VIRGINIA MAE RINKER

PERRY — On Sunday (June 8, 2003) at 7:30 p.m., Virginia Mae (Whiton) Rinker, of Perry, Iowa, joined her husband, Harold, and infant daughter, Susan. Her daughter, Julie, and son-in-law, Mike, were at her side.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Perry, with the Rev. Mel Roblee officiating. Burial will be at Violet Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Hastings Funeral Home in Perry. “Celebration of Virginia’s Life” will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Hotel Pattee to reminisce with her family.

Virginia was born in Boone County, Iowa, Jan. 25, 1926, to Russell Rufus Whiton and Winifred Viola (Sayles) Whiton. While growing up on a farm, she attended Liberty country school and graduated from Rippey High School in 1944.

Virginia spent most of her life in Perry. She met her husband, Harold Rinker, while working at Fick’s Ready to Wear, a ladies clothing store in Perry. Harold worked at the neighboring men’s store, Stern & Fields. They met when the men’s store ran out of sacks and Harold went to Fick’s to borrow some.

They were married Sunday, Oct. 3, 1947, at the First United Methodist Church in Perry.

His health failing, Mr. Fick sold the store to the Rinkers. Virginia’s Ready to Wear opened Feb. 15, 1949, and remained at 1207 Second Street for nearly 40 years.

Harold & Virginia both loved Perry and were grateful for their loyal employees and customers who shopped at their store.

After several attempts, a child, Susan Diane, was stillborn in December of 1953 and their spirits were shattered.

Joyfully, on Dec. 12, 1957, another daughter, Julie Rene, was born. A local businessman painted “It’s A Girl” on their store window. Many relatives, close friends, and customers rejoiced with the Ringers.

During the years, Harold & Virginia were involved in many Perry promotions “Midnight Madness” and “Ridiculous Days” were memorable events.

From the mid-60’s to early 70’s, Virginia’s hosted a Teen Board for area girls. Acceptance to the Teen Board was based upon application, scrutinized by the Rinkers. Reputation was important — girls on the Teen Board represented their store.

To be a member of Virginia’s Teen Board was an honor and portrayed the character of those selected. Monthly meetings included instruction on grooming, poise, and apparel, as well as upcoming fashion trends when the Rinkers returned from fashion markets in Chicago, Des Moines, & Minneapolis. The Rinkers held the local franchise for the Miss USA/Miss Universe pageant.

While other retailers helped sponsor the Miss Perry Contest, Virginia & Harold were instrumental in its success. With Harold as emcee, Virginia worked backstage with the contestants who modeled clothing and shoes from local businesses.

One Miss Perry winner was crowned Miss Iowa and attended the Miss USA pageant — a real thrill for the Rinkers and the citizens of Perry.

Throughout the years, the Rinkers were involved in many Perry organizations including Toastmasters, Elks, Masons, and Eastern Star.

At age 21, Virginia became a member of Eastern Star and remained a member throughout her life, becoming a 50-year member in 1997.

Virginia also held several key positions in professional organizations including Perry Soroptomist Club and the Perry Business & Professional Women’s Club. She was a graduate of the Dale & Dorothy Carnegie courses and member of many retailing associations and the Perry Chamber of Commerce.

She was a member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church. When the railroad left Perry in the 1970’s, the Rinker’s business survived. But the farm crisis of the early 80’s was too much for Harold. Concerned that they would lose their lifelong business, home, and savings, he spiraled into a deep depression and took his life on Dec. 13, 1982.

After thoughts of selling the business, Virginia prayed the support of her loyal customers and staff would see her through. She continued operating the clothing store until retiring in August, 1988.

The stress of Harold’s passing, the continuation of running the store while maintaining her home wore on Virginia. In 1998, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. At Julie’s insistence, she came to live with Julie and her family in Mason City who hoped for many years of togetherness.

However, in January of 2000, Virginia required the attention only a nursing home could give. Her memory declining rapidly, the hopes for stories and reminiscing of the past were gone.

Virginia’s final two and a half years were spent at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center in Manly, Iowa, another small railroading community. Virginia kept her sweet disposition — usually smiling and tapping her feet when the polka music played. Virginia was blessed to find such a place with caring staff, cleanliness, and good food.

Virginia’s love for life centered around family, friends, and good food. She loved to laugh and gave great hugs. She had an enormous sweet-tooth. She loved chocolate.

She is survived by her daughter, Julie and favorite son-in-law, Mike Lind, and two grandchildren, Brandon & Dominique Lind, all of Mason City; two brothers Don Whiton and wife, Jo, of Des Moines, and Gale Whiton and wife, Bev, of Perry; three sisters-in-law, Eleanor Whiton and Eldora Whiton both of Perry; and Shirley Whiton McDougal and husband, Dale, of Urbandale; and many wonderful nieces and nephews, whom she cherished.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Susan; her husband, Harold; her brothers, Thurlow, Roland, and Lloyd; and sister, Sylvia.
