EUGENE D. ENABNIT

NORA SPRINGS — Eugene D. Enabnit, 80, of Marshalltown and formerly of Nora Springs, died Thursday (May 29, 2003) at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Baptist Church, 1807 S. Kentucky Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Miles Grismore officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Gene was born March 23, 1923, in Meservey, Iowa, a son of David Edward and Doris Olive (Hanks) Enabnit. He attended school in both Meservey and Clear Lake.

Gene was united in marriage to June J. Martin on April 19, 1942, at St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City.

He was inducted into the United States Army and completed his education during ICC camp. Gene served in General Patton’s Third Army in both France and Germany during World War II, and was wounded in action. He operated as a military observer behind occupied enemy lines, using radio communication to report back to his unit.

After his honorable discharge, he returned to the North Iowa area to own and operate Gene Enabnit Trucking for nearly 30 years. During this time, he also worked at the sugar beet plant in Mason City for nearly 10 years. Gene also farmed near Hanlontown, Mason City and Nora Springs for 13 years.

The couple moved to Redding, Iowa, in 1974 and then Gene returned to Nora Springs to live with his son and daughter-in-law in 1999. He moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown in 2000 due to failing health.

Gene had a passion for music, learning to play the harmonica at age 4 and playing the organ and piano by ear for many years. He played in several bands across southern Iowa and enjoyed entertaining the residents of the Veterans Home with his music.

Gene loved animals, raising cattle and goats on his farms and training horses and dogs for many years. He was a very faithful and giving person who received a State of Iowa Volunteer Award from Gov. Terry Branstad in 1990.

Eugene is survived by three daughters, Karen Ruter of Mason City, Pam (Tom) Rose of Mason City and Connie (Dennis) Van Nice of Midland, Texas; two sons, Roger (JoAnn) Enabnit of Nora Springs and Marty (Sarah) Enabnit of Manly; 11 grandchildren, Terri Leikman, Kris Alsup, Gene Dahlen, Patty Dahlen, Scott Rose, Jeff Rose, Wendy Rose, Michelle Younger, Donovan VanNice, Daniel VanNice and Melanie Patton; 18 great-grandchildren, Trevor Leikman, Chelsie MacIlrath, Brandon MacIlrath, Rachel Alsup, Jacob Rose, Joshua Rose, Alyssa Rose, Laura Rose, Cody Rose, Jordan Rose, Gary Winters, Amber Winters, Alaina Younger, Maya Younger, Kelsee Norton, Abbie VanNice, Issac Srubar and Kaitlyn VanNice; one sister, Ruth Enabnit-Juhl of Mason City; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Rosemary; a brother, Everett Enabnit, and a sister, Rachel Enabnit-Davis.

DONALD ‘VERNE’ GREENAN

MASON CITY — Donald “Verne” Greenan, 72, of Mason City, died Thursday (May 29, 2003) at the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Ken Gehling officiating. Inurnment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

A time of reflection will be held from noon until service time on Monday.

Verne was born July 23, 1930, the son of Paul H. and Ragna A. (Wold) Greenan in Mason City. He attended and later graduated with the Mason City High School class of 1948.

On Jan. 11, 1951, Verne entered into active service for the United States Air Force. He served his county until his honorable discharge on Jan. 10, 1955. During his time of service, he earned the following commendations: Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National De-fense Service Medal, Good Con-duct Medal and the Korean Unit Citation.

Five days after being discharged from the service on Jan. 15, 1955, Verne was united in marriage to Joan K. Goertz in Duluth, Minn. To this union, five children were born.

Following his tour of duty, he came back to Mason City, where he found employment with the City of Mason City. Over the many years to follow, Verne worked for several branches of the city and finished his employment with the city while working in the Street Department.

Verne had been a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown since 1989.

Verne was known for his athletic abilities and enjoyed playing softball and going golfing and bowling. Verne en-joyed being outdoors, especially if he could be somewhere casting his fishing line. He wasn’t so worried about catching a bite but rather the time he could spend in the peace and tranquility. Verne was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1328, the V.F.W. and Holy Family Catholic Church.

Those thankful for having shared his life include his four daughters, Kathy Greenan of Mason City, Kim Bailey and her husband, Gary, of Des Moines, Leslie Wood and her husband, Keith, of Mason City, and Lori Greenan of Aurora, Colo.; one son, Dan Greenan and Connie Greenan of Mason City; one brother, Wes Greenan and his wife, Mary, of Mason City; seven grandchildren, and one niece and one nephew.

Mr. Greenan was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Joan, in 1995.

HELEN JANE AASGAARD

LAKE MILLS — Helen Jane Aasgaard, 80, died Friday (May 31, 2003) at Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kevin Mackey officiating. Inurnment will take place at Salem Lutheran Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church Tuesday, (641) 592-0221.

KEVIN J. KOENIGS

STACYVILLE — Kevin J. Koenigs, 23, of Stacyville, died Saturday (May 31, 2003) of injuries he received in an auto accident near Little Cedar.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Interment will be in Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Visitation Catholic Church, where there will be a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Scripture service at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the services at the church Tuesday.

Kevin was born Aug. 13, 1979, in Osage, the son of Kenneth and Veronica (Adams) Koenigs. He attended Visitation Catholic School in Stacyville and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1998.

Kevin worked as a D.J. with Heartland Express and was a bartender at the Hang Out in Riceville.

He enjoyed music, snowmobiling, four-wheeling, being with his friends and his dog, Sparky.

Kevin is survived by his parents, Kenneth and Veronica Koenigs of Stacyville; three brothers, Brian Koenigs of Stacyville, Craig Koenigs of Cresco and Scott Koenigs of Stacyville; paternal grandfather, Al Koenigs of Stacyville; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Clara and Ernest Adams, and paternal grandmother, Olive Koenigs.

ALDA KRAHN CLAUSEN

OSAGE — Alda Krahn Clausen, 89, passed away Friday (May 30, 2003) at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Christian F. Gugel officiating. Interment will be in Osage Cemetery in Osage.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, and will continue one hour before services at the church Monday.

Alda Helen Minnie Ahrens was born May 14, 1914, on the family farm west of Osage, the daughter of Richard and Alma (Frese) Ahrens. She was baptized June 7, 1914, and confirmed on Aug. 25, 1929, at St. Johns Lutheran south of Osage.

Alda married Elroy Krahn on Jan. 8, 1935. They had four children. Elroy passed away Oct. 10, 1956.

On Aug. 6, 1977, Alda married Claus Clausen from Mason City, and they lived there until his death Dec. 12, 1993. Later that year, she moved back to Osage. Alda loved to cook, take care of her family and spend time with her grandchildren.

Alda is survived by her four children — three sons, Richard Krahn and his wife, Rosella, of Osage, Gene Krahn and his wife, Katrena, of Osage, and Ronald Krahn and his wife, Suzanne, of Nora Springs; a daughter, Myrna Hoisington and her husband, Howard, of Orchard; 11 grand-children; one step-granddaughter; 14 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Earl Ahrens of Osage; four step-children, Delmar Clausen and his wife, Violet, Janice Atkinson, Donna Lawson and Margie Nashiem, and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands and one infant sister, Erna.

ROSALIE E. BONAVIA

WESLEY — Rosalie E. (Trunnelle) Bonavia, 75, of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Wesley, died Thursday (May 29, 2003) at her daughter’s home in Cedar Rapids.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wesley with the Rev. Daniel Greving officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Algona.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8:30 p.m. today at Wilson Funeral Home, 403 E. McGregor St., Algona, with a scripture reading at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church Monday.

Rosalie Ellen Bonavia, the daughter of Ted and Mildred (Carroll) Trunnelle, was born July 28, 1927, at LuVerne. She attended the rural schools of Kossuth County, St. Benedict School in LuVerne and graduated from LuVerne High School in 1944 as class president. She continued her education at the Electronic Radio and TV Institute in Omaha to become a telegrapher. Rosalie then worked for the Illinois Central Railroad.

On May 10, 1947, she was married to Charles Bonavia at St. Benedict Catholic Church.

In 1965, she graduated from Mankato State University, where she received her bachelor of science degree in education. She taught school for eight years.

Rosalie had a great interest in the legal system, so she completed a paralegal course in 1986. In 1987, she returned to Wesley, where she was ac-tive in the Titonka American Legion Auxiliary and the Titonka and Wesley Senior Citizens.

Rosalie had an outstanding memory. She took delight in discussions on every topic and always had an interesting point of view.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wesley.

Rosalie is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Bonavia of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Ted Trunnelle of Wesley; a sister, Mary Kahler and her husband, Art, of Burt; a sister-in-law, Ann Trunnelle of Redlands, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Roland Meyer of Algona, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Patricia Meyer; and a brother, Charles Trunnelle.

WATERLOO — Claude E. Black, 78, of Ravenwood Health Care Center, died Friday (May 30, 2003) at the center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Queen of Peace Parish St. John Worship Center. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cem-etery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel, 3146 Kimball Ave., Waterloo. There will be a Scripture service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the services at the parish Tuesday. Flag folding will be conducted by the Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 and the VFW 1623.

ORVILLE C. THOMPSON

BRITT — Orville C. Thompson, 92, of Britt passed away Friday (May 30, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Britt with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cem-etery in Britt.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. Monday at Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Orville, the son of Harry I. and Bertina Peterson Thompson, was born March 9, 1911, at Forest City. He graduated from Forest City High School and attended Waldorf College in Forest City.

On Feb. 22, 1936, Orville was united in marriage with Ruth Hutchens at Forest City. The couple farmed in the Forest City and Crystal Lake area until 1948.

They then moved to a farm west of Britt, where Orville was a DeKalb seed corn dealer for a number of years. Orville and Ruth continued farming until 1977, when they moved into Britt.

Orville was a member of the Britt United Methodist Church. He served as president of the Hancock County Saddle Club and was a member of a card club. He enjoyed traveling, wintering in Weslaco, Texas, hunting, and woodworking.

Orville is survived by one son, Tommy Thompson and his wife, Janet, of Rockwell; his daughter, Janice Hetland and her husband, Dean, of Ellsworth; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thora Clauson and her husband, Donald, of Forest City, and Elaine Vergeront of Riverside, Calif.; two brothers, Terry Thompson and his wife, Elnora, of Forest City, and Richard Thompson and his wife, Darlene, of Crystal Lake, long-time friend, Adala Bailey of Britt; and numerous cousins, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth, in 1991, and son, Eugene, in 2000.

MAURICE R. REYERSON

NORTHWOOD — Maurice R. Reyerson, 79, of Northwood, died Thursday (May 29, 2003) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Silver Lake Lutheran Church in rural Northwood with the Rev. Thomas Hagen officiating. Burial will be at Silver Lake Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Monday.

Maurice R. Reyerson was born May 13, 1924, the son of Roy and May (Brua) Reyerson near Albert Lea, Freeborn County, Minn. He lived in Heartland Township for 12 years, then moved to Silver Lake Township. He was baptized and confirmed in Silver Lake Lutheran Church. He attended Heartland and Silver Lake country school and Northwood Community High School.

On October 9, 1943, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Landaas at First Lutheran parsonage in Albert Lea, Minn. They lived on the Reyerson homestead, raising hogs and livestock, and farm-ed the land all their married life. The homestead is a Century Farm and Maurice was the 4th generation.

He was a member of the Albert Lea Moose Lodge and Eagles Lodge. He served on the Silver Lake Cemetery Board for 38 years. He and Dorothy were instrumental in organizing the Avenue of Flags at Silver Lake Cemetery, of which he was very proud.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, traveling and woodworking, and he also enjoyed being with his family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Dorothy Reyerson; their children, Marge (Dave) Tenold, Donna (Neil) Haugen, Joan (Tom) Vorland and Jean Hrubetz, all of Northwood; six grandchildren; one great-grandson, Xander Haugen; a sister Hazel Shaw; a 108-year-old aunt, Alma Anderson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Oscar and Vange Landaas, Alfred and Mary Landaas, and Lillian Hoyne; along with many nieces and nephews; and a special extended family, Kris and Steve Allison and their children, Brooke and Megan.

Blessed be his memory.

Maurice was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents; mother and father-in-law, Lars and Anna Landaas; uncle, George Reyerson; brothers-in-law, Leo Dralla and Leonard Shaw; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Martha and Lloyd Klukow, Selmer and Myrtle Peterson, Lloyd Landaas and Albert Hoyne.

MASON CITY — Clifford R. McCloud, 83, of 1608 S. Harding, died Sunday (June 1, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

JAMES R. ‘JIM’ FINDLAY

CANTON, Ohio — “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away.” James R. “Jim” Findlay, 64, of Canton, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on May 31, 2003.

Born on July 23, 1938, in Mason City, Iowa, Jim was a loving, devoted and compassionate husband, father and grandfather.

He fought a long, courageous battle for over two years. He was loved by everybody who knew him.

Jim was a graduate of Mason City High School in 1956 and graduated from Drake University in Des Moines in 1960.

He entered the Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School in June of 1960. He earned his Wings of Gold in November of 1961. He was one of the first ensigns assigned to fly the F-4 Phantom. He was also one of the first Top Gun pilots and flew in 206 combat missions. He was dedicated to Naval aviation. The two cruises in Vietnam he made were on the USS America and the USS Enterprise.

He was chosen as one of the “Outstanding Young Men of America” in 1970. Jim was a decorated Vietnam veteran. He was a true patriot who loved his country. He flew in the JFK funeral procession. He was featured on Channel Three’s “Project Patriotism.” He spoke for many organizations, sharing his abundance of knowledge and wisdom.

Jim retired from the United States Navy in August of 1980. Although he was retired, he was always devoted to his country and proud to have fought for it.

He was a member of the Business and Executive Club, Military Officers Association of America, and Disabled American Veterans. He was chosen as one of the 200 inductees for the Greatest Sons and Daughters for the Stark County Wall of Fame 2003 on behalf of the Ohio Bicentennial Celebration.

Jim’s accomplishments were a justifiable source of pride. he held high regard because of his positive attitude and zest for living.

Preceded in death by his father, Roy MacGregor Findlay in March of 1980, Jim is survived by his devoted, beautiful wife, Rita (Paris) Findlay of Canton. They have one daughter, Kristin (Findlay) Stanbro of Canton and one granddaughter, beautiful and delightful, Vanessa Kathleen Stanbro of Canton. He enjoyed his two granddogs, Baron and Natasha.

Jim is also survived by his mother, Minnie (Lenning) Findlay of Mason City; one brother, Gary and his wife, Susan, of Pensacola, Fla.; two nieces, Jennifer and Amy; and one nephew, Chris.

He will be missed beyond words. “May you enjoy fair winds and following seas.”

Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rossi Funeral Home, 730 30th St. N.W., Canton, Ohio, with Monsignor John Finnigan officiating. The burial will be at Northlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Navy and Marine Corps Relief.

ROCKFORD — Betty C. Fikse, 75, of 1852 Zinna Ave., died Thursday (May 29, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Remnant Seventh-day Adventist Church, Ind., 24 Third St. N.W., Nora Springs, with Elder Ellsworth Tevis officiating.

There will be no visitation. Her body will be cremated.

Memorials may be given to the Remnant Seventh-day Adventist Church, Ind., in memory of Betty C. Fikse for Bibles to Ghana, Africa.

Betty was born Oct. 4, 1927, in Albert Lea, Minn., the daughter of James and Viva (Legg) Alexandres.

She is survived by her four children, Debra Howard and husband, Alan, of Colfax; Yvonne Santee and husband, Gordon, of Rockford; Doug Erdman and wife, Julie, of Des Moines, and John Erdman and wife, Becky, of Mason City; grandchildren, Melinda Howard-Herrarte and husband, Jose, Amber Siefken, Chris Wood, Justin Erdman, Johnathan Erdman, Heather Erdman and Josh Erdman; great-grandchildren, Chelsea Siefken, Courtney Kulish, Jenna Siefken, Chandler Santee, Michael Lieb and Kristopher Erdman.

The couple moved to Redding, Iowa, in 1974 and then Gene returned to Nora Springs to live with his son and daughter-in-law in 1999. He moved to the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown in 2000 due to failing health.

Gene had a passion for music, learning to play the harmonica at age four and playing the organ and piano by ear for many years. He played in several bands across southern Iowa and enjoyed entertaining the residents of the Veteran’s Home with his music.

Gene loved animals, raising cattle and goats on his farms and training horses and dogs for many years. He was a very faithful and giving person, who received a Sate of Iowa Volunteer Award from Gov. Terry Branstad in 1990.

Eugene is survived by three daughters, Karen Ruter of Mason City, Pam (Tom) Rose of Mason City, and Connie (Dennis) Van Nice of Midland, Texas; two sons, Roger (JoAnn) Enabnit of Nora Springs, and Marty (Sarah) Enabnit of Manly; 13 grandchildren, Joshua Enabnit, Jenny Enabnit, Terri Leikam, Chris Alsup, Gene Dahlen, Patty Dahlen, Scott Rose, Jeff Rose, Wendy Rose, Michelle Younger, Donovan VanNice, Daniel VanNice and Melanie Patton, 18 great-grandchildren, Trevor Leikam, Chelsea Alsup, Brandon Alsup, Rachel Alsup, Jacob Rose, Joshua Rose, Alyssa Rose, Laura Rose, Cody Rose, Jordan Rose, Gary Winters, Amber Winters, Alaina Younger, Maya Younger, Kelsee Norton, Abbie VanNice, Issac Srubar, and Kaitlyn VanNice; one sister, Ruth Enabnit-Juhl of Mason City; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

DONALD ‘VERNE’ GREENAN

MASON CITY — Donald ‘Verne’ Greenan, 72, of Mason City, died Thursday (May 29, 2003) at the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Ken Gehling officiating. Inurnment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

A time of reflection will be held from noon until service time today.

Verne was born July 23, 1930, the son of Paul H. and Ragna A. (Wold) Greenan in Mason City. He attended and later graduated with the Mason City High School class of 1948.

On Jan. 11, 1951, Verne entered into active service for the United States Air Force. He served his county until his honorable discharge in on Jan. 10, 1955. During his time of service he earned the following commendations: Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Korean Unit Citation.

Five days after being discharge from the service on Jan. 15, 1955, Verne was united in marriage to Joan K. Goertz in Duluth, Minn. To this union five children were born.

Following his tour of duty, he came back to Mason City where he found employment with the City of Mason City. Over the many years to follow, Verne worked for several branches of the city and finished his employment with them while working in the Street Department.

Verne had been a resident of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown since 1989.

Verne was known for his athletic abilities and enjoyed playing softball and going golfing and bowling. Verne enjoyed being outdoors, especially if he could be somewhere casting his fishing line. He wasn’t so worried about catching a bite but rather the time he could spend in the peace and tranquility.

Verne was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge No.1328, the V.F.W., and Holy Family Catholic Church.

Those thankful for having shared his life include his four daughters, Kathy Greenan of Mason City, Kim Bailey and her husband, Gary, of Des Moines, Leslie Wood and her husband, Keith, of Mason City, and Lori Greenan of Aurora, Colo.; one son, Dan Greenan and Connie Greenan of Mason City; one brother Wes Greenan and his wife, Mary, of Mason City; seven grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.

LAKE MILLS — Helen Jane Aasgaard, 80, Lake Mills, passed away Friday (May 30, 2003) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Helen Jane Aasgaard was born Oct. 19, 1922, in Thompson, Iowa, to John and Gertrude (Nelson) Helgeson. She graduated from the Lake Mills High School in 1941. After graduating, she worked for attorney, Clifford Sheldon, who recommended her for a job at the State Capitol Building in Des Moines, Iowa.

Helen married John David Aasgaard on Dec. 24, 1943, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. They spent the first years of their marriage in Foxboro, Mass., where John attended the University of Boston and Helen was employed at a defense plant.

They returned to Lake Mills in 1946 and lived there all their lives. After her children were grown, she worked for her brother-in-law, Gordon Aasgaard at the Graphic Publishing Co.

Helen enjoyed entertaining, baking, gardening and traveling. She took great pride in her children and her granddaughters. She was blessed with many friends, some of them lifelong friendships. Her friends and her family enjoyed and will greatly miss her sense of humor.

Helen is survived by a son, Richard Aasgaard and wife, Karen, Lake Mills; a daughter, Wendy Johnson and husband, Gary Gaustad, Apple Valley, Minn.; three granddaughters, Beth Johnson, Roseville, Minn., Aimee Aasgaard, Lake Mills, and Cassie Aasgaard, Austin, Minn.; a brother Richard Helgeson and wife, Pat, Sun City West, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Harriet Helgeson, Albert Lea,Minn.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

ALGONA — Frank Nicholas Reding 92, formerly of St. Joseph, Iowa, died Saturday (May 31, 2003) at Good Samaritan Center in Algona.

Frank Nicholas Reding was born March 17, 1911, in St. Joseph, the son of Michael and Susan Altman Reding. He grew up in the area and attended school in St. Joe and later graduated from Livermore High School in 1929. After his schooling he began farming.

On Aug. 12, 1937, Frank was united in marriage to Elizabeth Noonan at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livermore, Iowa. After their marriage the couple continued to farm the family farm. Elizabeth died on July 25, 1965, and Frank continued to live on the farm until moving to Algona in 2000.

Frank enjoyed traveling, any kind of sports, golfing, playing cards and was known for being a good cattle feeder. He was a big booster of Bishop Garrigan High School, where he was a past school board member, as well as a booster of Iowa State University.

He was a member of St. Joseph Parish, where he was parish director from 1960-70 and became a member of St. Cecelia Parish upon moving to Algona.

Frank is survived by his children, Carole Ann and husband, Pat Nolan, of Marion, Iowa; Tom and wife, Phyllis Reding, of Algona; Jean and husband, Tom Sawyer, of Fort Dodge; Alice and husband, Albert Berte, of Livermore; Mary Sue and husband, Kent Schulze, of Minneapolis, Minn.; Bill Reding of Colfax, Iowa; Ron Reding and wife, Joan, of Mason City; Dan Reding of Colfax, Iowa, and Pat Reding and wife, Jeanne, of Algona; 26 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a special friend, Bertha Ewing of Rockwell City, Iowa.

Bernard Irvin Norem was born Nov. 6, 1931, in Wright County near Clarion, Iowa to Bert and Irene R. (Sanvig) Norem.

Bernie graduated from Alexander High School in 1949. In September of 1952 he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served until September of 1954. He then attended Waldorf College and graduated in 1957.

Bernie then joined his brother, Morris, in owning and operating the Norem Brothers Burial Vault Co. in Hanlontown.

He was united in marriage to Lois E. Tritch on Nov. 22, 1970, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City.

Bernie also worked as a custodian at the Central Elementary School in Clear Lake for 21 years, retiring in 1994.

All the children knew Bernie and he enjoyed them very much. He also enjoyed photography and his movie camera.

Bernie was a member of the Sons of Norway and was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. He enjoyed working on his family genealogy.

He was also a faithful member of the Clear Lake Evangelical Free Church and at the age of 34, Bernie trusted Christ as his Savior.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; three step-sons, Mark D. (Wanda) Tritch of Lincoln Neb., Michael D. (Lorrie) Tritch of Indianola, and Randy D. (Debra) Tritch of Saylorville; one step-daughter, Lisa (Don) Pannhoff of Marshfield, Wis.; seven step-grandchildren, Katie (Cory) Lyons, Justin Tritch, Austin Tritch, Machaela Tritch, Allan Tritch, Ryan (Deidra) Pannhoff, and Adam Pannhoff; three brothers, Morris (Joann) Norem of Clear Lake, Kenneth (Sandy) Norem of Greeley, Colo., and Dick (Patsy) Norem of Van Horne, Iowa.

RAYMOND — Robert W. “Bob” Nutt, 74, of Raymond, died Sunday (June 1, 2003) at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo of cancer.

He was born Jan. 19, 1929, in rural Dysart, son of Harley and Lydia (Reinke) Nutt.

He married Nancy Ann Jeffries on Oct. 23, 1964, in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Mr. Nutt attended Dysart schools and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. He then attended Greer College in Chicago, Ill.

He was a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of Guy W. Iversen Post 49 Cedar Falls AMVETS.

He was in the farm equipment business for 30 years and upon retirement had worked for the Minneapolis Auto Auction. For the past 17 years he had rental properties in Cedar Falls.

Surivors include his wife; three daughters, Connie and son-in-law, Donald Rinnels, and Pam Bergman, all of Cedar Falls, and Linda Orth of Cheyenne Wyo.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Elliott, of LaPorte City; and several nieces and nephews.

Clifford was born Oct. 21, 1919, in Madrid, the son of Frederick and Florence (McKenna) McCloud.

Clifford owned and operated M & M Motor Freight Company for many years, retiring in 1980.

He enjoyed collecting antique cars, entering many of them in parades, was a charter member of the North Iowa Vintage Auto Club, V.F.W., former member of the Moose Lodge and volunteered at Kinney Pioneer Museum.

Clifford is survived by daughters, Patricia Weaver of Mason City, and Shirley Otten of Mason City; son, Clifford McCloud Jr. and wife, Peggy, of Cape Coral, Fla.; grandchildren, Matt Otten, Jon Otten, Jim Weaver, Alec McCloud, Lori Slater, and Lisa Weaver, great-grandchildren, Staci Slater, Blake Slater II, Travis Rollefson, and Ethan Weaver; great-great-grandchild, RaeAna Slater.

Bernard farmed all his life on his family farm in rural Manly.

He was a quietly spiritual person who was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly.

Bernard is survived by one brother, Robert Smith and his wife, Norma, of Mason City, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mary Smith, Monica O’Keefe, and Veronica Thom; and two brothers, Gerald and John Smith.

RUTH ELIZABETH BERGSTROM DAHL

KANAWHA — Ruth Elizabeth Bergstrom Dahl, 81, of Kanawha, passed away Monday (June 2, 2003) at Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha.

Funeral services for Ruth Dahl will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Kanawha Lutheran Church with Dr. John Meyer and Janelle Siffring, AiM, officiating. Burial will take place in Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha.

Friends may greet the family from 5 until 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha and one hour prior to services at the church.

Ruth, the second daughter of Theodore and Martha (Holmgren) Bergstrom, was born Feb. 28, 1922, at Gowrie, Iowa. At an early age her folks moved to the Manson area where Ruth graduated from Manson High School. She then attended and graduated from LaJames Beauty Academy and became a professional hairdresser.

She was a talented musician both on the piano and pipe organ, and served as church organist.

Ruth was united in marriage with William “Bill” Dahl in July of 1942, at Augustana Lutheran Church of Manson.

In September of 1942, Ruth followed her husband to San Antonio, Texas where he went into the service and she became a cashier at Walgreen Drug Store.

Returning to Kanawha, the couple farmed for many years. Following their retirement, they moved into Kanawha where they lived until Nov. 27, 2001, when Ruth entered the care center following a long bout with Parkinson’s and diabetes.

Ruth was a member of the Kanawha Lutheran Church and was involved in making bandages for Lutheran World Relief.

Ruth is survived by her husband of 61 years, Bill; son Stephen Dahl and his wife, Dianne, of Camdenton, Mo.; granddaughter, Lt. Leslie Dahl of Vandalia, Mo.; grandson, Thomas J. Dahl and his special friend, Sheryl Soczek, of Lansing, Mich.; two sisters, Esther Miller and her husband, Harold, of Manson, and Charlotte Scharff and her husband, Dallas, of Nevada; sister-in-law, Mary Bergstrom of Decorah; and many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Martha Holmgren Bergstrom; two brothers, Raymond and Dale; sister, Alyce Quade; and great-niece Misty Untra.

ROBERT LEO ‘LEE’ JONES

MASON CITY — Robert Leo “Lee” Jones, 94, died Monday (June 2, 2003) at U.S.A. Health Care.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Swaledale United Methodist Church in Swaledale, with the Rev. Bruce Wittern officiating. Interment will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Swaledale.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City.

Robert was born May 29, 1909 in Hancock County, Iowa the son of Hugh and Mary Nell (Blakely) Jones.

He married Alfina Kramer on June 11, 1929 in Swaledale.

Robert and Alfina farmed in the Swaledale area until 1958.

He later worked for Henkel Construction and mowed the parks for the City of Mason City.

Robert was a member of the Swaledale United Methodist Church, and a former member of the Swaledale Area Men’s Club (SAM’s Club), and the Moose Lodge.

He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, gardening and raising roses.

Robert is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 74 years, Alfina Jones; his sons, Robert Lewis Jones, of Mason City, and Dale Lee Jones, of Northwood. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; his sister, Ellen Collins, of Mason City; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and three sisters.

DONALD A. ZELLER

WATSEKA, Ill. — Donald A. Zeller, 79, of Watseka, Ill., died at 8:10 p.m. on Tuesday (May 20, 2003) at Provena Convenant Medical Center in Urbana, Ill.

He was born April 20, 1924 in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Alfred and Lillie Bohnson Zeller.

Mr. Zeller served in the Navy Air Corps during World War II.

He married Dorothy Schmitt on March 23, 1944 in Mason City, Iowa.

He was a retired J.C. Penney manager after 42 years of service.

He was a member of St. Edmund’s Catholic Church, Watseka, Watseka Elks Lodge and Watseka American Legion.

He enjoyed playing cards and walking.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Zeller, of Watseka, Ill.; one daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Stan Elliott, of Watseka, Ill.; one son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Paula Zeller, of Hoffman Estates; one brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and DeEtta Zeller, of Mason City; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both parents; and one sister, Leotta Anderson.

Funeral services were held at the Segur-Knapp Funeral Home in Watseka. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Watseka, Ill. with full military honors.

JACKIE LEE REICH SR.

MASON CITY — Jackie Lee Reich Sr., 54, of 1635 N. President Ave., died Monday (June 2, 2003) at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Thomas Healey, Chaplain at the Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services Thursday.

Jackie was born Aug. 29, 1948, the son of Lavern and Bonnie Reich in Elma, Iowa.

When Jackie was 2 years old he moved with his family to Nora Springs where he started his education in kindergarten. The family later moved to Mason City where he finished his school years.

At one point in Jackie’s life he was employed by the Northwestern Railroad, he later went to work for Curries. Jackie retired from Curries at the time of his illness. He had been working there for 26 years.

Jackie loved to go camping, fishing, and spending time with his family. He cherished his time spent with his grandchildren.

Jackie was also a great rummage sale hunter.

Jackie was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge #1328.

Jackie’s survivor’s include his significant other of 21 years, Diane Cox; his mother, Bonnie Reich, of Mason City; five children, Jackie Lee Reich Jr. and his special friend, Linda, of Mason City, Paul Reich and his special friend, Sandy, of Fertile, Nick Reich and his special friend, Eva, of Fertile, Michelle Clayton and her husband, Mike, of Mason City, and Brian Reich and his wife, Hillary, of Mason City; Diane’s children, Shawn Cox and his wife, Calista, and Treena Cox and her special friend, Jake, all of Mason City; one sister, Nancy Lane and her husband, Steve, of Mason City; five brothers, Gary Reich, Tommy Reich and his wife, Betty, and Dennis Reich, all of Mason City, Steve Reich and his wife, Brenda, of Quasqueton, Iowa and Kevin Reich of Mason City; 19 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter, Erika; and many nieces and nephews.

RUTH LYNNEA (ANDERSON) PRICKETT

MASON CITY — Ruth Lynnea (Anderson) Prickett, 83, of Mason City, died Monday evening (June 2, 2003) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Steven Waughtal, chaplain at Good Shepherd Health Center, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Ruth Lynnea Prickett, daughter, of Herman William Anderson and Ida Marie Nelander, was born on June 22, 1919 in Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School in June of 1937.

She married Charley Bernard “Bernie” Prickett, on June 19, 1938 in Mason City.

On April 11, 1946 she and Bernie moved to 1520 S. Coolidge Ave. in Mason City where they made their home until Bernie’s death in 1990.

Ruth continued to live in Central Heights until her recent move to the IOOF Home and then Good Shepherd Health Center.

She was an avid bowler and was a junior bowling coach for many years.

She was a very good seamstress and was employed by various high quality men’s and women’s clothing stores in Mason City.

Her husband, her parents, one sister, one infant son, one grandson and one granddaughter preceded her in death.

She is survived by two brothers, Herman Anderson, of Clear Lake, and OC Anderson, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; three sons, Charles B. Jr. and his wife, Jean C., of Mason City; Dennis A. and his wife, Debra L., of Milwaukee, Wis., and William (Bill), of Mason City; and two daughters, Lindalee and her husband, William LeDuc, of Mason City and Ann L. and her husband, Donald Jensen, of Hudson, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY — Fred Eichmann Jr., 88, of Mason City, died Wednesday (June 4, 2003) at Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Fred will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2620 Hwy 122 E. in Mason City with Pastor Daird W. Korth officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cem-etery.

Memorials for Fred may be given to Messiah Lutheran Church.

Fred was born Feb. 15, 1915, the son of Fred Sr., and Marie Elizabeth (Buchamer) Eichmann in Winnipeg, Canada.

He attended McKinley Elementary School and the Lincoln Township School.

He was united in marriage to Yvonne B. Knuths on Sept. 13, 1950 at Bethlehem Luther-an Church in Mason City.

Fred was a charter member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Mason City.

He was also active in AARP, Sr. Chamber of Commerce., Senior Citizens Center and a former member of the Mason City Garden Club.

Fred was also an avid fisherman, hunter, gardener and ballroom dancer.

He was a loving and attentive husband and father of 53 years.

Fred is survived by his wife, Yvonne Eichmann, of Mason City; daughters, Carmen Eichmann and husband, Steven Herzog, of West Des Moines, Deanna Andrew and husband, Kevin, of Eagle Grove, Carol Sage and husband, Bryan, of Mason City and Nina Werstein and husband, Kevin, of Plymouth, Minn.; a son, Douglas Boyington and special friend, Julie, of Emerson; brother, John Eichmann and wife, Juanita, of Urbandale; sister, Marie Alden, of Boone; sister-in-law, Lillian Eichmann, of Harker Heights, Texas; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

BELMOND — Anthony Steffen Berns, known to his friends as “Ant”, 18, of Belmond, passed away on Tuesday (June 3, 2003) as a result of a car accident north of Rowan.

Funeral services for Anthony Berns will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the Belmond-Klemme High School Gymnasium, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick Lane S. in Belmond and will continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the school.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Anthony Berns Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Anthony, the son of Bob and Connie (Steffens) Berns, was born May 3, 1985, at Clarion. Iowa. He lived his entire life in Belmond and attended Belmond-Klemme High School where he had just graduated.

Anthony worked during the summer with his dad at the golf course.

Anthony was very active in sports and participated in basketball, baseball, golf and football all four years in high school. He was always a team player and never searched for the spotlight. He played for the love of the game. To Ant, “BBL was life.” After he grew out of being a player, he continued to coach.

He loved his friends and had a passion for life. Anthony was happiest when he was with Whitney and his friends and was rarely seen by himself.

Anthony has left to cherish his memory his parents, Bob and Connie Berns of Belmond; one brother, Terry and his wife, LeNay, of Florida, and their two children Brooke and Kylie; grandparents, Loretta Steffens of Fallon, Nev. and Bob and Fran Berns of Belle Plaine, Iowa; aunts and uncles, Phyllis Serpa and her husband, John, of Fallon, Nev., Brian Berns and his wife, Kim, of Jefferson, Iowa, and Lisa Vileta and her husband, Bob, of Marengo, Iowa; and soul mate, Whitney Allen, of Belmond, Iowa, and all his many friends who meant so much to him.

JENNIFER ANN FLING

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Jennifer Ann Fling, 39, of Minneapolis, died on Friday (May 30, 2003) at her home after a six month battle with cancer.

She is survived by her loving husband, Lee Sheehy; and other family members.

Although her departure is premature, she leaves us with a deeper appreciation of our blessings.

Jennifer earned degrees from the College of St. Benedict and the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.

Her career included teaching, law, public service and public broadcasting. She found a calling as a Certified Career/Life Coach who inspired clients, trained other coaches and took coaching into prisons to transform inmates and prison communities.

Services were held on June 2, 2003, in Bloomington, Minn.
