ELEANOR M. HOVELL

MANLY - Eleanor M. Hovell, 86, of 337 E. Main St. in Manly, died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. David G. Kucera, officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St. in Manly, with with a 6 p.m. Scriptural wake service.

Memorials may be direct-ed to Eleanor M. Hovell Memorial Fund in care of P.O.Box 424, Manly, IA 50456.

Eleanor Maurine, the daughter of Albert and Selma (Holeman) Hoveland, was born Dec. 8, 1916, in Blue Earth, Minn.

At a young age, she moved with her parents to Mason City, where she received her education from the Mason City school system.

She was united in marriage to Joseph J. Hovell Jr. on Dec. 31, 1937, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly.

Eleanor worked as a waitress at the Park Inn at Mason City, as well as a housekeeper for the Percy family.

She moved to California in the early 1940's to be near her husband and four brothers who served in World War II.

While in California, she worked as a waitress and lived with Albin and Mary Yezek, who were also from Manly.

After the war, she and her husband moved back to Manly. He worked in his father's family business and with the Rock Island Railroad and she was a dedicated home-maker.

Eleanor's greatest love was spending time with her family. She also loved to travel and was ready to go at the drop of a hat. Walking, gardening, and cooking were also some of her favorite pastimes.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Manly, a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Manly, and the VFW Auxiliary of Northwood.

Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Carol Ann Ryan and her husband, Daniel, of Manly; grandchildren, Shelly and her husband, Mark Johnson, of Manly, Tracy and her husband, Joseph Ollendick, of Grimes, William and his wife, Linnea Ryan, of Algonquin, Ill., Anthony and his wife, Michelle Ryan, of Muscatine, and Joseph and his wife, Connie Ryan, of Manly. Also surviving are her great-grandchildren, Tyler and Jesse Johnson of Manly, Will Ollendick of Grimes, Jorie and Elizabeth Ryan of Algonquin, Ill., and Abby Ryan of Muscatine; three brothers, Ervin and Walter Hoveland, both of Mason City, and LaVerne and his wife, Mona Hoveland, of Urbandale.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph J. Hovell Jr. in February of 1979; and four brothers: an infant brother, Raymond, Arnold and Marvin.

BUFFALO CENTER - Evert Swalve, 83, of Buffalo Center, died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2003) at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center, with the Rev. Perry Aalgaard and the Rev. Paul Haugen officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

MASON CITY - Gladys Edna Tesene, 90 of rural Mason City died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Tom Healey, Hospice of North Iowa chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, rural Rockwell.

Gladys was born, July 14, 1913, at Swaledale, the daugh-ter of Louis F. and Edna Mary (England) Kruggel.

She graduated from Swaledale High School and attended Iowa State Teacher's College, Cedar Falls, where she received her teaching certificate.

Gladys was married to Walter K. Tesene on June 4, 1932, in Nashua. She lived in Swaledale for 18 years and rural Clear Lake for 72 years.

Gladys was a member of the Home Improvement Club, Swaledale Federated Garden Club, CCIC Club, DD Club and Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.

She is survived by daughter, Nadine Drennan and husband, Bill, of New Sharon; son, David Tesene and wife, Jan, of Manhattan, Kan.; daughter, Leanne Teachey and husband, Doyle, of Hilliard, Fla.; daughter, Jay Tesene, of Carson City, Nev.; grandchildren, David and Abby Tesene, of Manhattan, Kan., Brian and Lorraine Tesene, of Manhattan, Kan., Kathleen and Kelly Allen, of Seattle, Wash., Heather Drennan and James Bowles, of Seattle, Wash., Mike and Denise Moss, of Council Bluffs, Judy Moss, of Washington, DC, Suzanne and Tim Hightower, of Spearfish, S.D., Kris and Carter Baldwin, of Cedar Rapids, Angie Sturm, of South Lake Tahoe, Nev., Thomas Sturm, of Omaha, Neb.; great-grandchildren, Wesley Tesene, Michael Tesene, Rachel Tesene, Aza Allen, Bella Allen, Avery Drennan, Milo Bowles, Finn Bowles, Caleb Hightower, Samantha Hightower, Jaden Hightower, Corey Baldwin and Kayli Baldwin; sister, Peggy S. MARJORIE MYRA KINGSTON KADUCE


CINCINNATI, Ohio - Marjorie M. Kaduce, 84, 319 Locust, Cincinnati, Ohio, died Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) where she shared her home with her daughter, Georgia.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 31, at the Hodapp Funeral Home, 7401 Vine St. in Cincinnati.

The family received relatives and friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Marjorie was born to Martha and Alonzo Liffick on Feb. 27, 1919, in Terre Haute, Ind.

She married Joseph I. Kingston in Mount Vernon, Ind., in 1935. To this union 13 children were born, Georgia (Myles) Shepherd, of Cincinnati, Merlin (Pauline) King-ston, of Elizabeth City, N.J., Wilma (Rodney) Stromley, of Minnesota, Delores (James) Dodge, of Mason City, William (Pat) Kingston, of Northwood, James (Sue) Kingston, of Mason City, Martha Duty, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Kenneth (Kathy) Kingston, of Bellbrook, Ohio, and Steven King-ston, of Clear Lake.

On Aug. 17, 1957, she married Edward Kaduce and had two children, Edward Kaduce, of Nebraska and Debra Kaduce, of Dayton, Ohio.

Marjorie was a very caring person who worked at many nursing homes in Ohio, Nora Springs, and Mason City, Iowa.

She had a great love for dogs and cats. She also wrote cat stories for her grandchildren.

She will be sadly missed by a host of family and friends; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and great-great-great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Harold Watson, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Burial will be at a later date in Mason City, Iowa.

BELMOND — H. Delilah Bailey, 91, most recently a resident of the Westview Care Center in Leon, Iowa, and formerly a longtime resident of Belmond, died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 2003) at the care center in Leon.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Belmond United Methodist Church, 1031 First St. S.E. in Belmond. The Rev. Michael Druhl will officiate. Burial will be in the Lincoln Township Cemetery in Leon.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First Street S.E. in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Saturday.

The family suggests mem-orials to the Alzheimer’s Association, American Heart Association, Belmond United Methodist Church or the donor’s choice.

Harriet Delilah Bucy was born Jan. 9, 1912, in her parents’ home in Hubbard, the daughter of Isaac and Lillian (Clancy) Bucy. She spent her childhood in Hubbard and graduated from Hubbard High School. She later attend-ed what is now Iowa State University for one year.

Delilah was united in marriage to Enlow “Ben” Guy Bailey on Dec. 3, 1932, at her parents’ home in Hubbard. Following their marriage, they made their first home in Des Moines, then spent 12 years in Fort Dodge and 12 years in Marathon, Iowa, before moving to Belmond, where they made their home for 40 years.

Mr. Bailey was employed by Helland and Long Implement. Delilah was a life long homemaker, devoted wife and wonderful mother. Her family was the joy of her life.

She had worked in retail for a number of years. Her last employment was with the Redder Drug Store in Belmond.

Delilah and her husband, Ben, were very much devoted to their family and each other. They enjoyed following the many activities of their children and grandchildren. Delilah looked forward to times spent with her grandchildren as much as they looked forward to visiting and staying at grandpa and grand-ma’s from time to time.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star during her years in Marathon, and belonged to the PEO organization in Belmond.

She and her husband were longtime members of the Belmond United Methodist Church, and Delilah had been active in the UMCW.

She loved to play bridge, enjoyed reading, and was an excellent cook and housekeeper. She will be remembered as a great friend to many and life partner of 67 years with her husband.

She and Ben enjoyed traveling, and had been to Mexico on several occasions and to Europe. Following Ben’s re-tirement, they spent nearly 20 years wintering in Kissee Mills, Mo. They also very much enjoyed dancing throughout most of their life.

Following her husband’s death in 1999, Delilah had lived for periods of time with both of her daughters and then for the past two and one-half years at the care center in Leon.

During her time in Leon, she attended the Leon Bible Church.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her two daughters, Diane and Gordie Anderson, of Lake View, Ark., and Marcia and Wayne Holder, of Leon; she adored her four grandsons, Scott Allan and Carrie Anderson, Kevin Lee and Debra Anderson, Todd Gordon and Faith Anderson, and Mark and Tonia Dorr; great-grandchildren, Christopher and Chloe Dorr, Nolan and Rosalyn Anderson, Spencer and Riley Diane Anderson, and Izaak and Lucas Anderson; also nephews, Craig P. Bucy and wife, Vivian, Dr. James G. Bucy and wife, Jane, Jerry Bailey and wife, Norma, and Bruce Voogd; nieces, Charyl Bowman and husband, Richard, Sandra Stephenson, and Kay and Wayne Willette.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 67 years, E.G. “Ben” Bailey; and her brother and his wife, Dr. Paul C. Bucy and Evelyn.

Irene Ruth Stowe was born Aug. 2, 1919, in Klemme, to William and Ida (Schwichtenberg) Nuehring. Irene was baptized and confirmed at the Rockwell United Methodist Church. She attended rural country school in Cerro Gordo County. Irene graduated from Rockwell High School in 1937.

On Jan. 7, 1942, Irene was united in marriage to Otto W. Stowe at the United Methodist Church in Rockwell. The couple became the proud parents of four children.

Irene will be well-remembered by many people in Mason City as she was an office assistant for seven years at Mason City Community Schools and was also employed part-time at Kembles Flowers.

She found great enjoyment throughout her life tending to flowers and plants at her home and at work. Irene was a past assistant superintendent in the floral department of the North Iowa Fair and a former member of the Mason City Garden Club.

Irene was devoted to her Christian faith. She was a member of the Rockwell United Methodist Church and also attended the First Covenant Church in Mason City. She was an active member of her Women’s Fellowship Group and a Bible school and Sunday school teacher.

Irene took great pride in nurturing her family. She is lovingly remembered as a woman who treasured family gatherings, reunions and spending quality time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her children recall special thoughts of Irene’s decorated cakes, her excellent Christmas sugar cookies and her beautifully hand-painted sugar Easter eggs. They think of her fondly as a very loving and caring person who was always willing to assist anyone in any way.

Some of Irene’s favorite leisure activities and interests included collecting miniature treasures, treating herself to ice cream sundaes, playing bingo, canning, and attending auctions and garage sales.

Irene will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Carole Luse and her husband, John, of Osage, Betty Zern and her husband, Robert, of Conrad, Willis Stowe and his wife, Dorothy, of Seaside Park, N.J., and Kurtis Stowe and his wife, Jan, of Rockford; one sister, Hilda Hodge, of Mason City; one brother, Lester Nuehring and his wife, Marjorie, of Mason City; one sister-in-law, Jeanette Nuehring, of Mason City; and one brother-in-law, Gerald Angell, of Overland Park, Kan.

Irene will also be sadly missed by her nine grandchildren: Julie Metz, Willis Stowe Jr., Tara Yarbrough, Erin Feingold, Jamie Stowe, Chad Stowe, Paul Zern, David Zern and Debra Sharp, along with six step-grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered by numerous other relatives and many friends.

Preceding Irene in death were her husband, Otto, in March of 1979; her parents, William and Ida; three sisters, Evelyn Johnson Gaffri, Janett Angell and Elsie Peterson, and two brothers, Alvin and Elmer Nuehring.

NORTHWOOD — Robert D. Hoelscher, 74, of Northwood and formerly of Waseca, Minn., died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 2003) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Robert D. Hoelscher was born Sept. 13, 1929, in Eldora, to John and Irene (Simonson) Hoelscher.

He served his nation in the Army during the Korean Conflict from January 1951 through May 1953, obtaining the rank of S.F.C.

Robert married Marjorie Christenson on Dec. 31, 1956, in Dodge Center, Minn.

He was a retired farmer and worked at EF Johnson Co. in Waseca for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Northwood; his mother, Irene Janssen, of Spirit Lake; three sons, Reece and his wife, Shirley, of Man-kato, Minn., Dale and his wife, Robin, of Janesville, Minn., and Mark and his wife, Cora, of Kensett; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two step-brothers, and one step-sister.

He was preceded in death by his father and step-father.

GRENADA, Miss. — Delbert “Junebug” Perrin, 79, of Grenada, Miss., and formerly of the Mason City and Clear Lake areas, died Friday (Sept. 19, 2003) at St. Dominics Hospital in Jackson, Miss., due to heart failure.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at St. Peters Catholic Church in Grenada with the Rev. Thomas Delaney officiating. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Grenada.

Irene was devoted to her Christian faith. She was a member of the Rockwell United Methodist Church and also attended the First Covenant Church in Mason City. She was an active member of her Women’s Fellowship Group and a Bible school and Sunday school teacher.

Irene took great pride in nurturing her family. She is lovingly remembered as a woman who treasured family gatherings, reunions and spending quality time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her children recall special thoughts of Irene’s decorated cakes, her excellent Christmas sugar cookies and her beautifully hand-painted sugar Easter eggs. They think of her fondly as a very loving and caring person who was always willing to assist anyone in any way.

Some of Irene’s favorite leisure activities and interests included collecting miniature treasures, treating herself to ice cream sundaes, playing bingo, canning, and attending auctions and garage sales.

Irene will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Carole Luse and her husband, John, of Osage, Betty Zern and her husband, Robert, of Conrad, Willis Stowe and his wife, Dorothy, of Seaside Park, N.J., and Kurtis Stowe and his wife, Jan, of Rockford; one sister, Hilda Hodge, of Mason City; one brother, Lester Nuehring and his wife, Marjorie, of Mason City; one sister-in-law, Jeanette Nuehring, of Mason City, and one brother-in-law, Gerald Angell, of Overland Park, Kan.

Irene will also be sadly missed by her nine grandchildren: Julie Metz, Willis Stowe Jr., Tara Yarbrough, Erin Feingold, Jamie Stowe, Chad Stowe, Paul Zern, David Zern and Debra Sharp, along with six step-grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered by numerous other relatives and many friends.

BELMOND — Luella H. Bohning, 96, a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond, died Monday (Nov. 3, 2003) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the at the Belmond United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Druhl officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. in Belmond, and continue one hour prior to the services on Sunday at the church.

Luella H. (Rabey) Bohning was born July 27, 1907, on her parents’ farm near Wedrow, Ill., the daughter of William and Fedelia (Hite) Rabey. When she was age 4, she moved with her parents to a farm near Belmond, Iowa.

Luella attended rural schools and Belmond High School, graduating with the Class of 1924. Following graduation, she taught in rural schools near Belmond for five years.

On June 23, 1930, she was united in marriage to Peter S. Bohning at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. After their marriage, they made their home on a farm near Belmond.

To this union were born three children, Shirley, Daryl and Donald. They moved to a home in Belmond in December of 1963.

In addition to helping her husband with the farming operation when they lived on the farm, Luella was a lifelong homemaker. She was a wonderful wife and mother.

She enjoyed traveling, reading and playing various types of games. Her family was the thing she cherished the most.

Luella loved to visit with her friends and always kept in contact with others through cards and letters.

She was a longtime member of the Belmond United Methodist Church, the Belmond Grandmothers Club and the Rebecca Circle.

Luella was preceded in death by her husband on June 23, 1970. After his death, she continued to live on her own until becoming a resident of the care center in July 2000.

Those whom she leaves to cherish the memory of her life include her daughter, Shirley E. Borreson, of Sturgeon Lake, Minn.; a son, Daryl E. Bohning and wife, Sue Ellen, of Warren, Conn.; three grandsons, Scott Joseph Bohning, of Berkeley, Calif., Phillip Frederick Bohning, of New Jersey, and Peter Alexander Bohning at home with his parents, along with several nieces and nephews.

Anna Escherich was born Aug. 9, 1909, in Winnebago County, the daughter of Olai and Engel (Nordhus) Arnevik. She was baptized and confirmed at North Prairie Lutheran Church west of Lake Mills.

On March 23, 1938, she was united in marriage to Reuben Escherich in Northwood, Iowa. They had seven children that she loved caring and cooking for. Reuben pass-ed away on July 14, 1985, and after that, she moved to Em-mons, Minn.

Anna was a special person, not only to her family but to everyone that has ever known her. She always put family and friends before her own needs.

She was always willing to give a helping hand when needed and was never known or heard to complain about anything. She was a kind and considerate woman and a true lady in every sense of the word, and she was always there to help others. She will be missed by ALL.

Anna is survived by her children, Wayne Escherich of Siloam Springs, Ark., Donald and his wife Barbara Escherich, of Mason City, Dianne and her husband James Sorenson, of Britt, Susan and her husband, Kyle Helmick, of Hot Springs, Ark., Reuben Jr. and his wife, Linda Escherich, of Clear Lake, and Lyle and his wife, Deb Escherich, of Clear Lake; 12 grandchildren: Randy Escherich, Brian Escherich, James Escherich, Daniel Escherich, Marianne Dinges, Gentry Sorenson, Heather Sorenson, Nikki Sorenson, Rory Helmick, Robert Esch-erich, Darci Escherich and Devan Helgeson; 14 great-grandchildren; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Henry LeRoy Ehrhardt, the son of Kenneth and Betty (Henriksen) Ehrhardt, was born June 14, 1949, at Esther-ville. He grew up in Belmond where he attended school. On June 26, 1967, he married Diane Martie at Manly. They were married for 16 years. They lived in Mason City, where Henry was employed in construction. In 1984, he moved to Marshalltown and operated a small-engine business with his brother, Wayne. He enjoyed his family, music, playing guitar and being a mechanic.

Henry is survived by his children, Dawn Gayken and husband, Todd, and their son, Keaton, of Britt; David Ehr-hardt and fiancée, Jill Trainer, of Northwood, and his daughter, Sydney of Marshalltown, and Jill's two daughters, Courtney and Kati of Northwood, and Nicole Walters of Clinton; step-children, Grechet Walters and her children, Johnny, Ryan and Destiny, all of Marshalltown, and Travis Walters of Marshalltown; his father, Kenneth Ehrhardt and wife, Wilma, of Cedar Falls; brothers Wayne Ehr-hardt and wife, Chris, of Marshalltown, and Russell Ehrhardt and wife, Barb, of Manly; and several nieces and nephews.

Alfred was born on Aug. 30, 1909, to Fred and Christina (Smith) Pitzen. His marriage of 67 years to Mary Reding began on Sept. 2, 1936, at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville.

Alfred farmed his entire life, retiring to Stacyville in 1978. He always had an active part in farming, even after his retirement. In his retirement he enjoyed woodworking and traveling. He also loved watch-ing his grandchildren in sports activities.

Alfred was very involved with 4-H, serving as a leader for many years. The county fair was a very special part of his life as well as his family's lives.

Alfred was a 75-year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, was an Iowa Holstein member, a Farm Bureau member, was a board member of the ASCS and received the Distinguished Holstein Service Award.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Mary, of Stacyville; two sons, Gene (Jane) Pitzen of Stacyville and Ronnie (Becky) of Stacyville; four daughters, Mary Jane (Jim) Mauer of Lisle, Ill., Betty Ann (Marly) Stoltenberg of Mason City, Carol (Vaughn) Rossum of Osage, and Rosalie (Doug) Malo of Brookings. Maxine E. McCauley was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Spencer to Oliver and Jennie (Dennis) Weber. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1937. Following high school, she worked at Como Photo in Mason City.

On Jan. 31, 1946, Maxine was united in marriage to James P. McCauley in Spencer. The couple became the parents of two daughters.

The family lived in several communities, including Elkader, Postville and McGregor, due to Jim's employment with the railroad. They moved to Mason City in 1968.

Maxine was a life-long home-maker, devoted wife and wonderful mother. She was an avid reader and loved to discuss just about any topic you wanted to talk about. Maxine enjoyed other busy hobbies such as writing, crocheting and painting.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her two daughters, Linda Boelman and her husband, Stan, and Carol Flaherty and her husband, Tom, all of Mason City. She will be sadly missed by her four grandchildren, Michelle Boelman, Steve Boelman, Jessica Flaherty and Jennifer Flaherty. Four nieces and nephews also survive Maxine.

Paul Clarence Van Ness Jr., the son of Paul C. and Dorothy (Lovelace) Van Ness, was born April 9, 1939, in Lincoln, Neb. He was a 1957 graduate of Omaha Technical High School. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Later, he attended North Iowa Area Community College.

In April of 1959, Paul was united in marriage to Lois Yearington of Corning, Iowa. The couple moved to Nora Springs in 1969. Paul worked for several years as an auto mechanic in Mason City. In 1980, he began his own business, Paul's Auto, in Nora Springs.

Paul enjoyed working on cars, traveling, playing cards, pool, computer games, watching football on television and visiting with friends over coffee at his shop. His greatest love, though, was spending time with his family and help-ing them in any way that he could.

Paul was a member of the H.D.S. American Legion Post 449 of Nora Springs, the V.F.W. Post 733 of Mason City, the Fraternal Order of Eagles 3416 of Mason City and Omaha, Neb., and the Local Carpenters Union 1313 of Mason City.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Lois, of Nora Springs; sons, Paul Scott and his wife, Maria, Van Ness, of Nora Springs, and Philip and his wife, Shelly, of Rockwell; daughters, Sharlisa Katz of Plymouth, Suzanne Boyd and her husband, Tyler, of Harvey, La., and Sarah Clark of Mason City. Also surviving is his father, Paul C. Scott was born on Dec. 27, 1969, the son of Sandy (Mehaus) Reinken. He graduated from the Nora Springs-Rock Falls High School in 1988, where he played baseball and football, and competed in track and wrestling.

Mary Lu was born on February 15, 1927, in Wayne County, Iowa, the daughter of Glenn and Wessie (Fulton) Conner. She graduated from Chariton High School and Drake University with an elementary education major. She married Charles Maguire on March 30, 1956, in Des Moines.

Mary Lu taught school for 36 years, first in a one-room Warren County country school and then at Windsor and Woodlawn Elementary Schools in Des Moines. She retired from teaching in 1984.

Mary Lu enjoyed traveling, knitting, reading, baking and loved spending time with family and friends.

She was a member of Walnut Hills United Methodist Church, P.E.O. Chapter IE, and various educational associations.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Charles Maguire of Urbandale and the Willows in Mason City; one son, Paul (Penny) Maguire of Sun City, Arizona; one daughter, Deborah (James) Stanton of Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Todd (Erica) Maguire of Boise, Idaho, Jerrod Maguire (Kelly Kowalczyk) of Phoenix, Ariz., Mark (Melinda) Stanton of Lincoln, Neb., and Melissa Stanton of Iowa City; two great grandchildren, Beck Maguire and Makenna Stanton; one brother, Robert K. (Marcie) Conner of Indianola; one niece, Dee Gee (David) Blair, of Cherokee; three great nieces, Jennifer, Elizabeth and Kathleen; and many special cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

THOMPSON— Vernon Elwood Norstrud, 75, of Thompson died Saturday (Nov. 8, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson with the Rev. Mark Decker officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

FOREST CITY — Alpha Luella Swanson, 98, of Forest City, died Saturday, (November 8, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m.Wednesday at Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City with the Rev. Doug Farrell officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church and continue until time of service.

(Alpha) Luella Swanson was born in Forest City on October 18, 1905, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Segerstrom) Lewis. She attended Forest City schools and graduated from Forest City High School in 1924 with her Normal School Teaching Degree.

Luella taught in country schools in Ellington and Mount Valley Township for seven years, even completing a school year after her marriage.

On December 26, 1931, she married Herman Swanson in Albert Lea, Minn. The couple made their home on a farm southeast of Forest City for many years. They retired from farming in 1982 and moved to Forest City.

Luella was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City where she taught Sunday school and was involved with the Awana Club. She took good care of her family and enjoyed quilting, baking, canning and looking after her garden, especially her flowers and violets.

She is survived by her three children; William Swanson and wife, Kathy, of Yuma, Ariz., Sharon Curtis and husband, David, of Nekoosa, Wis., and Lois Pruett of Rochester, Minn. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Luella was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman in 1988; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Edward Gutierrez; a granddaughter, LuDawn Curtis; a sister, Elsie Olson; and three brothers, Lyle, Russell and Forest Lewis.

NORA SPRINGS — Paul C. Van Ness, Jr., 64, of 309 North Seminary, formerly of Omaha, Nebraska, died Saturday (November 8, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Michael Daley of the New Life Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church officiating. Burial will be at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs with military graveside rites by the H.D.S. American Legion Post # 449 of Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Paul Clarence Van Ness, Jr., the son of Paul C. Van Ness, Sr. and Dorothy (Lovelace) Ronnfeldt, was born April 9, 1939, in Lincoln, Neb. He was a 1957 graduate of Omaha Technical High School. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Later he attended North Iowa Area Community College. In April of 1959, Paul was united in marriage to Lois Yearington of Corning, Iowa. The couple moved to Nora Springs in 1969. Paul worked for several years as an auto mechanic in Mason City. In 1980, he began his own business, Paul’s Auto, in Nora Springs.

Paul enjoyed working on cars, traveling, playing cards, pool, computer games, watching football on television, and visiting with friends over coffee at his shop. His greatest love, though, was spending time with his family and helping them in any way that he could.

Paul was a member of the H.D.S. American Legion Post #449 of Nora Springs, the V.F.W. Post #733 of Mason City, the Fraternal. Order of Eagles #3416 of Mason City and Omaha, Nebraska, and the Local 1313 Carpenters Union for fifteen years.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lois, of Nora Springs; sons, Paul Scott and his wife, Maria,Van Ness of Nora Springs, and Philip and his wife, Shelly, of Rockwell; daughters, Sharlisa Katz of Plymouth, Suzanne Boyd and her husband, Tyler, of Harvey, La., and Sarah Clark of Mason City. Also surviving is his father Paul C. Van Ness, Sr. and his wife, Loretta, of Mason City and his mother, Dorothy Ronnfeldt, of Omaha, Neb.; sister, Dorothy Hopkins and her husband, Rodney, of LaVista, Neb,; twelve grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Paul was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Wayne and Larry Joe; one sister, Judy Haase; and one nephew, Donald Stanger III.
