MABEL A. EHLING

CHARLES CITY - Mabel A. Ehling, 81, of 1115 Freeman St., died Thursday (April 10, 2003) at her home in the care of Hospice.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church, 701 First Ave., Floyd, with the Rev. Solomon Odoom officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Visitation will continue Monday one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church.

MYRON R. GARLOCK

CLEAR LAKE - Myron R. Garlock, 83, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of Christ, 2010 14th Ave N., Clear Lake, with Pastor James Allard officiating. Interment will be held a t the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Myron R. Garlock Memorial Fund.

Myron was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Clear Lake, the son of Sherman and Christine (Nasheim) Garlock. Myron attended Clear Lake schools, graduating from Clear Lake High School. He lived his entire life in Clear Lake.

Myron enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a sergeant in both the European and Pacific theaters during World War II.

He worked at Overton Green House, Chapel Clinic and the sugar beet factory for years.

Myron also worked at flea markets and enjoyed collecting coins, stamps and antiques.

He volunteered at the Kinney Pioneer Museum and the Community Kitchen in his later years. Myron was a lifelong member of the V.F.W.

Myron is survived by his local nephews, DuWayne Haugen and his wife, Cleta, Keith Haugen and his wife, Cathy, Myron Haugen and his wife, Pat, Herb Garlock and his wife, Jacky, Don Garlock and Dennis Garlock, all of Clear Lake; local nieces, Lindy Lemon and her husband, Mark, and Geneva Ulrich and her husband, Merlyn, both of Mason City; many other nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ollie, Glen and Karl.

Myron was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Winona Westcott and Idelle Haugen; and three brothers, Ernest, Don and Herb.

ROBERT E. KAMMEYER

GREENE - A funeral Mass for Robert E. Kammeyer, 82, of 205 West Dow St., Greene, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Greene with military honors conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a scriptural wake service and rosary service at 4:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Robert Edward Kammeyer was born Dec. 25,1920, in Greene a son of Herman and Doris (Thorpe) Kammeyer, and died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

As a young boy he received his education in the Greene public dchools and worked at the Farmers Creamery as a bottle washer. Following his graduation from high school in 1938, he was promoted to tester at the creamery.

On May 5, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps where he was engaged in the battles of Tarawa Atoll and Gilbert Islands and participated in the occupation of Saipan and Marianas Islands. He was honorably discharged on May 4, 1946.

He was united in marriage to Irene Brehmer of Clarksville and to this union was born one daughter. That marriage later ended in divorce.

Bob was employed by AT&T for 35 years. During this time he was united in marriage to Gail McGrath on July 21, 1956.

They lived in Minneapolis, Cincinnati, and Chicago until his retirement in 1982. They moved to Greene to their new home in 1983.

Bob's interests included his love for animals and his special companion, Alfie, working in the yard and going fishing.

Bob was proud to be an American and to have served his country. He was a member of the Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion and St. Mary's Catholic Church, both of Greene.

He is survived by his wife, Gail, of Greene; his daughter, Kathy Kammeyer of Denver, Colo.; two stepchildren, Joan McGrath of Minneapolis and James McGrath of Lincoln, Neb.; two half-brothers, Kenneth (Carole) Kammeyer of Corona, Calif., and Calvin Kammeyer of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

DEANNA LEE 'DEE' KEOUGH

MASON CITY - Deanna Lee "Dee" Keough, 65, of Mason City, died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Mark Lavrenz officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, rural Garner.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Dee was born April 8, 1938, in San Francisco, Calif., the daughter of Julia (Bradley) Bray. She attended school in Webster City, and graduated from Webster City High School.

On Sept. 22, 1984, Dee was united in marriage to Richard "Dick" Keough Sr. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Dee was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a 33-year resident of Mason City.

She retired from Holcim Cement Co. as a lab technician in 2000 after 23 years of employment.

Dee was known for her exquisite talent of crocheting. She enjoyed spending time planting flowers and taking care of her garden.

Dee loved to camp and especially enjoyed spending time at their cabin in Waterville, Minn., where she spent many hours fishing and visiting with her neighbors around the cabin.

She always had a special place in her heart for her grandchildren whom she loved so much. Dee always made it a point to ensure that each and every holiday was a special one.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Richard "Dick" Keough Sr. of Mason City; four daughters, Cindy Hansen of Des Moines, Susie English of Mason City, Lori Wiarda and husband, Robin Bathke, of Plymouth, and Debarah Debose of Arlington, Texas; one stepson, Richard Keough Jr. of Fresno, Calif.; special family friends, Holly and Nick Mennen of Mason City; one sister, Lynn Stewart of Portland, Ore.; one brother, Charles Coulter and wife, Liz, of Mucatine; and grandchildren, Ben, Barron, Bethany and Barry Hansen, Josh English, Shea and Tayla Wiarda, Elisha, Olivia, Demitrious and Hamilton Debose and Crystal, Christopher and Kyle Keough.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Julia Bray, and stepfather, Charles Bray, and her father, Harold Coulter.

LEROY E. KINGERY

MARBLE ROCK - Funeral services for Leroy E. Kingery, 78, of 531 Beelar St., Marble Rock, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock with Pastor Robert Shreve officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock with military honors conducted by Stroud Gates Post 278 American Legion of Marble Rock.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene and one hour before services Saturday at the church.

Leroy E. Kingery was born Nov. 12, 1924, in rural Union Township, Floyd County, a son of Donald and Chariotte "Lottie" (Barth) Kingery, and died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at his home in Marble Rock.

He received his education in the rural Floyd County schools and graduated from Marble Rock High School in 1943.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on July 15, 1946, where he served with the 971st Counter Intelligence Corps in Korea. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 24, 1947.

On Sept. 3, 1949, he was united in marriage to Wilma M. "Billie" Parker at Bethel Baptist Church in Marble Rock. They farmed in the rural Greene and Marble Rock area until 1976.

During that time, Leroy served as director on the boards of the Marble Rock Co-op Elevator, Floyd County F.H.A. and the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock schools. He was a charter member of the Marble Rock Lions Club from 1954-1976.

In 1976, they retired from farming and moved to Mason City and later moved to Clear Lake in 1981.

During this time, Lee delivered Winnebago motor homes and worked for Mason City Lumber and North lowa Weatherization and drove a bakery truck for Cashwise Grocery Store.

Lee spoke often of his joy in meeting so many new friends through A.A. and his various jobs after retiring from the farm. They moved back to Marble Rock in 1993.

The love of his life was the farm where he spent many hours helping the boys farm. Lee and Billie took a lot of motor home trips, enjoying many years of traveling, fishing and golfing.

They spent their first winter in Texas in 1991 and wintered there until 2002. While there, Lee enjoyed golfing and became famous for his six holes-in-one golf strokes at La Fioresta Golf Course in Mercedes, Texas.

Living family members include his loving wife of 53 years, Billie, of Marble Rock; three sons, Stan (Paula) Kingery of Nora Springs, Duane Kingery and Dan (Lynn) Kingery, all of Marble Rock; five grandchildren, Kristen, Alicia, Megan, Abigail and Darrin; two brothers, Maynard (Lorraine) Kingery and Gerald (Viola) Kingery, all of Charles City, and a sister, Francis Wahman of Ashville, NC. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Phyllis Kingery of Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers, Raymond in 1987 and Donald Jr. in 1993

ALVIN C. KITTLESON

MASON CITY - Alvin C. Kittleson, 80, of Mason City, died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland, Trinity Lutheran Church, and the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today and will continue Saturday morning until time of services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the Alvin C. Kittleson Memorial Fund.

Alvin was born on Dec. 3, 1922, in Mason City, the son of Clarence and Mabel (Lincicum) Kittleson. He attended school in Mason City.

Alvin enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942 and served in the Pacific Theatre for the duration of the war.

Upon his discharge, he returned to Mason City and married Herdis Anderson on June 11, 1945, in Mason City.

Alvin was a letter carrier in Mason City for many years, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the VFW.

He enjoyed playing golf and the Chicago Cubs.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Herdis, of Mason City; sons, Mike Kittleson and wife, Jayne, of Mason City, Eric Kittleson of Mason City and Brian Kittleson of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandchildren, Joel Kittleson and his wife, Michelle, of Mason City, Angi Kyllo and husband, Steve, of St. Paul, Minn., Angie Hauswirth and husband, Keith, of Corwith, Elizabeth Tompkins and her special friend, Kyle, of Austin, Texas, Van Tompkins and wife, Stacy, of Iowa City, and Emily Kittleson of Golden, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Michael, Kyle, Andy, Chaise, Kara, Kayla and Rocco Jordan; sisters, Dorothy Ingle of Russelville, Ky., and Arlene Factor of Mason City; a brother, Howard Kittleson of Ventura, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Warren; and a sister, Beverly.

NORA SPRINGS - Arlyn Lundstrom, 85, of Nora Springs, formerly of Waterloo and Fair Play, Mo., died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Celebration First Assembly of God, 745 April Street (Martin Road and 63 South), Waterloo, with the Rev. Donald Cox officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Waterloo.

MASON CITY - John E. Richards, 74, of Mason City, died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

BENA 'BEA' TRUAX

CLEAR LAKE - Bena "Bea" Truax, 95, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (April 10, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:30 until 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake in her memory.

Bena "Bea" Truax was born on May 27, 1907, in Grundy County, Iowa, near Wellsburg, the daughter of Henry and Alice (Mennen) Reysack. When Bea was 10 years old, the family moved to Aplington before moving back to Wellsburg and Parkersburg.

She received her education in the Butler County school system.

She was united in marriage to Theodore "Ted" Truax on Oct. 5, 1925, in Hampton. He preceded her in death on June 17, 1984.

After their marriage, they farmed together near Hampton until they bought a farm near Mason City, and later purchased a farm near Ventura. Bea moved to Clear Lake in 1986.

Bea enjoyed playing cards, especially Rummy and 500, having dances in their home, gardening, cooking and baking and loved living on their farm, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, church circles, VFW auxiliary, Senior Citizens Center and the Royal Neighbors, all in Clear Lake.

Left to cherish her memory are her three sons, Russell Truax and his wife, Lola, of Humboldt, Gary Truax and his wife, Pat, of Lincoln, Neb., and David Truax and his wife, Irene, of Mason City; a daughter, Joan Wipf and her husband, Richard, of Clear Lake; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; one brother, Jack Reysack and his wife, Marilyn, of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two grandchildren, six brothers and five sisters.

GREENE - Robert E. Watkins, 72, of 420 N. First St., died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at the Allison Care Center in Allison.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with the Rev. Gary Hatcher officiating. Inurnment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City with military honors conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Charles City.

GREENE — Memorial services for Robert E. Watkins, 72, of 420 N. First St., will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher offciating.

Inurnment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City with military honors conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Charles City.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene, where there will be a scripture service at 4:30 p.m.

Robert Eugene Watkins was born Oct. 8, 1930, in Charles City, a son of Claude Darius and Jennie Levine (Nelson) Watkins, and died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at the Allison Care Center in Allison.

He received his education in the Charles City Public Schools and as a young man worked for Sherman Nursery and Moltz Construction, both in Charles City.

He later worked for Oliver Corp. until he entered the United States Marine Corps on Nov. 7, 1951.

Following his honorable discharge on Nov. 6, 1953, he returned to Charles City, where he worked for the Monaghan Turkey Ranch.

On April 3, 1955, he was united in marriage to Betty A. Nelson in Austin, Minn. They moved to Minneapolis, where he was employed as a Cooper (Barrel Maker) at the Grief Brothers Cooperage Co. until 1960.

The following year, he became employed by the Greene Rendering Co., where he remained until the business closed in 1982.

Bob and his family moved to Greene to their present home in 1969.

Bob was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. His sense of humor, a practical joke or those quiet moments together will be greatly missed.

He had many interests, which included being a very good artist, good dancer, and collector of stamps and coins.

He enjoyed working out in the yard, gardening and planting trees.

He was an avid fan of the lowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Vikings, and a lover of Perkins pancakes.

He was baptized a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene on May 11, 1969. Bob was a faithful member and served as usher for many years.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was a volunteer for the Hawkeye Area Meals on Wheels.

Those thankful for having shared Bob’s life include his loving wife of 48 years, Betty of Greene; five daughters, Cindy (Mike) Eichmeier of Rockford, Nancy (Tim) Doudell of San Jose, Calif., Deb (Jimmy) Bostock of Hephzibah, Ga., Roberta “Bobbe” (Pat) Fitzgerald of East Hampton, Conn., and Julie Watkins of Mason City; one son, Matthew Robert Scott Watkins of Greene; six grandchildren, Mary Jennifer Eichmeier, Christine and Kelly Doudell, Brittany and Noah Bostock, and Jeffrey Fitzgerald; two sisters, Evelyn Marrs of Neosho, Mo., and Beverly (John) Jacobs of Ionia, and one brother, Jerry (Maxine) Watkins of Charles City.

Bob was preceded in death by two children in infancy, Jeffrey (1955) and Linda (1956); his parents; five brothers, Don, Charles, Jack, Dick and Harvey in infancy; and three sisters, Edith Bright, Helen McDonald and Dorothy Trainer.

JOHN E. RICHARDS

MASON CITY — John E. Richards, 74, of 410 Seventh St. S.E., died Wednesday (April 9, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Christopher Podhajsky officiating.

A private family inurnment service will be held on Tuesday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 6 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a rosary at 5:30 p.m.

John was born Jan. 6, 1929, in Janesville, Wis., one of two sons of Clyde W. and A. Lenore (Emerson) Richards.

He graduated from Pine Island High School in Minn-esota in 1946 and then entered the United States Army.

After his honorable discharge in 1949, John enrolled in Rochester Junior College in Rochester, Minn. He graduated in 1951 and was united in marriage that same year to Marion Vergenz in Watertown, Wis.

Through the years, John worked for Shell Oil Co., Goodyear, Allstate Insurance and Iowa Kemper Insurance.

After his retirement, he drove part-time for Martin Brothers Distributing in Mason City.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a loyal 20-year member of the Mason City Evening Lions Club. John was also the Monday morning announcer for KCMR Radio.

John is survived by his wife, Marion, of Mason City; four sons, Mark Richards of Solon, Iowa, Judd Richards of Stafford, Va., Scott Lawrence-Richards of Cedar Falls, and Jay Richards of Woodland Park, Colo.; and eight grandchildren, John, Grace, Elizabeth, Alex, Nate, Tim, Joshua and Jeremy.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Rodney, who died in World War II.

HELEN A. RASMUSON

BRITT — Helen A. Rasmuson, 87, of Britt, passed away Thursday (April 10, 2003) at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services for Helen Rasmuson will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday. at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Friends may greet the family from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to services Monday.

Helen, the daughter of Cyril and Barbara Anna Vavrik Formanek, was born April 9, 1916, in Britt. She grew up in the Britt area and attended Britt schools.

Helen was united in marriage with Lloyd Rasmuson on May 24, 1934. She was active in the Congregational Church and her circle.

Helen enjoyed antique sales, crafts, sewing, growing flowers and gardening.

Helen is survived by her son, Richard Rasmuson and his wife, Kathy, of Mason City; a son-in-law, Jim Pierce of Destrehan, La.; nine grandchildren, Mark Rasmuson and his wife, Brenda, of Swaledale, Sue Baldwin and her husband, Keith, of Burchinal, Sarah Cannon and her husband, Russ, of Tyler, Texas, Mike Rasmuson of Fort Dodge, Becky Pierce of Destrehan, La., Chris Pierce and his wife, Maureen, of Destrehan, La., Steve Pierce and his wife, Patti, of Searcy, Ark., Scott Pierce and his wife, Joan, of Sugarland, Texas, Melissa Flanagan and her husband, Keith, of Mandeville, La.; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Carol Rasmuson of Britt and Clara Formanek of Britt, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd, in 1986; daughter, Carol Pierce, on March 12, 2003; grandson, Timothy Pierce; stepmother; two brothers, Charles and Cyril, and two sisters, Mayme Engel and Barbara Johnson.

MASON CITY — Margery G. Woodhouse, 82, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Friday (April 11, 2003) at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth, with the Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Immediately following the services, a luncheon will be held at Bethel United Methodist Church, 503 E. South Street, Manly.

Margery was born Aug. 18, 1920, at Plymouth, the fifth child of Frank and Etta (Davey) Woodhouse. She graduated from Plymouth High School and Mason City Junior College. She then went on to graduate from the University of Iowa with a degree in physical education.

Margery worked as a teacher at the Michael Reese School of Nursing in Chicago, Ill. She then worked as a stewardess for United Airlines until her retirement in the late ’70s. She lived in San Francisco, Calif., until moving back to Iowa in 1983. While in San Francisco, she volunteered in a program for underprivileged children.

Margery lived at the Shalom Towers until entering the Good Shepherd Health Center in December 2001.

Margery loved to travel, read, tend her flower garden, visit her nieces and nephews and all small children.

Margery is survived by two sisters, Florence Pavey and Mary McCourt; one brother, Ray Woodhouse, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lloyd, who was killed in World War II, and Jim; two sisters, Alice Dills and Helen Burns; two nieces, Becky Jo Woodhouse and Sharon Nash, and also her fiancé, who was a Marine pilot in World War II.

She enjoyed Neil Diamond music, collecting crafts, her sweets, and her greatest love was her children and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by everyone.

BELMOND — Hubert Elsworth “Hub” Colby, 94, a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center, died Friday (April 11, 2003) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond. The Rev. Lowell H. Halvorson will be officiating. Burial will be Monday in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Hub Colby was born in Lake Mills on July 21, 1908, the son of Dr. Joseph E. and Millie (Ehel) Colby. He graduated from Lake Mills High School and then attended Iowa State College.

He was united in marriage to Faye Arlene Harris on July 7, 1930, at Princeton, Mo.

Hub was a police officer at Joice, Iowa, for a time and then was employed as a conservation officer for the state of Iowa for 12 years, commencing his tenure as an officer at Ledges State Park in Boone. He then spent time in the Sheldon area, and later served as a conservation officer in Wright County.

Hub was a proud veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. He had served stateside in Peoria, Ill., during World War II. Upon completion of his service in the military, he was employed as a supervisor for General Mills in Belmond from 1949-1965. When Central Soya acquired the Belmond location, he and his wife moved to Chicago, where he continued his employment with General Mills as a plant entomologist from 1965 until retirement in 1970.

They returned to Iowa, where they lived for a short time in Lake Mills and then moved back to Belmond, where they have lived since.

Hub had a life-long love of animals. He had raised pheasants. His children remember him bringing home wild skunks, badgers, a wolf and various other creatures when they were injured or abandoned, and the family nursed them back to health. He and his wife, Faye, continued this love of animals in their devotion and enjoyment of their dogs.

In the earlier years of his life, Hub enjoyed the hobby of piloting small airplanes. He loved growing flowers and vegetable gardening. Hub and Faye were longtime members of St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond and he was a member of the VFW.

Hub was a man who enjoyed the outdoors, his family, smoking his pipe and faithfully sharing nearly 72 years of marriage with his wife, Faye. He became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in November of 2000, where his wife also resides.

He is survived by his wife, Faye Colby, of the Belmond Health Care Center; his daughter, Harriet “Nubby” Woodin and her husband, Richard, of Clarion; his son, David Colby and his wife, Kaye, Silver Bay, Minn.; six grandchildren and 12 great- grandchildren.

Hub was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Olaf Arthur Thompson was born on June 7, 1917, in Mona, Iowa, in Mitchell County, the son of John G. and Clara (Stromley) Thompson. He was baptized in Mona and reaffirmed his faith through confirmation in the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church in the Norwegian language. He received his education in the Otranto school system.

He was united in marriage to Wilma Gentz on Nov. 25, 1937, at the First Lutheran Church parsonage in Northwood. Olaf farmed in the Northwood and Crystal Lake areas for 35 years before his retirement.

He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, gardening, flowers and reading.

He was a member of the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Brenda had a passion for her work, was admired by her colleagues for her dedication and ability to lead by example. Brenda touched many lives in her 20 years in the banking industry while employed with US Bank. Her most recent achievement was receiving her second Pinnacle Award in San Francisco on March 22, 2003. The Pinnacle Award illustrated the passion Brenda had for her work.

Brenda and her husband, Steve, were married in Hawaii on April 6, 1995, and resided in Hastings, Minn. Together they enjoyed traveling to many exotic destinations. In addition to being a devoted wife, Brenda was a committed Christian, a loving daughter, a caring sister, and an enthusiastic aunt and niece.

Janeice June Treloar was born on Aug. 3, 1945, in Mason City, the daughter of Gerald and Izetta (Baker) Klein. She graduated from the Clear Lake High School in 1963. Janeice also graduated from the Mason City School of Cosmetology. After completing her schooling, she worked as a hairdresser for Leone's Beauty Shop in Waverly. In 1967 she moved back to Clear Lake and worked for various beauty salons in the Clear Lake and Mason City area.

In the early 1970s, she started working for Ingersolls Flowers in Clear Lake before working for Kiefer's Floral Shop in Mason City and the Petal Shop in Clear Lake.

In 1978, Janeice and her husband, John, opened Treloar Flower and Grain in Clear Lake until 1983. Shortly there after she went to work for the Corner Drug Store in Clear Lake. Janeice worked at the Corner Drug Store until her health prevented her from working.

Janeice was united in marriage to John Treloar on June 18, 1966, at the St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nora Springs.

She was an avid gardner and loved flowers, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and her two grandsons.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, Clear Lake Friendly Garden Club and the Delta Zeta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

Burton Claire Anonson was born on July 11, 1926, at Joice to Bert and Clara (Bergland) Anonson.

Burton Anonson was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.

Mr. Anonson was a farmer.

He was united in marriage to Alvera Lewis on Nov. 14, 1970, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

He was a member of the Joice and Albert Lea American Legion posts.

PAUL V. VAAGEN

FOREST CITY — Paul V. Vaagen, 88, of Forest City, died Sunday (April 13, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City.

Paul Vernared Vaagen was born on Sept. 10, 1914, in Rake, the second of eight children born to Peder O. and Anna (Munson) Vaagen. He was baptized and confirmed at Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake and received his education in Rake.

On Oct. 14, 1940, he joined the National Guard in Mason City. He joined the Fifth Army, 34th Division, 144 Co. “F”, starting active duty in February of 1941 in Camp Clayborne, La.

His Army tenure included Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, and Algiers Africa.

He was injured while on guard duty one night and underwent many operations for a shrapnel injury to his right leg. He was awarded the Purple Heart and even though he suffered countless days of pain, his family and friends rarely heard a word of complaint.

Upon returning to the United States, he went to work for the Rake School, employed as head cook, bus driver, and custodian. He fell in love with Betsy Olson, a “tall beautiful teacher” also employed there.

Paul and Betsy were wed on June 28, 1950. Two years later, Steven Carl was born. Their second child, Julie Ann, came later. Paul and Betsy made their home in Forest City.

Paul remained active in Boy Scouts, The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and DAV.

Throughout his life he was a police officer and grocery store owner in Rake, chief mechanic at the Forest City Canning Company, an electrician for Fields in Forest City, chief mechanic for Fryer Farms of Forest City and finally 12 years with Waldorf College as chief production manager food department.

After his retirement, he and Betsy took two trips to Norway, two trips to Hawaii, and three trips to Alaska.

He loved gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Betsy, of Forest City; his two children, Steven Carl Vaagen of Marshalltown and Julie Smith and husband, Darrell, of Forest City; three grandchildren, Bjorn, Anna and Quincey all of Forest City. Also surviving are four sisters, Gertrude Russ, of Blue Earth, Minn., Edna Chidester and husband, Eugene, of Mesa, Ariz., Ada Leland and husband, Wally, of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Anna Mae Nodland and husband, Eugene, of Frost, Minn.; and a brother, Martin Vaagen and his wife, Corinne, of Stasca, Ill.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Oscar and Otis.

Paul, you are forever in our hearts. You touched all you encountered with your wit, wisdom, stories, jokes and above all, your love and caring. Your life has ended, but you continue to write your story in our hearts.
