FORREST ELDON HODGSON

PLEASANTVILLE - Forrest Eldon Hodgson, 92, died Wednesday (June 18, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Healthcare Facility in Mason City of natural causes.

Mr. Hodgson, a long-time resident of Pleasantville, had farmed in Marion County for nearly 40 years. He was the last surviving son of Labon Hodgson, who was widely regarded as one of Iowa's leading and most innovative agribusinessmen of the first 50 years of the 20th century.

Forrest was born Dec. 5, 1910, to Labon and Hattie Hodgson. He was their fourth and youngest child. In 1930, Mr. Hodgson graduated from Pleasantville High School and entered Iowa State University, where he pledged Theta Nu Epsilon fraternity and major-ed in farm management.

He married Veva Vernon, and together they had two sons, Rodney Lyle and Donald Scott, and a daughter, Sandra. Both sons preceded him in death, as did Mrs. Hodgson.

Mr. Hodgson farmed in Pleasantville from 1934 until l963, when he and Mrs. Hodgson moved to California, where he engaged in real es-tate sales and was associated with the Orange County School System.

Upon his retirement in 1975, the Hodgsons returned to Iowa and began spending winters in Arizona.

He was a lifetime member of the Pleasantville Church of Christ and a committed Christian.

He and Mrs. Hodgson were married for 69 years when she died in 2001.

Forrest Hodgson was a member of the Farm Bureau and a dedicated Republican.

He is survived by his daughter, Sandy Blodgett, and her husband, Dr. Gary Blodgett; their three children, eight-grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ in Pleasantville.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Mason Funeral Home in Pleasant-ville, with the family present from 5:30 pm to 7 p.m.

The family requests that any memorials be made to the Pleasantville Church of Christ and/or the Hospice of North Iowa.

CHARLES CITY - Larry Crooks, 58, a resident of 2004 Airy Acres Lane, Charles City, died Thursday (June 19, 2003) at his residence.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, with the Revs. Dennis Niezwaag and David Werges officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.

KANAWHA - Helen Gaye Thorson, 87, of Kanawha, died Thursday (June 19, 2003) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church in Kanawha with Jenelle Siffring, AiM, officiating. Burial will take place in Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha.

JENNIFER L. VANCE

CLEAR LAKE - Jennifer L. Vance, 27, of Clear Lake, formerly of Osage and Sac City, died suddenly Wednesday (June 18, 2003) at her home.

Jennifer was born May 31, 1976, in Osage, the daughter of John and Merry Vance. She attended Osage Schools and graduated in 1995 from Sac Community Schools in Sac City.

After high school Jennifer moved to Clear Lake. While in Clear Lake she was involved in various activities at Opportunity Village and also worked part-time at Subway.

Jennifer enjoyed family and friends, music, reading and taking naps.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Mr. Gary Gilbert officiating. Interment will be at the Osage Cemetery in Osage.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

She is survived by her mother, Merry Vance, of Sac City; father, John Vance, of Osage; sister, Rebecca Morenz (John), of Red Oak, Iowa; paternal grandmother, Dorothy Vance, of Osage; maternal grandmother, Iola Isenberger, of Osage; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded by a brother, Richard Vance; mat-ernal grandfather, Warren Isenberger; paternal grand-father, Joseph Vance; aunt, Georgia Isenberger Kerch.

NORA SPRINGS - Royden M. Severson, 77, of 512 First St. S.W. in Nora Springs, died Friday (June 20, 2003) at Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 101 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Ruth Hansen, officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs, where full military honors will be conducted by members of H.D.S. American Legion Post # 449, Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Royden M. Severson Memorial Fund.

Roy was born Aug. 15, 1925, at Scarville, the son of Anton and Gertie (Johnson) Severson. He was a 1943 graduate of Scarville High School, Scar-ville.

Roy served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, until his discharge in the fall of 1946.

On Aug. 31, 1947, he was united in marriage to Lois Larson at Ossian Lutheran Church, Ossian. He later attended Luther College at Decorah, graduating in 1949.

After a number of years in retail management, Roy and Lois owned and operated The Family Bowling Center in Mason City rom 1958 to 1973. In 1975 they owned and operated the Stardust Lanes, in Nora Springs, until 1983. Roy also built Nordic Lanes, in Northwood, in 1977.

After retiring, they made their home in Sun City West, Ariz., until March of 2003 when Roy became ill.

Roy enjoyed all sports, especially bowling and golf. He was an avid Cubs and Diamondbacks fan.

In 1983 he was inducted into the Mason City Bowling Association Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife, Lois (Larson) Severson, of Nora Springs; four sons, Charles Severson and special friend, Karen Anderson, of Peoria, Ariz.; Jim Severson and his wife, Cheryl, of Nora Springs; Mark Severson and his wife, Mariam, of New Concord, Ohio; Tim Severson and his wife, Lori, of Ankeny; grandchildren, Travis Severson, Jana Severson, Adam Severson, Abbey Cox and her husband, David, Audrey Severson, Amanda Severson, A. Mark Severson, Ashley Severson, Katlin Severson, and Connor Severson; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Don Severson, of Marshalltown; a sister, SeDell Ofestadal, of Grand Meadow, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Biford, Noble, and Stanley; a sister, Gladys Johnson; and a great-grandchild, Surrender Peace Cox.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Maxine Ann Meshek, 69, of 1909 Yorktown Ave., died Wednesday (June 18, 2003) following a lengthy battle with lung disease.

NORTHWOOD - Guy A. Olson, 75, of Northwood, and formerly of Fort Dodge, died Friday (June 20, 2003) at Trinity Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge, with the Rev. David Grindberg and the Rev. Carroll Lang officiating. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.

Surviving is his wife, Janice; two sons, Larry, of Van Horn, Iowa and Tony, of Hawaii; three stepdaughters, Shelley Robson and her husband, Dan, of Forest City, Lisa Irving and her husband, Matt, of North Liberty, Anjanette Goetz and her husband, Bill, of Milwaukee, Wis.; seven grandchildren; five stepgrand-children; two great-grandchildren; brother, Eugene, of Milwaukee, Wis.; stepmother, Evelyn Olson, of McHenry, Ill.; mother-in-law, Alice Olson, of Northwood.

Guy was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Linda (Stenzel) Olson; and his first wife, Frances.

Guy will be remembered for his good humor, energy, and ability to talk to anyone. He was dedicated to his family, friends and compassionate to many more. He was an ex-cellent coach, leader and person. He will be missed and always loved.

Guy A. Olson was born Aug. 27, 1927 in Ellison Bay, Wis. He graduated from Gilb-raltar High School in Fish Creek, Wis. in 1945.

After flunking out of the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and Door Kewanee Normal in Algoma, Wis., he graduated with a B.A. in Social Studies from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa in 1949.

His M.A. was in Guidance and Counseling from Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind. in 1962. He did additional graduate work at UNI and Drake, where he received his administrative endorsement, Stetson-Deland, Fla. and Indiana University.

Teaching and coaching were his early careers. He spent his first year teaching at Hinsdale, Mont. From then on it was Iowa -Baldwin, Alpha, Center Point, Patterson, Palmer (coached a softball team to state in 1958) and New Hartford where he served as Junior and Senior High School principal. He served as Guidance Counsultant first in Butler County and then in Butler and Frank-lin counties where he coordinated unique high school summer enrichment classes.

From 1968 to 1975 he was the Guidance Consultant for the Joint County Schools for Webster, Wright, and Hamilton counties.

From 1975-93 he served Arrowhead Area Education Agency, Fort Dodge, as Guidance Coordinator and Staff Development Coordinator.

Upon retiring he became an independent consultant continuing to do the staff development coordination.

In 1998 he served as Staff Development Coordinator in Lakeland AEA in Cylinder. From 1998 until recently he did team building workshops with educational and professional organizations. He al-ways said he was a salesman of education.

His community involvements included: Christ Lutheran Church - Sunday School teacher and chairperson three different times, St. Olaf Lutheran Church -served as AAL Branch recorder for several years, Church of the Damascus Road - this is a prison ministry where he served as a council member and vice president for several years, Western Iowa Synod governing council member for three years, Iowa Lutheran Campus Ministry committee member for six years, Planned Parenthood advisory committee member, Citizens Community Credit Union Board member from 1988 through 2003, president Fort Dodge Woman's Softball Association - coached many fast, slow, and co-ed teams. Was elected to the Fort Dodge Softball Hall of Fame in 2000, Civilian Service Club - charter member and served as its second President, Sons of Norway Fort Dodge Charter member.

His professional involvement include: ISEA member, Life NEA member, Iowa Counseling, Association member - served as President for two years, State Staff Development members-served as President for three years, one of 16 founders of the Northwest Iowa Leadership Academy.

ALBERT ROGOTZKE

SANBORN, Minn. - Albert Rogotzke, 69, of Sanborn, Minn., died Friday (June 20, 2003) at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield, Minn., and from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sanborn, Minn. The clergy will be the Rev. William Ritchie and Mr. Jim Hofferbert, with interment at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Sanborn, Minn.

Albert Rogotzke was born July 8, 1933, in Sanborn, Minn. the son of Albert H. and Myrtle (Klasnya) Rogotzke.

Albert married Helen Moody on March 31, 1962, at Zion Lutheran Church in Sanborn, Minn. The couple has lived and farmed near Saborn their entire life.

Albert was a life-long member of Zion Evangelical Luth-eran Church in Sanborn and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Sanborn, Minn.; children, Susan and husband, Brian Gedemer, of West Bend, Wis. and their children -Katrina, Daniella, and Liana; Albert E. "Rusty" and wife, Kathy Rogotzke, of Charles City, Iowa and their children - Sarah and Peter; William and wife, Konnie Rogotzke, of Sanborn, Minn. and their children - Wendy, George, and Henry; Howard and wife, Ann Rogotzke, of Columbia Heights, Minn. and their children - Elise and Benjamin; and Laura and husband, Joel Alvstad, of Windom, Minn. and their children - Josephine and Parker; his mother, Myrtle Rogotzke, of Sanborn, Minn.; a brother, Robert and wife, Delores Rogotzke, of Fairfax, Minn.; sisters, Betty Ann and husband, Donald Kurth, of Hut-chinson, Minn., and Mary Jane Rogotzke, of Bloomington, Minn.; and two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Rogotzke, of Sanborn, Minn. and Sharon Rogotzke of Sanborn, Minn.

HELEN GAYE THORSON

KANAWHA - Helen Gaye Thorson, 87, passed away Thursday (June 19, 2003) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church with Janelle Siffring, AiM, officiating. Burial will take place in Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha.

Visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha and will continue one hour prior to services at the church Monday.

Helen, the daughter of Edwin and Marie (Johnson) Varo, was born Oct. 18, 1915, in Wright County, Iowa. She attended country school and graduated from Kanawha High School.

Helen was united in marriage to Oren (Buryl) Thorson of Elmore, Minn., in 1935. Most of their married life was lived in Kanawha.

Helen was baptized and confirmed at the Kanawha Lutheran Church and was a member of the Mary Friendship Honor Circle. She was also an honorary member of the Norway Telephone Company where she served on the telephone board. Helen had a love for office work and served as the Kanawha School Board Secretary for 25 years.

Left to cherish her memory are a son, Gary and his wife, Carmin, of Garner; three grandchildren, Todd and his wife, Jill, of Lake Mills, Tara of New Hope, Minn., and Tim and his wife, Erica, of Des Moines; two great-grandchildren, Makenzie and Dalton Thorson of Lake Mills; a sister, Ruth Johnson, of Banning, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Abe Thompson of Las Vegas, Nev.; and nephews and nieces.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Buryl in August 2000; her parents; and a sister, Lois Thompson.

TRIPOLI, Iowa - Ruth M. Gitch, 79, died Friday (June 20, 2003) at Allen Mem-orial Hospital in Waterloo from injuries received in an auto accident.

MAXINE ANN MESHEK

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Maxine Ann Meshek, 69, of 1909 Yorktown Ave., died Wednesday (June 18, 2003) following a lengthy battle with lung disease.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John XXIII Catholic Church in Fort Collins.

Maxine Meshek was born Aug. 13, 1933, in Roselle, Iowa, the second oldest of nine children born to Henry and Rose (Hochstatter) Meisheid. She was baptized, received her First Communion, and was confirmed at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Roselle. She attend school in Dedham, Iowa.

On Sept. 20, 1951, she married William D. Meshek at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dedham. Together they lovingly raised five children in Carroll, Iowa.

Bill and Maxine enjoyed extensive traveling together, having been to 48 of the United States and several islands. Their favorite state was Colorado, vacationing many summers there with their children. In 1982 they had plans to move to Colorado, until Mr. Meshek died unexpectedly of a heart attack. In 1983 Maxine moved to Fort Collins.

After her husband's death, she enjoyed traveling with her oldest son. Her favorite vacation spot was Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Maxine was devoted to her Catholic faith. She was a member of St. John XXIII Catholic Church in Fort Col-lins and was previously a Eucharistic Minister.

Besides traveling, she en-joyed the "3 G's": gardening, going to garage sales, and her grandchildren. She loved the sun and the warm Chinook winds that came down off the Rocky Mountains.

Maxine is survived by five children and their spouses, Marty Meshek of Fort Collins, Colo., Maria (Royal) Wentworth of Mason City, Iowa, Mike (Kim) Meshek of Boulder, Colo., Monte Meshek of Las Vegas, Nev., and Mindi (Dale) Nazarenus of Johnston, Colo.; and four grandchildren who were the sunshine of her life, Kristin and Courtney Wentworth and Ty and Taylor Nazarenus. She is also survived by one brother, Tom Meisheid of Aurora, Colo., and three sisters, Verna Roth of Milford, Iowa, and Phyllis Friedman and Lois Loneman, both of Carroll, Iowa.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill (Oct. 1, 1982); her parents; and four siblings, Virgine Irlbeck, Linda Loneman, Ervin Meisheid and Norman Meisheid.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Maxne A. Meshek Memorial Fund.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Irene G. Billman, 88, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Sunday (June 15, 2003) at View Pointe Villa in San Diego.

A private family funeral service will be held Monday, June 23, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

Irene was born Sept. 19, 1914, the daughter of Carl and Hulga (Johanson) Swanson in Crystal Township, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Burfort "Bue" Billman on Oct. 6, 1934, in Mason City.

Those left to cherish her memory are a sister, Geraldine Schuver of Nora Springs; two grandsons, Tim Burzette of San Diego, Calif., and Todd Burzette of Norman, Okla.; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Hulga Swanson; her husband, Burfort; and one daughter, Chardette Burzette.

Cecil Mildred (Hubbard) Long was born Aug. 21, 1917, in a sod house at Ladner, S.D., a daughter of Harry C. and Violet E. (Clark) Hubbard.

In 1920, the family moved to Chippewa Falls, Wis., where Cecil started school. The family then moved to rural Clear Lake in 1929 where she attended country school. She finished her education at Mason City High School, graduating in 1934.

Following graduation from LaJames School of Beauty, she was employed at the Eadmar Hotel as a beautician.

On August 30, 1945, Cecil became the bride of Howard M. Long, at her parents home in Mason City. The following spring they made their home north of Thornton where she and Howard farmed until their retirement in 1972.

Cecil was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was active unitil a stroke in February 2003. She was also active in the "As You Like It Club."

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 57 years, Howard, and three sons, Terry (Lois), Thornton, Alan (Luann), Waterloo, and Keith (Christie), Waverly. She was blessed with eight grandchildren, Angela (Danny) Stickrod, Monica (Jim) Nadeau, Heather (Nate) Beam, Holly, Shane (fiancé Anna), Gabriel, Luke and Mariah Long. Cecil also enjoyed seven great-grandchildren and was planning to welcome three more this year. She is also survived by one brother, Lynn (Lois) Hubbard, Mason City; a sister, Lois (Russell) Fulghum, Clear Lake; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Ruth Muriel Vierkant was born April 16, 1918, in Belmond to Harry B. and Hazel (Meacham) Vierkant. She attended schools in Cerro Gordo County and Northwest-ern Bible College in Minneapolis.

Ruth married Karl E. Kohler on March 31, 1941, and the couple farmed in Owen township from then until their retirement in 1977.

Karl passed away in 1988 and Ruth moved to Mason City in 1994.

Ruth was a long-time member of the Hanford Commun-ity Church and held many offices in the church and Sunday school. For many summers she taught Vacation Bible School for the American S.S. Union in the North Iowa Area.

Ruth is survived and loving-ly remembered by her three daughters, Bonnie Ewers and her husband, Robert, of Shef-field, LaVonne Gudmundsson and her husband, Allan, of San Diego, Calif., and Rebekah Kohler of Golden Valley, Minn. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Susan Dunn of California, Steven Ewers of Maryland, Diane Smith of Oregon, and Michelle and Bryan Gudmundsson of California; three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Paige and Robert Smith of Oregon; two brothers, Harry and Elmer Vierkant of California; and two sisters, Helen Parks and Hazel Darg of Rockwell.

SAVANNA, Ill. - Wesley J. "Wes" Wilkerson, 64, died Saturday (June 21, 2003) at his home in Savanna, Ill., after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Mt. Carroll Church of God, Mt. Carroll, Ill. Cremation will follow.

Wes was born Jan. 9, 1939, in Austin, Minn., the son of Wesley and Amanda (Bean) Wilkerson. He attended school in Mason City, Iowa, and was a Clinton, Iowa, high school graduate with the class of 1957.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1961.

On Oct. 14, 1972, Wes married Donna Armstrong at the Little Brown Church of Nashua, Iowa. They recently celebrated their 30th anniversary.

For more than 43 years, Wes was involved in the rest-aurant business. For the past 16 years, he and his wife have owned and operated the Kountry Kettle Restaurant in Savanna.

Wes was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Clinton, Iowa, where he served as Sunday school teacher, youth leader and church treasurer. In more recent years, he was actively involved at Northside Church of God, Clinton, Iowa.

Through the years he has enjoyed spending time with his family. He had a special touch when it came to cooking, entertaining, landscaping, gardening and remodeling. He loved to travel, dance and play cards or just visit with friends. His friendship and generosity were his obvious "gifts."

Survivors include his wife, Donna, of Savanna; two dau-ghters, Tara (Blaine) Huston of Fort Benning, Ga., and Amanda Wilkerson of Savanna, Ill.; four sons, Steven (Renee) Wilkerson of Clinton, Iowa, Keith (June) Wilkerson of Washington, Pa., Randy Wilkerson of Ames, Iowa, and Kerry (Rose) Wilkerson of Ames, Iowa; and a stepson, Alan Goldensoph of Camanche, Iowa. He was an awesome "Pappa" to 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; four sisters, Freda Hedrick of Mason City, Iowa, Marjorie (Sam) Booth of Ventura, Iowa, LaDonna Wilkerson of Clinton, Iowa, and Alberta Wilkerson of Mason City, Iowa; four brothers, Loren (Mary) Wilkerson of Low Moor, Iowa, John (Carol) Wilkerson of Calona, Ill., David (Jan) Wilkerson of Coralville, Iowa, and Charles (Mary) Wilkerson of Clinton, Iowa.

Raymond was born Aug. 7, 1922, in Belle Plaine, Iowa, a son of James and Elizabeth (McElroy) McIlrath. He grew up in Mason City, attending Mason City Public Schools.

Ray was united in marriage to Marian Scholl on Jan. 10, 1942, in Rockwell.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in September 1942 and served in Africa and Italy during World War II.

After his honorable discharge in 1945, he returned to Mason City to work as a mechanic for Tag’s Auto Service. After 13 years there, he went to work for Carnation Industries. Ray worked at Carnation for 18 years, seven of those years in Waterloo. He later worked for Plagge Truck Line, retiring in the late 1980s.

Ray enjoyed working on cars, taking care of his lawn and riding his bicycle. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a life- time member of the Mason City V.F.W. Post #733.

Ray is survived by his wife, Marian, of Mason City; three sons, Larry of Mason City, Jim and his wife, Angie, of Groton, Conn., and Richard and his wife, Sherry, of Goldfield, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey McIlrath, Joseph McIlrath, Tracy Hennigar and her husband, Roger, Dawn Wasenius and her husband, Bruce, Christine McIlrath, Jim McIlrath Jr., Autumn McIlrath, Richard McIlrath Jr., and Sean McIlrath; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Violet Shipman of Mason City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sylvia was born June 10, 1917, the daughter of Roy and Josephine (Cummings) Wyant in Mason City.

On Aug. 16, 1939, Sylvia was united in marriage to Lloyd Allen in Waterloo. To this union two children were born. On September 13, 1944, Lloyd died in World War II at sea and was declared missing in action.

Sylvia then remarried on Nov. 1, 1947, in Albert Lea, Minn., to William Perham and to this union two children were born.

Sylvia enjoyed staying home and taking cared of her family. In her spare time, she could be found crocheting, doing embroidery work and crossword puzzles or reading mysteries.

Those thankful for having shared in Sylvia’s life include her children, Dr. Jeffrey Allen of Kokomo, Ind., Sandra Mix and her husband, Jack, of Mason City, Susan Myers and her husband, Ray, of Mason City, and Michael Perham of Mason City; two sisters, Alice Williams of Greeley, Colo., and Betty Templeton and her husband, Loyd, of Mason City; two brothers, Ray Andrews and his wife, Sharon, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Richard Andrews and his wife, Sharon, of Evans, Colo., six grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

FORT DODGE — Hilda Martzahn Becker, 98, of Fort Dodge, died Monday (June 23, 2003) at the Hamilton Hospital in Webster City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge, with the Rev. James Zuehl officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Survivors include Donna Becker, of Mason City, Bonita Klaver and her husband, Howard, of Kamrar, Iowa, and Helene Tietjen, of Dixon, Ill. Other survivors are four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Becker; her parents, John and Augusta (Kiehn) Martzahn; an infant sister; and a son-in-law, Richard Tietjen.

Hilda Martzahn was born on a farm near Greene, but soon moved to the town of Greene. After graduating from Greene High School, she enrolled at Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa. After receiving her junior college diploma, she taught third and fourth grades in Allison for one year.

She then returned to UNI to get her B.A. degree. While there, Hilda was given membership in three national honorary fraternities. She was very active in college activities and served as president of her class.

After graduation, Hilda taught English and debate in the Lake Mills High School for six years. She then married William H. Becker, a science teacher and they lived in Northwood, Grinnell, Manchester, Webster City, and Fort Dodge.

Following her marriage, Hilda Becker devoted her time to the family and church activities. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church for more than 40 years.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Lydia circle of the church.

She graduated from Northwood High School in 1940.

Doris Elaine Brown married William Woodrow (Woody) Hudson on Sept. 20, 1945, in Hot Springs, Ark. They lived in Northwood during their married life.

Doris was a life member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Throughout her adult life she was very active in the local VFW, enjoying the companionship of good friends and the many activities sponsored by the VFW.

She was well known as a wonderful cook and enjoyed bowling in a women’s league for many years, retiring from the auditor’s office in 1987. She kept in touch with her many friends there through monthly luncheons as long as she was able.

Most important in Doris’ life were her children, grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Cora B. Pixley was born on Oct. 17, 1912, in Worth County near Northwood, the daughter of Ole and Marie Bergo.

She was baptized on Nov. 24, 1912, and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation on May 15, 1927. She attended and graduated from Northwood High School.

After completing her schooling she worked for the Worth County Co-Op Oil Company and for the ASC office in Northwood as a program clerk for several years until her retirement.

She was united in marriage to Clayton Pixley, on Sept. 2, 1935. He preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1969.

She enjoyed flowers, crocheting and making Afghans.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church and the church circle in Northwood.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Lois Bergo, of Northwood; a brother-in-law, Claus Pixley of Long Beach, Calif.; special friends, Kenneth Roppe of Northwood, Bonnie Roppe and Sherrie Winter of Rochester, Minn., and Karen Emanuel of Lyle, Minn., as well as other friends.

Jack was born Sept. 1, 1926, in Cozad, Neb., the son of Ray and Hattie Scott. He graduated from Cozad High School in 1943 then served in the U.S. Navy for two and one half years during World War II.

Following his discharge, he attended the University of Nebraska for four years.

Jack was recalled into active duty serving in the Korean Conflict for two years.

He married Gwendolyn Thomas on Aug. 19, 1950.

Jack worked for Travelers Insurance Company for 14 years. The Scotts moved to Mason City in 1966 when Jack purchased Gus Muehe Insurance Agency.

Through the years, Jack consolidated other agencies into his own and in 2001 merged his business into Becker Insurance Agency.

Jack was a member of the First United Methodist Church, past board member at the church, past president Cerro Gordo Independent Insurance Agents, Mason City Rotary, Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, past chairman United Way, VFW and the Masonic Lodge.

CLEAR LAKE — Elma E. Hunt, 82, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (June 22, 2003) at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Clear Lake Public Library or Oakwood Care Center in memory of Elma E. Hunt.

Elma was born June 10, 1921, in Ryan, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Bertha (Hawker) Arnold. She attended school in Ryan.

Elma married Gordon Hunt on Oct. 12, 1937, in Wyoming, Iowa. They have lived in Clear Lake since 1941.

She worked at Halford’s Café, the Clear Lake Bakery, Fareway Bakery in Mason City, and retired from Damon’s Store in Mason City.

Elma enjoyed needlework, bird watching, growing flowers in her garden, reading, cooking and especially being with her family.

Elma is survived by her husband, Gordon Hunt, of Clear Lake; three children, Donna Johnson and her husband, Lowell, of DeWitt, Ron Hunt, of Dubuque, and Sandra Meyer and her husband, Jerry, of Coon Rapids, Minn.; six grandchildren, Brent Johnson and his wife, Michele, of Landstuhl, Germany, Brad Johnson and his wife, Sherry, of Iowa City, Lori Hunt, of Des Moines, Leah Folks and her husband, Tom, of Milwaukee, Wis., David Meyer, of Blaine, Minn., and Jennifer Skuodas and her husband, Brad, of Sioux City; three great-grandchildren, Karis Johnson, Benjamin Folks and Wyatt Skuodas.

Elma was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Donald, Bill, and Dean (infant brother) Arnold; two sisters, Hazel Stout and Jean Van Eman.

NANCY JEAN HINES

HAZLETON, Pa. — Nancy Jean Hines, of Hazleton, Pa., passed away suddenly Saturday (June 21, 2003) of an apparent blood clot. She was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Moore, of Hampton, Iowa and sister, of Dr. Bill Moore, of Hampton and Marilyn Moore, of Des Moines.

Nancy was born May 21, 1950, in Hampton, and graduated from Hampton High School in 1968. She received her BA degree from the University of Iowa in December of 1971, with a double major in English and Spanish, and later got her Masters degree as a reading specialist from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. Nancy was an accomplished musician.

Her three children survive her, Teresa Hines, of Allentown, Pa., Wendy Hines, of Philadelphia, Pa. and Brian Hines, a senior at Bloomsburg University. Her husband preceded her in death in 1988 of a massive heart attack.

Nancy had just retired from teaching and had been hired by Prudential in Ocean City, Md. to start a new career selling real estate July 1st.

Visitation will be Friday with funeral services following visitation at Beltz Petrilli Funeral Home, 235 E. Broad St. Hazleton, PA 18201.

DR. MARK A. LIEDER

ESTES PARK, Colo. — Dr. Mark A. Leider, well known Estes Park realtor and classic car enthusiast, died peacefully Monday (June 23, 2003) after a two year battle with cancer.

He was born Jan. 13, 1949, to parents, Lyle and Betty (Leggett) Lieder in Boston, Mass.

He graduated high school in Spencer, Iowa; received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa and a Masters of Divinity, Doctorate of Ministry from the School of Theology in Claremont, Calif.

He joined the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served United Methodist Churches in New Hartford, Fayette, Parkersburg, Woodward, and Iowa Falls.

He retired from professional ministry in 1995 and moved to Estes Park after having been a visitor for 30 years.

He worked at Coldwell Banker Realty and was a founding member of the Estes Park Car Club.

He was passionate about restoring vintage automobiles and collecting antiques.

He loved hiking, rock climbing and enjoyed intellectual and physical challenges.

He is survived by partner, Pam McCarthy, and her daughter, Natalie Long, of Estes Park, Colo.; son, Chris Lieder with the U.S. Air Force in Abilene, Texas; daughter, Emily Lieder, of Minneapolis, Minn.; brother, David Lieder, of Stewartville, Minn.; sisters, Becky Smith, of Iowa City, Iowa, Deb Kiesey, of Vinton, Iowa, and Rachel Lieder-Simeon, of Eagle River, Alaska; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Community Church of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colo., with the Rev. Mark Evans officiating.

MERVIN L. THOMPSON

CLEAR LAKE — Mervin L. Thompson, 77, of 15204 Linden St., died Sunday (June 22, 2003) at home.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. Scott Duffus officiating. Interment will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. The casket will be closed.

Mervin was born April 21, 1926, in Britt, the son of Huron S. and Edna (Dallman) Thompson. He was baptized May 9, 1926, at First Lutheran Church in Britt and confirmed March 17, 1940, at St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City. He attended schools in Mason City then served in the US Navy aboard the USS Idaho during World War II.

Mervin married Irene Swift in 1947. He was employed by Marshall and Swift Laundry for 25 years and also owned and operated a furniture stripping business for many years.

Mervin was a member of St. James Lutheran Church for 67 years.

He is survived by his wife, Irene M. DORIS ELAINE HUDSON

NORTHWOOD — Doris Elaine (Brown) Hudson, 81, of Northwood, died Saturday (June 21, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Internment will take place at the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 S. in Northwood.

Doris was born in Northwood, Iowa, on March 21, 1922, to Irvin and Thea (Throne) Brown.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Lydia circle of the church.

She graduated from Northwood High School in 1940.

Doris Elaine Brown married William Woodrow (Woody) Hudson on Sept. 20, 1945, in Hot Springs, Ark. They lived in Northwood during their married life.

Doris was a life member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Throughout her adult life she was very active in the local VFW, enjoying the companionship of good friends and the many activities sponsored by the VFW.

She was well-known as a wonderful cook and enjoyed bowling in a women’s league for many years.

She worked in the Worth County Courthouse during her working years, retiring from the auditor’s office in 1987. She kept in touch with her many friends there through monthly luncheons as long as she was able.

Most important in Doris’ life were her children, grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Left to cherish her memory are a daughter, Ann Sletten, and her husband, Mervin, of Mason City; two sons, Don Hudson and his wife, Kim, of The Colony, Texas, and John Hudson, of Waxahatchie, Texas; five grandchildren, Brooke Kelsey and her husband, Harland, of Beaverton, Ore., Kristi Sletten and her special friend, Michael Myers, and Katie Sletten, of Mason City, Jamie Stumo and her special friend, David Walthall, and Kevin Hudson, of The Colony, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Skylar Kelsey and McKenzie Myers; a brother, Lynn Brown and his wife, Jan, of Bloomington, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Maurine Hudson, of Marshall, Minn.; a step-son, Dan Hudson and wife, Janet, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

ANNE EXLINE

CHARLES CITY — Anne Exline, of Charles City, passed away early Saturday morning (June 21, 2003). She was a young 71 years old.

Anne will be dearly missed by her husband, Ed; their sons, Steve (Anita) and Mike (special friend, Bernice); her six grandchildren, Michelle (Maziar), Ben (Kristi), Susan, Zach, Heidi, and Kristina; and three and a half great-grandchildren, Jonah, Madeline, Isaac and one great-grandchild due in September; her mother-in-law, Mabel Indahl Exline; and her aunt and dearest friend, Mary Lou Palmros; sister-in-laws, Norma Finley, Donna Sievert and Darlene Exline; friends, Skip and Myrna Ward and Kay Beguhn will also sorely miss her.

Anne was born and raised in Ft. Worth, Texas, before moving to the Charles City area as a teenager.

She married her high school sweetheart and Floyd native, Ed, on Oct. 23, 1948, and they were married for 54 amazing years.

Throughout the years Anne and Ed farmed north of Charles City and raised their two sons to become wrestling champs and college graduates.

Anne loved having fun and experiencing life to its fullest. Friends and family were always being swept up in her good cheer.

Anne was a proud woman, she inspired us all with her ability to bounce back and “get after it”.

Her zest for life was contagious, making the entire room light up in her presence.

Anne and Ed traveled together enjoying long cross-country trips to see family and friends. She also took many opportunities to visit countries around the world with her friends and grandchildren.

She enjoyed long walks, playing bridge, going to the YMCA, golfing with her grandchildren and doing fun, girly things with her granddaughters.

Anne will be remembered for these qualities and for her warm and generous heart. We will miss her very much, but know that her memory will never be lost, living on through her husband, sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Melissa and John Haase; daughter-in-law, Mary Exline and brother-in-law, Jim Exline.

A memorial service for Anne will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charles City.

Vistation will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the church.

KATHRYN L. DECKER

MASON CITY — Kathryn L. Decker, 96, of Des Moines and formerly of Mason City, died Monday (June 23, 2003) at the Kavanagh House, a hospice facility, in West Des Moines.

According to her wishes she was cremated and there will be no services.

Inurnment will take place at a later date at Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.

Memorials may be directed to the Kathryn L. Decker Memorial Fund in care of her daughter, Rita Knittel, 8865 Sunny Hill Drive, Clive, Iowa 50325.

Kathryn was born July 4, 1906, in Chicago, Ill., to Harry H. and Martha E. (Jacoby) Decker. She moved to Mason City in 1917 and lived here until 1996 when she went to live with her daughter in Clive, Iowa.

Kathryn was united in marriage to Dudley A. Decker who died in 1985.

She is survived by one daughter, Rita Knittel, of Clive; one son, Jay E. Decker II and his wife, Mona, of Port Isabel, Texas; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dudley; and one brother, Milton Decker.
