JOHN W. HANSON

MASON CITY - John W. Hanson, 79, of 18595 280th St., died Thursday (April 3, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and continue one hour before services at the church Monday. A Knights of Columbus rosary service will be held at 6 tonight and a Scriptural wake service at 6:30 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to Holy Family Catholic Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

John was born Aug. 2, 1923, in Mason City the son of John and Etta Mae (Pearce) Hanson. He graduated from Mason City High School. He married Mary Ellen Currier April 3, 1948, in Mason City.

John lived on the family farm for 79 years, where he was engaged in farming. He enjoyed his family, farming, traveling, gardening, his friends at Shill's Coffee Shop, Rock Falls Senior Citizen Center and singing at Good Shepherd Health Center.

John was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, where he ushered, along with the Knights of Columbus, Waterloo Co-op, N.F.O., Farmers Gas & Oil, North Iowa Co-op and was a past member of the Cerro Gordo County Zoning Board. John and wife, Mary Ellen, spent 18 winters in Apache Junction, Ariz.

On April 3, 2003, the day of John's death, he and Mary Ellen celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary, first united then separated, completing their circle of love.

John is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Hanson of Mason City; four sons, Jerry Hanson and wife, Barbara, of Galesburg, Ill., Paul Hanson and wife, Nancy, of Mason City, Bill Hanson and wife, Cheryl, of Rochester, Minn., and Mike Hanson and wife, Kim, of Adel, and seven grandchildren, Jessica, Jerilee, Jack, Beth, Cathy, Mark and Dan.

John was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Verne and Earl Hanson.

HELEN O. KLOUSIA

CARSON CITY, Nev. - Helen O. Klousia, 75, was born Sept. 22, 1927, in Minnesota, to Lewis and Lena Oitzman. She passed away Thursday (April 3, 2003) in Carson City, Nev. She was a resident of Hampton for 24 years, lived in Mesa, Ariz. from 1976-1990 and had resided in Carson City for the last 13 years. Helen was a former office supervisor for the California Interstate Telephone Co. in Victorville, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert Oitzman. Helen is survived by her husband of 54 years, Irving Klousia, of Carson City; a son, Larry, and his wife, Judy, of Cerritos, Calif.; a daughter, Beverly Gaston of Phoenix, Ariz.; brothers, Donald Oitzman of Mesa, LaVerne Oitzman of Mesa and Richard Oitzman of Apple Valley, Calif.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

PRESCOTT, Wis. - Ashton Lieuween Easton, 3 months old, died Friday (April 4, 2003) at his home in Prescott.

LUCILLE WARD

MASON CITY - Lucille Ward died Thursday (April 3, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa at the age of 86.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City with Pastors Bill Poland and Keith Scott presiding. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Thornton.

Lucille Fern Ward was born Nov. 13, 1916, in Meservey, a daughter of Earl and Ruth (Watson) Enabnit. She attended several area schools.

On July 10, 1935, Lucille was united in marriage with Willard Ward at Albert Lea, Minn. They farmed together in the Swaledale and Sheffield areas for more than 51 years.

Lucille will be remembered for fixing lunch for her guests. She enjoyed her flowers and her gardening and fancy work. She especially liked spending time with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

When time allowed, Lucille would enjoy fishing with her husband. Lucille is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Craig) Beek, Moline, Ill., and Sharon (Wayne) Watt, Cresco; a son, Dennis (Maridee) Ward, Belmond; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Orlyn (Bethel) Enabnit, Swaledale; sisters-in-law, Ruth (John) Rovang, Fertile; Virginia Ward, Mason City, and Esther Ward, Swaledale, and many nieces and nephews. Lucille is preceded in death by her parents, husband, two infant sons and a sister, Doris Ward.

OSAGE - John E. Hemann, 77, of Osage, died Friday (April 4, 2003) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center-Hospice Unit in Osage.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. Philip Recker officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Osage. Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, where there will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 3:30 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7 p.m.

John, the son of Joseph and Dorothy (Smith) Hemann, was born Sept. 7, 1925, in Meyer and attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Meyer. As a young adult, John worked as a hired hand for area farmers for six years.

John was united in marriage to E. Joan Michels on June 2, 1948, at Sacred Heart Church in Meyer. They made their home and farmed near Osage for 25 years.

In 1973, they moved to their own farm near Riceville, where they lived for 30 years. They returned to Osage in 2003 after purchasing a home in town.

John enjoyed playing cards, music, dancing, woodworking and traveling with his wife. He enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren, attending their numerous events in sports, music and theater. John had a strong faith. He proudly proclaimed he would never have a million dollars but he had a family worth a million.

John is survived by his wife, Joan, of Osage; four daughters, Marilyn (Dave) Osterhaus of Earlville, Karen (Tom) Thome of Osage, Barb (Steve) Gulick of Cedar Falls, Jean (Richard) Porter of Des Moines; six sons, Tom (Mary) of Streator, Ill., Don (Cheryl) of St. Louis, Mo., Alan (Linda) of Riceville, John of New York, N.Y., Michael (Tracee) of New Berlin, Wis., and Brian of St. Louis Park, Minn.; three brothers, Ray (Beatrice) of Adams, Minn., Arthur (Darlene) of Osage, Kenneth (Ann) of St. Ansgar; three sisters, Sr. Mary Kenneth of Okolona, Miss., Angela (Herb) Werner of Osage and Theresa (George) Theis of Plymouth; two sisters-in-law, Kate Hemann and Norraine Hemann, both of Osage; two brothers-in-law, Leo Michels of Des Moines and Robert (Betty) Michels of Sauk Center, Minn.; three sisters-in-law, Ann (Tom) Marsolek of Denver, Colo., Rose (Dale) Bock of Des Moines, and Jeanne Brandt of Northfield, Minn.; numerous nieces and nephews

SHERREN M. PAINE

SHEFFIELD - Sherren M. Paine, 63, formerly of Owatonna, Minn., died Tuesday (April 1, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield. Following the memorial service, the family gathered at the Sheffield Care Center for refreshments and the sharing of memories of Sherren's life.

Sherren was born Oct. 16, 1939, in Mason City, to Roger and Irene (Barker) Massee. She was a member of the graduating class of Mason City High School in 1957. She married Bill Paine in 1966.

Throughout her life, she worked various jobs. She was employed at Rockford Nursing Home, Libby Owens/ Ford Glass Co. and Wellborn Industries in Mason City. For several years, she managed a restaurant in Rockford. Her hobbies included gardening, woodcarving and sewing, and when she was younger, she enjoyed dancing with her husband.

Sherren is survived by her parents, Roger and Irene Massee, who reside at the Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield; seven daughters, Sandra Knipfel of Clarion, Starla and Bill Silvey of Greene, Janice and Dennis Earnst of Jackson, Minn., Lorri and Richard Waters of Owatonna, Minn., Nancy and Denney Stewart of Hampton, Tammy and Rusty Miller of Rockwell, and Billie Jo and John Dow of Boone; two sons, Ronald and Diana Paine and Charles Paine, all of Hampton; 27 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 1995, two sons, Ted in 1971 and Michael in 1968, and one brother.

HAMPTON - Susanna Elizabeth Raber Renoe, 85, of Hampton, died Friday (April 4, 2003) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility, Hampton.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hampton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Medford Cemetery, Holden, Mo., at 1 p.m. Thursday.

DEANNE S. BICKFORD

LAKE MILLS - DeAnne Sue Bickford, 46, of Lake Mills, formerly of Fayette, died Thursday (April 3, 2003) at her home from complications of pnuemonia.

Her funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Fayette Community Church with the Rev. Carl Tenney officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery, Fayette.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Fayette and one hour preceding services at the church Monday.

DeAnne was born Feb. 12, 1957, at Oelwein. She attended grade school at Randalia and high school at Maynard.

DeAnne lived for many years in Mason City before moving to Wichita, Kan., in 1988. She has made her residence in Lake Mills since August of 2001 and had been employed as a CNA at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City since August, 2002.

She is survived by one son, Jaron Bickford of Lake Mills; her mother and step-father, Kathy and Jack Kirby of Wichita, Kan.; two brothers, Jeff Kirby and Scott Kirby, both of Wichita, and one sister, Julie (Jason) Fisher, Wichita.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Clarence and Mildred Nuss.

ROLAND J. HIER

MASON CITY — Roland J. Hier, 90, of 1037 19th St. S.W., Mason City, died Friday (April 4, 2003) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. A private family committal service will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery on Tuesday before the services at the church.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Harmony Ranch in memory of Roland J. Hier.

Roland Jerome was born on August 4, 1912, the eleventh child of T.E. and Sophia M. (Nelson) Hier.

He was united in marriage to Margaret E. Parker on July 31, 1938 in Hancock, Minnesota. Rollie served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. He started in the grocery business in Minneapolis and later owned a grocery store in Sleepy Eye, Minn.

They moved back to Minneapolis in 1964, and he went to work at Lunds Grocery. In July 1978 they retired to Apache Junction, Arizona. In April 1998 they moved to the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Rollie loved music, gardening, nature, and going for walks; but most of all he loved being with his family. He was an inspiration to many people and touched people’s lives through his deep faith in God.

Rollie is survived by two daughters; Becky Finstad and her husband, Richard, of Clear Lake and Barbara Suelter and her husband, Gerald, of Oxnard, Calif.; eight grandchildren, John Finstad and his wife, Amy, of Des Moines, Jim Finstad and his wife, Tristi, of Clear Lake, Molly Harris and her husband, Brad, of Clear Lake, Shelley Daniels and her husband, Chris, of Virginia Beach, Va., Suzie Martin of Garberville, Calif., Amanda Suelter of Long Beach, Calif., Becky Suelter of Oxnard, Calif., and Mina Suelter of Oxnard, Calif.; eight great grandchildren, William and Jack Finstad, Tucker and Madison Finstad, Haley Etzel, Wyatt and Becca Daniels, and Ian Suelter; and one sister Charlotte Hansen of Sleepy Eye, Minn.

WALDO B. HOLSTAD

FOREST LAKE, Minn. —Waldo B. Holstad, 77, of Forest Lake, Minn., died suddenly on Thursday (April 3, 2003).

His funeral will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Sion Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church.

Waldo was a beloved husband, dad, grandpa and brother.

He is survived by his wife, LaVonne, of 55 years; three children, Linda (the Rev. Lynn) Groe, Wayne (Julie) Holstad and Joel (Jody) Holstad; eight grandchildren, Karna, Brad, Jon, Joe, Amanda, Peter, Devon and Bryce; two brothers, Richard (Helen) and Arden (Lois) Holstad; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Holstad, many other relatives and friends.

WILLIAM JURGENS

HAMPTON — William Jurgens, 79, of Hampton, died Sunday (April 6, 2003) at Franklin General Hospital, Hampton.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Zion Reformed Church, rural Hampton, with the Rev. Arthur J. Zewert officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Sheffield.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

William was born on March 28, 1924, in Franklin County, Iowa to Herman T. and Minnie (Koenen) Jurgens. He attended Marion Township country schools.

He made his living as a farmer in rural Hampton and as a Franklin County supervisor for 16 years.

He was first married to Audrey Symens on Aug. 5, 1947, at Zion Reformed Church. Audrey passed away in 1994. He later married Eleanor Manganiello on June 12, 1999, in a little country church.

He was an active member of Zion Reformed Church where he was an elder and Sunday school teacher. He was involved in lay ministry which was very important in his life. William was involved with many committees and activities in Franklin County. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and traveling. He especially loved to spend time with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, of Clear Lake; three daughters, Jean and her husband, John Mollenbeck, Scenoa, Ill., Sonna and herhusband, Dick McMahon, of Latimer, Diane and her husband, Ken Bird, of Britt; step-daughter, Rebecca Manganiello of Minneapolis, Minn.; step-son, Steve and his wife, Liz Manganiello, of Minneapolis; a sister, Elizabeth Koenen, Sheffield; a sister-in-law, Ruth Jurgens, of Sheboygan Falls, Wisc.; grandchildren, Tjaden and wife, Alycia Pals, Arika and her husband, Eli McGallian, Amber and Garrett Mollenbeck, Aaron, Adam, Andrew Bird; great-grandchild, Dylan McGallian.

LIVERMORE — Alice Mae Loughry, 61, of Livermore died Friday (April 4, 2003) as a result of injuries received in a car accident west of Livermore.

ELEANOR L. SHAW

FOREST CITY — Eleanor L. Shaw, age 86, of Forest City, died Saturday (April 5, 2003) at Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Eleanor Luella Carlsen Shaw was born on February 13, 1917, in Martin County, Minnesota. She was the tenth and youngest child of Carl and Malinda (Knutson) Carlsen. She was baptized and confirmed in Palestine Lutheran Church, rural Dolliver, Iowa. At age 13 she moved with her parents to Estherville, Iowa. She received her elementary education in a rural school in Martin County. She graduated from Estherville High School in 1934, and from Waldorf College with an A.A. degree in 1936. After two years teaching in Emmet County rural schools, she attended Minneapolis Business College for one year. While there, she studied organ at MacPhail School of Music. Upon returning to Estherville in 1939 she became organist at Estherville Lutheran Church, a position she held until she and her family moved to Forest City in 1960.

On May 23, 1940, she married Everett Shaw. To their union four children were born, Carlson Jerome, Carmen Elizabeth, Richard Vernon and Roberta Eleanor. Eleanor began teaching piano in her home in 1957, continuing for 35 years, until her retirement in 1992. She was an active member for many years of the Iowa Music Teachers Association. Her love of music influenced her children, all of whom attended Waldorf College and sang in the Waldorf Choir as Eleanor had done. She served in many capacities in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Forest City and volunteered for many years at the Good Samaritan Center.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and four sisters and daughter-in-law, Gerd Nesheim Shaw.

She is survived by her husband Everett; her children, Carlton of Sumner, Carmen of Oshkosh, Wis., Richard and wife Beth of Mason City, Robert of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren, Eric of Redondo Beach, Calif., Beth of St. Paul, Minn., Andrew of Sumner, and Sarah, Scott, Malinda and Daniel of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Eleanor Shaw was loved, admired and respected by all of her extended family and the community.

DANIEL JAY SMITH

PARKDALE, Ore. — Memorial services for Parkdale, Oregon, resident Daniel Jay Smith, were held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Anderson’s Tribute Center.

Daniel Smith died March 28, 2003, at the Hood River Care Center. He was 55 years of age. He was born Nov. 21, 1947, in Mason City to Paul and Rita (Koran) Smith. He grew up and attended school in Mason City and then attended DeVry Technical School in Chicago, Ill. He then moved to Parkdale, Oregon, in 1977.

Dan enjoyed fishing, hunting, photography, practical jokes, and cats. Dan had a small business crafting hunting knives. He was a pilot and enjoyed flying and anything having to do with planes.

He is survived by his mother, Rita Smith, of Osage; two sisters, Linda Viani and her husband, Joe, of Penrose, Colo., and Jean Arndt and her husband, Gerald, of Osage; nephew, David Viani of Parker, Colo., and nieces, Leslie Busing of Windsor, Colo., and Gina Miklas of Omaha, Neb.

YORKTOWN, Va. — Dennis K. Willcox, 57, died on Wednesday (March 26, 2003) in Yorktown, Va.

Dennis was born in Mason City, Iowa on Oct. 16, 1945, and graduated from Mason City High School in 1964. He served in the United States Air Force for 20 years and for the United States Government for nine years.

He enjoyed auto racing, fishing, hunting and was involved with the Boy Scouts. He was very proud of his two sons who were both Eagle Scouts.

He was a life member of the VFW in Mason City, Iowa.

He will be sadly missed by his parents, Harry and Betty Willcox, of Mason City; two sons, Garrett, Newport News, Va. and Justin, of Richmond, Va.; wife, Yvonne (Hostetler); a special aunt, Gwen Schaer, of Mason City; two special uncles, Don Ransom, of Ventura, and Keith Harriott, of Florida; and numerous cousins and friends.

On Oct. 17, 1927, she was united in marriage to Virgil W. Mosher in Mason City. To this union, two sons were born, Willis and Harvey.

Gordetta assisted her husband in their electrical business.

She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, the Order of Eastern Star and enjoyed gardening and sewing.

Gordetta is survived by one son, Harvey and his wife, Jane, of Riceville; four grandchildren, Dawn and Bob Angus, of Aurora, Colo., Amy and Brad Beckmann, of Melbourne, Fla., Kerry and Sharon (Smith) Mosher, of Fort Mill, S.C., and Kyle and Kathy (Eastman) Mosher, of Mason City. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.

MASON CITY — Juanita O. “Jennie” Gleason, 81, of 440 25th St. S.W., died following a short illness on Saturday morning (April 5, 2003) at USA Healthcare Center in Mason City.

Juanita Oliva Gleason was born Jan. 31, 1922, in San Franciso Del Rincon, Mexico, to Henry R. and Julia (Oliva) Barragan.

Since 1935, Jennie has been a resident of the Mason City area and until recently, enjoyed many years in her home located at 1316 N. Washington Ave.

She was a dedicated employee for 26 years at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in the housekeeping department and formally retired in January of 1988.

On May 8, 1954, Jennie was united in marriage to George G. Gleason at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mason City. They became the proud parents of two children, Dave and Patti.

George and Jennie treasured the opportunity to travel together, especially their yearly visit with George’s family in San Antonio, Texas. They expressed much joy in attending Mexican dances at various area locations.

Jennie took great pride in nurturing her family with unconditional love and her wonderful cooking ability.

Dave and Patti have fond memories of their mother preparing and serving tamales at Christmas time, her Sunday beef roast dinners and carnitas.

One of the simple pleasures Jennie enjoyed, was washing dishes at anyone’s home, anytime. She greatly loved the holidays and large family gatherings. Her family expressed that Jennie was very generous and always well organized.

She was a small but mighty woman who found great passion in maintaining a meticulous home and yard. She lovingly tended to her beautiful tulips and roses.

Jennie will be sadly missed by her daughter, Patricia Peterson, of Fridley, Minn. and her son, David Gleason and his wife, Chris and their daughters, Crystal and Savannah, of Mason City. She is also survived by her four sisters, Ramona Reynozo, of Kansas City, Kan., Carmelita “Carmen” Alvarez and Carolyn “Carrie” Huston, of Mason City, and Josephine “Josie” Gasca, and her husband, Modesto, of Mason City; two brothers, Joe “Danny” Barragan, and his wife, Ortencia, of St. Paul, Minn., and C.R. Barragan, and his wife, Noel, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Marilyn Joan Hillman was born Feb. 11, 1952, to Martin Richard (Dick) and Mavis Caroline (Grosland) Nelson in Albert Lea. She was a lifelong resident of Albert Lea and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Marilyn graduated from Albert Lea High School and attended Mankato State College, receiving a bachelor of science degree cum laude in elementary education with minors in library science and special education.

She continued her education at Mankato State and earned her master of science degree as a media specialist and attended additional graduate classes.

On July 16, 1977, Marilyn was united in marriage to Gary Lee Hillman at Trinity Lutheran Church. Her life revolved around her family and spending time with them. She was wife and mother first but then so much more, a hockey and soccer mom. For those of us who are involved in those sports, we know just how important those moms are.

Marilyn loved riding around in her Corvette, boating, her pets, gardening, and the Friday nights at Casa Zamoras.

Mildred "Millie" Irene Floy was born March 5, 1906 in Wisner Township in Franklin County, near Thornton, Iowa, the daughter of Julia and August Hansen. She graduated from Thornton High School in 1923.

On Feb. 12, 1925, Mildred was married to Wilhelm P. Floy. They farmed near Thornton.

Mildred was a lifetime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Thornton.

When she was a young girl she was a 4-H member; later she was a 4-H leader and then served many years on Cerro Gordo County 4-H Committee. She also was a Red Cross volunteer for many years.

Millie was known as an avid flower and vegetable gardener and she loved to share her produce with others.

She was a member of the Swaledale Garden Club, Thornton Women's Club, Senior Citizens and Quality Club.

She is survived by one son, Buford and his wife, Susan, of Thornton; one daughter, Sandra Teggatz and her husband, Eugene, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; daughter-in-law, Irene (Floy) McKenney and her husband, Martin, of Storm Lake; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren;and many other relatives and friends.

Wilbur Mitchell Schram was born Nov. 8, 1916, the oldest son of William and Lenore Rose (Mitchell) Schram in Titonka, Iowa. He graduated from Titonka High School and attended Iowa State University, studying engineering for two years.

On May 28, 1939, he married Helen Beed. They lived in Titonka, where he was employed by the Farmer's Co-operative Elevator.

In 1944-46 he served in the Army during World War II and the Battle of the Bulge.

He returned to Titonka and was a drainage contractor.

In 1955 he moved to Clear Lake and to Ft. Dodge where he was a heavy-equipment salesman. The family returned to Clear Lake in 1962, where he engaged in farming and drainage contracting until his retirement in 1980.

His special interest was music. He was a member of the River City Barbershop Chorus for about 50 years and he sang in the church choir wherever he lived.

He spent much time doing volunteer R.S.V.P. work. He especially enjoyed being a docent at the Stockman House for 10 years.

He loved to travel and spent many winters in Green Valley, Ariz., where he was active in lapidary work.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed good conversation with friends and acquaintances. He treasured the time he spent with younger members of the family.

He loved gardening and sharing his ground cherries and produce with his friends.

He was a member of the Spirit of Hope United Methodist Church of Peoria, Ariz., the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Helen; a son, Robert Schram and his wife, Donna, of Peoria, Ariz.; a brother, Herbert Schram, and his wife, Doris, of Geneseo, Ill.; three sisters, Katheryn Kuchenreuther and her husband, Kenneth, of Titonka, Harriet Schutter and her husband, Herman, of Mankato, Minn., and Lois Holcomb and her husband, Reuben, of Swea City; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 15 nephews and nieces and their children.

FLORENCE E. SIMONS DYER

SPEARFISH, S.D. - Florence E. Simons Dyer, 85, of Spearfish, died Saturday (April 5, 2003) at Lookout Memorial Hospital.

Florence E. Jacobs was born Nov. 12, 1917, in Rockford, Iowa, to William and Zelda (Ransom) Jacobs. She was raised and went to school in Dougherty, Iowa. She graduated from Dougherty High School in 1934 and attended a Business School.

She was married to Victor Simons on March 30, 1937 in Garner, and they made their home in Crystal Lake.

She worked at Hanson's Inc., which later became Winnebago in Forest City until she retired in the early 1970s.

They spent their winters in central Florida until 1976, when they moved to Florida permanently and traveled in their motor home.

Victor died on Aug. 23, 1981, and she moved to Spearfish, S.D., in 1987.

She married John Dyer on March 16, 1988, at Spearfish, S.D. John died April 16, 1995 and she continued to live in Spearfish.

Florence was a member of the Ladies of the Moose in Phoenix, Ariz. She volunteered at the Gift Shop in Lookout Memorial Hospital and the Salvation Army Store in Spearfish.

She was a member of the Spearfish Senior Citizens Center and enjoyed playing cards with her friends.

She is survived by one daughter, Sharon Johnson and her husband, Roger, of Upton, Wyo.; three grandchildren, Sherri Randall and her husband, Rod, of Upton, Wyo., Rodney Johnson of Fertile, Iowa and Russell Johnson and his special friend, Sharon Kvammen, of Forest City; one sister, Margaret "Peggy" Turner, of Minneapolis, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Victor Simons and John Dyer; two brothers and four sisters.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Greenwood Cemetery in Upton, Wyo.

The family requests memorials be given to the Upton Volunteer Ambulance or the Antelope Heights Senior Housing in Upton, Wyo.

EINER M. LUNDE

NORTHWOOD - Einer M. Lunde, 63, of Northwood, died Tuesday (April 8, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City of pancreatic cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Burial will take place at the State Line Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South in Northwood, and will continue one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Einer was born on May 6, 1939, near Wanamingo, Minn., the son of Einar and Mabel (Trelstad) Lunde. He attended Wanamingo schools, then Waldorf College, where he met Sharyl Buchanan. They were married on Aug. 28, 1959, in Gordonsville, Minn. and resided in Rochester, Minn., until 1966.

At the time of his death, Einer was Executive Director of Winnebago, Worth Counties Betterment Council, responsible for expanding economic opportunities in the region.

Prior to this position, Einer had worked for 12 years as a consultant for housing rehabilitation programs in many parts of Iowa and as a housing inspector for the North Iowa Council of Governments.

He had also been employed as CEO of Northwood Sunrooms from 1988-1992 and B & K Lumber from 1966 to 1987.

Einer had a long-standing involvement in community development. He was a founding member of the Viking Industrial Park board in Northwood and served as a member of the Northwood Development Corporation.

Einer was president of I-35/105 Welcome Center Inc. and was instrumental in the establishment of the Top of Iowa Welcome Center.

Other board memberships included Secretary of the Mental Health Center of North Iowa, Chair of the Top of Iowa Regional Coordinating Council, Chair of NIACOG, and Chairman of the North Central Municipal League.

Einer's devotion to community was also evidenced by his serving as mayor of Northwood for eight years, council member for 12 years and 23 years of service on the volunteer fire department.

He was recognized in 1986 as Northwood's Outstanding Citizen and in 1982 for outstanding community service.

Throughout the years he was a member of the Jay-cees, Lions Club, and served as a Boy Scout leader.

Since moving to Northwood in 1966, Einer was a member of the First Lutheran Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, youth group leader, and a longtime member of the Choir.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Sharyl; sons, Joel Lunde and his wife, Carol, of Des Moines, Jeff Lunde and his wife, Angie, of Rochester, Minn., and Kirk Lunde and his wife, Regina, of Asheville, N.C.; a daughter, Angela Lunde, of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Burnell Lunde and his wife, Pat, of Wanamingo, Minn.; in addition to six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

ALICE IRENE SLOAN

CORWITH - Alice Irene Sloan, 89, of Corwith, died on Monday (April 7, 2003) at the Hancock County Hospital in Britt.

Alice Irene Sloan was born to Frank and Mary (McCutcheon) Bjornson on June 10, 1913 at the farm home in Goldfield. Having received and professed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior she continues to be in relationship with the Lord in her new home. She served the Lord on Earth using her God-given spiritual gifts of mercy and hospitality.

In 1932, Alice graduated from Goldfield High School. She taught country school for two years in Goldfield, then received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She continued teaching elementary school at Swea City, Sac City and Ames.

On April 6, 1947, Alice married Marvin John George Sloan of Corwith at her parent's farm home.

As a faith follower of Christ, Alice was a longtime member of the Corwith United Methodist Church. She served multiple terms as the Church membership chairperson and was active in United Methodist Women's work.

In the community Alice enjoyed Delta Club and Homemakers Club. Service to others, gardening, baking, crafts and being a friend filled her life.

Alice is survived by two sons, Kenneth and his wife, Mary, of Milford, and Steve of Corwith; grandchildren, Aaron Sloan of Milford, David Sloan and his wife, Cathy, and great-granddaughter, Tori, of Ames, and Mark Sloan of Ames. Also surviving is her sister, Martha Krauss, and her husband, Elmer; sister- in-law, Miriam Bjornson, and her husband, Charles Walker, of Palo Alto, Calif.; sister-in-law, Margaret Glawe, of Kanawha; brother-in-law, Glen Sloan and his wife, Phyllis, of Corwith; along with several nephews and nieces.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin; her parents; brother, the Rev. Harold Bjornson of Palo Alto, Calif.; and sister, Luva Hughett, of Des Moines.
