MICKEY ELWIN ARNOLD

NORTHWOOD — Mickey Elwin Arnold, 76, of rural St. Ansgar, died Wednesday (July 9, 2003) at 98 8th St. N. in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at the Northwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Jensen officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Warren Township Cemetery in McCallsburg, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in Northwood.

Mickey was born on May 20, 1927, in Ellston, Iowa, to Leroy and Mary Ann (Clark) Arnold. He graduated from Grand River High School in 1944 and attended one year at American Institute of Business in Des Moines.

Mickey joined the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946. He moved to Nevada, Iowa, where he farmed.

Mickey married Geraldine Lura on Aug. 27, 1950, in Nevada. They moved to the Northwood area in 1951, farming east of Northwood.

Mickey was an avid farmer, snowmobiler, boater and golfer. He enjoyed playing pool while wintering in Texas.

He was a member of the Northwood United Methodist Church, was past president of the Farm Bureau, and a member of the Odd Fellows and the Northwood Country Club.

Mickey enjoyed his grandchildren, going to their events and being supportive of their activities.

Mickey was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Linda.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine, of Northwood; two sons, Steve (Kathy) Arnold, of Northwood, and Brian (Tami) Arnold, of Garner; two daughters, LeaAnn Hauge of Jacksonville, Fla., and Sue (Jim) Hale of Pleasant Hill; one son-in-law, Larry Hauge, of Northwood; nine grandchildren, Melissa, Chris and Brandon Hauge, Ryan and Derek Hale, Madison and Sam Arnold, Adrian and Luren Arnold; two great-grandchildren, Cydney Hauge and Harper Hyde; two sisters, Cenith Carlson of Minneapolis, Minn., and Berva Mills of Boone.

DR. GEORGE FISCHER, DVM

MANKATO, Minn. — Dr. George Fisher, DVM, 78, of Mankato and formerly of Rockwell, died Wednesday (July 9, 2003) at Immanuel St. Joseph Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church of Mankato with the Rev. Dawn Carder officiating. Private family burial is at Holberg Cemetery in Rapidan.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Landkamer-Johnson-Boman Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.

ROGER D. VER HELST

CEDAR RAPIDS — Roger D. Ver Helst, 73, of 626 Third St. S.E., died on Sunday (July 6, 2003) at his home following a sudden illness.

Funeral liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at All Saints Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids by the Rev. David O’Connor.

Papich-Kuba Funeral Service, 1228 Second St. S.E. in Cedar Rapids, is serving the family.

Roger is survived by his wife, Rosemary; five daughters, Lynn Ver Helst, of Stoughton, Wis., Jean Rice, of St. Louis Park, Minn., Mary Hoadley, of Garner, Jill Scholl, of Rudd, and Sally Ver Helst, of San Diego, Calif.; one son, Allen Ver Helst, of Bloomington, Minn.; three step-daughters, Rene Hanlon, of Anamosa, Lynn O’Donnell, of Cedar Rapids, and Kim Sitarski, of Fremont, Neb.; two sisters, Doris Lubbert, of Decorah, and Joyce Baldwin, of Raleigh, Ill.; two brothers, Dr. James Ver Helst, of Black Hawk, S.D., and William Ver Helst, of Nora Springs, and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Roger was born Dec. 28, 1929, in Mason City, the son of Henry and Clara (Jansen) Ver Helst.

He was employed as a mail carrier and later a supervisor at the Mason City Post Office until his retirement.

He moved to Cedar Rapids from Mason City five years ago.

He was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church.

E. J. ‘MORT’ MORTON

COULTER — E. J. “Mort” Morton, of Coulter, passed away peacefully on Thursday (July 10, 2003) at the Hampton Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Coulter with Pastor Mary Peterson and Pastor Dick Parker officiating.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton and one hour prior to services at the Nazareth Lutheran Church.

Edward Jr. Morton was born July 2, 1928, near Coulter to Myrtle and Ed Morton. He was baptized and confirmed in the Nazareth Lutheran Church.

E.J. was a small child when his parents moved to Belmond. Some years later, he and his family moved back to Coulter, where he lived all his life.

Mort attended the Coulter School and graduated from the Franklin Consolidated School of Latimer in 1946. He sang in the choir and the boys quartet. He participated in all sports. He also was very active in the Boy Scouts.

On April 19, 1947, he married E. Jeane Campbell in Coulter. To this union, eight children were born.

He worked at various pursuits as time progressed. He took training to become a salesman and technician for both the Surge and Chore Boy Milkers.

He started his business in 1957 with a $50 paycheck. His brother-in-law signed a note, and with the help of a trusting banker, he was in business.

In 1958, he founded Mort’s Pump and Plumbing Company. It expanded rapidly and has included all family members at times as well as outside help. They gave 24 hour service for emergency situations.

His roster of achievements was many. He served two terms on the Coulter City Council and was the mayor of Coulter for two terms.

In 1980, he chaired the Senate review committee for the Iowa Water Well Association in Des Moines.

In 1984, he was awarded the “Ber Zander” award — the highest and most prestigious award given by the Iowa Water Well Industry. He was also one of the five original trustees of the Hampton Neighborhood Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jeane; one daughter, Priscilla Morton Eddy and husband, Joel, of Latimer; and six sons, Kent and Chris Morton, of Latimer, Robert and Jan Morton, of Iowa Falls, Reginald and Jane Morton, of Hampton, Seth Morton, of Coulter, Jason and Teresa Morton, of Iowa Falls, Tracy Morton and Norma Allen, of Coulter; daughter-in-law, Jerri Jean Morton, of California; and 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by one brother, Sanford Morton, of Coulter, and four sisters, Peggy (Mac) Guldberg, of Coulter, Dixie (David) Jurgens, of Marion, Marlene (Herb) Wheeler, of Hubbard, and Amelia Tate, of Illinois.

He was preceded in death by one son, Lance; one brother, Dallas, and his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials directed to Hospice of North Iowa or to the E.J. Morton Memorial Fund which will be given to area churches.

MASON CITY - Donald R. Schlie, 75, of 695 13th St. S.E., died Thursday (July 10, 2003) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Donald was born Feb. 18, 1928, the son of Ernie and Verna (Heggstead) Schlie, in Northwood. While Don was still a young boy, the family moved to Mason City. He attended Mason City public schools.

Following graduation, Donald enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was inducted on Nov. 1, 1946, and honorably discharged on Oct. 31, 1949. During his tour of duty he attained the rank of corporal. Donald returned home and later attended Hamilton Business College.

On Jan. 18, 1958, Don was united in marriage to Shirley Loeckle. To this union, three children were born.

Donald's number one aspiration was enjoying and loving his family. His grandchildren were the apples of his eye. Don's favorite pastime, however, was working. He couldn't get enough and was always ready to continue. He owned and operated Don's APCO Service Station on South Federal Avenue for 18 years and later worked for 16 years, until his retirement, at Alexander Manufacturing in Mason City. In his later years, he looked forward to the short get-away trips with his wife, Shirley.

Donald was a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1328 of Mason City, and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Those thankful for having shared in Donald's life include his wife, Shirley; mother, Verna Schlie, of Mason City; three children, Randy Schlie, of Des Moines, Rickie Schlie, of Mason City, and Lisa Durham and her husband, Matt, of O'Fallon, Mo.; one sister, Delores Railsback, of Mason City, and six grandchildren.

Mr. Schlie was preceded in death by his father, Ernie Schlie.

Voral, the daughter of Elmer and Alma McNutt Kienenberger, was born Oct. 18, 1919, near Goodell. She grew up in the Goodell area where she attended school. She graduated from Goodell High School in 1937.

Voral was united in marriage with Francis Finn in October 1937. The couple made their home in Goodell. Francis passed away in May of 1944. On Feb. 20, 1946, she was united in marriage with Vern Schluter and they made their home in Meservey. To this union, five daughters were born.

In 1961, Vern and Voral moved to Goodell and in 1985 moved to the Belmond Apartments. Vern preceded Voral in April of 1997.

Voral was united in marriage with Herbert Basener on July 10, 1998. The couple lived in Belmond until 2001 when they moved to Clarion.

Voral was an active member of the Goodell United Methodist Church, where for many years she played the piano for Sunday School and church and led Bible studies and youth fellowship.

Voral was also a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Clarion. She was active as a 4-H leader and enjoyed crochet, latch work and using the computer.

Voral is survived by her husband, Herb; three daughters, Sheryl and husband, Dan Hanna, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Sandy and husband, Glenn Hansen, of Rowan, Iowa, and Sueanne and husband, Gary French, of Ackley; seven grandchildren, Kelli and husband, Jim, Derek, Kerri, Greg, Jennifer, Lindsay and Ashley; four great-granchildren, Haley, Jimmie, Brandon and Paityn; other children, Evelyn and husband, Tom Daily, of Greene, Velma and husband, Al Durbin, of Lohman, Mo., Nancy and husband, Martin Kroeze, of Sedalia, Mo., Lawrence and wife, Wanda Basener, of Belmond, David and wife, Donna Basener, of Meservey; 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren

MASON CITY - Ilona Paulsen, 92, of 302 Second St S.E., died Friday (July 11, 2003) at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, and one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church. A Rebekah Lodge service will be at held at 7 p.m. Monday.

The family suggests memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Ilona was born on June 1, 1911, at Lincoln, Tama County, Iowa, to Jacob F. and Marie (Guther) Maassen. When she was 5 years old, the family moved to a farm northwest of Mason City. She attended Mason No. 8 Country School and Mason City High School. After graduation, she enrolled at the Waterloo School of Beauty Culture in Waterloo and graduated in 1935. She operated Peaslee's Beauty Salon in Mason City for five years.

On June 30, 1940, she was united in marriage to Laurence F. Paulsen. They lived on the family farm southwest of Mason City. As she raised her children, she spent many hours gardening, raising capons and helping with the farm work as well as decorating many wedding cakes and special occasion cakes for customers in North Iowa.

After her husband passed on, she worked at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital as a nurse's aide until her retirement in 1976. In 1995 she moved to town and resided at 422 28th St. S.W. until February of 2002, when she became a resident of Good Shepherd Health Center.

One of Ilona's greatest gifts was her dedication to her church. She taught Sunday School for the primary grades until she reached her 80th birthday. She delighted in the little ones and taught three generations of children in a number of families. Most of her students still remember the sugar Easter eggs that she painstakingly decorated as a gift for each of them. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Esther Circle, Helping Hands, WELCA, the Mason City Garden Club and Queen Rebekah Lodge 106.

She is survived by a son, Gary Paulsen and his wife, Sandra; a daughter, Janet Paulsen-Carlson; a daughter-in-law, Mary Paulsen, all of Mason City; two grandsons, Stephen Paulsen and his wife, Teresa, of Waterloo, and Brian Paulsen, of Mason City; two granddaughters, Stephannie Paulsen-Cangir and her husband, Can, of New York, N.Y., and Jennifer Senne and her husband, Travis, of Reserve, La.; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Ann McKeehan, of Hacienda Heights, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Helen Maassen, of Mason City, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Marie Maassen; husband Laurence; son, John L. Paulsen; son-in-law, Albert Carlson; three brothers, Hans, Walter and Ernest Maassen; and three sisters, Bertha Beenken, Geneva Loynachan and Irma Sharratt.

MASON CITY - Charles "Charley" Robert Clapsaddle, 68, of 636 S. Polk Place, Mason City, died Saturday (July 12, 2003) from lung cancer, with his family at his side at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with a public scripture wake service at 6 p.m. followed by family comments and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 p.m.

Charley's family has re-quested that memorial contributions be made to Newman High School for tuition assistance in his memory.

Charley was born on Aug. 1, 1934, in Spencer, the son of Robert J. and Agnes (Dillon) Clapsaddle. He graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in 1952, and also at-tended Mason City Junior College, St. John's University in St. Cloud, Minn., and Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls.

Charley worked as a financial officer for GMAC, various car dealerships in North Iowa, and assisted in transportation at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. He continued with his involvement as a volunteer for Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

He was united in marriage to Connie Rodewald on Oct. 24, 1959, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City, and to this union was born David, Steven, Jim, Kathy and Jeanne. He was later united in marriage to Kathleen Ehrhardt Dillon on April 27, 1994, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.

He enjoyed all sports, especially baseball, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.

He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the River City Softball Hall of Fame in Mason City.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Lt. Col. Jim Clapsaddle and his wife, Maj. Andra Clapsaddle, both of the United States Air Force stationed in Washington, D.C.; Kathy Isaacson and her husband, Ward, of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; Jeanne Clapsaddle, of Iowa Falls; a daughter-in-law, Karen Wacha, of Texarkana, Texas; four grandchildren, Charles Steven Clapsaddle, of Texarkana, Texas, Nolan and Dillon Isaacson, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Samantha Clapsaddle,of Iowa Falls; a sister, Betty Lou Lapointe and her husband, Francis, of Mason City; Connie Clapsaddle, of Mason City, and Kathleen Dillon, of Florida; nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Steven and David Clapsaddle, and a nephew, Bob Lapointe.

Charley will also be remem-bered by his numerous friends, many of whom he has loved since childhood and all of whom he deeply valued until his final day.

MASON CITY - J.C. Lowe, 80, of 313 29th St. S.W., Mason City, died Sunday (July 13, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Joel Dahllen officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Columbarium, Highway 122 West, Mason City, with military honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the chapel.

The family of J.C. Lowe has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in lieu of flowers. The family has also requested that casual attire be worn for the service.

J.C. Lowe was born on April 18, 1923, in Manly, the son of Charles and Cleo (Amsbaugh) Lowe. He attended school in Estherville and Mason City public schools. After his schooling, he helped his family on the family farm in Estherville.

He was inducted into the U.S. Navy on Dec. 30, 1941, serving in the Pacific theater in the Philippines, Guam, Saipan and Okinawa until his honorable discharge on Aug. 23, 1945.

He was united in marriage to Betty Ann Olson on Jan. 18, 1946, in Hampton.

J.C. worked for Stoddard Manufacturing, Andrews Ready Mix from 1949 to 1966, as an equipment operator, A&M Pre Stress and also worked for the Cerro Gordo County Road Department for 22 years until his retirement in 1988. After his retirement, he worked for Thomas Electric in Mason City.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, helping people, remodeling houses, working on cars and traveling, but his great love and enjoyment was being with family and friends.

He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, River City Roamers camping club, Wigwam 'N' Wagon and volunteered at the Mason City Community Kitchen for several years.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Betty Ann Lowe, of Mason City; a son, Michael J. Lowe Sr. and Jacki Lowe, of Mason City; two daughters, Becki Wetter and her husband, Mike, of Mason City, and Peggy Lee and her husband, Bob, of Lafayette, La.; eight grandchildren, Mick Lowe and his wife, Andra, Mark Lowe and his wife, Staci, Michelle Lowe and friend, Jeff, Nathan Wetter and friend, Katie, Brett and Stephanie Wetter, Alan Lee and friend, Brooke, William Lee and friend, Kristen, and Brittany Lee; nine great-grandchildren, Nicole, Abby, Jade, Courtney, Hannah, Jonathan, Devin, Autumn and Aspen; a brother, Charles Lowe, of Clear Lake; three sisters, Verna Angel and her husband, Jesse, of Mason City, and Frieda Rezab and her husband, Norman, of Plymouth, and Gladys Whitehurst of the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center, as well as other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Roland, Harley and Donald Lowe; and two sisters, Delma Huntley and Thelma Bailey.

GARNER - Mary T. Rockwood, 94, of Garner, died Saturday (July 12, 2003) at Concord Care Center, Garner.

Mary Teresa Rockwood, the daughter of Frank and Teresa (Doughan) Mullin, was born April 22, 1909, at Hutchins. She graduated from Britt High School in 1925 and the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1927. She continued her education in teaching at Froebels Primary Education College in Chicago, Ill., Wartburg College, Iowa State University, University of Iowa and State College of Iowa.

In 1939, she was married to Harvey Rockwood in Britt. Mary taught school in Iowa for 40 years in the following communities: Hutchins, Pocahontas, Clear Lake, Garner and Waterloo. She retired from teaching in 1975 and moved to Whittemore. In 1990, she moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.

Mary is survived by a son, Richard Rockwood, of Meridian, Ind.; 10 grandchildren, Daniel Rockwood and his wife, Sharon and their two children, Cassie and Tiffany, of Menomonie, Wis., Catherine Hilbert and her husband, Guy, and their children, Callie and Dana, of Barron, Wis., Christine Silva and her husband, Henry, and their three children, Mariah, Polo and Christopher, of Deltona, Fla., Curtis Rockwood and his wife, Marie, and their four children, Samantha, Megan, Owen and Erin, of Boise, Ind., Jennifer Schofield and her husband, Edward, and their children, Taylor and Jacob, of Chetek, Wis., Travis Rockwood of Boise, Ind., Melodee Hoffner and her husband, Todd, and their daughter, Kiaya, of Eau Claire, Wis., Elizabeth Rockwood and her son, Devon, of Orland, Fla., Sarah Rockwood of Minneapolis, Minn. and Melinda Rockwood of Stevens Point, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Coletta Mullin of Whittemore; two nieces, Linda Schisel and her husband, Larry, of Garner, and Judy Haefner and her husband, Denny, of Cedar Rapids, and several other nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Eldon G. Law, 76, of 304 Third St. N.E., died Saturday (July 12, 2003) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Eldon was born Dec. 29, 1926, in Mason City, the son of James G. Law and Vera (Vawter) Law Kluseman. He grew up in Lincoln Township, rural Clear Lake.

Following school, he entered the United States Navy, serving in the South Pacific during WWII.

Eldon lived in Florida and in Chicago, working at various jobs. In 1998, he moved to Mason City.

He is survived by his son James E. Law, of Romeoville, Ill.; brother, James R. Law and his wife, Ruth, of Clear Lake; sister, Charlotte Saliger and her husband, Don, of Folsom, Calif.; eight nephews; one niece, and a special friend, Beth Ward, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; half-brother, Dale Kluseman; half-sister, Sondra Hamlin, and one son, Wayne Law.

WATERLOO - Gloria L. Annis, 79, of Waterloo, died of cancer Saturday (July 12, 2003) at the Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo.

Gloria was born June 7, 1924, in Waterloo, the daughter of D.M. and Verna M. (Steely) Swinehart. She married Norris Sam Annis on June 17, 1947, in Waterloo. Norris died Aug. 23, 1998.

Mrs. Annis graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1942 and from Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo., in 1945. She worked at the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier.

She is survived by two sons, N.S. "Hap" (Cammie) Annis, of Waterloo, and David Mitchell Annis, of Des Moines; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and one brother, Jack (Barbara) Swinehart, of Waterloo.

Laura E. Mannetter Henry was born June 24, 1905, at Hubbard, the daughter of Carl and Mary (Bekemeier) Mannetter. She graduated from Hubbard High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa. Laura taught school at Floyd for several years.

On June 24, 1938, she was united in marriage to Wilbur "Bill" Henry at Osage. They farmed near Charles City all their lives, remained on the farm after retirement and then moved together to the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in March of 2002. "Bill" died on Feb. 22, 2003. She enjoyed working in her vegetable and flower gardens, baking bread and reading.

Living family members include a son, Bruce Henry and special friend, Colleen, of Westminster, Colo.; a grandson, David (Denise) Bledsoe and daughter, Katelyn, of Charles City, and a brother, A.E. "Dutch" (Barbara) Mannetter of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Marlys Bledsoe, in 1963, and four brothers and five sisters.

Kathy was born Jan. 25, 1955, in Albert Lea, Minn., the daughter of Floyd and Elinor (Strouf) Dahlke.

She was baptized on March 17, 1957, at the Grand Meadow Lutheran Church by the Rev. Eugene V. Holland. She was confirmed on May 24, 1981, at First Lutheran Church by the Rev. Stephen Engelstad, where she was a lifelong member.

Kathy attended school in Osage and worked at a work shelter in Charles City and Elma.

She loved her family and friends very much and had a sweet smile for everyone, especially babies.

She found enjoyment in simple pleasures, making a cup of coffee for company, listening to old time music, watching the Dukes of Hazzard, eating ice cream, and shopping for others in the J C. Penney Catalog.

She was a special child of God and we will miss her.

Kathy was preceded in death by her father, Floyd Dahlke.

MASON CITY — Ilona Paulsen, 92, of 302 Second St S.E., died Friday (July 11, 2003) at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.

Ilona was born on June 1, 1911, at Lincoln, Tama County, Iowa to Jacob F. and Marie (Guther) Maassen. When she was 5 years old the family moved to a farm northwest of Mason City. She attended Mason No. 8 country school and Mason City High School.

After graduation she enrolled at the Waterloo School of Beauty Culture and graduated in 1935. She operated Peaslee’s Beauty Salon in Mason City for five years.

On June 30, 1940, she was united in marriage to Laurence F. Paulsen. They lived on the family farm southwest of Mason City. As she raised her children, she spent many hours gardening, raising capons, and helping with the farm work as well as decorating many wedding cakes and special occasions cakes for customers in North Iowa.

After her husband passed on, she worked at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital as a nurse’s aide until her retirement in 1976. In 1995 she moved to town and resided at 422 28th St. S.W. until February of 2002, when she became a resident of Good Shepherd Health Center.

One of Ilona’s greatest gifts was her dedication to her church. She taught Sunday School for the primary grades until she reached her 80th birthday. She delighted in the little ones and taught three generations of children in a number of families. Most of her students still remember the sugar Easter eggs that she painstakingly decorated as a gift for each of them.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Esther Circle, Helping Hands, WELCA, the Mason City Garden Club, and Queen Rebekah Lodge #106.

She is survived by a son, Gary Paulsen and his wife, Sandra; a daughter, Janet Paulsen-Carlson; a daughter-in-law, Mary Paulsen, all of Mason City; two grandsons, Stephen Paulsen and his wife, Teresa, of Waterloo, and Brian Paulsen, of Mason City; two granddaughters, Stephannie Paulsen-Cangir and her husband, Can, of New York, N.Y, and Jennifer Senne and her husband, Travis, of Reserve, La.; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Ann McKeehan, of Hacienda Heights, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Helen Maassen, of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Marlene was born on Sept. 9, 1935, in Zearing, Iowa, the daughter of Allen and Belva (Liittschwager) Guthrie. She graduated from Ames High School in 1953 and was united in marriage to Fritz E. Thoerner on June 16, 1956, at the First Methodist Church in Ames.

After living in Muscatine for the first 10 years of their marriage, the couple moved to Mason City in 1966.

Marlene obtained an associate of arts degree from the North Iowa Area Community College.

She held various positions including executive secretary, receptionist, and medical secretary.

She was a longtime member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mason City’s Monday Study Club, and the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Marlene enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, camping, and especially visiting with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Fritz Thoerner, of Mason City; son, Eric Thoerner and wife, Beth, of Minneapolis, Minn.; daughter, Linda Steele and husband, Dan, of Muscatine; grandchildren, Emma and Guthrie Thoerner, of Minneapolis, Minn., Haley, Moriah and Brooke Steele, of Muscatine.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

GRANT DAVID WRIGHT

SPRINGFIELD, Va. — Grant David Wright, 65, of Springfield, Va., died on Sunday (July 13, 2003) at the Inova Fairfax Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; three sons and wives, David and Felicia, Brian and Emily, and Matthew and Susan; four granddaughters, Michaela, Gail, Linden and Cailin; and a brother, James A. Wright.

Mr. Wright was a 1955 graduate of Clear Lake High School in Clear Lake, Iowa. He was educated at United States Naval Academy, Naval Post Graduate School and he earned his MBA at Virginia Tech.

He served in the United States Marine Corps as an attack pilot and served in the Vietnam War where he received the distinguished Flying Cross with Gold Star and Air Medal 5th Award.

He later worked for private industry and as a civilian for the U.S. Navy. He retired in 1997 as business manager for the Naval Warfare Center.

A Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Sydenstricker United Methodist Church, 8508 Hooes Rd. Springfield, VA 22153.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Sydenstricker United Methodist Church.

Bill joined the U.S. Navy in April of 1942, and served with the Sixth Seabee Construction Battalion as an Electricians Mate. He saw much combat action throughout the South Pacific. Bill was very proud of his service in the Navy, and of the fact that five of his brothers were also war veterans. He received an Honorable Discharge in October of 1945.

On Jan. 15, 1947, Bill was united in marriage to (Doris) Jean Ryan of Rowan/Dows. To this union three children were born: Ricky William, Veloice Sue, and Todd Elliot.

Bill worked for Central Telephone Company as a lineman until 1953. He then worked for Elliott Hardware and Appliance as a salesman and repairman.

In 1963, Bill was appointed Postmaster of the Belmond Post Office. He served in that position until his retirement in January of 1985.

After Bill’s retirement, he thoroughly enjoyed trips that he and Jean took, the most recent being last May to California. They made a number of trips so they could spend time with Veloice and her family in Ohio, California and Minnesota.

Bill also went on many goose and pheasant hunts with Todd, brother Dale, and nephew Tim, and enjoyed the spring turkey hunting camps in Northeast Iowa.

He loved to visit and be with his children and grandchildren.

Bill was a member of the United Methodist Church, serving at various times on the Admistrative Council, Trustees and Finance Committees. He was a member of the Belmond V.F.W. Post 4244.

Bill was preceded in death by his 8-year-old son, Ricky; his parents; four brothers, Clayton, Charles, Gerald, and Lawrence; and three sisters, Helen Busick, Lois Hansen, and June Hansen.

Bill is survived by his wife, Jean, of 56 years; daughter, Veloice Huck and her husband, Peter, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; son, Todd and his wife, Ann, of Forest City; grandchildren, Megan, Emily, and Kayla Huck, and Trent and Jane Walrod; brothers, Douglas and Dale and his wife Nadine; sisters-in-law, Anita Walrod and Dorothy Walrod; and many nieces and nephews.
