LAKE MILLS — Pastor Irving S. Tweeten, 93, of Lake Mills, formerly of Frost, Minn., died Saturday (April 19, 2003) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, at United Lutheran Church in Frost, Minn., with Pastor Edward Nieman and Pastor Patricia Hinkie officiating. Burial will take place at the United Lutheran Cemetery in Frost.

CARL EMIL ARTHUR ABRAHAMS            Published April 22, 2003

OWATONNA, Minn. — Carl Emil Arthur Abrahams, 84, of Owatonna, Minn., died Sunday (April 20, 2003) at Infinia at Owatonna.

He was born Aug. 27, 1918, in Taylor, N. D., the son of John and Elisa (Reins) Abrahams.

In 1935 at the age of 18, he began work for the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years, after which he returned to the Owatonna area and worked for Hormel Meat. He then worked as a farm hand in the Owatonna, Brownsdale and Austin areas.

On March 7, 1945, Carl married Dorene Behne at St. John Lutheran Church in Owatonna.

After working as a farm hand, he purchased equipment and did feed grinding for local farmers. He then worked for OTC for five years until his retirement in 1983.

Carl enjoyed playing cards and shooting pool. He loved the outdoors and went on the “Frog Run” fishing trip at Lake Miltona every year in the fall.

In his later years, he enjoyed having coffee each morning at HyVee. His wife Dorene passed away on July 10, 1998.

Survivors include Diane and Stan Harrison (Daughter) of Clear Lake; Dale and Mary Abrahams (son) of Owatonna, Minn.; Dennis and Dianne Abrahams (son) of Houston, Texas; Carol and Chuck Hallanger (daughter) of Peoria, Ariz.; Darrell Abrahams (son) of Owatonna, Minn.; and Cindy and Larry Bruce (daughter) of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and Dorothy Strong (sister) of Belgrade, Mont.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorene; his parents, John and Elisa Abrahams; one infant son, seven brothers, and seven sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John Kallio of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Owatonna Memorial Gardens in Owatonna.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Michaelson Funeral Home, 1930 Austin Road in Owatonna and one hour prior to the service at church.

CLEAR LAKE — Mildred A. Baker, 95, died Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jan Burnett, officiating. The interment was held on February 3, 2003 in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Memorials can be given to the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake or to a charity of your choice in memory of Mildred.

DONALD M. CLEVELAND

BELMOND — Donald M. Cleveland, 66, of Belmond, passed away Sunday (April 20, 2003) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.

Funeral services for Donald M. Cleveland will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Belmond with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick Lane S. in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to Belmond-Klemme Scholarship II, Belmond Medical Center Foundation, American Cancer Society, and the Belmond United Methodist Church.

Donald Max Cleveland, the son of James Arthur Cleveland and Alice Marie Dunn, was born June 19, 1936, at home on the family farm near Liberty Center, Iowa.

He grew up on the farm, graduated from Liberty Center High School in 1954 and attended Simpson College where he played basketball and high-jumped. He graduated in 1961.

He went on to earn a master’s degree in guidance counseling from Northeast Missouri State University and his endorsement specialist in school administration from Iowa State University.

Don was united in marriage to Dona Griffiths on June 10, 1962, in Indianola, Iowa.

His first teaching job was at Franklin Consolidated Schools (now called CAL) where he taught junior high science.

The couple moved to Belmond in 1965 where Don was employed by the Belmond Community Schools. From 1965-1968 he taught junior high science.

His coaching duties included junior high wrestling and high school track and field.

From 1968-1974 he was the high school guidance counselor. He started the girls basketball program, serving as head coach. He was also the boys head baseball coach, leading the team to the state baseball tournament. During those summers he ran the summer T-Ball and PeeWee baseball leagues.

From 1974-1991, Don was high school principal. He implemented the staff improvement program, student assistance program and was facilitator for other communities.

In 1990, he was elected Outstanding Administrator for support of Music Education by the Iowa Music Educator Association. He was a member of the State Music Association Board.

From 1991-1996 Don was superintendent of the Belmond schools and was instrumental in the Belmond-Klemme reorganization.

In 1994, Don was awarded the School Administrator Award from IHSAA. In 1996, he was awarded Boss of the Year by the Belmond Jaycees.

Common advice that Don gave was, ‘‘set your goals, do the best you know how, don’t be afraid to try and be happy doing what you are doing. ’’

Don was a member of the United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school for many years and was a member of various boards.

He was a member of the Belmond Chamber of Commerce where he was a past president, the Belmond Hospital Foundation and Belmond Public Library Foundation.

Don was also a member of the Belmond Volunteer Ambulance crew until he became superintendent and was unable to take calls. He always hoped to return to that service.

Don loved the outdoors. He had taken many youth groups, friends and family to the Boundary Waters on canoe trips. He enjoyed fishing and loved nature.

Don is survived by his wife, Dona, of Belmond; three sons, Dan and his wife, Jodie, of Wheaton, Ill., Dave and his wife, Tara, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Dana and his wife, Laurie, of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Alex, Sean, Kellen, Conner, Langley, and Maxwell; two sisters, Phyllis Gray and her husband, George, of Waukee, Iowa, and Coleen Remick, of Indianola; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and Charles; and two sisters, Norma and Sharon.

MASON CITY — Ruth G. Gray, 84, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Sunday (April 20, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill and Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. with a Scriptural wake service at 6 p.m. followed with a rosary at 6:30 p.m.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Holy Family Catholic Church in lieu of flowers.

Ruth was born Sept. 4, 1918, in Belmond, Iowa, to Jack and Luella (Parker) Finn. She grew up and attended school in Belmond, graduating from the Belmond High School.

On Sept. 18, 1937, Ruth was united in marriage to Harold C. Gray in Belmond. A short time later they moved to Mason City where she spent the rest of her life.

Ruth was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

She devoted her life to her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to be called great granny.

Ruth is survived by two sons, Larry Gray and his wife, Donna, of Mason City, and Dennis Gray of Arlington, Texas; five grandchildren, Terri Kuntz and her husband, David, of Mason City, Tammy Hansen and her husband, Russ, of Cedar Falls, Kelli Thorton and her husband, Jim, of Arlington, Texas, Thomas Gray of Austin, Texas, and Stephi Gray of Fort Worth, Texas; eight great-grandchildren, Cassie, Nicole, and Lindsey Kuntz, Ryan and Tyler Hansen, and Paul, Chandler, and Alex Thorton.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold, in 1988; and two brothers, Leland and Donald Finn.

Ralph was born on Dec. 31, 1927, in Mason City, the son of Vaughn Clifford and Mae Condoce (Freed) Wallace.

He graduated from Mason City High School and served in the U.S. Army from May of 1946 receiving his honorable discharge in November of 1947.

He married Marilyn Jenzen on Dec. 15, 1962, in Mason City.

Ralph was employed at Dick’s Bowling Center and the Rose Bowl for many years. Following retirement, he worked as an attendant for the predecessor banks of Bank of America and Wells Fargo.

Ralph was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, participated in bowling leagues and enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of Mason City; a brother, Jack Wallace and wife, Dorothy, of Winter Park, Fla.; brother-in-law, James Jenzen and his wife, Linda, of Springfield, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Arlene Fedell and husband, Jack, of Crystal Lake, Ill., and Lorraine Crannage of Belleville, Ill.; many special nieces and nephews.

CLEAR LAKE — Lyle Weir, 69, passed away on Saturday (April 19, 2003) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.

Lyle was born Nov. 25, 1934, to Charles and Venita (Adams) Weir. He graduated from Woden High School in 1953 and started working for the Woden Co-op Elevator.

He spent almost his entire life in the grain industry. He worked 25-plus years with the Geo. Rolfes Co. selling aeration and temperature control systems and most recently with J. Ham Inc.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959 and was stationed in Germany for 18 months.

Lyle’s hobbies were golf, golf and golf.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his son, Scott and wife, Julie, of Grafton; and his daughter, Ann, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren Johnathan, Alexandra and Lillie Joy; his sister, Janice; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

RUTH J. (MRS. HANS) HOLTAN

FOREST CITY — Ruth J. (Mrs. Hans) Holtan, 97, of Forest City, died Monday (April 21, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Ruth J. Hermanson Holtan was born on a farm near Lake Mills, on Feb. 14, 1906, the daughter of Ole and Juli-Ann (Ingebretson) Hermanson. She received her education near her home and graduated from Lake Mills High School.

She taught in the rural schools for five years, gaining wonderful memories of those years, and has stayed in contact with several students. Ruth reminded us often of walking to rural schools in the winter months and having her own grandparents nearby.

On June 1, 1930, Ruth and Hans O. Holtan were married at Winnebago Lutheran Church. They farmed for many years, retiring on their farm west of Forest City.

Ruth was an avid reader, enjoyed crocheting, sewing, gardening, and was active in a neighborhood coffee club.

She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Ruth was an avid encourager for her children and their families.

Annual family reunions were a delight for Ruth; she loved the company, the laughter and the food!

Recently Ruth fell and broke her hip. She was doing well after surgery but other complications inhibited recovery. She spent several days in Mercy Hospital and Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City before returning to her heavenly home on Monday (April 21, 2003) at the age of 97 years.

Ruth is survived by two daughters and their families, Karen Anderson and husband, Alan, of Braselton, Ga., and Mary Harland and husband, Thomas, of Forest City. Also surviving are six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Peterson Holtan of Tyler, Texas; and a sister, Leila Kloster, of Lake Mills.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Hans, on Dec. 4, 1973, and son, David Harlan on Oct. 11, 1994, and seven brothers and sisters.

CHARLES R. ‘BOB’ LENNAN

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Charles R. “Bob” Lennan, of Phoenix entered into rest on Friday (April 18, 2003) at the age of 77.

Mr. Lennan served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He later retired as a salesman.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of nearly 45 years; children, Pam Chase, Robee Frank, Guy Lennan, Kandi Dutcher, Scott Lennan and Lori Pahls; brothers, John and Patrick Lennan; sister, Mary Lennan; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Lennan is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Leona Lennan, and daughter, Gae Karol Kenyon.

A memorial service will be be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Paradise Chapel Funeral Home, 3934 E. Indian School Road in Phoenix.

ELIZABETH M. ‘BETTY’ MESSIER

ROCKFORD — Elizabeth M. “Betty” Messier, 80, of Rockford, died Sunday (April 20, 2003) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, 21 Third St. N.W. in Rockford.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the services.

She was born on Nov. 26, 1922, in Waterloo, Iowa. Her parents, Mary Ann Mcllvennie and Samuel Nimick, were born in Ireland and came to this country when they were very young. Her father died when she was only 7 months old.

She lived in Rockford all her life, graduating from Rockford High School in 1940. She was baptized and confirmed in the First United Methodist Church in Rockford, of which she was a member for 66 years.

Elizabeth wed Richard F. Messier on Dec. 31, 1940, and to this union three sons were born, Dennis, Kirk and Bryce. During World War II she followed her husband around the country, working at various jobs. While he was in boot camp in San Diego, she was a riveter on the big B-52 bombers.

After the war they returned to Rockford to live. She worked as secretary for the Rockford Cemetery Association for five years.

She was nominated to serve on the committee to try and procure a doctor for the town. Dr. Russell Barrett came to Rockford and in 1967-68 the medical clinic was built. She was asked by the doctor to help prepare the building and staff it for opening in July 1968. She worked as the office manager for 17 years, having to discontinue after an accident to her legs.

She was active in her church, circle, UM Women, Royal Neighbors, Women’s Club and American Legion Auxiliary. She held various offices in all of the above over the years and was a 50-year member of Royal Neighbors of America.

She arranged flowers in church for many years, which was a job she loved, and sang in church choir for more than 25 years.

She loved to bake (cookies were her specialty), send greeting cards and go dancing. She was always willing to and wanting to help anyone she could.

Survivors include her husband, Richard; two sons, Kirk of Iowa City and Bryce of Phoenix, Ariz.; and three wonderful daughters-in-law, Joy of Tucson, Ariz., Karen of Iowa City, and Sharon of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Justin (Pete) Preston, Christian (Tammy), Deanna, Alecia and Jason; two great-grandchildren, Erica and Samuel Preston; and a special niece, Carol Alexandres of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Dennis; stepfather, John Rath; and three half brothers.

ST. ANSGAR — Jerry M. Jordahl, 67, of St. Ansgar, died Tuesday (April 22, 2003) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

GILES LEA MALLOW

OSAGE — Giles Lea Mallow, 78, died Wednesday (April 23. 2003) at his home in Osage, of cancer.

Giles was born May 14, 1924, to George and Fern Mallow in Kanawha. He graduated from Osage High School in 1942. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as an officer aboard an LST.

Giles was united in marriage to Imogene Love on June 14, 1946, in Osage.

He owned and operated Mallow & Sons GM dealership in Osage.

He was a life member of the American Legion. He was a member of the V.F.W. , where he went through the ranks of that group, serving as president and then served for many years as a Quartermaster.

He was an avid golfer.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Inurnment will be in the Osage Cemetery with a flag presentation by V.F.W. post 7920 and American Legion post 278.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Hospice of North Iowa.

MASON CITY — Gertrude S. Merkel, 89, of Mason City died Wednesday (April 23, 2003) at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Manly.

Funeral services for Gertrude will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Scott Duffus officiating. Interment will be in Grafton Cemetery in Grafton.

Gertrude was born April 13, 1914, the daughter of Otto H. and Alivia E. (Walk) Braun in rural Grafton, Iowa.

On Feb. 11, 1934, she was united in marriage to Arthur Merkel in Grafton, Iowa. Gertrude and Arthur resided in Grafton until 1945 when they came to Mason City.

Gertrude was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church. She was known for her sewing and quilting talent and enjoyed making prom dresses for family and friends.

She loved all her family and enjoyed spending time with them.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Arthur W. Merkel of Manly; daughters, Shirley Reiman and husband, Don, of Clarion, and Larisa Walk and husband, Robert Dahse, of Winona, Minn.; son, Russell J. Merkel and wife, Denyce, of Rogers, Ark.; three granddaughters, Paige Blair and husband, Mark, of Des Moines, Dawn Barragy and husband, Dan, of Clear Lake and Andrea Sheldon and husband, Thad, of Coralville; two great-grandchildren, Niko and Larissa Barragy; sisters, Dorothy Rodemaker of Manly, Evely Nelson of Lime Springs; brothers, Everett Braun of Grafton.

DUBUQUE — Mrs. Agnes Ann Critelli, 71, of 2590 St. Anne Drive, died on Monday (April 21, 2003) at her home.

Agnes was born on Oct. 24, 1931, in Salix, Iowa, the youngest of 13 children born to Claude Clement and Ona May (Kidder) Irish.

Agnes graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1950 and received her training as a registered nurse from NIACC in Mason City, in 1970.

She married Joseph Critelli on June 21, 1952, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Des Moines.

She was employed at Mercy Hospitals in Mason City and Dubuque from 1970 to 1995. Most recently she was the Pediatric Head Nurse at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, retiring in 1995.

She was a member of American Business Women’s Association.

She is survived by daughters, Christine (Scott) Nicolet of Round Rock, Texas, Joan Critelli of Unity, Wis. and Susan (Patrick) McTaggart of Dubuque; sons, James (Mary) Critelli of Rocklin, Calif., Timothy Critelli of San Jose, Calif., and Mark (Marilee) Critelli of Marshfield, Wis.; grandchildren, Brian Nicolet, Sarah Nicolet, Rachel Critelli, Sofie Critelli, Mikala Critelli, Emily Critelli, Ava Critelli, Claire Critelli, Abbey Mc- Taggart, Ryan McTaggart, Liam McTaggart, and Daniel McTaggart; sisters, Vivian Irish of Onawa, Fern McCall of Castana, Betty (Neil) Grimsley of Tomahawk, Wis., and Rosalie Torticill of Onawa; brother, Dick Irish of Castana; her former husband, Joseph Critelli, of Bella Vista, Ark.

JERRY JORDAHL

ST. ANSGAR — Jerry Jordahl, 67, of St. Ansgar, died Tuesday (April 22, 2003) at the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar with the Rev. Byron Northwick officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

Jerry was born March 5, 1936, in Rake, Iowa, to Joseph and Margaret (Olson) Jordahl. He graduated from St. Ansgar in 1954. He attended Waldorf College from 1954-1955. He served in the United States Army as a member of the 526th Field Artillery Missile Battalion at Fort Sill, Okla., from 1956-1958.

He married Gloria Hansen on June 9, 1956, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar.

Jerry worked in the furniture business for 36 years, most recently retiring from Dungey’s Furniture in Osage, where he served as store manager.

Jerry was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April of 2000. During the following three years, Jerry’s strength and will to survive touched many lives. He became a source of consultation and inspiration to others suffering from pancreatic cancer through-out the country. He was always willing to listen and offer encouragement to all he spoke with. He became active in the American Cancer Society and he, along with his wife, Gloria, were chosen as the honorary co-chairs for the Mitchell County Relay for Life in 2002.

Jerry was inducted into the St. Ansgar Booster Club Athletic Hall of Fame in April of 2002 for his outstanding athletic achievements.

Jerry enjoyed golf, gardening and working in his workshop. He loved traveling and especially enjoyed his Panama Canal cruise with friends and a trip to the East with Gloria.

His life was his family and he loved spending time with his four grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all his friends and family.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Joseph, and father-in-law, Lloyd Hansen.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Gloria; his children, Kari (David) Fomon of Coralville, and Erik Jordahl of Bettendorf; grandchildren, Josh and Kristin Fomon and Taylor and Nicholas Jordahl; mother, Margaret Jordahl; and mother-in-law, Wilma Hansen; brother-in-law, Richard (Helen) Hansen of La Habra, Calif., and his niece, Dana Schauster, and nephew, Mark Hansen.

BOULDER, Colo. — Doris E. Enabnit, 93, of Boulder, Colo., formerly of Ventura, Iowa, died Tuesday (April 22, 2003) in Boulder. She had lived in Boulder since 1993.

Doris was born on May 14, 1909, in Soldier, Iowa, to Gilbert and Bessie (Carritt) Britton.

She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received a B.A. at Drake University.

Doris was united in marriage to Harold Henry Enabnit on May 29, 1935, in Charles City, Iowa.

She was an elementary teacher at Marble Rock and Ventura, and was a librarian in Ventura.

She enjoyed playing bridge and gardening. She was a special and gracious lady.

She belonged to the Garden Club in Ventura.

She is survived by a daughter, Marlys Millhiser and her husband, David, of Boulder, Colo.; two grandchildren, Joy Ransom, of Broomfield, Colo., and Jay Millhiser, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and one nephew, Barrie Britton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, and a brother, Gerald Britton.
