BERNIECE REED

HAMPTON - Berniece Reed, 94, of Hampton, died Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at the Hampton Care Center.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with the Rev. Julie Poore-Christensen officiating. Burial will be in Ingham Township in Hansell.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services Wednesday.

ERNEST 'BOYD' ANDERSEN

MASON CITY - Ernest "Boyd" Andersen, 78, of 16432 310th St., died Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Plymouth, with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with a flag presentation and taps conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the Ernest Andersen Memorial Fund.

Ernest was born March 19, 1923, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the son of Otto and Maren (Nielsen) Andersen. He attended Lime Creek No. 5 country school.

Ernest served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 260th combat engineers battalion in the European Theatre. He was discharged in 1945.

Ernest married Marion Nozicka on Aug. 16, 1947, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mason City. He retired from Armour's after 42 years.

Ernest was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He coached little league baseball, and enjoyed fishing, gardening, cards, and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Marion Andersen, of Mason City; his children, Paula Klemesrud and husband, Wendell, of Bolingbrook, Ill., Susan Steenblock and husband, Leslie, of Mason City, Marc Andersen and wife, Diane, of Clear Lake, and Brian Andersen, of Mason City; five grandchildren, Andrew Steenblock, Kathryn and Joe Klemesrud, and Matthew and Kristen Andersen; two sisters-in-law, Beulah Andersen, of Clear Lake, and Ruth Andersen, of Bigstone, S.D.; three brothers-in-law, William VerHelst, of Nora Springs, Ernest Hard, of Mason City, and Ben Nozicka, of Mason City, and many nieces and nephews.

Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters, Edna Rish, Elsie McIlhatten, Stella Andersen, Lily Imlay, Clara Andersen, Leona VerHelst and Betty Hard; seven brothers, Fred, Lars, Martin, Clarence, Harry, Otto and Walter.

KNOXVILLE - Dan J. Jones, 47, of Knoxville, formerly of Rockwell, died Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001) in Des Moines.

His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Swaledale United Methodist Church in Swaledale. Interment will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Swaledale.

MORRIS CHARLSON

FOREST CITY - Morris Charlson, 91, of Forest City, died Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001) at Westview Care Center in Britt.

His funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City with Rev. Lee Laaveg of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services Thursday at the funeral home.

Morris A. Charlson was born in Lake Mills on Dec. 1, 1909, the son of Martin and Ada (Twito) Charlson. He received his education at Reba County School near Joice.

He married Myrtle Cleveland on July 3, 1937, in Mason City. The couple made their home in Forest City for many years. In 1957, the family moved to Des Moines.

Morris worked for several construction companies over the years, specifically as a bricklayer in masonry work. After retiring in 1975, the couple returned to Forest City.

Morris loved to fish and hunt. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, liked flowers and gardening, and treasured time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Janice and David Moore, of Des Moines, and Jerry and Fran Charlson, of Des Moines; also, five grandchildren, Brian and his wife, Sherry, Darrin and his wife, Susan, Kevin, Ginger and her husband, Kerry, and Marcy and her husband, Scott; nine great-grandchildren, Amanda, Scott, Jacob, Nick, BJ, Ashley, Christopher, Kaitlyn and Gabriel; a sister, Bertha Monson, of Forest City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Myrtle; four brothers, Clifford, Edgar, Homer and Royden Charlson; two sisters, Gilma Solomonson and Agnes Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

ROBERT D. BURZETTE

STEWARTVILLE, Minn. - Robert D. Burzette, 67, of 125 Second Ave. N.E., died Sunday (Oct. 7, 2001) at the Stewartville Care Center of Leukemia.

A private family service is planned for a later date. The body was cremated.

Robert D. Burzette was born July 5, 1934, in Rudd, Iowa. He grew up in Mason City, and attended school and graduated from Mason City High School.

Robert was united in marriage to Chardette Billman in 1955 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She preceded him in death in 1996.

Following his marriage he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1956 and served two years.

He attended the University of Iowa, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics.

He was employed by B.F. Goodrich in Akron, Ohio, before moving to San Diego, Calif., where he worked for General Dynamics as an aerospace engineer until 1970.

He then worked in the construction trade as a general contractor until moving to Stewartville in 1999.

He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed reading.

He is survived by two sons, Timothy, and his wife, Donna, of San Diego, Calif., and Todd and his wife, Brandi, of San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren; one brother, Donald Burzette, of Stewartville, Minn.; three sisters, Sheila Riden and Sherry Quinby, both of Charles City, and Jan Adams, of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters and three brothers.

LAKE MILLS - Lauretta C. Dorenbush, 83, of Lake Mills, died Monday (Oct. 15, 2001) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

GARNER - Lloyd Bier Sr., 74, of Garner, died Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at his home.

His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Garner, with the Rev. Kay Hooper officiating. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

DOLORES E. ELLESON

CLINTON - Dolores E. Elleson, 71, of 250 13th Ave. N. in Clinton, died Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001) at her home.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Fulton Presbyterian Church in Fulton, Ill.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Pape Funeral Home, 2308 Pershing Blvd. in Clinton, and from 9:30 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery.

Dolores was born Feb. 28, 1930, in Grand Mound, Iowa, to Alfred and Martha (Stanke) Kallenbach. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1947.

She married Gordon Elleson on Feb. 28, 1948, in Clinton. Dolores was a homemaker and had been a nurse's aid, lab technician and an EKG technician at both Jane Lamb and Mercy Hospital in Clinton.

She was a member of the Fulton Presbyterian Church, Fulton Country Club and the Fulton Ladies Golf Association.

Dolores is survived by her husband, Gordon; two daughters, Mrs. Cheryl (Steven) Schurtz, of Mason City, and Mrs. Denise (Gene) Waters, of Jackson, Ala.; three sons, Dr. Dale (Susan) Elleson, of Freemont, Calif., Dennis (Bobbie) Elleson, of Portland, Ore., and David (Judy) Elleson, of Coralville; 14 grandchildren, Chad and Ryan Elleson, Stuart and Elleson Schurtz, JJ Streit, Brandy, Casey, Jessie and Luke Waters, Sonia, Eric, and Kirk Elleson, and Michael and Thomas Elleson; and one great-grandson, James Streit; three sisters, Velda Kroeger, of Santa Barbara, Calif., Dorthy Lichtenstein, of Grand Mound, Arline O'Connor, of Osage Beach, Mo., and a brother, Gerald Kallenbach, of Port Clinton, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

HELEN BROWN BELL GUENTHER

WASHINGTON, Iowa - Helen Brown Bell Guenther, 94, of 1024 South Ave. B, died Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at the Halcyon House.

Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Washington, with the Rev. Robert Bell and the Rev. Donald Hodson officiating. Interment will be in Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Britt with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating.

Visitation was held on Monday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home, 116 E. Main in Washington.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Britt and Washington United Methodist Churches in her memory.

Helen was born on Nov. 30, 1906, the daughter of George Washington Brown and Minnie Michaels Brown in Washington.

Helen attended Gray Country School and graduated from Washington High School. She received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1928. She taught English in Gibson, Iowa, and was appointed as school principal. She later taught at Norway, Iowa.

She was united in marriage with the Rev. R. Maynard Bell on Sept. 1, 1932. Together they served churches in Elma, Riceville, Gladbrook, Springville, Rudd and Britt, Iowa.

Following Maynard's unexpected death, Helen began working as high school librarian in the North Scott school district. She attended graduate school at the University of Iowa and received her master's degree in library science. She moved to Charles City and worked as high school librarian.

On Sept. 14, 1968, she was married to Gilbert H. Guenther, of Britt. Together they were able to travel to every state in the U.S. They both took great interest in the youth of the Britt community and were given special recognition for their community interest.

Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Britt, the United Methodist Women and a 75-year member of Eastern Star.

Helen is survived by a son, the Rev. Robert Bell and his wife, Margaret, who is also her stepdaughter, of Washington; stepdaughter, Jeanette Gault and her husband, Jerry, of Spicer, Minn.; stepson, George Guenther and his wife, Janice, of Corwith; and stepson, Eugene Guenther and his wife, Julie, of Britt; a brother-in-law, Dr. David Shaw, of Cresco; 23 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband; her second husband; daughter, Joan Shaw; and stepdaughter, Virginia Theulen; brother, Walter Brown, and sisters, Bertha Stout and Mary Hildebrand.

CINDY L. DODD

GARNER - Cindy L. Dodd, 43, of Garner, died Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Father Craig Steimel officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner with a Rosary Society rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Cynthia Louise Dodd, the daughter of Verne and Delores (Peterson) Hejlik, was born April 29, 1958, at Britt. She graduated from Garner-Hayfield High School in 1976 and continued her education at NIACC in Mason City. While in college, she worked at Target in Mason City.

On Sept. 13, 1980, she was married to Rodney Dodd at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. They made their home in Garner where they raised their two boys, Travis, age 10, and Corey age 7. Cindy was employed by IMT in Garner where she had worked in various positions.

She enjoyed her family, snowmobiling and camping, and was an avid sports fan.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rosary Society, Miller Homemakers, Top of Iowa APICS and the Hancock County Snowmobile Association.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Rodney, of Garner; two sons, Travis and Corey; her parents, Verne and Delores Hejlik, of Garner; two sisters, Deb Rygh and her husband, Jim, of Lake Mills, and their two sons, Michael and David, and Susie Kozisek and her husband, Butch, of Garner, and their four children, Brad, Ashley, Chelsey and Richie; two brothers, Tim Hejlik and his wife, Sharon, of Garner, and their three sons, Lincoln, Lance and Lucas, and Tony Hejlik and his wife, Mel, of Woodland Park, Colo., and their two daughters, Justine and Jessica; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Verneil and Jerry Quintus, of Garner; three brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Bob Dodd and his wife, Linda, of Klemme, and their two daughters, Heather and Shannon, and their stepson, Richard Billings, of Goodell; Scott Dodd and his special friend, Diane, of Garner, and his three sons, Jon, Joe and Tom; Biz Powers and her husband, Jeff, of Garner and their three children, Matt, Mandy and Zachary, and Steve Dodd and his wife, Judy, of St. Louis, Mo., and their two children, Alex and Carla; and many other relatives and friends.

CLARION - Victor Calles, 19, of Clarion, died Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at the Community Memorial Hospital in Clarion, as the result of injuries sustained in an auto accident.

LLOYD BIER SR.

GARNER - Lloyd Bier Sr., 74, of Garner died Sunday (Oct. 14, 2001) at his home.

His funeral will be held 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. Kay Hooper officiating. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner and one hour prior to services at the church.

Lloyd Lester Bier, the son of Henry and Priscilla (Pals) Bier, was born July 19, 1927 near Belmond. He attended Belmond Community Schools and then worked for farmers in the Belmond area.

On Dec. 14, 1946 he married Etta Lou Webner at the Evangelical and Reformed Church parsonage in Klemme. They worked on farms in Kanawha and Garner. In 1957, they moved to a farm near Klemme and began farming on their own.

In 1966, they moved to a farm near Garner where Lloyd continued to farm until retiring in 1985. For the next seven years he worked in the maintenance department at Prairie View Apartments in Garner.

Lloyd enjoyed horseshoe pitching, making miniature horse harnesses, woodworking, going to auctions and watching his grandchildren's activities.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner and the North Iowa Horseshoe Pitchers Association.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Etta Lou, of Garner; daughter, Roberta Carolus and her husband, Keith, of Klemme and their four children, Barbara Ralston and her husband, Gary, of Ark. and their two sons, Brian and Chris Ralston, Dawn Booker and her husband, Donald, of Tenn. and son, Clark Campos, Bradley Carolus and his wife, Jesse, of Klemme and their daughter, Bretta, and Daniel Carolus of Meservey and his special friend, Karla Quam; daughter, Diana Deibler and her husband, Bill, of Hayfield and their two children, Jennifer Osterkamp and her husband, Ryan, of Hayfield, and Billy Deibler of Hayfield; son, Lloyd Bier Jr. and his wife, Jan, of Garner and their children, Wesley and Brianne; sister, Ethel Young, of Belmond; brother, Paul Bier, of Belmond; sisters-in-law, Ardis Bier, of Clear Lake, Clara Bier of Goodell, Doris Palmer and her husband, Willard, of Holland, Iowa, and Amy Webner, of Mason City; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Schlawin, of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Mary B. Shreckengost, 83, of 1531 Sixth Place S.E., Mason City, died Sunday afternoon (Oct. 14, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Bill Poland, senior pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Bohemian Cemetery in Plymouth.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. and again one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Mary was born on April 5, 1918, one of eight children to Strother and Sarah (Hill) Wise at Titonka, Iowa. She attended school at Mason City High School and Plymouth High School. She was a lifelong resident of Mason City.

She was united in marriage to Fred Charles Jones on Sept. 21, 1935 in Mason City. He preceded her in death on Jan. 20, 1972. She later married Cecil Shreckengost on March 1, 1972. Cecil also preceded her in death on March 4, 1996.

Mary was employed in the Central Supply department at Park Hospital for 13 years, retiring in 1971.

Mary was a long time member of Wesley United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Women of the Moose.

Her time was lovingly used in sharing with her family and traveling with them. She also was a fabulous cook and baker.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Lorraine Arhart, of Shreveport, La.; three sons, Roland and his wife, LaVonne Jones, Walter R. and his wife, Cathy Jones, and L. Steven Jones, all of Mason City; three sisters, Iva Flynn, of Mason City, Bonnie and her husband, Ralph Lease, of Iowa Falls, Sarah and her husband, Tad Price, of Fort Meyers, Fla.; and one brother, Strother E. Wise, of Las Vegas, Nev.; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred, her second husband, Cecil; one daughter, Barbara Jones; one granddaughter, Robin Clem; one great-grandson, Camran T. Jones; two sisters, Helen Ayers, and Lucille Estal; and one brother, J.B. Wise; and one son-in-law, Charles Arhart.

KNOXVILLE - Danny Joe Jones, 47, of 1101 Woodland, Knoxville, formerly of Rockwell, died Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001) in Des Moines.

His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Swaledale United Methodist Church in Swaledale, with the Rev. Bruce Wittern officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Swaledale with flag folding and taps.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 S. Third St. in Rockwell.

Danny was born Jan. 3, 1954, in Mason City, the son of Robert Lewis and Lorraine Marie (Luick) Jones.

On Feb. 1, 1972 Danny went on to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps. During his service he attained the rank of LCpl. He received the following medals and commendations, Rifle Expert Badge and the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Electronics SurvillanceCrs-Ca-72. On Jan. 31, 1974 he was honorably discharged.

Danny came back to the Mason City area were he attended North Iowa Community College. For the past 10 years he has lived in Knoxville, where he was very involved in the VA Center.

Danny loved working with his hands. He enjoyed wood and leather working. Danny was very talented both as a musician and writer. He was able to play several different musical instruments and able to compose his own music to play. He had been honored with the Awards of Excellence in music and self-expression. He had a way with words and expressing his thoughts on paper which lead him to write stories and even had some of them published. He loved being a shade tree mechanic on his own car.

Danny is survived by his father, Robert Jones and special friend, Mary Holm, of Mason City; paternal grandparents, Lee and Alfina Jones, of Mason City; three sisters, Barbara Noonan and her husband, Tom of Denver, Colo. and their children, Brian and Kevin, Peggy Lettow and her husband, Kurt, of West Des Moines, and their children Jordan, Lindsay and Jared, and Jeannette Bram and her husband, Brad, of Mason City, and their children Lacey, Kady and Rosalie; three brothers, Thomas Jones and his wife, Sue, of Mason City, and their children, Audra, Mike, Robert and Thomas, Terry Jones, of Mason City, John Jones and his wife, Lorraine, of Rockwell, and their children, Ben, Jessica and Rachael, many aunts, uncles and cousins.

MASON CITY - Ronald "Bob" McEldoon, 73, of 707 Sixth Place S.E. died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Ronald R. McEldoon, son of George and Etta (Cobb) McEldoon was born May 7, 1928, in Mason City. He graduated from Mason City High School.

He was united in marriage on Jan. 24, 1953, to Vivian Hull at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. They lived in Mason City where he worked at PPG until starting River City Glass Inc. with a partner. He retired in 1983.

He looked forward to seeing his friends at his coffee group at Pro's. He also enjoyed watching football, new cars, working with wood, but most of all his grandchildren.

His survivors include his wife, Vivian McEldoon of Mason City; his children, Kirby McEldoon of Mason City, Kay Barkema and her husband, Russ, of Belmond; many nieces and nephews; and three grandchildren, Justin Barkema, Whitney Barkema and Mariah McEldoon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Betty Boggs and Iola Price; and one brother, Don McEldoon.

MASON CITY - Mary B. Shreckengost, 83, of 1531 Sixth Place S.E., Mason City, died Sunday afternoon (Oct. 14, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Mary was born on April 5, 1918, one of eight children to Strother and Sarah (Hill) Wise at Titonka, Iowa. She attended school at Mason City High School and Plymouth High School. She was a lifelong resident of Mason City.

She was united in marriage to Fred Charles Jones on Sept. 21, 1935, in Mason City. He preceded her in death on Jan. 20, 1972. She later married Cecil Shreckengost on March 1, 1973. Cecil also preceded her in death, on March 4, 1996.

Mary was employed in the Central Supply department at Park Hospital for 13 years, retiring in 1971.

Mary was a long time member of Wesley United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Women of the Moose.

Her time was lovingly used in sharing with her family and traveling with them. She also was a fabulous cook and baker.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Lorraine Arhart of Shreveport, La.; three sons, Roland and his wife, LaVonne Jones, Walter R. and his wife, Cathy Jones, and L. Steven Jones, all of Mason City; three sisters, Iva Flynn of Mason City, Bonnie and her husband, Ralph Lease, of Iowa Falls, Sarah and her husband, Tad Price, of Fort Meyers, Fla.; and one brother, Strother E. Lauretta C. Dorenbush was born Feb 18, 1918, to Louis and Christine (Dieckmann) Doege in Hancock County on a farm northwest of Woden.

She was baptized and confirmed in St Johns Lutheran Church in Woden. She went to Country School Bingham #1, graduating from the 8th grade in 1931 and from Buffalo Center High School in 1935. Lauretta was a member of the First Reformed Church all her married life, directing the choir and singing in it.

She was married to Wade H. Dorenbush on Jan. 18, 1939, at the Reformed Church Parsonage in Buffalo Center by the Rev. Everts. They lived northwest of Buffalo Center for seven years and then near Woden.

They purchased a farm near Conger, Minn., and moved there March 1, 1950, and lived there until 1979 when they moved to their home in Lake Mills.

On Dec. 15, 1998, Lauretta moved to the Lake Mills Care Center. She passed away at the Lake Mills Care Center on Monday (Oct. 15, 2001).

Lauretta is survived by her sister, Bertha Simmons, of San Lorenzo, Calif.; and 10 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wade; three brothers, Carl, Fred, and Herb; and one sister, Peggy Weaver.

Lewaine R. Evans was born June 12, 1924, in Winnebago County, Iowa, the son of John E. and Emelia G. (Nestvedt) Evans. His family later moved to Worth County. He graduated from Kensett High School. He later moved to Plymouth where he farmed.

He was united in marriage to Marjorie Deardeuff. The ceremony took place August 28, 1949, at the First United Methodist Church in Mason City. They later moved to Mason City where they made their home.

He worked for 26 years as a laborer at Continental Grain before retiring in 1986.

He was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Wesley United Methodist Church Men's Club, and a former member of an antique car club.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He will be remembered as a warm and caring friend to all who met him.

His hobbies included fishing, reading, traveling and "old time dancing".

Lewaine and his wife found great enjoyment in volunteering with many organizations. They could often be found at the Food Bank, Lime Creek Nature Center and just recently at the Senior Wellness Fair.

BESSIE ANNA KADUCE

BELMOND - Bessie Anna Kaduce, 94, a lifelong resident of the Belmond-Meservey area, died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Bessie Meints was born Sept. 14, 1907, on her parent's farm in Avery Township, Hancock County, near Meservey, the daughter of Abner and Grace (Kielman) Meints. She attended rural school.

Bessie married Johannes "Joe" Kaduce on Sept. 13, 1930, at the Reformed Church Parsonage in Klemme. Following their marriage the couple farmed with Joe's brother on a farm that the brothers had purchased together.

In addition to farming with her husband, Bessie was a lifelong homemaker. She had worked in housekeeping at the Belmond Hospital from the mid 1950s to the mid 1970s when she retired.

Bessie and Joe moved to Belmond following Joe's retirement from farming in 1964. They lived for a number of years in their own home before becoming residents of the Leinbach Center Retirement complex in Belmond, where she had been a resident for the last 15 years. Her husband preceded her in death on June 20, 1998.

Most of Bessie's life centered on her husband, siblings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and friends. Bessie loved hosting family dinners, holidays and various other family gatherings. She always kept track of birthdays and other special occasions in her family's lives.

A favorite activity she enjoyed was visiting over tea, cookies and cake with her friends and family. She loved canning, baking and dining out.

She and her husband had enjoyed traveling and had been to many places including Hawaii and Florida. They also enjoyed going dancing at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake.

Bessie had received her "Honorary" High School Diploma from Meservey High School at age 90. She was known by everyone as "Grandma" and her grandchildren considered her their best friend.

Bessie was a lifelong member of the Reformed Church, attending both in Meservey and at Immanuel Reformed Church in Belmond.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life are her two daughters, Marlene and Leonard Gobeli, and Cynthia Sanders, all of Mason City; her grandchildren, James, Douglas, Dale, Jeffrey and Laura Gobeli. HAMPTON - Bernard C. Erickson, 81, of Hampton, died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at the Hampton Care Center in Hampton.

Bernard was born on Dec. 1, 1919, in Kanawha, a son of Alvin and Pearl (Thompson) Erickson. He was raised in Kanawha, graduating from the Kanawha High School.

He served his country in the United States Army during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Zada Wirtjes on June 17, 1967, in Hampton. He was a farmer all of his life. He enjoyed the outdoors and farming.

He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was a member of the American legion and the Farm Bureau.

He had a favorite pony as a boy and loved to ride it. The pony's name was "Prince." When he rode it his mother would tell him that he was the best little jockey in the world.

He loved sports, especially baseball and football. He loved to go to all of his children's baseball games and sit behind home plate to make sure the umpire was calling the balls and strikes correctly. When they did not he let them know about it, and this continued on with his grandchildren. He loved to play catch with his children and taught them how to play the game. He was a great fan of the Hawkeyes.

CARLA ANN (BERGDALE) VANDYKE

MASON CITY - Carla Ann (Bergdale) VanDyke, 45, died in Denver, Colo., on Oct. 10, 2001, after a long courageous battle with lung disease.

Her memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Temple Baptist Church, 1211 S. Kentucky Ave., Mason City, with Pastor Ed Bard officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Moose Lodge, 22 Fourth St. N.W., Mason City.

She requested her body be donated to science in the fight against this rare lung disease.

Carla was born on May 11, 1956, in Mason City. She attended school in Mason City. She moved to Colorado in 1973.

Karla was united in marriage to Danial VanDyke on Jan. 15, 1977, in Colorado Springs, Colo.

She had worked at Goodwill Industries, various apartment complexes cleaning, 17 years at Pat's Cafe in Las Animas, Colo., Federal Upholstery in Mason City and the Country Kitchen.

She loved doing arts and crafts, but most of all she was very devoted to her family.

She was a dedicated and inspiring member of Parkview Baptist Church in Las Animas, Colo.

LEWIS FREDERIC 'LEW' LITZEL

CLEAR LAKE - Lewis Frederic (Lew) Litzel, 51, of 9727 Wheelerwood Drive in Clear Lake, died Thursday (Oct. 18, 2001) at his home.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Following the service he will be cremated.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and then one hour before the service on Saturday.

Lew was born Dec. 19, 1949, in Mason City, the son of Philip and Geneva (Maassen) Litzel. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1968. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. and served in the Vietnam War as a field wireman and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Rifle Marksman Badge.

Lew moved back to Clear Lake and worked for Mason City Overhead Door for 13 years as a service tech.

Lew enjoyed walking, reading, gardening with his granddaughter, Ashley, and spending time with his grandchildren, his dog, Rusty, and making yearly trips with his wife, Bette, to Wisconsin.

Lew is survived by his wife, Bette Litzel, of Clear Lake; three children, Lewis Levi Litzel, of Clear Lake, and his special friend, Annie Morse, of Fertile, Tracy English and her husband, Kirk, New Richland, Minn. and their children, Kristina, Stephanie, Heather, Allison and Elizabeth, and Bobbie James and her husband, Jason, of Clear Lake, and their children, Ashley and Brianna; his sister, Phyllis Brown and her husband, Dennis, of Hiawatha; two brothers, Phil Litzel and his wife, Lynn, of Plano, Texas and Ian Loynachan, of Casper, Wyo.; mother-in-law, Edna Hammitt, of Garner, and several nieces and nephews.

Helen Margurite Lease was born May 21, 1920, in Silver Township, Cherokee County, the daughter of Anton and Helga (Steele) Hanson. Helen was baptized on July 21, 1920, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee and confirmed on June 12, 1955, at Grace Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. She graduated from Wilson High School in Cherokee in 1938. Following graduation, she worked for Jantzen's Department Store in Storm Lake.

Helen was united in marriage to Al Lease on June 23, 1940, at the Presbyterian Parsonage in Cherokee. The couple lived in Cherokee until Al left for the service. Following his return they moved to Storm Lake in 1946.

She was a long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church and dedicated her life to helping others. She will be remembered as faithfully serving her family as wife, mother and homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Al, of Northwood; a son, Craig Lease and his wife, Phyllis, of Northwood; a daughter, Karen Braesch and her husband, Tom, of Prior Lake, Minn.; five grandsons, Travis (Anne Marie) Lease, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Brian (Becky) Lease, La Crosse, Wis., Matthew (Melissa) Braesch, of Sheboygan, Wis., Jason (Tracy) Braesch, of Prior Lake, Minn. and Jeff (Joan) Braesch, of Burnsville, Minn. Also surviving are three great-granddaughters, Arianna Kersten and Alexis and Haley Braesch; a sister, Lillian Johnson, of Storm Lake; a brother, Gunner William Hanson, of Morris, Minn.; and other extended family members and friends.

CHARLES CITY - Glenn M. Slinger, 94, formerly of 100 Charles St., died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at the 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

His funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. Interment will be held in Sunnyside Cemetery in Charles City.

Glenn was born on June 15, 1907, the son of Fred A. and Marie (Schneider) Slinger, in Riverton Township, Floyd County. He attended and graduated from the Charles City School district in 1925.

Glenn enjoyed kicking up his heels at barn dances. It was there that he met the lovely Grace Howe, and on Feb. 23, 1930, they were united in marriage in St. John Lutheran Church in Charles City.

Glenn was the first merchant to sell Grade A Milk using Holstein cattle and the last merchant to sell Grade A Milk when he retired in the early 1970s. Glenn loved oranges, bananas and corn flakes but his favorite treat was a teaspoon of plain sugar right out of the sugar bowl.

He was a man with an open heart who would ponder a problem until he found a solution, no matter who asked for the advice.

The joy of his life was his family and friends. Everyday he would pick up his grandchildren from school and drive them the two blocks to his house on Charles Street. It could have been snowing, raining, a warm sunny day or one with a cool autumn breeze and he would still be waiting for the sound of that three o'clock bell.

Glenn was involved in helping his community. He was involved with the Farm Bureau, the Floyd County Fair Association, charter member of the Floyd County Pork Association, Heritage Club of CNB and the Grade A Milk Association.

Glenn was blessed with 94 years, leaving many memories to be cherished and shared by family and friends for generations.

He is survived by one daughter, Marlene Ann and her husband, Don Holthaus, of Charles City; one daughter-in-law, Beverly Slinger, of Colwell; one sister, Berniece Hobert, of Minneapolis, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Rhonda and her husband, Jon Sult, of Marble Rock, Kevin Slinger and his wife, Pam, of Waverly, Rick Slinger and his wife, Tina, of Charles City, Paul Slinger, of Johnston, Dr. Anthony Slinger and his wife, Carol, of Charles City, Joel Holthaus, of Waverly, and JoAnn Holthaus and fiancé, Edgar Hervert, of Charles City; two special friends, Butch and Lou Meyer, of Charles City; and 13 great-grandchildren.

LEONARD 'SLIM' YOUNG

KLEMME - Leonard "Slim" Young, 70, of Klemme, died Wednesday (Oct. 17, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner, with The Rev. Craig Steimel officiating. Interment will be in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m. followed by a scriptural wake service. Visitation will continue one hour before services on Saturday at the church.

Leonard Verner Young, the son of Verner and Gertrude (Klesel) Young, was born May 30, 1931, on a farm near Garner. He attended rural school at Garfield No. 7 and graduated from Garner High School in 1949.

He farmed with his father until 1952, when he served his country during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Roswell, N.M.

On June 3, 1953, he married Donna Lou Lehmann at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. They lived in Roswell until his discharge in 1956. They returned to Garner, where they farmed west of town. In 1988, they moved to Klemme. Slim drove school bus for the Garner-Hayfield Community Schools. He was a milk hauler for the Farmers Co-op Creamery Association in Garner and drove truck for Kor-Bert Meats in Klemme. He also worked for Pioneer Seeds for 20 years, managing detasseling crews.

In June 2000, he and Donna completed their three-year lay ministry course and actively ministered to those in need.

Slim enjoyed his family, watching boxing on TV, fishing and beekeeping.

He was a lifetime member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was a 4th Degree Knight.

Slim is survived by his wife, Donna, of Klemme; three daughters, Patricia Wright and her husband, Dennis, of Grimes and their three children, Andrew, Thomas and Rachel, Linda Young-Streit and her husband, Robert, of Boone and her two sons, Daniel and Adam, and Suzan Brunes and her husband, Kevin, of Klemme and their two children, Kristine and Jesse; a brother, Bill Young and his wife, Nancy, of Garner; a sister, Betty Lien and her husband, William, of Kimberling City, Mo.; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

CLEAR LAKE - Gary A. Hoffman Sr., 62, of 1409 S. Cedar, Owatonna, Minn., formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Oct. 18, 2001) at the Owatonna Hospital in Owatonna, Minn.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis of Clear Lake United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Gary was born May 25, 1939 in Mason City, the son of George F. and Nina (Zimmel) Hoffman. He attended school in Clear Lake.

He married Karolyn Newell on March 13, 1962, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and was married for 21 years.

Gary worked at the Clear Lake Truck Stop, drove semi for Ruan Transport, Bonner Trucking, Gene Meyer Trucking and Gerald Foutch Trucking for a total of 25 years. He then worked at the Clear Lake Bakery and then Slidell Inc. in Owatonna, Minn. until retiring due to ill health.

Gary enjoyed his electric trains and collecting coins.

BESSIE ANNA KADUCE

BELMOND - Bessie Anna Kaduce, 94, a lifelong resident of the Belmond-Meservey area, died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Bessie Meints was born Sept. 14, 1907, on her parent's farm in Avery Township, Hancock County, near Meservey, the daughter of Abner and Grace (Kielman) Meints. She attended rural school.

Bessie married Johannes "Joe" Kaduce on Sept. 13, 1930, at the Reformed Church parsonage in Klemme. Following their marriage, the couple farmed with Joe's brother on a farm that the brothers had purchased together.

In addition to farming with her husband, Bessie was a lifelong homemaker. She had worked in housekeeping at the Belmond hospital from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s when she retired.

Bessie and Joe moved to Belmond following Joe's retirement from farming in 1964. They lived for a number of years in their own home before becoming residents of the Leinbach Center Retirement complex in Belmond, where she had lived for the last 15 years. Her husband preceded her in death on June 20, 1998.

Most of Bessie's life centered on her husband, siblings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and friends. Bessie loved hosting family dinners, holidays and various other family gatherings. She always kept track of birthdays and other special occasions in her family's lives.

A favorite activity was visiting over tea, cookies and cake with her friends and family. She loved canning, baking and dining out.

She and her husband had enjoyed traveling and had been to many places, including Hawaii and Florida. They also enjoyed going dancing at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake.

Bessie received her "honorary" high school diploma from Meservey High School at age 90. She was known by everyone as "Grandma," and her grandchildren considered her their best friend.

Bessie was a lifelong member of the Reformed Church, attending both in Meservey and at Immanuel Reformed Church in Belmond.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life are her two daughters, Marlene and Leonard Gobeli and Cynthia Sanders, all of Mason City; her grandchildren, James and Jody Gobeli, Douglas Gobeli, Dale and Kim Gobeli , Jeffrey Gobeli, and Laura and Alfredo Viteri, Teresa and Chip VanHorn, Gregory Hall, Monica and Carlos Gomez, Melissa and Kirk Hill, Lisa and Dave Lane, Matt and Kristie Rink and Tony and Ann Carlson; great-grandchildren, Lance, Jennifer, Timothy, Jesse and Jake Gobeli, Ashley, Zachery and Mallory Lane, Elizabeth and Ericka Anderson, Anna and Jenna VanHorn, Amelia Viteri, Joshua, Allysa and Alexandra Hill, Courtney and Haley Rink, Grant Carlson and Joey Hall; and four great-great-grandchildren, Irie, Tatin, Hunter and Vincent. She also is survived by many, many, nieces and nephews.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, Abner and Grace; her husband, Joe; her daughter, Mavis Weaver; an infant brother, Herman; three great-grandchildren, Micheal Dale Gobeli, Bess Amanda VanHorn and Charles Anthony Carlson; brothers, Alfred, Abbie and Herman Sr.; sisters, Minnie, Amanda, Elizabeth, Gertie, Irma and Grace; and a son-in-law, Bud Weaver.

Don was born on July 18, 1920 at Titonka, one of two children of John G. and Anna (Kuchenreuther) Rippentrop. As a young family, they moved to the Thompson area.

He graduated from the Thompson High School in 1937 and then joined his father in the farming operation. There he met the woman of his dreams, Josephine (Joe) Wessels, living right down the road. They were united in marriage on his 21st birthday on July 18, 1941, at Elmore, Minn. To this union were born five children. They continued farming until moving to Mason City in 1959. He was employed at Northwestern Portland Cement Company.

Later he was pulled by his love of automobiles into the auto service manager field in Mason City. Later they moved to Dundas, Minn., where he worked for Chrysler Village as the service manager in nearby Northfield. He retired in 1982 and returned to Mason City.

Don was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He along with his wife of 60 years enjoyed their grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman, trying to catch anything that swam. He was a good hunter, providing geese, ducks, pheasants, rabbits and squirrels for his family. He also enjoyed camping.

Those who are thankful for sharing Don's life include his wife, Josephine, of Mason City; two daughters, Jean and her husband, Ronald LaCoste, of Rockford, and JoAnn and her husband, Larry Mozack, of Mason City; three sons, Ronald and his wife, Linda Rippentrop, Robert and his wife, Bev Rippentrop, all of Mason City, and Rodney and his wife, Kathy Rippentrop, of Apple Valley, Minn.; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Jan Oliver of Mason City; one aunt, Veda Kuchenreuther of Algona; numerous nieces and nephews, including his blood niece, Linda, and her husband, Ron Lee, of Titonka, and several cousins.

Anna was born on Feb. 25, 1904, in Lake Wilson, Minn., the daughter of Seivert and Bertha Johnson, who immigrated from Dovre, Norway.

She was married to Harry A. Walter on Sept. 21, 1921, in Slayton, Minn. They moved to Mason City immediately after their marriage.

She was a lifelong homemaker who was active in Wesley United Methodist Church, the church women's club and the Railroad Engineers Auxiliary.

Anna enjoyed collecting antiques, crocheting, gardening and playing cards.

She is survived by two sons, Robert Walter and his wife, Annette, of West Des Moines, and Richard Walter and his wife, Mary, of Ankeny; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Phyllis Kasper of Pipestone, Minn., and Marce Kasper of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Lanny L. Cunningham was born in Forest City on March 9, 1952, the son of Lloyd and Helen (Lundstrum) Cunningham. He received his education in Forest City schools and graduated from Forest City High School.

Lanny joined the U.S. Army after his graduation. He served in Germany as a tank commander for three years. There he met his wife, Linda Schuetz, and they were married in Germany on July 20, 1974.

Following his discharge from the service, the couple made their home in Forest City. Lanny began working at Winnebago Industries in 1974. He was shop foreman in the Warranty Department at the time of his death. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.

Lanny was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish, go camping with family and friends and enjoyed shooting black-powder rifles.

He was a gifted mechanic who enjoyed working in his shop at home, helping friends keep their cars and tractors running. He loved his antique John Deere tractors and treasured time spent with friends and loved being Papa to his grandson, Dylan.

Lanny is survived by his wife, Linda Cunningham, of Forest City; two daughters, Angie Cunningham and Gina Schleuger and husband, Curt, all of Forest City; a brother and his wife, Tom and Debbie Cunningham, of Forest City; two sisters, Dawn Cunningham of Keokuk and Joan Weaver, of Palm Bay, Fla.; a grandson, Dylan Schleuger; and two sisters-in-law, Marie (Duckie) Menke of Camden Point, Mo., and Terri Huso, of Forest City.

NORTHWOOD - Eleanor Rohne Tue, 93, of Northwood, died on Friday (Oct. 19, 2001) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Eleanor was born on March 13, 1908, at her parents' farm in Freeborn County, Minn., near Deer Creek. After graduating from Winona State Teachers College, she taught school for 12 years before raising her family.

She was an active member of First Lutheran Church where she was primary Sunday school department leader for 40 years.

Her daughters will cherish her love for them, for gardening, her church and other children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard B. Tue; her parents, Mathais and Annette Rohne; sisters, Lulu Halver, Alice Cronwell and Olova Rislov; and brothers, Irving Rohne and Martin Rohne.

He lived and worked in Kanawha, farming and working as an auto mechanic at a G.M. dealership.

He married Cheryl Steenhard in 1974 and they lived in Belmond, where he still farmed and worked as a mechanic.

He had been coming to the Aitkin area most of his life and moved to Aitkin in 1987 where he owned and operated Wayne's Auto Service.

He was a member of Aitkin Moose Lodge 1060 and the Aitkin American Legion.

He enjoyed fishing and racing stock cars.

He is survived by his significant other, Jeanne Monse of Aitkin, Minn.; one son, Rick Robertson, of St. Martin, Minn.; five daughters, Mona Green of Garland, Texas, Michelle Oustad of Blue Springs, Mo., Rachelle Robertson of South Haven, Mich., Nikki Brinkman of Webster City and Wendy Stimac, of Crosby, Minn.; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Cheryl, in 1989.
