DONALD W. LAMBIE

GRINNELL — Donald W. Lambie, 93, of Grinnell, died Monday (June 23, 2003) at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Daniel I. Ogata officating. Honorary bearers will be Dr. Robert Baumann, Jim George, Art Heimann, Eugene Lang, Ralph Luebben, Ray Obermiller, Ed Poush, Warren Reinecke and Jack Robertson.

A private interment will be Saturday at the Elmwood Cemetery in Renwick, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed to the Mayflower Home Human Needs Fund or to Grinnell College.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

He was born on July 28, 1909, in Dodge County, Neb., to Frank and Anna Weaver Lambie. He attended Rose-dale School and later graduated from Fremont High School.

Mr. Lambie graduated from Grinnell College and did grad-uate work at the Wharton School of Finance, University of Pennsylvania. He was certified as a public accountant in Nebraska and Iowa.

On Aug. 11, 1937, he was married to Candace Packard in Renwick, Iowa. The couple resided in Fremont, Neb., Lincoln, Neb., and Mason City, Iowa, where he was a certified public accountant.

The Lambies moved to Grinnell in 1952 and Donald joined the administrative staff at Grinnell College, hold-ing positions as secretary to the Board of Trustees, Treasurer and Vice President for Business.

He was active in the Presbyterian Church, the Kiwanis Club, the Fortnightly Club, United Way of Grinnell, and the Grinnell Senior Chamber of Commerce.

He was also a trustee of Buena Vista University and was awarded the distinguished Alumni Award in 1982 from Grinnell College. In 1997, he received an Honorary Alumni Award from Hastings College.

There are no immediate survivors.

His parents; his wife; one brother, Kenneth Lambie; and one sister, Velma Martin, preceded him in death.

GENA TAGESEN

MASON CITY — Gena Tagesen, 102, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Monday (June 23, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 2, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer G. Hernes officiating. Burial will be at the Kensett Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

KYLE STEVEN HEJLIK

BRITT— Kyle Steven Hejlik, son of Donald and Sarah (Wubben) Hejlik of Britt, was stillborn Wednesday (June 25, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Private family graveside services will be held at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Duncan with Father Michael Schueller officiating.

Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt is in charge of arrangements.

Other family members in-clude two sisters and a brother, Alysa, Rachel and Jacob Hejlik; paternal grandparents, Gary and Sally Hejlik, of Britt; maternal grandmother, Rosella Wubben, of Thompson; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Sidney Wubben.

ALBERT HENRY MUELLER

MANLY — Albert Henry Mueller, 92, of Manly, died Tuesday (June 24, 2003) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center.

According to his wishes cremation took place.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly with the Rev. Rob-ert Cumings officiating. Inurnment will be in the Manly Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St. in Manly, and one hour prior to service time Friday at the church.

Albert Henry Mueller was born on May 30, 1911, in rural Manly, the son of Gottlieb J. and Bertha (Stoecker) Mueller. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation in the St. Paul’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Manly, and later years was a very faithful and active member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly.

He attended and graduated from Manly High School in 1928, and attended Iowa State University.

He was united in marriage to Elsie Bartlett on Sept. 26, 1943, which he considered the greatest honor he would ever receive. She preceded him in death on Sept. 8, 1992.

After their marriage togeth-er they farmed and lived on the family farm until his re-tirement. After their retirement they moved into Manly.

Albert was very active in the Manly community, serving on the North Central School board, and many other community, charity, and church projects. He was also very supportive of the musical activities in the Manly community, and in his earlier years enjoyed flying his Piper Cub airplane.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Ruth Barnett and her husband, Rod, of New-ton, Iowa, Margaret Weir and her husband, Ben, of Colo, Iowa, Susan Trebil and her husband, Steve, of Manly, Iowa, and Jane Thompson and her husband, Bill, of Dumont, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Bartlett, Gladys Bartlett, Julia Bartlett, and Marcie Mueller; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Albert was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie; his parents; daughter, Ann Krebs; and two brothers, Mark and Harold Mueller.

CHARLES ALBERT OLSON

KENOSHA, Wis. —Charles Albert Olson, 69, of Kenosha, Wis., a former Dows resident, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, of complications from a brain tumor in Kenosha.

A private memorial service and urn burial was held on June 19, 2003 at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

A special friend, Gary Turner, brought the remains from the Hansen-Lendman Funeral Home from Kenosha, Wis.

LIRLENE IONE BAMFORD

BELMOND — Lirlene Ione Bamford, 85, of Belmond, passed away Wednesday (June 25, 2003) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond, due to heart complications following surgery.

Funeral services for Lirlene I. Bamford will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation for Lirlene I. Bamford will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home at 111 Luick Lane S. in Belmond and one hour prior to services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the Belmond Historical Society, Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, Belmond Ambulance or to the donor’s choice.

Lirlene was born near Jewell, Iowa, to her Norwegian immigrant parents, Ivar L. and Ingeborg (Hanson) Oppedal, on May 29, 1918. The family moved to a farm near Alexander, Iowa, and after Ingeborg’s death in 1924, took up residence near Belmond, where Lirlene spent the rest of her life.

On March 21, 1942, she married Loren A. Bamford, and the couple farmed and raised their family on the land north of Belmond, residing there until they moved into town in 1999.

Lirlene was a graduate of Belmond High School and a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond. She loved her Iowa farm roots and took great pride in her Norwegian heritage, making three visits to Norway during her lifetime.

Surviving Lirlene, grateful for the joy she gave them, are her husband, Loren; daughters, Janice Crawford of Belmond, Merry Heilmann and her husband, Steve, of Afton, Minn.; son, Paul of Chelsea, Mich., her Brazilian “son”, Paulo Canineu and his wife, Maria, and their family; 10 grandchildren, Jeffrey Crawford and his wife, Michelle, Marc Crawford and his wife, Carolyn, Matthew Crawford and his wife, Brandy, Ann Crawford and friend, Jason Campbell, Jonathan Heilmann and fiancée, Kim Cote, Scott Heilmann, Katherine Heilmann, Leslie, Inga, and Siobhan Bamford, two great-granddaughters, Madison and Abbigail Crawford; and a new great-grandchild due this fall.

Lirlene will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

JACK M. CONKLIN

OSAGE — Jack Matthews Conklin, 84, of Osage died Thursday (June 26, 2003) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Jack Matthews Conklin was born Oct. 11, 1918, in Clear Lake, the son of Harry and Helen (Matthews) Conklin. The family moved to Osage in 1927, when Harry became assistant county engineer for Mitchell County.

Jack graduated from Osage High School in 1936. After graduation he completed graduate studies in commercial art and was a vocal soloist for WHO radio and played string bass in the Conky Conklin and His Commodores Dance Band.

Jack was married to Ruth Cordes on Sept. 22, 1940, in Osage. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as the crew chief of a B-25 bomber.

After receiving his discharge, he operated the Conklin Stamp Company, managed the Green Parrot Restaurant in Decorah for a brief period, was a division manager for the Motor Club of Iowa, and in 1960 started selling Conklin chemical products with his father.

In 1969, Jack, with his brother Bob, founded Conklin Company, Inc. in Burnsville, Minn., which is now located in Shakopee, Minn.

Jack was Conklin’s Senior Vice President and the creator of the Harry Conklin Museum. He retired in 1992. In 2002 Jack gifted the Harry Conklin Museum to the Mitchell County Historical Society.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Church of Christ, 630 State St., in Osage with the Rev. Robert Melhorn officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery with Military Rites by Osage American Legion Post 278.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Champion – Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and one hour before services at the church.

He is survived by one daughter, Ellen Elsbury, of Osage; one granddaughter, Mrs. David (Tanya) Womeldorf of Lakeville, Minn.; one great-granddaughter, Samantha Womeldorf of Lakeville, Minn.; one sister, Mrs. Sam (Ann) Erickson of Brick, New Jersey; one aunt, Mrs. Jean Knutson of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth, on Oct. 2, 2001; and brother, Robert.

NEIL R. FULLERTON

MASON CITY — Neil R. Fullerton, 78, of Mason City, died Wednesday (June 18, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

It was Neil’s wish to have his body donated to the University of Iowa - College of Medicine.

Memorial services for Neil will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Mike Stewart officiating. Communion will be served.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. is in charge of arrangements.

Neil was born Sept. 24, 1924, the son of Harold R. and Iva (Schnartz) Fullerton in Floyd County, Iowa. He was baptized Neil Robert Fullerton on Aug. 9, 1925 in Rockford, Iowa, and received the confirmation of his faith on Dec. 31, 1961, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Clear Lake.

Neil attended schools in Rockford and graduated from Rockford High School in 1942.

After he graduated from high school he enlisted in the Army Air Corp. and served in World War II. Neil was part of the 330th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force and also was a technical sergeant, radio operator and gunner and was then discharged from active duty.

He then received his second call to serve his country in the Korean Conflict where he was part of the Second Air Rescue Squadron and a technical sergeant. Neil was then discharged at Offut Air Base in Omaha, Neb.

He was united in marriage to Baneta Yarger on Sept. 24, 1976 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Baneta Fullerton, of Mason City; brothers, William Fullerton of Des Moines, and Dale Fullerton of Rockford; sisters, Maxine Vorhes of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Rosemary Diaz of Kirkwood, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Iva Fullerton; three brothers, Dean Fullerton, John “Jack” Fullerton and Robert Fullerton.

ROBERT L. KRESS SR.

DAVENPORT — Robert L. Kress Sr., 80, of Davenport, passed away Wednesday (June 25, 2003) at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Runge Mortuary, 838 E. Kimberly Road in Davenport. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Davenport.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Runge Mortuary.

Robert was born on March 8, 1923, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of John Julius and Maude (Stafford) Kress.

He was united in marriage to A. Louise Franzen on March 31, 1944, at McClellan Heights Church, now St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.

Robert was part owner of Davenport Tent and Awning. After 36 years Robert retired in 1985 as a Sales Engineer at Roth Pump Co., Milan, Ill.

After retirement he was the custodian at Edwards Congregational Church and St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.

Survivors incoude his wife, Louise, of Davenport; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Jr. and Sarah Kress, of Mason City; grandchildren, Cheri Kress, of Washington, D.C., Jared and Amy (Swarts) Shuppy, of Moline, Ill., Dr. Jay and Kelly (Kress) Koenen, of Newton; many nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by parents; brothers, Don and Lloyd Schweiger, Harold and John Kress; sisters, Dorothy Kress-Bailey, Gladys Schweiger and Marie Bloomquist; and a daughter, Sue Swarts.

NORMA CROSS

IOWA CITY - Norma Cross, 86, of 701 Oaknoll Drive, Iowa City, died Friday (June 27, 2003) at the Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Rev. Gary Marzolf of the Forest City United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations can be made in Norma's memory to Mercy Hospital Foundation, Iowa City, Iowa.

Norma was born March 10, 1917, in Lawler, Iowa, the daughter of Otto W. and Olga (Buchholz) Cross. She graduated from Forest City High School in 1934.

She received an associate of arts degree from Waldorf College in 1936, transferred to the University of Iowa where she received a B.A. de-gree in music in 1941 and a MFA degree in music in 1942.

She began her teaching career in music at the University of Iowa in 1942 where she taught as a director of the Pedagogy Laboratory, retiring as Associate Professor in 1987.

She was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Fraternity at Waldorf College, Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Kappa Lambda, both at the University of Iowa.

She had performed with Dr. Clapp and James Dixon with the University Symphony Orchestra with numerous performances, and accompanied many faculty and students in their recitals over the years.

Norma has published literature and teaching materials used by many all across the United States in the aid of teaching piano.

She has presented numerous workshops across the state, been a judge in local and state music festivals and contests, and is recognized in a number of national and in-ternational Biographical Listings.

In addition to these accomplishments, she is a member of the Forest City United Methodist Church, American Association of University Professors, Music Teachers National Association, and IMTA Music Teacher Association.

Norma's family and her life has been music.

MASON CITY- Helen Marie (Hinich) Schauf, 85, of 804 N. Connecticut Ave., died Thursday evening (June 26, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

L. DOYLE PRYOR

ROLLA, Mo. - L. Doyle Pryor, 79, of Rolla, Mo., passed away Friday (June 20, 2003) at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. He was born Jan. 23, 1924, in Hart-ville, Mo., to the late George and Myrtle (Floyd) Pryor.

After moving from Charles City, Iowa, where he lived in the 1940s and 50s, Mr. Pryor became an accomplished businessman in Rolla, Mo., as the owner of the popular Pryor's Pizza since 1962. Additionally, he was a longtime Shriner and one time mayor of St. Robert, Mo.

Mr. Pryor will be greatly missed by his surviving family which includes his lifelong companion, Martha Hutson, and her loving children, Martha J. George and Roseanne; one daughter, Janice Dana and her husband, Gary, of Charles City, Iowa; two grandchildren, Steve Dana and his wife, Anita, of Lewisville, Texas, and Deb and her husband, Tom Kleinschmidt, of Nashua, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Kori, Alex, and Colton Kleinschmidt; two sisters-in-law, Dessie and Thelma Pryor, numerous other nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Pryor was preceded in death by his former wife, Geneva; one infant brother; five brothers, Nolan, Eldo, George, Howard and Hayden; three sisters, Cledith, Faye, and Nelma; and one sister-in-law, June.

Services for Mr. Pryor were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla, Mo.

Interment followed at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Hartville, Mo.

MASON CITY - William D. "Bill" Steltzner, 84, of 137 Winnebago Way, Mason City, died Thursday (June 26, 2003) at the Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Bill was born Dec. 8, 1918, in Detroit, Mich., the son of William and Mary Steltzner. He received his education in the Detroit area. He worked at the Packard Motor Company. Bill served in the Army during World War II and upon his discharge in 1943, returned to Packard.

On Sept. 1, 1945, he was united in marriage to Bernice Evanson in Detroit. They moved to the North Iowa area where he was a long-time paint contractor. To this marriage were born two sons, Michael and David.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice, his son David and wife, Jane, of Albert Lea, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Fran Steltzner of Mason City; four granddaughters, Gina Thimmesch and husband, Bruce, of Glenville, Minn., Julie Steltzner of Mason City, Tracy Harty and husband, Scott, of Claremont, Minn., Jodie Orfield, and husband, Chad, of Mason City; six great grandchildren; one brother, Don Steltzner, of Traverse, Mich.; one sister, Mary Felton, of Chesapeake, Ohio, one sister-in-law, Jean Ambro-son, and husband, Runt, of Leland, Iowa; and many close friends.

RUDD - Jeffery T. Crooks, 42, died Wednesday (June 4, 2003) at his home in Jackson-ville, Florida.

MASON CITY - Gena Tagesen, 102, of 302 2nd St. N.E., Mason City, died Monday (June 23, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett with Rev. Selmer G. Hernes officiating. Burial will be at the Kensett Cemetery.

Gena was born October 31, 1900, in Kensett, to Andrew O. and Thora (Skar) Bratrud. She attended public school in Brookfield Township.

Gena worked as a waitress and kitchen helper at the Bratrud-Skar restaurant in Hanlontown.

She was united in marriage to Wilbur Nagel on May 9, 1923, in Mason City and they lived in Kensett for a short time and then moved to Mason City. Wilbur died in 1940.

On June 6, 1944, Gena was united in marriage to Henry Tagesen, of Mason City, in Albert Lea, Minn.

Gena took great pride in the home that her husband Henry had built. She lived there until she was 99 years old and then moved to the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Gena enjoyed raising flowers, canning tomatoes, and cooking. She looked forward to having coffee and cookies with her family and friends. At family celebrations Gena enjoyed five generations of family gathered together.

She was a member of Beth-any Lutheran Church in Kensett.

Gena is survived by a step- daughter, Shirley (Don) Havnen of Mason City; six step- grandchildren, Kathy (Don) Banks of Clear Lake, Mary Lin (Doug) Kolb of Clear Lake, Don (Jennifer) Havnen, Jr. of Kansas City, Kan., Jim (Pam) Havnen of Ankeny, Matt Havnen of Mason City, and Mark (Connie) Havnen of Florida; 10 step great-grandchildren, Chad Banks of Mason City, Jeff (Kris) Bolstad of An-dover, Minn., Chris (Mike) Hatfield of Huxley, Iowa, Jeremy (Debbie) Havnen and Jon Havnen all of Louisiana, Andy and Garret Havnen both of Kansas City, Kan., Leah, Sam, and Thomas Havnen all of Florida; five step-great-great-grandchildren, Jeremy Jr., Joshua, Jordan, Brianna, and Anna; sister-in-law, Gladys (Pete) Adams of Mason City; Geneva Fletcher of Hamburg, Iowa.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

CHARLES CITY - Robert P. Cerwinske, 67, of Charles City passed away Friday (June 27, 2003) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City of natural causes.

Robert was born in Charles City on June 22, 1938, the son of Albert and Lois (Bonsall) Cerwinske. He attended Charles City High School and received his G.E.D. while in military service.

Robert served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years then was a mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Charles City for 15 years, retiring in 1991.

He was united in marriage to Joan C. Rodamaker on October 8, 1955, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. They moved back to Charles City area after he retired from the Air Force in 1975.

He is survived by his son, Steven Cerwinske of Charles City; three daughters, Sheri Bayne of Citra, Fla., Sheila Alden of Titusville, Fla., and Sarah Straub of Bunker Hill Ill.; one sister, Betty Ball of Ionia; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ST. ANSGAR - Frieda Janzow Crouch, 93, of St. Ansgar, died Thursday (June 26, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Center, St Ansgar.

Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with Rev. Byron Northwick officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Cem-etery, St. Ansgar.

Frieda Wilhelmina Beata Janzow was born on August 17, 1909, the eldest child of Elisabeth and August Janzow, and the first granddaughter of the first pastor of Imman-uel Lutheran Church, the Rev. Edward Wiegner.

She was baptized August 29, 1909, by the Rev. Paul Brammer at Immanuel Luth-eran Church in St. Ansgar, and was confirmed March 25, 1923, at Immanuel.

She graduated from St. Ansgar High School in May 1927.

She received a teaching certificate in 1929 from Iowa State Teachers College, and began her teaching career at the Clyde school north of St Ansgar.

She also taught in rural Newberg Township, and then for eleven years taught the third and fourth grades in the St. Ansgar Public Schools.

In 1944, she was extended a call from Emmaus Lutheran in Denver, Colo., and she taught the fifth and sixth grades in the parish school.

On August 18, 1946, she was united in marriage to George A. Crouch, a watchmaker in Denver, where they made their home.

After her mother's death in 1955, the couple moved to St. Ansgar to make a home for her father. In 1963 they returned to Denver when Mr. Crouch became owner of Crouch Jewelry.

He passed away in 1969, and Frieda continued to run the business until her retirement in 1977.

In 1981, she moved back to St. Ansgar to live in the house where she was born and to be near family members.

She was very active in Naomi Circle, and LWML at Immanuel, and the IC Club. She enjoyed music, handwork, quilting, gardening, and especially being with family.

She entered Good Samaritan Center, St Ansgar, in May, 1999, where she resided until she was called to be with the Lord on June 26, 2003.

She is survived by six brothers and sisters; Ludwig Janzow and Clara Meyerhoff, Davis Calif., Bertram (Anita) Janzow, Yorba Linda, Calif., Richard (Georgia) Janzow, Palos Heights, Ill., Adele Dieterich and Arthur (Mary) Janzow, of St. Ansgar.

She is also survived by 12 nieces and nephews, 20 great nieces and nephews, and two great, great nephews, and the Christian congregation.

MASON CITY - Helen Marie (Hinich) Schauf, 85, of 804 N. Connecticut Ave., died Thursday evening (June 26, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Helen Marie Schauf was born October 13, 1917, in Wakefield, Mich., the first born child of Michael, Sr. and Kathern (Hodak) Hinich. She was active in all sports while growing up and was playfully titled a tomboy by her siblings.

Helen moved to the Mason City area as a youngster and remained in the area most of her life. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1937.

Helen began a long and successful career in retail sales, working in Ottumwa, Waterloo and Mason City. She was employed by various clothing stores in the area, such as Lundberg's Ladies Ready to Wear and as a manager with Younkers women's wear.

On March 30, 1974, at her home, Helen was united in marriage to Harvey R. Schauf.

Some of Helen's leisure activities and interests in-cluded her enjoyment of Lawrence Welk and Guy Lombardo music, the color pink, roses, watching television news stories and spending time with her family. She treasured camping and fishing vacations with her husband, Harvey and other relatives, particularly to Minne-sota.

Helen is survived by her husband, Harvey Schauf of Mason City; one son, James Bovaird of Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Cynthia Pettit of Mason City; one brother, Michael Hinich, Jr. and his wife, Tina, of Clear Lake, and one sister, Nancy Walters and her husband, Raymond, of Mason City. She was the proud grandmother of Dawn Barray of Mason City and three great-grandchildren, Kayla Nuehring, Koby Barragy and Krystl Barragy. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends will also sadly miss Helen.

She graduated from the Imm-aculate Conception School in 1940. After graduation she attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Sioux City. On October 28, 1944, she was united in marriage to Raymond Apel. Patricia retired in 1985 after a life-long career in nursing. She was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and St. Theresa's Circle. Her great love and enjoyment was spending time with her family and friends.

Etta was born August 24, 1906, in Britt, the daughter of Eph-raim Husted and Myrtle Ione (Chapman) Cummings. She attended rural Orthel No. 2 school.

Etta farmed with her brother Fred, and sister Lulla in the Britt area and later in the Clear Lake area. After retiring from the farm they moved into Clear Lake in 1972.

She was a very loving, kind, and self-taught person. She enjoyed gardening, and raising flowers. She was a member of the Sing and Sew Club for sixty years until it disbanded, the Clear Lake Senior Citizens since 1972, and was a friend of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

The Cumming's family belief in education was very strong. Etta's life dream was realized this year as she started the Cumming's Family Scholarship for the Clear Lake School System.

Survivors include cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Fred and sister Lulla.

HAMPTON — Harlan D. Smit, 66, died Thursday, (June 26, 2003) at Hampton Health Care Center after a long illness.

Harlan Dale Smit was born February 3, 1937, in rural Meservey to Ben and Ida (Koenen) Smit. He attended school and graduated from Meservey High School in 1956.

Harlan then worked for Davis and Heath Construction of Clear Lake and built the Sheffield Elementary School.

On November 21, 1959, Harlan was united in marriage with Joanne LaFontaine at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell. They moved to Sheffield in 1973.

He was engaged in farming for several years prior to working at Sheffield Brick and Tile Company until it closed. Harlan then worked for Sukup Manufacturing until his illness caused his retirement in 1988.

Harlan attended First Baptist Church in Sheffield for several years. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and taxidermy work. Harlan is survived by his wife, Joanne; daughters, Renee (Gary) Schaefer, Karla (Jeff) Rooney and Kim Smit all of Sheffield; five grandchildren, Kayla and Matt Schaefer and Justin, Kyle and Emily Rooney; mother, Ida Smit, Belmond; sisters and brother, Betty Nedved, Garner, Ione Hayungs, Clear Lake, Lois Jenison, Belmond, Alvin (Jackie) Smit, Thornton, JoAnn (Mike) Ritter, Goodell; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was united in marriage to Connie Joyce Kristiansen on May 19, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Orville farmed his entire life and retired at the age of 88.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon and her husband, Keith Johnson, of Goodell; a son, Ernest, and his wife, Karen, of rural Riceville; three grandchildren, Michelle Ann and her husband, Ned Burmeister, Darrin and his wife, Kim Johnson, and Kristian Schofield. St. ANSGAR — Selma A. Perkins, 95, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday (June 28. 2003) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

MINNEAPOLIS — Daniel Christopher Peik died at his home in Minneapolis Friday (June 27, 2003).

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating.

Inurnment will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery in Albert Lea, Minn., at a later date.

There is no visitation, but the family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

DAVID J. NOLTE

CEDAR RAPIDS — David J. Nolte, 86, of 3060 Wilson Ave., S.W., Apt. 3, Cedar Rapids died Sunday (June 29, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-Cedar Rapids.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Wesley United Methodist church in Vinton with the Rev. Rose Blank officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Overton-Steenhuyse Funeral Home in Vinton. An Order of the Eastern Star and Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m.

David Jasper Nolte was born July 27, 1916, on a farm near Sargeant, Minn., to Otto and Mary Harriet McCord Nolte. He was valedictorian of the Elkton High School class of 1935 and later initiated the annual Elkton High School reunion. On November 23, 1944, he married Mary Zoe Ellsworth in Hampton, Iowa, where the couple made their home until 1963 when they moved to Vinton.

David worked for J. Verald Brown as a farm laborer, for Mary Jane Foods as a route salesman, and then for Hawk Bilt Manufacturing in Vinton until his retirement.

David joined the Masons in 1943 and has been active ever since. While living in Hampton he was Past Master of Anchor Lodge #191, Past High Priest of Anchor Lodge Chapter #69 of the Royal Arch Masons and District Lecturer. Since moving to Vinton, he has held all the offices of the local lodge, was Past Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star and served as Grand Chaplain for the State of Iowa in 1984. He was also an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, enjoyed bowling and being involved in the Act I Community Theater in Vinton.

In December of 2000, he moved to Cedar Rapids. As a result of failing health and a recent fall, David’s death came peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday June 29, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, at the age of 86 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Charles and Allen, and one sister, Marian Rodemeyer.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Zoe, Cedar Rapids; two sons, David M. Nolte and wife, Mari, Reinbeck, Iowa, C. Ted Nolte, Des Moines; daughter, Anne Nolte, Independence, Iowa; two grandchildren, Ben and Christen Nolte; and three sisters, Doris Schmidt, Iowa Falls, Norma Ferguson and husband, Roy, and Eleanore Horning,both of Iowa City; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

GARNER — Opal M. Hamilton, 87, of Garner, died Sunday (June 29, 2003) at the Westview Care Center, Britt.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, west of Garner.

Opal Marvea Hamilton, the daughter of Clarence and Edna Josephine (Lovick) Monson, was born June 6, 1916, at Crystal Lake. She attended and graduated from Crystal Lake High School. On October 1, 1938, she was married to Verner James Hamilton at St. Boniface Catholic Church rectory in Garner. They lived in Garner their entire married lives. She loved music, animals and being around people.

Opal was a very active person and enjoyed being a member in many clubs and organizations in Garner. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rosary Society, Garner VFW Auxiliary, Garner Senior Citizens, Bridge Club, 500 Club, Hand and Foot Card Club and the Knitting Club. She knitted mittens and caps for the RSVP group and was recognized for this effort.

Opal is survived by her three children; Marvea Smidt and her husband, Ron, of Britt, Laurel Christianson and her husband, Mark, of Minneapolis, and Timothy Hamilton and his wife, Darla, of Belmond; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Verner “Ham” Hamilton; her parents; a grandson, Matthew Todd Honken; a sister, Sadie Huisinga; and a brother, Marlen Monson.

She will always be remembered.

REBA RUTH FLESHNER

WICKENBURG, Ariz.— Mrs. Reba Ruth Fleshner, 85, a resident of Wickenburg, Ariz., died Jan. 15, 2003, at her sister and brother-in-law’s home in Congress, Ariz. She was a former resident of Clear Lake, Iowa.

Mrs. Fleshner was born June 8, 1917, in Marshall County, the daughter of Nettie Gibbs-Howard and Fred Howard. She graduated from Marshalltown High School and went on to attend Iowa State Teachers College.

She married Vernon Fleshner on April 12, 1936. They were married for 60 years.

Mrs. Fleshner was a former member of the First Congregational Church of Mason City and a past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star. She also belonged to the FDP and Home Improvement Clubs and was very active with the Clear Lake Senior Citizens’ Center where she volunteered much of her time.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; daughter, Beverly Fleshner; sister, Marie Kunzman; and close friend, John Frahm.

Survivors include her grandson, Dan K. Huntley of Carrollton, Texas; grandaughter, Wendy J. Yanney of Grand Prairie, Texas; great-grandchildren, Allison, Kaitlyn and Hannah Huntley of Carrollton, Texas, and Rayce, Ryan and Reid Yanney of Grand Prairie, Texas; sister, Ginny O’Hagan of Congress, Ariz., and brother, Glenn Howard of Coarsegold, Calif.

A memorial service for Reba will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Clear Lake Christian Church, 302 U.S. Highway 18 West with Pastor Mark Young officiating.

Reba was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was also the world’s greatest optimist. She will be missed by all.

OLGA BEULAH FLATNESS

NORTHWOOD — Olga Beulah (Bakken) Flatness, 85, of Northwood, died Satuday (June 28, 2003) at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center, Manly, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, Iowa with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Burial will be at the Deer Creek Cemetery, Carpenter.

Olga was born on August 11, 1917, at Silver Lake, Iowa to Ole and Ida (Johnson) Bakken. She attended Silver Lake country school. She completed the eighth grade and always had a desire to learn, read, do math and memorize poetry.

Olga went to Silver Lake Lutheran Church. She confirmed her baptism on May 29, 1932.

Olga married Irving Flatness on March 15, 1942, in Clarks Grove, Minn. They farmed until 1984 near Carpenter, Iowa. In 1995 they moved to Northwood, on Shellrock Drive. Irving cared for Olga in their home until November 1, 2000. She was cared for and loved by the nursing staff at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center, where they treat you like you are one big family.

Deer Creek Lutheran Church was a big part of Olga’s life. She was involved in circle, aid, Sunday worship, but she will be known most of all for her making of quilts and finishing them around the edges after do- day. Olga was a fantastic grandma. Olga kept busy on the farm, helping with chores, canning, sewing, gardening, working puzzles, was a delicious baker, making doughnuts, painting, driving tractor and crocheting. There were so many ways she kept busy. Busy hands are happy hands. Olga always had a smile to give you and a kind word. She had Alzheimer’s ... it took her memory, but not her spunk.

Sharon, her daughter, welcomed her to her heavenly home. She preceded her Mom 31 years ago, June 27.

Olga was the youngest of six children. Her siblings all preceded her in death — Almer, Oscar, Alice, Elvina and Joeseph — as did her parents.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Irving of Northwood; son David and wife Brenda of Clear Lake; grandson, Doug and wife Sara of Lincoln, Neb., and their girls, Rumer and Macy; granddaughter, Dawn and husband Jason Wright of Lockridge, Iowa and their children, Abigail, Andrew and Mathew; grandson Scott of Des Moines.
