PAULINE I. BAGENSTOS

CLEAR LAKE — Pauline I. Bagenstos, 83, 3119 Main Ave., died Sunday (Nov. 9, 2003) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave. N., with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with a Beta Sigma Phi service at 5 p.m.

The family of Pauline I. Bagenstos has requested that memorial contributions may be given to the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, Iowa, Union Congregational Church, Hackensack, Minn., or to Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.

Pauline was born Jan. 6, 1920, in LaPorte City, Benton County, Iowa, the daughter of Earl S. and Catherine (Wilson) Young. She graduated from LaPorte City High School in 1938 and attended business college in Waterloo.

She married Earle Bagenstos March 9, 1944, in San Antonia, Texas. Pauline and her husband owned the Watertower Paint & Repair Co. where she was the stenographer and bookkeeper for five years.

She enjoyed fishing, hunting with her husband, loved nature, as well as traveling.

Pauline was an active member of P.E.O. Chapter LE, 21st Century Club, Beta Sigma Phi, Clear Lake Women’s Club, and the Clear Lake Christian Women’s Club. She was also a 50 member of Thistle Rebekah Lodge.

Pauline was a current member of the First Congregational Church in Clear Lake.

Pauline is survived by her sister, Emma Turner and her husband Warren, of Hudson; 10 nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and many special friends.

Pauline is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Earle in 1967; three brothers, George, Russell and Robert; and a sister, Frances Kruse.

BUFFALO CENTER — Ubbe Harms, 80, of Buffalo Center, died Sunday (Nov. 9, 2003) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Burial will be in the Olen Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St. N.W. in Buffalo Center and one hour prior to services at the church.

MERLE CHARLES JANSSEN


BELMOND — Merle Charles Janssen, 77, of Goodell, died Saturday (Nov. 8, 2003) at the Belmond Care Center after a long battle with Parkinson’s and cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery, Belmond.

Visitation was held on Monday, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond.

Merle was born Oct. 2, 1926, in Carroll, Iowa, son of William and Recka (Prill) Janssen and lived in Glidden until 1942 when the family moved to a farm north of Goodell. Merle graduated from Belmond High School in 1945.

In 1950, he was drafted into the Army and served during the Korean Conflict.

In 1951, he married Joan Marie Lowenberg. To this union, seven sons and two daughters were born.

After his discharge from service, Merle started farming with his father, Bill and brother, Roy. In 1960, Merle started farming on his own.

In 1970, he started Merle Janssen and Sons Chester Whites. The family raised purebred Chester White hogs for over 25 years.

Merle loved to attend the Iowa State Fair every year and show hogs with his family and friends.

He had great pride in all of his children and enjoyed watching their sporting events and other activities.

In February of 2001, Merle received medals in recognition of his service in Korea.

After cancer surgery in September of 2001, he entered the Belmond Care Center.

Merle was president of the Hancock Health Improvement Association, a 4-H leader, served on the Klemme Elevator Board, and was a 50-year member of the Goodell American Legion.

Merle will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include wife, Joan; children, Danny (Donnelle), Dennis (Barbara), Steve (Marilyn), Scot (Jody), Terry (Donna), Timmy (Jane), Becky, and Bradley (Amy); grandchildren, Matt (Melissa), Nick, Jennifer, Joni, Jeffrey, Rachel (Nathan) Evans, Ryan (Susan), Heather, Jessica (Mike) Lane, Eric, Nolan, Justin, Holly, Brian, Megan, Caleb, and Alyssa; great-grandchildren, Alexis Lane, Hallie and Hope Evans, and Brenden Janssen. Merle is also survived by his sisters, Leona (Paul) Givens and Faye (Wayne) Irelan;, and sister-in-law, Flora Janssen.

Preceding Merle in death were an infant daughter, Diana Marie; his parents, William and Recka Janssen; and brother, Roy.

WALLACE W. JENKINS


SHAKOPEE, Minn. — Wallace W. Jenkins, 66, of Shakopee, Minn., died on Saturday (Nov. 8, 2003) at Trevilla Nursing Home in Golden Valley.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Cavanaugh-McNearney Funeral Home with the Rev. Laura Duffee officiating. Burial will follow in Valley Cemetery in Shakopee, with military honors.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Cavanaugh-McNearney Funeral Home in Shakopee, Minn.

Survivors include daughter, Julie of Shakopee; son Jeff and wife, Claudia, of Becker, Minn.; five grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters, Delores Fredrickson of Northwood, and Donna Fredrickson of Manly; Kenney Jenkins of Bay City, Wis. and Dick Jenkins of Eldridge, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; parents; brother, Delmer and sister Mary.

Mr. Jenkins served in the United States Navy and owned and operated the Shakopee Dairy Queen prior to retirement.

MASON CITY — Dean D. Nelson, 84, of 3 Briarstone Court, died Sunday (Nov. 9, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St. in Mason City, with the Rev. Paul D. Finger, officiating. Burial with military honors will be at 2:15 p.m. Thursday at St Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Stanhope.

HAMPTON — Grace Sharpe, 99, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Chicago, Ill., died Sunday (Nov. 9, 2003) at the Park Place West Nursing Home in Ocala, Fla.

OTTO AUGUST VESTWEBER


BELMOND — Otto August Vestweber, 90, of Belmond, passed away on Monday (Nov. 10, 2003) at the Belmond Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond with the Rev. Herm Gruis officiating. Burial will take place in the Immanuel Reformed Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick Lane in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Otto, the son of Conrad and Dora (Meinders) Vestweber was born April 4, 1913, in Wright County, Iowa. He grew up in the Alexander vicinity, attending the Alexander school. At an early age he began working for area farmers.

On Jan. 19, 1942, Otto was united in marriage with Wilhelmine Kriens. To this union, six children were born.

Following his marriage, Otto worked on farms in the Belmond, Corwith, Hampton, and Rowan areas, until going to work in 1953 at the Rowan Lumber and Grain; he later was the custodian at the Rowan and Belmond schools.

Otto is survived by his wife, Wilhelmine; five children: Bonnie Brunotte and her husband, Steve, of Tucson, Ariz., Jerry and his wife, Meg, of Mount Prospect, Ill., Betty Vestweber of Rowan, Dennis and his wife, Sandy, of Leland, and Keith of Mount Pleasant; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Roger; his parents, Conrad and Dora Vestweber; four sisters: Elizabeth, Anna, Alvina, and Dorothea; and four brothers, John, Conrad, Bill and Curt.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — James Espeland, 55, of Sioux Falls, died Monday (Nov. 10, 2003) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Beresford Zion United Methodist Church in Beresford, S.D.

JEAN J. HAHESY

MANCHESTER — Jean J. Hahesy, 64, of Manchester died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 2003) at her home after a sudden illness.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 10, at the Manchester United Methodist Church with the Pastor Andy Baldwin officiating. Burial was in the Hansel Cemetery in Garber, Iowa.

Jean was born April 1, 1939, in Iowa City, the daughter of Francis J. and Nellie J. (Hill) Hansel. She graduated from Manchester High School in 1958.

On Oct. 16, 1958, Jean was united in marriage to William D. Hahesy at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Manchester. Five children were born to this union.

They settled in Manchester, where Jean was a homemaker. The couple later divorced.

Jean drove school bus for West Delaware Schools for 13 years.

Jean was a member of the Manchester Auxiliary.

Her hobbies included genealogy, woodcrafts and collecting owls.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Jean is survived by her parents, Francis and Nellie Hansel of Manchester; five children and their spouses, Debra and Ed Simon of Clear Lake, Bill Hahesy and fiancée, Kendra Carpenter, of Masonville, Barb and Lonnie Aulwes of Strawberry Point, Richard Hahesy of Manchester, and Daniel and Amy Hahesy of Manchester; 20 grandchildren including Carrie Hagenow, of Clear Lake, Katie Hagenow, of Clear Lake, Sgt. Tammi Oetken, of Hampton serving with the 1133rd Transportation Company of the National Guard, Ed and Brenda Simon, of Mason City, and Spc. Chris Simon, of Mason City serving with the 1133rd Transportation Company of the National Guard; and seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Hansel of Marion; two brothers, Jim and Wanda Hansel of Cedar Rapids and Larry and Mary Hansel of Manchester; and special friends, Milo and Leona Letts, Charlotte and Oscar Hicks, Delpha and Jamie Ostrander, Jeff Penney and Donnie.

Jean was preceded in death by an infant son, Dennis Hahesy, in 1961.

UBBIE F. HARMS


BUFFALO CENTER — A celebration of life for Ubbie F. Harms, 80, of Buffalo Center, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center, with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Interment will be in the Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Ubbie F. Harms was born to Harm and Johanna (Jutting) Harms on April 20, 1923, on a farm near Buffalo Center. Ubbie grew up near Buffalo Center and Woden. He was baptized in the Reformed Church. He attended school in Buffalo Center and later country school.

Ubbie married Harriet Harringa on April 6, 1945, at the Methodist parsonage in Algona. They farmed a few years south of Buffalo Center.

In 1952, he went to work at Welps Hatchery in Bancroft for 10 years. Later he was custodian at Forest City, Clear Lake, and Crystal Lake schools for 15 years. Also Ubbie was custodian for Manufacturer’s Bank, Timely Mission Nursing Home and the First Reformed Church.

Ubbie enjoyed using his hands in remodeling projects. He liked talking to young people, listening to country music and visiting the Grand Ole Opry and Branson, Mo. He took great pleasure in the company of his grandchildren and friends. Ubbie was a very social person.

Ubbie died on Sunday (Nov. 9, 2003) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills at the age of 80.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet, of Buffalo Center; daughters, Joanne Steinmetz and her husband, Terry, of Northwood, Ruth Skjeie of LuVerne, Minn. and Cheryl Bakken and her husband, James, of Forest City; 12 grandchildren, Dale and Joan Steinmetz of Des Moines, Beth and Mark Heller of Blairsburg, Laurel Steinmetz of Iowa City, Sara Steinmetz of Indianola, Kenneth and Teresa Skjeie, David Skjeie, Rick and Shelly Skjeie, all of Forest City; Michael Skjeie of Golden Valley, Ariz., Cheila and Bryan Frayne, Dawn and Jeremy Mills, Bradley Bakken, all of Garner; and Brenda and Eddie Simon of Mason City; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leonard and his wife, Lois, of Forest City, and Harley and his wife, Doris, of Buffalo Center; four sisters, Francis Kelso of Buffalo Center. Leona Vinz and her husband, Jim, of Thompson, Dorie Sinnard and her husband, Gary, and Linda Johnson and her husband, Kevin, all of Forest City; a sister-in-law, Louise Harms of Sweetwater, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step mother, Anna; two brothers, Harold and Willard; and by a grandson.

CLEAR LAKE — Alfred Larson, 90, 903 Ninth Ave. S., died Sunday (Nov. 9, 2003) at the Knett Medical Center in Weslaco, Texas.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N., with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Alfred Larson Memorial Fund.

Alfred was born March 8, 1913, in Clear Lake, the son of Andrew Peter and Lena Rebecca (Kittleson) Larson.

He worked for the family business, Larson Masonry on Independence St., (which is now 9th Ave S). He later went into business with his brothers Roy Larson and Merle Larson doing cement and plastering until his retirement.

Alfred married Anna Mae Kurtz April 20, 1935. They had a daughter Beverly. Anna died in 1988.

Alfred married Jeanyce Jacobs on Dec. 31, 1991 in Weslaco, Texas. They spent their winters in Magic Valley Trailer Court, Weslaco, Texas.

Alfred’s hobbies included flower gardening, especially with Iris and Gladiolas, hunting, fishing and working around his cottage in Red Wing, Minn.

He was a member and past officer of the I.O.O.F., and member of the United Methodist Church.

Alfred is survived by his wife, Jeanyce Larson, of Clear Lake; daughter, Beverly Elder, of Mason City; grandchildren, Elizabeth Villafana and her husband, Manny, of Wayzata, Minn., Sarah Lyons and her husband, Dennis, of Winnetka, Ill., and Jennifer Keough and her husband, Michael, Whitefish Bay, Wis.; eight great-grandchildren, Elisa and Manuela Villafana and Elizabeth, Gabrielle, and Alexandra Lyons; and Kathryne, Patrick and Charles Keough; brothers, Merle Larson and Roy Larson, of Clear Lake; step-children, Kathy Hinrichs and her husband, Gene, and their children, Scott Hinrichs and his wife, Heidi, and Sarah Thein and her husband, Doug, of Ventura, and Mary Hicks and her husband, Sherman, of Hackett, Ark., and their daughter, Roxanne Parker and her husband of Greenwood, Ark.

Alfred is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Anna Mae, April 27, 1988; two sisters and three brothers.

FRED MANTHEY


EAGAN, Minn. — Fred Manthey, 89, of Eagan, Minn. died on Monday (Nov. 10, 2003).

Fred is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Dorthe; sons, John (Bonnie) of Maplewood, Minn., David of Eagan, Minn. and Steven of Westminster, Colo.; “Granddogs” Cady and Abby; and special friends, Steve, Julie, Michael and Emily Larson, of Eagan.

Fred was a graduate of Macalester College in Minnesota. He had a long career in Public Education and Health Care Administration in Minnesota and Iowa, retiring as vice president of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

Fred volunteered with the Friends of the Library, Westcott Branch of the Dakota County Library, Minnesota, where he coordinated the semi-annual book sales.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 3930 Rahn Rd., Eagan, Minn. (651) 454-2344).

ARMSTRONG — Ervin W. Johnson, 86, of Armstrong, formerly of Ledyard, died Tuesday (Nov. 11, 2003) at Valley Vue Care Center, Armstrong.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethany Evangelical and Reformed Church, Ledyard, with the Rev. Larry Doughan officiating. Burial will be in Highland Home Cemetery, Ledyard.

CHARLES CITY — Mable F. Daly, 90, of 806 S. Main St., Charles City, died Tuesday (Nov. 11, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Center, in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane in Charles City, with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Charles City.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. with a vigil wake service at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

CLEAR LAKE — Debbie Kay Frank, 46, 214 Mars Hill Drive, Clear Lake, died Monday (Nov. 10, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake. The Rev. Ed Bartz will be officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Following the service her body will be cremated. Inurnment will take place at Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt, at a later date.

Memorials may be given to the Debbie K. Frank Memorial Fund in c/o Ada Hill, 214 Mars Hill Dr., Clear Lake, IA 50428.

Debbie was born July 10, 1957, in Algona, the daughter of Lynn and Eugenia (Bosch) Tobey. At the time of her death she was working at Liberty Square in Nora Springs.

Debbie is survived by her husband, Randy Frank; children, Sean and Brandon Frank, and Adam, Angie and Drew Rosendahl; granddaughter, Alexis Rosendahl; siblings, Ada Hill, Bonnie Scheibel and her husband, Rudy, Terry Tobey and his wife, Ozzie, and Dwayne Tobey and his wife, Becky; sister-in-law, Darlene Tobey; and many nieces and nephews.

Debbie was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Janice VanHorn and Connie Funk; brother, Richard Tobey and infant brother Bruce Tobey.

MARY ELLEN HEMMERICH


GREENE — Funeral services for Mary Ellen Hemmerich, 55, of Hampton, formerly of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Vilmar (rural Greene) with the Rev. Mark Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene and one hour before the service at the church.

Mary Ellen Hemmerich was born Feb. 13, 1947, at the Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City, a daughter of Walter Phillip and Arlene (Schoenaman) Hemmerich and died Monday, (Nov. 10, 2003,) at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton.

She attended Coldwater country school. Following her mother’s death in 1965 she made her home at the Dumont Care Center and later at a group home in Hampton before entering the Hampton Health Care Center.

Mary was employed by Access Inc., in Hampton where she took great pride in her work each day and was always eager to return to work the next day. She loved and was loved by her family and staff members who worked with her. Her favorite greeting was “I Love You” with lots of hugs and kisses. She looked forward to having visits from her family and enjoyed being with the small children.

OSAGE — Meta M. Jensen, 97, of Osage died Monday (Nov. 10, 2003) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Meta was born Sept. 19, 1906, in Floyd County near Colwell, the daughter of Frank and Tina (Kohlman) Tjaden.

She was united in marriage to Reimar C. Jensen on Feb. 14, 1935. They farmed north of Charles City until 1945, when they purchased a farm southwest of Osage. They lived there until moving to Osage in 1981. Reimar died in 1993. Meta lived in her own home until October of 2002. She then lived at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage. Meta worked at the Charles City Country Club and at various restaurants in Charles City and was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

She is survived by one sister-in-law, Marian Tjaden of Charles City; a brother-in-law, Sidney Jensen of Elveto, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews

MASON CITY — Mary S. Maginnis, 83, of Mason City, died Sunday (Nov. 9, 2003) at her home.

Mary S. Miller was born Aug. 31, 1920, in Bowling Green, Ky., the daughter of Oliver and Bessie Mae (Cherry) Miller. She was united in marriage to Jerry Maginnis on June 7, 1941. He preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1991.

Mary graduated from Pontiac High School and the Pontiac Business College, both in Pontiac, Mich. She was employed by the New Hampshire Superintendents Office, and was the office manager at Mason City High School until her retirement.

Throughout her life Mary did volunteer work for the Girl Scouts, hospitals, churches, and those in need. She enjoyed flowers, birds, bridge, games, golf, working, as well as living in California during the winter months. Mary was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mason City. Mary’s greatest love was being a devoted mother and grandmother.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Maureen Boynton, and her husband, Jan, of California, Karen Schloemer and her husband, Dave, of Mason City, and Bill Maginnis and his wife, Jodi, of Mason City; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernadine Sebastiannelli and her husband, Nino, of California.

Dean Deforest Nelson was born April 8, 1919, near Fairmont, Minn., a son of Iver and Inger (Twedt) Nelson.

Dean graduated from Stratford High School, Stratford, and attended Business College at Chillicothe, Mo. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a control tower operator.

Dean was united in marriage to Doris M. Whaley on June 11, 1951, at Webster City.

He farmed in the Brownsdale and Crystal Lake, Minn., areas and later, near Rake. Along with a partner, Dean operated a Wayne’s Feed Produce Company at Stanhope.

From 1969-82 he worked with the USDA as a district farm program director in North Iowa.

Dean was a member of St Paul Lutheran Church, Mason City, and the Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Nelson, Mason City; a daughter, Debra Novak and her husband, Ron, Forest City; a son, Brandon Nelson, Lake Mills; a brother, Wayne Nelson and his wife, Jan, Des Moines.

CLEAR LAKE — Bonnie Maxine Starkey, 74, of Clear Lake, died suddenly and unexpectedly Friday (Nov. 7, 2003) in her home. She was a source of inspiration, guidance, comfort and love to her family and others whose lives she touched.

A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess and the Rev. Edward Starkey officiating. Interment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Funeral Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and one hour preceding the service at the church.

Bonnie, daughter of Joe and Irene Cook, was born on Aug. 26, 1929, near Forest City. She spent her entire life living in North Central Iowa.

She graduated with the class of 1946 from Forest City High School and completed her teacher’s training at Waldorf College.

Following this, Bonnie taught school in a one-room country schoolhouse outside of Forest City in the same area where she was raised. She then taught fifth and sixth grade in Clarion.

Bonnie and Robert Starkey were married June 14, 1952, in Forest City. Their wedding was the first ever held in what was then the new United Methodist Church. They enjoyed 51 blessed years together.

She was a devoted wife, cherished mother, loving grandmother, and caring daughter. Bonnie was very proud of her family and treasured the times they spent together.

Bonnie retired from teaching full time to raise her children, but for nearly two decades was a frequent substitute elementary school teacher in the Clear Lake Public Schools.

She also sold World Book encyclopedias and Wanda Chair baby equipment to hundreds of families across North Central Iowa.

For 18 years, Bonnie focused her energy and passion on a women’s retail clothing store, ‘Dawne’s’ on Main Street in Clear Lake. She enjoyed the challenge of owning and operating this with her husband, Bob. They retired in 2000.

Zion Lutheran has been Bonnie’s church family for 51 years. She was active in her church and served as president of the Zion Lutheran Church Women and was a member of the church council. Additionally, Bonnie spent several years as a wedding planner at the church.

She was active in various charities. She also played a critical role in helping a community of displaced people from Laos establish a new home in Clear Lake.

Her faith, strength, convictions, and nurturing character are well known.

She was loved by many and will be missed by countless people whose lives she influenced.

She is survived by her mother, Irene Cook, of Clear Lake; son, Dr. Randall Starkey and his wife, Mary Jo, of San Francisco, Calif.; daughter, Dawne Starkey Sipe and her husband, Dr. James Sipe, of Golden Valley, Minn.; grandchildren, Joe and Jenna Starkey and Rachel and Christopher Sipe; brother-in-law, Richard Starkey and his wife, Judy, of Fort Francis, Canada; and several cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

Her husband, Bob, who died July 21 of this year; and her father, Joe Cook, preceded Bonnie in death.

MERRIAM, Kan. — Angela Bengfort, 92, of Mer-riam, Kan., and formerly of Festina, Iowa, died Sunday (Nov. 9, 2003) at the Trinity Lutheran Manor in Merriam, Kan., following a long illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina. Angela was laid to rest in Our Lady of Seven Dolors Cemtery in Festina.

Angela Elizabeth Bengfort was born Sept. 27, 1911, in Festina, the daughter of Bern-ard and Elizabeth (Lechtenberg) Schmitz. Angela attended school in Festina.

She married Marc John Bengfort on Oct. 20, 1936, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina. The family lived in Festina, Calmar and Mason City. Angela moved into the Trinity Lutheran Manor in 1998.

Ervin William Johnson was born on Sept. 19, 1917, in Springfield Township, Iowa, the son of John J. and Alvena (Engelbarts) Johnson. He was baptized in the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Ledyard and attended Ledyard School until the eighth grade. He then helped on the family farm.

Ervin married Doris Ann Brock on Aug. 28, 1940, and they farmed in the Ledyard and Lakota area for many years. Doris preceded him in death in 1983. He retired from farming in 1986 and moved to Armstrong. In 1996, Ervin moved into the Valley Vue Care Center, Armstrong, where he received wonderful care.

Ervin enjoyed many years of playing fast-pitch softball, retiring from this at the age of 58 years. Also, he enjoyed going to the many polka fests and old-time dances. Ervin still enjoyed listening to this music for many years.

Ervin is survived by one daughter, Sandra (Russel) Sleper of Titonka; four sons, Steven (Kathy) Johnson of Mesa, Ariz., Ronald (Denise) Johnson of Bedford, Va., William (Sandra) Johnson of Armstrong, and Gary Johnson of Fairmont, Minn.; nine grand-children, Michael Maschoff, Lisa Escherich, Scott Johnson, Staci Johnson, Shannon Johnson, Trent Johnson, Melissa Ellwood, Jeremiah Johnson and Christina Johnson; two step-grandchildren, Angela Rizzo and David Manning; 15 great-grandchildren, Alex, Jacob, Megan, Samuel, Tyler, Andrew, Anna, Ellie, Madison, Brady, Skylar, Raygan, Paige, Josh and Austin.

He was very active in civic affairs. Among many things, he helped to found the Mason City Airport. He moved to Bloomington in 1979 and lived there until his death.

ALGONA — Public Eastern Star services for Thelma B. Hayes, 99, of Algona, will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. today in the chapel of the Wilson Funeral Home in Algona. Thelma B. Kirkpatrick, the daughter of Edward L. and Rovena (Fry) Kirkpatrick, was born Sept. 19, 1904, in Wellman. She attended school at Wellman-Keota High School and Stephens College before earning a public speak-ing degree and graduating Summa Cum Laude from Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

She taught school in Earl-ville and Pella.

On Aug. 15, 1930, Thelma married John M. Hayes in Keota. They made their home in La Moille, Conrad, Eldora, Algona and Mason City; and wintered in Florida for several years.

They enjoyed square dancing in Iowa and Florida and were members of the Balance and Swing Club. They celebrated their golden anniversary in 1980. John passed away Jan. 3, 1981.

While living in Mason City, Thelma was a member, president, and secretary of the Minerva Club.

In 1987 she returned to Algona. For more than 80 years she was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church, where she was a longtime choir member and served as a Sunday school teacher.

Thelma was a life Member of United Methodist Women and served in many leadership positions. She was an 81-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, thought to be the longest continuous membership in that organization.

Thelma also was a member of Bel Canto and P.E.O. and had served as a Red Cross volunteer.

She enjoyed cooking, golf, and playing games with her grandchildren.

Thelma B. Hayes died Monday (Nov. 10, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Algona.

She is survived by one son and his wife, Kirk and Julie Hayes, of Algona; one daughter, Carole Hayes, of Groveport, Ohio; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Charlotte Fagen, of Sigourney.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Delbert Colman, died Oct. 29, 2003, at his home in Columbia, S.C. He was 67 years old.

A graveside service was held on Nov. 1, 2003, at Celestial Memorial Gardens in Columbia, S.C., with full military honors.

He was a master sergeant and retired after 25 years in the army. He served in Korea and two tours in Vietnam.

He has worked for a mining company since his retirement.

Warren Allen Rasmus, the son of Irwin Victor and Thyra (Hansen) Rasmus, was born June 14, 1927, in Mason City. He attended Concord Township #3 country school and graduated from Garner High School in 1945. He continued his education at Waldorf College in Forest City.

Warren served his country in the U.S. Navy from February 1946 to December 1947 as a yeoman third class.

On June 23, 1951, he married Helen Ann Whipple at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. They took over the family farm north of Garner, where they raised their family and had a dairy and grain operation. The farm be-came a century farm in 1981. In 1993, they moved to Garner.

Warren enjoyed his family, grandchildren, friends, dancing and playing clarinet in high school, the Navy and with the Old Timers Band.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, and was a lifetime member of the Garner American Legion and VFW. He belonged to the Saddle Club, the North Garner Community Club, served on the Garner Creamery Board and was a charter mem-ber of the Garner Jaycees.

Warren is survived by his wife, Helen, of Garner; three children, Denny Rasmus and wife, Darlene, of Algona, Ron Rasmus and wife, Kathi, of Garner, and Ellen Franzen and husband, Dean, of New Hampton; six grandchildren: Jennifer, Jeremy, Dustin, Melanie, Andrew and Michelle; four step-grandchildren: Brooke and Amy Franzen and Chris and Andy Nixt; a great-grandchild, Alexandra Steffens; a twin brother, Wayne E. Rasmus, of Garner; a sister-in-law, Arlene Rasmus, of Garner; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Irwin Dean Rasmus; and a sister-in-law, Laurine Rasmus.

MASON CITY — Beatrice (Bea) Ila Cline, 90, of 612 North Harrison, Mason City, died Wednesday (Nov. 12, 2003) at her home.

Beatrice (Bea) Cline was born on May 15, 1913, in Mason City, the daughter of Percy Clifford and Ethel Clara (Brocket) Englet. She attended and received her education in the Mason City school system.

After completing her schooling, she worked for Decker’s Meat Packing Company in Mason City.

She was united in marriage to Warren A. Cline on Dec. 1, 1932, in Canton, S.D., and to this union was born four children.

Warren preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1993.

After their marriage, Bea worked for the Mason City Hemp Plant, Park Inn Hotel, Style Shop, and from 1951 she worked for the State Brand Creamery in Mason City until her retirement in 1971.

Bea enjoyed the outdoors, flowers, bingo, horses, bowling, and fishing, but her great love and enjoyment was being with family and friends.

Bea was a very loving and caring mother and grandmother who loved to smile and give hugs and kisses.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mason City.

Left to cherish her memory are four daughters, Dolores (Dody) Seidel, of Mason City, Patricia Cline, of Mason City, Shirley Marie Spilman, of Mason City, and Phyllis Proietti of Rapid City, S.D.; a son, Robert Cline and his wife, Kay, of Altoona; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia Ewers, of Mason City, Viola Gaines, of Mason City, and Betty Schumacher, of Tripoli; as well as other relatives and friends.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Emil E. Koerber, 96, of Bloomington, Minn., died Tuesday (Nov. 11, 2003).

He was very active in civic affairs. Among many things, he helped to found the Mason City Airport. He moved to Bloomington in 1979 and lived there until his death.

STEWARTVILLE, Minn. — Florence Multhauf, 97, of Stewartville, Minn., died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2003) in Stewartville at the Stewartville Care Center.

Florence was the daughter of Christina and Eugene Schumacher, the third in a family of five children. She was born Dec. 15, 1905, in Parkersburg.

She married Louis H. Multhauf in 1927, and lived in Charles City until 1944, when the family moved to Mason City.

Survivors include three daughters, Geraldine “Gerry” Tammel, of Spring Valley, Minn., Dorothy “Dottie” Mealy, of Madison, Wis., and Mary Lou Gottshalk, of Tyler, Texas; a son, Donald, of Duncan, British Columbia Canada; 18 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Mary (Knutson) and Louise (Marzen); two brothers, Marcus and Eugene; two grandchildren, Michael Mealy and Jeffrey Thadeus Multhauf; her husband, Louis; and her parents.

Florence was a jovial, loving and caring member of the Mason City community, in-cluding the Holy Family Parish.

As a young woman, Florence taught in a country school be-fore raising her four children. She shared her love of music and cooking with her entire family and especially loved the holidays.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

WAHPETON, N.D. — Funeral services for Sidney A. Willey, 59, of Wahpeton, formerly of Mason City, who died Wednesday at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church in Milford.

Sidney Allen Willey was born to Merle and Stella (Poe) Willey on March 5, 1944, in Cherokee. He graduated from Sutherland High School in 1962.

On Aug. 13, 1977, he married Carol J. Olson in Forest City.

Sidney was a retired Iowa State Trooper. From 1968 to 1986 he resided in Mason City before moving to Okoboji and then to Wahpeton in 1989.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, and the National Rifleman’s Association.

He enjoyed duck and goose hunting, fishing, and model- scale trains.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Willey; three children, Brent, 17, Tani, 12, and Ryan, 9, all of Wahpeton. Survivors also include one brother, Tom Willey and his wife, Jean, of Spencer; mother-in-law, Dorothy Olson, of Forest City; brothers-in-law, George Tippy, of Storm Lake, and Wayne (Kathy) Olson, of Columbia, Md.; sisters-in-law, Wendy (George) Feazell, of New Hamp-ton, and Carmen (Dan) Riley, of Waterloo; in addition to several nieces and nephews.

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. — Phyllis Ann Long, 77, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at her home in San Leandro.

A memorial Mass was celebrated Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at St. Felicitas Catholic Church in San Leandro. Arrangements were handled by Grissom’s Chapel and Mortuary in San Lorenzo, Calif.

Phyllis was born in Mason City, the youngest of three daughters, to Raymond and Marie (Mullen) Arnold. She was baptized at St. Joseph’s Parish and her Godparents were her Uncle David and Aunt Mary Donaldson.

As a child, Mary perform-ed with her family in many musical programs as part of the “Arnold Kids Band” while living in North Iowa.

In 1941, the family moved to Richmond, Calif., where she graduated from the local high school. On May 30, 1951, she married Michael Long in Oakwood, Calif. They had lived in San Leandro for 50 years. She worked for the San Leandro Boys Club and spent many years as an active parishioner of St. Felicita’s Church. She assisted with the church bulletin and enjoyed traveling with her husband.

Phyllis is survived by her husband of 53 years, Michael Long of San Leandro; daughters Eileen (Jay) Kerr of San Ramon, Calif., and Patty (Jay) Kerr of San Jose. Calif.; sisters, Doris Carlson of Oakdale, Calif., and Elaine Huntting of Green Valley, Ariz.; five grandchildren; Erin Kerr of New York City, Nathan Kerr of San Ramon, Calif., and Eric, Ryan and Lauren Carlos of San Jose, Calif.; a niece, Phyllis Ann (Wayne) Parrack and family of Woodburn, Ore.; nephews, Billy Ray (Delores) Carlson of Oakdale, Calif., Dennis (Priscilla) Carlson of Oakdale, Calif.; many cousins, including Sr. Doris Donaldson, PBVM, San Francisco, Ret. Loretta Arlene Grell was born in rural Garner on May 8, 1916, to Ernest and Linda (Rheinhart) Grell. She re-ceived her education at the Ventura Consolidated School, graduating in the spring of 1934. In the fall of 1934, she enrolled at Hamilton School of Commerce, graduating in 1936. In 1936, she was em-ployed by Lyons Launderers Cleaner and Furriers doing clerical work and later became their bookkeeper until they closed in 1969. In the spring of 1969, she became bookkeeper for Thomas Machine Company until her retirement in 1982.

Loretta was united in marriage to Robert M. Schultz of Mason City on Dec. 28, 1945, by the Reverend M.E. Rossow, pastor of Memorial Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Loretta was a long time member of Bethlehem Luth-eran Church in Mason City and was active in LWML and the Dorcas Circle of her church.

Loretta was an avid card player and fisherwoman. She spent many memorable times with her family at Lake Latoka in Alexandria, Minn.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Robert Schultz, of Mason City; sons, Edward Schultz and wife, Mary, of Cedar Falls, and Byron Schultz and wife, Elaine, of Forest City; five grandchildren, Ainslie, Robert, and Amanda Schultz of Forest City, and Elizabeth and Angela Schultz of Cedar Falls; a brother, Alfred Grell and his wife, Maggie, of Green Valley, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Helen Grandy and Melita Schultz of Oxbow, Saskatchewan, Canada; also several nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia, who passed away on Aug. 14, 1987; and her parents.
