CLEAR LAKE — Pauline Ruth Brady, 62, of 715 Buddy Holly Place, Apt. No. 7, Clear Lake, died Sunday (July 20, 2003) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

MASON CITY — Dorothy E. Faught, 89, of Mason City, died Friday (July 18, 2003) at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, with Rev. Jim Stiles, First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue.

Memorials may be directed to the Dorothy Faught Memorial Fund.

Dorothy Elizabeth Zorn was born June 22, 1914, in Mason City, the daughter of Fredrick and Ida (Hartfelt) Zorn. She attended school in Mason City, and on November 11, 1931 she was united in marriage to Audrey O. Faught at First United Methodist Church, Mason City.

The couple farmed most of their lives in the Mason City area. Dorothy enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing, canning, and playing cards with her husband and other couples. She especially enjoyed cooking and preparing meals for her family.

Dorothy is survived and lovingly remembered by her children; Gary Faught and his wife, Deloris, of Mason City, David Faught and his wife, Marjorie, of Mason City, Roger Faught and his wife, Donna, of Manly, and Joyce Smith and her husband Gary of Burnsville, Minn. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Diane, Debra, Vicki, Randall, Cheryl, Robin, Douglas, Lisa, Shaun, and Wendi; 20 great-grandchildren; her sister Gladys Basgall of Manly and her brother, Irvin Zorn of Mason City; sister-in-law Edith Westcott of Medford, Ore., as well as several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Audrey; her parents; two sisters, Ethel Faught and Edna Koch; and two grandsons, David Jr. and Neil.

CLARION — Merritt McCoy, 83, of Clarion, Iowa, died Sunday (July 20, 2003) at the Wright Medical Center in Clarion.

NORA SPRINGS —M. Genevieve Witt, 77, passed away Saturday (July 19, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 5th St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Michael J. Podhajsky officiating.

Burial will be at Park Cemetery in Nora Springs. Lunch will follow at the Catholic Community Center, Nora Springs.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Scheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs. A scriptural vigil service will be at 7 p.m.

Genevieve requests memorials be given to either the Nora Springs Catholic Community Center or the St. Joseph Capital Improvement Fund.

Genevieve Witt was born January 20, 1926, in Rockwell, Iowa, to Bernard J. and Mary Catherine (McCarthy) Fitzgerald. She attended Sacred Heart Academy at Rockwell and graduated from there in 1943.

She married Harold Witt on November 30, 1946, at St. Joseph’s Rectory in Mason City.

She and her husband farmed in the Nora Springs area until retirement in 1985. Her hobbies were reading, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and cryptograms. She was an avid Chicago Cubs Fan.

Gen is survived by her son, Bill Witt and his wife, Nancy, of Nora Springs; daughter, Barbara O’Donnell, and her husband, Dennis, of Mason City; son, Jim Witt, and his wife, Pam, of Mason City, and daughter, Jolene Juhl, and her husband, David, of St. Ansgar. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Paul Witt and his wife, Heather, of Midland, Michigan, Christie Witt of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, Jarod Brallier and special friend, Liz French, and her son, Nick O’Dell, of Mason City, Nicole Seybert and her husband, Steve, of Nora Springs, Jeremy Witt and his wife, Mary, of Mason City, Randy Juhl and his wife, Kim, of Apple Valley Minnesota, and Michael Juhl and his fiancée, Jodi Thompson, of St. Ansgar; step- grandchildren, Tiffany O’Donnell and Nick O’Donnell both of Phoenix, Arizona; great-grandchildren, Colin Witt, Nathan Witt, Evan Seybert, Maysen Simmer, Paisley Witt, Caitlyn Juhl and Alex Juhl; two sisters, Alice Ebeling and her husband, Gary, of Humbolt, Iowa, and Mary Jane Moss and her husband, Ken, of Dyersville, Iowa; brother-in-law Dale Witt of Nora Springs; sister-in-law Bonnie Billings and her husband, Jim, of Nora Springs, and several nieces and nephews.

Gen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harold, on December 23, 2000; a brother, Bernard Fitzgerald and his wife, Doris; a sister, Marquerite Maxwell and her husband, Bill; her grandson, Jonathan Paul Juhl; her nephew, Bruce Billings; her son-in-law, James Brallier; and her sister-in-law, Edna Hallabrin and her husband, Phil.

ROBERT JOHN THORSON

LELAND — Robert John Thorson, 73, of Leland, Iowa, died Friday (July 18, 2003) at the Albert Lea Medical Center in Albert Lea, Minn. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at West Prairie Lutheran Church, Leland, with Rev. Jacqueline Swanson officiating. Burial will take place at West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery, Leland.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Mittelstadt Funeral Home and again one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Robert John Thorson was born in Forest City, son of Mina (Michaelson) and John E. Thorson on September 26, 1929.

He lived on the family farm all of his life except for two years of Army service with time spent in Korea. He was a member of West Prairie Lutheran Church.

He was united in marriage to Mavis Davidson on May 30, 1954, at Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa. They enjoyed forty nine years together.

Robert loved being on the tractor and farming, collecting toy tractors, woodworking, helping his kids with house projects and if his “girlfriend” Mavis or his children needed anything – they got it!

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Mavis, of Leland; daughter, Mary and son-in-law, Joe Consamus, and their children, Jamie and Maria all of Ames; son, John and daughter-in-law, Stacy, and their daughter, Anja and John’s children, Joshua, Jessica and Jennifer all of Rochester, Minn.; son, James and daughter-in-law, Anna, James’ children, Seth, Todd and Tyler, Anna’s children, Samantha and Bart Dugan of Thompson; son Michael and daughter-in-law, Teresa Tsang, of Rochester, Minn.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Sarah Jo.

DAVID KNOX

CLEAR LAKE — David Knox, 65, of Clear Lake, was born January 23, 1938, in Des Moines. He died Tuesday (July 15, 2003) of a respiratory ailment at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

David’s body was cremated and graveside services were held on Saturday at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Opportunity Village Pioneer Cottage, Clear Lake.

David is survived by his sisters, Shirley Pedersen of Council Bluffs and Ruth McCollum of Madison, Ala.; brothers, George Knox of Apopka, Fla., Alan Knox of Westhoff, Texas, and Gene Knox of Claremore, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Martin Knox, on June 14, 2003.

BELMOND — Adelaide H. Armstrong, 101, of Belmond, died Saturday (July 19, 2003) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

BERNEICE ANNETTA BAACK

THORNTON — Berneice Annetta Baack, 82, of rural Thornton, died Sunday (July 20, 2003) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thornton, with the Rev. Bob Hetrick officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton.

According to the wishes of the family, the casket will be closed.

The family of Berneice Annetta Baack has requested that memorial contributions be made to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City in her memory.

Berneice Annetta Baack was born on May 6, 1921, in rural Thornton, the daughter of Harold and Ellen Thada.

She attended and received her education in the Thornton School system, graduating from Thornton High School. Berneice was the first drum major in the Thornton school band.

After completing her schooling, she did light housekeeping for various families in the Thornton area.

She was united in marriage to Roy Baack on April 5, 1942, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. After their marriage, they farmed together in the Thornton area.

Berneice enjoyed flowers, fishing, gardening, dancing, camping, canning vegetables, and making jams and jellies, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, the church circle and was a member of the Lioness Club in Thornton.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Roy Baack, of Thornton; a son, Ben Baack and his wife, Vicki, of Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren, Jeremy Baack and Natasha Weaver and her husband, Nathan, all of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Merlin Thada and Dean Thada and his wife, Elvira, all of Clear Lake; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Lyle and Stanley Thada.

DES MOINES — Dorothy A. Brunsvold, 90, died Saturday (July 19, 2003) at Iowa Methodist Medical Center from complications due to pneumonia.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines; further services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E. in Mason City.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth, Iowa.

Mrs. Brunsvold was born in Mason City and lived there as well as a number of years in Colorado before moving to Des Moines in 1966.

She was a secretary for the Iowa State Education Association in the library service department.

She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church.

Dorothy is survived by one son, Paul Brunsvold, of Chicago, Ill.; a daughter, Anna Price, of Des Moines; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

MASON CITY — Arlene Olina Eichmeier, 74, of rural Mason City, died Saturday (July 19, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Daird Korth of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. today and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

Arlene Olina Eichmeier was born on Nov. 25, 1928, in Lake Mills, the daughter of Carl John and Agnes (Chose) Anderson. Arlene attended rural Brookfield Township School near Kensett, and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett.

After completing her schooling she worked on the Kinney farms rural Mason City.

She was united in marriage to George Eichmeier on June 24, 1947, in Mason City. After their marriage together they farmed in the rural Mason City area.

She enjoyed her cats, flowers, gardening, canning, baking and participating and making new acquaintances at farmers markets.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, George Eichmeier, of Mason City; two children, Gloria Weiden of Henderson, Nev., and Gary Eichmeier of Clear Lake; two sisters, Myrtle Coe of Portland, Iowa, and Ovila Sundvold of the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City; two brothers-in-law, Bob Eichmeier of Las Vegas, Nev. and Sam Spilman of Clear Lake; several nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Richard Anderson.

BETTY JEAN KATHRYN ONKEN

OSAGE — Betty Jean Kathryn Onken, 79, of Osage, died Sunday (July 20, 2003) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Care Center, Hospice Unit in Osage.

She was born Aug. 4, 1923, in Mason City, the daughter of Dana Moran Lezotte and Hazel Marie (Case) Lezotte. When she was a year old, her parents moved to New Hampton, where her father was depot agent for the Milwaukee Railroad. He passed away when she was 12.

Betty Jean completed 11th grade in New Hampton, and graduated from high school in Robinsdale, Minn., while living with her Uncle Roy Case and family. Her mother moved to Osage.

Betty Jean married Arthur Henry Onken on Feb. 21, 1948, in Dubuque, in a double wedding with Edward and Evelyn Squier. She worked 10 years for Burnham and Warren Insurance, and 25 years at the Osage Junior High School, retiring at age 62. Her husband retired from L.R. Falk Construction Company the following year. Betty Jean and Arthur enjoyed camping for many years while their health permitted. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1998 with Ed and Evelyn Squier.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, with the Rev. Gary Gilbert officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Monday, July 21, 2003, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Betty Jean is survived by her loving husband, Arthur Onken of Osage; a son, Eugene Onken and his special friend, Susan Bobus of Niles, Mich.; three grandchildren, Dawn Monica, Staci Meggs and her husband Billy, and Matthew Onken all of Niles, Mich.; six great-grandchildren, Paige, Chloe, Joseph, Jacob, Tyler and Zoey all of Niles, Mich.; three brothers-in-law, Frank (Ruth) Onken of Rudd, James (Jean) Onken of Osage, and Eno Onken of Arizona; two sisters-in-law, Donna Onken of Omaha, Neb., and Jennie Adams of Osage and their families.

STANLEY L. ZIRBEL

CLEAR LAKE — Stanley L. Zirbel, 85, of 23798 Finch Ave., Clear Lake, died Sunday (July 20, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Christian Church, 302 Highway 18 W. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Mark Young officiating. Private graveside services were held in the Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake, with military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

The family will greet friends following the memorial service at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Christian Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Stanley was born May 17, 1918, the son of George and Petrea (Back) Zirbel, in Grant Township, Cerro Gordo County, where he lived his entire life.

He graduated from Fertile High School in 1935. He was in the United States Army infantry from June 11, 1942-Oct. 11, 1945 as part of the 312th Medical Battalion, serving in the European Theater of Operations under Gen. George S. Patton’s 3rd Army. Following his military service he returned to the family farm, where he farmed for many years.

On July 13, 1943, he was united in marriage to Kathryn “Kit” Merwin in Clear Lake, celebrating their 60th anniversary a week ago.

He spent much time in public service. He was a member of the Fertile Co-op Dairy Association, Worth County DHIA, Fertile and Forest City School boards, Cerro Gordo 4-H Youth Council, and secretary-Manager of the North Iowa Fair from 1976 to 1984. He helped organize the Fertile Valley Farmers 4-H Club serving as one of its first leaders.

He loved spending time with young people. His hobby was gardening. After retiring, he worked part-time at Clear Lake Krieger’s Greenhouse, where he also enjoyed working with the owners and employees.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn, of Clear Lake; five daughters and their husbands: Jan and Fred Hare, of Fertile, Jim and Karen Weld, of Clarion, Amy and Keith Van Note, of Minneapolis, Minn., Jill and John David Murray, of Burnsville, Minn., and Eileen Zirbel, of Rochester, Minn.; a sister, Merridy Hill, of Mason City, Iowa; four grandsons; four granddaughters; five great-granddaughters; a great- great-granddaughter; and a wonderful extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Reva Nelson; a granddaughter, Merry Weld Dick; and an infant daughter.

MASON CITY — Raymond Walters, 73, of 416 First St. S.E., died Sunday (July 20, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

His funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Raymond was born Feb. 9, 1930, in Woodward, Iowa, the youngest of five children of Henry and Lena (Timmerman) Walters. He was raised on a farm near Osage and graduated from Osage High School.

Raymond moved to Mason City and married Nancy Ann Hinich on March 15, 1949. He farmed for several years and was also a partial owner of Peterson’s Body Shop in Osage.

By trade, Raymond was a proud ironworker. He was a hardworking, active, perfectionist who never complained.

Raymond was always willing to help others and was very family oriented. He was a teacher to all and a man of all trades.

Raymond had a very dry sense of humor, which you had to know to appreciate. He made many friends and acquaintances and was a master of conversation.

In his limited spare time, Raymond enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling, skiing, and enjoying time with his family.

Raymond will be greatly missed by his wife, Nancy, of Mason City; a brother, LeRoy Walters and his wife, Gene, of Osage; two sisters, Betty Irish of Keosauqua, Iowa and Irene Givens of Waverly; two brothers-in-law, Michael Hinich and his wife, Tina, of Clear Lake and Harvey Schauf of Mason City; and a sister-in-law, Zaneta Walters of Osage.

He is also survived by his nieces, Shirley Shirley of Charles City, Susan Walters of Wisconsin, Sandra Heter of Minnesota, Beverly Speer of Mount Sterling, Connie Ripple of Iowa, Judy Tuga of Readlyn, Debra Johnson of Mason City, Michelle Urrutia of Texas, Cynthia Pettit of Mason City, and Kathy Norman and her husband, John, of Illinois; his nephews, Richard Walters of Osage, David Walters of Osage, Robert Walters of South Dakota, Ronald Irish of Illinois, Michael Hinich Jr. and his wife, Andrea, of Illinois, and Patrick John Hinich and his wife, Hillary, of California; his great-nieces, Dawn Barragy and her husband, Doug, Sara Norman, and Michelle Hinich, his great-nephews, Eric Norman, Brian Hinich and Jonathan Hinich, his great-great-nieces, Kayla Nuehring, Krystl Barragy, and Sheena Clinton, and his great-great-nephews, Koby Barragy and Zach Pettit.

BELMOND — Mary H. Harty, 71, of Belmond, passed away Monday (July 21, 2003) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.

Funeral services for Mary Harty will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Janet Wearda officating. Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove.

Mary, the daughter of Tennes and Inga Larson Pederson, was born March 11, 1932, in Eagle Grove. She grew up in Eagle Grove and graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1949.

On Dec. 26, 1951, Mary was united in marriage with Gary Harty at the United Methodist Church Parsonage in Belmond. After living in different areas, the couple made their home at their current residence in Belmond in 1964.

Mary has been employed in various jobs in and around Belmond including the Belmond Hospital and Neo-Data. Following her retirement from Neo-Data in 1994, Mary was employed by North Iowa Woods and Belmond Labs.

She loved caring for her flowers and garden, quilting and sewing. Mary taught all her children to sew and she made the girls’ dresses for special occasions. She also enjoyed baking and made the wedding cakes for her children’s weddings. Friends were a very important part of Mary’s life; she enjoyed spending time with them and talking with them on the telephone.

Mary was a member of the Belmond United Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary, serving as president from 1976 until 1982, the American Legion Auxiliary, and member of the Birthday Club.

Mary is survived by her husband, Gary, of Belmond; three daughters, Judith Kaye Reeder of Eagle Grove, Teresa Lynn Platt and her husband, Kenneth, of Jones, Okla., and June Ellen Tulp and her husband, Harvey, of Goodell; one son, David Gene Harty, of Belmond; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two adopted granddaughters; and her mother-in-law, Geneva Harty of Belmond.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son in infancy; and her father-in-law, Maynard Harty.

Yvonne is survived by her husband, James Brechler, of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; daughter, Mary Paulson and her husband, Chris, of Iowa City; son, David Brechler of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; sister, Virginia Cullen of Emmetsburg; brother-in-law, Ronald Brechler and his wife, Carolyn of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

Pauline was born Sept. 8, 1940, the daughter of Tom and Arlene (Edwards) Thompson, in Mason City, Iowa. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1959.

Oct. 22, 1966, Pauline was united in marriage to Richard Brady in Glenville, Minn.

She had spent most of her working life employed as a bookkeeper, most recently for Opportunity Village in Clear Lake. Pauline enjoyed spending time with her family and visiting with friends, shopping and dining out.

Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her three children, James “Jim” Brady of Charles City; Carolyn Kielty and her husband, Robert, of Charles City; Patricia Winters and her husband, Robert, of Waverly, Minn.; six grandchildren, Chad Winters, Renae Gnade, Jason Winters, Brenda Goodknight, Tim Kennison and Rick Winters; five great-grandchildren; and will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by other relatives and friends.

Keith Warren Van Horn was born July 13, 1931, in Butler County, the son of Ben and Lola (Woodley) Van Horn. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1949 and attended Iowa State University.

Keith served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

On Dec. 30, 1963, he was united in marriage to Helen Scofield.

Keith was a design engineer for Oliver/White Farm for 25 years at the Charles City plant. He was then transferred to Coldwater, Ohio, where he continued his engineering career for White Farm under the ownership of Allied Products Corporation.

Later he was transferred to Independence, Mo., where he was employed as an engineer at AGCO, the successor owner of White Farm, retiring in June of 1994 and returning to Charles City.

He also owned Keith’s Trailer Sales for almost 20 years. Keith was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge.

His pastime activities included camping, playing cards, working with the computer, and having coffee with his friends at the Uptown.

He looked forward to spending time with his family and took special interest in his grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife, Helen, of Charles City; eight children, Jolene (Russ) Godbey of Charles City, John (Denise) Scofield of Denver, Colo., Gary (Zen) Van Horn of O’Fallen, Ill., Joy (Tom) Brown of Mason City, Marty (Kim) Van Horn of Fremont, Neb., Janan (Bob) Berstler of Solon, Jayne (Chuck) Hall of Nevada, and Lori (Paul) Wood of Clear Lake; 21 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Dean (Ruby) Van Horn of Minneapolis, Minn.; and sister, Carol Hartman of Vancouver, Wash.

He attended Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minn., and graduated with a degree in business administration in 1955.

He married Molly Kienitz on June 10, 1955. He entered the Army in 1955 and was stationed in Germany. After his discharge in 1957, he joined West Publishing in Minneapolis, Minn.

In 1959, he decided to follow his father into banking and joined the Farmers Trust & Savings Bank in Buffalo Center as a cashier. He continued at FT&SB for the rest of his working career, moving up through vice-president, president and chairman of the board.

He participated in numerous community organizations over the years including the Lions Club, Business Men’s/Community Betterment Club, Volunteer Ambulance Corps, MUSIK, Nursing Home Board and the United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife Molly; son Michael and Merry Gerzema of Urbandale; son David and Abbie of La Crosse, Wis.; three grandchildren, Tim, Camille and Audrey; and brothers, Larry of Valparaiso, Ind., and Kent of Shoreview, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Bernadine Leavitt.

Junior was born at Deer Creek Township, Worth County, Iowa, on June 20, 1930, the only child of Henry B. and Melvine (Tollefsrud) Logemann. He was baptized into the Lutheran Church on July 9, 1930, by the Rev. John Yevasakker and confirmed at First Lutheran Church by the Rev. O.H. Hovey in the spring of 1944. He received his elementary education in the Deer Creek Township Grade School and graduated from Northwood High School in 1948.

Junior served his country in the Army during the Korean conflict. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Northwood and farmed until his retirement.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 6779 in Northwood.

Survivors include many cousins and friends, especially Arlys Reeder and Bonnie Brevig, of Northwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

HAZEL BENSON

OSAGE — Hazel Benson, 76, of Osage, died Tuesday (July 22, 2003) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Hazel was born July 18, 1927, in David, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar and Belle (McKinney) Fleenor. Hazel attended rural schools and graduated from Osage High School in 1945.

She married Paul Dean Benson on Oct. 7, 1945, at the First Baptist Church in Osage. They farmed on the Benson family farm east of Orchard until 1982 when they moved to Osage.

Hazel lovingly cared for her family on the farm, and in 1977 she began employment at the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital in Osage until she retired in 1995.

She was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Osage, where she was a lifetime member, devoted volunteer, deaconess and circle member.

Hazel displayed her faith in God and love for her grandchildren throughout her home.

Hazel enjoyed giving friends and relatives rides to church, appointments and scenic drives. She had a huge garden on the farm and always had canned goods and eggs to share with family and friends.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Osage with the Rev. Roger Davies officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

VIOLET IRENE OKERSTROM

MASON CITY — Violet Irene Okerstrom, 93, of Mason City, died Tuesday (July 22, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City.

Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Samuel Hamilton Poore of the First Congregational Church officiating. Interment will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Friday.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Violet was born Sept. 18, 1909, in Story City, Iowa, a daughter of Earnest and Inez (Godfrey) Tandy. She grew up in Oskaloosa, graduating from Oskaloosa High School.

After graduating, she worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.

Violet was united in marriage to Byron Okerstrom on April 22, 1934, in Indianola, Iowa. They moved to Mason City in 1955, where Violet was a lifelong homemaker. She enjoyed playing bridge and golfing.

Violet is survived by her son, Robert Okerstrom, of Mason City; two grandsons, Bill Okerstrom and his wife, Kim, and Jim Okerstrom, all of Mason City; two great-grandsons, Cody and Jordan Okerstrom; one sister, Jean Barnhill and her husband, Robert, of Lanark Village, Fla.; three sisters-in-law, Lenora Tandy of Knoxville, Dorothy Tandy of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Maxine Bizot of Louisville, Ky., and a brother-in-law, Kryn Buyert of Oskaloosa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter-in-law, Ann Okerstrom, two brothers and four sisters.

ROBERT LEWIS STARKEY

CLEAR LAKE — Robert Lewis Starkey, 75, of Clear Lake, died Monday (July 21, 2003) after a valiant and courageous 2½ year battle with cancer. He showed love, dignity, faith and a sense of humor throughout his journey.

A funeral service to celebrate Bob’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess and the Rev. Edward Starkey officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake VFW. Interment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church and the American Cancer Society in his name.

Robert “Bob,” son of George and Agnes (Lewis) Starkey, was born Sept. 4, 1927, in Elmhurst, Ill. He spent his early years in Des Moines, moved to Clear Lake in 1941 and graduated with the class of 1944 from Clear Lake High School.

He entered the Navy and was stationed at Great Lakes, San Francisco and San Diego. At the time of peace declaration, Bob was aboard the USS Hornet as a yeoman petty officer. He was discharged in 1946.

Robert and Bonnie (Cook) were married June 14, 1952, in Forest City, and enjoyed 51 blessed years together. He was a devoted husband, cherished father and loving grandfather.

He was very proud of his family and treasured the times they spent together.

Bob attended Hamilton Business College and Drake University, and worked early in his career as an accountant at Valley National Bank of Des Moines and Water Tower Paint and Repair of Clear Lake.

He was the treasurer and chief financial officer of Winnebago Industries, Forest City, for many years and enjoyed his part in transforming a small trailer company into an internationally recognized leader of recreational vehicles.

For 18 years, Bob and Bonnie also embraced the challenge of owning a women’s retail clothing store, “Dawne’s” on Main Street of Clear Lake. They retired in 2000.

Zion Lutheran has been Bob’s church family for 62 years. He worked tirelessly on the building committee that helped make the vision of a new church a reality in 1965.

Bob had a quiet and steadfast faith that brought him much peace, especially in his final days. He was loved by many as he was a true friend and a man of great integrity and moral character.

He is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; son, Dr. Randall Starkey and his wife, Mary Jo, of San Francisco, Calif.; daughter, Dawne Starkey Sipe and her husband, Dr. James Sipe, of Golden Valley, Minn.; grandchildren, Joe and Jenna Starkey and Rachel and Christopher Sipe; a brother, Richard Starkey and his wife, Judy, of Ft. Francis, Canada; mother-in-law, Irene Cook, of Clear Lake, and several aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Agnes Starkey, and his grandparents.

ADELAIDE H. (HAUGE) ARMSTRONG

BELMOND — Adelaide H. (Hauge) Armstrong, 101, a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond, died Saturday (July 19, 2003) at the care center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. in Belmond, with the Rev. Rodd Hopp, of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. There will be no reviewal. Interment will be in the St. Olaf Cemetery west of Belmond.

The family suggests memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church or to the donor’s choice.

Adelaide Hauge was born Jan. 19, 1902, west of Belmond, near Kanawha. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Belmond.

Adelaide attended Belmond Area schools and later graduated from CCC College in Des Moines.

Following college she was employed in banking positions with banks in Kanawha and Belmond. She later moved to Minneapolis and became employed in a law office.

Adelaide was united in marriage to Frank Muyres and to this union, a son, Robert Lewis Muyres was born. Frank died suddenly of complications due to a heart attack.

After several years of widowhood, Adelaide married a lifelong friend, Ralph Armstrong. They were married for five years and traveled extensively. Ralph died of cancer in 1974.

In addition to her earlier years working in the banking industry, Adelaide was a lifelong homemaker. She had lived much of her life in the Minneapolis area.

She enjoyed playing bridge and occasions which included spending time with family and friends. Adelaide had lived for periods of time in Duluth, Minn., and Baltimore, Md.

A highlight of her later life was a wonderful friendship that she established with Minnesota 3rd District Congressman Jim Ramstad. A friendship which commenced on her 94th birthday and continued through correspondence and annual get togethers to celebrate her birthday.

Adelaide was known by friends and family for her knowledge of world affairs and politics. She was a staunch Republican and an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.

She loved Norwegian foods and thoroughly looked forward to visits from family and friends.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond.

Adelaide moved back to Belmond in 1999 and had been a resident of the care center since that time.

Living more than 101 years, Adelaide always said that she lived a wonderful long life filled with some sorrows and a whole lot of gladness.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her brother, Dale Hauge, of Belmond; daughter-in-law, Myrtle Muyres, of Minneapolis, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Ruth Hauge, of Goodell, and Kathryn Koch, of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Fred Muyres, of Fargo, N.D., and Irene Kronschnabel, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by parents; husbands, Ralph and Frank; son, Robert Muyres; grandson, Steven Muyres; brothers, Wilmer, Alvin, and Galen; sisters Alma Claret, Gladys Tyrrell, and Luella Dixon; and sister-in-law, Velma Hauge.

HAZEL BENSON

OSAGE — Hazel Benson, 76, of Osage, died Tuesday (July 22, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Hazel was born July 18, 1927, in David, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar and Belle (McKinney) Fleenor. Hazel attended rural schools and graduated from Osage High School in 1945.

She married Paul Dean Benson on Oct. 7, 1945, at the First Baptist Church in Osage. They farmed on the Benson family farm east of Orchard until 1982 when they moved to Osage.

Hazel lovingly cared for her family on the farm, and in 1977 she began employment at the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital in Osage until she retired in 1995.

She was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Osage where she was a lifetime member, devoted volunteer, deaconess, and circle member.

Hazel displayed her faith in God and love for her grandchildren throughout her home.

Hazel enjoyed giving friends and relatives rides to church, appointments, and scenic drives. She had a huge garden on the farm and always had canned goods and eggs to share with family and friends.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Osage, with the Rev. Roger Davies officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation was held Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and further visitation will be one hour before services today at the church.

She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Terry) Christiansen of Nora Springs and Connie Benson of New Bern, N.C.; three sons, Garry (Marge) Benson of New Hampton, Dennis (Joni) Benson of Farmington, and Bruce (Angie) Benson of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Candace and Heather Benson; Tara (Shannon) Zierke, Travis (Donna) and Trent (Renee) Chistiansen; Brian Benson; MacKenzie and Austin Benson; two stepgrandchildren, Tracy and Roy Penning; four great-grandchildren, Tarna, Ally, Jordan and Stefan; and two 2 step-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Belle Horgen, Ruth (Joe) Schultz, and Zola Naig of Osage, and Betty (Roger) Moore of Elgin, Ill.

BELMOND — Sharon K. Kennedy, 64, of Belmond, passed away Wednesday (July 23, 2003) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.

Sharon Kay, the daughter of Millard (Pete) and Edith (Nelson) Evans was born in Algona on Aug. 16, 1938. She was baptized and confirmed at the Kanawha Lutheran Church.

She attended Kanawha Schools where she sang in the choir, played basketball and was the first Kanawha Labor Day Queen.

Sharon married John (Jack) William Sr. The couple lived for a time in Texas and were blessed with five children.

On May 8, 1972, Sharon was united in marriage with David Kennedy. The couple made their home in Belmond.

Sharon sold Electrolux Vacuum cleaners for many years, but devoted most of her time to raising her family. In her spare time Sharon enjoyed going to garage sales.

She was an active member in the Belmond United Methodist Church where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school.

Sharon loved the children and they were very important to her.

She helped start the Belmond chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous and celebrated 23 years of sobriety. She was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

Sharon is survived by her husband, David, of Belmond; five children: Jack Williams Jr. and his wife, Robin, of Belmond, Kristie Buseman of Belmond, Randy Williams and his wife, Diane, of Mason City, Rachelle Buseman and her husband, Terry, of Belmond, and James Williams and his wife, Angie, of Rowan; five stepchildren: Sandy Licon and her husband, Ramon, of Roswell, N.M., Linda Loux and her husband, Lynn, of Belmond, Jim Kennedy and his wife, Jane, of Kansas City, Mo., April Kemmer and her husband, Randy, of Northbrook, Ill., and Terri Corsello and her husband, Jim, of Mason City; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her mother, Edith Evans, of Belmond; three sisters, Delores Birdsall and her husband, Roger, of Sheffield, Donna Legg and her husband, Dean, of Houma, La., and Deanna MacNamara and her husband, Bob, of Meservey; one brother, Jim Evans and his wife, RaeAnn, of Lansing, Kan.; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, aunts, uncles, friends, and the many children whose lives she touched.

Lorrayne E. Oswald was born June 27, 1919, in Dubuque, to Clarence and Grace (Trude) Dirksen.

Lorrayne had resided in Dubuque most of her life and was a graduate of the former St. Joseph’s Academy. She was an admittance clerk at Mercy Hospital during the 1950s and then became a secretary at Mutual of Omaha until 1967. For 22 years Lorrayne worked in the development office at the University of Dubuque, retiring in 1989.

She was a member of the Nativity Parish and it’s Rosary Society.

She is survived by her children, Cyril W. (Lynda) Oswald, of Hudson, Fla., Keith (Cary) Oswald, of Rickardsville, Iowa, Shari Bartels, of Dubuque, and Sue and Tim Fleming, of Mason City, Iowa; six grandchildren, Tony and Brian Oswald, Kris (Jason) Clausen, Amy (Troy) Elwood, and Eric and Kimberly Fleming; three great-grandchildren, Kyle, Justin, and Rebecca; her sister, Jeanne Kieffer, of Dubuque; her sister-in-law, Ruth Dirksen, of Dubuque.
