EDNA MAE WIELAND

OSAGE — Edna Wieland, 80, of Osage, died Monday (July 14, 2003) at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Edna was born December 9, 1922, in Osage, the daughter of Eloi “Ed” and Alice (Richardson) Engebretson. She attended rural schools and graduated from Osage High School.

Edna was united in marriage to Fred Wieland Jr. on June 27, 1945, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Two children were born to this marriage.

Edna was a homemaker and farm wife. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Edna’s hobbies included crossword puzzles, reading, watching Wheel of Fortune, cross stitching and gardening.

Edna will be sadly missed by all of her family members.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. Interment will be at the Osage Cemetery in Osage.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Those thankful for having shared in Edna’s Life include one son, Don Wieland and his wife, Sherry, of Osage; one daughter, Dianna Lowe of Stacyville; six grandchildren, John Wieland and his wife, Hope, Bryan Wieland and his wife, Michelle, Lisa Emerson and her husband, Kirk, LaVonne Wolf and her husband, Pat, Michael Hobkirk and his wife, Suzanne, and Mark Hobkirk; 11 great-grandchildren, Grant and Garrett Wieland, Natasha Wieland, Sara, Amy and Alex Emerson, Samantha and Jessica Wolf, and Adria, Rachel and Joshua Hobkirk; one brother, Charles Engebretson (Donna) of Osage; two sisters, Joan Engebretson, of Osage and Mary Lou Martin (Walt) of Humboldt.

BLOOMFIELD — Marlin Brent Perry, 38, of Mason City and formerly of Bloomfield, died Monday (July 14, 2003) at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, with the Rev. Loyal Hepker officiating. Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery in Appanoose County. The body was cremated.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomingfield.

MAURINE M. JACKSON

OSAGE — Maurine M. Jackson, 90, of Osage died Monday (July 7, 2003) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville.

Maurine was born July 4, 1913, in Union Township, near Stacyville, the daughter of Edward and Edna (Woolworth) Gerbig.

She spent her youth and attended elementary school in the Union Township area and was a graduate of Osage High School. Maurine attended the Cosmopolitan School of Beauty in Des Moines, where she completed her Beautician’s Certificate.

Upon returning to Osage, she owned and operated Maurine’s Beauty Salon in Osage for over 40 years.

Maurine was a long-time member of the United Church of Christ in Osage. She served as a Sunday school teacher for over 20 years and was an active member of the Mayflower Circle.

Maurine was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and held many offices, including Worthy Matron.

She and her husband, Clayton, enjoyed membership and riding activities with the Cedar Valley Saddle Club in Osage.

Maurine became involved with the maintenance and preservation of the Union Presbyterian Church near Stacyville, where she attended in her youth.

Through her efforts in research and application procedures, the Union Presbyterian Church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in May of 1977. For many years, Maurine enjoyed preparing for and opening this historic site to visitors during Memorial Day week.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Church of Christ in Osage, with the Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan, officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

She is survived by one daughter, Maradee Fox and husband, Larry, of Osage; one sister, Irene Schaeffer of Eagle Grove; seven grandchildren, Cheryl (Jackson) Brandau of Osage, Ed Jackson of Kihei, Hawaii, Wanda (Jackson) Dahle, of Lake Mills, David Jackson of Newport, Minn., Mike Fox of Dallas, Texas, Jim Fox of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Corey Lynn (Fox) Harper of Aiken, S.C.; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Edna Gerbig; her husband, Clayton Jackson; a son, Dennis Jackson; a great-grandson, Cole Fox; and a brother-in-law, Verne Schaeffer.

ARLENE GREENWOOD

BELMOND — Arlene Greenwood, 77, of Belmond, passed away Sunday (July 13, 2003) at the Belmond Health Care Center. Following a long battle with multiple myloma cancer, Arlene was taken home in God’s care.

Funeral services for Arlene Greenwood will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond with Pastor Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be in Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation for Arlene Greenwood will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home 111 Luick’s Lane S. in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Arlene, the daughter of Milford Jennings and Gladys Annette (Soma) Mehl, was born Oct. 15, 1925, near Kanawha. She attended country school near Kanawha, then attended school in Belmond and graduated from Belmond High School in 1943.

Arlene, the oldest of six children, helped care for her brothers and sisters when they were younger.

On Aug. 6, 1950, Arlene was united in marriage with Thomas A. Greenwood Jr. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond. The couple made their home in Belmond for their entire married life, and Arlene continued to live there until recently entering Belmond Health Care Center.

While attending high school Arlene was employed in the high school office, ABC Grocery, and First State Bank in Belmond.

Following her marriage to Tom, she continued to work at First State Bank until 1951. Arlene was a full time homemaker and mother as her children grew.

She began her employment at Steele Memorial Clinic in Belmond in 1966 and retired in 1988.

After retirement, Arlene cared for her husband Thomas the last three years of his life.

Arlene was a baptized and confirmed member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active in circles and the Lutheran Daughters of the Reformation; she enjoyed her church fellowship and friends.

She also enjoyed baking, gardening, canning and preserving. Arlene liked spending time in the outdoors with her husband Thomas.

Left to cherish Arlene’s memory are her children, John Greenwood and his wife, Sheila, of Forest City, Tim Greenwood and his wife, Rose, of Polk City, and Carolyn Greenwood and Doug Pals of Belmond; eight grandchildren, Christine (Ruben) Cantu, Heather (A.J.) Welch, Tom (Angie) Greenwood, Jennifer, Timmy, and Katie Greenwood, Noah Reed, and Tara (Colin) Steenhard; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Brady, Tanner, and Cameron; two sisters, Eunice Banning of Belmond and Lois Patterson of Belmond; two brothers, the Rev. Raymond Mehl and wife, LaMae, of Chisago City, Minn., and Dr. Eugene Mehl and his wife, DeEtta, of Whitehouse, Ohio; several aunts, an uncle, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Thomas A. Greenwood Jr.; and her youngest brother, Marlin Mehl.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church, Wright County Hospice, Steele Memorial Clinic, or Belmond Health Care Center.

She always believed, “The Lord will provide”.

CEDAR RAPIDS — Donald M. Bowman, 89, of 130 Thompson Drive S.E., died Monday (July 14, 2003) at Manor Care in Cedar Rapids.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories with Chaplin David Higdon of the Meth-Wick Community and the Rev. Laura Smith of Kenwood Park United Methodist Church officiating. Entombment will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

MICHAEL A. DALTON

FOREST CITY — Michael A. Dalton, 38, of Forest City, died Monday (July 14, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Forest City with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City.

Michael A. Dalton was born Oct. 1, 1964, at the Forest City Municipal Hospital, the son of Larry and Shirley (Bugor) Dalton. He was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church in Forest City and graduated from the Forest City High School, Class of 1983.

Michael resided in Forest City, working at Winnebago Industries and later at the Jiffy Lube in Mason City, until failing health necessitated his retirement.

He suffered from diabetes, requiring a pancreas transplant at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., in 2001, a foot amputation in 2002, and suffered from failing eye sight.

Michael enjoyed his job at Jiffy Lube, meeting and visiting with the customers.

He loved stock car races, and riding his motorcycle until his heath complications no longer permitted it. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and daughters.

Michael married Kim Maseco in 1989. They had two daughters, Kaci Mae and Kali Marie. The marriage ended in divorce and on July 10, 1999, Michael married Danette Potter.

Michael is survived by his wife Danette, his daughters, Kaci, Kali and Sarah; his parents, Larry and Shirley Dalton; and a host of friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Scott in infancy and Robert in 1994; and his grandparents.

CLEAR LAKE — James L. March, 69, formerly of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (July 15, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Clarence Baalson officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Latimer with military honors conducted by the Hansen-Have American Legion Post 658 of Latimer.

James was born Feb. 14, 1934, at Hampton, to Cyril T. and Inez (Peters) March.

James attended country school until fourth grade when the family moved and he attended Coulter Elementary School.

He graduated from CAL Community School.

James was baptized and confirmed at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Latimer. After high school he was in-ducted into the Army in April 1954 and served in Korea until February 1956.

He then attended the American Institute of Business and following graduation worked in the Des Moines area.

In 1960 he purchased the Clear Lake Dairy Queen, which he owned and operated until he retired and sold the business in 1995.

James is survived by two sisters, Marilyn Davison and her husband, Warren, of Mason City, and Betty Williams, of Harlan; seven nieces and nephews, Patricia Behm and her husband, Charles, of Boone, Sherry Candee and her husband Russell, of Waterloo, Linda Davison, of Minneapolis, Minn., Diana Grassel and her husband, Gary, of Billings, Mont., the Rev. Michael Williams and his wife Amy, of Elk Horn, Debbie Becker, of Omaha, Neb., and Mark Williams, of Denver, Colo., and several grand-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Rachel Evelyn Johnson was born on July 10, 1910, in Pipestone, Minn., the daughter of Hubert and Violet (Usher) Jackson.

At the age of two, Rachel moved to Fort Dodge, then moved to Clear Lake at the age of 12, moved south of Mason City until 16 and at-tended Mason City High School, then returned to Clear Lake.

Rachel was united in marriage to Kenneth Johnson on May 4, 1968, in Albert Lea, Minn. They lived in Clear Lake. Kenneth passed away Jan. 15, 1981. Rachel continued to live in Clear Lake until moving to the Manly Nursing Home in Manly in 2001.

Rachel worked at Clean Towel Service in Mason City and also at the Clear Lake Bakery as store manager for 14 years, retiring in 1962.

Rachel was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, where she has been involved with Bible study and Christian Women. Rachel was involved with Rebekahs and a past member of the Relief Corps.

Rachel enjoyed crafts, hand-work, sewing and studying the Bible.

Rachel is survived by a sister, Marcella Thomas, of Clear Lake, and a brother, Andrew Jackson, of Manly, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, a brother, Fred Jackson, and her husband.

OSAGE — Gladys Mable Shoger, 94, of Osage, died Wednesday (July 16, 2003) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Gladys was born May 27, 1909, in Cedar Township, Mitchell County, the daughter of Gustav and Bertina (Torblaa) Olson. She was educated in rural schools, and graduated in 1927 from Cedar Valley Seminary in Osage.

Gladys was united in marriage to Fred Shoger on Jan. 19, 1929 in Osage. They farm-ed in Rock Township, retiring and moving to Osage in 1970. Fred died January 20, 1976.

She was a active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was a volunteer at Mitchell County Regional Health Center and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxillary.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Christian F. Gugel officiating. Interment will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery in rural Osage.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

She is survived by one son, Dale (Kathryn) Shoger of Osage; one daughter, Darlene (Arthur) Anderson of Big Lake, Minn.; four granddaughters, Linda (Kenneth) Brandau, of Rudd, Donna (Robert) Counsell, of Osage, Judy (Andreas) Schramm, of St. Paul, Minn., and Marcia (James) Rosendahl, of Osage, and 12 great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth (Betty) Gabel was born Nov. 5, 1918, at Belmond, the daughter of Fred and Marie (Lorenz) Gabel. She was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church, Belmond, Nov. 24, 1918, by Pastor Knoll. She was confirmed April 9, 1933, at St. John’s and has been a lifetime member of this church. She was very active in the circle and Women of the Church.

Betty attended country schools and the Alexander Consolidated School at Alexander, Iowa. One of her proudest accomplishments was receiving her G.E.D. diploma through the continuing education program in Belmond in 1988 at the age of 70.

Betty enjoyed working as a clerk for over 40 years in various variety stores in Belmond.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 59 years; was a volunteer answering the telephone for Care Car; a member of the Belmond Hospital Auxiliary, and belonged to the Grandmother’s Club and the Senior Citizens.

She also enjoyed sewing with the ALCW at the church, making quilts and lap robes.

She loved gardening, embroidery, and making baby comforters and quilts for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

Betty was married to Andrew Earl Koppernagel, who died Aug. 7, 1957, and to Joseph J. Lepper, who died Oct. 13, 1976.

In 1993, she sold her home of 49 years and moved to the Gabrielson Apartments.

In 1994, she moved to the Belmond Community Retirement Center, where she enjoyed the coffees and group get-togethers.

CLEAR LAKE — James L. March, 69, formerly of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (July 15, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Clarence Baalson officiating. James was born Feb. 14, 1934, at Hampton, to Cyril T. & Inez (Peters) March.

James attended country school until fourth grade when the family moved and he attended Coulter Elementary School.

He graduated from CAL Community School.

James was baptized and confirmed at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Latimer. After high school, he was inducted into the Army in April of 1954 and served in Korea until February of 1956.

He then attended the American Institute of Business and following graduation worked in the Des Moines area.

In 1960, he purchased the Clear Lake Dairy Queen, which he owned and operated until he retired and sold the business in 1995.

James is survived by two sisters, Marilyn Davison and her husband, Warren, of Mason City, and Betty Williams, of Harlan; seven nieces and nephews, Patricia Behm and her husband, Charles, of Boone, Sherry Candee and her husband Russell, of Waterloo, Linda Davison, of Minneapolis, Minn., Diana Grassel and her husband, Gary, of Billings, Mont., the Rev. Michael Williams and his wife, Amy, of Elk Horn, Debbie Becker, of Omaha, Neb., and Mark Williams, of Denver, Colo., and several grand-nieces and nephews.

GREENE — Donovan “Whitey” D. Ruffridge, 74, of 521 N. Fourth St. in Greene, died Wednesday evening (July 16, 2003) the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services celebrating Don’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 319 Traer St. E. in Greene, with the Rev. Paul Uzel and the Rev. Galen Smith officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. today at St. Peter Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 324 Traer St. E. A remembrance prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. at the fellowship hall.

Final interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery with flag folding honors by Tack Barnett Post 268 of the American Legion.

Don was born one of five children to Earl and Clara (Rohwedder) Ruffridge Sr. in Floyd County, Iowa, on April 17, 1929. As a lifelong resident of Greene, he graduated from the high school in 1946.

He was employed by Bathke Oil Co. as a tank wagon operator until he purchased the company. He remained the owner/operator until selling it in April of 1997. He then worked as a tank wagon operator on a part-time basis for Davis Oil.

Whitey honorably served his country in the Army from October 1946 to March 1948. He served with the 17th Infantry in Korea.

For over 50 years, he served his community on the volunteer fire department as the pump operator and was honored with distinction when he retired from fighting fires.

He and his wife, Pauline, were consistent fans of the Greene Rams football and basketball teams. Don was on the chain gang for 50 years at the home football games.

Donovan was an active member of the Rams’ Quarterback Club (boosters) and was a member of the American Legion and the Greene Commercial Club.

He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he was united in marriage to the “Love of his Life,” Pauline Kingery, on Sept. 26, 1948. To this union were born two children.

He also served the church as the secretary/treasurer and on the building committee.

They spent one month shy of 54 years together.

He enjoyed golf, bird watching and sharing his goldfish from the summer pond with the school in the winter.

Those who are left to cherish Whitey’s life include his two children, Yvonne and her husband, Tom Stibal, of Mason City; Doug and his wife, Mary Ruffridge, of Oskaloosa; and their children, Brandon and his wife Karla; and great-grandchildren, Elle and Shea all of Pocahontas; and daughter Amy and her husband, Todd Huffman and their children, Jack and Mia of Omaha.

Also surviving are two in- town grandchildren, Eric and Matthew Ulrich; his two sisters, Helen Green, of Waterloo and Sharon Lorenzen, of Webster City, and two brothers, Bob Ruffridge, of Wills Point, Texas, and Earl Ruffridge Jr. of Marshalltown, Iowa; many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends from near and far.

TITONKA — Douglas K. Mechler was born June 18, 1933, in Algona, Iowa, the son of Clarence and Frances Koestler Mechler. His mother died from complications due to childbirth, so his aunts, Orpha and Hollys, played a special role in his upbringing before his father married Louise Conradi. He attended school in Titonka, graduating from high school in 1951. After his schooling he worked with his father on the family farm.

In 1953, he joined the Army for two years, 18 months of which were spent in Germany. He returned to the farm in October of 1955.

On Dec. 7, 1955, Douglas was united in marriage to Eunice Dontje at the First Presbyterian Church in Lakota, Iowa.

After their marriage, the couple lived on the family farm where Douglas continued farming with his father and eventually took over operations.

He was particularly proud of his family and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a farmer at heart and also enjoyed woodworking, golfing, square dancing, playing cards with friends and spending winters in Texas with his wife.

Doug was a member of Good Hope Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and was a past president.

In his last years, he found particular enjoyment in his family, life and land.

Douglas died unexpectedly on Wednesday (July 16, 2003) at the age of 70.

He is survived by his wife, Eunice June, of Titonka; children: Dean Mechler and wife, Deborah, of Spencer, Iowa; Brian Mechler of Mankato, Minn.; Kent Mechler and wife, Heidi, of Sheffield; Dale Mechler and wife, Connie, of Algona, and grandchildren, Kyle, Karen, Michael, Alex, Timo, Christin, Alyssa and Jacob. Also surviving are a brother-in-law, Eldon Dontje and wife Mildred of Ledyard, Iowa; special “brother,” Wayne Mechler and wife Bobbi of Green Valley, Ariz.; aunt, Hollys Shelgran of Lamar, Mo., and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers in infancy.

Alice married Wendell Watts on Sept. 27, 1942, in Northwood and celebrated their 60th anniversary in September of 2002. Wendell preceded her in death on March 7, 2003.

Alice enjoyed people and baking. She supplied the town with many good things to eat, and was particularly noted for her pies and doughnuts.

She was a dispatcher for the transit van and worked as a waitress for many years.

Alice and Wendell enjoyed fishing and had many great adventures doing just that.

Her greatest passion was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wendell, and two brothers, Donald and Arnold.

She attended New Hartford School. She married Roy C. Pike on December 27, 1939. They farmed in Mitchell and Worth counties and later moved to Northwood. Babe worked at the Viking Restaurant and later at the school cafeteria for 16 years in Northwood.

She is survived by four children,Robert Pike and wife, Darla, of Forest City, Judy Pike of Mason City, Gerald Pike and wife, Kathy, of Cottage Grove, Minn., and Linda Rice and husband, Richard, of Lake Mills; sisters, Arvada Pickering of Cedar Falls, and Audrey Schoeman of New Hartford, Iowa; brother, George Naber and wife, Dorothy, of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Marie Harris was born on June 17, 1919, the daughter of Jens Pedersen and Ida Bakken in Forest City. At the age of eleven she moved to Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School. Marie was united in marriage to Delmar Harris on February 15, 1938, in Crystal Lake, Iowa. They lived in Mason City all of their life with the exception of ten years when they lived on a farm near London, Minnesota. In 1962 they returned to Iowa to live on a farm southeast of Mason City. Following the death of her husband, Delmar, Marie moved to Mason City.

MASON CITY - Margaret V. Pfeiffer, 89, of Mason City died Friday, (July 18, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Memorial services for Margaret will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. A private family committal service will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Margaret was born April 18, 1914, the daughter of Jesse C. and Marian M. (Wheatley) Broughton in Sibly, Iowa.

Margaret was united in marriage to Frederick R. "Fritz" Pfeiffer on January 1, 1936 in Sibly, Iowa. She graduated from Sibly High School and attended Iowa State Teacher's College for two years. Margaret then received her teaching degree from Drake University. She taught in Hartly, Iowa, prior to her marriage. Margaret then taught at Garfield Elementary School for 13 years retiring from the Mason City School District in 1977. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, P.E.O. Chapter GN, T.T.T(BF), Retired School Personnel, church circle and was a volunteer at the gift shop at Mercy Medical Center.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Sue Vorseth and husband, Duane, of Gold Canyon, Ariz.; grandchildren; John Vorseth and son, Tyler, of Mesa, Ariz., Steve Vorseth of Tempe, Arizona; sister, Ruth Harp of Bakersfield, Calif.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fritz; son, Robert; and one brother, C.W. Broughton.

MARJORIE M. HRUBETZ

DES MOINES, Wash. - Marjorie M. Hrubetz, born to William and Catherine Penny in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, on Dec. 12, 1909, died on June 16, 2003, at the age of 93, at Wesley Homes Care Center in Des Moines, Washington.

Marjorie was raised on a farm in Rockwell, Iowa, and spent the majority of her life in Mason City. She retired from American Optical Company in 1973.

When her husband, John Hrubetz, retired from the Mason City Police Force in 1978, they moved to Seattle, Wash., to be nearer their daughter, Mary Kay, and her family. After 63 years of marriage, John died in 1996.

Marjorie was also preceded in death by a brother, W. Cecil Penny; a sister, Anne Zang-rilli and an infant grandson, Mark Edward Phillips.

Marjorie is survived by her only child, Mary Kay Keller, granddaughter, Julia Phillips and her son, Matthew; and grandson, Jeffrey Phillips, his wife, Joan, and their children, Alexander, Joel, Hannah and Andrew.

MANLY - Dorothy E. Faught, 89, of Manly and formerly of Mason City, died Friday (July 18, 2003) at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center.

Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania, Mason City with the Rev. Jim Stiles of the First United Methodist Church officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

THOMAS FRANCIS CAVANAUGH

MASON CITY - Thomas Francis Cavanaugh, 80, of 1004 Manor Drive, Mason City, died Friday (July 18, 2003) at Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 North Adams, Mason City, with the Rev. Robert Hogan officiating. Military honors will be by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association following the funeral Mass.

Following the funeral Mass and according to his wishes his body will be cremated with inurnment at a later date.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. with a scripture wake service at 5:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE, Mason City.

Thomas Francis Cavanaugh was born on October 3, 1922, in Mason City, the ninth child of Harry and Catherine (Kiley) Cavanaugh. He attended school in Mason City, graduating from Holy Family High School. He served in the Army Air Force in World War II and was wounded in action on the Burma Trail.

After the war, he married Mary Kaye Lattimer and six children were born from that union: Mary Beth Briggeman of Saudi Arabia, Robert Joseph Cavanaugh (deceased), Kathryn (John) McMillan of Elgin, Iowa, William (Martha) Cavanaugh of Charles City, Jane (Howard) Gleeman of Mendota Heights, Minn., and Margaret Cavanaugh of Burlington, Iowa.

Tom was a stone mason, a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Mason City Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

He is also survived by two sisters, Maureen Gillen, Mason City, Rita (Paul) Coyle, Lincoln, Nebraska, and a brother, James (Joyce) Cavanaugh of Charles City, Iowa; a life-long friend, Ethel Lang, of Mason City; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Joseph Cavanaugh; four sisters and four brothers.

Tom was known for his poetry, editorials, and his laughter.

IOWA FALLS - Janet Abbas, 60, of Iowa Falls, Iowa, died Friday at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services for Janet Abbas will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls, with burial at Northlawn Memory Gardens, Iowa Falls.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel, with the family receiv-ing friends between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m.

ROBERT JOHN THORSON

LELAND - Robert John Thorson, 73, of Leland, Iowa, died Friday (July 18, 2003) at the Albert Lea Medical Center in Albert Lea, Minn. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at West Prairie Lutheran Church, Leland, with Rev. Jacqueline Swanson officiating. Burial will take place at West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery, Leland.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home and again one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Robert John Thorson was born in Forest City, son of Mina (Michaelson) and John E. Thorson on September 26, 1929.

He lived on the family farm all of his life except for two years of Army service with time spent in Korea. He was a member of West Prairie Lutheran Church.

He was united in marriage to Mavis Davidson on May 30, 1954, at Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa. They enjoyed forty-nine years together.

Robert loved being on the tractor and farming, collecting toy tractors, woodworking, helping his kids with house projects and if his "girlfriend" Mavis or his children needed anything - they got it!

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Mavis, of Leland; daughter, Mary and son-in-law, Joe Consamus, and their children, Jamie and Maria all of Ames; son, John and daughter-in-law, Stacy, and their daughter, Anja and John's children, Joshua, Jessica and Jennifer all of Rochester, Minn.; son, James and daughter-in-law, Anna, James' children, Seth, Todd and Tyler, Anna's children, Samantha and Bart Dugan of Thompson; son Michael and daughter-in-law, Teresa Tsang, of Rochester, Minn.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Sarah Jo.
