VIOLETTE GAST

OSAGE - Violette Lester Gast bid goodbye to this earth while catching the afternoon breezes on July 23, 2003.

She was born to Charles E. and Ida Belle (Pat) Lester on the family farm near Hampton on a crisp, clear November day. She was delivered by Dr. Joseph Sams, whose family would play a big part in the lives of Vi and her family all her years in Osage.

She attended school in Hansell. Growing up, her father instilled a love of horses in her and she became an amazing horsewoman. Riding was her passion.

She played basketball in high school and was a starter on the 1940 Hansell High School team that won the Iowa State Girls Basketball Championship that year. She also hit the books and was valedictorian of her senior class.

She attended Drake University for one year, then transferred to the University of Iowa, from which she graduated. While there, she was an active member of the Zeta Tau Alpha social sorority. By attending summer classes, she was able to graduate in three years with a degree in what was then called commercial education. That invol-ved teaching typing, shorthand and business skills.

Fresh out of college at 19, she took a job in Osage. A year later, a young, handsome teacher/coach named George Gast entered her life. He'd had quite an academic and athletic history himself while at Iowa State. They bickered, sparred and dated sporadically. Vi had broken one engagement and was currently en-gaged to someone else, but there was something about George. She signed a contract to teach in Sante Fe, N.M., the fall of 1945, just as World War II was ending. After she got there, she decided she really did love the guy.

So, after 50 letters, numerous long-distance calls and quite the adventure in Santa Fe, Vi ended her contract at the semester. She and George married on that most romantic of holidays, February 2, Groundhog Day!

As she'd been to very few big weddings during the more austere war years, she only had royal weddings from news-reels and magazines to emulate. So, in a white satin gown and with five bridesmaids in assorted pale sherbet colors, the Princess got her Prince.

After some great years getting to know each other, Charles Lester Gast was born in 1952 followed by George Gary Gast in 1957 and finally John Clifford Gast in December 1958.

Vi retired from teaching but worked in the bank in Osage for a number of years. George quit teaching and coaching and started Osage Feed and Seed. Vi handled the kids, house, gardens and all the bookkeeping for the business. Vi was a member of PEO and chaired numerous charities and committees for Osage and the United Meth-odist Church.

She even took up golf as she figured with George, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." She eventually got so good at it that she won the Sunny Brae Ladies Club Champion-ship in 1977.

George and Vi were quite social and very active in the Sunny Brae Country Club. He loved golf and to dance. She learned to follow his lead (to a point!). She loved to spend time and laugh with her gal pals, and her two bridge clubs went on for de-cades. Vi was renowned for her taste, style and beauty and a natural, approachable elegance that made everyone feel that they each, personally, were the center of her attention.

When George retired, they began a whole new phase, spending winters in St. Peters-burg, Fla. But they couldn't stay too long each winter as they would desperately miss their grandchildren, Luke and Amber Gast.

Vi took great care of George after he was nearly killed in a car accident in 1956 and spent months and months nurturing him back to health. He in turn was her rock when she developed Alzheimer's disease in her final years. They were two swans mated for life, and now, finally, together again.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with the Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and continue one hour before services at the church.

Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, (641) 732-3706.

DR. JOHN KELLEY MACGREGOR

MASON CITY - Dr. John Kelley MacGregor, age 84, long-time physician and gen-eral surgeon in north central Iowa, died peacefully at his home following a lengthy illness on July 25, 2003.

Dr. MacGregor was born in Mason City on April 7, 1919, the son of Helen Kelley and Jay B. MacGregor. He lived in Mason City until the age of seven, when the family moved to Decatur, Ill. He returned to Iowa, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Cornell College in 1941, where his father was the dean. In 1944, he earned his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York, N.Y. He completed an internship at the University Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, in 1945.

Dr. MacGregor served as a medical officer in the United States Army, helping with the reconstruction of Germany following World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of captain.

Upon discharge from the Army, he returned to the University of Iowa as a teaching fellow in the Department of Anatomy for one year. He then completed a three-year general surgery residency at the University of Wisconsin College of Medicine, Madison, Wis.

In 1951, Dr. MacGregor joined a group of three surgeons, Drs. Weston, Barg and Brush, forming the original Surgical Associates. This or-ganization eventually become the Mason City Clinic.

During the 1960s, he was appointed liaison physician to the Commission on Cancer. He was instrumental in the development of the Joint Oncology Committee between Mercy Hospital and North Iowa Medical Center, improving the care of cancer patients.

Dr. MacGregor was designated a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery by the University of Iowa in 1974 and helped coordinate the training of surgical residents who rotated from Iowa City with Surgical Associates.

In 1989, he retired from his active surgical practice at which time he accepted a part-time position with Mercy Hospital as administrative liaison physician for the re-cruitment and retention of area physicians. He held this position until retiring in 1994.

During his 38 years of medical practice in North Iowa, he touched the lives of many people. He was a skilled surgeon who will be remembered for bringing modern thoracic surgery to North Iowa and being instrumental in the formation of specialized medical care in the area, and perhaps best remembered for the compassionate, kind and thoughtful manner in which he practiced medicine.

Dr. MacGregor was involved in many community, state, national and international activities. He served on the boards of the United Way, the Charles H. MacNider Museum Foundation, the Iowa Hospice Organization, and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization Foundation.

In celebration of the practice of medicine in the Midwest, he founded the Boondocks Medical Society International. He served on the Cornell College Board of Trustees for 26 years, four of those as president of the board. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as Elder and Clerk of Session.

In 1966, Dr. MacGregor served with Project HOPE (Helath Opportunities for People Everywhere) in Nicar-agua. In 1971 and 1972, he and his wife, Ann, served on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Ganado, Ariz., with a Project HOPE program.

Dr. MacGregor enjoyed the gift of a wide range of interests and skills. He loved the outdoors and was devoted to reforestation and the planting of native prairie grass. Every summer he planted his garden with endless varieties of new vegetables, which he shared with friends. He was dedicated to sports and fitness, and enjoyed skiing, sailing and bicycling. While skiing cross country, nothing thrilled him more than the beauty of the fresh-fallen snow on Lime Creek, north of Mason City.

He shared his passion for sailing on Clear Lake with his children and grandchildren, savoring brisk sunset sails in the fall as the leaves began to change.

In his later years, he became an avid cyclist. He and Ann rode across Iowa many times on RAGBRAI, and when he was 76 years young, they completed a 5,000-mile bike ride across the United States in celebration of the Iowa Sesquicentennial.

In additon, he and Ann also enjoyed a number of bike trips in Europe with family and friends.

Ever a philosopher of life, Dr. MacGregor enjoyed reading, writing and reflecting on the world around him. He will be remembered for his kindness, humor, gracious spirit, beautiful smile and his bow ties.

His life and spirit are celebrated by his surviving family; his wife of 36 years, Ann; sister Mary MacGregor, Mount Vernon; son, John and his wife, Sue, of Cedar Rapids, son Paul and wife, Barbara, of Mason City, daughter Laurie MacGregor and husband, Guillermo Cuellar, of Caracas, Venezuela, daughter, Katie MacGregor of Whiting, Maine, son Andrew and wife, Sally, of Ashland, Wis., and former wife, Hester MacGregor, Mason City.

Elna was very active in Abigail Circle at United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She and Harvey belonged to couples Birthday Club for several years and a Birthday Club of very special ‘‘girls’’, her very closest friends.

Elna’s failing health led to many moves these past few weeks until she went ‘‘home’’ on Friday, July 25, 2003, to be with Harvey and Tom and her many friends and family who went before her.

She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by her daughter and husband, Judy and Royal Cerney, and her son and his wife, Michael and Mary Harms.

She was very proud of all her grandchildren who are left with many happy memories of time spent with her and Harvey. Left to cherish these memories are Mike and Christine (Cerney) Kortsheck, Jason Cerney, Matthew and Kristin Harms, Mason and Kelli Harms, Tim and Melissa (Harms) Eastvold and Melanie Harms and her special friend, Dr. John Parks. Her latest pride and joys were her great granddaughters, Julia Claire Eastvold, Laura Rae Harms and Alexzandra Mae Mehmen.

She is also survived by one brother, Merle Bilyeu; eight sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law, many relatives and friends.

Elna was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters, her son, Tom, in 1980; husband Harvey in 1993; and two infant granddaughters, Susanne Michelle Cerney and Angela Marie Harms.

She will always be remembered for her laughter and loving ways for her family and friends. May she rest in peace and tranquillity in the grace of the Lord with her friends and family who have gone ‘‘home’’ before her.

The family is inviting family and friends who wish to share any special memories of Elna to send them before Thursday to P.O. Box 61, Forest City, IA 50436. These memories will be placed in a Memory Book to be shared at the Celebration of Life at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Forest City. There will be no visitation.
