Warren was born on Feb. 12, 1925, at Randall, Iowa, one of three children to Arthur Darwin and Cora Mae “Moe” Smith. He received his education in the Ventura area.

During World War II, Warren honorably served his country with the Combat Engineers in the Army. He entered the service on Dec. 7, 1944, at Fort Snelling and was discharged from Fort Sheridan in Illinois.

During his service, he served in the South Philippines as a truck driver and sharpshooter. He received the Asiatic Theater Ribbon, Bronze Battle Star, Liberation Ribbon and the Good Conduct medals.

Following his service, he farmed with his brother in the Rockford area. He was a very hard worker and built a successful farming operation, and one of his greatest joys was that his sons continued working the farm.

Farmers find it hard to retire but he did in 1982 for the most part. He did continue helping in the busy seasons and most recently with moving equipment from farm to farm.

Almost every day or even twice a day, he could be found driving from field to field to check the boys and see how the crops were doing.

He also was active with the American Legion in Rockford, Holy Name Catholic Church, golfing at the country club, and fishing in Canada or Minnesota.

In his younger years, he danced at the Surf, where he met his first wife, Mary JoAnn Bielefeld. They were united in marriage on June 10, 1950, at Cartersville, Iowa. To this union were born five children.

He enjoyed bowling, visiting with his family and neighbors, and tending to his livestock, which included the normal assortment of cows, pigs, turkeys and chickens.

His children were amazed at how well he danced and roller-skated, even though he did not do it often.

Following his wife’s death in November of 1989, he met his future wife, Lucille A. Fritz, while enjoying his winters in Florida. They were married in Rockford on Sept. 17, 1994, and have lived there ever since.

Those who appreciated and participated in Warren’s life include his wife, Lucille, of Rockford; one daughter, Jean and her husband Duane Forbes, of West Liberty; three sons, Darwin and Mary Smith and Kevin and Kathy Smith, all of Rockford, and Brian and Lori Smith, of Byron, Ill.; his brother, James A. and Lynnea Smith, of Mason City; two step-daughters, Cheryl and Ted Lupino, of Pembine, Wis., and Jody and Bruce Hensley, of St. Peters, Mo.; four step-sons, Terry and Debbie Fritz, of St. Charles, Mo.; James and Jean Fritz, of Sun Prairie, Wis.; William and Rose Anne Fritz, of Pickerington, Ohio, and Jay and Cheryl Fritz, of St. Charles, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

LEMOYNE ELLSWORTH ELLINGSON

NORTHWOOD-Lemoyne Ellsworth Ellingson, 77, died Thursday (April 17, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at the Elks Club, 1811 S.E. Broadway, Albert Lea, Minn., at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Lunch will follow.

Lem was born at home on the farm one mile west of Northwood, on April 24, 1925, the fifth child of John B. Ellingson and Barbra O. (Espedokken) Ellingson. He graduated from Northwood High School in 1943. While a senior, he enlisted in the Navy V-5 Program, and learned to fly in open-cockpit planes in the winter at Glenview, Ill. Serving as a Naval aviator, he flew off aircraft carriers in the Pacific Theater and taught many Navy pilots to fly. He was in the first jet training unit the Navy had, JTU-1. He learned to fly the F-80 Shooting Star. It was a single-place airplane, so when the student went up for the first time, he was alone. Lem then taught other Navy pilots to fly this airplane. He was honorably discharged as a lieutenant in 1950 and return-ed to Northwood to farm.

He married Jean Alice Taylor, and they have two daughters, Pamela Wallace and Kimberly Kotur and three grandsons; Ted Koerselman, Daniel and Michael Kotur.

Lem loved to farm, and always marveled at how Mother Nature made the corn grow and the new calves frolic happily in the pasture. In 1967 while continuing farming, Lem went back to flying, recertifying as a private, instrument, and commercial flight instructor. He taught flying out of the grass strip in Northwood until his death. He taught his wife, Jean, to fly, and helped well over 100 students earn their private, instrument and commercial pilot's licenses. His calm, hands-on, individual instruction will be remembered by numerous students, some of whom have gone on to fly for the airlines, and as corporate pilots.

Lem and Jean were members of many organizations nationwide, including the Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association, the 99's(an organization of women pilots), the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elk''s Lodge, and Northwood United Methodist Church. He had a beautiful tenor voice and was known for singing "The Messiah" in numerous choirs.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jean Taylor Ellingson of Northwood; daughters, Pamela Wallace (Scott), of Lafayette, Colo., and Kimberly E. Kotur (Mel) of Bozeman, Mont.; three grandsons, Ted Koerselman, Daniel and Michael Kotur; his sister June Hermanson of Colton, Calif., nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Hiram Ellingson; sisters, Crystle Nelson, and Kristine Noble Helgeland.

Lem had an excellent quality of life despite his three-and-a-half-year illness with a rare form of myelodyspastic anemia, and died suddenly of pneumonia.

The family suggests memorials be directed to Mercy Cancer Center or Critical Care Unit, 1000 4th St. S.W., Mason City, Iowa, 50401; The Blood Center of Iowa, 431 E. Locust, Des Moines, Iowa, 50309, Attention: Stacy Sime; or The National Museum of Naval Aviation, 1750 Radford Blvd., Suite B, N.S.A., Pensacola, Fla., 32508.
