CLAUDE B. ACKERMAN

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Claude B. Ackerman, 71, of Las Cruces, died at his home on March 18, 2003.

He was born Jan. 16, 1932 in Lone Rock, Iowa, the son of Jim and Dorothy Ackarman.

Claude was united in marriage to Charlotte Boehnke on June 5, 1954. To this union, one son, Scott D. Ackerman was born.

Left to cherish Claude’s memory are his loving wife, Charlotte, of Las Cruces, N.M.; one brother, Donald Ackarman and his wife, Delores, of Ventura, Iowa; one sister, Luella Barton and her husband, Bill, of Lilburn, Ga.; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Scott, his parents and one brother Larry Ackarman.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mission Lutheran Church, 2752 Roadrunner Parkway, Las Cruces, N,M.

At the request of the deceased, cremation has taken place at Graham Mortuary and Mesilla Valley Crematory.

Inurnment of cremains will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, Iowa at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Mission Lutheran Church at 2752 Roadrunner Parkway, Las Cruces, NM 88011.

THOMPSON — Edward Helgren, 45, of Thompson, died Monday (March 31, 2003) at the USA Healthcare in Mason City.

LYDIA L. LYONS

WINONA, Minn. — Memorial services for Lydia L. Lyons, 100, of Winona, Minn., and formerly of Elgin, Ill., Green Bay, Wis., and Mason City, Iowa, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church in Winona, Minn., with the Rev. Rick King officiating.

Lydia died on Dec. 17, 2002, at Lake Winona Manor in Winona, Minn.

She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis A. Marston, of Winona, Minn.; grandchildren, Lenore (Gary) Hegland, Denise Brewster (Bob Hemerick), Victoria (Tom) Schmidt, Lori (Jerome) Anderson, Douglas (Debra) Marston and Craig (Terri) Marston; great-grandchildren, Dawnyell, Lyon, Kristyn, Logan, Jacob, Josh, Joseph, Jonathon, James, Aaron, Kyle, Nicholas and Jessica; great-grandchildren, L.J., Devon, Charisse and Kierstyn.

Lydia was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Bruce H. Lyons; two brothers, Alexander and William Paton.

Her son-in-law, Dwight H. Marston, died on Feb. 20, 2003.

Interment of her cremains will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.

DWIGHT H. MARSTON

WINONA, Minn. — Dwight H. Marston, 74, of Winona, Minn., died on Feb. 20, 2003 in Mesa, Ariz.

Dwight was born on Nov. 6, 1928, in Postville, Iowa, to Euclid C. Marston and Marie Danner Marston.

On Aug. 12, 1950, he married Phyllis A. Lyons at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. He served in the United States Army from 1951-1953.

Dwight was a teacher and coach in secondary and higher education. He was the Director of Athletics at Winona State University for 25 years (1966-1991).

Dwight is survived by his wife, Phyllis Marston, of Winona, Minn.; two sons, Douglas (Debbie) Marston and Craig (Terri) Marston; three grandchildren, Kyle, Nicholas and Jessica Marston; two brothers, Joseph (Blanche) Marston and Craig Marston; two sisters, Jean (Al) Lopez and Virginia Douglas.

Dwight was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law, Lydia L. Lyons, on Dec. 17, 2003.

Memorial services for Dwight will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the First Congregational Church in Winona, Minn., with the Rev. Rick King, officiating. Interment of his cremains will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City, Iowa.

GARNER — Ethel Meyer, 89, of Garner, died Sunday (March 30, 2003) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Klemme, with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

DIANE K. MINOR

CLARION — Diane K. Minor, 55, of 1019 First St. S.W. in Clarion, passed away Sunday (March 30, 2003) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion with the Rev. Gary Boen officiating. Inurnment will be 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home 602 N. Main St. in Clarion.

Diane Kay (Hopkey) Minor was born on Nov. 4, 1947, in Belmond, the daughter of Ardell and Florence (Robertson) Hopkey. She lived on a farm north of Meservey until she was three, then the family moved to Belmond.

She was baptized in the United Methodist Church in Belmond where she was also confirmed. She attended Belmond Community Schools and graduated in 1966.

On Aug. 6, 1966, Diane was united in marriage to Marvin Lewis Minor at a candlelight wedding and reception at the United Methodist Church in Belmond.

The couple lived in Eagle Grove for five months, then moved to Muscatine, Iowa. While living in Muscatine they were blessed with three wonderful children, Annette, Michael, and Matthew. They were the joy of their lives.

After living in Muscatine for nine years, the family moved back to Clarion, where she enjoyed raising children. Diane lived in Clarion until her death.

She is survived by her wonderful husband, Marvin; wonderful daughter, Annette Kay, her husband Robert Ogborn, their children Ashlea, and Sean of Illinois; wonderful son, Michael Lee and his wife Jill, who is expecting a baby in August, of Pennsylvania; wonderful son, Matthew Lewis and his children, Mallorie, and Donovan of South Dakota.

Diane was preceded in death by her parents, Ardell and Florence Hopkey; and brothers Dallas, and Dennis.

She enjoyed her wonderful husband, who was her guardian angel here on earth and who took wonderful care of her through the 36 years of their marriage.

She was so blessed with her husband Marvin, children, Annette, Michael, Matthew, grandchildren Sean, Ashlea, Mallorie, and Donavan, son-in-law Robert, and daughter-in law Jill.

How much more can one be so blessed, she loved them all so much.

THELMA VIVIAN TRUHLAR

WESLEY — Thelma Vivian Truhlar, 90, of Wesley, died Tuesday (April 1, 2003) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith, with Pastor Ron Feuerhak officiating. Inurnment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Central City at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Wesley.

Thelma Vivian Truhlar was born on Dec. 12, 1912, at Salem, S.D. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Central City, Iowa, where she graduated from the Central High School in 1931.

After her schooling, Thelma worked as a housekeeper in Cedar Rapids.

Thelma was married to Clarence Tessman on Dec. 12, 1933, at Central City. The couple lived in Audubon, Iowa for a few years where they farmed. They moved to Ely, Iowa where Thelma was a homemaker.

In the mid-1960s, Thelma started working as a secretary to the middle school principal in Cedar Rapids. She worked there for 10 years and retired. Thelma then moved to Wesley, Iowa, to be near her family.

Thelma was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith, where she also belonged to the Miriam Circle. She was a member of the Charity Chapter of the Rebekah Lodge in Britt and the Older Iowa Legisture.

Thelma enjoyed reading, quilting, playing cards, especially bridge and doing all kinds of handiwork.

Thelma died on Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at the Westview Care Center in Britt where she had been a resident for a short time. She was 90.

Thelma is survived by her son, John Tessman and wife, Jean, of Garner; and her daughter, Joan Turner and her husband, Nelson, of Wesley; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Clarence Tessman and Raymond Truhlar; three sisters, Bessie Bishop, Esther Atherton and Mavis Stone; her brother, Freddie Fuller; her granddaughter, Terri Tessman Duncan; and two grandsons-in-law, Calvin Rummens and Paul Adams.

CHARLES CITY — Susie Monroe, 86, of 105 N. Cedar Terrace, Charles City, died Monday (March 31, 2003) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley Hayek, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, where the St. Jude Circle and Lay Carmelites will recite the Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and with a Vigil Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday an hour prior to the Mass at the church.

ETHEL M. MEYER

GARNER — Ethel M. Meyer, 89, of Garner, died Sunday (March 30, 2003) at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Klemme with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Ethel Mildred Meyer, the daughter of Arthur (A.J.) and Emma (Ludeke) Schoenwetter, was born May 10, 1913, in Des Moines. She attended and graduated from Klemme High School in 1932.

On March 21, 1933, she was married to Herman Meyer in Galena, Ill. They farmed west of Klemme all of their married life.

After Herman’s death in 1984, Ethel continued to live on the farm until 1994, when she moved to Garner.

Due to ill health she moved to Concord Care Center on June 17, 2002. She enjoyed her roommate, Dona Greiman, as well as all of the activities at Concord Care Center.

Herman and Ethel spent many winters in Texas. She also had traveled throughout the United States, including Alaska.

Her hobbies included crocheting, quilting, music and enjoying her grandchildren.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Klemme, U.M.W., the South Liberty Homemaker’s Club and the Klemme Senior Citizens.

She is survived by three children, Lorraine Buckley of Forest City, Herman (Richard) Meyer and his wife, Patricia, of Cedar Rapids and Jean Hansen and her husband, Dennis, of Whiteville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Meyer, on Sept. 15, 1984; a son, Alvin Meyer on April 14, 1990, a son-in-law, Billy Buckley on July 24, 1999; a granddaughter, Debbie Sue Meyer in 1963; and her parents.

CLEAR LAKE — Louis G. Hepperly, 87, of 624 18th St. W., Clear Lake, died Tuesday (April 1, 2003) at his farm north of Ventura.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ventura United Methodist Church, 10 S. Weimer in Ventura, with Pastor Audrey Westendorf-Young officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Louis G. Hepperly Memorial Fund.

Louis was born Oct. 16, 1915, southwest of Britt to George and Mary (Yarke) Hepperly. He was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Britt. Louis attended country schools and worked on various farms.

On April 21, 1934, he was united in marriage to Eleanor Wright at Mason City. They were married for 68 years. They rented a farm north of Britt for six years. They purchased a farm north of Ventura, where he farmed until retiring. They then moved to Clear Lake.

Farming was his pride and joy. He also liked gardening and yard work, and was always ready to help anyone.

He loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a member of the Ventura United Methodist Church.

Louis is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor Hepperly, of Clear Lake; one daughter, Marilyn Severson and her husband, Don, of Joice; one son, Jerry Hepperly and his wife, Nina, of Fertile; six grandchildren, Linda Rae Severson, Larry Severson and his wife Linda, Julie Rasmussen and her husband John, Scott Hepperly and his wife Robin, Todd Hepperly and his wife Julie, and Jon Hepperly; 10 great-grand-children, Tiffany and Marcus Severson, Brittany, Jenna and Tyler Rasmussen, Nicole, Joe and Ashley Hepperly and Justine and Megan Hepperly; one sister, Lola Mattoon, Ohio; several nieces and nephews, and many friends and neighbors.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Hepperly; two sisters, Stella Clark and Marietta Cockrell, and two brothers Ernest and Lyle.

Paul D. Francis was born Dec. 31, 1925 at Rockwell, a son of George W. and Winsome I. (Ezra) Francis.

He married Joanne R. Bower on May 16, 1949 at Mason City.

Paul attended Sacred Heart Catholic School at Rockwell. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Paul did carpentry and construction work all his life in the North Iowa area. He owned and operated Iowa Slate Company and Paul’s Window and Awning.

In later years he delivered motor homes for Winnebago Industries. Paul’s life centered around his family. He enjoyed playing bingo and was a former member of River City Barbershop Chorus.

Paul is survived by a son, Garth D. Francis, of Collinsville, Conn.; two daughters, Paula Garth and her husband, Mark, of Omaha, Neb.; Christine Whitten and her husband, Tom, of Simsbury, Conn.; two grandchildren, Paul and Katie Garth, of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Mary Henderson, of Emmetsburg; a brother, Don L. Francis and his wife, Hazel, of Deaver, Wyo.; three sisters-in-law, Delores Francis, of Rockwell; Joyce Miller Francis, of Mason City; Janet Francis, of Detroit, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne; brothers, George W. Francis, Arthur H. Francis, Virgil E. Francis, and Cecil J. Francis, and a sister, Waneta Mentor.

DOWS — Ted W. Wesenberg, 49, of Dows, died on Monday (March 31, 2003) at his home in Dows.

JOHN ANDREW AGNEW

CLEAR LAKE — John Howard Agnew, 88, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (April 3, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Galilean Lutheran Church, Hwy. 18 West in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jeff Ungs officiating. Interment will be held later the same day at the Coulter Cemetery in Coulter, where military honors will be conducted by the Hansen-Have American Legion Post No. 658 of Latimer.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and also for one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the church.

John was born May 30, 1914, in Palisade, Colo., the son of Gilbert and Jessie Mae (Box) Agnew. His father died when he was 4 years old. His family moved to Rowan, Iowa, then Wilmington, Del. and back to Rowan when John was in Second grade. He graduated from Rowan High School.

When John was young, his mother married Ray Azeltine, who was a good stepfather to John. Following high school, John attended radio school in California. John enlisted in the U. S. Army on April 20, 1941 in Hampton, and served as a General Service Engineer.

John married Della Johansen on Jan. 24, 1945 in Coulter. They farmed in Coulter until they retired and moved to Clear Lake in the spring of 1979.

John enjoyed several hobbies and “tinkering” in general. John and Della loved to dance, especially square dance.

He was a member of Galilean Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. John was previously a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church, Coulter, and of the Latimer American Legion.

John is survived by his wife, Della Agnew, of Clear Lake; one stepbrother, Richard Azeltine, of California; and stepsister, June Blow, of Wisconsin; three sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; step father, and one brother, Dean Agnew.

CHRIS HERUM

ANKENY — Chris Herum, 65, of Ankeny, formerly of Manly, died on Wednesday (April 2, 2003) at Mercy Hospital after a work accident at his business.

He was born in Mason City on Sept. 9, 1937, to Celina Herum Silverton-Boulting and Lew Silverton.

Chris graduated from Manly High School in 1955. He served four years in the U.S. Navy, and 32 months overseas.

Chris worked in Chicago, Ill., for the Rock Island Railroad and in construction. He married Shirley Thofson in October of 1960. They moved to Des Moines in 1963, where he was employed at the Eddy-Walker Equipment Co. and Mainline Equipment Co. In 1976 he started his own company, Chris LTD, and later started Engine Rebuilders Inc. in 1988, where he worked until his death.

Chris was a member of the Operating Engineer Local 234, the Des Moines Scottish Rite, ZA-GA-ZIG Shrine, IZAAK Walton League, Moose Lodge, Eagles and the Elks.

He loved being with his family and his friends, going on road trips on weekends. Chris lived life to the fullest. He will be deeply missed by his family and his many friends.

Chris is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Ankeny; two sons, Jerry Herum and his companion, Celeste Van Syoc, of Des Moines and Dan Herum and his wife, Wendy, of Indianola; four granddaughters, Jessica, Amanda, Amber and Crystal; and his mother, Celina Boulting, of Northwood.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lew Silverton, in 1958.

SUZANNE LORENE BALEK

PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. — Suzanne Lorene Balek, 56, died on Sunday (March 30, 2003) at Plattsmouth Hospital of health complications.

She was born in Omaha, Neb., and she spent most of her life in Mason City, Iowa, where she raised her three sons, Doug Balek, of Tennessee, Matt Balek, of North Carolina and Kyle Balek, of Mason City

She was a homemaker and a full time mom foremost.

She also attended NIACC and Hamilton Business College where she received a degree in accounting.

She enjoyed reading, music and anything trivial. Her hobby was collecting dolls.

As well as her three sons, survivors include her 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

CURTIS ERVIN KNUTSON

FOREST CITY — Curtis E. Knutson, 87, of Forest City, died Thursday (April 3, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the United Methodist Church in Forest City with the Rev. Gary Marzolf, officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Curtis E. Knutson was born on Feb. 8, 1916, near Fergus Falls, Minn., the son of Carl and Julia (Olson) Knudson. He lived several years in Emmetsburg.

On Sept. 3, 1939, he was married to Mary Helen Campbell in Emmetsburg. The couple had enjoyed 63 years of married life together.

Curtis served in the United States Army during World War II.

The couple made their home in Wells, Minn., for 18 years where Curtis worked with John Deere machinery.

Curtis later came to Forest City and began working for Winnebago Industries.

At the time of his retirement he began to put thousands of miles on his little Winnebago Motor Home. He enjoyed the fellowship in the campgrounds and seeing much of the U.S. and Canada.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the American Legion and was a lifetime member in the Disabled American Veterans.

Although he enjoyed reading, doing jigsaw puzzles and fishing, Curtis was a farmer at heart. He loved repairing and working on farm machinery, liked watching the crops grow and treasured his time working with Rolfe Holtan.

Curtis is survived by his wife, Mary Helen Knutson, of Forest City; a daughter, Kathleen Mangum, of Bird Island, Minn.; a son, Ernest and wife, Vange, of Lindstrom, Minn.; a son, Dan and wife, Jerri, of White Bluff, Tenn.; and four grandchildren, Dawn Allerson, Diana Novotny and husband, John, William Mangum and wife, Yvonne, and Erik Knutson; four great-grandchildren, Johnny and Chelsea Novotny, Nathanial Goestch and Benjamin Mangum. Also surviving are sisters, Emma Moen, Florence Green, Mildred Stras, Helen Christenson and husband, Alton, and Anna Straub and her husband, Gerry.

Curtis was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Corrine Floen; and brothers, Harlan, Ernest, Elmer and Lloyd.

SIDNEY STOTT

OSAGE — Funeral services were held for Sidney Stott, 76, of Mesa, Ariz., on Thursday, April 3, at Apache Wells Community Church.

His body was cremated and interment will be held at a later date in Mesa.

Sidney died Monday (March 31, 2003) of heart failure.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage.

There will be coffee, rolls and visiting with the family at 9 a.m., followed by the celebration service at 10 am.

Sidney Stott was born on June 10, 1926, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Sidney Stott Sr. and Avis Wineman. He graduated from Mason City High School.

He was married to Shirley Leaman on Jan. 5, 1946, and had a wonderful 57 years of marriage.

He served in the Army during World War II.

After his military service, he attended and received his Masters Degree from Iowa State Teachers College in 1951.

He taught instrumental music at Cal Community Schools before moving to Osage where he retired after 37 years of teaching.

His love for music and his students was well known. His students were known as “Sid’s Kids” for many years and he touched many lives.

Sidney belonged to the American legion, Rotary International and was past president of the Iowa Bandmasters Association.

He served as church organist for the United Methodist Church in Osage for many years. He continued his passion for music in recent years by providing keyboard music for many community functions and parties.

After his retirement from teaching, Sid and Shirley decided to give up the cold winters of Iowa and move to sunny Arizona where they have resided the past seven years.

Sid’s survivors include his wife, Shirley, of Mesa; two sons, Thomas and his wife, Karen, of Bettendorf, and Stephen and his wife, Deanna, of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Shelley Grimm and her husband, Robert, of New Haven; five grandchildren, David Stott and wife, Samantha, of Omaha, Neb.; Jennifer Stott of Waukee; Michael Stott and his wife, Angie, of Omaha; Rebecca Stott of Urbandale and Jackie Muller and her husband, Justin, of Osage; three great-grandchildren, Samuel Stott, Peter Charles and Hayleigh Charles, all of Omaha; and a sister-in-law, Bonnie Nettleton and her husband, Terry, of Mason City.

TITONKA — Verla Frances Brandt, 77, of Titonka died on Wednesday (April 2, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Verla Frances Brandt, the daughter of Henry W. (Doc) and Ella (Franzen) Brandt was born Nov. 1, 1925, on her parents’ farm northeast of Titonka. She graduated from Titonka High School in 1943.

She was baptized as a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church on Jan. 3, 1926, by the Rev. Adolph Killian. She was confirmed at Good Hope Lutheran Church by the Rev. Martin Schultz on July 7, 1940.

Verla was active in church and community activities, serving on the Good Hope Church Council and she organized programs for bridal showers for many years.

Verla worked in Callies General Store from 1943 to 1964. She then was a bookkeeper at the Titonka Farmers Cooperative Elevator until 1978. During the ’80s she worked for Maxine Madetzke’s Kountry Kitchen Café.

Verla was on the board of directors for the Titonka Care Center for 25 years and was an active member of the Titonka Federated Club for many years and served as an officer.

Verla and her brother, Bill, lived on the family century farm until a tornado destroyed all the farm buildings except the house in 1984. She then lived in Titonka until 1987, and then with her sister, Leona Christ, until 1995, when she moved into Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Verla was an avid sports fan, enjoying bowling and attending and assisting with girl’s high school sporting events.

She is survived by her sister, Leona Christ, of Lakota; a nephew, Wallace Christ and his wife, Marilyn, of Lakota; a niece, Arliss Hessig, of Rochester, Minn.; four great-nieces and two great-nephews, Kristin, Kathleen, and Karen Christ, and James, Michael and Danielle Hessig.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Bill on Sept. 23, 1980; and a brother-in-law, Walter Christ.

VERNELL ‘BUD’ LUDWIG

ALGONA — Vernell “Bud” Peter Ludwig, 84, of Algona, died on Thursday (April 3, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Algona, where he had been a resident since September of 1981.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona, with Father Paul Eisele officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Whittemore.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona, with a 5:30 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. parish prayer service.

Vernell Peter Ludwig was born March 22, 1919, in Whittemore, Iowa, to Frank J. and Josephine M. (Dorweiler) Ludwig.

Vernell “Bud” was educated in country school and Presentation Academy in Whittemore.

Bud was married to Alice Joynt on Sept. 2, 1941, at Clear Lake, Iowa.

He was an engineer and electrician at Pioneer Hi-Bred for 39 years.

He was a past member and board member of the Golden K Kiwanis. He was president of the Iowa Square Dance Callers Association as well as a member of the Algona Senior Citizens.

Bud was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church since 1942.

Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards, dancing, inventing, construction and doing the Corporal Works of Mercy. He was a square dance caller and teacher as well as dancer. Bud played the accordion, piano and organ.

In his retirement, he did numerous volunteer projects of carpentry and electrical work. He especially enjoyed his family gatherings.

Bud is survived by his wife, Alice; his children, Dea Thilges and husband, Jim, of Clear Lake, Iowa; Vern Ludwig and wife, Susan, of Marlborough, Mass. and Steve Ludwig and wife, Barb, of St. Cloud, Minn. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Andy Thilges and wife, Leslie, of Austin, Minn.; Nick Thilges and wife, Rhoni, of Manhattan, Kan.; Chris Thilges and wife, Tami, of LaCrosse, Wis.; Maryanne Ludwig and David Ludwig of Marlborough, Mass.; Cassie Ludwig and Peter Ludwig, of St. Cloud, Minn.; as well as six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Bud is also survived by one brother, Donald and wife, Alice Ludwig, of Bloomington, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers, Leo, Elmer, William, Arnold, and Paul; and two sisters, Louise Kajewski and Bernice Canzano.
