RONALD E. BREDLOW

GARNER — Ronald E. Bredlow, 76, of Garner, died Sunday (June 29, 2003) at his home in Garner.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. David H. Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. 4th St. in Garner. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Ronald Eugene Bredlow, the son of Franklin Arthur and Julia C. (Borchers) Bredlow was born June 24, 1927, on a farm near Garner in Liberty Township. He attended Liberty Township School No. 2 and then Garner High School, graduating in 1944.

Ron farmed with his parents for several years.

On March 5, 1950, Ron was united in marriage to Marilyn Railsback at the United Methodist Church in Garner. They bought and farmed the family farm until 1967.

They moved into Garner where he worked for Yohn Ready Mix for several years. Ron also worked at Farmer’s Cooperative Society and later for Land O’Lakes. He served as Hancock County magistrate for five years, retiring in 1992.

Ron was a life-long sports enthusiast with a strong interest in local, area and national sporting events.

He especially enjoyed the achievements of his family. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling, bird watching and gardening.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Men, served as an usher and was active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

He was on the membership committee of the Farm Bureau and had served as a 4-H leader.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marilyn; four children, Jane Wellik and her husband, Maynard, of Humboldt and their two children, Michelle Henry and her husband, Jay, and their children, Kayla and William and Jon Wellik and his wife, Mindy, and their son, Zane; Gerry Bredlow and his wife, Jodie, of Spencer and their three children, Dustin and his friend, Karla Schuldt, Kelly and Ashley; Chuck Bredlow and his wife, Tami, of Altoona, and their two children, Katie and Courtney; and Jill Cook and her husband, Steve, of Algona, and their three children, Megan, Molly and Emily; three sisters, Lorain Bredlow of Clear Lake, Marjorie Millard and her husband, Bill, of Perry, Mo., and Sheryl Peterson of Clear Lake; two sisters-in law, Viola Bredlow and Mildred Bredlow, both of Garner; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Elizabeth Marie Bredlow; his parents; three brothers, Glen Bredlow, Marvin Bredlow and LeRoy Bredlow; and a brother-in-law, Larry Peterson and a sister-in-law, Hazel Bredlow.

WALLACE A.D. BRUDVIG

HASTINGS, Minn. — Wallace A.D. “Wally” Brudvig, 75, of Hastings, formerly of St. Paul, died Sunday (June 29, 2003) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Philip’s Lutheran Church, 1401 15th St. in Hastings.

Interment will be in Scarville, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, 201 E. 7th St. in Hastings, Minn., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be given to Health East Hospice, Luther College or St. Phillip’s Church.

RANDY R. FICK

MASON CITY — Randy R. Fick, 55, of 620 North Jackson died Sunday (June 29, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Graveside inurnment services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Travis Fisher, Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Mason City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Randy R. Fick Memorial Fund.

Randy was born Sept. 1, 1947, in Mason City, the son of Clyde and Peggy (Severs) Fick. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1965 and from Mankato State, Mankato, Minn. in 1969 with a B.S. degree.

Randy owned and operated North Federal Antique Mall and enjoyed attending auctions and garage sales.

He is survived by his mother, Peggy Fick of Mason City; daughter, Kristy Fick of Lakeville, Minn.; son, Mike Fick of Northwood; four grandchildren, Ethan Meiburg, Dalton Brass, Thomas Fick and Joshua Fick; former wife, Karen Fick of Clear Lake; former mother-in-law, Anne Durben of Stacyville; cousin, Terry Turnure and wife, Linda, of Mason City and their children, Tiffany Coleman, Devon Thomas and Meggan Turnure; great-aunt and uncle, Hannah and Jet Lamb of Des Moines, great-aunt, Catherine Schreckengost of Mason City; and her daughter, Sally Bonjour

VENICE, Fla. — Sharan Ann Frandle-Boone, 64, of Venice, Fla. died Saturday (June 28, 2003) at The Cedars in McPherson, Kan.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the West Prairie Lutheran Church in Leland, Iowa, with the Rev. Murley Severtson officating. Inurnment will be in West Prairie Lutheran Church Cemetery in Leland.

DOROTHY MAE KEPHART

MACOMB, Ill. — Dorothy Mae Kephart, 78, of Macomb, Ill., died Saturday (June 28, 2003) at the Macomb Senior Living Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Paul’s Church in Macomb, Ill., with Father Richarrd Pricco officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Dodsworth-Piper-Wallen Funeral Home in Macomb.

Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Church Building Fund.

Dorothy Mae Kephart was born July 24, 1924, in Mason City, Iowa, a daughter of Albert and Mary (Kaefer) Wallace.

She first married Virgil Dalton Miller. He died in 1965. She then married Glen Kephart and he died in 1991.

She worked in retail sales at Target and Wal-Mart stores in Mason City, and at Hy-Vee in Macomb, Ill.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Church, St. Paul’s Womens Guild; and the Macomb Singing Seniors.

She is survived by a son, David LeRoy Miller of Macomb, Ill.; daughter, Laurel Elaine Johnson, of West Riding, Va.; six grandchildren, Benjamin, Catherine and Christina Miller, Patrick, James and Johanna Cooley; four great-grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Johnson, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; brother, Patrick Wallace, of Mason City, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, two sons; and one granddaughter in infancy.

TAUS HARMS, SR.

BELMOND — Taus Harms Sr., 90, son of Stenus and Grace (Folkerds) Harms was born on August 3, 1912, in rural Franklin County, Iowa. He passed away June 29, 2003 due to complications resulting from a stroke that he had suffered on Father’s Day.

Funeral services for Taus Harms Sr., will be held Wednesday, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick Lane South, Belmond, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Lowell Halvorson officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation for Taus Harms Sr. will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the funeral home.

Taus married Cecelia Heginger on February 3, 1934. To this union were born twelve children. The ten surviving children are Bennie Harms and his wife, Jean, of Mason City, Taus Harms Jr. of Belmond, Larry Harms and his wife, Maxine, of Sanborn, Harry Harms and his wife, Barbara, of Hampton, Darlene Ewers and her husband, Dexter, of Mason City, Arlene Weimann of Nora Springs, Donald Harms and his wife, Georgia, of Hampton, Ronald Harms and his wife, Nancy, of Belmond, Jerry Harms and his wife, Marlene, of Rockledge, Fla, Gary Harms Sr., and his wife Barbara, of Rockledge, Fla., one brother, Herman Harms of Forest City, and many nieces and nephews. He was blessed with 22 grandchildren, 34 great-grand children and one great-grandchild.

Taus farmed in the Thornton, Klemme, Chapin, Belmond and surrounding areas all his life until he moved to the Belmond Community Apartments in 1997 and later in 1997 to the Belmond Health Care Center.

Taus enjoyed playing cards and dice and visiting with family and friends.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Cecelia, of 48 years, who passed away on January 25, 1982, two infant babies, one grandson, one great grandson, 14 brothers and a sister.

SELMA A. PERKINS

ST. ANSGAR — Selma A. Perkins, 95, of St. Ansgar died on Saturday (June 28, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, Iowa, with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Burial will be in the Deer Creek Cemetery, Carpenter.

Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.

Selma was born April 4, 1908, in Deer Creek Township, Worth County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Maria (Gordon) Johnson. She was bapitzed and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, where she was a life-long member. Selma attended rural school in Worth County and graduated from Otranto High School, Otranto, Iowa in 1926. On August 13, 1927, she married Randall Perkins of Lyle, Minnesota. They made their home in the Lyle area for 58 years. Following Randall’s death in December of 1985, Selma moved to Worth Living Center in St. Ansgar. After failing health and vision she became a resident at the Good Samaritan Center.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Randall; an infant son, Allan Eugene Perkins; brother, Lloyd Johnson and his wife, Minnie; brother Arthur Johnson, all of Northwood; sister-in-law Viola (Maynard) Johnson; an infant sister, Alice Johnson; son-in-law Keith Funk of Osage.

Selma is survived by a daughter, Helen Marie Funk of Osage; a son, John (Ludmilla) Perkins of Cresco; six grand daughters; 11 great- grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; four step grandchildren; 12 step great- grandchildren; a brother, Maynard Johnson of Northwood; sister-in-law Mary (Arthur) Johnson of Northwood; many nieces and nephews.

ADA KAYE THOMPSON

CLEAR LAKE — Ada Kaye Thompson, 90, 3714 North Shore Dr., Clear Lake, died Saturday, December 28, 2002, at the North Iowa Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on July 3, 2003, at the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating. Inurnment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the First Congregational Church in her name. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, Iowa in charge of arrangements.

Ada Kaye was born April 18, 1912, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Walter and Maude (Palmeter) Choate. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1929 and attended Mason City Jr. College for two years.

Ada Kaye married James Harold Thompson Oct. 5, 1935. She was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church where she served in many capacities such as Sunday school teacher, pianist, and originator of the Angel Workshop. Ada Kaye was also a charter member of the Congregational Church of the Valley in Chandler, Ariz. She was a member of Chapter EA, P.E.O., Today’s Club, and Crescent Club, and along with her family, was active in the Yacht Club. Special interests were genealogy and Clear Lake history, about which she was particularly knowledgeable.

Ada Kaye is survived by her daughter, Sally Burk and husband, Gale, Gilbert, Ariz., her son, Doug Thompson and wife, Mary, Clearbrook, Minn.; four grandchildren, Stephanie Davis, and husband, Brian, Kristin Brown and husband, Todd, Anna Thompson and Emily Thompson; great-grandchildren Ashlyn Davis, Chandler, Ariz., and Madison Kay Brown, Denver, Colo., nieces, Joanne Watkins, Clear Lake, Margaret Ann Carter, Letts, Iowa, Mary Lou Thompson, Marshalltown; nephews, Dr. Peter Watkins, Elkader, Iowa, Dr. Tom Choate, Madison, Wisc., and James Thompson, Letts, Iowa; cousins, Dr. Harold Vedeler, Alexandria, Va. and Betty Dean, White Fish Bay, Wisc.

ALGONA — Margaret K. Rezabek, 76, of Algona, died Sunday (June 29, 2003) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

MICHAEL DEAN ROSSUM

MASON CITY — Michael Dean Rossum, 55, of Modesto, Calif. formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (May 25, 2003) at his home in Modesto.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating.

His body was cremated and inurnment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Michael Dean Rossum Memorial Fund.

Michael was born May 13, 1948, in Mason City, the son of Gordon Dean and Anna Arlene (Kendall) Rossum. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1968.

He was employed by Snell’s Ambulance Service in Mason City, before moving to Modesto, in December of 1975.

He was employed by several different businesses while in Modesto.

Michael is survived by his mother, Anna Arlene Rossum, of Mason City; brothers, Roger and wife, Deborah, of Mason City, Russell of Waverly, and Dennis of Mason City; sister, Mary Ann of Mason City; uncle, Eugene Kendall and wife, Lila, of Mason City; two nephews, one niece, one great-nephew; and a special friend, Ruthie McNatt, of Modesto, Calif.

Michael was preceded in death by his father; maternal and paternal grandparents; and long-time special friend, Richard Barton, of Modesto, formerly of Mason City.

CHARLOTTE RAE TILTON

MASON CITY — Charlotte Rae Tilton, 75, of 123 Fifth St. N.W., died Saturday (June 28, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating.

The family will greet friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, in the Fireside Room of the First United Methodist Church.

According to her wishes, Mrs. Tilton’s body has been cremated.

Memorials may be directed to the Charlotte Rae Tilton Memorial Fund in care of 123 5th St. N.W. in Mason City.

Charlotte Rae Tilton was born Jan. 18, 1928, in Spirit Lake, to Glen Ward Jones and Flora Jane Kindlespire. The eldest of five, Charlotte attended a one-room school prior to graduating from Rock Valley High School in 1947.

After working at the gas company in Estherville, Iowa, Charlotte moved to Mason City, where she met her future husband, Warren Tilton, on a blind date.

The couple were married on Feb. 11, 1951, in Spirit Lake in a ceremony officiated by the bride’s uncle, the Rev. Maurice Lester Jones.

Charlotte was employed for more than 30 years by Mason City’s Elks Lodge No. 375, planning and coordinating a the club’s special occasions and, later, managing the facility with characteristic dedication until her retirement.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, and a son, Glenn Edward Tilton, who passed away on Jan. 23, 2003.

Mourning her passing are her husband of 52 years, Warren Tilton; daughters, Mona Grupp of Severna Park, Md., and Robin Tilton of Mason City; and five grandchildren, Mona’s children (Nathaniel, Charlotte, and Victoria), Glenn’s daughter (Tammi Barnes of Minneapolis), and Robin’s daughter (Jasmine Lane). Charlotte is also survived by her brothers, Marvin Jones of Tempe, Ariz., Roger Jones of Okoboji, Iowa, Shelby Jones of Des Moines, and Victor Jones of Tempe.

Charlotte was a devoted wife, a loyal sister, and a loving, supportive companion to her children and grandchildren. Admired for her youthful spirit and selflessness, she offered to all a sympathetic heart.

Among both friends and family she could be counted upon to remain upbeat and compassionate, with nothing but praise and affection for her many friends.

She will be forever remembered for her warm, winning smile and her cheerful laugh, characteristics which won the hearts of all who knew her.

Charlotte, we love you and will cherish the remembrance of you forever.

IVA J. ‘IVY’ STEPHAN

DULUTH, Minn. — C.R.N.A. Iva J. Stephan, 68, of Duluth, Minn. died Sunday (June 29, 2003) in St. Luke’s Hospital Hospice.

She was born on Feb. 27, 1935 to Herman and Margaret (Bernarde) Damrau in Tigerton, Wis. Iva graduated from Tigerton High School in 1953. She went on to graduate from Methodist Kahler School of Nursing in1956 and the Mayo Clinic School of Anesthesia in 1958.

Iva worked as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist for 32 years at a variety of different hospitals; starting at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., then to St Olaf Hospital in Austin, Minn., Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa, Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea, Minn., and ending her career at St. Luke’s Hospital here in Duluth in 1991.

Her love for life and outgoing nature enabled her to touch the hearts of many.

Her many hobbies included quilting, gardening, cooking, and traveling. She was an avid reader and had a bold nature that resembled those of the heroines in her novels.

Iva was proud of her profession as a C.R.N.A and held positions as the president of the Iowa Association of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, and vice president of the National Association of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.

Iva was a remarkable woman and will be missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Craig, and brothers, Gerald, David, and Arden Damrau. Iva is survived by her husband, Philip of Duluth, sons, Philip Jr. of Mendota Heights, Minn., Mark (Tierza) of Edina, Minn., and Bruce (Pam) of Waconia, Minn., and grandchildren, Tai, Cole, Chad, Jack, and Rachel.

A gathering time will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service on Saturday, July 12, 2003 at the Jarvi-Dowd Chapel in Duluth, Minn.

CURTIS JUSTIN PETERSON

ALGONA — Funeral services for Curtis Justin Peterson, 80, of Algona, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church in Algona, with the Rev. Dr. Mark E. Holmer officiating. Interment will be at East Lawn Cemetery in Algona, with a flag presentation by the VFW Post No. 2541.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona and one hour prior to services at the church.

Curtis Justin Peterson was born Aug. 31, 1922, in Kiester, Minn. to Carl and Lydia (Hedberg) Peterson. Curt graduated from High School in Kiester then farmed with his father.

On March 10, 1945, Curt was married to Geraldine Frandle in Albert Lea, Minn. Curt served his country during World War II in the Navy serving on the Battleship Washington. While in the Navy, Curt was a member of the Blue Jacket Choir.

Following his discharge, he returned to Rake, Iowa, where he worked as a mechanic with his father-in-law. He later owned and operated a truck line and later a heavy equipment business at Rake.

Curt retired and helped Roger Schaefer, near Rake, farm part-time. In 1991, Geraldine retired and the couple moved to Algona.

During retirement, Curt worked part time for Steve’s Dry Cleaning and enjoyed the game of golf. He also enjoyed working in his vegetable garden.

Curt was a member of the V.F.W., First Lutheran Church in Algona as well as the 60 Plus Luncheon Group at church.

Curt died suddenly on Saturday (June 28, 2003) in Rochester, Minn. following surgery.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine, of Algona; children, Dan Peterson and wife, Sandy, of Algona; Patricia Andersen and husband, George, of Lakeville, Minn. and Steve Peterson and wife, Shelby, of Farmington, Minn. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sisters LaVonne Baer and husband, Bob,of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. and Marjorie Drugg of LeRoy, Minn.

Curt was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Doris Anderson, and two brothers, Russell and Vincent Peterson.

NORTHWOOD — Joyce Rosalyn Kuhlmann, 72, of Northwood, died Sunday, (June 29, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Joyce Roselyn Kuhlmann was born on December 6, 1930, in Los Angles, California, the daughter of Edward C. and Thekla (See) Volger. She attended and graduated from John Marshall High School in Hollywood, California. After completing her schooling she worked for E. Brooks Randall, insurance company on Sunset Boulevard, California. She was united in marriage to Gaylord “LaVon” Kuhlmann on September 21, 1957, in the Hollywood Lutheran Church in Hollywood, California. In 1959, they moved to Northwood where she loved and raised her family. Joyce worked for a period of time as a secretary in Mason City.

She enjoyed bowling and was a secretary and treasurer for her bowling league, going to family functions in Texas and California and enjoyed her birthday club in Northwood, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and many friends.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church and her church circle in Northwood.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, LaVon Kuhlmann of Northwood; three children and their families; daughter, Gail Kuhlmann and her children, Gerad, and Josh Kuhlmann and Cody Cox of Northwood, daughter, Linda Carlson of Northwood, and a son-in-law, Steve Carlson of Manly and their children, Amber, Laura, and Garrett Carlson all of Northwood, daughter, Kathy Rush and her husband Kurt and their children, Aaron and Jordan Rush of Mason City; mother-in-law, Hazel Kuhlmann of Northwood; a twin sister, Joanne McCrillis and her husband, Dick of Rockwall, Texas; a brother, Don Volger and his wife Donna of Glendale, Calif.; five sisters-in-law, Cherie Volger of Apple Valley, Calif., Rosela Volger of Idaho, Marcile Perry and her husband, Dean of New Ulm, Minn., Beverly Davis and her husband, Glen of Fort Meyers, Fla., Dodie Belanger and her husband, Jerry of New Hope, Minn., several nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and many friends.

Clarence Heide was born April 27, 1917, in a sod house in Rhame, N.D., the son of Edwin and Albertina (Vagts) Heide.

At an early age, Clarence’s family moved to Cresco, Iowa, and he later graduated from Cresco High School.

On Aug. 6, 1949, Clarence was united in marriage to Ella Mae Knop in Clear Lake, Iowa. The couple made their home in Dubuque, Iowa, where Clarence was the proprietor of a Dixie Crème Donut Shop.

They later moved to Waterloo and subsequently to Des Moines, where Clarence was an agent for Allstate Insurance Company.

Clarence was very active in his church, Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Moines, where he served numerous years on various boards as an elder, trustee, president and treasurer of the congregation.

He enjoyed golf and fishing was his number one love.

Clarence is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Ella Mae, of Mason City; his son, David Heide, of Saint Paul, Minn.; his sister, Gertrude Rassman, of Claremont, Minn.; a special niece and friend, Norma Jean Gobeli of Mason City; as well as many other relatives and friends.

On March 31, 1962, he was united in marriage to Linda Kellogg at the First Methodist Church in Charles City.

Terry was employed for 31 years at the Oliver and White Farm Equipment Company.

He was a member of Saint John Lutheran Church.

His interests included watching Hawkeye football and basketball, trout fishing, gardening, playing cards and times around the campfire while camping.

Terry’s family was very important to him and he devoted all the time he could to them.

Survived by sister, Fern Keough, of Mason City; nephew, Richard Keough, of Mason City; great-nephew, Richard Keough Jr., of Fresno, Calif.; three great-great-nephews; and one great-great-great-niece.

FOREST CITY - Paul O. Larson, 79, of Forest City, died Monday (June 30, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Paul Owen Larson was born Nov. 26, 1923, at Adams, Minn., the first child of Hogan and Mabel (Viste) Larson. His father (Haakon August) was an immigrant from Sweden and his mother was a first generation Norwegian.

Paul graduated from Adams High School in 1941 and then worked at the Masonic Home farm near Bloomington, Minn.

He went into the Army in 1945 and drove heavy equipment on the loading docks in the South Pacific. Returning from the war, he was introduced by friends to Joyce Petersen.

They were married in Bloomington, Minn., on Oct. 15, 1949.

Paul and Joyce's first home was in Blooming Prairie, Minn., where both of their daughters were born. After working at an implement dealer and a creamery, Paul decided to go to college to further his career. The family moved to Houston, Texas and Paul spent four years at the University of Houston to earn a degree in diesel engineering.

While going to school he supported his family as a welder and working in the gas station business with his brothers-in-law, Maurice and Stanley Petersen and Kelly Clark.

In 1966, the family moved to Cedar Falls, where Paul worked at the John Deere research and development center in the engines division. He retired from John Deere in June 1987 and Paul and Joyce moved to an acreage near Forest City where he could enjoy working outside and helping his son-in-law, Mike, on the farm.

He was very happy that both of his daughters married men with a love of farming and green and yellow equipment in the shed.

Paul was an active member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. He had a good church choir baritone voice.

Paul is survived by his wife, Joyce, and his two daughters and their families, Paula Petersburg and her husband, Fred, of Clear Lake, their children, Cole and Lara, and Inga Nelson and her husband, Mike, of Forest City, and their children, Metta, Britta and August. He has two brothers and one sister and their spouses: Don and Norma Larson of Adams, Minn., Willard and Ardys Larson of Woodbury, Minn., Ruth and Bill Dohrn of Loveland, Colo., and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers-in-law and a niece.

Thomas was born Aug. 3, 1916, in Badger, Iowa, the son of Solvie B. and Josephine (Rorheim) Nodland. He started school in a one room school near Kenyon, Minn. He went to four different schools in the eight years. They lived in Minnesota and went to five different schools in Iowa before completing his education in Eagle Grove, Iowa.

Thomas served in the United States Army during World War II and was awarded two bronze stars for the campaign he was involved in. He spent one year and eight months in the U.S. as an infantrymen guarding the coast of California from a Japanese attack.

Then he spent one year and nine months in foreign service in the Army Engineers attaining the rank of Technician 4th Grade. He was in-volved in the invasion of Saipan and also Okinawa.

He was on Okinawa when the Atomic Bomb was dropped on Hiroshima at 8:15 a.m. on Aug. 6, 1945, when a fireball in the morning sky changed man's history. The bomb ended World War II. Thomas was discharged from the army on Jan. 14, 1946.

Following the service, Thomas farmed and did various things. He married Viola (McCauley) Roberts July 25, 1955, in Canton, South Dakota. She was born at Decatur, Ill. on Feb. 5, 1909, to Lyman and Minnie McCauley.

He farmed in the Klemme area for 25 years, Rockwell area for three years and re-tired from farming in 1977 and moved into Clear Lake in 1978.

Thomas and Viola liked to quilt and be in church activities, garden, take walks and look at the lake.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, Iowa, I.O.O.F. Lodge, American Legion and Farm Bureau.

Thomas is survived by his stepchildren, Bertha Tackle and her husband, Charles, of Webster City, and Roger Roberts Sr. and his wife, Sharlene, of Laurel; 14 step-grandchildren; 14 step-great grandchildren; several step-great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice Glestad, of Wanamingo, Minn. and Segney Crement and her husband, John, of Belle Air Bluffs, Fla.; two brothers, Tory Nodland and his wife, Alta, of Spirit Lake, and Virgil "Jory" Nodland and his wife, Virginia, of Lakewood, Colo.; sister-in-law, Althea Nodland, of Chanhassen, Minn.; 13 nieces and nephews.

ALGONA - A memorial service for Grace E. Skarpness, 90, of Algona, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the chapel of the Wilson Funeral Home in Algona, with the Rev. Dave Heister-kamp officiating. Grace E. Stephenson, the daughter of Rozelle and Bertha (Green) Stephenson was born April 27, 1913, in Forest City. She attended school in Forest City and after graduating from high school there, she attended Waldorf College. She later earn-ed a bachelor's degree in education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.

Grace married Joseph J. Skarpness on June 15, 1951. They made their home in the Forest City area and she taught in country schools in Winnebago County.

From 1965 to 1978 she taught in elementary and junior high schools in Algona. She retired in 1978 after a 44 year teaching career.

She enjoyed gardening and flowers and was a strong sports fan, especially favoring the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs.

She loved crocheting and made many afghans for family members and friends.

Grace Skarpness died at the age of 90 years on Tuesday (July 1, 2003) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center.

She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Rozella and Jack Harder, of Ames; one daughter-in-law and care giver, Elene Price, of Lakota; one sister-in-law, Jean Steph-enson, of Earp, Calif.; two grandsons, Jason Skarpness and his wife, Michelle, of Mason City and Travis Skarp-ness, of Des Moines; one granddaughter, Tammy Skarpness and her fiance, Zane Loos, of Barron, Wis.; and two great-grandchildren, Chase and Alexis Skarpness. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and extended family friends, David, Dan and Douglas Price.

CHARLES CITY - Dustin "Dutt" Wilson, a resident of Verona, Wis., formerly of Mason City and Charles City, died Thursday (June 26, 2003) at Verona, the result of a homidcide.

Memorial services for Dustin Wilson will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Revs. David Werges and Dennis Niezwaag, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Dustin James Wilson was born Sept. 20, 1985, at Mason City, the son of Larry Paulsen and Sandra Wilson. He at-tended school in Mason City and Charles City. "Dutt" moved to Verona, Wis., a year ago and worked as a carpet layer.

He liked to hunt and fish. His favorite animal was his cat. Music was also important to "Dutt" and you would find him listening to music all the time.

"Dutt" liked to spend time with his friends, family, especially his brothers, and there was always a special place in his heart for his mom.

Living family members in-clude his mother, Sandra, and step-father, Mike Snook of Charles City; his father, Larry Paulsen of Michigan; two brothers, Jason Wilson and David Snook, both of Charles City; two sisters, Jennifer Snook of Charles City, and Jacque Paulsen of Mason City; maternal grandmother, Karen Uker, of Charles City; paternal grandmother, Marilyn Aldridge; step-grandparents, David (Janice) Snook of Mason City; and a great-grandmother, Ardell Sullivan.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Delmar Wilson; and paternal grandfather, Harold Paulsen.

Dorothy was born July 1, 1923, at Hayward, Minn., to Curtis H. and Viola M. (Larsen) Briggs. At an early age, she moved to Albert Lea, Minn., where she grew up and attended school.

Dorothy was united in marriage to John S. Kendall and they lived in Minneapolis, Minn., where John worked for the post office.

When he retired, they moved to Cleveland, Minn. When John died in 1990, Dorothy moved to Hanlontown and lived there until moving to Mason City about eight years ago.

Dorothy is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Rattner of Las Vegas, Nev.; three grandchildren, Kendall Rattner and Terri and Tony Kendall; one brother, Curtiss Briggs, of Oregon; and two sisters, Sharon Kyte of Welcome, Minn., and Virginia Dralla of Hanlontown.

BELMOND — Faye Arlene Colby, 91, a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center, died Tuesday (July 1, 2003) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Faye Arlene Ferris was born Oct. 15, 1911, at Welcome, Minn., the daughter of Herbert H. B. and Georgia (Hudson) Ferris. At age of six months, she moved with her family to Joice, Iowa.

Faye attended schools in .Joice and Lake Mills. She then continued her schooling at the State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and at Drake University in Des Moines.

Faye was united in marriage to Hubert Ellsworth “Hub” Colby on July 7, 1930, at Princeton, Mo. Faye and Hub shared in nearly 72 years of companionship.

She taught rural schools at Goodell, Iowa, at CAL Community Schools and parochial school in Geneva, Ill., from 1965-70 when she retired.

In addition, Faye was a librarian at the Belmond Public Library for 10 years.

She was a lifelong homemaker, wife and devoted mother who received great joy from caring for her family.

She especially enjoyed times spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to teach them various things, playing games with them, and they enjoyed staying at Grandma Faye’s house.

Faye was active in St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond. She looked forward to church group Christmas parties and various other activities.

She loved animals and caring for orphan pets and wildlife. She and Hub very much enjoyed their dogs.

Favorite pastimes included sewing, quilting and knitting sweaters and other keepsakes for her grandchildren.

She was still actively knitting well into her 80s. Faye also enjoyed playing bridge and playing the organ in her home.

Faye and Hub had lived for periods of time in Joice, Boone, Belmond, Chicago and Lake Mills before returing to Belmond in 1972 following their retirement.

She became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in October 2000. While a resident there, she looked forward to participating in church services at the facility.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her daughter, Harriet “Nubby” Woodin and husband, Richard, of Clarion; and a son, David Colby and his wife, Kay, of Silver Bay, Minn.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hub, in April 2003; and a sister, Velma Paulson.

SISTER MARIROSE ANSTOETTER, RSM

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. — Sister Marirose Anstoetter, RSM, died on July 2, 2003, at McAuley Retirement Center. She was 78 years of age and had been a Sister of Mercy for 60 years.

She was born Ethel Clara Anstoetter on Feb. 4, 1925, one of 10 children of Bernard and Lidwina (Kramer) Anstoetter. She was baptized at St. Francis Xavier Church in Dyersville, Iowa, and grew up on a farm near Farley, Iowa.

She graduated from St. Joseph High School in Farley in 1942 and worked in a de-partment store before joining the Sisters of Mercy in Detroit in September of 1943. She received the name Sister Marirose, professed temporary vows on March 12, 1946, and made perpetual vows on Aug. 16, 1949.

Sister Marirose earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Mercy College of Detroit and master’s degree from Wayne State University. She served in Mercy Hospitals for many years, primarily in Iowa.

She supervised patient care in Sioux City, Fort Dodge and Dubuque, was administrator of Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque, served as president and CEO of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City and was an assistant chaplain in Clinton. She also worked with patients and staff at Mercy Hospitals in Ann Arbor and Pontiac, Mich., and Dyer, Ind. Sister Marirose later returned to Dubuque where she assisted in the care of retired sisters. She retired to McAuley Center in 1996 and continued to extend herself to those in need as a volunteer.

Throughout her years in health care and in retirement, Sister Marirose maintained a vital interest in each person she met. She was known as a compassionate listener and recognized for her gracious hospitality, sincere faith and warm smile. She maintained an active interest in her family and was looking forward to a family reunion in July and the celebration of her diamond jubilee in August.

Sister Marirose is surviv- ed by her sisters, Marian Bell, of Manchester, Iowa, Esther Joyce, of Rapid City, S.D., Alice Weiser, of New Providence, N.J., and Mildred Koehler, of Forsyth, Ill.; brothers, Charles and Jerry Anstoetter, of Farley, Iowa, and John Anstoetter, of East Dubuque, Ill.; sisters-in-law, Janaan Krapfl, of Monticello, Iowa, and Shirley Maiers, of Dubuque, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; and the members of her Mercy community.

There will be a welcoming prayer service at 3 p.m. on Sunday at McAuley Center, 28750 Eleven Mile Road, Farmington Hills, Mich., and a 7 p.m. scripture service.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday at McAuley Center Chapel. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, Mich.

Chuck served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he moved to Mason City.

He married Karen L. Daniels on Dec. 8, 1957, in Mason City.

Chuck owned and operated Shill’s Maid Rite for 30 years, retiring in 1996.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge and the Masonic Lodge and was a past member of the Shrine and a lifetime member of the VFW.

Chuck is survived by his children, Scott Shill and wife, Richelle, of Eau Claire, Wis., Tim Shill and wife, Char, of Nome, Alaska, James Shill of Mason City and Carla Quail and husband, Mark, of Spencer; grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan, Christopher, Tyler, Logan, Amy, Liana and Dustin; sisters, Florence Funke of State Center and Catherine “Kate” Booth and husband, Warren, of Cedar Rapids.

Gladys Bertha Heitland was born April 5, 1915, to Edze and Selma (Daniels) Aukes, rural Woden. She attended country school in Grant Township.

Gladys attended Sunday School at the country school and then joined the Congregational Church in 1933, where she was an active member and was baptized as an adult.

On Oct. 15, 1935, Gladys was united in marriage to Clarence Heitland at the Congregational Church in Buffalo Center. They resided on a farm north of Buffalo Center for four years, then moved northeast of Buffalo Center where they lived until 1976 when they retired to their new home they had built in Buffalo Center.

Gladys enjoyed time spent with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, making quilts, crocheting, sewing projects, gardening and playing games with her friends. For many years she provided transportation for friends needing a ride and delivering meals to shut-ins. She worked with Women’s Fellowship Missionary Work Group and was a willing helper at the Senior Center.

Gladys became a resident of the Timely Mission Nursing Home in January of 2002.

Left to cherish her memory are her five children: Leona and her husband, Carroll Van Hove, Buffalo Center; Gerald (Jerry) and his wife, Laura Heitland, Clear Lake; Donna and her husband, Dale Bredeson, Estherville; Judy Hanson, Trenton, Mo., and Dale and his wife, Carol Heitland, Forest City; 12 grandchildren: Bonnie Wilson, Pam Pitkin, Lisa Arians, Jason Heitland, Daniel Bredeson, Douglas Bredeson, Pat Hanson, Sheri Stufflebean, Dulcie Price, Tim Hanson, Kendra Amundson and Kayla Meredith; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Clara and her husband, Herb Klasse; one brother, Walter and his wife, Greta Aukes, and one sister-in-law, Margaret Heitland.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clarence who died in 1979; one granddaughter, Cindy Kotewa and two infant grandsons.

Gladys will always be remembered for her smile and caring ways for family and friends.

She taught country school for three-and-one-half years. On Jan. 10, 1930, she married Tilden Kingland. In 1943, they bought the Kingland family farm and resided there for 40 years. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and playing the piano.

She is survived by her three children, Wayne Kingland, Forest City, Norma (Paul) Vlieger, Norwalk, and Don Kingland, Manly; three sisters, Bernice Tweed, Decorah, Gladys Almelien, Joice and Mildred Slattum, Albert Lea, Minn., nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

NEAL MICHAELSEN

TITONKA — Neal Olvert Michaelsen, 90, of Titonka, died Wednesday (July 2, 2003) in Apple Valley, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Bancroft, with the Rev. Don Mueller, the Rev. Don Michaelsen and the Rev. Randy Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Buffalo Township Cemetery, Titonka.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Titonka.

Neal Olvert Michaelsen was born on June 2, 1913, in Iron River, Wis., to Olvert and Mary (Heifner) Michaelsen. He and Vollina Marie Alke were united in marriage on June 18, 1941. The couple farmed in the Titonka area and also established the Michaelsen Truck Line.

Neal received Christ as his personal Savior in 1926. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Bancroft, and served as a Sunday school teacher and as a deacon for many years. He is now reunited with his best friend, his wife, who went to be with the Lord on Easter Sunday 2002. Since that time, Neal has been making his home with his children and their families. Neal showed his family by his example, the true meaning of a loving father. His family not only appreciated him in his role as a father and grandfather, but also depended on him as a great spiritual mentor, a teacher and a financial advisor.

He is survived by his children, Gary Michaelsen (Sharon), Mason City; Peg Egel (Ken), Apple Valley, Minn.; Greg Michaelsen (Nancy), Carmel, Ind., and Dar Michaelsen (Carmen), Mentone, Ind. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, a sister, Leola Nelson, Sioux City, and a sister-in-law, Barbara Michaelsen, Titonka.

Neal was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Lorena McColley; a brother, Don Michaelsen; granddaughter, Crisanda Michaelsen, and granddaughter-in-law, Karen Michaelsen.

In closing, we thank CALVARY! Because of Calvary, Neal was a changed man. Because of Calvary, he taught his family how to love our Lord, how to love our spouse, and how to love our family! Thanks, Dad — you indeed left a great heritage!

COLONEL M. PIERSOL

LAKE MILLS — Colonel M. Piersol, 88, of Lake Mills, died Wednesday (July 2, 2003) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday (today), at Bethany Lutheran Church, Thompson, with the Rev. Mark Decker officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church this morning. Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, is in charge of arrangements.

Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Colonel Meredith Piersol was born Aug. 11, 1914, in Rockwell, Iowa, the son of Colonel E. and Nora (Hansel) Piersol. Following graduation from Mason City High School he was employed in the family restaurant business. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945.

He was united in marriage to Jennie Hovda on Aug. 12, 1943, in Medford, Ore. Colonel and Jennie lived in Los Angeles, Calif., from 1945-1948, where Colonel was employed as a machinist. They returned to Thompson, Iowa, in 1948. Colonel farmed for a brief period of time after which he was employed by the Winnebago Rural Telephone Association until his retirement in 1979. Colonel and Jennie lived in Thompson until June 2002, when they moved to Lake Mills. Colonel enjoyed reading and doing woodworking in his retirement years, but his special joy was his family.

Colonel is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jennie; their son, Bruce (Ann), Red Lake Falls, Minn.; daughter, Linda, Minnetonka, Minn.; grandson, Brett (Mindy) Piersol, Red Lake Falls, Minn.; granddaughter, Heather (Patrick) Thibert, East Grand Forks, Minn.; great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Courtney Piersol, Red Lake Falls, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Esther (Patrick) Grames, St. Paul, Minn., Helen Hovda, Mesa, Ariz., and Doris Hovda, Forest City; a brother-in-law, Andrew Larsen, Sun City, Ariz., along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Lucille Truitt and Catherine Eggert.
