood, died Sunday (Nov. 23, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

He was born April 14, 1955, in Mankato, Minn., the son of Eldon and Ruth (Johnson) Janke.

Ronald graduated from Owatonna High School in 1973. He served two years in the U.S. Air Force. After a medical discharge he attended Faribault Technical College where he studied drafting.

He worked as a draftsman for Gull Engineering in Minnetonka for more than 20 years.

He married Debbie Varner Jan. 10, 2003.

Ronald enjoyed hunting, fishing, pool, woodworking, guns and his dog, Patches.

Ronald is survived by his wife, Debbie Varner Janke, of Northwood; stepdaughter, Jami Trapp, of Mason City; stepsons, Fred (and Sue) Varner of Kensett, Danny Varner and Matt Varner, both of Northwood; brother, Donald (and Patricia) Janke of Northfield, Minn.; sisters, Irene “Reni” (and Duane) Lennon of Owatonna and Tami (and Michael) Kristo of Rochester, Minn.; brothers-in-law, Jim (and Tina) Prince and Steve Prince, both of Kensett; also many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.


Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna, with the Rev. Nancy Edwardson of Moland Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Merton Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Michaelson Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.

THOMAS ‘TOBE’ EDWIN CARLSON


KANAWHA — Thomas Edwin “Tobe” Carlson, 82, of Kanawha, died Tuesday (Nov. 25, 2003) at the Trinity Re-gional Medical Center in Fort Dodge.

Funeral services for “Tobe” Carlson will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kana-wha Lutheran Church with Dr. John Meyer and Janelle Siffring, associate in ministry, officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Friends may greet the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home, 118 E. Second St., and one hour prior to services.

Tobe, the son of Tom and Charlotte Johnson Carlson, was born Dec. 1, 1920, near Renwick. He grew up in the Renwick area, where he attended country school.

At the age of 12, Tobe mov-ed with his family to the farm south of Denhart, where he finished his education and helped his father with the farming.

Tobe was drafted into the Army Air Corps in August of 1942 and then joined the in-fantry so he could go overseas.

After serving in the Army for nearly four years, Tobe was discharged in March of 1946 and returned home to the Kanawha area to farm with his dad.

He later moved with his father and brothers to the Cresco area, where they farmed for nearly 20 years. He returned to Kanawha in 1977.

Tobe was a member of the VFW, and enjoyed playing cribbage and watching his favorite baseball team, the Cardinals.

Tobe is survived by his brothers and sisters: Marie Minor of Clarion, Donald R. Carlson and his wife, Marian, of Watertown, Wis., Harold “Jim” Carlson of Kanawha, Margaret Anderson and her husband, Clarence “Buster” of Kanawha, and Mildred Anderson of North Platte, Neb.; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Carlson of Mason City and Ruby Carlson of Estherville, and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Clifford, George, Leonard, Floyd and Clarence “Beaver.”

MERLE V. SANDER


MASON CITY — Merle V. Sander, 74, of 1131 Manor Drive, died Tuesday (Nov. 25, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Following cremation, private graveside services will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with the Rev. Thomas Healey, chaplain of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating.

The family will greet friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa.

Merle V. Sander was born June 25, 1929, at Des Moines, a son of Hugh and Bonnie (Miller) Sander.

He was united in marriage to Shirley E. Heskett on Aug. 29, 1948, at West Des Moines.

Raised in Des Moines, Merle was a 1947 graduate of Valley High School, West Des Moines. He served in the U.S. Navy as a radio technician, stationed in Guam.

Moving to Mason City in 1963, Merle was an owner-partner of Nora Springs Insurance Agency, Nora Springs, retiring in 1995.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Mason City; daughter, Debbie Carlson and her husband, David, of Elk River, Minn.; two grandchildren, Lance Patterson and his wife, Nicole, of Anoka, Minn., and Wendy Patterson, of Largo, Fla.; one brother, Ronald Sander and his wife, Norma, of Littleton, Colo., and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

CHARLES CITY — Bernice Kloster, 74, of 405 Fifth Ave. in Charles City, died Tuesday (Nov. 25, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane in Charles City, with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

CHARLES CITY — Roy Ritter, 71, of 306 Sixth St., Charles City, died Wednesday (Nov. 26, 2003) at his home.

Funeral services for Roy Ritter will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City, with the Rev. Roy Herman Ritter was born March 12, 1932, at Marble Rock, the son of Clifford and Dorothy (Taylor) Ritter. In 1949, he graduated from Charles City High School.

Roy served in the United States Navy on the USS Midway (CVA-41) during the Korean Conflict.

On Sept. 26, 1953, he was united in marriage to Alice Leinaweaver at Newport, Pa.

After Roy was discharged from the U. S. Navy, he and Alice returned to Charles City where Roy began his 40-year career with Iowa Public Service.

Roy served on the Charles City City Council at the time of the tornado and also was a volunteer fireman.

He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, a charter member of the Floyd County Fish and Game Club, and was instrumental in forming the first animal shelter in Charles City.

He enjoyed golfing with his wife, hunting, traveling, reading westerns, and having coffee at Don’s.

Living family members include his wife of 50 years, Alice of Charles City; three daughters, Pam (Gary) Schwartz of Rockford, Judy (Larry) Gentry of Westminster, Colo., and Danelle (Derek) Clarke of Fridley, Minn.; three grandchildren, Stacey Kehrt, Brian Schwartz, and Devin Gentry; two sisters, Helen VanHorn of Charles City, and Mary (Ed) Shultz of Golden, Colo.; and three brothers, Dean (Barb) Ritter of Apple Valley, Minn., Bill (Sandra) Ritter of Golden Valley, Minn., and Mike (Mick) Ritter of Arvada, Colo.

His parents, a grandson, Ross Gentry; and a sister, Jean Schultz; preceded him in death

MASON CITY — Clement A. Schneider, 73, of 721 N. Jefferson Ave., died Wednesday (Nov. 26, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be at the Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City. Military honors will be by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m. and Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be one hour before services Saturday at the church.

Family suggests memorials to Holy Family Catholic Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Clement was born Dec. 11, 1929, in Kensett, Iowa, the son of Louis and Mary (Dankbar) Schneider. He graduated from Hanlontown High School.

He served in the United States Army and then was a member of the active reserves.

Clement married Darlene Loecher on Sept. 5, 1959, in Stacyville, Iowa. He operated a turkey farm west of Manly until 1960.

He then worked at Armor from 1960 to 1975 and also was a school bus driver for the Manly and Mason City school systems.

He later was employed at Mitchell Transport, then Ruan, from 1975 to 1995.

He enjoyed camping, wintering in the south, collecting caps, and daily visits with the groups at west McDonalds.

Shopping and trading of automobiles was also a lifetime hobby.

He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church; Knights of Columbus and Teamsters 828.

Clement is survived by his wife Darlene, of Mason City; his three children, Karen Vitale, of River Falls, Wis., Mark Schneider and his wife, Michelle, of River Falls, Wis., and Sharon Luehrs and her husband, Jeff, of Apple Valley, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Matthew and Sarah Vitale, Kieran, Kristen, Kelsey Schneider and Nathan and Ryan Luehrs; two brothers Cletus Schneider, of Mason City, and Carl Schneider and his wife, Gay, of Manly; and two sisters, Catherine Weir and her husband, Larry, of Deerfield, Ill., and Corrinne Fenelon, of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister Coleen; sister-in-law, Jane Schneider.

JAMES VERN TENNEY


POMONA, Calif. — James Vern Tenney was born on Feb. 20, 1929, in Rockford, Iowa, and died on Sunday (Nov. 23, 2003) at his home in Pomona.

The first child born to the union of James Carlyle and Inez June Tenney, James grew up in Mason City. He was a 1947 graduate of St. Joseph Catholic High School in Mason City.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1949 and served four years.

He moved to California and in 1953, met his wife to be, Willa Mae Ritch. They were married on Jan. 9, 1954, and would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this January. From this union, two children were born.

James worked as a metal-stud lather/farmer and foreman for 42 years and was a member of Local 42L. He retired in 1992.

He began working as a security guard in 1995 and was currently the Post Commander of Hillcrest Gated Community in Orange.

He had served as a faithful member of the House of Praise Church in La Verne, Calif., since 1985. He was a born-again Christian and a wonderful man to all who crossed his path.

He is survived by his wife, Willa Mae; son, Mark Tenney; daughter, Allyson Telles; five grandchildren, Sabrina, Jessica, Gabriella, Raul Jr. and Christina; one brother, Jerry Tenney, of Goose Creek, S.C.; two sisters, Janet Seely, of Mason City, and Joy Martzahl, of Burchinal; and many more friends and family.

James Vern Tenney, you will be greatly missed Husband, Daddy, Grandpa and Brother, and friend. We love you. Thank you for being the great man you were.

LUVERNE — Harriett A. Schulz, 94, of LuVerne, died Friday (Nov. 28, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Center in Algona.

Charlotte was born Jan. 31, 1938, in Mason City, the daughter of Charles F. “Jack” and Marie (Bernemann) Clark. She went to St. Joseph’s School where she graduated in 1956. She then attended Marquette University for one year and then went to Hamilton College, Mason City.

Charlotte worked for Interstate Power for over 37 years, retiring due to her to health.

She is survived by one brother, Richard (Alice) of Dubuque; and three sisters, Marilyn (Abe) Cimijotti of Ocala, Fla., Karen (Neil) Garlock of Burnsville, Minn., and Kathryn Knutson of Spring Lake Park, Minn.; along with many nieces, nephews and faithful aunts, Gen Walters and Florence Berger. She is also survived by two dear and longtime friends, Sharon Newman and Sandy Hawkins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Maynard Knutson.

She then moved back to the Manly to the farm where she grew up.

She enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers as well as raising livestock on the family farm.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Shirley Herum of Ankeny; two grandsons, Jerry Herum (Celeste Van Syoc) of Des Moines, and Daniel (Wendy) Herum of Indianola; as well as four great-granddaughters, Jessica, Amanda, Amber, and Crystal.

CHARLES CITY - Harvey C. Hilgendorf, 81, of 506 N. Jackson St., Charles City, died early Friday morning (Nov. 28, 2003) at the Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St., Charles City, with the Rev. David Werges officiating. Private inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Harvey Carlton Hilgendorf was born in rural Alta Vista, April 18, 1922, one of four children, to Rudolph and Frieda (Warnke) Hilgendorf. He attended school north of Alma.

On June 29, 1942, Harvey was united in marriage to Dorothy M. Dvorak at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Maple Leaf, Iowa.

In the early 1950s, Harvey owned and operated Harvey's Seed and Feed in Charles City. Since the late 1950s, Harvey had been an Iowa real estate broker.

Harvey had been a member of the St. John Lutheran Church, a 50-year member of both the Elks and Moose Lodge, and Ducks Unlimited, all of Charles City. He was also a life member of the Floyd County Historical Society and a valued member of the Floyd Lions Club.

Harvey's interests and leisure activities included being an avid smallmouth bass fisherman as well as having a great passion for deer and pheasant hunting. He enjoyed cooking and entertaining for family and friends. Harvey was an avid card player and especially liked the game "Euchre." Harvey played golf and had hit a hole-in-one on hole No. 16 at the Country Club in Charles City.

Harvey was very proud of his grandchildren and family. Harvey will be best remembered for being loving, caring and giving of himself.

Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in his life are his wife, Dorothy, of 61 years; his two sons, Jim Hilgendorf and his wife, Judy, of Clear Lake, and Bill Hilgendorf and his wife, Mary, of Zephyr Cove, Nev.; two grandchildren, Darcy Hilgendorf, of Hamburg, N.J., and David Hilgendorf, of Ames; one sister, Irma Ellner, of Waterloo; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Viola was born Jan. 16, 1914, in Hartland, Minn., the daughter of Ole and Helena (Hagen) Newgard. When she was four years old, she moved to the Edmore, N.D., area, where she attended Overland Township School. She later graduated from Edmore High School, Valley City North Dakota State Teachers College and Drake University.

Viola married F. Neil Puhl on May 24, 1941, in Devils Lake, N.D. They lived in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Spencer and Creston, Iowa, before moving to Mason City in 1949.

Viola taught school for 28 years, beginning in Ramsey County and Crary Schools in North Dakota. In Iowa, she taught at the Lime Creek No. 8 School (Sugar Beet School) in Cerro Gordo County and at Lincoln, Wilson, McKinley and Harding schools in Mason City. Viola retired in 1978.

She moved to Conrad in August of 2002.

Viola was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association, and was a life member of the Iowa State Teachers Association.

Viola enjoyed crafts, needle-work, fishing, cooking, travel, music and dancing, but her favorite pastime was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Viola is survived by her husband, Neil, of Conrad; daughter, Frances Hermanson and husband, Paul, of Marshalltown; daughter-in-law, Dr. Susan Puhl, of Iowa City; four grandchildren: Elizabeth Ohland, of Iowa City, Dr. John Hermanson and wife, Patty, of Marshalltown, Jacob Puhl and wife, Jennifer, of Fargo, N.D., and Mary Greff and husband, Andrew, of Austin, Texas; and six great-grandchildren: Morgan, Rebecca and Anna Ohland, Noah Hermanson, Isabelle Puhl and Elizabeth Greff. Viola also regarded as her family Colleen and Gary Christiansen and their children, Erin and Michael. She also is survived by a sister- in-law, Floretta Newgard, of Edmore, N.D.

WILHELM 'WILLIE' FRIEDSAM


CHARLES CITY - Wilhelm "Willie" Friedsam, 81, a resident of 810 Ninth Street, Charles City, was received to glory on Nov. 28, 2003.

Funeral services for Willie Friedsam will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Floyd. Rev. Paul Phillips, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Wilhelm Julius Friedsam was born April 12, 1922, at Sibiu, Romania, the son of Wilhelm and Therese (Sonn-leitner) Friedsam. He re-ceived his education in Romania where he also attended business school.

At the age of 17, Willie accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior and was baptized. He would, throughout his life, endeavor to serve his Lord.

On Dec. 10, 1950, he was united in marriage to Katharina Schmahl in Salzburg, Austria. Through the sponsorship of Dr. and Mrs. J. E. Salsbury and the First Baptist Church of Charles City, it was made possible for them to come and start a new be-ginning in Charles City in 1955. They lived with Dr. and Mrs. Salsbury for three years before moving to their own home.

Willie worked in the Pharmaceutical Production Department of Salsbury Laboratories.

He was a member of the Gospel Lighthouse Church, the Senior Citizens Center, YMCA Fountain of Youth, and had served as a Hospice volunteer. Willie always took special interest in attending community affairs.

He always desired to serve his Lord and did so by participating in the services or functions of many of the churches in Charles City.

Willie will always be re-membered for his willingness to use his musical talents in playing the violin. The violin always went with him and he was always ready to play and share a meditation.

Living family members include his wife, Katharina Friedsam, of Charles City; a brother, Johannes (Dorothea) Friedsam, of Holzgerlingen, Germany; four sisters: Gertrude (Martin) Krafft, of Leonberg, Germany, Adelheid (Friedrich) Teutsch, of Sindel-fingen, Germany, Anneliese Friedsam, of Holzgerlingen, Germany, and Hedwig Friedsam, of Leonberg, Germany; a brother-in-law, John Schmaehl, of Kamiah, Idaho; a niece, Brigitte (Philipp) Roland, of Osage; a nephew, Harty (Marjorie) Schmaehl, of Kamiah, Idaho; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents and a brother, Otto Friedsam, preceded him in death.

MASON CITY - Dale L. Northrup, 74, of 2023 S. Wilson Ave., Mason City, died Thursday (Nov. 27, 2003) at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 23 Second St. S.E., Mason City. Officiating will be Rev. Kathy Graves of Hospice of North Iowa. Dale was born on Dec. 22, 1928, in Springville, Iowa, the son of Fred and Catherine "Zebie" Northrup. He attended schools in Cedar Rapids and Troy Mills, Iowa. Following school, he entered the Army from 1946 until 1947 when he was honorably discharged from stateside service.

On Feb. 14, 1949, he was united in marriage to Anna Shunkwiler in Cedar Rapids. To this union was born five children. They moved to Mason City in 1969 where they have made their permanent home.

Dale worked for Allied Mills in maintenance for 22 years and retired in 1990.

He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved playing practical jokes on family and friends. The more outrageous the joke, the better. He enjoyed singing while playing the guitar and liked to yodel. He also was on several bowling teams over the years and liked beating his opponents in cribbage. Dale also enjoyed woodworking and carving, fishing area rivers and his trips to Minnesota near Brainerd.

As a young man, he attended the Methodist Church.

Those thankful for sharing Dale's life include his wife of 54 years, Anna; one daughter, DaleAnn and her husband, Russell Dusheck, of Mason City; three sons: Mark North-rup, of Mason City, Jeffrey and his wife, Lori Northrup, of Vancouver, Wash., and Terry Northrup, of Cedar Falls; his daughter-in-law, Sandy, the wife of the late Brian Northrup, of Mason City; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandsons; two sisters, Violet and her husband, Karl Massey, of Lisbon, and Mae Corstien, of Cedar Rapids; one brother, Paul Northrup, of Marian; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Stanley Kermit Ellwood was born June 3, 1926, on a farm near Radcliffe, to Gustav and Torina (Olson) Ellwood. He was the fifth of six children, whose mother died when Stanley was two and a half years old. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Ellsworth. He graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1943. He then worked for area farmers.

Stanley married Ardis Mostrom on Dec. 28, 1950, at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church in Kensett. The couple made their home on a farm in Story County for the first five years of their marriage. Stanley was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1956. This necessitated his retirement and the family's move to Forest City in January of 1957.

On March 20, 1978, Stanley entered the Good Samaritan Center where he lived until his passing on Nov. 28, 2003.

He is survived by his wife, Ardis; four daughters: Jane (Jerry) Askeland, of Mason City, Julie (Bob) Winberg, of Andover, Minn., Janet (Patrick) Cannon, of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Joan (Dave) Hickman, of Mason City; and their children, Erik and Bret Askeland, Rob and Paul Winberg, Kevin, Sean and Molly Cannon and Kristen and Matt Hickman; Stanley's brothers, Reuben, of Ellsworth, and Richard (Doris), of Radcliffe and Sun City, Ariz.; and his sisters, Trudy O'Dell, of Yucaipa, Calif. and Mildred (Tony) Angello, of Victorville, Calif.

ROBERT C. THOMPSON, M.D.


CLEAR LAKE - Robert C. Thompson, M.D., 5073 South Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died of pulmonary lung cancer at his home on Friday (Nov. 28, 2003). The cancer had been diagnosed on Oct. 16.

He was born on March 12, 1946, in Cedar Rapids. His parents were John and Ruth Thompson.

Bob attended the University of Iowa and graduated in 1972 as a doctor of medicine with a specialty in family practice. He began his career in Eldora, and for the past 16 years has been practicing Family Medicine in Grundy Center until his retirement on Oct. 16, 2003. He devoted his life to his family, his practice and his patients.

Bob and Diane Tjaden Thompson were married on July 25, 1975. Their children are Bradley and Anne Marie (Aggie).

Other surviving family members are: Eric Budreau, Doug and Linda Thompson and family, Joni Thompson and family, Tim and Andy Tjaden, Susan and Dick Breed, and Marian Tjaden.

The family will greet friends Monday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at their home at 5073 South Shore Drive in Clear Lake.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center.

Memorials may be directed to the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Foundation in Grundy Center or the North Iowa Hospice in Mason City.

JOHN N. BRONES


MASON CITY - John N. Brones, 68, of Mason City, died Tuesday (Nov. 25, 2003) at his home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be two hours prior to services at the church.

John Nelson Brones, the son of Alfred G. and Ida (Bartleson) Brones, was born Nov. 13, 1935, on a farm northeast of Forest City. He attended country school near Forest City and St. Ansgar. John graduated from Charles City High School in 1954.

He served his country during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Army being stationed in Germany. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Charles City where he was employed at Oliver-White.

He was married to Rosemary Pagel. The couple lived in Cannon Falls, Minn. For the past two years, he lived in Mason City.

He enjoyed tractors and woodworking. He was a member of SIG (Singles In Agriculture).

John is survived by three brothers and a sister: George Brones and his wife, Norma, of Denver, Colo., Donald Brones and his wife, Laura, of Denver, Colo., Charlotte Thorland-Oulman and her husband, Dick, of Thompson, and Allen Brones and his wife, Billie, of Arvada, Colo. Also surviving are seven stepchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; two aunts, Eva and Carrie Bartleson, both of Forest City; a brother-in-law, Merle Hendrickson, of Mason City; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Edith Rausch and her husband, Bob, and Geneva Hendrickson.
